This place was great! Home style cooking and friendly waitstaff. I'm gluten-free, and they were happy to answer my questions about ingredients. The beets in the salad bar were excellent and the waitress said they were homemade with pickling spices. I had broiled walleye that was yummy and my boyfriend had chicken parm. We really enjoyed this stop for dinner on our way to Des Moines. Right off the highway and lots of parking.

Very quaint, kind, and comfortable place. Walked in and felt at home. Loved the lunch box collection and vintage board games on display. Had the salad bar and soup. Satisfied. Ordered the fried Carp. Fish was good, but the breading was strangely limp. No crunch. Wonder if it was heated up after it had been previously fried? Had tater tots instead of fries. DIVINE! Wish I Could get those all the time instead of fries. We also had the cheeseburger. DELISH! I'd stop here again. Service is so friendly!

Great meat! Great prices! A little rough around the edges. Passing through on a cross country trip and would stop here again if I was local. Hot roast beef was delicious.

Excellent food. Excellent service. Excellent price. Yelp says they take credit cards... they do not. There is a gas station with an ATM nearby so make sure you hit it before you get there.

Want a killer breakfast for super cheap? This is your place. Close to I-80. Just don't bother with the coffee unless you are desperate -- it tastes like burnt popcorn. I had two eggs, toast, hash browns and three strips of bacon for $5.95. Can't beat that! The hash browns and bacon didn't blow me away, but the eggs and toast were excellent. Not much room to complain at that price. Waitresses were very nice and we didn't wait long. Oh, and they had slices of pie in the fridge! This one might be more like a 3.5 stars, but its better than a 3. If the prices hadn't been dirt cheap, I would have been more critical.

Have you ever stumbled across a small-town restaurant and realized you'd found a true hidden gem, a best-kept local secret just begging to be discovered by some food critic who would marvel that such a great restaurant could thrive outside a big city? Well, The Embers is not that place. BUT, I'll give it this: it's a good place for basic steakhouse-style fare. Came in to The Embers off the interstate on a Sunday night to numerous stares from the clientele, most of whom appeared to at least 70 years old. We definitely felt like the outsiders we were. But the staff was super nice. Broad menu, unless you're a vegetarian. Salad bar was pretty limited. I ordered one of the smaller steak dinners with baked potato and thought it was a good meal for the money. They have several pie & crisp choices for dessert, and these were delicious.

Seriously, you can't go wrong for breakfast here. Food is cheap and good. Everything was cooked well and with pride. They even turned on the fryer so one our guys could have mozzarella sticks

Small town food at its finest! Prices are good and the food is really good!! Definitely worth stopping here!

Very good food, friendly, clean, worth the stop! Slaw, burgers, baked pork tenderloin, all excellent.

We have stopped here several times. Each time we are totally happy with our meal. Last time we stopped, I had the best chicken philly I have ever had! My husband had the hot beef and he also said that it was the best he had ever had. It is a bummer that they don't take cards, but there is a sign on the door that states that. We will continue to eat here when we are in the area.

Good stop when passing through Avoca (just off I-80). Inexpensive, good food. Friendly staff. Americana food and decor.

Probably the best place in Avoca and really cheap but slow service if you have a group. I'm not a local though.....this place would probably get a 2 from me if it were in Dallas.
