Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

It has super cheap lunches! The margaritas are also cheap. The service is usually pretty quick. The decor is pretty lame (it isn't even Mexican-related...there are a few pictures with French writing on them). The food is okay. It's definitely not the best. It's typical American-Mexican food. If you're looking for okay, cheap Mexican food and drinks, this is the place for you!

I am normally not too picky about Mexican American food. Just give me fresh tomatoes and avocados, and possibly some good guacamole. La Cabana is basically horrible arrangements of canned refried beans, yellow rice, and canned salsa. Do they make anything on their own? Pretty sure why anyone goes to this place is for their margaritas. Which, to be fair is a fine reason to go anywhere. But that doesn't excuse the fact that the food is horrible. No amount of drunkenness can negate how bad the food is. If I go, I usually get a vegetable fajita and flan. Both are pretty standard and they can't really mess up grilled veggies or a custard. Just don't get anything that requires cheese (they use Land O'Lakes American cheese, not Mexican at all), salsa, or refried beans to flavor your dish.

La Cabaña is probably one of the better "Midwest Mex" joints in the area (and also the better one of the two currently open in town, in my opinion). It's cheap, and the food is basically okay: you can get "guacamole salad" (=iceberg with guacamole on it), standard (i.e., weak but OK) margaritas, and a range of oval plate specials. They even started offering a rendition of pollo blanco like the one at Casa Margaritas (white sauce, chicken wrapped in tortilla, with singles melted on top; it must be tried once). Unfortunately, the food is also sometimes really very salty, especially the rice and beans. Many of the dishes with cheese, such as chile poblanos, also use something like American cheese, which gives them a slightly plasticky(?) feel. After a fateful experience with one of the seafood quesadillas, which involved an un-agreeable combination of imitation crab stick and cheese singles, I have to agree with Nat Z. that it's safer to stick with things with less melted cheese, like fajitas, or tilapia, or the Santa Rosa (chicken and shrimp). Tip: they do have a really good roasted salsa, but it's not the salsa that they bring you automatically with your chips when you sit down. It comes with some entrees, and it's less ketchupy than the "service salsa", and it even has a little bit of a kick or bite. Also: for some dishes, you can ask for less salt, and it seems to cut down the salt level a bit. That probably wouldn't work for dishes that have pre-made sauces, but I haven't tried to test it with a range of options.

Food is really cheap and you get what you pay for, lots of it. And you can get a mug of beer so big, you'll have to go pee halfway through it. Definitely don't order another one if you're driving.

Received rave reviews so I figured I'd give it four separate chances before letting Yelp know what the story is... If you love garishly-colored decor and greasy food, then La Cabaña is your restaurant. A menu of dozens of items gives way to a few basic plate configurations, often comprising unusually salty refried beans, iceberg lettuce, an abundance of sour cream, and some small amount of guacamole. Fajitas are probably the only decent thing on the menu but cost a lot more than everything else; things are not that expensive. There is a bar in the back, sort of, but I've never seen anyone there, as it's not exactly a proper bar setting. The selection of Mexican beers is respectable, and the selection of other liquor and beer with the exception of tequila is mediocre. I suppose the second star is from the fact that I like a business being across the street, lighting up the street at night and bringing foot traffic into the downtown. Even if I were just paying $8 for a dinner, I could still eat at the nearby Phoenix Café for the same price, except enjoying local vegetables or meat.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in Grinnell was not in Grinnell. Newton's La Cabana offered tasty, cheap Mexican food. When they announced that they would inhabit the old Grinnell Coffee Company, I leapt for joy. The heart of the menu is their combination plates, mixing and matching burritos, tacos, enchiladas, refried beans, and spanish rice. All are delicious and served promptly. One Saturday last month, a friend and I had lunch there. With tip it came to $9. I loves me my Taco John's potato oles, but La Cabana is tastier, faster, higher quality, and I am served. Nat is right - the decor is garish, right down to the plaster fountain in the middle of the restaurant and the fake cabana roofs over each booth lining the sides of the restaurant floor. The bar is small and tucked in the back. Relax, it's a Mexican restaurant - order your $1.99 margarita and your dos equis, eat your abundant chips and salsa, and be happy.

La Canana is your basic Mexican-American restaurant. The kitchen is a bit less heavy handed with the cheese than many places, but if you're looking for a light meal you've got the wrong cuisine. Most menu items are less than $10 though I usually get something with shrimp which runs little more. Beers are a sizable selection of the usual Mexican imports and some uninteresting domestics. Margaritas are mostly cheap. Beware the specialty margaritas. They might have higher end tequila in them, but you'll never notice over the cheap mix.
