I was in Ankeny this past winter and went to On The Rocks (1810 SW White Birch Cr, Ankeny) shortly after they opened for business last December and was not at all disappointed with my experience. Most places that have "just opened" still haven't figured out how to do everything, but this place had it together. The wait staff was friendly and attentive even though the restaurant was busy. There was an Iowa basketball game going on that afternoon so the place we pretty into that. We figured service would be a little slack because of that but they were good about seeing to our needs. I ordered the "Croz Nest" Italian sausage sandwich and it was good. The best ever? Nope, but I ate all of it and was satisfied with the flavor. It wasn't too greasy and tasted like the sausage was homemade. I asked about the name and my waitress told me she thinks it was from the name of another restaurant that was owned by the same person that owns On the Rocks. I was happy with the nice-sized menu and the food. If you're into tap beers, this place has a lot of them. I didn't count the taps, but there must be at least fifty beers on tap, ranging from local microbrews to imports to good old American standbys. I didn't order any alcohol that day of my visit, but the prices seem reasonable considering. On the Rocks was a good dining experience overall. The food came out hot and fresh, the service was good and the atmosphere was relaxing and pleasant even on a busy Saturday afternoon. If you're in Ankeny, this is a great spot to grab a bite to eat, get a beer and watch a ballgame

Visited two Saturday evenings and both times the place was dead. I believe some locations are destined to fail; this place was Rookies, then 34's and now On The Clock... I'll start with the positive- the bar menu has a good offering and mixed well. The service was ok one of the visits, but needs improvement; example to follow. The food needs work, big time. The first visit was for drinks and a couple appetizers. Drinks were good. The cheese balls appetizer (curds basically) was average, menus hints otherwise. The bruschetta was horrible, the tomatoes were not fresh and were tart from marinade that tasted like old beer- yuck. When you point out that something tastes odd, "oh that's too bad" is not a customer first oriented reply. Not sure why we went for a second visit, but likely due to location and it being quiet to converse with friends. Again, drinks were good. All four sandwich orders were fails. 1. Lomito pork - was bland and overpowered by bun. 2. Crab Cake- was fishy tasting- I don't think he got sick... 3. Chicken something or other- had two scrawny asparagus twig with cream cheese like spread. 4. Shrimp- forgot what the issue was, but only recollect her not liking it and leaving half. The gist of it is they have an overwhelming offering on the menu and transfers to the kitchen. They need to cut about 75% and focus on select dishes that someone can do well, otherwise I'll be waiting for the next new restaurant to open in its location.

I really like this place. Haven't been to Ankeny in about 5 years and this place was recommended to me by some family friends. The place is pretty cool, happy hour prices are good and the food tasted great. Sausage sandwich was good enough to write a review. Plenty of space for big groups and good selection of beers on tap. I'm not a big fan on new ankeny, but I'll definitely make it back here sometime.

Well, the service was outstanding! I liked the new look of the place too but the rest was sub-par. I thought that they would be a true tapas restaurant and it really wasn't. It was bar food served in small portions. Greasy choices and all! If you're going to market yourselves with a niche menu, then you should at least try harder to serve some meals that are truly legit. Oh and the drink menu was ridiculous. Terrible wine choices and very few to pick from. When you're going to a tapas restaurant, you expect a good wine list for pairing with food. Good thing the waitress was so nice and on top of things or we might have cut our dining experience short!

We decided to try this new place or new to us. From FB photos it had potential, but disappointed. It's one thing to have to yell or talk really loud when at a bar, another when you have to do it while trying to eat. The appetizer, arugula dip & pita wedges was ok, tasted like some arugula & hummus with cheese on top. I ordered the Croz Nest Italian sandwich, it looked like a McRib, it was spicy but I could barely get past how it looked. The herb fries, soggy and disappointing. I recommend they visit Exile and sample their fries to appreciate what crisp, fresh and flavorful herb fries are like. A friend ordered Mac-n-cheese with chicken, she could only shrug her shoulders as feedback another person sampled it and his face had a look of "not sure what I just ate". A friend ordered the flatbread pizza with chorizo, corn, black beans and soft egg. Chorizo was very bold and dry, this explained the need for a soft egg. Another friend ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger, he ate because he paid for it. It's a small menu but it swings from scallops to wings. Well it's off my list and I won't go back. Service was ok but scattered. At times she was attentive and then she just disappeared. Better offerings elsewhere.
