The nicest place to eat in the Savanna area (although there's not a lot of competition for that designation), and your only choice if you want something other than bar food or fast food. Traditional German fare - pretty good, but virtually no options if you're a vegetarian. Pleasant outdoor beer garden in the summer.

They made it pretty plain that they cater to locals only. As a quiet couple passing through in the way to Chicago we were basically hustled out of there at 8pm as the last customers on a Friday night, despite posted hours until 9. Dishes rated to our taste significantly poorer than German cuisine found in the Amana colonies near where we live.

Great food plus great service. Coffee that had a robust flavor. I'm looking forward to dining there again.

Hillside Stables use to be one of my favorite restaurants. This was my first choice on Saturday night for their special, Rouladen. I enjoyed this dish countless times, at one time I even rented the restaurant for a wedding reception party of 30+ people because the food was excellent, great German food in Iowa. Since then the ownership has changed, same menu but a huge change in the quality of the food, I have been trying to like this but last night was the last time I will patronize the Hillside Stables. They have had several chances to keep me as a customer but have failed miserably. Last night my whole meal was served cold, the Rouladen had no flavor and was tough, it was as though they took a piece of pre cooked meat out of the refrigerator, rolled it up, forgot to put in the other ingredients and poured warm gravy over it. Even my sides of corn and mashed potato's were cold. In the past there were warm rolls for everyone at the table, this time they also were cold and there were four of us and only two rolls until we complained. When asked how our meal was I was honest and told them it was terrible, I then spoke with the owned and her reasoning behind the Rouladen being tough was because picking good meat was a "Crap Shoot" (her words). In the past you could eat this dish with a fork it was so tender, you see Rouladen is not made with a prime cut of meat but it is all in the preparation that makes this dish what it is. She had no excuse for why everything was cold, she did offer up free dessert, but this in no way made up for the terrible meal. This was just the last time I ate there, as I said I have been trying to like this but previous meals have also been disappointing, before this it was the Friday night Prime Rib special our party ordered this from medium rare to well done and it all looked the same, gray colored meat and again tough, complained then but didn't want to make a big deal of it as there was only one waitress that night and she was trying to take care of things the best as she could so that time not only was the food bad but service also suffered. This was just my last two experiences, there have been other disappointing meals which I believe supports the fact that this restaurant is going down hill. Very disappointed in this restaurant, I really hope they can get it together and start serving good food again.

When you first walk up you are stoked because you see their miniature horses the reside on the side of the restaurant. Once you get inside you think, Oh this is a nice ma and pa place. However, we came in with a large group and even called ahead of time. It took over an hour to get are food and we weren't able to order just anything. Most things we ordered were not available forcing us to change our orders. Waiting was a bit grueling and the waiter was also not educated on the restaurants beers. I understand she may have been underage but all waiters should have some type of beverage education if she is serving. Also the waiter was not properly dressed for her job. I understand its a small town but the least you could do is wear proper clothing and have your hair tied neatly rather than in a messy bun that could lead your hair to fly into our food(s). I wouldn't go back because the prices were high and it took too long to get our food. Once we got our food it was a bit burnt underneath and very dry. A big disappointment.
