Just because it's a vegan cookie, doesn't mean it can't knock your socks off. Thoughts to self when purchasing a vegan cookie: "Oh, Brittany, you're so good - look at you making sacrifices of flavor for your health. 5 stars for you. Gold sticker." Little did I know I was about to consume one of the tastiest cookies I've ever encountered (it was the vegan chocolate chip cookie, in case you're wondering). Apparently traditional butter is not necessary to make a wicked tasty cookie. Not one, but two on-the-go visits during my 36 hour stay in Iowa City! How could I resist your fresh and healthy carry out options, friendly checkout crew and baked goods that left me drooling? Final notes: they have veggie spring rolls, pickled beets, kale salad, tofu curry salad and more in the deli section. Enjoy!

I love it here! Totally polar-opposite experience from my visits to the Iowa City location! Let's start with the wine, because a good food experience often starts and ends there anyway. The wine selection is organized by wine type (much less confusing than shopping by region in my opinion). Prices range from $8 bottles to $40, with a well-balanced selection of reds, whites, and several organic options. The bulk foods section is well-diversified but often tricky to find what you want... ahem, those elusive dark chocolate covered almonds. The bakery selection is spectacular, while the produce and grocery sections are average. My only gripe is the selection of local products. It'd be great if the buyer focused more on sourcing some local options for things like kombucha, hand soaps, candles, wine, beer, bread, essential oils, simple syrups, etc.

I've been a vegan for a year and while this place sells a lot of dry goods and refrigerated items that I can get at various locations in the Quad Cities, I tend to come here for 3 things: Coffee (Just Coffee Co-Op), baked goods and bulk chocolate chips. I'm writing this review for one reason only. This place has the best fresh-baked treats I've had in the past year. I've tried cupcakes at a couple places near here, and they always fall flat. I've gotten slices of vegan cake when we visit Whole Foods in the Chicago area. Could be better. But the slices of cake at New Pioneer. Oh my. This is a big deal for me. I'm not much of a cook and my recipes tend to fall short, so I'm always searching for the perfect vegan version of the foods I love. I feel like I've finally found the cake I've been looking for. If they can start making donuts, my life would be complete. This place is great, I love supporting local businesses and I love buying things that are locally sourced. I don't mind the hour drive and now that I've had this cake, I might be coming by more often.

My birthday is not complete unless I make the pilgrimage here for a coconut cake. In fact I dream of it all year long.

A friend and I were lured here by her memory of a fruit tart that she had recently purchased here. Alas they were sold out. I did unearth a great lavender essential oil in a roll on form, blueberry-lavender dark chocolate, & a great yoga mag. I also love their Iowa City location though they have non existent parking. Iowa needs more stores like this. Tip: We did not find a specific product we were looking for but they carried some of the brands products so they offered to special order it.

Best locally grown grocery store in town. They sell mostly locally produced items. Great deli and bread/dessert section. Excellent wine and beer selections too. For people back home, it's like Berkeley Bowl and Beehive Market all rolled into one. Great place. We will be back.

They've got really good cinnamon rolls and awesome carrot cake. There ends what I can actually afford, but I guess that's okay. Oddly though, I noticed that cheese is a lot cheaper here than at Hy-vee. Maybe it was a typo, but Maytag blue costs almost twice as much at Hy-vee. Though I don't really buy into the whole organic food thing, but I must admit it is a nice place to shop since they priced all of the poor people out. And that is really why people shop here, right?

What can I say that hasn't been said? New Pioneer Co-op is wonderful if you find yourself over shopping at national/regional grocer's peddling their processed toxic waste, masquerading as food. Just a perfect fit for the Iowa City and Coralville community as well. Trust me, you can live without Whole Foods. I speak from experience having recently relocated to the Quad Cities from an East Coast city populated with any number of WF, Trader Joe's, etc. New Pioneer is an hour shot by car west across miles of Iowa cornfields from my current abode and I visit every chance I get. Sure, New Pioneer is a bit spendy if you typically grocery shop at Fareway, Hy-Vee or Walmart, but what is your physical and mental well being worth? Eating clean can be truly transformative, so drop a little more $ now if you have the means instead of paying the medicos later. If you are not growing or raising it yourself, get it at the Co-op.

I really enjoy New Pioneer. I wish everyone in Eastern Iowa could take advantage of what they have to offer; it's really something awesome! The store is well laid out, easy to shop, well-stocked and there's always enough staff on hand should you have any questions. I could go on for hours about the meat, seafood, baked goods, adult beverages, bulk items, produce and more, but you really should see it for yourself. I live in NW Chicago now and we have something similar to NPFC, but it just isn't the same! Do yourselves a favor and give this place a try. :) 4/5 because items could be a little more expensive than you'd ideally like to pay, non-member fees apply, too.

I'm not from around here so I didn't have a membership which made EVERY ITEM have a 5% surcharge. Luckily I could expense this since I was on a work trip. The items are very pricy. Not a huge selection of items like fruits and veg but they do sell things you can't find at normal grocery stores. Similar to a trader joes or a small whole foods. Only got warm fuzzes because supporting local farmers on some of the products. Wish eating organic could be cheaper. Often feel makers price gouge the people who try to eat well. Oh well. Nice place, bring $$$$.

I'll start with the fact that I'm not an organic food dude. I really like this place because they've got nice people, good selections of wine/beer, cheese, breads and some great meats. You pay extra for many of the products and if you're down with the organic stuff - more power to ya. There is a 5% additional charge for those that are not members. Membership cost $60 and the co-op will buy back your "share" if you ever want to sell it. Overall a great place to have in the area, if you're someone who only buys organic, or if you're just looking for some good cheese to go with dinner. It's worth stopping in and checking out.

After a 3 hour delayed flight and driving for an hour New Pioneer was exactly what I was looking for. I like to eat healthy and was dreading my eating choices at 8:00 at night in Coralville. I stopped in and got a very tasty fresh made sandwich as well as an amazing looking chocolate bar. I didn't get anything else, but I would recommend their made to order foods.

This is what customer service should be--friendly, helpful, even gregarious. I have never encountered an unfriendly person working here, and what's more, they know their stuff. Ask them about supplements, gluten-free products, which type of coconut oil is best--chances are they will know the answer. The ambience of the Co-Op is also a welcome change from the run-of-the-mill grocery store that hits you with fluorescent lighting and a feeling of dread from the very moment you pass through over the threshold--by comparison, this place is as cool, quiet, and comfortable as a dorm study lounge on a Thursday evening. Here you'll discover a healthier version of most items you'd find at the average Kroger, and to top it off, their bakery and lunch offerings are some of the healthiest and best tasting options in the area (try the Irish cake or their scones). Sure, the prices here are a little high, but you know that old saying "you get what you pay for"? Commit it to memory, embrace the concept, say "au revoir" to Chef Boyardee, and then head to the Pioneer Co-Op for some real food. You won't be sorry.

I used to live two blocks from here and visited near daily; the prepared foods are amazing, and the produce is insane, but what's really impressive is the freshly baked bread and crazy wild assortment of cheeses. The purple haze is my favorite, but their "sample" sizes (for $1-$3 each) let you try new varieties. The marbled rye was the best thing about my Iowa City mornings--hated moving away!

I'm not a health nut. In fact, I'm decidedly the opposite. I have been getting sick a lot lately, though. I suspect it is a food allergy. When you're trying to work through elimination dieting, a place like this is clutch, though. You'll be able to find dairy free, gluten free, and most other kinds of allergy friendly stuff. There were a few pleasant surprises that I did not expect, though. The two biggest surprises were the bulk maple syrup and local honey. I grew up in New England. Since that's where maple syrup comes from, it costs about 20-25% of what it costs at grocery stores here. I'm sorry. I love maple syrup, but I can't spend $23 on a decent sized jug of it. New Pioneer helps to bridge that gap by selling it at a more reasonable price, and allowing you to buy it in smaller sizes. I don't eat a lot of honey, but the bulk honey at New Pioneer is way better than any other I have ever eaten. The reason we ended up trying New Pioneer is that we tried some of their prepared foods at a friend's house, and they were quite good. Also, they seem to have a solid selection of wine. I wasn't planning to buy any wine, which is why I didn't ask any questions of the guy who offered to help me. So I don't really know if they have employees who know wine, or if they just have a good buyer. The only reason that I didn't make this a five star review is that the prices didn't seem to be co-op prices. I will definitely be back. This is an excellent place.

Good Healthy store, small but full of awesome choices.

Good if you like snooty customers. The food selection is okay, but the prices aren't any better than anywhere else so depends mostly on your ability to deal with the BS.

This store is one of my favorite places to go grocery shopping- it is closer to where I live rather than the one downtown, and the employees seem friendlier. Like most specialty food stores, expect to pay a little more for items here as compared to some place like Hy-Vee. On some items, the pricing is competitive with a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. If you are a vegan/vegetarian, they have a nice frozen food section of Quron, Boca, Morningstar, and Field Roast. They also have primal strips vegan jerkey, which is a huge plus. Their dry goods section is plentiful, and they also carry some of the local businesses deli goods in the refrigerated section. Check out their diverse selection of cooking classes!

This Co-Op has pretty much everything you need. The fresh salsa and guacamole in the refrigerated section is really good! The quiche in the deli area is good, too! I'd like to try their beef. Clean. Parking is plentiful and convenient. I wish they had a store in the Quad Cities.

A great selection of organic products! This is where I do a lot of my grocery shopping as there is no Whole Foods in the area. The bakery is great here too! Don't forget to pick up some tiramisu before you go!

I'm amending my earlier review because I have tried their steak. Let some of that natural meat sizzle on the grill and you are going to have a great meal. Compliment it with some buttery, fresh bread from their bakery. The co-op's meat is so much more tender than the Hy-Vee Amana beef.

OK, look, it almost isn't fair of me to rate this store when I lived in Portland, Oregon, for nine years and Salt Lake City for 2 1/2. In those 11 1/2 years, I have had access to health food stores that made my jaw drop when I first stepped inside. Some of them rival Super Targets in size - no kidding. If I had never moved West, I would probably give this place 5 stars. But I did, so take this review with a grain of salt if you must. Hubby and I stopped here during our vacation to Iowa this summer. I was in desperate need of gluten-free bread after many days deprived of starchy carbs in the land where the mere mention of food allergies gets you a hostile glare from waitresses and eye rolls from people who think a gluten allergy is the latest "diet fad." (Don't get me started.) Anyway ... starchy carb deprivation is not a state you want to meet me in, especially when I am overcome by nostalgia for the home sweet home I left behind, reduced to emotional mush by tearful reunions with friends and family, recovering from a grueling round of kettlebell swings and burpees at the U of Iowa Rec Center, and last but certainly not least, suffering from a raging case of PMS. TMI? Maybe so, but you need the full picture here folks. So we stop into Pioneer for that gluten-free bread. I figure nobody here will bat an eye at food allergies. And I am right. They don't. But alas, the selection is pitiful. I am used to gluten-free baguettes, sourdough, Italian bread ... you name it. Here in Iowa? Not so much. The same crumbly, dry "hippie" breads of yesteryear that turn so many people off to gluten-free goods (which when done right can rival or defeat the "real deal" in any taste test, seriously). I did spy some gluten-free treats from the bakery, but I really just waned (NEEDED) the bread. Otherwise, I would have been all over that sugary goodness. BUT the selection of Kalona Supernaturals milk, cream and yogurt totally made up for the sad little gluten-free frozen section. I have serious dairy envy, folks. Out here in Mormon country (SLC), we can only get our hot little hands on the Kalona whole milk, so even just feasting my eyes on the wide selection at Pioneer made me happy. If the car weren't already packed to the brim with three rounds of Trader Joe's hoarding (Lincoln, Omaha, and West Des Moines, booyah!), I would have seriously considered packing a cooler full of that milky goodness! And I seriously regret not buying the maple cashew butter I saw there. Yum-o. I didn't get a chance to investigate every aisle, but I can tell Iowa has come a long way in access to health food. Were I to move back to Iowa City, this store could never meet all my hippie-dippie food needs. I suspect I would drain my food budget with mail order. That said, this store is enough to make Coralville/Iowa City "doable" for someone like me, who is used to a vast selection of organic/natural/hippie dippie/health nut foods. If you shop here regularly and have not tried Kalona Supernaturals grass-fed, non-homogenized milk, you are nuts. That is all.

I used to be a Wheatsfield co-op member back in Ames, but unfortunately had to cancel my membership when I relocated to Chicago. I loved the friendly faces, fresh produce, helpful staff, fresh deli food and baked goods, etc., that Wheatsfield had to offer. New Pioneer offers all of these things, except the prices are kind of a joke. I love co-ops and believe in their mission...however, I can't believe a co-op would tack on 5% non-member surcharge---New Pi does!
