Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

I was really looking forward to going to a 4 star Chinese Restaurant. When I saw the prices on the menu, I was even more ecstatic. Super cheap prices with what looked like decent portions as I peeked at other patron's tables. I decided to go with their fried rice. It was good, nothing amazing. It wasn't too greasy and the taste was there. What threw me off was their cake noodles. It was unedible....and I rarely say that. I'm quite forgiving when it comes to cake noodles cuz it's unquestionably my favorite noodle dish. It was tough...yes I repeat tough! It might as well have been a super well-done steak. I had to eat like a shark, head swinging biting action. The flavor was ok, but the texture was definitely way off. The chicken atop the noodles were great. Obviously there were leftovers since it was so unpalatable. I thought maybe this was one of those dishes that taste better the next day. Oh boy was I wrong, now it was a pure rock that could not be cut. My cutco knife had a hard time cutting it! There was only one place for it now...in the rubbish can. I had such high hopes for this place, but if they can't make a simple cake noodle, then I just can't bear to look back.

A mound of food for $5... and good food, too. That's the price of the their lunch specials (not to be confused with the special lunch plate). You can choose from tofu, beef, or chicken with vegetables, ginger chicken & duck, or lemon chicken. It comes with white rice or noodles. I've tried almost all of these and they're all fabulous. But the lunch specials aren't the only good deals on the menu. All the menu items are reasonably priced and tasty. For $5 you can also get won ton soup or won ton mein... so good! And the won ton actually has meat in it. Not like some places where all you have is a whole lot of wrapper and a little nibble of meat. It's not the fanciest place, but the friendly staff, great prices, and delicious food make it more than worth it.

Our little Golf club does a regular dinner for the 4 wives. Our menu always includes the following: - Sea Bass filet w/ginger Onion (2x) - Pork with Eggplant (2x) - Chinese Chicken Salad (2x) - Brown Kau Yuk with Buns - Abalone with Mushrooms (2x) - Shrimp Canton - Boneless Minute Chicken with Cake Noodle - Walnut Shrimp - Rice All of the above for just over $100.00. We ordered the same thing at Wah Kung in Moanalua for $200.00. Everything was ONO. If you have not tried the Brown Kau Yuk you are missing out. Way better than the regular red one. Good food good prices...

Slurping up my delicious won ton mein, packed with well-sized pork-stuffed dumplings and thready wheat noodles (and a bloody steal at $5), I found it incredibly entertaining to watch a large table of eclectic elderly Waipahuans talk about Vegas and get drunk off a case of Bud Light they brought themselves. Long after my soup was gone, I sat there eavesdropping and chuckling to myself, sipping my second pot of black tea and occasionally gazing out the window to observe the shady people passing by. I must have looked like a terrible anomaly, alone and dressed as a city boy, people-watching in an old Chinese restaurant that smelled like very fresh raw meat and bones. (Visit Chinatown's O'ahu Market if you want a similar but more intense aroma.) Unfortunately, another visit to take out one of their six $4.75 lunch specials brought a tasteless stir-fry of chicken, broccoli, choi sum and celery that only a heavy dousing of soy sauce, mustard and white pepper could rectify. And even then it wasn't much improved. At least the bed of chow mein on which it sat soaked up my embellishments and made for a passable meal. Regardless, especially since my workplace is directly across the street, I'll be back again. Service is friendly. And it's frickin' CHEAP.

The quality of food has gone down hill. The ingredients taste and look old. The first pot of tea had very little leaves, it tasted like warm water. Ordered the wor gau gee mein. A lot of the vegetables looked old. Instead of gau gee, it came with won ton! The won ton was so mushy and tasted sour! Another stir fry dish that had bamboo shoots also tasted sour. I will not be coming back.

More like 3 1/2 stars. The lunch special price is hard to beat. I'd probably eat there again. My Chinese wife liked it, so what more can I say? If I really liked Chinese food, I'd probably rate it higher, but either way, no complaints from me. Well, maybe you'd probably not want to frequent this place at night. Just kidding. Kinda. Good meal for lunch for the price.

Honey. Walnut. Shrimp. That's all you'll ever need to know. (Seriously, look at the pictures. I've also put up the Chicken with Mixed Vegetables. EDIT: I forget to say how good the chicken was. I am notoriously picky when it comes to eating my veggies, but with this, I ate EVERYTHING. And I'm normally not a fan of bok choy, water chestnuts, and bamboo shoots, and this had all of that and more.) I have an intensely sick passion for this stuff. Jumbo shrimp, fried in a light, crisp coating, tossed in a not too heavy mayonnaisy sauce, topped with sweet, crunchy, honey-glazed walnuts, and a touch of sesame seeds. I shamelessly ordered this on a slightly regular basis, that as soon as I walked in the door, a worker would recognize me and smile as they ask, "Walnut shrimp?" (Now my dad is the one who picks it up, and they started to recognize him too =P) I'll admit, I've only had this dish at three other places, but I do think that they make it THE best here. Jade Garden [Waipio] had small shrimp. Eastern Garden [Westridge; now Makino Chaya] was almost as good, but much more expensive. P.F. Chang's [Downtown] adds honeydew melon, which is totally unnecessary, and they add the walnuts before the sauce, making them soggy as you eat your meal. My family and I have been coming here for years. The food is always consistently delicious, very reasonable priced, and has never given me any stomach (or other body parts) problems (which is a HUGE plus with Chinese food [well for me anyway]). There is a large printed sign on one of their windows, stating their lunch specials. It's been there for as long as I can remember, and has been $6.50 (or maybe $6.95, sorry not sure) for as long as I can remember. And the list is loooooooong! There's at least 15 choices on there, so you're bound to find something that will please even the pickiest palate. My mom even knows the manager Mike. He and his staff are friendly and work hard at making sure you're well taken care of. Mike is a manager who has not become those lazy, office, I'll-come-in-whenever-I-want-just-to-dictate-you kind of bosses. He has taken our order many times, and he is so good at it, he doesn't need to write anything down and knows all of his dishes by their appropriate numbers. If he's not being your server, he can be found in the corner, manning the ancient cash register. Seriously, it's probably older than your grandma and her momma. It looks like one of those from the old Western movies, where the buttons are like that of a typewriter and each number pops up on it own. It's actually kind of fun to watch. Just don't get freaked out by its location though. It's in the same strip as Elena's, on the end right across Jack in a Crack. Near the bus transit center and Waipahu library, it might look pretty sketchy (especially if you're a townie). So if you're going to eat in, try to bring a friend or two (or 20). If not, call in your order and pick it up 5 minutes after they say it's going to be ready. Walk in nonchalantly, take your food, walk out the door, run like hell to your car, and drive away like you're a druggie on the run on Cops. Hehe. I'm joking. It's not THAT scary. It is totally worth the anxiety attack =)

The food here is great. Were picking up some Super Bowl Gaugee. So good.

Prices are unreal. Lunch plate feeds two. Senior golfers meet for lunch and bring their beer. Food comes out quickly. Friendly staff

5 STAR - My favorite Chinese restaurant after finishing a round of golf on the Ewa Side. I always like to order the dinner plate for $6.99 which comes with all the basic favorites like fried rice, beef broccoli and noodles, red pork (kau yuk), sweet sour spare ribs, 1 piece crispy gau gee, 2 piece crispy won ton, 2 piece shrimp ala canton (you must ask for the red sweet and sour sauce). Mustard shoyu sauce is usually given on the side in the little plastic cup). The food taste great and exactly what it should taste like. Nothing fancy but the quality and quantity is there. I like to phone order my take outs so it is ready when I arrive. If not, you could be waiting a while. When we eat inside which is usually around 5-6pm weekdays, there is always ample parking and the place is not crowded. Service is quick and the staff is friendly. The atmosphere is old Chinese style and not too fancy. The bathroom is not too clean but it does not bother me. You can also buy beer from a liqueur store a few shops down and bring it in to enjoy with your meal. Better than going to a bar or Chili's after golfing and spending $25-30 a person for food and beers. Here if you order the dinner plate it would cost $6.99 plus walk in beer $5 for 3 green bottles = $11.99 plus whatever tip your leave for the servers. I give this place 5 STARs for one of Oahu's Cheap Eats!!!!
(5)John T.
I've eaten here about 4 or 5 times. This is a great restaurant for cheap, delicious eats. You cannot beat the price of the lunch special. My favorite is the cold ginger chicken. The place looks like it hasn't been renovated since the 80s but who cares when the food is so cheap and filling. My only other complaint is that one time, I waited about 7 or 8 minutes for someone to take my order, and eventually just left and went to Arby's.
(4)Marion W.
What can I say...CHEAP EATS!! The food tastes like good Hawaiian style Chinese food. The portions are average size, but the price is so much less. We ordered the dinner for three and couldn't even eat 1/2 of it. Good place to go and relax on days when you just don't feel like cooking and you don't want to spend a fortune.
(4)Ka'ipolani G.
Yummy and no damage to your wallet is what I like about here. You can get a lunch plate for $4.75 from 10am-2pm and for $5.75 anytime after that. Where else can you get a good deal like that? Service not that great, but the food is good!
(4)Amy D.
Service here was excellent, prices are good, portions are well sized, bordering on large. The vegetable dishes we had here were the most enjoyable, the meat dishes were average among other places we'd been, and the noodles and rice were a little on the boring (but generously portioned) side. Would go back if I was in the area, but wouldn't go out of my way for it.
(3)Rebecca S.
Yesterday was our 2nd visit. The staff is very friendly and efficient. The food is excellant! One problem is the place is dirty. The floor looked as if it hadn't been mopped in years and the ladies room was a disaster. While going shi shi in the ladies there was a roach bigger than my fist on his last legs near the drain. Fortunately I am not squeamish but it certainly is not a great advertisement for cleanliness. My snobby sister on the Mainland would have a heart attack if she had to use the ladies.
(4)Cameron M.
So I've eaten here since elementary since my grandmas house used to be right up the street. Needless to say I've eaten here alot. But I'll do a review if my most recent visit which was during lunch hour with a friend. The atmosphere is old and smells but I love it. I prefer hole in the walls. They have a lunch menu that's starts at 11am and ends at 2pm. There's a good range of dishes all for $4.68. Yes it's that cheap even in this bad economy. Oh and did I mention it's pretty good as well. I ordered the oyster sauce chicken plate and my friend got the beef w/ broccoli with fried rice. The oyster sauce chicken was great. Good amounts of sauce and chicken. The plate was pretty much filled. No empty spots and it's no small plate my friend. My friends beef with broccoli looked great with lots of green and beef. Food here is cheap and good that won't disappoint. The owner mike is really nice too and tends to "hook up" regular customers like myself. If you're looking for a cheap, affordable, hole in the wall Chinese joint in Waipahu or the leeward side for that matter I'd definitely recommend you come here.
(4)Justin S.
Garbage. Food was old, dry and seemed fake.
(1)Marlon I.
The Food Is really great here. Good Service. Other than that, The place could get some renovations, and remodeling. I've been told this restaurant is really old. The Men's Bathroom, is DIRTY. They gotta clean it. It reminds me of the bathroom in the movie "Saw". Ughhh. The Place needs remodeling, but the food is great! ;D
(4)Lorna G.
This is our go to ,wanna eat cheap, fast,Chinese restaurant. Foods usually decent. And did I say cheap! Only thing confusing is we've been coming here 6 yrs and for some reason the owners acts like he's never seen us before. Huh!
(3)Lily B.
Wong Kung is located in Waipahu... along a strip of other establishments and behind Jack in the Box. The restaurant itself is fairly large. There are many tables and the staff is always pleasant and friendly. My boyfriend RAVES about the roast duck here. It comes with some sort of 'gravy-ish' type of sauce over it. I don't care for roast duck so I can't confirm his praise but this is the one place he likes to eat roast duck from so it must be good! yelp.com/user_local_phot… We've tried other items... chow mein, fried rice, soups, etc... and all the items are pretty good! I must admit... Chinese food isn't my favorite thing to eat but I do enjoy the food from here. The prices are VERY reasonable... especially the lunch specials! I can't remember the prices off hand but I know that I've bought lunch here for my BF and his co-workers before and a plate lunch with roast duck is only like $4 something?? And the portions are generous! This is the house special chow mein: yelp.com/user_local_phot… Give em a try... I'd recommend it! :)

First time, I came here w my parents. Their food was yummy & I thought this was a decent Chinese resturant. Second & third time around? NEVER AGAIN. We found hair in our noddles & a roach in one our dish. & lastly, their bathroom is very disgusting.

Had a dinner party to attend here, seems a bit small but good for small families, not comfortable for a party of 50. The food though was delicious, we had a 9 course meal consisting of chinese chix salad, abalone soup, fries rice, shrimp canton, roast duck, beef vegetables, and some other dishes I cant remember. Though my glass of water was always near empty, the food was good. I think they should have hired or brought in more help for that night.
(3)Derek R.
I've been going here since the early 1970's when they were at their original location at the now napa store across the street. michael is an awesome host! some of dah winnaz: soft fried gau gee min, walnut shrimp, sweet sour pork, abalone soup, crispy chicken, lean kau yuk w/ bun, shrimp canton, sweet sour spare rib no forget dah chinese new year: gai & gau are the best! no can go wrong! :D
(5)Dean H.
Supa CHEAP lunch specials and supa expensive school lunches make this place a no brainer. The only hard part is getting there and back to work in my allotted 30 minutes. Sigh, no go... The food here is pretty tasty and the workers are very friendly. The parking can be a bit of a bear since there is a bunch of places in this little strip mall but it is well worth it for a good, cheap, and fast chinese lunch. I usually order the wat wun tun mein (gravy style) and it is a hands down win. The ambiance is the normal chinese food restaurant and that is AOK with me. Really, what else do you want from a chinese food place? I love me some Wong Kung....go get yourself a plate! 051/365 takeoutchinese yelp challenge!
(4)Deena T.
Good stuff! The hubs had the oyster sauce chicken cake noodle ($4.75 + $1.25 extra for cake noodle) and I had the duck with ginger chicken and rice ($4.75). Tasty duck. Tasty ginger chicken. Great prices. No frills. Kinda low rent neighborhood, but well worth the drive.
(4)Jamie D.
Ok, so I should have turned around becuase of the undesirable smell when we first walked in, but I thought maybe, the food is awesomely worth it, based on the yelp reviews and high marks. Boy was I wrong!! The service was fine and fast, but overall the food was just executed all wrong. 1. Our tea was not hot but luke warm . 2. The food came out in less than 5 minutes-great, but surprisingly not piping hot!!! 3. The oyster chicken tasted somewhat old, like its been in the fridge and then deep fried for a few minutes. The sauce on it was also not hot and just warm, which made it even worse. 4. The honey walnut shrimp was decent, but something was off about the walnuts and its taste- not sure how to describe it, but it was just off somehow. 5. The steam rice- was not steaming hot and tasted almost like a day old when its hard and dry instead of hot and fluffy. I mean- really, how can you go wrong with rice!!!! Needless to say that I will not be returning.
(1)Jade N.
My family normally orders food here...Michael is pretty cool. There was a couple of times he came to also deliver it to our home...I think I was not suppose to say that because they don't normally deliver. LOL. Love this Chinese food place. :)
(5)Arthur P.
When was the last time you ate out for lunch and spent less than $5.00? Cannot remember yeah... Nowadays that's unheard of. But believe me people, there are still places out there where you can get decent cheap eats. Wong Kung is one of them. They have a daily lunch special menu where you can choose from Lemon Chicken, Oyster Sauce Chicken, Ginger Chicken & Roast Duck, Broccoli & Beef, Mixed Vegetables & pork, hold on let me catch my breath... Eggplant, Tofu Vegetable, and Ginger Chicken & Charsiu. The lunch specials cost only $4.75 ($4.98 with tax). This price is only good from 10am-2pm. Outside those hours it's regualr price. You can choose to have it with noodles or rice. You can also get it with fried rice or cake noodles for $1.50 more or so. The food taste and quality is good, but nothing special. What makes this place special is the prices. Can't go wrong.
(4)Tom S.
looks shady on the outside as well as the inside. Mostly only see old people dining on the inside. Inside looks quite dirty/disgusting. ordered takeout plates a couple times and it was not very good, I'd much rather order from L&L's.
(1)Manny B.
Ordered the tofu with vegetables and was quite decent. This restaurant seems to offer fair value for money and judging from the pictures, I would really like to try the shrimp with walnuts. Yum! Owner was kind of friendly. They need to work on the cleanliness of the restroom though - what do you expect from a resto that offers $4.75 meals? Just enjoy the food.
(4)tennille w.
Enjoyed the shrimp fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. My only regret? That there is no microwave in my hotel room to reheat the abundance of leftovers from tonights meal. It was delicious. Ambiance is very much 'hole in the wall' but I didn't mind. Oh, but avoid the bathroom at this establishment....it leaves much to be desired. And, here's something I've never seen before. Its BYOB and I'm not talking about a fancy bottle of wine. Folks bring big coolers, on wheels, filled with case(s) of beer and put em down all thru the meal.
(5)Neichan Y.
Gosh it's been over 10yrs of good Chinese food my family and I enjoyed eating. The amount of food you get is huge for the price. And the freshness of the veggies superb. If I could I would eat there everyday.
(5)Chad H.
One of my favorite Chinese restaurant to take out from. I'm a soup and fish guy, so this place is perfect for me. Hot & Sour soup, egg flower soup and steamed sea bass w/ ginger shoyu are AWSOME!
(4)Jon B.
Prices alone were worth the trip. Wish all of the dishes were up to par. Roast duck was not fresh, so were the noodles for the crispy gau gee. Sizzling sirloin was good, so were the beef broccoli, and seafood broccoli.
(3)willey k.
Need a platter of Noodles? $14 give's you enough to feed 20! Chow fun or fried noodles! I'll be there for mines on NYE 2010!
(4)Kathleen A.
I love this place. It's a typical Chinese restaurant so don't expect a grade A+++ experience cause hey, you get cheap eats and great Chinese food so why even complain? The $4.75 lunch and $6.75 dinner specials are a steal, especially because I work minimum wage and don't have time to cook for myself. The owner is incredibly nice and friendly too!
(5)Tina K.
I had lunch here today with my mother in law and we waited almost 15 minutes for someone to just notice us that we were ready to place our order. Everyone is all over the place and not organized. Theres a lady that cleans and just looks at us, but when other come in she takes there orders. This place may serve good food and cheap but they have THE WORSR CUSTOMER SERVICE IVE EVER EXPERIENCED. Get your damn workers trained or find people that dont favor their own race.
(1)Vincent T.
Pretty much your average neighborhood chop suey. The owner Michael is a good friend but sometimes the food is inconsistent. Some days are worse than others depending who the cook is. Very run of the mill, average Chinese.
(3)Bernadeth A.
Food was good but service was terrible. The waitress basically threw the menus on the table and gave my boyfriend and I water. She didn't greet us, nothing. The second waitress was a little rude, even to the couple sitting on the booth. She yelled at them when they said that their order was wrong. She kept repeating "you said one dinner and one lunch plate." Even if the customer was wrong, you shouldn't stand there & argue with them. My 2 stars is for the food, 0 stars for the service.
(2)Debrah D.
My in-law's family's go to place for Chinese food and for dinner parties. We come here at least seven times a year. My family has been dining and doing take outs from this place since I could remember. The owner is always there and he's always polite and friendly. The food is good. We tend to order the same dishes over and over again and we enjoy it everytime. If you are dining in, you may need to remind the servers to refill and for saucers but it's mostly because business has picked up, and there's usually just one server and the owner helping customers. Oh and for you drinkers, it's BYOB. Those celebrating birthdays can bring your own cakes and little paperplates. They're usually cool about letting us use more utensils and their knife to cut the cake.
(5)Emolyn O.
If you want Chinese food this is the best place to go to. We always order their ginger chicken, shrimp canton, minute chicken and stuffed eggplant. Always hits the spot.
(5)Jordan K.
Although the food is cheap. This place is absolutely disgusting. Dirty water cups, half washed utensils and the bathrooms are horrid. We went yesterday and there was a Roach on our buns!!! You would expect an apology or at least a little something off the bill but we got none of that. The only thing this place has going for it is the cheap price which is probably the only reason is has customers still. Do they even have the GREEN PASS sign on the door?! Cuz I doubt they would pass!
(1)Teena L.
I love love this place!!! Good food, good price & good service!!! Michael is always friendly and very accommodating.
(5)Derek P.
This review is long overdue. I am a new contributor to Yelp, but will now begin this journey. There are places where we visit in our daily lives that are true GEMS but at times are not realized because of our own inattention. ATTENTION! This is what makes Wong Kung such a gem. I have been eating here for at least 10 years, perhaps more. Details make a difference. Observe their lunch specials...detailed menu with THE best value in Waipahu! In other words...WHAT A BARGAIN!!! GREAT meals served here, I cannot recall EVER being disappointed here. Above all, their attention to the details and great tasting food is what has me returning. Tonight for the first time I ordered a take out out meal with cake noodles. Elsewhere i would arrive home with SOGGY cake noodles. Tonight, cake noodles in a separate package, so I can add jt & still enjoy the desired "crunch"! This is just one detail I speak about regarding quality & attention that is why Wong Kung is my Favorite chinese restaurant!
(5)Mich S.
My parents love coming to this place so did the rest of our ohanas .My dad loved their seaweed soup, my mom love their ginger chicken. For me I love eating their Chinese chicken salads. All of us have been coming here to eat for years. Micheal who took over his parents place is a dear friend to my parents. They have a friendly staff, cozy place to eat,& during graduation seasons Wong Kong do open late for parties. This place brings nostalgic memories for me & my ohanas.
(5)Lynnell A.
My family and I have been going here for decades. The owner and previous owners literally saw my son grow up. From a twinkle in his mother's eye to a 20-year-old young man. There are other Chinese restaurants in Waipahu, but our family have been loyal to Wong Kung's, and wouldn't even think of going to another Chinese restaurant within a 20 mile radius. This is your typical family style Chinese restaurant that serves the typical local Chinese food. I'm sure when you come here, you'll look at the decor, see that the menu has the same thing that you'd find at any local Chinese restaurant and taste their food and say, "Hmm, nothing special". However, you'll find that the waitresses are friendly, attentive, and sweet. Michael, the owner/general manager is easy to chat with and just an all around friendly guy. But be observant, you'll see that there are lots of take out orders and Michael, the general manager will greet his customers by name or joke around with them. IMHO, this is what separates him from all the other places. Every Chinese New Year, they make Jai, and I love it! I've never had Jai at other places, so I wouldn't know how it compares. A few of my family favorites for parties: - gon lo mein, chinese chicken salad, beef broccoli, seafood vegetable, fried rice, oyster sauce chicken When dining in/take out: - dinner plate, soft won ton min, beef broccoli, seafood casserole, chilean sea bass with black bean sauce (i haven't seen it on the board lately though), honey walnut shrimp (or something like that ... I always mess up on the food, but they always seem to know what I'm talking about), stuffed duck (my son fave), peking duck, cashew chicken. They also have a lunch plate special where they have a few lunch plates for only $4.75. Can you imagine that? That's less than fast food "value" meals!!
