The food isn't worth the price. I ordered a salmon salad at lunch, and without it being listed as an ingredient on the menu, came with cooked green beans on top and they were still cold inside. Gross.

We prefer Bluebird Cafe to Bluebird Diner. The menus are similar, but the service at the North Liberty location is much better. The omelets are really tasty and big. They also have really good coffee. It's a really great casual breakfast/lunch spot. The outdoor seating is nice too!

I had breakfast here. The food came quickly and the wait staff was friendly and very attentive. My meal was just okay. The hashbrowns were kind of bland and not very moist and the sourdough toast was really dry. Eggs were great though!

Today's visit was an early lunch with my dad and brother. All of the seating was filled and we were offered to sit at the bar or in the wait seating; luckily we only had to wait five minutes or less until we were seated. We ordered the Crab Cake Po'Boy, BLT, and the Pork Tenderloin. The first two sandwiches were good and plentiful--I loved the spread on my po'boy. However, the tenderloin was SO THIN. It looked like it had been run over by a Mack truck, I couldn't believe they allowed it to come out of the kitchen. We notified the manager and she was kind enough to take it back and remove it from our bill. This was only my second visit here but I've enjoyed both of my meals. Bluebird has a cute diner feel and has items on the menu that are new and refreshing.

The incredible shrinking pancakes! Bluebird has the best pancakes around. I've been going there since they opened. You used to get 3 full-plate sized pancakes. Now, they look like a child's portion. I was there with my father (who always orders them) and we had been talking about how they had been getting smaller. When his arrived, it was almost a joke - they were tiny (the size of a coffee cup saucer) and he almost sent them back. Subsequent visits have evidence that this is now the norm. I don't know if they have a new cook or if this a cost-cutting measure, but don't come here for the TINY pancakes. I hope the owners take notice and address this. Get your chefs to be consistent, or if this is the new bluebird policy, correct the menu to "silver dollar" pancakes. Ridiculous.

The second rendition of Bluebird is a valiant attempt at the recreating the original, but overall has some work to replicate the entire experience. Located in a strip mall up in North liberty, they've got a ton more parking than the IC location and have a bit more seating. The inside is very up to date, but lacks the character that makes the downtown locale so charming. That said, there's plenty of pieces of flare on the walls and they seem to be adding to it at a pretty consistent rate. The menu is a bit different from that of the original location, but does have most of the classics. The Krakatoa omelette, amazing french toast, and some great burgers are all available and out in full force here. Notable additions to the breakfast menu include the buffalo chicken omelette. I tried this beast and it was about a 7/10. Not a ton of meat, but good flavor and something different for the morning. The coffee was good and pretty standard. The servers here all seem to be a little on the green side. Ours was having trouble with keeping orders straight, but was fairly knowledgable about what was available here. The service was a lot slower than what we've come to expect from Bluebird and while I'm sure they'll continue to improve, it seems that the experience is becoming fairly commonplace. We'll continue to come here while they're working out the kinks, but the Bluebird crew is going to need to step up their game if they're going to establish an allegiance from the North Liberty folks.

This 5 star rating is sole based on the Breakfast at Bluebird Cafe. My wife and I have enjoyed many breakfast meals at Bluebird. The omelets are amazing and I prefer the all meat omelets and it almost taste like they marinate there meat it's so good! The staff is always very friendly. The only "downfall" is that it is extremely busy especially on the weekends, sometimes up to an hour wait, but you can blame the restaurant for that, it's really a good thing. I would say that it is definitely worth the wait but maybe try going during the week sometimes and it might make your experience a little better.

I went to the Bluebird Cafe with my son for dinner. I expected a little more. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger for myself and the kids' menu chicken strips for him. I was asked how I wanted my burger cooked, and I said medium. It came back well done and was pretty dry. Usually when you get onions you have to pull the rings apart and leave some out, but the chef had other plans to ensure that wasn't an issue. I got one small center ring that rivaled the diameter of a half dollar. I'm guessing he figured the pineapple garnish they put on every plate makes it up. They offered a variety of cheeses, and I do take some responsibility there for not indicating I wanted the jack cheese (but I also wasn't asked), so I ended up with American. I was halfway through when asked how the meal was, so I expressed my disappointment and that I didn't have time to wait to have it fixed, so they did take half off the $9 burger. My kid's chicken strips were only about 1/8 inch thick and looked a little flimsy, but he's 6 and didn't really care. The service was all right. What you'd expect at a diner. It was decent inside. They also serve beer to wash down the dry burger I had, so that's a plus. They have a variety of seating options including the typical booths, 2 person tables to the side, and an unusually large 2 section counter with barstools to sit at that would've been cool to sit at for a breakfast or something. Probably not the place for a bigger group, as it's not very big and your counter would be the only option. Overall, I'm really hoping the dead burger and flat chicken strips were an exception to the norm at Bluebird. In an up and coming area like New Liberty with much competition, there are plenty of other places to attain some solid American fare to drown out your hunger. The diner idea and menu options they have going are good, but it's a shame it wasn't delivered better. From reading some other reviews, it sounds like breakfast might be your way to go as long as you don't mind some burnt toast from time to time.....

DELICIOUS food. If you come at dinner, you can order off of the whole menu. Service was friendly and timely. I had my omelet as a scramble and it was delicious. Others in my party didn't like their eggs that hard but I don't like them wet, so I liked mine (could have had WAY more cheese though--it was almost undetectable). The atmosphere is comfortable and not too hipstery (think "nouveau diner"). Prices of food items were incredibly decent (as per this Seattleite). Would definitely return!

More space, bigger booths, and easier parking, but not nearly as tasty as the original location in Iowa City. The Slammin' Salmon is traditionally my favorite but I've ordered it four times at this North Liberty location and have been really disappointed every time - the capers and creme fraiche sauce have been sparse (the capers were once dried up and crunchy even), the dish doesn't come with an additional cup of the glorious caper+ sauce combination, and the salmon ratio hasn't been as generous at this location as it is at the Iowa City location.

Updating my review yet again! Bluebird is back up to 4 stars. Someone apparently listened when others complained about the pancakes. They're not back to their original size, but they're larger than they were and the flavor is back again! If I come back and those pancakes have been futzed with again, I'm done. I love this place, but I love my pancakes, too. BLUEBIRD! KEEP THE CONSISTENCY! OK, so here's my initial review with some tweaks: Although I live in Chicago, I visit the Iowa City area pretty routinely and I always make a stop here for breakfast at least once per visit. Their pancakes are out of this world, their omelette creations are really tasty, and their service is surprisingly good even though some of their wait staff are kind of interesting. I've been here 20-30 times in the past few years and I've only had a bad experience once (aside from the multiple complaints I had during The Great Pancake Abatement of 2014). They were very accommodating about my issues and I left as a satisfied customer in the end. Recommendations: 1) The pancakes. They're fluffy and delicious! 2) The Krakatoa (but tell them to go easy on the citrus cream cheese or else it's a bit overwhelming - and I'm not the only reviewer who seems to think this). 3) The Buffalo Omelette (it's not very spicy, so ask for some hot sauce if you're looking for heat!) 4) The hash browns. I hate hash browns. No, seriously, I freaking hate them. But not here. This is the only restaurant I've ever been to where I enjoyed the hash browns. They're unbelievable. So, if you usually hate hash browns like I do, at least give these a try. Stay Away From: 1) Biscuits and gravy. I'm a big fan of biscuits and gravy, but these were so greasy and floury that I had to send them back. I hate to use such a word, but I thought they were actually disgusting. 2) Crab Cakes Benedict. I only had them once and they tasted very fishy. "Fresh" was not a word I could use to describe the crab cakes. My friend (who lives in town) says he orders them regularly and they've always been very good. Maybe I just had a batch on an off-day. All in all, give the old Bluebird a try! And don't forget to try the pancakes not that they're no longer being rationed like bullion cubes in a concentration camp!

Good stuff but an incredibly long wait for a Sunday breakfast. I suppose that speaks to the food and service. We were all happy with ours. Check out the specials and the Krakatoa potatoes are a must!

Always great for breakfast. There is always a wait on Sundays, so get there early. Chicken fried steak, cinnamon roll french toast, pancakes.. All good. Stay away from the biscuits and gravy; sadly those are always a miss here. Service is friendly.

Love their breakfast menu! Not only is their food delicious but they have a full bar and outdoor seating. I love the Krakatoa omelet as well as the slammin salmon omelette! Make sure to try the twist on the mimosa made with lemonade.

Took my friend here who was visiting from Baltimore for breakfast. Since I read pst reviews I opted to not get the pancakes and had a bacon egg and cheese sandwich with a cup of coffee. The coffee came with free refills (always nice) and the sandwich had a delicious pesto sauce which made in non - run-of-the-mill. My friend had an interesting egg dish with pepper chili (no meat!) and she loved it! I was happy I found a place that gave her a great impression of food in Iowa. The service was friendly and we were not rushed! All-in-all thought it was a good value for the price and quality and will be back! Pros: Great food staples as well as more creative options. Rotating breakfast and dinner specials Cons: Need a better website, so online menu. Have to check their FB to see what's new for the week.

I enjoy their breakfast menu items, but I have not been impressed by their dinner menu at this location. I have ordered a variety of evening items ranging from burgers to specials and was unhappy a majority of the time. Food temperature has been one of the major issues I've observed. I ordered a tiger shrimp pasta with a cream sauce that was lukewarm... I would recommend the Hemingway Benedict! My kids love their pancakes. You can not go wrong with breakfast here.

They whip their eggs!!!! Yay! Plus the wait staff was witty and fun. Great service; great food! Could use more of an atmosphere....but it is in a strip mall. It is a must go! So, 4 stars based on strip mall location.

Always a wise decision when finding myself here. While they do serve very delicious food throughout the day, why bother looking past the breakfast menu? Hard to go wrong with any options on the menu. The food is reasonably priced and the service never fails to be excellent. I'm hard pressed to think of a better place for breakfast in North Liberty.

Bluebird is the best place around for breakfast! The owners are there most of the time and the staff is attentive and friendly. My wife and I go there at least once a week. Try it and you'll see why.

We had just eaten at the Iowa City Bluebird Cafe a week ago and absolutely loved, and I mean LOVED our omelet and house-made sausage patties. I raved about the place so much, that this Sunday we decided to try the North Liberty location for a late breakfast: 1. undercooked, soggy pancake -- left it on our plate 2. over-loaded citrus cream cheese in the Krakatoa omelet, so had to scrape most of it out on to my plate 3. house-made patty sausage fried to a crisp, hard and not very eatable. We each took one bite, and left the rest.. 4. French toast: this was delicious I will definitely go back to the Iowa City location, but will not be going back to North Liberty location, unless it is for a cup of their wonderful coffee.

We went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. My husband had a fried egg sandwich with bacon, my father enjoyed the Krakatoa omelet, and I was allowed to order off the kids menu, and went for the Elvis themed PB and banana sandwich with a few slices of bacon. I opted for a side of fresh fruit. The place was busy, so we had to wait for a few minutes, but then realized we could sit at the counter and be served immediately. We were quickly greeted by a friendly employee, and our order was taken as soon as we were ready. My dad praised the coffee (and he's a hard man to please in that department), and he barely had time to finish his first cup before our food was placed in front of us with a smile. Everyone enjoyed their meal, my fruit was tasty and fresh, and had a sprinkling of citrus juice over it, making it extra delicious. Everything was clean, fast, prompt and friendly. I commented that I was glad we had a fun, nearby option to take friends and family to when visited. A great discovery, and I can't wait to go back. We sat near the order window, so were able to watch other plates of amazing looking food be whisked out to other customers. The pancakes looked like perfection, especially as the cook dumped a generous handful of fresh, cut strawberries over the top just before they went to the table. I know what I'm getting next time! Prices were reasonable. My only complaint really is the location in a strip mall - but that's pretty much all of North Liberty, it seems!

The cinnamon roll french toast sounds awesome, but in reality it is not as good as french toast and not as good as a cinnamon roll. Funny how that works. I also had the Krakatoa omelet. The description said it had "citrus cream cheese", and I guess I assumed that there would only be a little. Instead, it was a cream cheese overload. I think it would have been a lot better without the cream cheese period. My wife got the Florentine omelet, which she liked. She did remark that the pesto looked like panda poo. Overall, I was disappointed. I would give it 2 stars, but since my wife liked hers I can go three. Doubt I'll be back though unless she insists.

My family and I went to the Bluebird on a weekday afternoon. The place was a bit small but there seemed to be plenty of seating. We were lucky when we arrived as there was one booth available. We were seat quickly and took our time perusing the menu. We all ordered ice teas which were quite flavorful. My son ordered the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. I ordered the Corn Beef Hash and my husband ordered the Italian Beef sandwich. We all tried the french toast as my son ate nearly all of it but left one ring of the toast. It was flavorful and something I thought I would come back to enjoy. My son loved it as well. The Italian Beef sandwich was juicy and well seasoned though the fries were slightly above mediocre in my eyes. I absolutely loved the corned beef hash. The turnips and parsnips really added to the hash's flavor and texture. The cost was reasonable as well. I look forward to trying other menu items.

I have tried the North Liberty location twice now. Burnt toast both times and I mean black burnt. I don't understand how one would actually deliver the toast to the table. Both times I was told they could do nothing for me. Really? Unable to comp me a buck for toast. I boycotted months between 1st and second trip. Now boycotting for life, it's been a year since trip two. Oh and second time my burnt toast arrived at my table after I finished my meal. Yelping a place to eat tonight and became motivated by another reviewer to finally leave my review. Lost a lot of business from me for a measly buck.

You'll always get a table quickly because the food and service are very poor. 1 hour and 15 minutes to get two burgers, a plate of eggs and a sandwich.....with only 2 other tables in the place. Sad, sad, sad

One word. Lukewarm. I got eggs Benedict and my wife got a cheeseburger. All was lukewarm. She asked for fresh fries and they were good. She reported her hamburger was juicy and very flavorful. Would've been great had it been hot. Ironically, there seemed to quite a bit of activity at the window trying to get the plates out, but whatever they were doing up there wasn't working.

I too don't understand the negative reviews. We love Bluebird--the burgers and breakfast dishes we've had have all been great (the eggs benedict especially). I've had the grilled cheese with ham and also one of the salads. But the big surprise is the dinner specials; a few weeks back we had a seared tuna with an Israeli couscous pilaf that was great, and a duck breast that was equal to or better than any we've had in IC's fine dining restaurants. We were blown away, and I can't wait to go back and try some of the other specials.

I'm somewhere between 3 and 4 stars here. I like the food just fine for the most part. But the eggs at brunch tend to be overlooked, which is just not acceptable from a diner. On the other hand, the food that's billed as spicy is actually spicy which isn't true about many other places in the area that turn out bland food....I'm looking at you masala Indian...
