Truly a Grinnell staple. BAD's winning formula hasn't really changed since I was a wee one in the 80s. They get their bread fresh daily from Hansen's Bakery down the alleyway, and they slice their own coldcuts. I almost always get the Danforth because of its unique blend of spices--it's delicious and you won't taste anything like it at a franchise sandwich joint. If it's between 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. I pick BAD over Jimmy John's or Subway every time. If you spend any time in Grinnell, you ought to have coffee at the Saint's Rest and grab a sandwich from BAD in the back of the shop. Remember--Danforth on wheat for the win. ;)

So, so sad. This little counter deli was the best sandwich in town for decades. Whenever I'm back in Grinnell, BAD was on my list of musts. Maybe sharing a space with an existing restaurant isn't such a great idea. It doesn't make sense to have to wait 20 minutes for a sandwich. And now that they can no longer get the yummy bread from the bakery that closed, the sandwich is just a sandwich. I would compare the sandwich I had with one you can pick up at a 7-11. Yeah, not good at all.

Cash only establishment that shares a building with Saint's Rest Coffee, located in the rear. Available sandwiches are posted on a cork board of laminated yellow post-it sized paper on the left, alongside available Block & Barrel chips. The Drinks are located on the right. The sandwich comes in four sizes; mini, small, medium, and large, they range from $4-$14 and made when ordered. I love that the ingredients are kept in a refrigerator on the right, and it's constantly opening and closing when fetching the ingredients you desire. Meats and Vegetables are slice then and there on a cutting board or on the deli slicer. Jalapenos, green peppers, german/yellow mustard, bacon and peppercinis are an additional .25 cents. Everything is fresh, but the sandwiches are just ok, something that you can easily do yourself, it reminds me of the footlong subs that you can buy at Safeway deli. Mine was drenched with Mayo, so if youre not a huge fan of mayo I would ask for it on the side.

This is a coffee shop, not a bookstore as far as I could tell. There's a deli in the back with decent sandwiches- not super memorable, but filling, fast, and not too pricey. Seems like it would be a good place to study. Near the college and the city park. They don't take credit or debit cards, so be prepared.

BAD is a long-time institution in Grinnell - I loved them when I was in college two decades ago, and they haven't changed a bit in two decades (that's a compliment). Currently located in the back of the Saint's Rest Coffeeshop, they serve only first class cold cuts, fresh veggies, heaping portions and - the best part of the sandwich - Danish Made bakery rolls, baked fresh across the block each morning. Best sandwiches ever.

I always forget about this place, and am really glad when I remember to go. Their hours are a little limited, and they only take cash. But the sandwiches are super fresh/delicious and whoever is working makes them really nicely. Definitely one of Grinnell's little hidden treasures.
