This is a quintessential classic humble Midwest steakhouse. The proper thing to wear is a truck. A Prius would be completely inappropriate. If I had a visitor in the area from out of the country I would bring them here. It's offers more than a great hand-carved steak, it's a cultural experience. Doon is a really small orderly Iowa town. There is no curb and gutter in most of the town, but there are families, solid rural businesses and several churches. The steakhouse is regionally well known. Friday and Saturday nights are extremely busy. The decor is not ornamental nor even oriented around a particular theme. Here the draw is the meat. The dinners come with bowl of beef barley soup (delicious), a simple side salad, a dinner roll, and a plate with carrots, celery and pickles, and choice of potato (fries, steakhouse fries, broasted wedges, baked potato, or homemade hashbrowns). Right now I am just enjoying the afterglow of having enjoyed a great steak. There is much more that I could write, but instead I'll end by saying - just go, you won't regret it.

Just a real good down-home kind of place with affordable prices and great meats. We went in as a party of six and were seated promptly at about 8:30 on a Thursday night. It looked like we had just missed the rush. Most everyone ordered iced tea, which was cheap (and quickly refilled as the night went on). We did get the cheese balls as an appetizer - they were great - but with the amount of food you get as part of your meal, it was wholly unneeded. I ordered the hamburger steak, which if I recall was 14 or 16 oz., and it came with a soup, a salad, a dinner roll, pickle tray, and a side. I got the hashbrown potatoes with onion and cheese on top. The soup was delicious, and the salad was a generous portion, but just lettuce and cheese (which was fine - it reminded me of the top of a Taco Bell taco, and that was OK by me!). The meat was very juicy and lightly seasoned - delicious. The potatoes were also very good - no complaints about any of it. Four others at the table got the prime rib sandwich special, which was only $7 I believe and also came with salad and a side of baked potato. The roll for it was perfect and the meat was tasty, though it wasn't packed with meat (others have said in the past it was overflowing with meat, so it may have just been the end of the night and they were running low - but either way, it was so cheap it's hard to complain!). The final person got the prime rib dinner, and it looked fantastic. We were too full at the end to have any dessert. If you're in Doon or Rock Rapids or the nearby area, make this steak house a stop on your trip. You won't regret it!
