We had dinner here on 24 April 2015. Delicious fresh food, good value, nice variety, friendly service. We ordered some of their vegetarian options.

Pie. Yum. Didn't try the prime rib. Probably should have. The pork chop was a little underdone. Drinks are various, generous and hilarious. A great list of funny Midwestern wine mixes. The only thing I have against the place is finding it! Try to get directions from a local and it's "go up the hill, go down the hill, turn left and left and left". Which is pretty much spot on but still very confusing. "Just behind the Super 8" is a little easier but it's still very much tucked away.

We're in Decorah a number of times every year and have frequently enjoyed the Stone Hearth Inn. It's conveniently situated directly behind the Super 8 and just down the road from Country Inns. The menu is basic American but the prime rib and burgers are very good and reasonably priced. A local brewery with very good product, Toppling Goliath, is available. We loved the Gold Nugget!! The staff is great and gracious and very accommodating. On this trip, we ate dinner here twice in two days. I had the prime rib dinner both days and was very happy with it! Laurie had the prime rib the first night and share fettuccine with chicken and mushrooms with our grand-daughter the second night. Our grand-daughter, 3, took a sudden turn and was acting up and wanting to leave. The staff did their best to placate her but in the end, were very gracious about packing everything to go. Back at the hotel, the feisty grand-daughter loved the fettuccine and prime rib and wanted more!

Cozy dining room and a sports bar.. Nice menu and great food! Friday night fish fry and Toppling Goliath on tap.. What more can you ask for?

A large group of friends and I were in Decorah for a memorial service. We stayed at the Super 8 right by the Stone Hearth. By the end of the day we were all tired and hungry and figured we would check this place out since it was so close. First of all, this complaint is not about the food. The food was great and the prices weren't too bad either. The complaint is about the service. It was awful. We entered the restaurant and were greeted by the hostess. We told her we had a group of 13 people and immediately she responded by shaking her head and telling us "no!" She then proceeded to tell us that she did not have the wait staff available to serve a table of 13 and it was too big. We offered to split our group up and sit in different sections if it would help. She appeared to be very frazzled, appeared to ignore our suggestion, and walked away. Eventually the bar tender came up to us and said the main problem was there wasn't enough room for a table to accommodate 13 people, but if we were really willing to split up our party they could do that. We agreed and tables were set. Our group took our seats and each table had a different server. The second group loved their server, my group did not. She was very unfriendly, did not greet us, and pretty much ignored us after our orders were taken. Drinks were not refilled, etc. One of my friends asked for Jameson and she informed us that while they had many types of whiskey, Jameson was not one of them. The thing is, we could see the bottle on the bar, but she was adamant that they did not have it. Later, he asked for it again and it miraculously appeared at the bar I guess. She could not remember who ordered what meal at all and was prepared to just hand us food and let us figure it out. It was not until the bartender (I believe) pretty much told her to get her act together that she became friendly and helpful. By then our meals were almost over and the damage was done. The hostess continued to be rude to people, and not just in our group. A group of 6 walked in and asked for a table. The were abruptly told that the restaurant was busy and they would have to wait however long it took to get their food. They were really not that busy. There was our group of 13, another group of 6, and two tables with 2 people at them. The rest of the place was empty. Later, while waiting for the bathroom I was approached and told by the hostess there was another bathroom in the basement, but the area was closed so I couldn't use it. Ummmm...ok geez thanks, that was helpful. Our group also witnessed what appeared to be a meltdown by the hostess a little bit later on. She kept running in and out of the kitchen area, holding her head in her hands, taking deep breaths, shaking her head, and practically crying. All of this in a very clear public view. So over all the food was good, but the service and treatment of customers was terrible!!! Not sure if this is the norm or just an off night, but it was enough for our group to say we will never be back! Ever!

Great thanksgiving dinner - all homemade and the pumpkin bars were to die for! Cozy, pleasant seating area, great for families.

A nice restaurant with reasonable prices. Staff was very friendly and the food cooked as expected. Some menu items have a unique name which makes it fun and makes you want to read the whole menu, not just stop where you see what you want. This is how I wound up with a Bratwurst covered in sauerkraut and mozzarella cheese. It was awesome! What a great find. We ill be coming here again and again when we are visiting my daughter at Luther College.
