When I moved to Ames in 1999 this what my go to spot for Chinese food! It was super close to my house and it was my first taste for this kinda fare! I grew up in a small town so I had never had Chinese food before! I know that sounds crazy but being vegetarian this was a life altering experience! I loved it! They always have had a great mixed veggie plate, also the tofu is great as well! Not as crispy as some but still has a good flavor! I always love the rice they serve here too, this is going to sound weird but it taste like the POPCORN BALLS my mom used to make at Halloween! Maybe it made me miss home or something! Anyway, it may not look like much on the outside and the bathrooms are not going to win any awards but the food is good!

No frills. Avoid the bathroom if you can. Thanks for sitting down- if you want to eat you Need to go to the counted and order. I was not too sure about this place but my friends wanted to meet there before we went to a concert- oh boy- it was kinda sketch I heard but the food was great- yeah I disagree. They food was okay- I don't think it tasted that great. and our group was 10 people but there was a huge gap in getting our food and for that I was annoyed. As my warm food got cold and my rice hardened he looked at me- I got the "Triple Delight" which I could only find 3 pieces of shrimp in- eh. They do have "doggy bags" but you need to beg for it - jk- well not really!

I like this place a lot and would rank it close to Chinese Homestyle Cooking in terms of Chinese places offered in Ames. Don't get the lunch buffet. It's cheap, but it's not fulfilling or good. There's only one bar with a very limited supply of meat-based and generic Chinese dishes. I would recommend just ordering entrees. The authentic Chinese menu is pretty good. I had the salt and pepper squid and it was an extremely large serving (bigger than Chinese Homestyle cooking's) They also give you a lot of rice. They seem to be the only place in Ames that serves Roast Duck as well. They also serve the classic stir fried tomato and egg chinese dish that only Little Taipei has too. I want to try those next. Make sure to bring cash if you don't intend on spending more than $10.

This restaurant is the only place in town that has Chinese Roast Duck on its menu, so naturally I had to stop by to learn more about their cuisine. The restaurant is decently lit, has a large interior with checkered floor, and large tables to seat groups and families. Their clientele is mostly college students, and they can get somewhat busy during peak hours but the venue is never packed. They offer a lunch buffet that didn't look particularly fresh, and carries an alternative menu for those looking for the authentic fare. On my first visit, the server asked me where I was from. Tired of answering these questions all my life, I blurted out, "Los Angeles" before naming other cities where I had lived. The server then asked, "what is your ethnicity?" It wasn't until I said something convincingly foreign that I was handed the alternative menu. This has already happened to me at several Chinese places in Iowa but the shock value doesn't seem to dissipate with time. From their all-Chinese menu, I managed to try the Roast Duck and Roast Pork Combination Plate ($13.99). Price was high for the value as the Roast Duck had decent flavor but wasn't as meaty as I would have liked. The Roast Pork was too fatty and the pork skin was not crispy at all. Additionally, the dipping sauce was frozen cold when it reached my table. The food just didn't taste very fresh here. I also had the chance to try their Hainan Chicken over Rice ($7). The rice wasn't seasoned and the chicken was bland and rubbery. The scallion sauce had decent consistency but was missing ginger. I crave for this dish from time to time but decided that I would make it at home instead of ordering from here. The best dish I have tried thus far was the Spicy Tripe ($12). It came with an abundance of trip stir fried with an assortment of red and green hot peppers. The dish was flavorful and very spicy, but I'm not convinced the combination of ingredients was worth the price. Aside from the questions about my ethnicity, service was generally friendly. They also sell moon cakes during the fall season for those who may be interested. With other options available in the area, I don't think I will be going back unless I'm desperately hankering for another episode of Roast Duck.

The saddest buffet I have ever seen. One table of food with no labels. The food was barely warm and not worth a second trip. Better for take out.

This place is okay, the food is okay, but I give it 3 stars because a big part of any experience to me is how clean a place is. And the workers, the cooks, all have clothes on that look like they haven't been washed in 10 years. Which matters, because these are the people making your food. The place looks really dirty and grimy. I wish they would clean up more, and then I would give them more stars.

I'm not saying the other reviewer is wrong considering the items ordered; however, I would say that particular items at this place stand up against some of the best in Ames. If you can remember to order the House Special Mie Fun (not on the menu, but they'll make it), Pork Chops in Peking Sauce, Baby Bok Choi with Chicken and their steamed whole fish -- you'll be a happy camper.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
