Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

My mom LOVES this place. She and my dad go here on a weekly basis, it's cute. I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food but when I'm in the mood and I want it done right, I want Los Aztecas. Admittedly, they are probably along the lines of most Mexican-run restaurants so it won't make your brain explode but it will leave you beyond stuffed and extremely satisfied. Their quesadillas are delicious, especially the ones stuffed with onions and peppers--it's huge! Their tacos, enchiladas and burritos are also awesome. My dad goes crazy for their mole sauce. In other words, if you go here expecting really good and fairly priced Mexican food, you won't leave disappointed.

My buddy and I enjoyed our meal at Los Aztecas. Solid Mexican food, very quick service, cheap Negro Modelo. My friends fish tacos were apparently very tasty, and the chicken flautas I had were better than average but not awe-inspiring.

Nothing special. The margarita was not great. Cute decor, that's all...wouldn't stop by again.

Good food at a reasonable prices. I had the fish taco the first time and they come with refried beans, rice and three fish tacos and they were very tasty. They also have tacos, 3 for around $5 and you have your choice of beef or chicken and they were very good. A couple of warnings, the hot sauce are very spicy and I loved them but make sure you just put a little bit first. The margaritas are delicious and strong and if you're driving, don't drink too many of them.

These is one of the best mexican restaurants in the dubuque area. Until las margaritas came to town. The food is always good, you get chips and salsa free, its a good time. Usually on friday and saturday nights they have a little 3 person band that comes around to the tables and take tips to play you whatever song you want to hear. They also accept pick up.

This place was recommended by many locals as the best place for Mexican food in Dubuque. After eating there we would agree! Excellent food and service. Large portions and very tasty. Would go again for sure!

I have eaten at Los Aztecas several times. Every time I have eaten there it has been great. Each time at the restaurant I tried a different dish and everything has been great. The portions are good and the service is quick.

Why anyone would go anywhere else for Mexican food in Dubuque is beyond me. The food is delicious and authentic. The service is very prompt, and there's almost never a wait. The free chips and salsa hold you over while you wait for dinner, which usually is less time than you'd expect for a place so busy (ask for mild salsa if you have an aversion to cilantro or peppers). And the margaritas are the best in town. My favorite dish is the Enchiladas Verdes with green salsa - fantastic! The place can be loud, but it's perfect for a casual meal or for families. My only complaint is that smoke from the smoking section often drifts into the non-smoking area.

Came here on Cinco de Mayo. You know it a busy day so why not be staffed for it. Sat at the bar and took 30 minutes to just get chips and salsa and had to ask three times for them. They didn't have a bar tender and the servers ignored the people at the bar. I eat Mexican every cinco de mayo as it is my birthday. I have seen places twice as busy have better service. Would not recommend.

I've lost track of how many times we've come here over the last two years. I wouldn't call it necessarily the most authentic Mexican I've eaten (or at least, not from the same parts of Mexico that I've been to / tend to migrate into Arizona and New Mexico), but it's the best Mexican I've had in Dubuque.

This is one of the worst Mexican restaurants I have ever been to. The service was bad even thought there was only a few tables with people. No one in my group liked there food. My meal should have come with sour cream and when it didn't come with it I asked for some. This took them 15 minutes to bring this so I was done eating by then. To make this worse they charged me for the sour cream that should have come with my meal to begin with. The food and service will just bad and I won't be back.

Not the greatest. Not exactly what I expected. I may just be too American though. I would go to Taco Bell over this. At least they have Mountain Dew baja blast.

Stopped at this restaurant on a Saturday night while in town for a basketball game. This was hands down the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. When you walk in, there is nobody to greet you at the door, so there are just a bunch of people standing around waiting for someone to get them a table. When an employee finally shows up, they just kind of looked around and said who's next? My husband requested a table for 5 plus a high chair. There were many open tables in the restaurant but we waited close to 10 minutes to get seated and were seated at a tall booth that did not allow a high chair! When we mentioned we need one of the low tables because of the high chair, the woman got annoyed and said it will be a few more minutes, so I said it's fine, we'll deal with the booth, minus the high chair. Our server was awful. Never introduced himself or even said hello, just asked what we wanted to drink with an attitude. The menus were dirty and somewhat difficult to read because the font color of the food was very light and the place was very dark. Our food was delivered and luke warm. I ordered a shrimp fajita and I'm sorry, but I've never been served a fajita on a hot plate that wasn't still sizzling! Nobody at our table had any good things to say about their food. Bland, tasteless, and honestly did not look fresh. Our plates with beans and rice had brown lettuce and runny sour cream served with it. Very unappetizing. Overall, the restaurant was not as clean as it should be (visible spider webs on the light fixtures), accumulated dust on the tops of the booths. Just makes me wonder what the kitchen looked like. Bad Service, Bad Food, and Dirty= Never Again!

Mas Chips! Oh yes, I didn't eat anything all day cause we decided we were going to go to Mexican food before our show at the Busted Lift! Usually we hit up a place downtown but we saw Los Aztecas on the horizon as we were coming into town from the west and we decided to go here! This is your stereotypical large Mexican restaurant with singing waiters for b-days, lots of traditional Mexican kitchy stuff on the walls, and big booths, with big baskets of chips brought to the table promptly! The salsa was fresh too, only problem was it was the only bowl we got. My friend ordered a burrito, and I got the Veggie Fajitas with no cheese and no sour cream to make them Vegan! I got a ton of food with mine, I really enjoyed the guac, salad, beans and rice. As for the veggies it was a nice mix of onions, red and green peppers. Mostly onions so my breath was on fire after the meal! It was a lot of food and even though I had no eaten all day I could not finish my meal! The service was good, and i walked out of there with a full belly for under 15 bucks with a 25% tip! Not to shabby!
(4)Stevo H.
Eh. Pretty bland and the lime marg was really syrupy. Definitely not fresh made, but they charge like it was.
(2)Scott F.
I'm giving them a 3.75 for a rating. I have eaten here many times in the past. It used to be my favorite place for Mexican. But in the last couple of years the taste has gotten blander, the portions smaller, and the margaritas weaker. It's ok Mexican food, but it's time for me to check out the other places in town.
(3)Megan B.
The food was great but the service was horrible!! It was a Friday night and my boyfriend and I thought we would just sit at the bar. We waited 10 minutes as waiters came behind the bar, looked at us and went on their way. Not even a "someone will be with you shortly". I finally had to go ask the hostess who said "we don't have a bartender, it's just whoever is back there." how do you not have a bartender on a Friday night? This is not the fault of the waiters, but of management on making a poor business and customer service decision.

I can't say that I've ever had anything at Los Aztecas that tasted great. Sub-par food. Do not order a margarita if they are not on special because they are far more expensive than those at comparable restaurants.
(2)Anne B.
Not impressed. I guess I've had better too often for too long. If you've got a palate that can't handle too much spice and doesn't mind a tinny canned taste with your salsa, you'll be happy. If you prefer fresh, authentic (yes, really authentic) Mexican, not going to happen here. Price-wise, I walked out of this place wishing I'd gone to Taco Johns and saved a ton of money. Not to insult the service or the atmosphere----that was good. Just the food was the epitomy of midwestern mediocre. I'm hoping that it was an off-night and that we ordered crappy dishes----but I'm thinking not---my husband had canned mushrooms smothering his chicken (apparently it was a house special dish? really?) Canned mushrooms belong in my grandmother's spaghetti----I remember picking them out. Anyhow....Maybe this place has great chips and drinks? But their food is blugh.
(2)Michael M.
Are you serious? The food was terrible and they got my order wrong twice! The food tasted spoiled and overcooked. Stay away and your bowels will thank you

Best Mexican in Dubuque!!
(5)Albert R.
Okay. Not great. Not bad. Just okay. I had the chimichangas. I'd order them again but I wouldn't make a trip to get them specifically.
(3)Ralph G.
Had the steak tacos. Better than I expected and it filled me up. Im from the Houston area so we know something about Mexican food in that town.
(4)Victor L.
The place was referred by the Hotel right next to it. Now I don't quite remember, but I believe you get a discount with your stay at that Hotel. I came here a couple of times. Food isn't all the good here, because they primarily use ground beef for anything. Actual beef with anything will cost you more than your average Mexican restaurant. Yet, their main hit here is half priced Margaritas Tuesday. It's so popular that it packs all the parking, including the Hotel's side as well. Food here isn't all that good, but the owner and his staff certainly are great... Great place for Margarita Tuesday's, around town.

Beware of using a coupon from Travel Dubuque. Manager claimed it was a Sunday only special when the coupon explicitly said "excusing Weds, Fri, and Sat." If you use the coupon (15%), cut on the dots and hope the same guy isn't there.

This is probably the most authentic mexican food you can find in Dubuque. The restaurant attempts to make the atmosphere feel like you're in Mexico with a ton of cultural paintings on the walls, hanging attire and hats, and mexican music playing throughout the restaurant. I think the food is delicious. However, I agree with Anne B, you have to make sure your palate can take spicy. Much of their sauces are already pre-made to be spicy, the salsa they serve can sometimes leave your mouth asking for water, and lastly, I think their pico de gallo is spicier than their salsa. If you like beef and cheese, I would recommend: quesadilla rojo with shredded beef (my favorite), or the beef fajitas, or combination #16 (1 beef taco, 1 beef burrito, rice and beans). Although, while there, the ONE thing I would RECOMMEND you getting is their HORCHATA! It's a drink made with rice, water, sugar, and cinnamon. I believe that Los Aztecas makes the best horchata anywhere. It has just the right amount of sugar and cinnamon that screams "yum" in your mouth. As for a few negatives, I noticed that then the waiters do not write down my orders (since the majority of the time I substitute the beans for just more mexican rice), they always seem to get my order wrong. And I found 2 tiny pieces of rocks in my rice today... :(

I gotta admit Mexican and Dubuque aren't exactly two things I thought would go together but I was pleasantly surprised. The Margaritas are tasty and you can't beat a 20oz for $5.99 or kids eat free w/ purchase of adult meal! The food was pretty darn good. I had the combo platter with enchiladas and tacos. I enjoyed it so much for dinner I returned the next day.

Pretty darn good food. Nice decor. Our server was rude.

After moving to Minneapolis, I was still singing the praises of Los Aztecas. It seemed kind of ridiculous, as there was quite a population of authentic Mexican restaurants to be found, yet I was dreaming of a restaurant back in Iowa. So most of the times when I head back to Dubuque, I want to go to Los Aztecas just to reaffirm in my head whether or not I was just romanticizing the place or if it truly does destroy nearly every authentic place I've visited in the Cities. Bottom line? Destroy is right. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty on Los Aztecas' menu that is not authentic. However, the important point to make is that it's all delicious. I have yet to find one thing that I haven't loved, even though I usually order the Mazatlan or some other seafood pile. The portions are ridiculously huge and the cheese may be a bit over generous, but that's midwestern influence for you. The tables come with a grip of hot sauces to spice things up. And that's not to mention their regular hot salsa that they divvy out free with their house-made tortilla chips. There is delicious at every turn. I might continue to get that "pffft, Iowan" look whenever I mention my affection for Los Aztecas when I'm back north, but whatever. Pffft all you want, you're not getting any of my crab quesadilla and you should be heartbroken about that.

Los Aztecas on Dodge is not great. Service is very slow and waiters seem to spend more time standing around talking. With that being said, why can't anyone in Dubuque make a good Carne Asada! Los Aztecas on Dodge is the worst. I have a great set of teeth but it was like trying to take a bite of shoe leather. Once I managed to get a bite down the meat was bland. Not good. Other food is just ok, not memorable. Go to Fiesta Cancun instead.

We visited Dubuque this past weekend. I read the reviews of Los Aztecas, and decided to go because the reviews seemed more positive than negative. The decor was okay, the restaurant was clean, and the food was... average. However, our server was TERRIBLE! We were seated, and he rudely asked if we were ready. I asked for a few more minutes to finish reading the menu (I wanted to stay away from any entree that had "nacho cheese sauce" on it). He finally returned to take our food order, bring our drinks, and that is the last we ever saw him. We waited at least 30 minutes after finishing our meal before I flagged down a busboy to ask for a to-go container (not sure why I bothered) and then we had to go to the front counter to ask for our check. I have never stiffed a server before, but his rudeness and disappearing act really grated on me. I will never return to Los Aztecas- the food wasn't that great and the service was awful.

Great service, good food, good margaritas. Went on a Friday night and it was busy but no waiting. Lacking a delicious hot salsa - their spiciest was more of a chipotle salsa than a traditional hot sauce.
