Ordered this as take out on a lazy-no-cook kind of night. Rice and beans were excellent, not dried out like sometimes happens with Mexican food. Enchiladas could have used more sauce. Overall, it was very good for Mexican in Iowa.

This is a solid Mexican restaurant with the standard fair. They don't do anything that taste bad but they don't do anything that blows your socks off. Would I drive all the way across town for it. No because I can get it at any other run of the mill Mexican restaurant. Would I eat at this place over the other Mexican restaurants in Altoona. Yes a thousand times YES! For one I have never been served, dry over cooked sitting in a steam table for two hours, rice here. For that I should probably give them four stars. I really enjoy their bean dip that's not just beans. Their chile Colorado is good would like a little more spice to it. All and all your standard quick, delicious and inexpensive Mexican food. On a side note I'm waiting for the first Mexican restaurant to step outside what has become the typical decor. Restaurants in Mexico don't look like Tammy Faye Bakker exploded inside the place...or do they?

A long time ago, some dear Mexican friends told me that one of the secrets to Mexican cooking is that the use of "tomato SAUCE" is an absolute NO NO! It's considered "cheating." Thus, I have now developed a finely tuned palate for whether or not salsa is made with fresh tomatoes or with tomato sauce. This place cheats and uses tomato sauce in their salsa. It's obvious. I ordered one of their "Speedy Gonzalez" lunches (chicken taco and chicken enchilada). Holy cow, I got it in 60 seconds, how did they do that? Do they have a Star Trek replicator? It was hot! And not microwave hot either. I can tell that difference, too! Microwave "hot" versus stove "hot" is not the same even if it's the same temperature. One interesting thing, on their "Speedy" lunches, they give you a choice between rice or beans. I liked that, as I do not like refried beans. The rice was average, typical of what you get in Mexican restaurants. Chicken taco and enchilada were typical, too. Nothing to shout about. Now, when I came in, about 12:30 PM, it wasn't crowded at all. But no one came to seat me. I had to wander around to find someone to figure out where to sit. Also, no one came to give my my check. Again, hardly anyone was in the restaurant. Someone seemed too busy talking Spanish on the phone to give me my check. I don't know Spanish but it sounded personal to me and not business. So, I walked myself up to the counter and the person talking Spanish on the phone had to figure out which meal was mine while talking Spanish on the phone. I agree with Adam P, don't drive all across town to go here, but if you are here, it will do in a pinch. Not much room to park the RV, and the entry way to the parking area would be dicey in an RV. I came here in a rental car.

Stumbled upon Centinela while visiting Prairie Meadows. Very pleased with Sunday lunch. Quick and tasty. I had Enchiladas Verdes, too much to finish when preceded by gratis chips and salsa. Leftovers were good enough to buy a bag of ice for to keep them chilled on the drive home.

Clean restaurant. Very friendly staff. Food was OK. Chips and Salsa were good and they kept the bowls full. I will likely visit again.

Pretty good Mexican restaurant. The service was friendly and fast. The chips and salsa were good. I ordered tacos carne asada. They were good. They were similar to a lot of the Mexican restaurants around the Des Moines area. The menu said you could get some green salsa upon request. It seemed like it was just puréed jalapeños. It wasn't anything special. The pico de gallo was really good. It wouldn't be a destination Mexican place. If I lived to Altoona, this would be my go to Mexican place. I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
