A little better than the typical road-side mom and pop style establishment, but a little pricier too. The mahi sandwich, although a bit dry, was still flavorful. I substituted maui onion potato chips for a side salad, and my friends told me that I made the right choice. I assume it's the owner's teenaged daughter or niece working behind the counter taking orders because she had the look of an indentured servant. She was attempting to be friendly, bless her heart, but she just couldn't disguise the smoldering look of "I hope this place burns down before I turn 18."

Wow, I'm left wondering whether I went to the same place as the other reviewers. We stopped here for lunch after our second day of hiking in the volcano, and our food was honestly terrible. I had a chicken plate and husband had a ribs plate, and though I was starving, I could only eat about half my lunch. The chicken was way, way too sweet, the rice was not cooked well, and the macaroni salad was pretty gross. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but husband's food was no better. The one saving grace of this place was that the women working there were super nice. I just wish that the food had measured up!

Small location in Volcano Village, sandwiches, daily plate special, delicious looking sweets...all homemade! The bread is delicious! The sandwiches are big enough to share! This place is less than 10 minutes from Volcanoes National Park and is a great place to pick up lunch before you go in for a great hike!

Crappiest Coffee Ever!!! Food looked really good - but we didn't try it.

Great place to go if you enjoy puking your guts out later that evening. We went here after a long day at the volcano. We both ordered their ahi sandwich and macaroni salad. The ahi was gray! Not a good color for tuna. My wife took a couple bites and it tasted super fishy, which no fresh fish should ever taste. The macaroni salad wasn't bad. Later that night I awoke to the sound of my wife throwing up, no doubt it was the gray, spoiled, ahi.

Great local service for an even better price! The ladies there are so sweet and know how to cook! The chili hit the spot and ahi tuna sandwich was delish! one of those hole in the wall spots with great food and service!!

What's not to like??? 1) super close to Volcano National Park. You can easily take a break, exit the park, get here in about 5 min, enjoy lunch... and head back to the park. 2) helpful staff. The room where the counter is is SUPER TINY, but you can squeeze in, pick your order and options, drink, dessert... and the staff was nice. 3) good variety of sandwiches and hot food, including soups. Super delicious. I had a turkey sandwich was was delicious and huge. DH had the Portuguese Bean Soup which to his delight included sausage and was super delicious. DS had the "lunch plate"--but this was more Ohio-style lunch plate than Hawaii-style. Large serving of roast beef over rice, with some roasted potato and carrot. He devoured it all. 4) OK place to sit. They have several picnic tables with shade. It's along the street, but there's not much traffic and we enjoyed sitting outside, watching the birds and the trees. 5) delicious dessert. We had a wonderful chocolate dessert which was WONDERFUL and a cinnamon bun which I thought was ordinary.

We ate a decent sandwich one day before we headed into Volcano Park. The bread and sandwich were ridiculously big, which I don't care for because it made the sandwich a little unwieldy. But everything seemed fresh and the price was decent. A good place to stop for a quick lunch.

Hard to notice from the faded white signs. Stopped here after hiking the Kilauea Iki trail. Fresh Ahi burger was very good although not as big as the sandwiches. Girlfriend's Turkey sandwich was huge and delicious. Dad had a very nice light spinach quiche. The woman running the place was very friendly and helpful with the menu choices.

Decided to grab some breakfast before my meeting. Seemed fitting to order the "breakfast bento" eggs were nice and fluffy, bacon cooked perfectly!! Cheap eats- stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

Great little hidden place on the side of a store close to the entrance to volcano national park! Two of us had the Ahi burger which was fantastic! Also had the chili as it was pretty nippy outside...definitely hit the spot! We also tried the Lau Lau plate lunch which was delish! The sides of five bean salad, macaroni salad, and potato salad were excellent!

  • Franck M.

The sandwich we shared was twice as big as expected, so it makes it a good value for the area. You pick your own ingredients for your sandwich... The roast beef was a miss, the 3-seeds bread as well as the rest was fine. Nice pie and cake options for dessert. This is a tiny place... if you don't take it to go, you only have the option to eat on the sad tables outside.

  • Mihir M.

My wife and I split a soup. They also have sandwiches. It is near the entrance to Volcanos national park, so convenient. A good place for light, inexpensive, healthy options.

Road side stop with home made yummy sandwich and soups and dessert too. Try their tarts. Their Portuguese bean soup and chili are to die for!!!!! Cheap price. Good value. Friendly service.

Ate breakfast here before we went for a hike in Volcano. We got the fried rice (with spam mixed in) with an egg on top (your choice of how the egg is made, we chose scrambled). Delicious and kept us going during our 4-mile hike through the crater.

Stopped here for lunch while visiting Volcano National Park. Only about 1.5 miles from the park entrance, this was the perfect lunch spot. Menu consists of sandwiches, quiches, and a couple of plate lunches. The portions were good and the prices were very reasonable. Had the tuna burger which was good. Sandwiches were gigantic and well worth the price. All the seating is outdoors in front of the restaurant.

  • Pegeen B.

A little cafe tucked away behind one of the general stores. The sandwich was huge - perfect for 2 - and good bread. We also got some beef chili. It was just what we needed to take on our hike in Volcano Park.

A delightful gem within the village of Volcano! We stopped here twice during our visit to Volcano. A great way to pack an inexpensive lunch for your hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or other daily expeditions!! We were greeted by smiling, helpful staff. For $7 you can design your own large gourmet sandwich (one is truly enough to share between 2 people). We had a choice of 3 freshly-baked breads, several meats and cheeses, fresh veggies and condiments. Great value, great sandwiches, great service. A+++!

We tried the three plate specials, pork roast, lau lau and beef stew. They were all good. The portuguese bean soup was exceptional. The owner was very helpful in explaining the lau lau plate. We would definitely go back there again.

Stopped for breakfast and they were out of some items on the limited menu. Not very friendly, bacon was microwaved. Charged extra to substitute cheddar cheese on my breakfast croissant which was greasy and also microwaved. Very friendly to locals and obviously assumed we were tourists because they were unfriendly and we will not go back! I love to support small local businesses but not this one!

I really love this restaurant and its not only because I am a Jesus freak to! I love the scriptures on the wall and each time I walk in I always love reading them while I wait for my food. It also reminds me to pray....I have to admit that the food isn't anything amazing. But its still warm and hearty, I usually go with the breakfast croissant bacon of course. There brownie chunks are really good sometimes a little to gooey for my taste but its a brownie who can complain to much about chocolate. The cost are a pricey on certain items but I am ok with paying them and supporting local. This is a great place to stop in an grab a snack, if you looking for more on the go items I highly recommend the store located in front of Lava Rock Cafe just down the road. They are cleaner, more reasonably priced than the store just around the corner.

Very good, local food. The Lau Lau pork was flavored with Butter Fish. Outdoor seating but a large covered area. Family owned and ran. Friendly place!

This was a nice surprise! Volcano village is a weird place, with a few people truly being local. Most people are just stopping along the way to Volcano National Park, so are not coming for breakfast. I actually stayed in Volcano Village for 5 days, and decided one random day to check this place out for breakfast. I'm glad I did! I got the breakfast plate which came with egg, sausage, and bacon. All over rice. I loved this combo! It was very satisfying. My friend got a fruit pastry that was absolutely delicious! Pricing is not as cheap as one would expect, but it's not exorbitant either. They have a bunch of different snack items that are good to bring to the parks if you get hungry later on. I would check out this place to try a local Hawaiian joint. Very friendly service! Cute tables outside to sit at.

Loved this place. Only reason I don't give 5 stars is for the seating. Nothing special just picnic benches outside, not very comfy by they are clean. The food was delicious. I got the tuna sandwich on Mac nut cranberry bread and a salad. The macaroni salad wasn't great tho. It was a great location, close to the volcano national park. Try this place out

  • JD L.

It's a great little cafe with lots of outdoor seating. The serve breakfast from 7:00am - 11:00am. I got the chili bread bowl and it came with an extra cup of chili. Great place to stop and eat if you are on the way to see the volcano.

  • Crystal L.

I had the breakfast here, and it was satisfying enough. The Kau coffee was pretty good, but nothing crazy amazing. My favorite part was the chocolate pecan tart, although I would have preferred a little more chocolate and pecans and less sweet gooey filling, but it was still tasty. The price was good considering the location; two croissant sandwiches, two coffees, and the pecan tart came to $15. If I returned I would like to try the tasty looking quiche. Service was friendly and quick. While the croissant sandwich was pretty good, I think the cheese on it was Kraft singles...

The Skinny: solid sandwich which was light on the protein and cheese but 1 sandwich is very large - good for sharing (3) service: it's counter service (3) Value: given the limited dining options in this area, it fills your stomach and is relatively cheap compared to other joints (2.5) After meandering in the Kazumara caves all morning, we were famished. We had planned to get to the South point of the island later that afternoon and we really just wanted to find something to eat and go. Café Ohia fits this bill. A small family owned road side café, it has outdoor seating only. You go in and order your sandwich and it is made to order. We ordered a ham and cheese on mac-cranberry bread which was $8.50. The sandwich is twice the size of a regular sandwich so it's not a bad deal. You can top it according to what you like - sprouts, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. The bread was good - the macadamia/cranberry bread had a nice flavor to it - a bit different from your regular sandwich offerings. The vegetables were good too. The proteins however were a little scarce. There was only a relatively thin layer of ham/cheese in the sandwich and it tasted like regular ham/cheese you would get at a conventional supermarket. It was okay - not great. Overall, it's not a bad place to eat if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg to grab a quick bite around this area. However, it's nothing really outstanding. 3 starred review.

We stopped in here for lunch while we were at the national park. Best value we've found! Huge, delicious sandwiches (you probably only need a 1/2 sandwich which is only $5.25) and the chili and cornbread were amazing. The place looks unassuming but the people are friendly, the prices are very reasonable and the food is fresh and awesome.

If you just finished a trail or sight seeing at VNP and are looking for a yummy meal, def come here! Good was amazing! I love the outdoor seating and the place is just cute! The food is really so delicious, def try the cornbread and chili :)

  • Victoria B.

Soup, chili and bread fantastic for a chilly, rainy day, and they made us feel very welcome. Don't expect fine china (the little plastic spoons are really not up to the job) or elegant ambiance as it's an old Hawaii style kind of shack with picnic tables. And the bathrooms while clean were not (for the ladies at least) equipped with soap or towels. Good food? Check. Basic accommodations? Also check.

Great spot to stop before or after visiting the volcano national park. Simple menu for lunch. The vegetarian chili was fresh and tasty, the fish burger (they used Ono) was great. The family was really sweet that operate the place too. The school bus dropped off just as we were eating and they added a warm, friendly vibe. Safe bet here.

  • Brett S.

Great quick place to stop for lunch if you're in Volcano. The sandwiches are pricy, $8.50, but it is more like 2 sandwiches and you can save half for later size. Very tasty too. Polite staff, they also have good desserts if you are into sweet stuff.

    * Price: $10 for a huge gourmet sandwich. Not a bad deal! 3+ star. * Ambiance: small place. Very casual. Outdoor seatings. Plenty of parking. 3+ star. * Location: 15 minutes from the park. Located in volcano village, next to the only grocery market of the area. 4 star. * Meals: fresh and tasty. Good place to get your lunch packed before heading to the park. * Service: friendly, island style... so be patient! 4 star. This is averaged to 4 star for me. This place has been here forever... we always stop by here to get our sandwiches before heading to the park eveytime we visit the area. The sandwich is huge, fresh and very tasty with local vegetables and freshly baked macadamia nut bread. They also serve freshly brewed kona coffee, deserts, pastry, other lunch items like salad, quiche, etc. There is outdoor seating area where you can enjoy your food or just hang out while waiting for your food. The counter is very small. There are only 2 people working here to take orders and prepare food... so expect to wait for a little bit. They will bring to food to you all nicely packed! Would recommend this place to our friends and family! We definitely come back!

Great sandwich spot right around the corner from Volcano National Park. If you are looking for a deli to pick up a good sandwich before a hike, this is your spot. Its a giant sandwich!- I would say half a sandwich is enough to fill you up, Save the other half for later in the day. Bread options??! Get the macadamia/cranberry bread!

It's a side of the road, hole in the wall restaurant worth eating at. Don't expect any thing fancy. Food is served on picnic tables outside. The service is friendly, the food is good and it's off the beaten path of the tour busses. This is a no frills place worth the stop.

The sandwiched here are HUGE! Split a whole with my wife and it was more than enough for both of us Great service.

Good sandwiches, chili, and CHEESECAKE! Pleasantly surprised with the quality and a half sandwich is sufficient.

A perfect place for humongous sandwiches. We stopped by here for lunch while we were in the big island. It had started raining pretty hard and everything was foggy. You could not see in front of you. We ducked into Cafe Ohia, had a great meal and left just in time as the fog cleared. The ladies who were here are nice. And I enjoyed my sandwich. Would be back!

Such a delicious little sandwich shop in Volcano! The ambiance isn't much to brag about but the food is delicious and the employees (family shop?) are nice and quick. It's build your own sandwich so we did the 3 grain bread (yum, made there I'd guess?), turkey, mayo/mustard and all the veggies. It's one of those few shops left on the planet that doesn't charge by individual toppings but instead has you pay a reasonable price for a solid sandwich. And I shouldn't forget to mention that the sandwiches are huge! My husband and I are fairly good eaters but we were fine splitting a sandwich and a bowl of chili. The chili is super ono and perfect for the often cold days and evenings in Volcano. Recommended. Visit and eat up!

Eaten here twice during my stay, a good spot for lunch. The half sandwich and soup is the way to go. I could tell they put the effort in with a homemade feel upon the meal. The seating is open air, great to enjoy the fresh air at the higher, cooler elevation.

Good breakfast! Great outdoor seating. $24 for breakfast for two people with coffee. Got the breakfast bowls with bacon and Portugese sausage. They were excellent.

  • Christie W.

Went here as a late lunch after a long day of hiking in the park. Chose it because it was open. It's not a place we would have likely stopped otherwise, as it's not much to look at and the overwhelming amount of religious paraphernalia plastered all around was a bit much. Got bread bowls with soup (boyfriend chose the Portuguese bean, I had the chili) and 1/2 sandwiches. The wait was long even though there weren't many people there. The sandwiches and soups were tasty but nothing to write home about; best part was the bread bowl itself. But the food hit the spot, so if Thai Thai down the street isn't open next time I'm hungry, I'll prolly go here again.

Great sandwiches. If your not a big eater, share one sandwich with a friend. Very friendly ladies. We didn't try the deserts but they looked delicious.

There's really not much else nearby, but this is a nice place for a breakfast sandwich or probably lunch sandwich (we only went for breakfast). The menu is small, but sufficient. We got croissant sandwiches that were delicious. They also had cereal and a few other choices. It's basically counter service with outdoor seating. The coffee was pretty good, too.

We stopped in after a great bike ride in Volcano National Park for a quick bite to eat. We were so impressed with the service and the eats. All seven of us ordered mostly sandwiches. The chili and Mac salad was so Ono! We will definitely return on our next park visit.

The sandwiches were flavorful and the homemade bread was the cherry on the top of the sundae. The rustic atmosphere added to its charm. Try the homemade chili.

Love it, ALWAYS. They sell bread bowls separately for $3.50 each to take home. It seems this place runs out of clam chowder quickly. Open 6am to 7pm daily. Cranberry bread pudding, which I have yet to try, to sandwiches ($6.95) to tiramisu. Granted the baked-goods selection varies and consists of maybe 6 things. It is a small place. FANTASTIC idea to stick a massive sandwich in your backpack on your way up to Volcano though they do have a few decent sized tables outside. Today, tuna sandwich on Volcano 3 seed bread with Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard, and all the veggies (lettuce, tomato, sprouts, pickles, cucumbers and onions). Massive and satisfying. Leftovers, of course. See picture The boy: Roast beef on Oatmeal White bread (closest thing they have to white bread) with Provolone, mayo, lettuce, pickles. Massive and he gives it a 9! 10 if it was toasted but I'm not sure they do that. See picture The bread is the highlight. Common menu but fresh ingredients.

Really nice folks running this place. Gave us great recommendations for food (had a turkey sandwich on the macadamia and cranberry bread), had some good, fresh musubi, and a great, affordable breakfast sandwich selection.

Looked for a decent fast lunch/snack in Volcano. Seems like this town has seen better days and cannot find a way to capitalize on National Park tourist traffic. Had the veggie quiche and coffee. Just okay.

  • Staci G.

Disappointed after so many great reviews. Perhaps we had the wrong things; reviewers raved about the Portuguese bean soup, which I found to be little more than veggie soup with lingua sausage and a few kidney beans. We went in with hearty appetites after a long hike, and though we did not leave hungry it was far from the best meal we've had in town. The baked goods looked tremendous, and my husband inhaled their chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies.

No complaints here. After a subpar breakfast at our hotel we needed to stop somewhere for more food. The owners were extremely friendly and gave us tips while we waited for our food. I had a bagel with cream cheese and some yummy watermelon. My husband got an egg sandwich. Both of us were really pleased with our meals. It's a simple cafe with only outdoor seating.

Really good sandwiches. Mostly fair prices. Had their chili and Portuguese bean soup, didn't care for either. I would say stick with the sandwiches. They are really good. Nice people working there too. Great service and clean.

This is Volcano's go-to lunch shop and anytime hungry place. It's a small diner that has great food that caters to not only visitors but also has great "local kine" foods. The sandwiches are just awesome made on some very tasty breads, but be warned they are huge! The plate lunches and specials are just pure ono and the chef got those recipies down!! I had the roast pork plate and it was truly the best roast pork plate I've had on the Big Island. It was unreal. The bakery selection is truly unique for Hawaii, quiches, tarts, cheesecakes..... Not te usual Hawaii fare, but off the hook good. An interesting twist. Seating is outside which is fine it's covered, and it's Volcano after all, who wouldn't want to be in that fresh air? Lunch time is always busy so the ordering area can get cramped, so be sure to be patient, don't worry the food comes out quick. All in all pretty awesome food, big portions, price is good too. I like it!

We stopped here on the way back to our vacation rental, after Hiking at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I'm not a big sandwich person, but we did not eat breakfast, and had a few hours before dinner. So we decided to just grab a sandwich there. I have to say that we are glad we did! The service was great, from a small family owned and opperated business. We only ordered one sandwich since dinner was in a few hours, and we're glad we did, because the sandwich was huge. Definitely enough to hold us over. Also, had there homemade bread pudding, which was awesome. I love bread pudding. Definitely worth the stop.

Great little place to grab a bite! We happened across this spot while visiting Volcano national park and I can happily recommend. Tasty sandwiches and good value... FYI One full sandwich equals two regular size so sharing recommended.

stars for the bread. Delicious. But the macaroni salad was sour and when I told them all she said was that it was made that day, wouldn't replace it with something else or even just give the money back. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes were no good, not fresh at all. Completely inedible. Over priced food. Cafe Ono down the street was were we thought we were eating. Do yourself a favor and go there.

It's not fancy, but it does the job. Choices are slim in Volcano. I had a traditional Hawaiian dish that I enjoyed.

Standard sandwiches using sub to mid quality meats. The sandwiches are large and can be shared btw 2 people. We ordered a turkey on cranberry Mac nut bread which sounded really delicious but actually came out, meeh not so good. Particularly since the delicious sounding bread was stale and bland. They have daily specials that are not sandwich related but i read other reviewers say stick to the sandwiches. So if that's the best they've got, I'll pass. It is conveniently located to the volcanoes national park. Also, they do spew religious talk on their big screen television which is seen & heard if you sit outside to eat.

So glad I found this little spot! Was visiting the Volcanoes National Park and yelped to find a nearby place for lunch. The tricky thing in this area is that nothing is on the main highway. You've gotta drive the Old Volcano road (like a frontage road to the highway, so you won't end up going too far out of the way) to find a number of little shops and cafes. Cafe Ohia is tucked right off the corner, so keep an eye out for the sandwich board sign on the corner directing you to the parking lot. Just a small parking lot for a very small cafe. No seating inside but there are plenty of picnic tables under the awning out front. I can't rate the restroom, I didn't use it, but if you need to, you'll have to ask for the key. The girls working were very nice, talked story a bit as our desserts were being warmed up. In reality, only 3 adults can fit easily inside to order, so if you're with a big group, or happen to go during a rush, you'll have to patiently wait outside for a turn to peek inside the two cases. One case is full of desserts and sweets. The other has fresh quiches and salads. The sandwich menu is super simple! 3 choices of bread (I urge you to try the cran-mac-nut!!!), a nice variety of deli meats and cheese. Sandwiches made to order and BIG too. 3 choices of soup when we stopped by, I had the chili and it was good, full of beans and ground beef, not too spicy so even my kids ate it. Not amazing, but still good on a rainy day. The mac salad also was good, not the typical hawaiian style with potato, just good ol' deli mac salad. After finishing my sandwich and chilli I had to go back in to get the bread pudding. Love bread pudding and I try to sample every different kind that I come across. This one was delish, made from the same cran-mac-nut bread I'm guessing. ;) My group enjoyed: turkey & provolone on cranberry macadamia nut bread corned beef & provolone on oatmeal white bread spinach, artichoke quiche (warmed) sun dried tomato quiche ham & american on oatmeal white bread chilli = great to warm you on a cold rainy day, not too spicy macaroni salad = deli style, not typical hawaiian style ginormous cinnamon roll (warmed) = cinnamonapalooza! cranberry mac-nut bread pudding (warmed *twice) = YUM!

This place is convenient if you are hungry and need a bite after touring Volcanos National Park. That's how we found ourselves here, despite the uneven reviews. It seems to be family run and their are a number of charitable/religious causes advertised on the walls. The best part of our visit were the really darling hand drawn cards by children to benefit a local school. If you like kiddie art, be sure to pick up a few. But, wait, you are thinking about eating here, right? Well, that's a different story! If your group is on the verge of a meltdown and you really need something to eat, pick something safe. Like a sandwich or a bagel and cream cheese. My son and I made the mistake of ordering the homemade chili that was recommended by other Yelpers. Talk about greasy! The chili will stay with you, not just as a fond vacation memory but as a stomachache and worse for a day or two. We now have a joke about similar greasy spoons - we call it Death by Chili.

Went here after a day at the volcano. We were starving! Split a turkey and provolone sandwich on cranberry macademia nut bread. The bread was a bit dry but overall good sandwich (and I dont normally like sandwiches). Chocolate pecan tart for dessert was SO good. And cinnamon rolls for breakfast!

When on the island, be more iike an islander. But always eat good food. HIGHLIGHTS Now from the outside, Cafe Ohia ain't saying' much. But the Sandwiches speak volumes. And the Macadamia nut and Chocolate Chip cookies? I have to confess, one bite and I hid the rest of them away from my traveling companions. Uh-huh. They were THAT good. AMBIANCE If you are the type of person who is not patient when hungry, you better get in line fast. There are places to sit outside but not very many. Never mind. Just take your purchases and go back into the National parks, pick a road. Park the car and look all around you. You can't find a better picnic spot than that. The cafe doesn't have seating inside. Just outside area with a few picnic tables. Not much ambience as you look at the utility side of the building. YUM FACTOR Their sandwiches make me want to cry with delight. They are so big it's hard to hold in one hand. They are fit in a quarterbacks hand sized big. The ingredients fresh, crisp, well made and layered. The bread was home made, fresh baked sunflower seed. I could have eaten a whole loaf. Flavors just popped. I tried four sandwiches during my visit and found not a one of them to be sub par. Coffee? Fuggedaboutit. LIke water with brown color for effect. SERVICE AND FRIENDLINESS Fast, but not overly friendly because the place is very small and does not have cat swinging room. You see the dessert case upon entering, read quickly and make up your mind. The line behind you has just doubled. VIBE it depends. If you get the hawai'ian gal who is still mad that visitors mess up her island, then you gotta pay your respects to her home turf and be extra nice when you get your sandwich. I mean, even if she has a bit of an attitude, she is right. Or you may get the sweetest lady in the world who has the warmest heart and smile and is so very glad to talk story wit' you and belly laugh about life and love. You just have to roll with it and understand. This island you are visiting is their home.

If you need a break from enjoying the scenic beauty and wonderment of Volcano National Park, this is one of the very few places to grab a bite to eat. At first look, you might be turned off; but don't let the rundown farm equipment fool you, this place is actually pretty good. When you walk inside, ordering can be done a small counter filled with numerous desserts and salads. They only have a few items for sale: soups, sandwiches, and salads. The sandwiches were very big and the vegetarian chili was a great way to warm up during the cold winter day. I would go back if I am ever in need of lunch while at Volcano National Park. Mainly because there aren't many other choices in the area.

If you're looking for a decent sandwich or soup close to the park, this is the perfect stop. The sandwiches are huge -- big enough to share. And the chili was a great way to warm up on a rainy day.

Today I picked up a sandwich, some potato salad and a Diet Pepsi to take over to the Jaggar Museum in Volcanoes Park for lunch. You can choose your bread, your meat, your cheese and your vegetable garnishes. Keiko, the husband of the owner, made my sandwich while we enjoyed some "talk story". The potato salad is dangerously rich. The sandwich was on slices on bread which were huge. Cut in half to make it easier to handle, each half was the size of a typical deli sandwich. Next time I'm in Volcano Village I will go back to try the quiches or a plate lunch. You better bet I'm a fan!!! Inside a tiny shop, you'll find a huge, rewarding lunch!

This place is adorable! Definitely the best (if not the only) place to grab lunch if you are at Volcano National Park! I gave it 3 because comparing to other restaurants the food was not AMAZING...but compared to other things in the area, it would have gotten 5 stars. The sandwich was affordable, delicious, and HUGE...the chili was also flavorful.

After a long long drive around the island from the Kona airport, this little Cafe was a godsend. Bruddah uncle inside was so welcoming, he gave fantastic food recommendations and great life advice too. Food was ono, good. Big portions with small prices.

If you're looking for a place to eat before entering the Volcano National Park, you may sustain your hunger by going to Cafe Ohia. It's a small establishment with outside seating. We arrived for breakfast and I ordered the bento breakfast with Portuguese sausage and fried rice. Total cost was $5.50 and it was A-OK. The fried rice was just drenched soy sauce and rice stirred on a fry pan.... didn't taste too extraordinary, 3 pieces of Portuguese sausage from a ziplock bag, sandwich ham lunch meat and a fry egg. It did its job and we made it through the Volcano hunger-free! Not amazing, but A-OK for what we were looking for!

Went here after a busy day at the national park. Solid sandwich. They are bigger than expected. Our phone was trying to take us further than necessary, but we still were able to find it. Besides cold cut sandwiches, the menu is very limited. I think they also had a chili that day. The volcano bread was good and had a nice flavor.

With few lunch options in Volcano, you easily end up here. I had a ham/cheese sandwich on three seed bread. Simple, but pricey at $ 8,50. The laulau, which was $ 9,25, is a total rip-off - almost nothing but fat, served with a side of boring rice.

Lunch here was okay. There wasn't enough meat on the sandwiches.

The sandwich I has was really tasty but only 2 stars due to the shitty attitude from the two ladies inside. No smiles, no welcome, and when food was served I asked if my sandwich was hot as I had ordered. The lady said "yes" and walked off. I took a bite and it was still cold. I has to chase the lady down and she basically ignored me and walked inside. The other one looked as if I lost my mind when I told her the sand which was cold. She stuck it in the microwave and walked to the back, said something to the other girl who then glared at me and shook her head mumbling something. I asked if there was a problem and the was told they heat the meat not the whole sandwich. I explained the problem again and she turned around and ignored me.

Good sandwiches and soup. Great place to stop before heading in to the park for the day.

Get the turkey on cranberry mac nut bread and take it to Punalu'u Beach Park for a black sand beach picnic. What could be better than sandwiches and sea turtles?

We wanted to go to Kiawe Kitchen, right around the corner, but they were busy so we decided to venture around the corner to see what was there. Cafe Ohia, a tiny (and I mean TINY) hole in the wall popped up. We decided to try this place just because we were so hungry after playing tourist and hiking the Volcano trails. We both ordered the fish sandwich. It was a nice sized piece of fresh fish on a regular hamburger bun with a slice of tomato and a leaf of butter lettuce along with a little side of aioli sauce. It was surprisingly really good, especially considering it didn't look like anything special. The fish was definitely fresh and was very moist. We've actually gone back just to eat that sandwich! We also tried the bread pudding. It wasn't anything to scream about. We tried the ulu salad (breadfruit) that was like a mock potato salad, which was pretty tasty. Also, I just wanted to add that I noticed some of the reviewers who gave this place bad reviews are also tourists who are unfamiliar with LAULAU, which is a local food that a lot (not all) of locals actually really enjoy. Laulau is the pork/fish/luau leaf dish that a few reviewers gave really bad reviews on. It does have fat included in this dish because the fat adds moisture and flavor to the leaves and meat. Sometimes you do come across laulau that has too much fat, so I'll give you that one...but all in all, a lot (not all) of people unfamiliar with this dish do not enjoy it, especially if you don't know how to spruce up the flavors (shoyu/chili pepper water) like a lot of locals do. It's probably kind of an acquired taste and most locals have grown up eating it :)

Tried the Portuguese bean soup, chili, meatloaf, bread pudding and a pecan dessert. All dishes/desserts were just average. Service was nice and friendly. Be aware that they now close at 0500PM (when I was there during Aug 2011). Considering the location and options its a good value for the location but pricey compared to what you would normally expect. Food- 3 stars Value- 4 stars Atmosphere- n/a took out Service- 3 stars

5 stars if you could eat inside. The owners and family were very friendly and the food was fantastic all around. The pecan/chocolate tart was memorably good. We were still pining for the Kiawe Kitchen which is no longer in business at the old site (could not find them anywhere in March 2013) but Cafe Ohia is a darn good replacement! Beet salad - gotta have it.

Delicious been here multiple times. Everything homemade, hope you make it before the meal of the day runs out! The bread pudding is incredible. Best option in the area for price and quality.

Breakfast before the hike. Cinnamon roll was OK. Fried rice with scrambled egg, bacon and Portuguese sausage was very different for me and quite good. Large helpings at a very good price for Hawaii.

Overall: A nice LITTLE stop for breakfast or lunch We stumbled across Café Ohia whilst visiting the Volcano National Park. Their parking is ample with a decent number of tables and chairs. However, the space inside the "café" itself is not ample - it's cramped. On walking into the "café" you'll find that if there are more than three people in there, it becomes very difficult for them to move around. You order what you want, and they'll bring it out to you. There's no indoor seating, everything is outdoors, but is covered. They only sell self serve coffee ($1.75/cup). Café Ohia offers daily specials during the week, served with your choice of salad. Examples include spaghetti with garlic bread, mushroom baked chicken with rice, chicken pot pie with bread, meat loaf with mashed potatoes, roast pork with mashed potatoes, lasagna with garlic bread, Hawaiian style chopped steak with rice, chicken Hekka, sweet and sour spare ribs with rice, chicken tofu with rice = all plates at $6.50 and half orders are $5.00. They also do breakfast, which ranges from $3.50-6.00. Their baked goods include cornbread ($1.75), cinnamon rolls ($2.50), croissants ($1.75) bagels with cream cheese ($2.00) chocolate/almond torte ($2.50) and bread pudding ($2.50). They also do quiches, soups, salads, drinks and made to order sandwiches ($6.95). We had two cups of coffee, a piece of cranberry bread pudding, a humungous cinnamon roll and a piece of pineapple & macademia nut cake = around $11. Everything was quite nice, but nothing special. We did take with us a piece of the sweet and moist cornbread with us as well. This place is a great stop to grab breakfast/lunch before heading off to investigate the volcano nearby

Pretty tasty veggie sandwiches (they are HUGE, so glad we ended up getting half) and yummy vegetarian chili, although it was vastly improved by a packet of salt. The bread choices are interesting and seem to be homemade. A half sandwich and a cup of soup was plenty and reasonably priced. We also ended up getting some very tasty chocolate chip and mac but cookies.

I highly recommend stopping by Café Ohi'a, which is tucked away off Old Volcano Road, behind Kiawe Kitchen. The women who work here were all very nice and it sounds like they try to get as many of their ingredients as possible locally. Our first experience with Café Ohi'a was on our first day in the park. Stewart and I split a sandwich, which was a good call because it was one big sandwich. Cranberry Macadamia Nut bread, ham, turkey, just a bit of mayo, and all of the veggies. It was delicious. Since the sandwich was so good, we went back to Café Ohi'a the following morning for breakfast. Stewart and I split a homemade cinnamon roll, which was awesome. Less sweet than most cinnamon rolls, you could eat a lot of cinnamon roll before being overwhelmed by the sugar. My mom got the croissant breakfast sandwich, which was also very tasty.

Excellent hiking fuel! I stopped in here to grab a sandwich before heading out into Volcanoes National Park - it was the perfect lunch for out on the trail. The sandwiches are a hearty and very tasty. She's open early so you can get your sandwich before heading out in the morning. Get the cranberry macnut bread - its delish!

Meh. Must've ordered the wrong thing, cause, as my girlfriend summed it up, "That was d*gsh*t." Of course, she ordered the the pork & ono wrapped in taro leaves and steamed and it was f'n NASTY. I got off easy with the uber-greasy dyed red chicken. Listen, just order the deli sandwiches. It's the safest play. I don't hate this place, it's just not good. But the people are nice. Oh, and if you need to use the can, bring a compass. (This observation will only make sense if you make the mistake of eating here.)

Excellent huge sandwich on delicious bread, some salads, drinks, delicious chocolate pecan tart all for $20 & worth it! You can choose your bread & veggies. Plus they have plate lunch meals & specials. Very friendly & fast 4 us. Tiny inside just for ordering so line at lunch went out the door, & THAT tells u something about this place's popularity, doesn't it? Basic seating outside but who cares? Get it to go & find one of the nine million beautiful spots inside the park a mile away for your nice picnic lunch! We ate at Waldron Ledge on a picnic table. Glad to find this place - check it out!

My husband and I took a day trip to the Big Island to see Volcanoes national park. After wards, we were famished and were looking for a good local place to eat. We came across Cafe Ohia and decided to give it a whirl. Big mistake. This place had hardly any selections other than 2 warm plates and sandwiches. I ordered a local dish...lai lai something and it was pork which a huge slab of fat wrapped in some leaves. I love trying new things and all but this was more fat then it was pork and tasted like crap. My husband got the chicken dish, which was tough and had zero flavor. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I would say skip it and drive back to Hilo and find a place to eat there instead. Perhaps this place has better sandwiches, and perhaps this was an "off day" but I was really disappointed with our choice and wished we would've gone somewhere else.

It was 9am and our only options were Cafe Ohia and Lava Rock Cafe. Based on the horrifying recent reviews of the latter, we gave Ohia a chance. And for a simple place, they had a simple menu. Kona coffee to drink and I opted for the portuguese sausage, ham, and eggs over fried rice. For the price, it was goof value. But for a meal, I was left wanting more. Based on the scarcity of dining options, I can't be too harsh since this meal helped energize us through our long Volcano day.

Had breakfast there...everything was microwaved. That included the eggs, bacon, Portuguese sausages, and ham. Don't think they make much in house. It was cheap.

People are SUPER friendly. Sandwiches are big. The cranberry Macadamia nut bread is to die for, especially with a turkey sandwich. Their chili is delicious and perfect for a cool day in Volcano. Get the homemade corn bread to go with your chili. We always stop here while after a day of hiking Volcanoes National Park. You won't be disappointed!!

OMG -- we were looking for a place to get something quick and easy . . . and Cafe Ohia was recommended by the owner of the B&B where we're staying . . . all I can say is yum, yum for the tum, tum!!! Their sandwiches are made with homemade bread, fresh vegetables and some pretty tasty deli meats. The 3-seed bread with turkey and provolone is a must-try. Go for the half-sandwich because the full sandwich is pretty hefty. BUT . . . . save room for what has to be some of the best desserts around. My favorite? The chocolate pecan tart -- I'm about to eat my second one of the day!!!!!! Joyce, the brand new owner, is keeping it real with great customer service and delicious food. Plan on eating outside because there's only room to turn around inside the cafe but, as long as you don't want fancy and If you find yourself over on the Hilo side in Volcano Village - you must drop by and see her and the rest of the family.

Limited vegetarian choices. We ordered a soup of the day, vegetarian chili. It had cubes of not-so-tasty tofu, corn, zucchini, garbanzo beans and kidney beans. Decent. The cornbread was alright, if you're hungry. The inside is cramped for space. However, there is lots of outside seating.
