This is a restaurant that you want to love, but just don't. I had tried for à few years now to like anything about the restaurant. Love the setting. Love the Garden Center. Live in the neighborhood and would have this as a "hangout" breakfast, lunch and dinner, if I were impressed. Not impressed with the food, at all. Not impressed with the service, at all. I think that a restaurant with a smallish menu should EXCEL in all items and their "special" should be, well, special. The wait staff should know the menu and have at least tasted every thing they serve. If a party orders wine, an appetizer, my suggestion to the wait staff - back off! We are not anywhere the tables are going to be turned, so let us, the diners, enjoy without the constant need to find out if we have found something on the menu to order! You are not that busy! Your kitchen is not that busy! With the right menu, chef and wait staff, this restaurant could be the one with lines around the corner! But, alas, it is mediocre at best. It is a lovely setting for those who wish to eat in a nice setting and care little about taste.

My fourth visit to 36th Street Grill made me realize a theme: flies. I have dined twice for breakfast and twice for dinner. All four times (Spring, Summer, and Fall) there were a lot of flies that would land on the table, me, my date, my food, and were just an annoyance. It would not be that hard to put up fly paper and then take it down before the place opens in the morning. As for the food, it was good but not great. The location is good and the setting is nice. The prices are reasonable to high, but not expensive. The beer on tap is local. I have had mediocre service and good service. I really hope this place survives as it is a nice north / northwest Boise option for dining. If they would just serve past 8PM and get rid of the flies, 36th Street would be on the path to improvement.

Great lunches and coffee service. Meals are good, great place for a gals lunch or with parents - great food. Sometimes services is a little slow, but this is the type of place that you go for a longer lunch or meal. Fun wine list as well. Love the outdoor seating area and in the winter months, the windows make it a fun place to be inside. Reasoable prices and good portions - not so much, but just enough. Love the salads and sandwiches.

I've been here twice now trying both the eggs benny and the meatloaf sandwich. Benny was good, meatloaf sandwich was excellent. Atmosphere is nice, with tons of daylight. If you go with a girl, you may get sucked into perusing plants and knick knacks for an hour.

Breakfast lunch and dinner have never failed to delight! The place is beautifully lit, the staff quick and efficient and the food some of the best in Boise! Prices are great for the wonderfully prepared and great quality of food.

This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. My husband and I were so excited to finally get to have lunch here, and were thoroughly disappointed! Terrible food, slow service, dirty dishes, and too expensive for the "atmosphere". Don't waste your time or money.

Yummy food, great service. I'm a fan for sure.

Excellent service. Great variety of food! A must for any meal. Some highlights on the menu include quinoa salad with citrus dressing, burgers, daily soups and a large variety of wine. All good. Great home and garden store adjacent to the restaurant. Unique space with a charming outdoor eating area!

This is a nice place with an interesting atmosphere (being joined to a garden center). Some might think it is an odd combination, but I think it makes for a unique and interesting dining experience. We did have a little trouble locating an open door (arriving there for dinner after the garden center entrance was closed) but worse case you may find yourself wandering around the outside of the building for a minute or two until you find it. You can pretend you are admiring the shrubbery in case anyone notices. We had a company dinner here with approximately 20 people the other night. I think 20 people in one party was a lot for the kitchen to handle. It's not the same as serving 10 couples... All the food has to come out at once and the staff more or less managed to pull it off. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I did very much appreciate the effort, though, as they were very friendly and I could tell they cared and were doing the best they could for a large party. "A" for effort, "A+" for being friendly. There were two appetizers that I tried. Since I didn't do the ordering, I will guess at what the ingredients were. One was a basil, goat cheese and crandberry spread with apples, and bread. This was very nice. The crandberries might easily overpower the flavor but you can exercise "crandberry control" and get the blend just right. It looked great, too. I am not a huge fan of goat cheese but this was so mild that I was only able to discern very little "Essence of Goat". It was yummy. The second appetizer was cucumber rounds or "cups" filled with some colorful additions of fruit or vegetables (I can't remember exactly). It looked great. I couldnt decide how to eat it so I popped the whole round in my mouth at once. This didn't really work for me (cucumber too big and crunchy and overpowered the other ingredients), but I don't want to discourage others from trying it as it might just be me and my country bumpkin upbringing. It did look great, so go ahead and order it to impress your dining companion. I ordered the salmon fillet for my entree. It is served with risotto and a wine reduction sauce. It had a very nice presentation and plating. My salmon was a bit cold (see above, regarding the large party) but the taste was nice. The risotto was very nicely cooked "Creamy with a bite" and was yummy. Another thing I liked about the salmon entree was that it was perfectly sized for a medium sized guy who no longer wants to feel like an over stuffed pillow after eating out. Several in our party ordered the beef fillet, which I was told comes from local highland cattle and is healthier than the normal Angus variety. I surveyed several in our party and 4 out of 5 liked it. Again, the portion looked just right, especially if you are planning for a multi course dinner including dessert. The temperature (I was told) was again too cool but see my note about our large party of 20. I had the creme brûlée for dessert. It came perfectly sized and was perfect, except for the strawberry on top which looked great but must have ripened in a warehouse somewhere instead of on the vine. Oh well, strawberries aren't in season anyway. Anyway, it was a nice dinner despite some problems handling our large party. I'm going to try this place again soon. Nice job, 36th Street Bistro.

Went here for lunch on a Friday. I split the meatloaf sandwich with my friend, it was plenty big for the two of us and we both had a side salad. Great lunch, service was great. We sat outside, it was very comfortable on a 100 degree day and the sound of the fountain was delightful.

The restaurant is almost hidden amongst home and garden shops. But once we got in, the restaurant is very unique and spacious. Natural sunlight bright from large windows all over. The home and garden center right next to it also helps make the restaurant feel like a garden. Service is very good. Decent alcohol menu (beer and stout on tap only $3 too). Appetizer - spinach artichoke dip - awesome. I had the Highland burger, and it was very juicy and good (seems like all beef is local and from the highland vicinity). The wife had southwestern salmon salad. It was tasty and sprinkled generously with cashews and raspberry balsamic vinaigrette. To top it all, we had creme brule desert. After dinner, the kids went out to the patio outdoor dining area where there is a water fountain and area to goof around.

If you haven't stopped in this little tucked-away bistro- you need to! Surrounded by a unique and somewhat quirky garden nursery, the bistro offers fantastic water features and a decent wine selection. The patio looks amazing and my fantastic waiter- Antonio- said the Christmas decor is amazing!

Have never been disappointed here. Fresh food and a solid portion that leaves you satisfied but not stuffed. My favorite is the meatloaf sandwhich with side salad. Very flavorful, juicy and if you're lucky you get an end peice!
(5)Patrick L.
I would rate this place as a 3 but my wife might give it a 5. My wife loved the burger. In fact, says it's one of her favorites in town. I liked the feel of the place but they close early and the service wasn't great.

Great spot on Hill Rd, in a greenhouse style building attached to a garden center that's fun to browse! Short and sweet wine and beer lists, but they tend to mix it up so there's always a worthy choice. The menu rotates with the seasons, with a constant being the use of Highland beef (delicious, grass fed & finished, huger protein, lower fat beef). Great menu options, ranging from burgers to stews to steak to pasta and fabulous salads. Awesome patio in the summer. A definite Boise favorite.

We had a wonderful meal there last night. I love the atmosphere, adjoined to a garden center, with all the lovely plants and openness of the glass allowing all the natural light in. I had the Beef Tenderloin dish, and there was not a morsel of food left on my plate when they took it away. Flavor, portion size, plating technique, all was spot on. Geez, I hate writing this review. Now more people will know of this gem and will make it crazy busy and difficult to get into.

This was FANTASTIC. My half salad was perfect for my taste and appetite, the bf ordered a meatloaf sandwich that he said was amazing. As an added bonus you can walk around the store after you meal! We did a good portion of Christmas shopping without even trying. Definitely is going to get a second visit.

Not sure what the problem is here? We had one really nice experience here, but none since. It's not the food, it's the service. We've come in during the week and on Saturdays for lunch many times, and ever since our first time, they seem to be out of the daily soup special or some other menu item, and there's consistently an extremely long wait for the food. The staff seem stressed & rushed, which really defeats the idea of going out to have a relaxing lunch. I mean no water refill while your waiting for the food to finally arrive. Last time, my husband had to actually go look for someone to ask where our order was? The person he asked was standing at this counter area of the dining room, and offered no explanation or apology. We had family in from out of town, first time visiting the area, so it was embarrassing. The dining room nor the patio was full that day, so Just weird? It's a shame because it's a lovely little place and the food , when it finally arrives is good but the lack of service combined with the price point is hard to reconcile.:(

Here's an update.... The next day I receive an email from the manager, Jodi, telling me how first thing the next morning, the host told her all about what happened and she was sorry and was going to credit my meal back to my credit card and she wanted me to give them another chance to make it right. HA! I just checked my credit card and no credit. That's fine, because I ate the meal. It's just another poor example of customer service. Nice try, 36th Street.

I have been here several times and never had a bad meal. However, today I got a latte with no coffee in it, and the waitress argued with me. Then we were delivered food that was not ours. Next we were brought our food but with the wrong sides (turns out they were out but didn't bother to tell us). The wait was long and the service slow and rude. Will have to carefully consider whether or not to come back.

Good coffee, breakfast sandwiches, service, and atmosphere. I've been here several times for coffee and keep coming back. One of the coziest coffee shops in town, especially when the nursery next door is open.

Went there for a friends birthday tonight. Service was terrible! Ordered their burger, and it literally tasted like they didn't wash their organic vegetables. Aka, my burger tasted like dirt. I live 8 blocks from the place, and will never go back!

Had dinner here last night and was not disappointed. Ordered the salmon salad and it was amazing! Our server Ryan was awesome and we enjoyed our time thoroughly. Highly recommended!

Went for dinner and I will say I was not as impressed as I was the first time. The food was pretty good, not great. I kind of felt like it was too predictable. Not special or unique. It reminds you of a place that does the same dishes over and over again to the point that it is (dare I say it?) cafeteria like. Definitely better tasting but not a wow factor. I'll go again because I like the atmosphere and come Spring the patio is wonderful.

Had lunch at the Bistro on Thursday after golf. I ordered the Hot Ham and Gouda sandwich with Chilled Peach Soup (wasn't so sure about the soup, turned out wonderful). Friends ordered the Blue Cheese burger and the Salmon Tacos. All food was great, as was the service.

Okay. I have not been back yet for the dining experience, but I must admit I went on a Yelp frenzy there for a minute and will go back and try the food and soda! It smells delicious every time I walk into the nursery section. So, sir, I am pretty sure I will eat my words. Please forgive my saltiness. For some reason, I was very incensed at the thought of not having soda with my meal and really wanted it that day. I'm actually laughing at my own first review right now and am happy you and the staff had a sense of humor about it too.

Great coffee! Food seems to be improving. Would be nice if they served breakfast during the week. Biggest problem seems to be staffing as there is no consistency with servers. We keep hoping they'll get it all together one of these days. We like the location and the ambiance.

Excellent coffee. Employees are always friendly. Food is good, simple but prepared with care--worth it. Stop for coffee if nothing else.

The Sunday brunch is amazing and service is excellent! You must go in the summer and eat outdoors in their garden area. Our kids love the flowers and the fountain as well as eating outdoors. The food is so fresh, healthy, and flavorful. Our kids love the Nutella French toast. This place is a hidden gem. If you are looking for a commercial restaurant that serves oversized portions loaded with fat, then this is not the place for you. But if you want really great, fresh food that is made with love, you must go here!

Had the shrimp special. Curried and coconutty. Really small portions. Very expensive for what you get. Leaves plenty of room for dessert. I found out where the 8th Street Wine Company target market is water holing up. Right here at another resto with a street in its name! I think they have brunch which would be good to check out.

I love to have brunch or lunch outside on the patio after browsing through the garden center. I've had several lunches here and they were all very good. Last week I had the salad and soup and the soup was so delicious. The creme brulee for dessert was one of the best I've ever had. I see there are some complaints about the service, but I've always had good service here and the food has always been fresh and delicious. For someone who often eats alone, this is a nice place to sit and relax and not be rushed. This is one of my favorite places to eat outside in the summer.

I just recently moved to Boise and feel pretty lucky to have this restaurant so close to me. I went on a Friday evening and had a really great meal. I had the venison (nightly special) with sweet potato medallions and sautéed spinach. I don't have venison that much but found it absolutely delicious. The service was prompt and friendly and the whole complex has a great feel to it. There was a live guitarist playing during dinner which added to the experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who appreciates a great meal. I though the pricing was spot on for the quality of food that was served. Well done!

Great atmosphere, fresh ingredients, and good service. The burger I had was really tasty, it was just small. I was expecting at least 1/4 pound, but that's alright. They also to my cheese order wrong, but that's only worth 1 star :). Keep it up guys, I'll come by there again.
(4)Candy R.
everything about this place was perfect. beautiful, airy atmosphere; friendly and attentive service, reasonable prices & the food was outstanding. my friend & i both had the burgers since they are known for the highland beef they use & it was one of the best burgers i've ever had. every component was high quality & delicious--from the brioche bun & up. we chose the house salad as our sides, which were fresh & generously portioned too. we'll definitely be back.

My husband and I absolutely love 36th St. Bistro! We are actually pretty picky when it comes to eating out because we are both very into cooking and most restaurants I feel like I could make the food better at home. Not at the bistro! Their dishes are simple, elegant, and delicious. They always have great wine options. The prices are so reasonable and the atmosphere is terrific. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for great food in a relaxed atmosphere that is much more laid back than the downtown feel, which to me is a compliment.
(5)Andy J.
The Bistro Beef Tenderloin entree, though small and inexpensive (just $12), is delicious and worth the visit. If you are hungry, order two! You will not get a better steak dinner anywhere for even the price of both. On a nice day, the patio dining is hard to beat. I have always had friendly, attentive servers there.
(4)Kelly B.
Just like to go there and get coffee since they serve Dawson. The girl there acted like I was there to ruin her day and waste her time. The guy working was like a zombie! Come on people if you can't work somewhere before 11 without being a hoochie mama and a zoned out weirdo maybe you should work at a bar! Nice environment, too bad it get ruined the moment the employees notice you....which can be five minutes!
