I eat here regularly and have never been disappointed. From the outside this place looks like every other Mexican restaurant that we all know so well. What sets El Azteca apart is the service and food quality. The Tacos Carne Asada and Walter ' s special are awesome. I order one of those two each visit. You can order any drink as they have a full bar and coke products. We really like the wait staff as well. There is room for improvement. The salsa is just okay, and the corn chips are bland and typical. Fortunately, food delivery is really fast so you may not even finish one basket. Plenty or parking, it never seems too busy but Delaware is always busy in Ankeny during lunch rush.

Overall good food and good service!!! Food was out quickly and piping hot!! Burrito was good. Tamale was really good!! I really liked the red sauce. Chips and salsa was brought out almost immediately after being seated and chips were nice and warm. Needed a little salt but that was an easy fix. Salsa had a nice kick. Decent prices! And laid back atmosphere with friendly fast staff!! Not the best I have ever had but still very tasty!! More American style than I like but still good!!!

I have always been a huge fan of El Azteca in Ames, and now that I live in Des Moines, the closest location has to be Ankeny's version! Well it too, is top notch for that kind of Mexican food everyone craves every now and then! The cheaper, but still awesome kind, that goes down well with friends or family! The kind you are only eating one meal today, kind! Great complimentary chips and salsa's, multiple Mexican and American brews to choose from! Oh and those massive Margarita's! Yum, I like the frozen strawberry best! Lots of options for Vegans or veggie type folks! I usually go with the Veggie Fajitas with no sour cream and no cheese to make it vegan! The Fajitas are super huge and awesome and come out steaming just the way I like it! They also will hook you up with extra tortilla's if you need an extra one or two, which I guarantee you will, because they hook you up with tons of food! Beens, rice, little salad with guacamole! I love this place, you can tell it's been remolded in the last few years and feels very modern and upscale for this type of joint! I'm always running back to the border for more! Even if we are stuck in the middle of Iowa!

I've been here once and had a great experience. The food is standard Mexican restaurant quality and style. Nothing stood out too much about this place from other Mexican places, the staff was friendly and food was served fast and hot. Atmosphere is calm, crowd consisted mainly of older couples. Very nice and clean decor. Price is standard, pretty much the same as other Mexican restaurants.

I go here all the time. Their service is always friendly. Their food is always wonderful & delicious. Their drinks are great & tasty. We've had burritos, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and more. The salsavaries in spiciness. The service is speedy. The dining area is clean but the bathrooms aren't. I love this place and will be going back again & again.

The food is okay. The chips are pretty good but the salsa has an odd taste. Would go back again but not my first choice.

Tasty! I'll admit I used to frequent here years ago before I became "loyal" to Guadelajara. Recently my favorite Mexican restaurant in town has been less than stellar, so I came back to my first love. I was pleasantly surprised! Food is piping hot and just the right amount of American and just the right amount of authentic Mexican. 5 stars!!!!!!!!!!

Terrible food. It was worse than Taco Bell. The taco shells were the furthest from authentic shells they could be. Tasted like stale Otega, or whatever they're called, store bought brand. Asked for another one and it was the same. Ground beef was super barf! Won't ever eat here again. Terrible service to. In my opinion, I would head down the street to tasty tacos, about a 2 minute drive up the road. What a waste of $20...seriously, beware!

This place is OK. Chips and salsa were both average. Chicken fajitas... Large portion of average fajitas. Pretty big interior. Service was fast. I'd give it 3 stars.

Chile verde sauce was excellent, however, th pork itself was very chewed. The tortillas were mushy and not home made. The shrimp chipote was all liquid smoke no poblanos in site. Ok food

We've tried this place a couple of times. It's not as good as our favorite (El Rancherito in Quincy Illinois). But, it's pretty darned good. (It does cost about a dollar a person more than we'd like; but, inflation is a reality and supply-and-demand proves that they can charge as much as they do.)

Best Mexican in the Des Moines metro. Their salsa is awesome. Their Chile Verde is amazing. Carne Asada tacos are perfect. The beef in their quesadillas is the best I've ever had. Great service and fast.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
