We were heading west on I 80 and a storm was coming right at us so we decided to stop for breakfast. We were tired of the fast food joints so we looked for a cafÃ© and found Menlo CafÃ© in Menlo Iowa. A quaint little town 3 miles off the highway, we walk into the restaurant and a bunch of guys are playing cards waiting for the rain to pass. Jody the waitress came right over with the menus coffee and water. Denise, the owner, came out and told us all about the pictures on the walls and the doorknobs in the center of the photographs that used to be in her grandmas house. We met Lyle the guy who had made all of the wood frames that encased the photographs. We left with a full tummy and the rain had passed through. If you're tired of the fast food joints along I 80 and want a cute town and great atmosphere with good food and fast service go to Menlo cafÃ©.

the food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. I feel I should write this review however because I did have an upset stomach for a few days after having their burger. unlikely to happen again, and the food was so good that I might even try another, but the burger did do a number on my stomach.

Traveling back home from a long East coast trip. Decided we were tired of fast, processed food! On a whim, we decided to yelp local restaurants in the area... happened to be about 5 miles from Menlo & this was the only place that came up. SO GLAD WE STUMBLED ALONG THIS PLACE !!! The place was packed with locals from the tiny little town for the lunch hour. The staff/owners were very friendly and made some excellent recommendations. Mom liked her patty melt, girls enjoyed their bacon cheeseburgers & hubby and I LOVED the tenderloin sandwich the owner recommended.... it was delicious!!! We also had two of the small chef salads.... four sodas.... and three ice creams.... $40!!!! Great food, great price, great service!!!!

This small town cafe is awesome! People are nice and friendly when you come in and service was down home. The food was great. I had the lasagna special which came with veggies, Texas toast, a salad AND desert all for $6.50! The lasagna was better than mine! And I make great lasagna :) A little of the beaten path but worth it. They are only open for breakfast and lunch. Call and check if they are open before you go.

I was driving from Omaha to Des Moines and checked out the area for a place to eat at. I saw the other review and went and tried it. I got the menu, nothing special, but home-cooking. The specials were Chicken Salad sandwich or Ham Balls. Well I had no clue what ham balls were, so I had the chicken salad. This is not one of my favorites because normally it is very chunky, so bits fall out everywhere, and then people put stuff in it, like raisins or nuts, or celery. This was the BEST tasting sandwich I have ever had. The chicken salad was almost ground up and I could not tell you what was in it but wonderful. The coleslaw was sweet. The service was great. It was $4.50 for the sandwich and a tea, OMG. I am now moving from Texas to Des Moines, and will be going back here again. Stunning and thanks for sending a review in.
