Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I have always been a big fan of Pancheros but it seems over the last couple years the quality had went down. My main complaint is the meat quality. The last few times going to this location the steak has been dried out with a bunch of gristle in just about every bite. They need to raise the meat quality to chipotle levels. The place is always clean so that's a positive.

Love this place! Only 2 complaints: 1. No kids menu. 2. Since my child will only eat a quesadilla there, almost $7 for chicken, cheese, and tortilla is a bit crazy, but their burritos are Oh My Goodness! The people are always super nice...and they had red tortillas for Xmas Eve! Who does that? Amazing people, that's who! :D

I was always a Chipotle guy and never had Pancheros before until a group of coworkers wanted to eat there for lunch. I actually did not know what Pancheros had to offer until I walked in and realized "Oh this is like a Chipotle" Writing this review I have already been to this Pancheros multiple times because I enjoy it. The Ankeny location is the first one I've been to and I started doing here when they opened not too long ago. The best way I know how to describe it is that it has a more "Cooked" taste than Chipotle burritos. The Guac from Chipotle is far superior than any burrito place I've eaten at, including Pancheros. However, the Queso sauce from Pancheros is amazing. I get Queso in my burrito here instead of Guac. Now the Guac is not bad, I just dont find it as flavorful as Chipotle. The tortilla used here is freshly made as gives it that soft texture. This location is usually pretty busy during peak hours.. Price is pretty standard for build your burrito shops. Staff at this location has always been friendly, no issues.

You cannot beat Pancheros for their freshly pressed tortillas and chips/guacamole. I always order a cheese quesadilla and an extra plain tortilla with hot salsa...the best meal ever. My wife ordered a chicken burrito and she thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend Pancheros when visiting Altoona, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City or anywhere they are located.

From traveling in the Midwest, I have become a fan of the Taco John's. Panchero's still qualifies as "fast food," but I would put it one notch higher than Taco Johns. In fact, if you want a place to bring a "date," but you want "fast food" prices, I would bring a "date" here! I call this "fast food with class." It's a little pricier than Taco John's. It's mostly "ala carte." You "build your own" and adding stuff means "extra." There are some thngs that are NOT "extra," like sour cream, shredded cheese, peppers, corn salsa, and mild, medium, or hot sauce. The guacamole is "extra." I ordered two tacos for $4.95. I was "allowed" to have one be pork and one be chicken, no extra charge. They make their own tortillas there. Kind of fun to watch that! I also got the "extra queso" sauce at $1 extra. it is worth it to get that! Puts some "zip" in your dish. They had some "herbed rice" which looked delicious, but it didn't come with my selection. Oh, in their drink menu on the wall, they had "GOOD BEER $3" and "BAD BEER $3." I asked what the difference was. Basically, it was someone's idea of a joke..... I saw a TV on the wall, but no sound, so what was the point of that? If you come here in an RV, you would have to park in the Lowe's parking lot and walk over. Not bad. I came here on my little scooter.

Wow. I have never been to a more dirty restaurant in my life. Every single table had food, trays or used utensils on it. The only garbage was overflowing so much, the next booth over was being used for garbage. The drinks area was even covered in garbage. I even watched a "manager" looking person walk in the building and walked right by the overflowing trash and the "trash booth" and did nothing about it. An inspector would have a field day with this place... Not going here again.

So for this review I am going off 3 visits within a 2 week period. Ordering the same items all 3 times. I ate at different peaks of the day with each visit. 1st-during the week on a Monday at lunch 2nd-Friday at dinner 3rd-Sunday at lunch. Biased off these three visits I came to this conclusion. The ambiance of the restaurant is bright and open. There's plenty of seats and it's well laid out. The menu prices are pretty fair and affordable. They pride themselves with fresh made to order tortillas. Which they do. You order up front and they put your order together in a assembly line. Every time we came there was to many workers, not doing much and one person running around like a crazy person. No communication as to what's needed next. It caused a back up on orders each time. Each time we waited 10-15 in line to order. Service is slow and your forced to repeat yourself over and over again because again one person is doing everything while the others stare into space. Food options are burritos(steak, chicken, and veggie), quesadillas(cheese, chicken), tacos(shrimp during lent), salad, and a bowl(steak, chicken, veggie) for those who don't want the tortilla. For our experience I ordered a steak burrito, a cheese quesadilla, side of rice, chips and queso dip. Once you do get to the end you have a few drink options to go with your food. They offer beer, water, juice, milk, and coke products. The food itself was dead on each time. It had flavor and tasted pretty good. The meat was moist. The rice wasn't dried out. Overall it tasted great. Was it worth the wait? Depends on if your the waiting type.
