Petra Falafel House Menu

The food was definitely above average. I tried several things and was pleased with everything. I agree with a previous poster who stated that they didn't like have to pick out everything I wanted on my pita though. I found it to be a little overwhelming. I might get used to if I continued to go back and further acquainted myself with the menu. I don't know if this will happen though as I found the decor very off-putting. As another previous poster said, the tables are either too low or the chairs too high as they leave very little leg room. There was little to no decorations in the place and one wall had two huge flat screen televisions blaring away. This may be what the current sport bar visiting patron wants but I find it far from classy. I had to sit at the back of the restaurant to get away from the deafening sports news that was emanating from them which put me near the rest rooms. This then put me in a world of odors that just about ruined my meal. If I do choose to go back, I will definitely be getting my meal to go.

Staying at the hotel next door and stumbled upon this gem in search of substance after a long day on the road. Got a chicken schwarma platter with enough food for two people to easily share for only ten bucks. To top it off the staff was friendly and food was divine!

I was so worried when I moved here that I would only have chain restaurants to choose from when eating out. I'm so glad I worried for nothing! Petra Falafel definitely satisfies my craving for Mediterranean cuisine. I ordered the chicken shawerma combo that came with fries and a drink. Plenty of food. Enough to take leftovers home. It was so tasty that my mouth now waters every time I drive by Petra. The music stations (in arabic?) on the televisions are a bit loud, but definitely entertaining and appropriate considering the menu.

Great food. Great Prices. This place is way better than Pita Pit. No comparison. Food is fresh. I had the Falafel Platter and it is enough to feed three people. Best Falafel in town...seriously.

Great food and plenty of it. The wait can be a little long when they are busy. The food itself is well worth the wait. During lunch they serve a pea soup that you get no matter what you order even if your getting food to-go. Good food and plenty of it the portions well satisfy most.

I had takeout from here last night and it was good. Definitely will be coming back. We had the gyro platter and lamb Shawerma. Both were good, rice was flavored nicely, hummus was pretty good too. The only thing I didn't like was the pita bread. It got hard and stale quickly when it wasn't warm. But honestly the rest of the food filled me up so I didn't feel like I was missing anything. Definitely 4 stars for takeout/quick dining food!

I've been coming here pretty often and now feel comfortable enough to leave a review. Good food, consistent quality in my experience. A bit on the pricey side and a bit slow, but the staff is friendly and the food is good. Delivery is also an option which is nice in a pinch. The falafel isn't the best but enjoyable. What I do like is that the pita sandwiches don't skimp on the meat. As a young adult with a healthy appetite, this is very much appreciated and noticed! Solid place.

It's my first time here and I tried the lamb gyro combo. The combo comes with fries, drink and complimentary soup. It's a steal of a deal at $6.49! The gyro was even better than I expected. I will definitely put this restaurant on my go to list for a casual meal. Friendly staff, ask them for help ordering of you need it, they were happy to give suggestions.

Excellent and fast. Perfect carryout. I had the chicken shawerma pita with everything and veggie dolmah. Very easy to order online through yelp and ready when you get there. Will definitely be back. Can't believe I just discovered this place! If you like Mediterranean, you must try.

Decent food, terrible service. Don't order delivery, make the trip. Ordered at 3:45 pm and received it at 5:30pm on a Friday afternoon. Called an hour later to ask about the status, told me 10 minutes, 10 minutes. Called 30 minutes later, they told me it had just left, how long had it been sitting?! Food gets here, the sheepish delivery driver wouldn't look me in the eye or acknowledge their 1:45 delivery time for a damn falafel with a sorry for the wait. NOTE TO OWNERS: Don't be ass holes, learn some customer service, then accept responsibility, regardless of your control of the situation. Honestly should have made the trip in to try their dry and drippy falafel. The Baklava is the only reason they get a star. Maybe I won't partially tip ahead of time when I can't make the trip in, if I even decide to eat at this particular falafel house. Think twice before ordering online here. Something goes wrong, it's probably your fault for not ordering enough.

If first impressions mean anything then we'll there you go. Thursday five pm and there was no ice in the pop machine and they couldn't give back change from a twenty without taking ones from the tip jar. The air conditioning was on but it felt muggy. Parking spots are narrow along this strip. People were super helpful and friendly. Drink was included with the meal. Plenty of cultures represented by the clientele. That speaks large if you want good authentic food. Dumped my pop after.five minutes and got another round. Still no ice. Bummer. Maybe I should have asked for water.but the food. Wow. Chicken was chopped and full of flavor. Best humus ever. Chicken on a bed of rice. Two types of humus and great pest bread too.Super nice people. But still no ice. Time to refill.

ORDERED: Falafel Pita $4.99, made combo $1.50, Baklava $1.50 (all to go) SERVICE: Nice folks but SLOW. Stuck in Iowa time. If I worked in Iowa City I'd fear they'd wreck my hour lunch. No real sense of urgency among staff. TASTED: I hit the road and started with the jasmine rice. Really good with a touch of heat. The falafel was conveniently wrapped in foil and easy to eat while driving. The taste was strange - first time I've had pickles in falafel. I believe Petra uses tahini instead of tzatziki sauce making the entire dish bitter (parsley, pickles, garbanzo beans will do that). Disappointing falafel. The baklava was dry and my clue should have been when I watched them serve it from a grocery store bakery box. ODDS OF RETURN: 4/10

I order online from Petra on occasion and they always deliver food in a timely manner, and it's always really tasty. I've sampled a little of everything and I am really impressed by their lamb shank. They include rice and salad with their meals, and I usually request hummus. I love Mediterranean food, and Petra brings excellent food with a lot of heart. The manager recognized me by my address once and checked in with me to see if the service and food were up to snuff, I really appreciated that.

Very good, authentic Mediterranean food with great prices given the large portions. The restaurant itself is a bit drab, but the service is fair. Luckily, on some evenings they provide delivery!

Great food and great service! First of all, it says a lot about the restaurant when you have cultured people creating and serving your authentic (as can be) food. I've eaten here a few times in house and every time, no matter if you order a sandwich or an entree, they begin your meal with a complimentary lentil soup. The serving sizes are very... American! More than you expect for the prices! (Cheapest sandwich is $4.99 [and its huge], and most expensive combo and item on menu is $11.49!) Into specifics- The chicken shawerma platter and sandwich were absolutely delcious! It's a curry spice mixture I've ever had around IC and I've lived here for 10 years, always interested in cultural/spiced up food. The gyro is served with a heaping amount of meat for the price ($5) which is rare around here too. The only complaint I had was the beef in the beef tekka was over cooked. All in all, this place deserves more recognition for their outstanding food and very reasonable prices! My most recommended for Mediterranean food in town! I plan on eating here at least every month or two to get my Mediterranean fill and to try the rest of the menu!

This is the most Americanize Mediterranean food I've ever had. I got the basic falafel Pita and french fries. I had not intended to get the french fries but it came as a combo. I do think the french fries are good however I rarely have met a french fry I didn't like. I didn't care for the soggy pre-dressed lettuce and the falafel balls were not crisp enough in my opinion. Also I never tasted any hummus. The woman who took my order was kind. Wouldn't recommend.

Great beef Shawerma! Staff is incredibly friendly. Clean, open layout conveniently near a mediterranean market. Arabic music videos play which makes eating here a more authentic experience. For 6.88 you get fries, a drink, and shawerma. Not too bad on occasion. The falafel is very authentic and donut shaped- a different flavor compared to more pedestrian falafel restaurants. Petra is definitely worth your visit.

  • Alain G.

Food is fair. The chicken somewhat tuff and maybe precooked therefore lacking in that sizzling freshness associated with grilled or sautéed fresh meat. The babaganoush was sour and maybe that is the way this middle eastern place prefers it. So I won't be returning.

Tried Petra on the way home from work and they did not disappoint. The petra combo was a shmorgasborg of mediteranean delights that left us with major leftovers. The side of feta salad, babba ganoush and hummus were delicious, amazing and delightful in no particular order! We got containers of all three that left us with plenty for the week. The falafel was very good and the Gyro we had was some of the best we've had in a while. It was less expensive than Oasis and about 95% as good. Hummus and babba ganoush were equally as good as any where in town, falafel is a close second because of the size and the only differentiating factor between Gyros is that Oasis puts falafel in the Gyro. Feta salad was really good and the package came with fries and a drink for about $15. Great spot that's on the coralville strip, easy to get to and with lots more parking than Oasis. Definitely worth trying and better than anyone else if you want leftovers!

Food is really good and worthed for the money. Not too expensive. But they are kind of slow. If you don't mind waiting too long good place

Today's lunch of cold soup, flavorless salad with non descript salad dressing??? And a falafel pita that had a metal staple in it!!!....I will never be back.

Most important, very few of Zabiha options in iowa city. Pricing is on higher side. Their chicken tikka and shawarma are good but quality and taste is inconsistent . Some days you love the dish , next time completely flavor less and uncooked. But their positives are far more than negatives. Excellent humus.

  • Deva C.

I love their food!!! Everything I've tried is delicious. They have this lentil soup that is complementary & so yummy! I wish they would sell it by the bowl, although I've never asked. I look forward to trying something new each time.

Great Gyro, Kabob, and entrees! Big portion sizes, great deal! Perfect for lunch and dinner! Everything tastes amazing every time. We went in and were greeted immediately, very nice service! DIdn't have to wait long until food arrived, everything was hot and delicious! We keep going back and have not been disappointed yet!

Had the Lamb Shawerma sandwich and boy did it take me back to the month I spent in the Middle east. While a tad saltier than I remember, the sandwich was fresh and really flavorful. MUCH better than any gyro. The Falafel bar looked incredible, so I'll be back to try that next time.

Nice location, friendly staff, good food. Serving size is fair to reasonable. Price is reasonable to good. One thing that dives me nuts about this place is the fact that they ask you what items from a myriad of options you want on your sandwhich. Why not just make it the best way and let people request to add/remove items. You can't go wrong with this place. I also like Alibaba, and one of the previous cooks works here now.

I really wish I could rate this place higher but they just didn't do that well. I almost typed the word burrito - a Freudian slip. The falafel sandwich I got was wrapped up in a burrito fashion in a very chewy bread product. The bread had a strange consistency like one of those fast food Mexican tortillas that they smash in front of you. I tasted what seemed like pieces of dill pickle in my falafel sandwich and didn't care for that part too much. In comparison to Oasis, it didn't seem like there was much food in this sandwich. The falafel itself was fresh and it was okay but for the money, I did not feel the sandwich was worth the price. I sure wish they had a condiments bar like the competition. That might have gotten them another star. It almost seems overly generous to say this place is three stars but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Will I be going back? Not likely, to tell you the truth. One thing they NEED to do something about is the #&%$ furniture. As a good sized guy, I was irritated that the chairs are so high (or the tables so low) that you can barely get your legs under the table - then you have to hunch over. That's unacceptable and needs to be addressed. Give this place a try at least. It's not my favorite but it's okay.

When they forgot some our items in our delivery order, they told us we could drive and pick them up. Also, I don't know how they expected us to eat a huge tub of hummus and garlic sauce with no pita. The other food was fine.

This place is great for lunchtime falafel. Their falafel pitas have pickles on them, which I find to be a delightful touch. Their french fries are amazing. True, the furniture is a little awkward. Very high chairs and very low tables. There is also a uniquely scented plug-in air freshener. It's not a bad scent, but it is very strong. There are two large flat-screens that play music videos at an audible but not intrusive volume. Both times I've been here, the same woman was the only employee, and she was very friendly. A falafel pita combo (loaded whole pita, fries or rice, and a drink) is a little over $7. Petra has definitely entered my general rotation of decent places for a quick meal. Honestly, I think it's better than Oasis (and it knocks Pita Pit out of the park).

I've gone to the Petra Falafel house in the Coralville mall about 3 times now. Wonderful every time, it tastes authentic, love the salad and the rice is amazing! Also the chicken is great. What can I say...it was so yummy and I loved the huge portion they gave me. This is my go to place to eat whenever I go to the mall now :)

At first walking in to this strip mall I was surprised on how clean and nicely set up it was. Open kitchen to see what's going on and all the toppings and fixins are open to see as well. Staff was friendly and talkative. Got a falafal pita and was decent. Fresh ingredients. It was rolled more like a burrito. Was missing the cabbage, 'extras' and sauces I like though. The whole size wasnt filling and thought it would be bigger and just more. Fries were the crinkle cuts and salted perfectly. Nice to-go bags too.

Don't go to the Mall location unless you want a healthy dosing of attitude and possible expired food from a highschool kid who somehow holds the title of "Manager". I have eaten here several times and always order the falafel pita and fries. The fries and falafel are usually great. The falafel however tasted pastey and sour this last time and when i mentioned it to the child behind the counter, he simply said "thats your opinion". Yep. When I tried to explain that I have ordered this several times and it tasted like it had gone bad, and suggested that he try it, he insisted that it was made fresh and it was just my opinion. I spent almost $8 on bad falafel stale pita that had the texture of cardboard, and overcooked fries (and didn't eat even half of it) and this kid offered me no apology, no professionalism, and lots of I don't give a f@*# attitude.

Probably some of the friendliest food service employees in Coralville. A bit expensive, but the food is tasty.

Good falafel and kabobs here. It also is much cleaner than the other falafel/kabob places around us. I will be eating my middle eastern food here for certain.

Annoyed. Who charges extra for hot sauce? They never did before. Should ask patrons to pay last if that is the case. I was a frequent customer but because of this I will not go back.

My son and I stoped here for lunch today while making our way across Iowa. We received fast and friendly service. I had the Special #1 (gyros, fries, and soda) and my son had the Petra special -- falafel, fries, soda, bread, and three sides (hummus, babaganush, and dolmas). The food was great -- much better than our favorite local Mediterranean restaurants. The Special #1 was average in terms of value, but the amount of food in the Petra Special was outstanding. We had plenty to take with us for the trip home. This made for a very pleasant afternoon. Kudos to the Petra Falafel House!

My mother in law mentioned that this place has the best hummus and pita bread, so me and my husbeast decided to give it a try. We ordered the Falafel pita, a small side of tabouli, and six pieces of dolma. Since we are vegans, we ordered the falafel sans tzatziki, and feta cheese. The dolmas were perfectly pickled, and slightly sweet. The falafel pita that I had differed from the ones I am use to getting back home, filled to the pita brim with garlicky, sizzling hot nuggets of ground chickpeas. This one was on mark however. The fixins were tossed in tahini and has a nice taste. Everything was tasty, but seriously do not order the tabouli. The tabouli had way more parsley in it than cous cous or bulgur wheat. The tabouli lacked that puckery lemony punch and tickling-your-tonsils minty flavor that I associate with tabouli. I would have labeled this more as a parsley salad rather than a salad whose recipes dictates that its main ingredient is a grain. Oh, and OWNER DUDE- Get a tip jar!

I really wanted to like this place, I really did. Like it, I did not. Right off the bat, their pricing is SHADY. They offered us menus when we walked in (They do have a huge whiteboard/menu behind the counter with NO pricing information on it) so they gave us paper menus with pricing. What was the HUGE problem: the prices on the inkjet printed menus they gave us were not right. We placed our order, and the counter guy rang us up and told us the total, which was about $10.00 more than it should have been. I immediately called this out, the manager has to get called over, and there's a hullabaloo about getting the price changed. There's this issue about how the owner wants higher prices on some things, and the vibe I got was that they really didn't want to give me the menu price. It's not like this was a one-off oddball menu floating around with the wrong price, it was from a huge pile of ink-jet printed off menus, that they gave us. Fine, I got my food at the price I more or less expected. But then the food.... :( we ordered two of the Lamb subs. The lamb was not fresh cooked, it came out of a cooler and was warmed up in some sort of lukewarm water bath, and the bread was 'nuked before our eyes. He then proceeded to put the meat in the subs. The first one got piled fairly high with meat, then out of the same pan, with no regard for even distribution between the subs, proceeded to put maybe a quarter of what went into the first sub into the next one. Really? I mean, really? The lamb was the most disappointing part of it all, flavorless and nasty, honestly I walked out of there feeling RIPPED-OFF. Probably the worst lamb I've ever eaten. And the bread had a weird doughy undercooked flavor to it. Also, we got fountain soda, and I know the distinct off flavour of old syrup. It was undrinkable. I've had a few bad dining experiences in my life, but I want my $21.00 back. Oh, and ppl are right, there are two tv's both blaring programming in two different non-English languages. One was on a channel from Dubai showing music videos, and the other one was airing a documentary which was in German. The tables are at a really weird height to the chairs too. But hey, at least it's clean in there.

This review is for the shop they opened up in Coral Ridge Mall, I'm just too lazy to create a new entry for a food-court restaurant. I've been battling a gyro addiction as of late and this place scratched the itch. I'm sick of everything else at the mall, so I got their Super Gyro. I don't know what was 'super' about it, but it was a heaping pile of gryo meat. The fries were just so-so. My bottom line? Definitely more interesting than Taco Bell, Subway, and Panda Express.

we had a pleasant experience eating at this place for the first time. the staff was super nice (all of them). pitas were amazingly affordable (not dirt cheap but very appropriate for what you get), and what we like about the most was the condiment/salad bar. you get to pick amongst their two dozen items ranging from tabouleh, mango curry, spiced onions to hummus and several salads. a few areas of awkwardness: either the chairs are too high, or the tables are too low. also, if you eat there, the suspicious lingering hint of the flood eventually goes away as you bite into your pita or sandwich.

Awesome lamb kebob, and great hummus. Spiced to perfection-- and friendly service with fun Arabic television in the background. Can't wait to go back again.

I had never tried anything with falafel before until yesterday. I stopped in out of curiousity while conducting some business in the area and was pleasantly surprised. The food was good. I'm not a big fan of cabbage and lettuce, but my Falafel Pita was loaded with it (I won't harp on them for being generous, I just don't like those particular vegetables). In addition to cabbage and lettuce, there were also tomatoes, cucumber, and strips of pickle. The hummus spread was very good and the falafel was fried just enough to be crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. I found the Jordanian television station amusing. I've been told that America's number one export is pop culture, and judging by what is broadcast on foreign television, it seems our culture has invaded every corner of the globe. Watching the advertisements, I saw everything from a Sesame Street-like children's show to soap opera's to some kind of an American Idol-type talent show. The service was good. The falafel was cooked fresh (it took a little while). Overall I was pleased and recommend this place.

Great place, the falafel is a little dry but the side dishes make up for that by being so flavorful. The staff are always friendly and seem genuinely happy to see you.

Pretty good falafel, good tabouleh. A half falafel isn't as satisfying, but is filling when you get a side, too. They're in the Coral Ridge Mall right now, too, which is a pretty good find for vegetarians.
