Basic American menu: chicken, steaks, sandwiches, fried fish, nightly specials, and a couple of pastas. The inside is dated and it never fails there is at least one waitress sitting a couple tables behind the counter taking her break each time we come- seems a little rude when you see someone just sitting there but not able to help you ( maybe staff should "break" elsewhere. The free potato soup is a plus and with a little added salt, our family loves it; there is a reason they sell it up to the gallon size. I got the fried chicken sandwich and it was homemade large and juicy. I loved how I knew it was fresh real chicken. My little one get the chicken strips, fries, peaches, and a scoop of ice cream which is a lot for a three year old- good value. It is a good place for a simple American meal, I wouldn't come frequently but it offers good quick meal close to our home.

I have been driving by this place for years, but finally decided to give it a try when I purchased a Groupon for it. The inside looks clean but small towny, lots of pictures of deer on 80s looking wood paneling wall. I asked how long the restaurant has been around for and the waitress told me 34 years. The main customers seem to be older people and families. The atmosphere for a Saturday was relaxed and roomy. The wait staff was friendly, but the food took a while to come out. The food is unapologetic classic american. I got the prime rib and my girlfriend got fried chicken. Before the meals come out, you get a free giant bowl of potato soup and a little loaf of warm bread, both of which were so so. The main dishes were also pretty ok but not flippin amazing. Overall, the quality of the food seems to be ok, but the dishes themselves are boring, but I don't fault The Corn Patch for that. The Corn Patch isn't trying to be the latest flash in the pants tapa/fusion/vegan eatery, they know they are old-time American and they embrace it. Although, I almost never have any desire to eat food so boring when I go out to eat, but on a rare occasion I do. Last night was one of those nights. The only thing I really didn't like about this place was the cocktail I ordered because it was on special. It was god awful.

You're hungry when you walk in cause you won't be when you leave. We had a hankering for sandwiches tonight. Sat right away again on a Friday evening. Orders in right away and the waitress was great. An order of fried pickles were delicious. The complimentary soup filled up everyone but i saved room. I got the hamburger with a side of cottage cheese. I even slipped a fried pickle on it and filled up. Everyone was happy all around and the groupons were handy. The interior is very homey on the dining side. On the other side hidden is a bar and a few video games. We rolled out with food in boxes and full bellies.

The fried chicken on Sunday's is amazing! The worst part is trying to decide which side to get with it! The amazing homemade cheesy hash browns, REAL mashed potatoes and gravy or green beans. It's just all sooooo good!if you haven't checked it out on Sunday make sure you do soon!

Came here for dinner on a Friday night at 7pm. This place was packed wall to wall. We still only waited maybe 10 min for a seat. We had the ribeye and the filet. The flavor was awesome on both. Both were slightly over cooked though. I ordered medium rare and they were maybe med to med well. The salad was fresh. The bread was warm. The potato soup was good. The service was spot on. I look forward to returning and trying something else next time. I'll try to fit this place in once a month or so.

O.k. so the potato soup is good, but that is about it. My wife had a ribeye steak, pretty expensive. It was pre-cooked and probably warmed up in the microwave. No taste. No spices. No good. My philly cheessteak was o.k., but no au jus. It just seemed like a place that was doing everything to cut corners.

The girl who seated us and the woman who waited on our table were both friendly and helpful. Our server was great at timely drink refills, bringing extra condiments, and making sure we were happy (without being there "too much," if you know what I mean). The bread was warm and fluffy and came with whipped butter. The complimentary potato soup was good (potato, bacon, side of saltines), and there was a big serving bowl of it. Might be a bit salty for some, but we liked it. And where else do they give you complimentary potato soup?! I think that's a pretty neat "freebie." Their fried chicken was tasty -- not dry, nice and juicy. Their burger was pretty average; not going to be my #1 burger place, but it was solid. Great coleslaw -- they use celery seed, which tastes so fresh and amazing. The steak fries were good (they were pretty much your standard steak fries, so if you like 'em, you'd like 'em! Haha). The salads are iceberg-y, which isn't my thing, BUT their blue cheese dressing was good enough that I ate all my iceberg lettuce leaves. Portions of EVERYTHING were generous; two members of our party shared a meal and still had to box some up at the end. I found their prices a bit high. I'm not knocking them--ya gotta do whatcha gotta do to stay in biz, right?--but the prices were definitely a few dollars more than I would've expected to pay for each item we ordered.

The value and quality of food you find here is unbeatable in the Des Moines area. I always leave here absolutely stuffed. You get free all you can eat potato soup with your meal. You get fresh baked bread with your meal as well. The menu is extensive and they have daily specials. The wait staff here is very professional and attentive and have had no problems handling our large parties. They have Groupon deals as well as coupons if you are staying at Cutty's campground. I will be sure to keep coming back here!

Seriously pass this place up...If you ask questions about your order you will never be right with the woman that runs this place.my wife ordered me a ribeye and I seriously ended up with a new York strip or a sirloin. When I called asking or mentioning I dont believe I got the right steak the woman said the man that fixed it knows his steaks.. well he don't know medium rare because the steak I got was over cooked.I will say our dogs enjoyed it.

We used a groupon there tonight. We probably won't be going back anytime soon. Everyone's food was just mediocre. They bring a pot of potato soup to your table to start no matter what you order. That was very nice, but the flavor was just okay. My tenderloin sandwich had a big piece of fat in it which weirded me out. My son had Mac n cheese off the kids menu. It was very runny. The wait staff was polite and worked hard.

My main attraction here is the potato soup. Great comfort soup especially during a cold winter's night. Rest of food is okay. Wife does like the Lucy's chicken. Staff are always extremely friendly.

I like the steak and the hash browns. The fried chicken and the ribs are alright. Pretty plain. If you like salty foods this place is not for you.

Was in Grimes today (a Thursday) over the lunch hour. Stopped at the Corn Patch to try out something local. Was seated right away and the waitress was friendly and busy - I think she was the only one there. Ordered the day's special - mushroom swiss burger with a salad and fries. The salad was pretty plain, just lettuce and dressing, lots of dressing. The burger came out fairly quickly, but was on the thin side and the mushrooms were definitely out of a can - not sauteed. Was okay, but nothing special to make me want to come back.

We purchased a Groupon from the Corn Patch and were pleasantly surprised. The food was straight from grandma's kitchen. Everything was homemade and delicious. I should mention, you get a TON of food, so it might be wise to get something to share. (Now I see why the prices are a little higher than expected.) Each meal starts with endless potato soup and fresh made bread with whipped butter. We had the fried chicken, and no kidding, a half of chicken came out on each plate. It was fried golden and the meat was juicy. I usually don't eat foods like this but had heard they were famous for their comfort food. I can see why! The wait staff was prompt and courteous. She checked on us numerous times and helped accommodate to our little guy. Just to be fair, the restaurant is old. The decor and furniture could use some updating. With that being said, everything was in nice condition and clean. I would recommend for a family style meal. Make sure you go in hungry!

I expected small town feeling and good old fashioned meals, which there were, but what I didn't expect to get with the meal was the manager basically yelling at all of the employees in front of all of the customers. I couldn't believe that. And I just felt like there was a lot of yelling coming from the back and just everywhere. I know some of the employees were new but customers don't need to see that. The food was good and you get a lot to eat I just didn't need dinner and a show. I had heard very good things about this place, but it just didn't live up to the expectations. Overall the food was good, but I felt too involved in the whole training process. I dont know if I'll be back...

The Corn Patch has good down home country cooking. The dining room atmosphere aligns nicely with the food as it has a country feeling with dark wood and wildlife and outdoor wall hangings. The exterior can use some work along with the parking lot but don't let that stop you from going inside. You will never leave this restaurant hungry as they give you a ton of food. So much that they are kind enough to allow you to purchase one full dinner to share and add all you can eat soup, salad and bread to it for $6.95. We were right at $20 for both of us doing that and were still plenty full. The only side that you cannot substitute is their potato soup which, believe me, you would not want to substitute this anyway. It has really good flavor! I enjoyed their warm small loaf of bread as well. I had cottage cheese and peaches which were both just what you would expect. We chose to have all dark meat fried chicken (their special that night). When I asked my boyfriend how would you describe the chicken, he said "good!" I will leave it at that. I would say, give The Corn Patch a try for some good down home country cooking.

It felt.... musty. I mean, the restaurant was clean and all, but it felt outdated. It was pretty dead during lunch on a weekend while we were there. My kids didn't particularly like the food. It was a bit bland. Not bad, just no oomph. It's like when your mom tries a new recipe and you really want to say it's the greatest thing in the world, but all you can really do is nod, smile and try to eat more. The exterior and parking lot is pretty run down. Not condemnable or anything, but faded. Hours were kinda screwy, too.

It was ok, they seemed to be understaffed on a rainy Sunday evening. Our service started out ok, but our waitress seemed nervous and unsure, maybe new, then as the restaurant started to fill up, I heard the manager say to her, "There are only two of you, so every other table is yours." I looked around and already counted 11 tables seated, some of them fairly large parties. That's a lot, in my opinion, and the speed of service went downhill. She also seemed flustered and couldn't remember who ordered what, setting food down in front of the wrong person. The food was exactly as I expected - simple, "country" dishes, maybe things your grandmother would cook. Fried chicken, steak, sandwiches, etc. Side dishes were things like baked potato, green beans, peaches, cottage cheese. The thing is, this would have been fine, except that the food is quite expensive for the atmosphere. $11 for spaghetti? $20 for other dinners? I'll acknowledge that you get a lot of food, but when it's competing with The Radish up the road (nicer decor, more inventive menu, higher quality food) for about the same price, it just doesn't measure up. The decor looks like a family-owned small town restaurant - a little shabby, it smells a little musty, the carpet is worn - but they try to sell "a dining experience" according to their menu, complete with "cocktails". My guests all ordered the fried chicken. It was pretty good. Mashed potatoes were good as well. For the sides, I had a salad, and the lettuce looked like it came out of a bag. Others had ordered green beans, they looked canned. The bread was undercooked and too soft in the middle. Overall, not a terrible experience, and what I expected from the food, but I felt the service, quality and decor did not measure up for a $20/plate meal.
