I only come here once in a blue moon if I have to go to Waipahu for my job. Kristen's has a wide array of plate lunch choices such as beef stew, curry, chicken katsu, etc. and specials of the day like ono, ahi and chopped steak. The prices are reasonable, and like any other plate lunch you get two scoops of rice and mac salad. The only bummer is if you want to substitute tossed salad, they make you pay extra. Most other places don't do that. Another bummer is the prices of some of the specials. Yesterday we went here and my friend wanted the ahi katsu. The cashier warned him that it was $15.00. Fifteen dollars for a plate lunch? Seriously? I looked at a lady sitting down eating ahi katsu and it was so small. Rip off. I got the chopped steak. It was a bit salty, and could've used more onions. Instead it had other filler veggies that are gross to me, such as celery. The portions were smaller than what it used to be too. There is also a menu of pastas such as clams with white sauce, bolognese, marinara, etc. Looks good and I may try it one day. Parking is usually available in the little strip mall, but sometimes during lunch hours it is full. Overall it is mediocre.

Three stars. Plate lunches galore. Plenty selections. Kristen's used to be five stars, but from my experience, the taste has gone down from before. Albeit, they still have good prices and pretty good quantity on the plate lunches.

This little dive of a diner sits in the middle of Waipahu in a little strip mall across from Times Supermarket. I love this place because its just good old local food made just right. L&L is popular and all but it is also usually run by people who haven't grown up here and the food just isn't the same. Luckily Waipahu is just full of places with great local food with a taste that I've grown up with. My absolute favorite is the Pastele Stew (with gandule rice!). They have it as a special on Fridays and I just can't get enough. Enchilada specials on Friday are also really winner. Still have yet to try a plate lunch that has disappointed. Portions are plentiful and prices are modest. Even their breakfast stuff I've tried has been very pleasing! I know with Rocky's and Tanioka's, etc. in Waipahu it can be difficult to make the choice to eat, but definitely try if you're craving a good plate lunch, especially if it's Friday :D

Absolutely love the food here , prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. I have not dined in I always take out and they have never messed up my order. Sometimes order times vary depending on how busy it gets, but they do their best to get it out as fast as possible.

So I've been here a few times now, and they seem to run out of thing pretty quickly. But I guess they only make enough to reasure good quality, and you gotta respect that of them. Other then that I must say they have some pretty dam good food, my wife got a ago marsh for about 8 bucks and I got a pastele stew. Which was both awesome. While waiting for my food did get to chat with the owner who was very polite, and had mentioned that they also have two lunch trucks. One in halawa and one in cam. Industrial which I will definitely be looking foward to trying. I am definitely a big fan of this place and will most definitely be coming back.

I went here from work with a few friends and got the Spicy Katsu. I ordered it with the sauce on the side cause I was "skurred" it might be too spicy... but that was a mistake. It was pretty mild (maybe too mild) and would have been better if I just ordered it on the katsu from the get go... which might've bumped me up to 4 stars. I'll try it that way next time. My friends ordered the combos for just a little more, but it seemed like they got the same amount of food. My katsu came with 2 pretty nice size portions of chicken, while their combos came with one chicken and one piece hamburger steak or whatever. Basically, you pay extra for the variety, not the amount... which I guess is OK. But good to know. The service was at least 4 stars. The people were really nice. They also cater, and I bet it's pretty good. Also, no fountain drinks here. They only had cans and bottles. Overall, not bad at all. It deserves another shot.

This 5 star rating is purely for their roast pork plate lunch. Roast pork is my go to choice for any plate lunch place and the roast pork at Kristen's Kitchen is the best I've had on the island. Hands down, not even close. Friggin' ono! And for under $8 for a portion size you'll never be able to finish, it's an awesome value.

Take out review Parking: The lot out front has a lot of parking. Service: Easy to call in an order but they may run out of popular items. Food: Though they are a plate lunch place, they stand out a little by some of the interesting dishes on their menu. I tried their peppercorn mayo sauce on baked ahi on a bed of cabbage (or was it mahi, I can't recall now) and was surprised at how much pepper they used. It gave the dish a strong flavor profile that I wasn't expecting. I usually don't enjoy cooked fish as much as raw fish but their sauce made the meal. I'm not a fan of mac salad so I can't comment on it. They gave enough rice to go with the protein so that was good. Verdict: For the fair price, meal size, and flavorful food, I give this place a 3. It's hard for local style food or diners to impress but I liked how they put together some interesting dishes to choose from rather than only having your average meat, rice, and veggies options.

I can finally give a place 5-stars. My fave is the spaghetti. It's the best i've eaten and I just love it. They give a hearty portion with garlic bread and tossed salad. I love Italian food, but who would have thunk that a drive inn in Waipahu would be making the best one? It's done just right. I eat at Auntie Pasto's due a friend treating me there all the time but to me it's just Meh at AP's and too acidic and too much of rosemary or basil-ie for me; I burp it up for hours. Seriously. But Kristen's makes it just right. I also like their corn chowder, it really is home made. Now I make a mean chowder that takes me over nearly 2 hours to make from a now secret recipe given to me. I judge all chowder against mines and though mines will always be #1 with me, Kristen's is a very close #2. It's just I use a lot of rich and fattening ingredients that it would be too costly to make commercially. They do shut down their burners from I think 2 or 3 pm to 5 pm, so the full menu is not available but a much shorter one. They also have a lunch wagon by the Halawa Quarantine station and they offer different things from the restaurant. But it's all awesome. They close @ 7 p.m. and on Sundays.

Wife had spam eggs on fried rice...spam was thick and fried just right. Always had a good breakfast every time I come here. PS...Steak and Mushroom plate now @ $7.50...whew!!!

#39/365 Overall 2.5 (price 2 and food 3). Finally ate here after passing it by many times and seeing it on the news on "cheap eats." My mom was picking up food so I didnt really know what their menu was. I knew I wanted something chicken so when she read what they had and named chicken cutlet then thats what I wanted. I got the mini for $5.25 + tax. When I got my food I was SUPER surprised at how TINY it was! o_O. Whats different is that their mini plates come in a rectangular Styrofoam so right there you can see that portions will be small. It comes with 1 scoop each of rice and mac salad AND 1 VERY SMALL portion of the main entree (7 small pieces of chicken to be exact) w/ their gravy on top. The mac salad was pretty good, one of the best i've tasted as their not to "mayo-y". The cutlet and gravy is alright; good but nothing spectacular. My mom and sister even said that the portions were so small for the price! Overall, i'd like to give them another try but dannggg price to quantity ratio...hmph.

From the moment we walked in, it was just a warm inviting feeling. the girl at the register was very nice and friendly. We stood at the counter going over their menu boards and she started suggesting what was popular and asked if if we'd been there before. Once we told her it was our first time, she was very good about describing things on the menu. We made our choices: my husband heard about their stuffed ahi lunch plate at work and has been waiting to try it. He finally had it today. Cost $8.95, reasonable since the fish portion was pretty big. Came with rice and either mac or tossed salad and a lemon wedge. He will definitely be back again for the same dish. I had the basic breakfast for $4.50, I got fried rice, 3 pieces bacon and 2 eggs. Not bad at all. My eggs were made perfectly! I like over medium with NO runny whites. I almost told the girl taking my order to please make sure the eggs had no runny whites, but I figured I'd see if the cook could get it right, and he sure did! Bacon was crispy just how I like it too! As we were sitting and eating our food, I kept scoping out their menu and mentioning how I'd like to try their Kristen's special omelette, fresh spinach and mushrooms with ground beef. Their girl must have overheard me and had the cook make one just so I could sample it! Now that was nothing short of spectacular customer service! Even as we walked out of the restaurant, the cook took the time to look out and thank us. Granted we were only one of two parties in the place (they had just opened an hour earlier and they did have more people coming in for take out orders), it was still great experience all together. We were given a take out menu and suggested to call in orders during lunch time, guess that's their busiest time. They also have 2 lunch wagons that are in Halawa and Campbell areas, that she mentioned sells out of items quickly. Their food prices seem to be very reasonable and we would definitely recommend you try this place! CASH ONLY

Had the Kim Chee Fried Rice with Teri Beef and was ono! A plate with a mountain of fried rice mixed with kim chee, spam, egg, fish cake and topped off with a layer of grilled teri-beef and a scoop of mac salad! If you check this place out, you gotta try this plate. Also their Spaghetti menu is highly recommended.

Been here a few times with my co-workers for lunch. We always call in our order beforehand to avoid the lunch rush and then eat-in when we get there. So far everything has been pretty tasty. I've tried the pastele stew, hamburger steak, and fried poke bowl to name a few. The hamburger steak was my favorite of all. Lots of gravy, onions, and good sized beef patties, even in a mini. You can also opt for tossed salad instead of the usual mac salad. They also have a variety of desserts which I have yet to try since I'm afraid I'll fall asleep when I get back to work, but it looks good. Parking can be limited and if you come during lunch (like between 12p - 1p) there could be a line and a bit of a wait. My tip would be to all in your order ahead of time so it's ready when you get there. Also, it's cash only!

First time eating here. I ordered the Kristen's special omelette (spinach, mushrooms, n ground beef). It was ok, not the greatest. I rather have bacon in it than ground beef. I probably won't eat it again. I only came Here because it was the closes that my husband saw. My husband ordered 3 eggs with luncheon meat. His and my eggs was lacking taste even with a dash of soy sauce. I gave this place a 4 star because although the food was ok, the customer service was warming. The Aunty working during the morning shift was very nice.
