My beautiful fiancee and I had lunch here a little over a week ago, on a Tuesday, and had been here for dinner about a month ago, on a Sunday. The Sunday dinner was amazing! Had I written a review then, I would've gone with 5 stars, but had a few issues on the Tuesday visit. On the Sunday visit I had the pork pot stickers, which I loved! We also ordered the Hawkeye rolls as one of her friends recommended. They were amazing also! I can't recall what it had and it's not on their menu, but it's delicious!. The food came out pretty fast and was still warm when it reached our table. For the dinner I had the Kal-Bi (Korean BBQ beef). This is my favorite type of beef and there is a certain way that I like it. I like the bone still in, it gives it a better flavor, in my opinion. I have a review of another restaurant where I live that had the same meal and that beef was horrendous. So I went in with high hopes that theirs was as good as I make it (found a great recipe on Pinterest). As soon as it came out I noticed the bone was still in and was grilled to a perfect color, I was happy to see that. When I bit into it I told my gorgeous fiancee that this was what I was looking for at that other restaurant and the taste was just right on point. The dinner came with rice, which is perfect for the beef and the overall meal was a perfect 5 stars. But then we went back on a busier day for lunch. I knew what I wanted and after finding the Kal-Bi under the bento box section I was excited to have it again. The beef was perfect again, it came with rice, and a good portion of breaded vegetables, which was good. I was very very pleased with my selection again and will always have their Korean ribs when I'm there. The reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the mistakes made by the server. My amazing fiancee ordered a soup, which I can't recall the type, but we specifically asked for no shrimp. Lo and behold the soup showed up with shrimp. The request was even on the receipt so either the kitchen didn't read it or the server didn't mention it to the kitchen. Luckily she asked for no shrimp because she says they are bottom feeders and not because she's allergic. Had she been allergic I would've definitely raised the issue to the manager rather than just mentioning it to the server. We also again ordered the pot stickers, but this time they didn't show up. Our waiter brought them over after our main meal and said sorry cause the kitchen took a while to make them...I knew this was not true as when we bit into them they were cold. So my guess is they were sitting at the window for a while. Overall, this place is great and we will definitely go back. Hopefully next time we get our correct meals and on time.

This place has a great atmosphere and would be good for groups or lunch. They have both "traditional" meals like Orange Chicken as well as a long sushi menu. I had the unicorn roll ($8) (not on the regular sushi menu) which had fantastic flavor as well as a spicy tuna roll ($5). The egg rolls ($3) are handmade and very tasty. Everything was extremely fresh and made onsite - nothing out of a box here! They also did a nice job taking requests on the sushi. I got brown rice and a friend I was with got no rice. There are a lot of sushi places in town but this one is certainly one to try!

Checked out this place for lunch today. Got there a little before noon. There was no wait and plenty of seating. I opted for the shrimp and vegetable lunch special with aside salad. The ginger dressing wasn't the best I'd ever had. My coworker ordered the generals chicken with potstickers. The food didn't totally wow me but I'm not sure if it could. Considering it was the lunch hour I was happy to get in and out had fast as we did. The service was prompt and attentive.

Certainly nothing special, and perhaps hovering towards a two, but I found their menu choices to be somewhat different from other local restaurants of this nature. The Captain Crunch sushi roll I had was one of the worst cooked rolls I've entertained--the shrimp wasn't tempura, but was closer to fried shrimp you would expect at Red Lobster. It certainly made the flavor off-putting and is not something I would ever expect at an Asian restaurant. Additionally, while the sauce was plated nicely, it was overdone and detracted from the delicate balance of flavors sushi should have. The bento box was decent in portions and it certainly was nice having edamame on the salad. The dressing was creamy and had a hint of garlic and sesame flavors. Perfect balance to the rest of the components in my meal. The tempura vegetables were awful--as if they hadn't been fried long enough. It was crisp on the outside but very soft inside, indicate they may have been rushing since I went in towards the end of lunch. No ponzu sauce was included. The Korean bul-go-gi (thinly sliced beef) was very tender but didn't seem to have much flavor outside of the sesame seeds sprinkled on top. A minimal amount of rice was included. Miso soup was average; there's an option to switch to hot & sour or sizzling rice for $2. You also get a sampling of a California roll. Service seemed rushed, I felt like there was a need to order quickly. This may have been due to only having one server (that I noticed) working the entire restaurant. As this establishment is a fair ways away from both work and my residence, it'd have to be outstanding for me to become a regular and I'd have to say it just doesn't distinguish itself in any discernible way.

We ordered the following: The serving size for the price you pay I would say it's on the smaller size. Service wasn't too bad. It appeared our server was the only server for the entire restaurant. We came on a Saturday around 7:30 PM. Fried calamari: the batter was okay I believe it was tempura with two dipping sauces. One was ponzu and spicy mayo. Pork potstickers: these were very small and tasted like they were from a bag. Sushi: was okay, but not the best in DSM. The fried tempura rolls were on the greasy and soggy side and a lot of sauce was put on top of the tempura roll. Kalbi: you get about 6 pieces for one order. Tasted decent, but not the best I have ever had. B Chow fen/fun: This a Chinese noodle dish. I thought it was rather on the sweet side and very greasy. Tres Delight: typical stir fry with chicken, beef, and shrimp. Once again portion size isn't much for the $13 price. Twice cooked pork: probably one of the better dishes we ordered. They use pork belly stir fried with some various vegetables.

I've been coming to the mandarin since I was 5 years old. Even tho it has changed locations this restaurant is better before.

Like the rolls, sushi, and sashimi along with sake and mainstream Japanese beer here. Setting is austere. Not bad for the area, but not as good as Miyabi 9. Wish the specialty rolls had better lunch time pricing..

My wife is the Sushi lover while I would rather have cooked food. We both can be satisfied here. I particularly like their General Tso's Chicken while my wife's favorite is the Philadelphia Roll. I brought a friend and he feels this is the best Chinese food in the Des Moines area. It's a trip for us to go there but we manage about twice per month.

Rating based on food, not service. I went for lunch, it wasnt busy at all. My meal had quick order-to-table time, unique tasting sushi (autumn roll is a real conglomeration), and I was served a large amount of jasmine tea in a teapot for a buck. Service was impersonal.

Poor lunch experience. Service was the hallmark of this bad experience. Felt rushed in and rushed out, felt scolded by the waiter...list goes on. He asked if we needed more time to order and I said "yes please this is our first time" and he said nothing and rushed away. My mom and I had decided on an appetizer but he skipped over our table to help the next one, who had come in after us (they also recieved their entrees before us despite ordering after). Waiter angrily refilled my water more than necessary, often when only 1/8th of it was drank. Edamame overcooked. Crab rangoons taste like chip dip. Sushi was good. I've never felt more unwanted anywhere when taking my mom out to lunch. Do yourself a favor and go to Zuzap or Haiku

Choose elsewhere if you consider yourself a "foodie" or well versed in Sushi or Hot-N-Sour soup. If you are not from the Des Moines area PLEASE don't eat here. I would hate for you to judge this city's sushi ability by this place, I have a list at the end of this review of my suggestions. If you are from the Des Moines area go elsewhere too (see the list below). Lunch today 2-4-14 was a total disappointment and waste of $35. We ordered the Hot-N-Sour soup that so many below recommend. It was OK at best. We also had an order for Crab Rangoon, again ok but a little over fried (Haiku down in the Drake area is light years better for perfect hand made Crag Rangoon). Lastly, the sushi, the third and final strike. We were told the Philadelphia Roll and the Tuna Mango rolls were "VERY POPULAR"....not sure why. These were boring and tasteless. We had to have a side of spicy mayo just to finish them. If you want to get some good sushi in this area here are three suggestions: Wasabi Chi (Merle Hay Mall area) or Haiku (mentioned above in the Drake area). As a side note the water was bad, the waitress was adequate (and that's being nice) and the amount of dust on the ceiling fans and light fixtures was in one word.....GROSS!

Most authentic Chinese food in town from a Chinese perspective. Ask for the special menu(with Chinese and Korean scripts).

My family had been looking for a local, Chinese Restaurant. This place is exactly what we were looking for! We will go back often! Delicious food at a great price!

asked for hot spice in my general chao's chicken and got 1 pepper and it wasn't spicy at all - my husband got kung poa beef and he had about 20 hot peppers in his. Kevin either quit or passed away. waitress was a Caucasian woman who must not like her job - no smiles, no greeting. went around 1:15 yesterday 11-13 but won't be back - this is the 2nd time we asked for hot and I got no spice whatsoever! ALSO THE DISHES WE ORDERED - GENERAL CHICKEN AND BEEF KUNG POA WAS THE SIZE OF AN APPETIZER VERY SMALL PORTIONS!

Solid. That's the best description. I flew in from Chicago and needed a good meal. Yelp to the rescue. The reviews were helpful. I had the rainbow roll and a vegetable roll. Top quality! The waiter gave his opinions about what he liked and why. Helpful. Like I say--Solid.

Service was ok, not great and barely over good. Sushi tasted good but not rolled correctly. Sliced very thin and very lose. For the price, not worth it.

This is the furthest west sushi place in town at the moment. It can't compete with the more popular sushi spots in town. They don't particularly pretend to try either. The ambiance is nice with dim lighting and good decoration. I have never seen this place be very loud or noisy, which I like. The food is pretty great, but not for the price. Better places in town have more bang for the buck. A few specials combining soup/salad, nigiri, and a roll would make this place much more popular and double my frequency. I almost always get sushi and I come fairly often ~6 times a year. This is mainly due to the location and consistency. Overall it is a nice place for a quick bite, just not on the cheap.

Great place. We had a Groupon that enticed us to give this place a try. My Wife and I were very impressed with the atmosphere and the service, but the food was the star. We started with a plate of edamame ($3) that was the best I have ever tasted. This was a good start to our meal. For the main course we stuck with sushi (Though they have a nice menu of other Asian inspired entrees) We ordered a serving of Spicy Tuna ($5/8pcs very spicy! I loved it. My wife liked it but only had a couple rolls, too hot for her), Alaska Roll ($7/4pcs Salmon, lettuce, kappa, kani, avocado. This was a large roll that was tough to eat in one bite but was very good) Yellow-tail Maki ($5/8pcs Average roll, average taste) and finally a small platter of sashimi ($10/6pcs Our three fish pieces were yellow-tail, tuna and salmon. All were very fresh and cold.) Pricing was average for sushi around town. They also had different heat levels for their entrees ( *=Hot **=Hotter and what they called a "Kevin-Style" which my wife and I had a laugh at because my name is Kevin and I love spicy food! So we definitely will be back again so I can try the "Kevin-Style" heat and see if I can live up to my own name!

I absolutely love Mandarin Grill! I've eaten there at least a good 20 or 30 times and I've never been disappointed with anything. Great food, great service, reasonable prices! Their Captain Crunch and Monterey rolls are amazing!

Don't waste your time if you're looking for grocery-store quality; this is top-notch. Sushi is always fresh. Sashimi was cut thick, not see through and paper thin. The vegetables in my Kung Pao Beef were crisp and al dante, not soggy and overcooked. The waitress told me that one of the two owners in the front is a vegetarian and the other rarely eats meat, mostly vegetables only so they demand fresh ingredients. That's awesome to hear! And their lunch bento box special is awesome but get there early. I have to wait often for a table during their lunch rush. I recommend the Kalbi bento box, but it is a ribeye cut so it has the trim of fat on top. But, it's so delicious and the meat just melts in your mouth. And for a $10 lunch, can't beat that! I do substitute for their awesome hot and sour soup but I'm not a fan of miso soup, which comes with their bento box special. This is my favorite restaurant in town, can you tell?!?!?

I was so looking forward to a good sushi dinner. It was just so-so and for 29 bucks, a little pricey. I had a pot sticker appetizer, sampled 3 sashimi and 2 sushi (2 bites each) and a diet coke. Very attractive place for being in an office strip mall. Friendly service and decent selecion. Just an 'ok" experience.

Solid chinese takeout. Better than average...certainly any "panda" type booty-joint. By far, really. Their food is a bit more thoughtful than average.

The menu is fairly extensive, the atmosphere is comfortable for a date or with your family, the restaurant was clean, the service was attentive, the value of portions for the cost was as-expected, and the food was good. Not the best Chinese I've ever had but certainly better than your average strip-mall Chinese food!

We had our company meeting here last Saturday. Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Probably the best hot and sour soup I've ever tasted. Excellent!

Hidden in a strip mall just off the path it can be deceiving from the outside. Upon entering it seemed more open an bigger then expected. Decent decor, enough tables and booths, and sushi bar had about 6-10 seats. Staff was friendly and courteous. Just went there for a sushi fix after finding it on Yelp and semi-close by. Didnt have to wait to get it on a busy Sat night. You get a "checklist" of what you would like form the sushi bar (which all range from $4-15'ish). You also get the full menu, which we didnt try but nice amount of offerings and sounded good. Miso soup was decent and only $1 a bowl. Got 3 rolls and all were presented nicely and delicious. Consistent to what I expected. Would try again when in the area.

The Mandarin is, hands down, my favorite restaurant. The longest we've ever had to wait was 10 minutes, on a Saturday night with the house packed. The service is prompt and friendly, and the owners are almost always there and they remember their regular customers. Oh, but the food...I can't say enough good things! This is not your usual Chinese fare - this is good quality meat, fresh steamed vegetables, hot and crisp appetizers and a great drink selection. Try the General Tso Chicken - you can get it mild or spicy, but either way it's great! This was also the first place I ever tried sushi - the Tempura Maki is a great roll for someone new to sushi, but my husband's favorite is the Rainbow Roll, which is a good middle ground between sashimi and nagiri. They have Bento Boxes available during the week for lunch at reasonable prices. Since I've had other restaurant's sushi, I can say that The Mandarin isn't the best sushi ever, but it's definitely good and I've never been disappointed.

After 3 weeks traveling we were hungry for vegetables and chose Asian food to load up on veggies. The green beans with tofu were a little over done with too much soy sauce which made them very salty (my doc wouldn't be happy with my choice). Hubs enjoyed the chicken and broccoli stir fry which was properly seasoned. Brown is rice available for an extra fee. Good hot & sour soup. I would return and try a different dish if it weren't so far from Denver. Didn't try their sushi.

It's outward "Chinese food in a strip mall" appearance is deceiving. The decor is classy, modern and clean and the kitchen consistently puts out the best Chinese food in Des Moines, which is why it gets 5 Stars. I've had far better Chinese fare in my life, but I don't expect a city like Des Moines to have NYC talent/quality. The Hot and Sour Soup is AMAZING. Usually the soups at Chinese restaurants I could care less about, but here, I cannot come and not get a bowl. The crab rangoon are good and the pot stickers are even better. Most people go for their Honey Walnut Shrimp, which I enjoy quite a bit, but I always seem to reach for the Mongolian Beef (which reheats well) and a sushi roll. Portions are nice, and staff are always quick to keep your glasses filled.

My co-workers and I went to the Mandarin for lunch on Monday - the ladies who got the bento boxes really enjoyed them. Several people ordered a main dish and they were fine as well. However, I ordered the sushi and was less than impressed. I ordered the sake nigiri and that was pretty good. I also ordered the tempura maki and the Alaska roll. My primary complaints were that the pieces were cut way too thick. The Alaska roll had two layers of rice around the filling so it was bland. I would say each piece was quite larger than a silver dollar and they were about inch thick. I did have a small salad with their house dressing which is pretty good but the drenched the lettuce in it so it was soggy and just too sweet. Our server was very attentive during the first half of the visit but no one got refills until after we finished eating and she was processing our checks. My bill was $30 so next time, I will likely try a bento box.

Just OK. Ambience was great. There appeared to be an abundance of staff and very few customers for late lunch. We appreciated that everyone was 'accent-less,' but I wonder if there are comprehension issues either with the work involved, the menu, or the language. We read the menu, ordered lunch specials, understanding the menu to say that white rice came with lunch specials, but that substitutions (brown rice, fried rice, noodles) could be made for $1. We tried to get a substitution and explained what we wanted three times, but instead were given a separate order of fried rice -- in addition to the standard serving of rice. Staff also brought us egg rolls, then retracted them as soon as they were set on the table, like he couldn't remember what we ordered. There were only two other tables with two guests each. No salt and pepper on the table. No knives brought. Food was plated very attractively, but wasn't spectacular in flavor. Didn't check the restroom.

My family and I tried Mandarin Grill over the holidays with a nice Groupon deal and loved it!! Good service and a great menu selection that goes beyond just sushi. The food is a little pricey, but this is a nice family friendly establishment for those with young children. We definitely had a tasty dinner and positive dining experience.

I was just here for lunch yesterday. After having visited the Beaverdale location multiple times, I thought it was time I had paid the new location a visit. The food is exactly the same quality as the old location --- delicious, fresh, authentic. I was at the Mandarin grill with a friend. We had a couple traditional dishes along with 3 different rolls of sushi. Everything was prepared perfectly, service was quick and friendly, and we were very satisfied after our meal. I believe little has changed since the Mandarin was a Beaverdale staple...except now they offer some really good sushi to add onto the delicious menu. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant in the future.

I have been to their old location once. To me, the old Mandarin was more authentic than the new one. I found that their menu is limited. Most Chinese restaurants have a bigger menu than this one. I have tried a few of their dishes, and only one really impressed me. I love their walnut shrimps. I remember watching Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives and saw an Alaska episode. There was a Chinese restaurant there that had walnut shrimps. I had never heard of or tried it before, but it looked delicious. So when I first came to Mandarin Grill & Sushi Bar, I was delighted to see this on the menu. It surprised on how it had a great balance of sweet honey and tangy mayonnaise. The size of the shrimps were also satisfying. So far, this is the only dish I feel worthy of recommending. About the sushi, I usually don't expect much when a restaurant serves different Asian cuisines and sushi. Sushi is a specialty food. You either find a good Japanese restaurant or a good sushi bar that serves good sushi. I have yet found one that cook good Chinese dishes and make good Japanese sushi at the same time. I still go here whenever I have craving for their walnut shrimps.
