Some of the best Chinese food you will ever have is made here. I've eaten at some very good Chinese restaurants all over the country and when it comes to service, appetizers, soup, and the main entrees, Shanghai tops them all. I've been coming to Shanghai now for 4 years and every time I'm in town this is one of the few spots in the Des Moines area that I have to hit. Like all my favorite places, I've brought many different people here where it was their first time trying it and no one has ever thought the food was ok or decent. The hot and sour soup is wonderful, the egg rolls are ALWAYS excellent (always hot, crispy and NEVER greasy like most places) and the pot stickers are incredible as well. I've had the chicken with vegetables, Mongolian beef, fried rice, Generals chicken and Beef with string beans (my favorite) and I can honestly say that they are ALL excellent. I've been to many places where they have great appetizers but ok entrees or vice versa... Not here. Everything is consistently great. The price is not cheap (especially for the Des Moines area) but I have to say it's worth every penny and that is why I always make my trek to Shanghai whenever I am in town. Hoa is always smiling and very nice and the wait staff are always friendly as well. Great for taking your kids or hitting it for lunch with co workers (great value). Great place worth going to and I know many people who travel 10-15 minutes there for take out, and anyone who says their food is not good must be someone who thinks quality Chinese food can be found at the local Hy Vee or the food court at the mall.

A few nights ago I ordered their chicken Lo Mein and it smelled like cat piss and tasted how I would imagine cat piss tastes. Very Disappointed.

This is a great spot in Waukee. Most of the Asian places are good for take-out, but not for eating in. Shanghai has a great atmosphere, and we enjoy going here for a quiet dinner. In addition to the Chinese menu, they have recently added a Vietnamese menu also. This has been a great addition with some new choices such as Vietnamese spring rolls, pho, and pad Thai. The service is always good, the food is good, and it's a great place to go in Waukee.

Shanghai is my favorite Chinese food on the west side. I have never been disappointed. Love the mu shu pork, orange beef, and Mongolian beef. It's not too loud, so you can easily have a conversation and hear the other person. The servers are very nice and helpful. I have not tried the Vietnamese food that they recently added to the menu, but if it is anything like the Chinese food, you will enjoy it! Also love the crab Rangoons and egg rolls. Good stuff, maynard!!!!

The best Chinese food on the west side! The Mongolian beef is so good, it's hard for my whole family not to order the same thing. The hot and sour soup is a must have. I've been going here for 11 years, and it's as good as day one, and the owner/hostess is the sweetest lady ever!

I've lived in Waukee for a few years now, and have been to Shanghai at least a dozen times, if not more, as I enjoy their Chinese food. The interior decor is pleasant, as are the employees. They are professional, fast and friendly. I've been going more recently since the introduction of their Vietnamese menu. I'm a huge fan of Pho, so I had to try theirs when I saw it on the menu. I prefer to order the beef Pho or the beef Pho with meatballs, as I don't care for the tendons in more 'traditional' Pho. Their meatballs are great and homemade. The beef is tender and tasty, and the broth is just incredible. I always keep coming back for their Pho. It's such a delicious comfort food for any time of the year. My brother enjoys their noodle bowls, which are also tasty with a lovely presentation. Be sure to try their new spring and egg rolls! Both are fresh and full of flavor.

The best. Great quality food and friendly staff! The hot & sour soup is probably the best I've ever had. Lots of high quality herbs. I also had the Governor's chicken. Very clean flavors and lots of vegetables, impressive.

New to the area and read many good reviews about Shanghai. Tried it out for dinner last night and so glad we did. Good service, very good food. Hot and sour soup was nicely seasoned - not too sour, nice bite. Mongolian beef was tender. My husband had one of the Vietnamese dishes and thoroughly enjoyed it. We will be back, many times over.

Great food and is always consistent. I'm not a huge Chinese food fan and I still really enjoy this place. The sesame beef is awesome and so is the satay. My husband loves the hot and sour soup - says it's probably the best he's ever had.

One of the best Chinese places I've eaten. The food is top quality, big portions and decent prices. The service is always friendly and fast. I've also ordered take-out and it's always fast and tasty!

What a disappointment!!! We live in Waukee and were excited to try this place. First, we walked in to a half empty restaurant and were told there was a 10 minute wait for a table. WHAT!? Very awkward. We got our table and opened our menus and discussed walking out after seeing the prices. Although, we were already kind of let down by the wait. We decided to stick it out and ordered our food. Maybe we had high expectations because of the high prices but the food did not do it for us by any means. My recommendation: Go across the street and get better food for half the price without the wait.

Ok, I've lived in Chicago and there isn't a single Iowa restaurant that can compare with "big city" Asian fare. But, if your looking for the best Chinese in Iowa.... Then my vote goes to the Shanghai. Good food, Great Service, good atmosphere. This is one of my business entertainment favorites.

went once before - ordered kung pao shrimp and got 3 cups of carrots so it really came out kung pao carrots instead. decided to give it another try. one other couple was in the restaurant - ordered sesame scallops which were good and the other order was egg fu young. the egg patties were charcoaled black and the sauce tasted burnt because of that. we will now go to MANDARIN GRILL from now on.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. I would suggest going for lunch because their lunch time specials (served on weekends also!) are always good and the meals are only 5 or 6 bucks for a good lunch. I like the Kung Bao chicken.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
