9/5/08: Old school japanese and local food restaurant. I grabbed lunch with a co-worker today, tried their pork teriyaki served as a set (with miso soup, pickled vegetables and salad. Restaurant was packed with locals, no tourists. Wide menu selection, limited parking available in front. Don't come with high expectations looking for a high end restaurant and you'll do just fine! This place will be on the list of lunch places-

Tried this restaurant because of its 4 star rating. What a disappointment. While the miso soup was good, my grilled ahi was overcooked and very dry. The veggie tempura had a few chunks of batter -- mostly falling off. But the worst part of the evening was the employee who vigorously swept the entire restaurant floor while customers dined. Nothing like a fresh coating of dust on your dinner. Sum bum yuk. Won't be returning to Archie's.

A nice hole-in-the wall style restaurant. A blend of Asian, Hawaiian, and American cuisine. The decor reminded me of the 70s with the neon green and orange color scheme but that just added to the appeal. My wife had one of the udon noodle dishes while I had the Loco Moco. We had teriyaki beef for a appetizer. The loco moco, which consist of white rice with gravy, hamburger patties (although it was more like Salisbury steak) grilled onions, and a egg, sounded good. However after a few bites, the constant gravy taste got old. I didn't try any of my wife's dish, but the Teriyaki Beef was outstanding! It was crispy and delicious. The prices were very cheap! I would definitely come back, but probably get something different. The parking lot is very small and the restaurant itself is easy to miss.

This is strictly for the food as someone at the office picked it up for me so I have no idea where this place is or what it looks like. I had the veal cutlet, where have you ever seen veal offered as a plate lunch? That in itself deserves the four stars, plus it was plentiful and tasted good. Came with a nice tasting brown gravey, big scoop of rice and a pretty decent mac salad.

This place has been around forever, and the interior hasn't been changed. It's definitely an interesting interior, with aquariums without water or fish and vinyl seating. But they have decent Japanese food and the prices aren't too bad. The last time I was there, I ordered the Oyako Don. This time it seemed to not have as much taste as last time and not too much sauce for my rice. So I asked the waiter if I could have some extra sauce and he said there wasn't any. So I asked for some Teriyaki sauce. He came back saying he could give me some but the cook (owner?) was going to charge me extra for it. I said never mind and put shoyu on instead. A few minutes later, the waiter came back with some Teri sauce, saying he had to sneak it to me. Um, okay. Anyway, the Teri sauce made it taste good enough to finish. Pretty cheap place, ambiance is interesting, food is decent enough.

So this past Tuesday I finally made it to Archies in Wailuku. Thanks to my Yelp buddy Michelle S. for posting, otherwise I would not have known about this place. Folks, if you're looking for an elegant five star restaurant with beautiful décor' & you want to impress a 1st time date, then this is NOT the place to go. But if you're looking for some old skool, local kine dining........then BINGO! You found the place! I went here a bit early for lunch, as I have been up many hours..........when I walked in around 10:30 AM or so, there was only one other person dining in there. What can I say about the place........well, it's definitely an old skool throw back.....if fact looking at the vinyl booths looks like I was in a 60's or 70's diner. Some of the seats have seen better days, as I saw duct tape over the cracked vinyl, and when I sat in one of the booths, I literally sank into the seat like I was sitting in a toilet bowl, so I had to get up and move to another booth. Small kine ghetto! Lol! Upon sitting down, the friendly waitress dropped off a menu & water. Upon scanning the menu, this place offers a local fare, as well as Japanese food. I really did not know what to get, so when the waitress came over to take my order, I asked her what they were known for? She gave me a few suggestions, and I ended up picking something from the local menu - The Hamburger Steak with rice & toss salad. What can I say about the grub........well, it was just okay for me....I've had better, yet I've had worst too. There was no wow factor for me over here, but at least I got something in my stomach. The hamburger steak came with two thin patties, with brown gravy & onions. I did like the onions over the hamburger steak as it had a slight bitterness to it. Service was great, and there is a small private parking lot in front of the restaurant. Careful when you exit the parking lot, as the parking spaces are faced at an angle, so when you are pulling out of the parking lot, you have to reverse back onto the road. Can be a bit dangerous, but what are ya gonna do if the parking lot is so small? If you like throw back mom & pop places......you may want to check out Archies.

This restaurant has been here since the 70's. Same family still owns & runs this establishment. I've been coming to eat here since I was a child. Food is still consistently delicious. Now the faces have changed, but the interior has not!! A must if you live or visit Maui!!!

My wife and I had a take out order of Hamburger Steak and Shrimp Tempura from Archie's today (7-25-15). Both of the meals were horrible. The Hamburger Steak seemed to have been made with too much bread crumbs and an over abundance of salt. If someone with high blood pressure at this, they would probably have a stroke! The Shrimp Tempura was made with a very thick batter (not authentic Japanese style tempura). The tempura also tasted like it was fried in very old oil. Yuck! We could not finish the meals at all.

Always, every time, breaded teriyaki steak plate. Tonight, was ono! Was nicely seasoned and breaded. Meat was soft too. I forgot to take a snapshot! Every once in a while they bring out a hard burnt plate. But tonight archie's made it ono-licious again.

I love too come to Archies, its a cute little older restaurant in Wailuku on Lower Main Street.. They serve Japanese and local plate lunches. Prices are not that bad pretty reasonable. Friendly customer service. Private parking lot with about 12 stalls in front of restaurant. There is a bigger lot across the street but be careful when crossing the road there is no crosswalk.

Our recent lunch at Archies was a pleasant surprise. I had the Gomoku Won Ton min. My lunch partner tried the Chow mein. Both were enormous servings. I really enjoyed my dish. There was a great variety of veggies as well as a fish cake, sliced spam and pork. We also tried a small veggie salad and Namasu salad both of wish were tasty. The veggie salad was nothing special, but was fresh. Next time I got back I'll get a large Namasu salad. (tangy dressing tossed lightly into a mix of chopped cabbage, carrots, onion, fish cake) The table next to us both ordered the tonkatsu (fried breaded pork) which looked amazing. The food came out fast, hot and the service was on top of it. I'm a fan! They're open for breakfast. Lunch served till 1:30 and then they open back up for dinner. Oh yeah, the price is right on all the dishes!

I love this place and the authenticity of it.my favorite is the breaded teriyaki and the shrimp tempura. The only thing is the awful smell of old carpet and the decor needs an update cause they are still rock 70's wallpaper booths and decor but I still love the food and service

I'd say this is the fast food equivalent of a Japanese restaurant - the food is cheap and greasy and the restaurant is practically falling apart. They need to close for a few months to revamp the menu and renovate.

Great local spot, glad I found this place. Thanks Yelp reviewers! My mom and I were visiting Iao Valley and needed a lunch spot, we were looking for some comfort food and what's better than noodles? We missed it the first time (tourists) and drove right past, it was hidden, and there is a parking lot right in front. There were only a few spots and most were taken since it was lunch time. Ordered the saimin noodles, texture of the noodles was great. Portion was large, and there was a lot of veggies. The broth was a bit salty for me but it was still pretty tasty. My mom really liked her nabeyaki udon, I tried it and actually preferred it over my saimin. The decor is lackluster, definitely could use a reno, the covering on the booth seats were ripping, stuff was broken...but eh, i care mostly about the food. Service was great too and prices were very reasonable for what you get.

After a long day driving to Hana I was starved and eager to eat a big meal. A friend recommended Archies as a local "whole in the wall" type place so we decided to check it out. I left the place satisfied and happy that we didn't have to spend $20 per person. Parking: Smaller lot holding about 10 stalls in total. If the parking lot is full then your best bet is to try to find parking in the side roads around the corner. FYI the lot is made so you have to reverse into the street to get out. Atmosphere: Its like a blast from the past. I think the restaurant was probably built in the 60-70s and definitely shows it. To me it has a cross between an old school local Japanese restaurant and a 70's style house. For some reason everything is orange and lime green. One side of the restaurant is filled with reg tables and chairs and the other side is filled with orange booth type chairs and tables. FYI the bathroom is located in the back near the main kitchen. Service: On my visit service was fine and friendly. If anything they were a bit on the slow side but nothing crazy. The restaurant was only filled but they did take a while to take our order. When they did finally take our order our food came out relatively quickly and the waitresses were friendly and talkative. I didn't notice a bus boy and the same waitresses also had to work the cash register. Also one of the best things about Archies is that they close at 8pm on most days(it can be difficult finding cheaper local food for dinner in Maui) Price: All in all this might be one of the cheapest sit in restaurants in all of Maui(although I don't live there so I can't say I've been everywhere). We went with the under $9 Gomoku Won Ton and the under $10 Misoyaki Butterfish Tesishoku(complete meal). The Gomoku Won ton was huge and for what we got it was pretty cheap. The real value was the butterfish meal. You rarely find a restaurant to serve butter fish this cheap and especially not as a soup and side dish set. Food: My Gomoku Won Ton min was huge and filled with about as many things as you could fit into a Chef Salad. You have broccoli, carrots, boiled egg, charshu, watercress, cabbage, tofu, cucumber, onions, celery and of course won ton. The noodles were cooked just right although the broth didn't have to much to it. The Misoyaki Butterfish came out as two nice pieces with the skin along with miso soup, tsukemoto and another picked cabbage type dish. Quality wise both were delicious Overall: If you're in town and want to get a cheaper bite to eat for dinner or lunch and you want to experience real Maui then you should make your way to Archies. Sure it has a weird motif and of course its not in the most ideal location but the food is tasty and of a good value. Plus the menu is big enough that everyone should find something they will like

4 1/2 stars I'm becoming a huge fan of this place! Tried the fried rice with 2 eggs and was very impressed! The fried rice was obviously made to order and very tasty. The eggs were cooked to my liking and weren't overcooked, like some places seem to do. Even the homemade hamburger sandwich was delicious. Only wish they served French fries. Won ton min also extremely tasty and the homemade won tons are really tasty. I don't think I've had a bad meal here since I went back. Only thing was the cost of the eggs. I think I paid an extra 3 bucks for two eggs. Oh we'll, the fried rice made up for it! You gotta try this place!

When you initially hear the name "Archie's" you imagine an American diner joint that will serve burgers and breakfast, right? Well, inside you will actually find a restaurant that serves very delicious and satisfying Japanese food. My family was driving around Wailuku trying to find a place to eat. It ended up that Sam Sato's (famous Saimin) and Tasty Crust (famous pancakes) were both closed! So, we parked our car, and started yelping around to find a restaurant that we could stop and eat late lunch/dinner at. The reviews of Archies seemed alright. Some reviews mentioned drab interior design, while others mentioned very poor service. When we arrived, however, none of the reviews seemed to be as accurate. The waitress that greeted us was very energetic and nice, and the interior seemed somewhat outdated, but nothing too bad. The menu was packed. It was big enough that it was tough to make a decision on what to get.

If you don't mind the shabby decor, you'll enjoy this place. Archie's has good comfort foods available. I had the loco moco and it was pretty decent. I'd stop by again if I'm in the area.

I've been coming here for years now, but only recently converted into a foodie and totally love two of their noodle dishes. ATMOSPHERE: Total hole-in-the-wall, stuck in the 70's green, orange & brown color scheme. Some booth seats are duck taped, the wood panels are termite-eaten, the wall paint is peeling, and there's a fanned out mirage of dust stuck on the ceiling from the a/c. But they have a PASS card from the Department of Health lol! MENU: Breakfast items, teishoku trays, donburi, local plates, saimin, udon, somen, chow fun, sandwiches, burgers. FOOD: Miso Soup - The small bowl accompanied my donburi entree. They use the white miso which is lighter in flavor than other versions (red being my favorite,) and comes with minced tofu and green onions. Nabeyaki Udon - This used to be the best version on the rock but it tragically tumbled to third place after my nabe mission launched in 2015. It comes in a cast iron pot, piping hot. The broth is dark and salty (some places love to make theirs sweet.) Topped with half of a boiled egg, 1 tiny piece of shrimp tempura, broccoli, zucchini, fish cake, a carrot slice, seaweed, onions, chicken, cabbage and spinach. The udon is always chewy perfect. Gomoku Won Ton Min - This is my favorite dish here. Noodles and pork-stuffed won tuns in a clear and salty broth, topped with zucchini, Spam, celery, tofu, fishcake, broccoli, spinach, pork, bean sprouts, onions, cabbage, carrot and half a hard boiled egg. If you love veggies and noodles, this is a must have! Chop Steak - Strips of steak stir fried with onions and bean sprouts in a savory soy-based sauce. Comes with steamed rice and either a small side of veggie salad or macaroni salad. Very popular dish, but a bit on the small side for me. Tempura - 3 big shrimp, 3 bunches of green beans, 3 bunches of carrots and 3 eggplant slices, deep fried and crunchy. Comes with tempura dipping sauce & grated daikon. Chicken Katsu Donburi - The chicken katsu wasn't crunchy at all due to the dish being steamed I believe, but the flavor was really good, a nice and subtle mixture of sweet and savory, and topped with a scrambled egg and green onions. This is a huge dish with a good price. Gomoku Saimin - 3.2.15 - This is the exact same dish as the Gomoku Won Ton Min minus the won tons. The broth is clear and salty with that deep veggie flavor which I absolutely love. Toppings are broccoli, half a boiled egg, fish cake, carrot, spinach, Spam, onions, pork strips, and chopped cabbage. Delish! Hamburger Steak - 4.25.15 - The best on the rock! Two good sized homemade patties that were super moist with delicious crispy edges from the flattop, grilled onions, a savory dark brown gravy smothered on top, two scoops of rice, and a very good mac salad. Priced nicely at $8.50. I'm a pig and I'm stuffed after this one! Saimin - 6.1.15 - My mom ordered the small size, and boy is it TINY! It's the size of a small soup bowl and filled to the brim. It's simply noodles topped with green onions and slices of Spam. Zero veggies. Large portion available. SERVICE: Overall service is friendly, and has gotten better over the years as the staff has gotten younger. TIP: For some odd reason, if the restaurant is busy with dine-in's, they REFUSE to do take-outs. Call ahead, don't just walk in. OVERALL: The best nabeyaki and gomoku dishes on the rock. Prices spiked in 2013... Yikes!

Love the atmosphere, just like eating at Grandma & Grandpas. The decor is like something out of "That 70s Show". Orange, brown, green, when you sit down in some of the booths, you sink right into the chair where previous guests made holes. Now to the food......AWESOME!!! Like most people say go with the Gomoku Saimen. Im not a Saimen eater, but this is really really good and filling. If you got the stomach, make it awesome with a Cheeseburger. Another item to try if you are a first timer/regular is the Yakitori Don. Its a small bowl with rice inside. There are small cut up morsals of chicken with yakitori sauce and diced seaweed to garnish it off. The prices are reasonable and you will go away happy.

I used to be quite a frequent flyer of Archie's and then something happened to the service and the food so I stopped winging in altogether ... nervously ventured back one evening last week and was very pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent but more importantly, the food was tasty! Served hot and delicious! (totally loving their updated tsukemono which I found to be much fresher and crisper than ever). It's back to the same old comfortable, relaxing Archie's serving local-style favorites. Definitely on my list of "go to" places in Wailuku - am happy to report that Archie's is back!

  • Natalie H.

The service was wonderful, friendly and took no time at all to deliver. I researched and was expecting it to be a "hole-in-the-wall" wonder. It was a little beyond a hole-in-the-wall and badly needed an update. Not just for cosmetic purposes, but for comfort more than anything. When I sat down in the booth I was tipped sideways by a spring. Archie's could be so much better if they would simply give it a face lift by new bench seating and touch-ups here and there. But the service was exceptional!

First of all the name "Archies" is kinda of a misnomer because the place isn't some drive inn serving American food. It serves Japanese and local Hawaiian dishes. Good shit though. When you walk in the first that comes to mind is "dump"! I don't blame them. The decor is shitty, something that would be in style in the 80's. But it's relatively clean and the service is fast. Menu: Get the Tempura. It's light and flaky, never soggy and oily. Shit is consistent and great every time-but pricey for a Wailuku establishment. Their other items I have ordered in the past; udon, salmon shioyaki, breaded veal, breaded teriyaki, nabeyaki, chicken katsu, and some of the "dons" are all great, just don't expect huge servings. Overall, the food is really tasty. Service: Um, lol. A little give and take. Don't expect a smile when ordering. Do I personally care? No, but is the service NOT shitty. Not by any means. Bonus: If you don't eat yourself silly, there is a pretty happening local bar next door called "Tiffanys" that has a lot of hot local women there on Mondays (football season), Wednesday (hump day i guess), Thursday (party days for the working people) and of course Friday. So if you are in the Wailuku area of Maui and in the mood for Japanese comfort food, give Archie's a try. It's tasty and pretty authentic.

Mmm udon. A bit of a hole-in-the-wall so don't drive too fast or you'll miss it. The decor is a bit dated but that's not why you're here. You're here because you want some tasty soupy things...and you came to the right place.

  • Becca M.

Close to home yet the best place to eat!! Archie's offers a large variety on their menu at reasonable prices. The restaurant itself looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70's, but that's irrelevant! The place is family friendly, so it's not surprising that it gets crowded at times. But hey, it's worth the wait!! Anything and everything is delish there - especially their beef teri - so give it a try!
