I am confident in saying I have probably been to every Tasty Tacos restaurant in the Des Moines area. This location is no exception to the great local taco shop taste. The food here is better than any chain fast food taco place. This location isn't extremely busy, but it is far from being empty of customers. The staff usually keep to themselves so it is hard to say if they are friendly, but I have never had any issues with them. If I ever want good Tacos I come here instead of a fast food taco place.

Just as the name implies the tacos are very tasty, love the original flour taco( although it's more like an Indian fry bread taco than a traditional boarder food taco which is what I expected). The tostadas are very good so are the chips and guacamole. Be prepared if you get the cinnamon fried tortilla to get extra napkins. The refried beans were a pleasant surprise, I love that they actual refried beans and not the stuff out of a can. The last thing I must mention you go there for the food not the decor.

The name says it all, "Tasty Tacos". And they are indeed tasty. The corn tortillas are good, but the puffy flour tortillas are awesome. These tacos remind me more of the "Indian" tacos rather than the tacos I grew up with on the San Diego border. The flour tortillas resemble fried bread. They are fresh and delicious, as is their chips and guacamole. The tables & chairs may not be the most comfortable & the decor may border on tacky, but the hot, fresh, and fast food makes it all worthwhile. The staff is friendly. There is plenty of parking. And the food is certainly tasty!

Awesome. An Iowa staple. Flour steak tacos!!! Been going here since I was 8 years old... so yeah 25 years of experience at multiple locations. Always epic. Always perfect to order. Always worth it! Closed on Sunday cuz we all need a break

The Original Flour tacos are all I get here. They are simply supurb. However, it seems they keep increasing the prices of them. It is becoming a tad expensive to eat here and I find I don't as often. It is still fast food, and I think they may be forgetting this.

Ordered 2 regular tacos. They were filled with an abundance of meat, lettuce and cheese. Kudos as this was not dripping with grease at all!! The shell is fried but it makes it filling. Almost like a fry bread. Its really good. Got mine to go and its pretty messy (cheese all over) so be prepared. Again I was very happy nothing was soggy from grease. There was a line but it went quick. Too bad they dont have a drive through! I will stop again!

ordered cheese enchilada and pork enchilada which were supposed to have cheese inside. NO CHEESE INSIDE. the taco sauce had no spice to it. the flour taco shells were cold. the meat had no flavor. won't be back. Americans make better tacos. Indian fry bread is not what should be used for a tortilla!

This is a tough review because the tacos are good, but a few of us were disappointed by the sides. Next time, I would just stick with the tacos or try a burrito.

How can I put into words the phenomenon of Tasty Tacos? I'll do my best but I'm afraid I won't do them justice. Every location around the Des Moines metro, and there are many, are extremely consistent in the quality and taste of their food. I'm originally from Chicago but this is far and away the best taco I have ever had. One taste and you will be hooked. It's my favorite cheat meal when I want to reward myself. I literally have to exercise restraint not to eat there every day. They make their own hot sauce, taco shells and guac.

Came here with a friend. We had heard this was a great place and it was "local" (not a chain). The people that come here seem to like it. I ordered a chicken enchilada. It consisted of chicken chunks (big chunks) wrapped in flour tortilla, and lots of melted cheese. Sour cream and guacamole were extra. The tables had hot sauce to use. The hot sauce was pretty spicy. Just a little dribble is all you need. The food tasted "homey" like you are getting a dinner from Mom and Dad. But as another review said, lacked any type of seasoning. No room to park an RV unless you can get your RV into the Menards (I think it was Menards, or some other big box store) parking lot behind this restaurant. But, as I have seen in Des Moines, getting INTO a parking lot is dicey with an RV because of the narrow driving lanes you have to manuver through to get INTO a parking lot.

My family was traveling through the state and as taco aficionados we were compelled to stop because of all the great reviews. We were skeptical of excellent tacos in Iowa, and guess what? We were disappointed in the food. The taco ingredients were fresh but lacked any hint of seasoning. A previous review referred to 'subtle flavors' which we took to mean the food was mild vs. spicy. However, this wasn't mild, it was downright bland. My tastebuds appreciated the fresh lettuce and cheese, which should be a sign. The guacamole was previously described as fresh made, however I've tasted like the stuff bought frozen in the grocery store and defrosted. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing --- puréed avocado and a couple bits of pepper. The two stars are a reflection of the freshness of the base ingredients, otherwise I may have given it a one.

Try to hit a Tasty Tacos whenever you're around the Des Moines area and get the original flour tacos! They're SOOOO good! And don't forget the hot sauce! It's tasty and has just the right amount of heat. I'll be back! (Read like Arnold Schwarzenegger )

Order in advance and pick it up to go. It is usually ready when you arrive. Try the flour taco and flour nachos. Sort of pricey when you look at the ingredients used but it is good and a nice treat on occasion. I have always wondered why they do not do drive thru. They do not need to because the line is out the door at lunchtime and supper time. It would be nice to not have to get out of your car and wait in line which is why I order in advance and pick it up to go. Their hot sauce is good and I always pick up a pint when I am there. They have queso which I have not tried yet. They are a locally owned business who started with little and now have an empire. We will continue to frequent these establishments and we recommend you do the same. Staff busy but friendly. They try to get you through the line as quickly as they possibly can.

When this place opened in Ankeny it made my day! While I can only speak for the flour tacos, since that's all I get, they totally rock! If Heaven has tacos I'm sure this is what they'll taste like! The place is clean, the service is fast and there is plenty of parking. A GREAT place to stop and eat at for whatever reason. Their menu has a great selection, too. There is something for everyone, even the kiddos!

Well I really can not say that I believed all the hype my friends have for this place. After trying it today I think they were right on the mark. The Indian taco taco thing really works. I liked the subtle flavors in the meat and bread. A lot of people said they thought everything was bland, I think the fact that the ingredients were not overwhelming was what makes the food here so good. The enchiladas was a big hit for me the sauce on the tortilla and the mixture of beef and pinto beans. No grease how great is that. So if you do not enjoy the food here I am sorry. Simple is something's the winner.

Tasty Tacos is a great local business wtih several locations around Des Moines. The newest opened in Ankeny this summer, and we went on the first weekend we could. Expect the same menu items and the same low prices you'll find at the other Tasty Tacos locations, in a nice, clean, new building conveniently located on Delaware. The flour chips are my favorites and I would definitely recommend trying them, though I'm never very impressed with their guacamole. The enchiladas and tacos are very good; I prefer them with the "original" meat filling but I also like the bean and the steak. Tasty Tacos is not somewhere you want to sit and enjoy a night out - it's more like the local version of Taco Bell or Taco John's. It doesn't quite live up to my favorite cheap Mexican in Des Moines, Taco Casa, but the newest location is so close to my house, I'll definitely be back!

I've decided after 6 months of living in Iowa, I need to start writing reviews for transplants like me. Tasty tacos is better than Taco Bell because I assume the food is food fresh. It's edible but tasteless food. We tried the traditional, chicken, and bean tacos. The corn tacos are not traditional corn tortillas but fried hard shells. The beef did have some flavoring. I will be visiting another Tasty Taco while I live here. I have it two stars because the restaurant was clean and staff friendly enough.

Being a former Des Moinite, Tasty Tacos is one of the culinary delights that I miss. Haven't found any place that presents a taco quite like the Original version of the deep fried flour tortilla version. Finding myself in Ankeny recently, I had some time to kill, and ducked in to relive and old favorite. Alas, it did not disappoint. the thick flour torilla deep fried and stuffed with the taco fixings hit the spot. Even large eaters like me can usually be satisfied by the single helping. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so check of the photo, and try one for yourself....enough said. I did find the Ankeny store to be a little lacking in the ambiance, that the capitol square location offers. This one is more of a sterile cookie cutter establishment, but if the food is good, just sit outside!

BEST Tacos in Ankeny! Very efficient restaurant - they can move a lot of orders through in a short time so don't worry about the lines. It's just that good. Not a lot of seating area, so you might want to order to-go.

Yum! I love the shell on the Original tacos. It's like a fried, but still puffy and soft, thin pita...or at least something like that! Kind of a dive, but friendly staff, great prices and the food is a guilty pleasure for me. Always want to stop by when I'm in Des Moines area.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
