Emily has changed the menu and three out of our party of four gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up. Of course the pizza is still great said the friend who ordered. I had the ¨Italian Stallion¨ burger with grilled asparagus, nice having something beside French fries as a side. The grill eggplant salad was reported as excellent. The only sour note was the friend who ordered the Italian grinder, she thought it was bland.

I grew up going to Chucks occassionally, and have been a fan for a long time. But the last few times I've been there have been disappointing. Not sure if it's the change in ownership, or maybe it's that I've grown up and know what real authentic Italian food tastes like. If you go here, stick with onion rings and pizza- both are very good. The pasta dishes seem to be overloaded with a tasteless sauce, and my chicken parm tasted as though several shortcuts were made (including the cheap looking shredded three-cheese blend it was topped with). Very unimpressed, especially considering the price. A few other things: -Our waitress was new, so I tried to give her a break, but she was really bad. She charged my friend for an entire bottle of wine when only one glass was ordered, and seemed very uncomfortable throughout the meal. -The booths are very old and pretty uncomfortable. -The Highland Park location isn't great. I usually end up having to park in the dimly lit lot across the street, and don't feel entirely safe walking across by myself. Between the sub par food and not feeling safe entering/leaving there at night, I think it's time to part ways with my beloved chucks. After all, there are lots of places with good onion rings and pizza.

I have always been a big fan of Chuck's pizza, and now that the new owner has taken over she has improved on something already great and she continues to improve things night after night. I love the pizza, it's the best thin crust pizza in town. I also like the sausage sandwich, the tenderloin sandwich, and of course the onion rings.

As good of pizza in Des Moines you will get. Also very good onion rings too. Emily the owner is a always there.

Since the change in ownership, I would definitely say that the quality of their pizza has grown. It is amazing thin crust pizza with just the right amount of delicious red pizza sauce. Hot wings and onion rings are good too! Everything else is pretty much just blah. Seems to me a lot of it is overpriced. And last time I was in the restaurant it smelled like the pet store next door.

Getting our meal was SLOW!! Waited over an hour to get our pizza. What we had was ok, but not worth the wait. The live music was a nice touch.

Our second trip to Chuck's was try the pizza because the other food was disappointing. Well, the pizza was disappointing, too. Thin flimsy crust, sauce had a strong tomato flavor but not much else, and toppings were bland. I've had better frozen pizzas. :( I still love their garlic cheese bread. Cheesy and buttery.

Chuck's is good, homestyle Italian, and it's been around forever. We love going every time we're in Iowa. The onion rings are a must - really thin and crispy. though the last visit they were dry and tasted like they hadn't been seasoned. I'm hoping it was a one-time situation. I get the same thing every time - eggplant parm, and it never disappoints. Basically, if you like Italian food, you should eat here. You'll get a good, hardy meal, and support an institution!

What can you say! I havent been here since new management, but if its anything like before i would recommend that you stop and fill your tum tums. I especially loved the pizza, always had the perfect amount of meat and sauce to it. Plus its not too expensive. Well worth the money!!

Love their pizza and onion rings! It's a classic Des Moines location and I really like the tomato sauce they use. It has some zest to it and isn't a bland sauce like I've run into in other restaurants. Service can be sketchy when they are busy. One word of caution...get a seat at a table. :) The booths look comfortable, but the cushions and springs are shot in most of them. You'll sink down until the table is almost at your chin. ;) It makes it easy to shove pizza in your face, but it's not the most comfortable seat in the world.

Chucks has great, super thin crust pizza at a price that is amazing when compared to trendier pizza spots in town. Also try their handmade onion rings and cheese sticks.

After the recent blizzard, cabin fever got the best of us and Chuck's was the only place open. A big thumbs up for the effort during a raging snow storm! Definately an old school, family owned place in need of a remodel...then again, the current decor is part of the overall experience. More of a neighborhood pizza place, Chucks also serves chicken, steak, pasta and sandwiches. Tonight, we had salad, pizza and a beer. The salad is brought to you (what a concept) and was fresh and crisp. The bread and home made breadsticks were perfect. Our mushroom pizza was piping hot and tasty. No complaints on a cold winter night. Service was excellent. It's not a fancy place, it's a bit run down...but if you want to go to a Des Moines, family dining institution, Chucks is it.

A very good home cooked meal. Its kind of out of the way so you have to plan to be there. The thin crust pizza is cooked to perfection and, the Italian fare is quite good. I can't say anything negative.

In a city that knows good Italian food this quiet little restaurant is a hidden gem in the Highland Park/Oak Park neighborhood for more than 50 years. When you see the pizza makers tossing dough in the front window and the friendly bar inside, you'll know this a special place that time has passed by. To some outsiders who were weened on chain restaurants, they might not get it. But Chuck's was THE pizza place of my youth, the standard that all other pizzas would be judged. The very thin, brick oven-type pizza is their specialty. The fresh, tomato-y sauce is awesome and the Italian sausage has just the right spiciness. If your arteries can handle it, get an order of homemade onion rings. Other Italian items on the menu worth trying are the lasagna - one the best you'll ever have - and the Italian fried chicken. Stop in the bar while you're waiting for a table and get one of their signature frosty mugs of beer. Say hi to Linda the owner as she whizzes by doing a thousand things at once. She has kept up the great tradition that her father started and has a heart of gold. Come with an open mind and a hungry belly, you'll be in for a memorable experience.

Two of us ordered garlic cheese bread, side salads and a pizza. The food was very good! Service was impeccable. We watched the food delivered to the tables around us and are excited to go back and try some of their other dishes. Definitely old-fashioned menu with huge portions. This place looks like it was opened in the 1950s and has not been updated since, which really adds to its charm, in my opinion.

Great onion rings and thin style pizza. I've been about 10 times and never ordered anything except pizza. The service is decent. The prices are excellent for what you get.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
