I was seated quickly and the server came directly to the table for a drink order and describe the specials. The salad was crisp and fresh the entree a Cajun ribeye was cooked perfectly it was topped with what was almost a whole order or fried onion rings and the asparagus (an up charge) were again cooked perfectly. I would definitely recommend Fire Creek.

On a recent Saturday night, we made the inexplicable mistake of leaving the house and heading toward downtown Des Moines for without first making a dinner reservation. Dumb, I know. After striking out at several restaurants with no availability, I suddenly remembered Fire Creek. I hadn't been here in years, but their online menu looked really promising, and a quick call confirmed they had open tables. We drove right over. After being seated at a comfortable booth in the bar, we settled in and looked around. I love the fireplaces and the warm, neighborhood feel of the restaurant - like a nice alternative to chains for the West Des Moines crowd. It's not overly dressy - jeans and sneakers abounded - but it was perfectly suited for a nice night out. I ordered the Dirty New Yorker, a delicious-sounding gin martini heavy on the olive juice (my favorite). Disappointingly, the martini tasted almost exclusively of vermouth with barely a trace of olive juice to be found. (Isn't "dirty" in the name of the martini? Oh well.) Soon we were served warm bread - VERY welcome as the restaurant itself was quite cold. Things were looking promising. After some deliberation, I decided on the herb-crusted sea bass. It was one of the more expensive entrees, but I had been craving fish all night and this sounded delicious. Charlie ordered prime rib. Both were preceded by salads - perfectly ordinary restaurant salads. Nothing special, just the basics: leaves, croutons, onion, and cucumber. I was pretty surprised when our dinner plates arrived. Charlie's prime rib took up the entire plate, but I had been served a minuscule portion of sea bass - approximately 2 inches wide and 4 inches long - drowned in roughly one stick of frothy butter. Now honestly. Considering my dish was the more expensive of the two, wouldn't you expect SLIGHTLY more from the portion size? I'm not saying I needed a prime rib-sized entree, but really. A little more consistency wouldn't be out of place. Worse, the extreme quantity of butter piled on top of my fish rendered it nearly inedible. There was so much butter on my fish, I had no need for the ramekin accompanying my baked potato - it was already sloshing around in the buttery pool created by the sea bass. Charlie's prime rib was fairly tough - quite difficult to chew and swallow. I expected something much more tender from a restaurant which prides itself on steaks. His loaded baked potato, on the other hand, was delicious. I tried to scrape off as much butter as I could from my fish, but it was no use. I don't have much of a tolerance for rich foods (cream sauces especially), but I don't usually have trouble with butter. I guess anything can make you sick in large enough quantities! Despite consuming approximately six glasses of water before leaving the restaurant, I felt awful the rest of the night and into the next day. I'm really not sure what I could have done other than to tell the waiter "eating an entire stick of butter at one meal is going to make me terribly sick" after we'd been served our entrees, but I never got the chance. No one ever checked in on us... asked us how the food was... or asked us if we'd like another drink. Granted, we were sitting in the bar so I wasn't expecting much, but it would have been nice to see someone occasionally - especially since I was gulping down all the water in sight to try to dilute the inevitable aftereffect of ingesting a half-cup of butter in one go. In the end, would I go back to Fire Creek? Probably not. Even if the two things we ordered were anomalies or if it was an "off" night, there just wasn't anything that special about the rest of the meal - the bread, the salads, the drinks were all just average. Not to mention the service was nonexistent. I do like the atmosphere and I appreciate having a non-chain option in such a chain-heavy area, but I just don't really have a reason to return - that is, provided I can remember to make dinner reservations next time!

This restaurant is conveniently located for me - extremely convenience. That is simply the only reason I have gone back there several times. Every single time I leave I am disappointed -- it is so frustrated. After last night, I will not return anytime soon. The food at Fire Creek is marginal at best -- yet their prices are extremely high. A friend and I sat in the bar -- she had two glasses of house chardonnay and I had 2 Stoli and tonic talls with a lime. She asked for a bit of fruit to float in her wine -- mind you her glass was filled less than half full as well. At the end of the night -- her wines were $9 each and my tall Stoli Vodka drinks were $6. The waiter charged her $1.75 for 3 blueberries. WHAT???? Now I'll talk about our waiter. He barely acknowledged and/or spoke to us the entire night. It was obvious to all the tables he was working with that he was less than interested in being at Fire Creek working. Fire Creek fails miserably in my book - they have one thing that is good and that is a steak salad. Ridiculous prices again. I think I will move on.

The ambience is nice here- it's definitely a refreshing change from the plethora of chain restaurants in West Des Moines. This is definitely a place to go on a date night or to celebrate an achievement or anniversary. I thought the food was mostly overpriced, especially for the pasta dishes. I could tell my noodles had been pre-cooked and sat around for quite some time before being added to my meal- they were really rubbery. For a $28 pasta dish, I at least expect them to cook my noodles properly considering how cheap penne noodles are at the grocery store. The sauce had good flavor, but the noodles ruined it. My husband ordered a steak and seemed to enjoy it. If I came back here, I would definitely try one of their fish preparations instead of pasta for my meal. I definitely recommend this restaurant as a great alternative to Cheesecake Factory for the local West Des Moinesians that like the ambience of an upscale, cozy restaurant. The location is a bit odd, tucked into a strip mall behind Walgreens, but it's definitely worth the trip for locals in the area.

This restaurant is a bit hidden in a strip mall and if you blink you could miss it, but once inside its a great surprise! The venue is nice and welcoming like you'd expect from a steakhouse type setting and the staff was absolutely delightful. Wednesday nights have $5 martinis when I visited and the dirty Grey Goose was made to perfection. I ordered a petite filet cooked to medium but it was much closer to well done, which is the only reason my review is a 4 star instead of 5. Seasoning and sides were delicious regardless. I would definitely go back.

Located behind Walgreens at the end of a strip mall seemed like a odd location for an upscale 'grill'. Quotes because the prices do not reflect the word grill IMO. But the food was great. Started with the Mosquito Bites, a lobster/crab wontons with a wonderful spicy Thai chili sauce. Though I wish there had been chunks of seafood inside it did have good flavor. I had the steak salad. And though they ignored my dressing on the side request it was delicious. Steak was perfect, dressing was spicy and excellent. And my mom had the pesto chicken flatbread which she raved about. Said the crust was a soft bread crust which was perfect. However the food wasn't quite worth the high prices. $60 for 2 people for app plus 2 lighter meals. The $8 glasses of wine didn't help (or did they?). May be better for business travelers who don't care about the expense.

I meet here weekly for a business group. They have a meeting room that accommodates about 40 people in rounds of 6-8. They do offer us a limited menu. I enjoy the fish tacos minus the sour cream and flour tortilla. GREAT light lunch once they add tax and tip I'm up to $14

I was surprised to see so many low ratings because I visit here every time I visit Des Moines (about once a month). The staff is so nice and take special care to remember the names of their guests. The Boursin chicken and steak medallions are incredible but the fish is great too! Their bar tender, Eric, is awesome. He is always smiling and making conversation with guests. A real treat!

My 4-star rating is for the ambience and steak salad. I am NOT a salad person, but this one is amazing with the filet cooked to order, includes these little julienned potatoes (glorified french fries), avocado, and a spicy ranch dressing. I throw in one of their awesome breadsticks for an extra dollar, and my day is made! I frequently order this to-go for lunch...at least once a week! I typically do take-out, but I have eaten in the restaurant a handful of times. I hate to admit that on more than one occasion, I have felt ignored by the staff when I need to be seated or pick up my to-go order. It obviously hasn't stopped me from going back. I ordered the prime rib, which I was told they are "known for." Girl...no. Don't lie. If you are known for this dish, then it is not in the positive sense. It was not the worst thing I've ever had, but I would never order it again. Save prime rib for Green Briar and Fleming's. My mom ordered the chicken picatta. It has the potential to be a wonderful dish because the flavors are all there. But, they quite literally DROWNED it in the lemon butter so it was too much...we practically had to press the pasta in a napkin to absorb all the liquid and the spinach was a goner at that point. Judging by these other reviews, it sounds like someone in the kitchen has a bit of a heavy hand and maybe you should just offer sauces on the side at this point? No need to ruin a perfectly great dish and it's an easy fix.

I was visiting from out of town, so I stopped in with a couple family members. The atmosphere was really nice; it was a great place to unwind and visit. The food was standard fare and was good, but not anything special. It really did not stand out to me as a place that I would be eager to return to, but then again we only had the lasagna and chicken. Maybe something more unique would have been more memorable.

My wife and I have made our minds up to avoid all restaurant chains. No PF Changs, Cheesecake Factory, Applebee's etc. Instead we began searching for local privately owned eateries. We stopped in at Firecreek and immediately loved the decor and atmosphere. A review of the menu while somewhat pricey convinced us that this is the price for a good restaurant that is not a chain. We both ordered the special which was the bone in filet. Big Mistake. The dish took nearly 45 min to serve and was covered with some slimed sauce and onion mixture. YUCHI! My son who had joined us ordered the Seabass and had a similar experience. 3 entrees no drinks and $140 with tip. No thanks I will not be back.

I was so unimpressed with the food here. Our crab Ragoons had very, very little filling. The chicken marsala was incredibly bland like it had too much flour in the sauce. I spent way too much for less than mediocre food. Our waitress was very kind though. The food unfortunately did not match the waitstaff.

Awesome place. Me and my co-workers went here twice. You've got to try the creme brulee cheesecake! Most of the people in there were dressed casually-dapple , (if thats an accurate description) while we were dressed as if we finished herding cattle, but when you tip well, it doesn't really matter how you're dressed. We were treated fairly and the customer service was always warm and friendly.

Great ambiance! Once you get inside, there are a few stone fireplaces, nice lighting and just a relaxing atmosphere. In addition, the wait staff was very kind and attentive. We went here for a special occasion dinner. I had a wonderful glass of wine (Silver Palm) while my boyfriend had a beer. I selected the Brown Sugar Scallops and he had the Whiskey Honey Chop. Both had great presentation and were delicious! If you are looking for a nice place to eat, this should be on your list!

Near our home, I would like to be a favorite. Atmosphere is good. Service fine. We just think the food is inconsistent in quality. But consistently just a touch expensive for what we get. This restaurant is caught in between for us. A little expensive to be a weekly go to. And not reliably great enough for special occasions. Keep trying.

The restaurant has really cool decor and ambiance and I loved that we were not at another chain restaurant in Des Moines. The calamari was chewy and had a spicy marinara sauce that I loved (I love spicy things!). My lamb chops were perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were so good I wolfed them down! But I have to say the best part of the meal was dessert. I got to try the apple dumpling, cheesecake and chocolate mousse and all three were phenomenal.

My first time at this restaurant was last night 2/5/13 The food was amazing - I had the Asiago Encrusted Chicken - which is served with a delicious lemon butter sauce over it. It was amazing. Lightly encrusted - the chicken was moist and butter sauce had a fantastic taste. I will return for sure.

I'm not a seafood connoisseur but this place has the best calamari I've ever had. Excellent batter and fried just right. I didn't like the texture of the inside of the mosquito bites (cream cheese, lobster, crab in a wonton wrapper and deep fried) so I ended up just eating the wrapper. Get the deep-fried mozzarella appetizer because the accompanying marinara sauce is superb. I would have drank it from the plate if it wasn't for the fact that three of my managers were sitting at the table. The rolls were really good--they arrived warm and fresh with a slightly sweet flavor. The meal took a turn for the worse when the entrees cam out. The Rotisserie Chicken, which is listed under the Chef's Specialties, was really dry and wasn't bursting with the flavor that the description hinted at. The vegetables were sad looking green beans that were drowning in butter although the baked potato and sour cream were all right. To recap, the appetizers were pretty tasty but avoid the Rotisserie Chicken for your main dish! I'd rate this as just "OK" instead of "A-OK" for the food but service was friendly and attentive so that bumped them up from two stars to three.

Had lunch here today. Not bad. They offered a fried fish sandwich and I asked if the fish could be pan seared...no dice...the fish comes pre-breaded. Went with the quasedillas, which were very good. Waitress was very nice and attentive. Lunch for 2 was about $30 with tip- fair enough. Good lunch, fair price.
