I was recommended by an aunt to dine here when I described my urgent need for prime rib. I don't get out to Clive often, but was still surprised to see what seemed to be an innocuously hidden establishment, though the parking lot was filling quickly. Upon entering, I noticed dark wood paneling crawling up to a 13-14 foot ceiling with cunning lighting and what appeared to be brushed nickel chandeliers. My aunt later told me that this restaurant had been here for years, but everything felt new and richly appointed and yet still very inviting. Our server was top notch, attentive but not loitering. Her recommendations were spot on and she knew the full menu. The food was amazing. We started with the bacon-wrapped scallops, and they were perfectly prepared and delicious! My wife had the queen filet and I tried the 8oz prime. When it came out I thought they'd incorrectly brought me a 12 oz prime rib. The server (Patty) beamed and replied that they serve generously. They err a touch on the rare side, which is exactly where I wanted my steak. The salad bar was large but I wouldn't say it was their best feature. We finished with good coffee. Overall it was an excellent dining experience!

Went here with my parents. Lots of gray hairs in the crowd. Had 8oz filet mignon. Ordered medium rare, was served medium and it was a little chewy with a membrane or something running through the middle. Baked potato was undercooked. Salad bar was okay, had too many sweet Jell-O salads and not enough salad toppings in my opinion. Would have preferred no ice berg lettuce in the salad mix. Bread was bland but soft and chewy. I have had better but I have also had worse. Ambience was nice but not formal and service was great. I did feel it was a tad overpriced for a place that shares a building with a muffler shop.

The atmosphere is very nice, the booths give you privacy but well enough lit to read the menu. The menu has a good variety without overloading. I tried the 12oz ribeye with a shotgun rub, asparagus instead of a potato, and their salad bar. The salad bar had a fairly wide variety of items, the cut produce was fresh and crisp and decent assortment of dressings. I would ask them to add a balsamic vinaigrette to add a lighter choice. The steak was ordered medium and showed up a little closer to medium rare but not by much. The run was good and the size seemed larger than 12oz. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and spiced. The service was very good with just right amount of interaction. With tip I was right at $31.

Five of us had a disappointing lunch at John & Nick's. It started by hearing the waitress let people at the table know some of the entrees were not available as they were out of ingredients. That's never a good sign. While we were there we watched a staff member leave and then return with groceries from the store across the street. You could see buns and bread in the sack. I am not sure what else! Several of us ordered grilled cheese with tomato. While we waited we talked about a good grilled cheese. That is not what arrived. What was on the plate was dry Texas toast with one thin slice of barely melted American cheese with a thin slice of tomato. The three of us who ordered had several bites and left the rest, as it wasn't worth eating. Those who had the salad bar said it was fine. The service was fine. From the reviews and word of mouth the place gets I wasn't expecting much, and we didn't get it.

I last reviewed J&N's in June of '11 and they've definitely stepped up their game. While the restaurant area hasn't changed, in terms of appearance, the food has definitely improved in quality and consistency. I REALLY like the shotgun rub the do up their ribeye with - FYI, you can get that on different cuts too. Love the salad bar. If you order doubles at the bar, get a cab. Brother pours heavy. Really glad that this place has improved! Definitely a go-to since I live so close.

Tuesday night - took my Mother for our first ever visit to John & Nicks. We have watched the TV commercials and Mom thought the kid was cute.... We got there about 8:10 PM - the place was VERY slow (The bar was closing down and there were only two other tables of guest in the restuarant.) We were seated near the salad bar (I knew from other reviews NOT to sit near the door to the kitchen with all the yelling they supposedly do "COMING IN!" "COMING OUT!" - then again they weren't busy, so I dont think that would have been an issue tonight) Our hostess was pleasant, and so was the server - we had water and I asked for a straw - the look on the server's face said she was thinking "What the hell do you want a straw for?" She brought out straws and they were SO SMALL I could hardly get a sip of water thru it! It was like a stir stick for a cup of coffee - but longer! I asked for something larger and she laughingly said "We have a kids straw" - I said, "is it larger than this one?" She said it was, (again with a half-hearted laugh), and I said GREAT! I would like one....she rolled her eyes (FIRST CLUE we are not dealing with the type of servers a place like this SHOULD be employing). She returned with a kids cup straw (which was actually perfect!) - too bad a nice place like that doesnt have real straws... The table had a candle on it (as did all the tables) - but only one or two were lit in the place (and at tables that were empty) This was a special evening for my Mother & I - I asked our server if she had a lighter - she looked at me like I was crazy again and said, "no". I asked her if she could light the candle (She had JUST blown out one of the candles at another table) - She rolled her eyes AGAIN..... (strike TWO!) and lit the candle. We went to the salad bar - VERY NICE - nice selection! When we got back to the table - we had a mini loaf of bread on the table - it was cold. I waited to get our servers attention, (by then, she had brought out the entrees) and I mentioned the bread was cold - could we get a warm loaf? She looked at me and mumbled (so I could easily hear it) "It was warm when I brought it to you..." Ugh - STRIKE THREE! We were having a conversation (my Mother & I), as the two servers and hostess began talking between themselves as if the place was empty? At times, trying to include my Mother & I in their conversation as if we were intersted in their joking ways.... Teasing one another and acting like they were NOT in a nice restaurant? I would expect to see this kind of behavior in a Dennys at 2 in the morning - but not a nice attmosphere like this place has? Then again, maybe that is how John (and Nick) run things there? Very un-classy and low-class? "Lets dress the place up to LOOK nice - but in reality - we are Duck Dynasty gone Iowa Restaurant"..... (sigh.,) We had the Steak and crab-stuffed shrimp. The steak was not a nice cut of meat - rather a disappointing piece of something I doubt I would feed my dog. TRUST ME - I am not a snob - I have eaten at a Dennys, Perkins, etc. - and frankly the QUALITY of the meat and service is better at both of those places.... We finished and got out of there, I left feeling our evening was not what I had hoped it would have been... As we were trying to leave our table - we ran into a push sweeper - left standing up right next to the table next to ours... Yes, it was after 9 PM (Closing time), but four other tables had come in since we had began our meal... they were all still there as we left. Would I return? no. Sorry. If I want fine dining - I will go elsewhere with my money to have atmosphere AND service/food that is up to par. If I want "diner quality" food & serivce - there are plenty of places with the same level of service and food quality for MUCH less.... Hello Perkins, here I come! (and they give you a free piece of pie on Mondays!) LOL I wish them the best.... find new employees and get better cuts of meat. You get ONE CHANCE to give a FIRST IMPRESSION. Our first impression was NOT good for what you are SAYING you are offering - save your money on the commecials - pay a little more for GOOD servers and better cuts of meat - and you will have a winner on your hands...

Four of us stopped at John & Nick's at around 4:30 this afternoon. We've had good meals in the past there, so we expected the same today. When we arrived, no one was available to seat us. Finally, a waitress showed up from the bar to take us to a booth. Several items on the salad bar looked dried out. Two of our group ordered medium filets, and they were burned and tough. I ordered the Mahi Mahi, which was okay. We didn't order any drinks (just water), and our bill came to $47 (for just two of us). When we left, two of the waitresses were sitting in a booth, and there was still no one at the entrance to greet new guests. A disappointing experience.

Friendly service. The pea salad, macaroni salad, and another unidentifiable salad was very watery. The rest of the salad bar was awesome. Ordered the shrimp platter, it was bad. Fries seemed as if they were cooked twice to "heat them up" before serving. The stuffed shrimp tasted like stove top stuffing. Popcorn shrimp & fried shrimp were obviously straight out of the freezer. The prime rib was amazing.

I have been to John and Nicks a few times for lunch. They have a great salad bar and great food. I would give 5 stars but the lunch special steak seems to be a poor cut with lots of fat. But the staff is polite and place is clean with great atmosphere!!

My fiancé and I ate here on 10/17/14. We have been wanting to try it for some time but were turned off from mixed reviews from other Yelp users previously. I am so sad I didn't try this restaurant sooner! From the awesome salad bar to the tender meat with amazing flavor I cannot complain about anything other than the slightly awkward waitress - but you can have that anywhere. I had the steak de burgo with the creamy white wine sauce and it was fantastic. My fiancé had the shish kabob and said it was amazing as well. I'm reviewing this after we experienced a less than average meal at Jesse's Embers two weeks ago - the steak was overcooked (charred) and the chicken was from a frozen bag along with some canned peaches. YUCK.

I don't know what some of the other reviewers are experiencing, but iv been here a dozen times and on different nights, and have always had great service and great food . Hands down the best prime rib in the area., great salad bar, always fresh, okay I do know the booths by the salad bar, you do get some butts in your face, but that's the only but you get from me,!

We went for Valentine's Day and only had a 90 minute wait, very reasonable for a holiday with no reservations or call aheads. The bar tenders were very attentive and personable and when we were seated the service was prompt and friendly. Food was fantastic and portioned well for the price. We will definitely be back!

We have been to John & Nick's multiple times and we have had good food. However, we have been verify disappointed with the service we have received. They are not welcoming and make you feel as if they are annoyed that you walked in. It is unlikely we will try them again.

Had company from out of town and they wanted steak. We took them here. It was during the Christmas Holiday. The food was really good. But in addition our server was so pleasant and friendly. The place had a beautiful decor for the holiday and it was nice and cozy!

What a strange place. The menu is really standard steakhouse, with the exception of having few appetizers to choose from. A significant portion of their menu has crab stuffing, which is good but narrows the selection. The salad bar, although it has very few items, comes with the meal and has higher end items such as several different types of olives. Overall not a great place to eat, but not bad for the money. One last oddity is the wine selection. By the glass is mostly low end wine at standard 100% markup, however by the bottle in addition to low to mid range wines they also carry Opus One for $280.00 and Caymus for $100, with Stags Leap and others thrown in. The bar area was nice and cozy, though a couple of rude people who were apparently regulars didn't add to the ambiance and the bartenders were less than attentive. With all that said, the waitress brought us a whole new loaf of bread to take home when we asked for our leftover bread that our toddler was enjoying. Service was definitely good for us, though I noticed that not every table had the same experience.

I ate here yesterday with my mother since she was craving steak. After reading all the reviews concerning this steak house, we both settled on a 12oz slab of prime rib each. Prior to receiving our food, we explored the salad bar that received so much praise. Maybe I've been blessed with such food diversity in California, but I didn't find anything special about it. True, there was a decently large selection. However, the selection was nearly identical to every other salad bar I have enjoyed both in quantity and quality. Now, you may be asking why I would give this restaurant 4 stars if my perception of the highly acclaimed salad bad was so mediocre. The reason? The Prime Rib!!! This thing was massive both in length and width. Not only that, but the slab of meat was ridiculously juicy. Without a doubt, this is the best prime rib I have ever eaten. Juicy and mouth watering. I hope to come back here to try the rib-eye!

Nice atmosphere and very intimate. Has to be some of the best Pirme Rib I have had. With your meal you also get to have a salad bar and go through as often as you like.I also had a long Island icetea and let me tell you they did not skimp on the alcohol! I would love to eat here again.

Going outside of the normal routine of dining spots worked out superbly on this occasion. Early notions of this suburban place included strip mall storefronts, minimalist decor and vinyl booths. However, we were greeted with dark stained wood and a light Sinatra flavor throughout the dining room which provided a nice ambiance. The menu wasn't overly packed with unnecessary items catered to one customer. A choice of pasta, chicken, fish, steak and the staple - prime rib. The salad bar was well stocked and fresh. The type of salad bar you leave with pockets full of croutons. The meal was preceded with the standard bread and butter I ordered the 12 ounce prime rib and my girlfriend the 8 oz sirloin. My previous prime rib experiences contained a good deal of gristle and fat but John and Nick's correctly serve a clean piece of meat. The au jus had the right amount of saltiness when previous au jus tasted like beef broth. The garlic mashed potatoes had the right amount of garlic and salt with a light accompaniment of butter. Never in the mindset to save room for desert, we decided to give it a try. Instead of a menu the server brought out their deserts on a plate. The pitch sold as the waiter let us know the desert was free because of my birthday. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Cream Cake was just the right amount for two of us to split and provided the taste of sweet to end the night of flavor. Overall a great surprise found in John and Nicks and certainly a new staple to the rotation.

We showed up on New years eve at 4:45 pm just before they filled up. The service was fair at best, the staff was not friendly but not rude either just like they didn't want to be there. Food was poor. Prime rib grisly and baked potato average. My wife had a sirloin and it was tough and slightly under cooked. My son had chicken fries and didn't eat them because they where hard and overcooked. We also wasn't impressed how we had to walk though the people waiting for tables to get to the salad bar. The salad bar was hard to get the items in the back and they put the croutons by the plates so you had to get them before the lettuce or go back and get them and crowd in line like some people did. We had wanted to try this establishment for some time but won't be going back. Higher priced than other steak houses in our opinion. Very disappointed and would have been even more if we would have waited for a table. We may have had too high of expectations because of the hype about the steak house we heard and the other steak house they had run previously.

Our service in the bar failed from start to finish. Ignored us, then took 15 min to get our bottle of wine. The server then broke the cork due to inexperience. We moved into the lounge and service was then phenomenal! The menu is pretty boring old Des Moines fare. I got the De Burgo because it was the most interesting thing I could find and it was good. The desert was boxed, Sweet Street I think so save your cash there. We will be back to hopefully raise the score. Final word would be: give it a try. We went soon after opening so there may be growing pains but the atmosphere along is worth a visit. UPDATE: We went back recently and had a wonderful experience. Moved to 4 star.

This location is a nice dark, romantic place for a good steak and a fabulous salad bar. Our server was Anita each time and she is great. Once our steak was just OK, and another time the steak was perfect. You get a good amount of food for your money. My friends and I enjoy hanging out with Austin the bartender in the bar section. There is a relaxed atmosphere in the bar and they have a nice selection of drink options. You can also enjoy the same specials in the bar, that the restaurant section is offering. A nice casual place to grab food or drink when in the area.

Very nice atmosphere. Large lounge area, which is nice because there can be a wait on weekends. Service was excellent. The salad bar is better than average. The steaks are excellent. Well worth a visit.

This place has a great Prime Rib. One of the best Pime Ribs I've ever had. The price was on par with most great Prime Rib places, however, it includes a full salad bar, which most great Prime Rib places don't offer. This place is almost always packed and the ambiance, I find is great, despite an earlier poster's opinion. To each his/her own.

I stopped in at John & Nick's during a recent business trip to Des Moines. It came strongly recommended by my hotel as a great place for a steak. I enjoy local over chain restaurants, so after a quick perusal of reviews on Yelp I convinced my group that we should check it out. We were promptly greeted at the door and seated; the restaurant had people in it, but it wasn't full. After a few minutes we were greeted by a server who asked us if we had been told who our server was. I told her that we had not, she let us know she would find out and come back. Then we waited. A few minutes later she came back to say that she would be taking care of us, and asked us for our drink orders. I travel with a health conscious crowd, so the standard drink order was water- not for me though. Since it was my first time in the area, I wanted to celebrate with a beer. I asked the server what was available and was given the reply that there were 48 different beers in house. I then asked if she had a list, she informed me that there wasn't a list but if I named a beer I wanted she would tell me if they had it. I googled local brews and asked if they had them; nope. Then I broadened the scope to some better known ones; nope. Frustrated, she asked if I wanted to look at the computer and pick from there. I feel that this should have been an option after the first round of failed beer ordering. I wasn't thrilled about her exasperated tone with me- seeing as it was her omniscient knowledge of the beer selection that lead me to be facing a point of sale terminal. I selected a beer and made my way back to the table, and then we waited. Our drinks eventually arrived and we ordered our food. I chose the NY Strip cooked medium rare. While our dinners were being prepared we given free reign to their "world famous" salad bar. There was a good selection of salads and toppings, as well as some pasta salads and desert treats. I had opted to skip the salad bar, but a few of my colleagues selected some of the food and commented that it was good. Then we waited some more, again. Good company makes time go by quickly, I had barely noticed that 40 minutes had passed since we ordered. I made some repeat trips to the terminal to select new beers, and was growing in my confidence of how to operate it. My NY strip arrived closer to a medium well, and it was a common theme around the table that our dinners were overcooked. A colleague of mine had added shrimp to his dinner, he commented that they had been cooked to the consistency of rubber. Although I was disappointed with my steak, the garlic mashed potato side was quite good. Once we had finished dinner we were given our check and after paying we were on our way out. Ironically, I feel that it was the only point in my experience at John & Nick's that our server was at her friendliest. I was thanked for my business by the friendly person at the door on my way out. Overall I wouldn't recommend John & Nick's. Some of the people in my group had made comments about signing them up for a "Restaurant Rescue"- type show. I really hope that my experience was just on an off night, but as a result I would be hard-pressed to make a return trip.

I've been to this place twice now. Both times it seems like it was their opening night because the staff seemed overwhelmed both times. The food is okay, but nothing to rave about, especially when you consider the prices. Last night we went for a birthday with 6 of us total. Only about half of our drink order made it to the table, we had to ask for the rest of the drinks twice before we got all of them. Refills had to be asked half the time. They knew they were struggling. (and this was a Monday night) Then it was time for the ticket and we waited for at least 20 mins bc they screwed up how they entered it into the system. They kept apologizing and finally wrote our totals on a piece of paper so we could hand them our money! A birthday, terrible service, no bill, and they could do nothing but say sorry?! Never once were we offered to discount any meals, gift card, nothing. I didn't expect a free meal by any means, but we were extremely patient (when we probably just should have got up and left). They will never have my business again.

Awful, terrible, absolutely horrible experience. Will never be back again. Food not delivered as ordered. Food couldn't be cooked properly even after returning it to the kitchen. Manger unreasonable and rude. Owner unwilling to come speak with us.

The food is delicious and the ambience is great, particularly in the bar area. Service is always painfully slow and they always appear frazzled and rushed. It is not unusual to have an incorrect order or missing item. Last time we were seated in the dining room next to the fish tank. The kitchen must be right behind the wall...it was so noisy back there it was practically laughable. I'm only giving the three stars because the steaks and salad bar really are that good. We will go back, but maybe we will try to sit in the bar area. Service is what brings customers back, if it was better this might be our go to dinner spot.

Have only been there once,we went on a recommendation from a friend. At first the service was slow, she explained that it was only her second week. She did brag that the bar had anything that I wanted. I ordered a double bourbon (Woodward Reserve) After a long wait she returned with nothing saying that the previous night (Saturday) had wiped them out of most spirits. I asked for a few others but was denied. I settled on the Cabernet from Penfold's. Wife said that the Martinis were very good.I ordered the large Prime Rib rare and seafood platter for the wife. A shrimp cocktail to start and it was real good. The salad bar satisfies for sure, everything is very fresh. The Prime Rib was prepared as requested,the serving was perfect size and it was delicious, juicey with a great crust and the horse radish was spectacular, I was very Pleased with the meat. The mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables lacked the luster that the Prime Rib had for sure. Bland. The seafood was said to be very tasty, however the serving was on the small size.. the place as a whole is very inviting and we are going back for sure. Maybe tonight. One thing that I did notice is that sound carries very well throughout the dining room,one loud talking gentelman can upset an otherwise peaceful evening. The service is kind of slow, but still good. Update 2/14//12. We went back this past Sunday evening around 6. Everything was amazing,The service was spot on ,very attentive and polite.I had the 16 oz Prime Rib,it was cooked perfectly.This time I went with the baked potato and shrimp scampi.The Scampi was very hot and tasty. The wife had a New York strip that she requested to be cooked Rare,It was. She said it was prepared to perfection. The salad bar was great too. We ordered wine rather than listen to what they didn't have at the bar. The selection of drinks is the only thing that I would change. We had an appetizer of Shrimp and Havarti cheese served with little garlic bread slices. I highly recommend it. I changed my first review from from 3 to 4 stars after Our latest trip. I should add that we defintley beat the rush. A great quiet evening.

The food was decent and the service was OK. The check for dinner for 2 with drinks was just under $70, with tip. I was very disappointed that my request to replace the bread and potatoes (or pasta) with a vegetable (my wife and I are lo-carbers) was denied unless I pay extra for the broccoli. Seems like they were nickle and dime-ing me. I won't go back.

I've eaten here twice now. The menu is pretty standard for a steakhouse. You are given the option of salad plus either potato salad or cottage cheese as a starter--which I think is odd. My husband and I both ordered the prime rib the first time and thought it was excellent. The service was a little lackluster. The second time we came several people in the group, including my husband, ordered prime rib and was very disappointed and complained it had no flavor. My steak was very, very good. The service was slow and made many errors in our orders. One in our group ordered a dessert which turned out to be a cheap, frozen solid ice cream bar out of a box that they simply drowned in whipped cream to make it look nice.

Ate here for the first time last night. Echoing the previous review, standard steakhouse menu, about $18 for a 12-ounce ribeye. The steak was well-prepared, but a little under-seasoned for my tastes. The prime rib was too rare, so consider ordering a notch up on the "scale of doneness". The inside of the restaurant is fancier than the strip-mall facade. Service was fine.
