I went here over lunch. Service was a bit slow before getting my order taken, and after lunch waiting to get the check, but once taken, lunch arrived blazing fast. Most Mexican food places I go to in Des Moines are fast like this for lunch, but I have not had the same experiences at other restaurants while in Marshalltown. I liked the salsa -- it actually had a hint of spice (something usually missing at Midwest restaurants). This is the same owners as El Portal, but I think I liked this location better. Nothing overly exciting, but nothing bad either.

Very good, quick semi authentic Mexican food. Free chips and homemade salsa, YUM!

The food is always great, the service is lacking at times. It's been under remodeling for several months so I'm hoping to see some waitstaff improvements when we go again once they are open. Mostly it's the feeling of staff not wanting to be there and/or some them do not speak English that well so there's a bit of a communication barrier. But, the food is great!

La Carreta had an odd collection of foods, that was a mix of cheap Mexican, cheap New Mexican, and cheap Tex-Mex; none of it done the way it should be. All in all I was pretty disappointed, though the Chile Relleno (which they call a Chile Poblano) was pretty decent. None of the food had any spice to it, and the salsa was bland as could be. Maybe I didn't order the right food, but when the salsa tastes like tomato juice I doubt if they can make anything well.

I went here with a friend to catch up and have some good Mexican food. The food is plentyful and priced affordably. The small margaritas are $3.50 a piece and tasty. I had the Texas Fajitas which had beef, chicken and steak with peppers and onions. I thought it was flavorful and decently priced. My friend had the chicken fajitias which she said was good as well. If you go here to actually talk to friends with dinner, make sure there is not a marchaci singer singing that night. The singer was good, but very loud which made it a hard to have conversation. I would say that the service is spotty at best. Our waiter did not seem interested in waiting on our table. He seemed annoyed that we needed a minute to look over the menu to place our drink order. When we did order our drinks, he neglected to bring my water with the drinks. The decor is somewhat dank and dreary which is such a disappointment since this restaurant has such potential. If you want a bright, cheerful, quiet restaurant with good food, go to El Portal which is owned by the same owners.

The food is good but the service is bad. I wanted a refill on my coke and I had to hunt down a waiter. they were all behind the bar texting on their cell phones!
