This place is one of the best Indian buffets that I have been too. They had a great selection, including pani puri. I am used to being disappointed by buffets that make their food bland to cater to the inexperienced pallet, but Namaste did not disappoint at all. The food was very tasty, the mango lasse's were very good, and the grocery next door was convenient and has a lot of things I haven't been able to find at other international groceries. I am so excited to have discovered this place!

From the moment we pulled up you could smell the wonderful aroma it smelled so good couldn't wait to get in the door and eat our waiter was very nice he greeted us at the door and sat us quickly he was very very friendly have to say one of the friendliest we have had in a long time he kept our drinks refilled and he talked to our children he asked them there names and when he came to the table for refills he called them by name it was great on to the food it is the best in Iowa that We have had we have had all of the other Indian places in des Moines and Ames and namaste blows all of them out of the water we didn't go during the buffet we went at dinner time and the portions are bigger than any of the other Indian restaurants in town we asked our waiter for more rice and he had no problem bringing us more and didn't charge for it we had the chicken tikka masala and the chicken Korma we got it spicy and it was very good it was spicy but not overly spicy where you couldn't eat it next time plan on getting it spicier we tried the plain, garlic, and chili naan all three were so good the chili one was definitely spicy but still tasted very good dipped in the sauce the atmosphere is not dark at all and they had tvs with Indian music videos playing on them so not a dark boring place like one other reviewer had mentioned this is definitely the only Indian place we will go to in Iowa the other places are not good there food is full of oil u can see it when they bring it to you but at namaste it was not oily at all just very good food

so i went on a Saturday for the buffet and it was good, its a little spicy and i can confirm that because i had 3 Indian friends dinning with me. you have to ask for nan and it is really good quality. after your meal if you have room left you should order a mango smoothie, its a tradition to have at the beginning but i like it at the en d to relax your stomach. there is also a grocery store that has lots of good supplies, dont feel shy, go buy something and step out of your typical Hyve comfort zone

Look, Des Moines is not blessed with great Indian food. It's a fact of life. Thai? Vietnamese? We do well. Indian, not so much. That said, Namaste offers the best buffet in town. It's often (gasp) spicy, they're generous with their paneer, and the naan is touched with buttery goodness. The grocery is great place to find things to experiment with at home, as well.

Far and away my favorite Indian food. This was the place where I first tried Indian food three years ago and I have loved the food and the service ever since. I have tried Indian food from other places around Des Moines, and even in bigger cities like San Fransisco and Louisville - no place can even compare! The only waiter who has ever been there recognizes us immediately every time, gives us a big smile and a friendly hello, and always knows what we like to order. My first love is malai kafta - a dish with cheesy vegetable balls smothered in a creamy, slightly sweet sauce. I pour a few large spoonfuls over a plate of their perfectly prepared basmati rice. So many spices and flavors play upon my palette. From the first bite, I was instantly hooked. A nice surprise in this dish is the golden raisin pieces that surprise you with a burst of sweet. I also like their chicken tikka masala. Chunks of fresh chicken, tender and juicy are covered in a creamy, bright red masala (sauce). The turmeric flavor comes through on this dish, adding a pleasing flavor complexity. When you take a bite of rice with the flavorful chicken and sauce, it's like a Bollywood dance break in your mouth! Add garlic naan to this and you're in heaven. Namaste carefully crafts their meals to create an authentic experience for its guests. From samosas with tamarind and mint chutney to their delicious entrees, and from their variety of naan to pair with your meal to the creamy, sweet cool of their mango lassi - Namaste has got it right! You will not be disappointed!

Are you terrified of Indian food? I used to be. Seriously terrified. I had no idea what to order and big screen TVs with Bollywood films intimidated me. Don't worry. Namaste and I have you covered. Walk into the restaurant and sit wherever you like. They don't care; the waitors are super friendly. Get a mango lassi, even if you're lactose intolerant, it's totally worth it. Then order the samosas to start (there's two - you can split them with a friend). Don't use the green sauce if you hate cilantro like I do; whatever the brown sauce is, it is heaven. Get the chicken tikka masala or chicken curry and order them medium spicy. Ask for a side of plain naan. When all of it comes to your table and you're wondering what I've just done to you, don't talk, just enjoy. But for god's sake, don't eat it all; you want enough for lunch tomorrow because they will give you enough basmati rice, naan, and entree for an extra meal and believe me when I say leftover Indian food is even better than leftover Chinese.

Over the past year I feel like the food has improved along with the restaurant interior. Food is nicely seasoned (even on the buffet, but to a lesser extent). The proprietor is very friendly and gets to know regulars well. On several occasions he's given me an entree to go I enjoyed off the buffet gratis. The ambiance is far different than six months ago--intimate and quiet. Looking forward to continued visits.

This was my first time having Indian food and I loved it!! The service and food was excellent! The bread is especially delicious. I definitely recommend it!

I love Indian Food, can't get enough of it, but the problem is I don't get it that often! I used to work close to here, so I have been to Namaste a couple times and have had 5 star experiences and I have had 3 star experiences, so I will average it into a 4! The only issues I have really had here is that sometimes the buffet food is not that warm! Which is a bummer! But I do dig the food, the veggie and vegan options are really good! And they made me Noki bread because Naan is not vegan! Which I really appreciated. I have only been here for the Buffet, but I would try a dinner here if I was closer! This is not a fancy place by any means, but it reminds me of small corner Indian places in big cities so I don't mind! But if you are going on a date, you might not want to pick this place to impress anyone by it's decor!

This is my go-to indian lunch buffet. There are alot of lovely little Indian places around town, but this buffet has great variety I can't find anywhere else. Plus, their buffet is open on the weekend which is a nice plus since I know many others only offer buffet on weekdays. I go to school in the afternoon so I was really missing out-so happy I found this place! The owner is also extremely friendly. Only downside is that the atmosphere isn't really happening (though they expanded a bit). Music was on but very quiet, making it a little awkward. Booths are hard and a little uncomfortable. The food definitely makes up for it.

Great food. We went for the lunch buffet and it's pretty awesome. Great place to try new stuff and step out of your comfort zone. Great place, I'll be back!

Best indian food in the Des Moines area. Husband and I moved here from California where the options were endless, and this little place holds its own! The chicken tikka masala is the best thing on their menu! Friendly service, and the grocery store a few doors down has some great finds.

Just about as good as anything on Devon St. in Chicago! Tandoori chicken and chana bhatura were our favorites.

There have never been a lot of options for Indian food in Des Moines. I had heard of Namaste but never been. In recent months I've been twice for the lunch buffet and twice in the evening. The place seems fairly recently remodeled and separated from the grocery store. The ambiance is nice. Its a fairly big space with booths and tables. Each evening we visited we had groups of 10 an they had tables to accommodate even bigger needs. Everything is a bit newer. 2 tvs on one side have the latest Bollywood on. The place is clean, nicely decorated, and with good lighting for dining. There is one server here fixed for lunch and evening. He's very competent and keeps up pretty well but you may have to wait a bit. Don't be in a hurry if you come here. I noticed our larger group plus another 6 booths full. There was room for more people in the dining room but they may need to add a server and kitchen help once they start filling up. The food. We ordered appetizers for the group. There were battered and fried vegetarian plate, a tandoori oven mixed meat grill plate and vegetable samosas. All of these were spot on. For me the capstone of a good Indian meal the the spicy and hot, saucy bowls which come out. I don't know Southern cuisine from northern but have tried the all the classics here and each of them hit the spot. There is plenty of room for new and experimental. Curry, Paneer, Tiki Masala, Vindaloo and several new favorites are all very good. Fluffy rice came in a bowl. The naan (plain, garlic, chili) are land from heaven and round out the meal perfect. The creamy vegetable and cauliflower dishes also hit the spot. One member of our party ordered a crepe dish. It was a giant crepe stuffed with veggies. There is much to discover but its aways hard to not just order something that was already great. They do serve beer and wine. They ere out of some domestics but the Indian beer were served in bombers. As I said before I've also been for the buffet. Its solid. Buffet is not diner and ordering off the menu. You can have some good flavors and get in/out quick. Its great to see a new local Indian place doing it right. It will make for a lot of happy evenings on flavorful dining.

I went here for dinner with my boyfriend and he INSISTED on ordering the food spicy. Do not order the food spicy. I was sweating and coughing all over. The food had great flavor but I just couldn't stand the heat but that was my boyfriends fault not the restaurants.

This is one of the best restaurants in the city and has to be the best Indian restaurant in the state. The food is consistently amazing, packed with flavor, and generally very authentic. Recent renovations have elevated the atmosphere to a level high above the price of the food. If the restaurant is busy, food seems to take longer than most places, but it is well worth the wait, and they actually refill your water when you need it, which alone puts the service in the 99th percentile of all restaurants. Namaste India is a must-eat-at for anyone who wants to not regret going out for dinner.

Went to the lunch buffet here on a Saturday the other day and was very impressed! I found this buffet to be a little better than most I've been to in Iowa. Like other Yelpers, I share the opinion that the decor could be spruced up a little bit. I felt like the booths seemed similar to what you would see at a fast food restaurant , which means they are hard without cushioning. The booths are set up in three aisles and when I was seated in the middle aisle, it felt kind of awkward. However, because I acknowledge hole-in-the-wall places usually tend to be the best places to eat, I won't be all hoity-toity and detract a star because the food makes up for it. On first impression, I noticed the buffet serves a lot of protein, at least from what I have seen of Indian buffets that try to do a balance of vegetarian and non-vegetarian. I really like the Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Saag, Fried Eggplant, and Ragu Paneer here. Ragu Paneer is paneer lathered with a buttery creamy sauce with cashews. I thought it was the best thing here! and something a little different then what I'm used to. The Naan is yummy and slightly doughy (which is how I prefer it) Also thought it was very interesting to see some Indo-Chinese food in the mix too. I saw the lunch/dinner menu online and holy mackeral...it's large! I am going to come here again to try out that menu. I highly recommend this place.

I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala for carry out and I was pleased. A little sweet but nothing crazy. Their "medium" hot was not hot at all, for my taste.

Excellent lunch buffet and spot for south Indian food. Service is friendly and everything is always fresh. (Which also means It isn't super speedy, but I'm ok with that.) My 3 year old loves It here as well.

I have never traveled in India, only sampled Indian cuisine in the US - I love the flavors, textures and variety at Namaste over any Indian restaurants I've been to state-side. However, I give great weight to my business colleagues from India that I bring here while they are visiting- without exception, they have all said that the food is excellent and authentic. Recent interior updates have definitely increased my rating. In the past, I had to warn people to look beyond the old tables, broken booths, etc. but now this is a great spot I consistently recommend for date night, a casual lunch or weekend stop. Be aware that if you are not familiar with the cuisine, you must come with an open mind and be ready to try new things.

Went here for lunch Saturday Afternoon. Ate the buffet, it was delicious. There was a little of everything here. I don't know much about Indian food but this place seems to do it right. There were Indian people here eating, what's that tell ya? There was one waiter taking dishes, refilling drinks, attending to customers, he was outstanding! He never quit moving the whole time we were there, he really busted his hump to serve! My wife, 3 year old daughter and I ate a great lunch and the bill was $22, not a bad deal at all, 3 yr old was free. The waiter remembered us and was very friendly, hope this helps, enjoy!!! Would have given it 5 stars but I don't know enough about Indian food yet. It was delicious though.

I decided to go here as a treat for my birthday. It's a small Indian restaurant with only one waiter for the entire place. This is pretty much ok as it wasn't extremely busy. However, we did have to wait about an hour for ordering and getting our food. The food was pretty good. It has very intense tastes. If you don't like spicy food, make sure you tell them mild! I don't mind spicy, but my mouth was on fire. I got the chicken in a mint curry sauce. I also got the garlic naan. My friend got the tandoori naan and that actually looked better than the garlic. I wouldn't get the garlic naan again. The service wasn't very good. I had to keep asking for more water and the waiter never asked us how we were doing or if we needed anything. I would probably rate the store 3.5 stars, but after telling the waiter it was my Birthday he offered to give my entire table free mango drinks. That kindness is definitely five stars.

Decor has been revamped and looks great! Its almost been a year since we ate at Namaste India. So while passing through to Omaha we went again for the lunch buffet. I must say that we loved the food this time too! The service of course is great. But the best part is they have remodeled the whole restaurant and the décor is now very nice!

Tried this place last night after a recommendation from a friend. Thumbs up! Food was great! Had the Chicken Tikka Masala in medium spicy which was really pretty spicy! Garlic naan was alright (I've had better ones). Decor was lacking. Waiter was really nice. Our food took awhile to come though. We'll definitely be going back!

Sorry for being rude ...but seriously I hate this place..the quality of the food is disgusting..Don't judge taste of India food just by eating at this place. I had visited this place more than couple of times..its waste of money. keep in mind the food that you eat at this is not fresh trust me !!! I don't care how big or small a restaurant is ..all i care about is their food... THE FOOD THAT YOU EAT AT THIS PLACE IS NOT ETHNIC/INDIAN PERIOD. QUALITY OF THE FOOD IS DISGUSTING !! this place is good for nothing

I visited Namaste a second time with my husband and some friends. The food, again, was quite good, and the service was friendly and prompt. We were cared for by the same waiter we'd had previously, and our friends told us that of the two waiters at Namaste, the one we've met is lovely, and the other is awful. So that may explain some of the complaints about the service.

  • Andy F.

Let's be honest, here. This is not a place you go for great service or charming atmosphere. The food, though, is outstanding. Wonderful South Indian cuisine that has no peers in Des Moines. Go here for food, not ambience, and you won't be disappointed.

I eat the lunch buffet here quite a bit. It's very good. It's a small place, so don't expect a lot of choices -there's just not room for any more. But I've never been disappointed by the food or the wait staff

What a let down! A friend and I were visiting Des Moines and both love Indian food so we made it a point to do a little research for places is DSM that got high marks. First of all, the place lacks atmosphere, (and that's putting it nicely) but that is the least of their troubles. The service was god awful. Between taking forever, having to remind the server (twice) about a chai tea that was ordered as we first were greeted (which by the way, showed up after we asked for the bill!), and the 20+, yes, 20+ minutes we sat and waited just for to go boxes...the service was definitely terrible. Inattentive is not the right word...nonexistent is more fitting. Onto the food...ugh. Gross. Really bad. We ordered a butter chicken and chicken korma, both mild and a side of naan. The butter chicken came out mild, and also very bland, while the chicken korma came out extremely spicy. The delicious spice blend that Indian is known for was nonexistent in these dishes. We were both super disappointed with our experience here and not only would we not come back, but would advise others to go elsewhere.

Just okay food, not good. Definitely a North India flair to the dishes including the Southern Ones. Funny thing is the food did not taste fresh - most notably the sambar. First Indian restaurant I tried in Des Moines. Heard there are 2 others, so will try those when next in town. Dinner on 7/26/12

Maybe because i havent been spoiled by big cities like NYC, i think this is the best Indian place in town! I've been there several times and the food comes out great every time. My personal favorite is the Lamb Rogan Yosh with a Mango Lassi and plenty of Naan. The decor could be better, nothing fancy by any means, but its not required since the food is great. Our waiter has always been friendly and talkative. The food usually takes just a tad long but nothing to fuss over when you get a great plate. One of my favorite restaurants in town.

Worst most disgusting and dirty Indian eatery i have been to. I am from India so i believe i can be a good judge. We went this Sunday night place was deserted with no front porch light. Went in went to restroom to wash hands apparently that doubles up as closet for hotel peoples littered with dirty clothes and shoes, walked oast dirty kitchen door with a big bucket filled with dirty dishes and even dirtier water. I know its restaurant u get this kind of things but not in ur face. Ordered butter chicken and nav rattan korma. Chicken was allrite korma was just vegies hashed up in some gravy no flavor and add to it everything felt stale and bad. I mean how can any restaurant serve this kind of stale food with shittiest cleanliness i jlhave ever seen can be in business. Please this place either has to revamp its working 200% or just shut down. I cannot imagine people giving good review to this shit hole. I mean i will not recommwnd rhis place to u even if u r starbing go to MacD instead. I felt so disgusted and cheated not to tell you sick after spending my 30 bucks on this shit. This place should no be called restaurant not normal people atleast.

I don't need my restaurants to have a superb atmosphere if the food is good and the service is prompt, and Namaste India totally satisfied in those regards. My food was quick, spicy, delicious and I perceived that it was healthy (spinach and potatoes). They handled the twenty or so of us who had wandered in as a group easily. If you are like me, and possessed of a somewhat sensitive tummy, you will be pleased to note that Namaste India's offerings gave me no trouble, despite the heat of the food, and that made me the happiest of all!

The food was fine, but the service needs work. They forgot that we ordered the lentil soup. It took a long time to take our order. The style is different from India Star but it takes about as long to eat there.

Frequenting the countless Indian restaurants in NYC spoiled me. Indian became one of my favorite ethnic foods. When I couldn't hold off my cravings for curry any longer I headed to Namaste... The decor is lacking, it's kind of dark inside and there was no music playing. Not the place to go if you are hoping for ambiance with your vindaloo. Side Note: I was used to the standard New York treat of Papadum flatbreads with an assortment of chutney delivered to the table (like chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant). We did not get that at Namaste. I was a little disappointed about that, but I can't expect everything to be like it was in NY. So, that definitely didn't sour my experience. I was expecting a buffet from what I had read here but was pleasantly surprised by a menu from which to order. Their menu had the standard Indian curries and appetizers. I had a lentil soup that was deliciously spiced though lacked any whole lentils. The menu had a few new things I had not seen. I tried the masala dosa. It was a large rice flour crepe with spiced potato filing. It was interesting to try, and tasty enough, but left something to be desired. I will have to try something else next time. R had their lamb do piazza. He ordered it spicy. He says, "I thought it was delicious and pleasantly spicy!" I will go back to Namaste. P.S. It is attached to an Indian grocery carrying a wide variety of staple ingredients and prepared foods and spice mixtures. I think, they also had Bollywood movies for rental. (Dhoom!!) Fun!

Fantastic (and cheap!) lunch buffet. I was pleasantly surprised to see goat curry on the lunch buffet - usually a pricey dish on any Indian menu, so paying something like $8 for all-you-can eat was divine. The naan was delicious, the tikka masala was wonderful, as was the chana masala. Our water glasses never went unfilled and our server was super attentive and friendly. Everything was a little on the lukewarm side (except the naan), but it didn't really bother me. The spice level was perfect for me, but a little hot for some of my dining companions. Overall, I'll definitely be back!

Rude staff and bad food. That about summarizes things. Service was simply beyond bad. The buffet lunch didn't seem at all fresh and tasted like it was improperly cooked and then reheated several times.
