Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Best Mexican food in Ames hands down. The Waiting staff is consistently friendly and fast. Food portions are great and meals always come to your table hot. Free warm tortilla chips and salsa for your table, and they're good enough you could almost eat just them for your meal.

Margarita was awesome. Food was super average

I'm sucking down a great strawberry margarita. Maybe two. Loving the super nachos at reasonable prices. What's not to like?

I've always been a fan of El Azteca. The service is extremely great no matter if its busy. You can look at your empty glass of water then look away for 10 seconds and it seems to always be refilled. Same goes for the chips and salsa. My go to at any Mexican restaurant are fajitas. Their chile rellenos are also great though!

I'm a huge fan of El Azteca. Any time family comes to town, I always suggest it. Their salsa is super fresh and they don't stop bringing it as you run out. Their drinks are very strong, though a tad bit overpriced (I'd rather have a regular strength drink at a regular price). After visiting other mexican restaurants in some of my friends' hometowns, I originally thought their restaurants were bad but eventually came to realize that El Azteca is just really good! They may not be the MOST authentic mexican place but they are pretty delightful. The meat is well seasoned and just spicy enough to please everyone. I tend to add a little hot sauce or salsa to up the spicy though. I appreciate that their beans and rice taste fresh and not like they make one big batch for a week on end. The only points deducted is how quick everything comes. I barely have time to start my drink before my food is already at the table. This is great for a meal in a rush, but overall I prefer to be in a restaurant for 45 minutes to an hour to find it truly enjoyable.

Pretty decent food for quite low prices. The only drawback is you have to ask for the "hot" salsa and even that isn't quite up to what I'm used to from growing up in the south. Oh, also their drinks are quite pricey but man are those margaritas STRONG. A couple of those would probably knock me out for the night. Another bonus, the wait staff is AWESOME. Very friendly and VERY funny. And it doesn't hurt that every one of the wait staff is nice to look at. Fast food, fair prices, friendly staff, what's not to like?!

The margs here are great. It's usually busy, so make sure you get there early. The ONLY bummer about the place is that the chips they serve aren't salted. I highly recommend trying their queso!

Nice place, food ok for Mexican, margaritas not the best. Nice atmosphere and nice area.

Nice run of the mill Mexican food, and for Ames, it's quite good. The service is always great, and I don't think it's possible for food to come out quicker. Parking is limited, and if you hit it during a dinner or lunch rush, it's not unusual to have a 10 minute wait. Shrimp tacos are excellent, but then again, the carnitas is my personal go to menu item.

El Azteca is a fantastic Mexican restaurant in Somerset. Lunch prices are extremely affordable and of very high quality. The quesadilla and enchilada that I had were both very good, and didn't skimp on quantity despite being a lunch special. Service is incredibly friendly and quick, notably so. The servers are all excited to get your food, drinks, and are especially excited if you have a birthday. El Azteca doesn't skimp on alcohol when you order a drink, a nice change from a lot of other similar venues. All around the dining areas are TVs with sports on, and there are a number that focus exclusively on futbol and other more Hispanic sports. The reasonable prices, high quality of good, and great atmosphere all make El Azteca a great place to go for lunch, dinner, or drinks.

The service is always so bad. They are just rushing and don't bother to stay one second longer for your service. Slow service also. If you don't want to die hungry, then don't come here, though I love the large quantity of Mexican food.

We typically go to the Dayton Avenue location as it's closer to our house, but last time we decided to venture out and visit the Somerset location for a change. The restaurant is nice. The food is the same as the other location, which is to say that it's delicious! I even ordered something different. I have a tendency to always order enchiladas, but I got the arroz con pollo this time and it was terrific. Definitely something I'll order again. For some reason, the margaritas are better at the Somerset location, so they've got that going for them.

Not spectacular Mexican food, but the service is unbeatable and there are several excellent dishes.

I've never been to the Hyland location but I would say this is the best Mexican place you'll find in Ames. This location is a little more "classier" but still a place where you can wear sweats and not feel like a loser. Service seems to be consistent and it has yummy salsa and margaritas :) The main thing is that it gets really busy Thursday through Sunday so be prepared to wait.

After such high reviews, I'll admit I was looking forward to a very good meal. I am sorry I was disappointed. I ordered a combo plate of chile reiano, beef burrito, and an enchilada. The chile reiano was watery with very little cheese. It was a little over cooked and mushy, but thankfully the sauce masked that. The burrito tasted like it had filling from a can, and was not very memorable. The enchilada actually had promise, if not a little dry - which the sauce also helped to correct. The chips were crunchy, but bland - ah! Salsa to the rescue! This being a sit down, nice establishment, I was hoping for more flavor and creativity, but alas I could have saved my money and gotten the same thing at a Mexican drive through restaurant. However, they don't sing to you on your birthday, which was done twice while I was here. I'll save my money next time and forego the entertainment.

Best Mexican restaurant in town. I have eaten at the Dayton location and do not care for it. At that location they seem very pushy "wanting you to leave the second you're done." Every time I come here I get the Shrimp Tacos. Their Margaritas are pretty good too. This time I asked for the 48oz and was surprised by how big the glass was. The food is always hot and served fresh. You can expect your food within ten minutes for a table of 4. They also serves chips n salsa as soon as you sit down. I recommend the hotter salsa(cost you only though). The quality has never been a disappointment. If you go on a weekend you may have to wait, but the wait time is usually short. I generally eat here about once or twice a month!!

3 stars for food but zero for service. Good Mexican food is hard to find in Ames (and elsewhere in Iowa). "Pork carnitas" was bland as were the rice and beans. Quesadilla was okay. Guacamole was, well, just avocado. Chile relleno was cheesy and strangely greasy. Sopapilla and churros were delicious once they were found under mounds of uninspired whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Service? Don't expect good service from anyone other than YOUR waiter. Helpers and other waiters are not interested in pitching in to help each other so if your waiter is busy, you are out of luck. On our visit, our waiter was busy and other waiters were standing around the bar.

I've been here twice now and have yet to be disappointed. Not much to say except they are consistent, tasty, very well priced, courteous, and enjoyable. I shall return!

El Azteca is your standard tex-mex joint with loud uptempo Hispanic dance music trying to keep up with the speed of service. The Stange location is miles ahead of the S. Dayton location on all counts - it's clean, the ingredients are fresh and the food comes out piping hot! Since La Fuente went downhill, El Azteca In Somerset is definitely THE place to eat Mexican in Ames, and it shows; on a normal weekend night, expect to wait 30-45 minutes for a table, but feel free to use that time to sip a margarita at the bar in the lobby! My wife and I have not yet found anything we didn't enjoy, although the tortilla chips leave a bit to be desired; they can, however, be brought up a couple of notches by ordering the $3.50 bean dip - refried beans with queso blanco - yum!.

El Azteca is consistently a great meal at a good price. The service is quick and their chips and salsa are very good. Ames has many fine Mexican restaurants and I find this a favorite for lunch.

Good food, fast service and a good price this place has it all. By far the best mexican place in Ames.

I was very pleased from the start to the finish. The chips and salsa are tasty and the California burrito was huge and awesome! My kids loved the tacos and enchiladas as well. This will be a must visit. Place on my visits to Ames.
