I remember my parents taking me to Flamingo's since I was a little girl. Been loving it ever since, crave for the hamburger steak. Went there a couple of days ago, and very disappointed. The hamburger steak recipe has changed entirely, the gravy is not as brown and tasty, and the hamburger itself must have been mixed with other ingredients they haven't used before. But the toss salad still has the crunchy lettuce I have always enjoyed. Don't think I will go there anymore with the change in chef.

Just tried to make the deposit to reserve the private room for a baby shower after being told that to just stop to make the deposit I find out that they will be closing within the next 10 days. Nothing was ever said that they will be closing at all when the phone call was made to reserve the room horrible business practice no wonder why they closing

The food was horrible. I thought their food would be acceptable but it was far from it. I had the 3 combo plate for dinner: chicken katsu, mahimahi, and teri beef. All were literally not edible. My daughter had plain udon in soup and the noodles were all mushy. My son's tempura don was fried to a deep crisp and soggy as hell. He said the miso soup was sour. What a horror. We will not be going back.

Flamingo's is nostalgic. It retains the vibe of the old neighborhood coffeeshop. It's comfortable, local and and it's great for everyone in the family. The ambience is casual. The staff is really friendly & the food is good. Great for local comfort foods and good conversation. Will definitely be back.

Flamingo Restaurant located in the Pearl City Business Plaza on the second level. I've always wanted to check this restaurant out whenever I was in Pearl City. I have dined at the restaurant twice already with my mother joining me as a dinner companion. First visit -- we were greeted by a waitress, Chris, as soon as we stepped foot into the establishment. She says "Go ahead and sit anywhere you feel comfortable." My mom chose the first booth next to the window. The waitress hands us the menu and we made our decision of what to order. Mom had the mahimahi plate and I had the oxtail soup. Mom says her dish was okay. My oxtail soup was "What the hell is that funky taste?" to "I had no idea they added long rice noodles to this" to "I need to add some shoyu sauce to this soup base because I really don't like the taste of the soup." (Sorry no pics from the first visit since I left my phone back at mom's home to be charged up). Second visit -- we were greeted by a different waitress and the first waitress Chris was working the night shift again. We sat at the same booth as the first visit. This time my mom and I both order the beef stew. Only I had the mahimahi with my beef stew and rice while my mom had mashed potatoes with her beef stew. The beef stew was so delicious. I love it when the meat was very tender and soft...that's good because my mom forgot her dentures at home. Since it was my mom's 65th birthday she received 2 slices of custard pie...I had no idea about this since I was using the restroom at the time. LOL Customer service was excellent by our friendly waitress Chris. She always checked up on us to make sure that our drinks were filled or if we enjoyed our food. She even says to me "Don't be a stranger. Come and dine with us whenever you are in Pearl City especially on Mondays when I'm working." The women restroom has two stalls. One stall the toilet seat showed a cracked line. The wash basin is all rusty around the edges. The restaurant is mighty big. As you enter the restaurant you'll see a display case of baked goods like pies and cornbread. There are shelves with different sizes and different colors of polo shirts of the Flamingo restaurant for sale. There's counter space for individuals who want to enjoy their meal at the counter. There's a small area for group dining. I also noticed a dark section near the restrooms where I think the bar is supposed to be but I believe it is now for storage use. I know the Flamingo Restaurant has been around for a long time. I just wish that current owners could do some renovations on the place to attract more customers and also make improvements on the menu items.

Well, I think I heard this place closed down and I'm not surprised why. Went about a month ago as my parents wanted to try eating here again. There was very little staff working so the service was very slow. I ordered the chicken tofu and the chicken tasted very freezer burnt and the tofu was near spoiled (it was souring already). My kids split the chocolate chip pancakes, which were good but how do you mess up pancakes anyway. One star for ample parking and the fact that they serve breakfast all day. The news was saying they were closing due to the slow business of the rail, but it seemed more than rail work. The food and server were not up to par.

Warning: I wrote this review on a Saturday, so I'm continuing my late post procrastination lol I seriously need to get on track by eating healthy & hitting the gym especially with this weight gain from the holidays, but who starts any diet or clean eating on a weekend? So as I was telling myself that, I was complaining to my wife on how hungry I was, and how she lacked on taking me anywhere "new" to eat, and she retorted saying due to my "closed minded taste" lately, she has not been adventurous taking me to any new restaurant or eatery place (what a way to start off a new year huh?) so I decided to stop acting like "Lady Hulk" & agreed to be adventurous. "Next place we see, we will eat there", exact words my wife told me as we were driving around in circles in Pearl City due to my indecisiveness of food choice. I agreed and 2 seconds later, Flamingo's was what caught our eye... Parking was okay, not too much space but we had no problem finding a parking which was a plus. I admit I didn't feel impressed by just the looks of it, but my wife said "well they've been here for years, so they must be doing something right to be in business" - which I could not less agree with. Pros: - Dim atmosphere when entering - Loads of seating area - Ordered the chicken cutlet and its like having dinner at Aunties house, very home cooked meal style -Food portion was huge! & satisfying -Ordering a dinner menu gets you a soup or salad and a dessert, something like Zippys just not as costly -Wife got the pork and gravy and said it was awesome so it deserves a plus, I thought my gravy for my cutlet was OK, nothing special -Service was good, our server always checked up on us to make sure if everything was okay and refilled our drinks constantly, which of course makes me a happy camper when trying a place for the first time Cons: - The interior of the place definitely needs an upgrade, the topper wear was very miss match for my sort of place to dine in (very "high make maka" of me yeah?) - The floors were a bit dirty, it was kind of a turn off...but then again I am not a big fan of carpet when it comes to dining in someplace -The vegetables they serve was bit cold, very "open" the frozen veggies and steam it and then throw it on the plate..eek. -Fries were NOT fresh (I ordered my chicken cutlet with fries) but it seemed like old fries, and I am not a big fan about that Overall, I rated this place a 3 star, its A-OK and I would probably come again just to try they're breakfast, since I have heard it was a good place to eat. So here is my very late review on Flamingo's! if anything I suggest everyone should try them out! they have been here forever right? (= Happy Eats Yelpers!

Pi = 3.1415 = 3/14/15 = March 14, 2015! Happy Pi Day! 5 Stars for their Custard Pie. I've tried the recipes of numerous bakeries. Flamingo's reigns true, my palate is forever infatuated. The custard is creamy and has a hint of Vanilla. The crust is moist and doesn't leave much of a flaky mess. Whenever my family and I dine at the restaurant, I make sure to leave enough space for a slice of my favorite Custard Pie :D Specially for today, I stopped by the bakery and ordered a whole pie :D Parking: Free Lot

Update! The food continues to be mediocre at best, but I love the frozen-in-time feel it has. I always directs the conversation to fond memories of days gone, such as Dobash cakes & eclairs from Kapiolani bakery...yummy memories...k, nuff dating myself. Anyway, the reason why I decided to even bother give an update is for 2 reasons. Number 1: I like try da kimchee soup. I hear only the owner can make it but he barely come. Can someone get a message to him? Thanks. Number 2: Me & the bf continue to come here periodically to support the place so it remains open and have always been on the lookout for a favorite. We ain't there yet, but we found some pretty good stuff tonight. I had the teri-stake burger with fries and the bf had the chicken cutlet with mash & corn. Winner, winner! I especially loved the double fried fries that reminded me of my childhood. Out of all the cutlets, bf liked this chicken on the best. The orange soda that came as a part of his full-meal always helps to keep the option of Flamingo open for us.

I like this local place. Great variety of food choices. Their banana and apple homemade pies are "ONO" they have local favorites. I like the teriyaki salmon salà d. The salmon is always cooked just right tasty and moist. Their staff are always friendly

This place was disappointing. We walked in and in there pie case was fly buzzing around and landing on them. Ewww... I ordered for breakfast their Hawaiian stew with rice. I was expecting a gravy style stew but I recieved a soup base instead. The rice was not fresh and was cold. Service is slow. I am so bummed right now. My boys ordered eggs and hashbrowns. The potatoes were deep fried and greasy. Gross! My husbands fried rice was greasy and rice was dry. However he said the coffee was good. So there is the single star they earned. Do yourself a favor eat across the street at safe bet. This place is not good.

Family had dinner there last night and the food like always was great. The dressings were tasty. All three entrees spot on in quality and portion size. It was good to visit a place where you are welcome like family. With Wisteria and Columbia Inn gone this is truly the last of the old style dinners. For those of you who have not visited them for a while I suggest you give them a try you will not be disappointed. Sad to hear their last day is Sunday. My first job was at the Flamingo Royal Lanai in Waikiki and I was blessed to spend 10+ years working for them. While I was employed there the Nagamines took good care of me. Any of you old Flamingo crew still in Hawaii we gotta meet there on Sunday.

I gave this place 2 stars because the service was poor and the food was mediocre. They were clearly understaffed. They had about 2 waitresses for the entire restaurant, so service was extremely slow. As for the menu, a lot of items were unavailable, including the Hawaiian stew, everything with turkey and many of their drinks. I ended up going with the French Dip, since the stew was not available. The au jus tasted good, but the roast beef was sliced way too thick and the French fries were not seasoned at all. It was cool to try this place once, but I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. I'd rather go to Zippys.

I've only known of Flamingos for its double crust banana pie. I wasn't a huge fan, but one of my grandpas loved the stuff (God rest his soul). I never sat down for a meal but thought I'd have breakfast while I waited for the oil change place opened. So, I had the Japanese breakfast. Eggs, rice, butterfish were fine. Miso soup was cold and tofu sour, and I usually love miso soup. I'm sure other offerings are better. Now, why I'm really writing is because service was first rate. The wait staff was warm, friendly and welcoming. Concerned that the visit was good. Five stars for service; two stars for food - split the difference. Customer service is a big deal. Especially in a service economy. Your livelihood depends on it, and my encounter here was excellent.

I went there about a week ago to get breakfast with a coworker of mine before starting our shift. Didnt bother to check if the order was correct which was my fault, showed up to work and wanted to eat but didnt have surup so i called to complain. The lady answering the phone appologized, then said well what do you want me to do? I was angry so i said ugh well i wasnt able to eat my breakfast so i want my money back. 7.17.13. Flamingo's is now under new management! Things are still pretty much the same...only big difference is the menus are now laminated and spiral bound. As for menu items, they are still mostly the same. One thing to note, old timers or regulars might notice that the full meals aren't listed to come with a drink--don't worry you still get your choice of soup/salad, starch, & dessert (ice cream, pudding, sherbert)--but even though it's not written on the menu, we weren't charged for the drinks that we ordered; perhaps that was just the waitress providing us with good customer service :) Our family loves coming here for the orange soda!! ;) My usual here is the Pork Cutlet. I noticed that the gravy/sauce no longer includes mushrooms...which I felt took away from the taste a bit, however still yummy (~$12). The teriyaki steak here is also usually pretty good--very tender! Portion sizes are always enormous--expect to leave with leftovers in hand. We were told to have a seat and I don't know what the deal was, but the four of us sat down and no one came to our table to take a drink order or anything. They looked at us and knew we were there but no service. We walked out and went to zippy's. We got actual food and service there.

Best BLT on a buttery bun ever!! They cook the bacon to crispy perfection and its just the best ever Their hamburger royal is really good too, also they have an awesome breakfast menu.. But If you're craving a burger instead of going to McDonald's spend a few extra bucks for a real burger! They give you an option of fries, mac salad or toss salad to go with it. Awesome! Their banana cream pie is delicious and they bake fresh short bread cookies and other baked goods that are sooo good!

I was so sad when I visited Flamingo's two weeks ago. Granted it was busy but service really blowed! Things I noted: order taking took forever(at least 15 mins), water came very late too- I had to get up to get my daughter a glass of water at the counter area and the waitress had a pitcher of ice water in her hand but gave her water from the tap (why?!), and last our order got messed up so everyone (5 adults) got their food while my daughter waited an extra 5 minutes for her blueberry pancakes (thank goodness for the iPhone to keep her distracted)! I ate a breakfast with bacon, fried rice and scrambled egg. I must say the fried rice was yummy! The bacon was very crispy and had no oil on it. The scrambled egg was strange. It was like a yellow frisbee. I did not like the texture one bit. My daughter got a short stack blueberry pancake and the portion was big. She enjoyed it and scarfed as soon as it got to the table. My friend ordered Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice and said it was good. I probably won't return but rather just visit the Flamingo Express in Mapunapuna since it's much more convenient to my home.

I have gone to Flamingo's my whole life. I can honestly say...Their breakfast is the best meal. All you can eat pancakes? Come on! How can you beat that? I've tried other things. But they just weren't as good in my opinion. Every time we go we always get the same kind of waitress: an older, kind, lady. The kind of person you meet for the first time for 2 minutes and after they leave you think, HAVE I met that person before? They're usually really fast too. I mean, you order eggs, meat (your choice of spam, sausage or ham) and the pancakes shouldn't really take too long, right? Still, it's good food at a great place. A place to eat if you're visiting.

Best tasting pancakes by far! Flamingo's is my go to place for delicious pancakes. They are fluffy, just the right texture with a slight sweetness. Also like their waffles. The restaurant ambiance is nothing special so the 5 stars is for their pancakes.

I have been there many times and love the place for its vintage ambiance. Do not have the turkey plate..... I could not eat it and my mother would not either. The canned corn and mashed potatoes were ok but the turkey was inedible. I sent it back and was charged for it anyway.. but they did of fer me an extra pumpkin pie....

When my family and I come here, (and it isn't often) the staff has no personality whatsoever! They don't smile, and when you walk in the door the girl behind the register just looks at you then ignores you. Looking around, It's like the staff is in mourning! They move slow, and the customers have to always call out, "Excuse me, can I have some sugar?" From across the restaurant! Sad, Sad, Sad!!! The food is ok, but when you order something, make sure they don't forget to bring it, as they seem forget often!

Diner establishments have been dying out since they can't keep up with newer restaurants, changing dining habits and tastes. Pearl City is still a neighborhood that can support diner-style or family oriented food. We suddenly got the urge to eat "old-fashioned" soup-to-nuts meals. Whaat's that? Yep, for a set price, your meal is served with your choice of soup or salad, rice, mashed potatoes, or French fries, beverage (hot or cold) and dessert (ice cream, sherbet or pudding). If you want a slice of Flamingo's famous pie, it's $1.95 extra...worth every cent for the signature double-crust banana pie! We ordered the breaded beef cutlet, which was ACTUALLY a slice of beef not ground or shaped and breaded chicken cutlet. The food didn't seem to be fresh because the breading was so hard it was difficult to cut through; it was as if the cutlets had been refried or re-grilled. Even the gravy didn't moisten or "soften" parts of the breading so we scraped it off. Well, at least, the food came out "hot" from the kitchen but looks were deceiving. After we were seated, our waitress had passed us by twice while saying she'd be with us shortly. Each time she passed, she had stopped to clear a table. There were only 4 other tables that were full at the time. Then, when she came to take our order, she seemed to complain about how tired she was. She promptly brought our salads, dinner rolls and meals but passed by our table two more times muttering a apology about forgetting our beverages. She buzzed around other tables and engaged in conversation with, we guess, "regulars". Sorry to say, we were disappointed with both the quality/flavor of food and service. We reminisced about the good ol' days of the Flamingo Chuckwagon restaurants, Columbia Inns and SpenceCliff restaurants and could only say that these diners can only be found in our memories.

Ghost from Christmas past. -It was Christmas week 1984, my wife, kids and I were heading to a Christian house Church gathering to celebrate Christmas. We stopped at the Pearl City Flamingo to pick up an Apple pie. When we got to the gathering everything went well until we got to dessert. One of our friends sliced the apple pie from Flamingo's and put a piece on a plate for me. I paused before taking a bite and exclaimed "Hey, I didn't order Apple and raison pie!". After closer observation we all realized it wasn't a raison, it was a fat and pregnant (with egg sack) house roach. That made pretty much most of us lose our appetites. I returned the pie and did not accept the replacement offer, but did get a refund. -Zoom back to the Future, Christmas week 22 December 2014, almost 30 years to the day. We moved from Pearl City many years ago but I was in the area so I stopped by Flamingo's Pearl City for breakfast. I hadn't been there for at least a decade and had all but forgotten about the pie incident. As I sat there with coffee and newspaper in hand a bit of movement on the floor caught my attention. Yep, there is was, the Ghost from Christmas past. A fat and pregnant (with egg sack) house roach crawling just under the breakfast bar where I sat. I stepped on it with my shoe, which was a bad move because it splattered with a crunchy sound. -When my steak and eggs arrived needless to say I was not quite as hungry than I was when I first walked in. I forced myself to finish the meal that now left an awkward taste in my mouth. I will probably never walk though those doors again and post this in hope that the new owners/management monitor their yelp reviews and address this decades old infestation that they acquired along with the restaurant. -Note, Flamingo shares this building with other food shops/bar and it is safe to assume the roach issue is affecting them all. -Happy Holidays and Eat Safe, Eat Clean....... Comfort food, in relaxing comfortable friendly surroundings. This place reminds me of all the wholesome family oriented eateries that used to dot our landscape years ago. Places where moms and dads would take the family for meals, and the dads would be confident he'd get more than his monies worth. No matter how far we needed to drive, it would always be worth it. Flamingos in Pearl City is one of those places still around. For starters ( maybe a cocktail?) soup or tossed salad with choice of dressing, then a generous amount of food as an entree, along with freshly baked rolls, a drink, and desert after that, all for a decent price that'll really make your wallet happy. Chicken cutlet and beef cutlets were our orders and they certainly didn't disappoint. HUGE pieces of boneless chicken breaded and fried to a golden brown seasoned perfect, a large scoop of hot white rice, all smothered in mushroom gravy, and some steamed veggies on the side. The beef cutlets were like the popular chicken fried steak, but with not as much breading, just a nice thin crispy seasoned crust to the flavorful pieces of meat, and gravy. Along with the full accompaniment of sides made our tummies ready to burst. (take out boxes please:) But nothing completes this comfort food binge like a warmed brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and coffee. Fast and very friendly service, hand in hand with the nostalgic familiar surroundings, the home style meals that happily fills you to the brim (and more!) Stick a fork in me, cause I'm done...... till next time... for sure!

Horrible service. Waitress practically threw our plates at us. She walked away while she was taking our order and was a complete bitch. She was dirty looking and seemed like she hated her job. They should hire more cheerful people and get better customer service. Food was horrible too. Hated this restaurant.

Omg... food was awful. I ordered saba plate. Rice was old, very dry. Corn on the side was taste nasty. If you live in hawaii all your life, would know the taste of rice if its good or bad. Service was slow. I told waitress about that food. There was no consideration. I don't think I go back to this place. I should have gone to daiichi ramen or bravo instead.

one star added for memories of when my family would always eat at the flamingo on kapiolani when i was a child, otherwise it was decent food and the hamburger steak was homemade; again bringing back memories of when everyplace in hawaii had hamburgers that were made like this. hot banana pie good too!

Although I was informed by my friend that Flamingo's has been around for 4-E-V-E-R, I honestly can't say I remember ever dining here at all. And now I think I would say I may frequent this place often when in the area. My friend, who was born and raised in Aiea, recommended this place for dinner after we saw large crowds waiting outside our 2 first choices (genki sushi and zippy's). Being budget conscious, we didn't want to go somewhere that would leave our wallets significant lighter after dinner. Located in the small shopping complex across Zippy's Pearl City, there is parking available on 2 levels with the restaurant itself located on the upper level. Thankfully there was no wait and we were seated immediately. As soon as you walk in, you have this feeling as if you've walked through a time portal of some sort and have been transported back to the 70's. Why you ask? Well, it seems that the owners may have wanted to keep that "diner" feel to this place and chose not to upgrade to a more modern style, but perhaps keeping the original decor only adds to the charm of the restaurant. The menu has all the "local" favorites you could ask for, but I ended up ordering from their new additions menu and chose the chicken katsu don. My friend ended up having a combo meal with kalbi and shrimp tempura. His meal came with a salad, small drink, and dessert, while my dish came with miso soup. I was very, very satisfied with my food and probably would have finished he entire dish too if I didn't get full. The age of our waitress could have been that of our mothers or maybe even our grandmothers, but she had the mind and memory of someone in her 20's. Although she had to write our orders down, she was very prompt in returning with napkins and utensils as well as our drink orders. She brought out our dinner in a timely manner, and did a fantastic job of checking up on us to see how we were doing throughout our meal, and made sure to refill our drinks before the glass was empty. Bottom Line: Great service. Great food. Great price.

Yelp Challenge 365 # 159/165 This place has got to OLD. They could use a renovation to brighten up the interior. They could improve on their customer service. They could be friendlier. They could they could!! they could!!! The only thing that changed at this restaurant over the years are their prices. This sounds like such a negative review. I am trying to find something positive to say about this place.....ummmm..... okay, they have the best banana pie and biscuits. How can you screw up a basic breakfast of portugese sausage, scrambled eggs and pancakes? I will tell you. they gave me 2 skinny pieces of portugese sausage and 2 easy over eggs and 2 pancakes NO BUTTER. Asked for a corrected order and she was back in 30 seconds with COLD SCRAMBLED EGGS AND THE SAME SKINNY PORTUGESE SAUSAGE AND 1 SMALL THING OF BUTTER....GO FIGURE! My mommy taught me not to say anything, if it can't be positive or good things. That said, I end my review with a positive comment and that is they took my order off the bill. Well, I had only 1 bite to learn it was cold! They did have to ask why I didn't eat my breakfast.... my answer to them was "Well, would you? Cold scrambled eggs and all?" You would go to Flamingo if 1) you're absolutely starving and 2) in the area and 3) maybe you'll buy their banana pie

My first and last time I will ever eat at this restaurant. My wife ordered the tempura don . The oil dripping off the shrimp was gross. The oil they used to deep fry the shrimp was old and the cook burnt the dish. I had a hamburger deluxe ... Tomatoes look old and wilted, the bun was served burnt and toasted.n the hamburger was bland meat was dry and looked like it was reheated . The saimin was ok, nothing special. Went here for Mother's Day. Mom likes old-school diners, low-key style. They were super crowded, but we were taken care of. Service was ok, but not their usual customer service. We waited awhile for everything and had to ask for the check, but we didn't mind because the waitress was so nice. And even short-staffed, you gotta love the ladies here. Overheard this visit... Customer: yeah, can I get the dressing on the side? Wise-cracking Aunty Waitress: shuuuu-ah! Which side you like, left or right? Bwah ha ha, Aunty! They were short-staffed, but still cheerful and like having dinner at everyone's aunty's house. Food was same as usual, though the menu is now riddled with ads on every page. Weird, but at least the prices are still relatively low for what you get. Ordered the combo, tonkatsu and mahi. The mahi was super ono. Battered lightly, moist, not overcooked. The hot veggie wasn't great--corn, corn, corn. But the salad was fresh and crisp, and CLEAN. Points for that. Like the oriental dressing. Would go back, still. Their banana pie is awesome!

The food here is a step above Zippy's or Anna Millers. I been here many times and will be going here many times more. Usually their combination Dinners. If I do a 2 choice combo, one of the choices will be the Tempura mahimahi! Sooooooooo delicious. Teriyaki chicken and tempura mahi combo with fries ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ) This is a nice mix of things. Teriyaki chicken is pretty good, and fries are always great too! Tempura mahi mahi and Tonkatsu ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ) Their Tonkatsu is local style. So nothing crazy awesome by at least it isn't dry. i come for the Banana pie! The restaurant has been here for quite a while and remember as a child growing up in Hawaii, we used to eat at the original Flamingos on Kapiolani. The dinners come with soup or salad, desserts and coffee, tea or fruit punch. Meals are average, service good and always come for the Pie.

I came here last December with a friend to meet up for lunch with her dad. This place was sooo hard to find, I guess because I'm not from town and don't know all of Pearl city. It's a older restaurant with wood, picture frames and curtains as their decor. The worker's are really friendly, one of the lady's kept complimenting me on my hair =) I ordered the special which was the roast turkey with vegetables and mashed potatoes. And my friend ordered a chicken salad. And her dad ordered the banana pie with a side of vanilla ice cream. My turkey was moist but with so little meat. The mashed potatoes did not taste fresh at all! Let's just say I had better meals at fast food restaurant but I guess I cant complain since the food was free.

Being in the Central area not too many Family style restaurants around anymore this being one of the few that feels and is just like when you were growing up I mostly come here for a nice breakfast when I have one of my two little ones (as it is a lot more peaceful with one) and is hasn't disappointed me. Breakfast, I like that fact that you have the option of having a Japanese Breakfast with Saba or Mahi Mahi and the coffee is kept filled where I don't have a dry spell waiting for coffee. The atmosphere is comfortable as it feels like somewhere you just fit in. Parking is good with ample parking in front or back. The food is your basic breakfast items with the exception of the Japanese Breakfast which sometimes is a nice break from the regular breakfast fare. it just makes me think how memories of places like this is engraved in my mind from growing up and I hope something of this sort can give my little ones something to remember also rather than going to say McDonalds or some plate lunch place.

It's been yeeeeeears since I've eaten here until the significant other and I stopped by for some breakfast last weekend. After we were seated, I cruised the yelp reviews to check out what everyone else was sayin' about Flamingo these days. Sure, the place is old -- but why do all restaurants have to modern and updated? What's wrong with good 'ol family-kine-style? They won't be serving you Pacific Rim cuisine here or lobster, but you get the point, right? The waitress was nice and attentive. Nothing much -- if anything at all -- has changed over the years. The stuff in the bakery still looked delicious. I remember that Flamingo makes a mean ensemada. I'm such a sucker for pastries! I ordered the pancakes with eggs and porteuguese sausage. The pancakes were moist and yummy, maybe a little undercooked and gooey, but I ate 'em anyway. Significant other had a loco moco -- and lemme tell you, ordering a loco moco is always taking a risk for significant other because he cannot STAND runny eggs. It has to come to him straight up overhard or he gets all pissy. Half the time, he's not satisfied. When he got his eggs overhard at Flamingo, they did it right and he was a happy camper. He said the patties were good, too... homemade and tasty. Now the gravy, on the other hand... sucked. He said the gravy was a whole bunch of flavorless nastiness. All in all, definitely a casual, decent place to grab a meal. No pretention, nothing over the top, you'll most likely be full and walk away more or less satisfied. And don't forget to buy yourself an ensemada before you walk out the door! :)

My Coworkers and I got take out from Flamingo's and we were not happy at all, the best part of the food we got was the rolls we ordered with our food. The sad part about it is we are pretty sure they were store bought rolls out of a bag not cooked at their bakery. The chicken and pork were overdone and they gave us what tasted like old frozen bagged mixed veggies. The Kalbi was so grizzly it was only partially eatable. Basically we could have cooked this at home and it would have tasted better. not worth the money...

I have been going to Flamingos at least four times a month for the last 11 years. Obviously I love this place if I went back for 11 years. The waitress' there are always welcoming and talk to us like family. It's an extremely relaxed and clean place. They recently updated a few things so the bathrooms in particular look awesome. The food is good. My favorite thing to eat is the Hamburger Steak and New York Steak. Both dishes are really good. The only qualm I have against this place is I honestly did not like the Japanese menu too much. I eat a lot of Asian cuisine and honestly, I did am not partial to Flamingo's Japanese menu. It's alright though because the dessert definitely makes up for it :)

I grew up with restaurants like Flamingo. I remember Violet's Grill in Kalihi, Flamingo on Kapiolani, KC Drive-in, Rainbow's, Wisteria, Washington Saimin Shop, Kenny's, Kelly's and the list could go on an on. Flamingo looks like the next classic restaurant that will disappear from Hawaii. The food is just not the same anymore. The place just looks dead, service is still good. But it's so run down and unsightly, I don't want to go in for my favorite Teriyaki Chicken plate anymore. It's just sad to see Flamingo so run down.

IT'S OVER...well, for the 50+ years i've eaten @ Flamingo Restaurants; frm Chuck Wagon buffet & prime rib to the Veal Cutlet, the Hamburger Steak, the apple pies, the banana pies.... for all the wonderful reviews others have posted, i have to say that today disappointed me greatly. I stopped in to wait for my car to be serviced, and had chose a Loco Moco.... well, it was probably the worst meal i've had @ Flamingo's... the rice was hard, the gravy had no taste, the hamburger was not seasoned, nor tender, not tasty... i was offered a 10% discount for a bad meal... i was told, "you ate over half...".... would u like something else? once the rice is cooked, you can't reheat it better... the hamburger would have been the same.... a very disappointing experience!!!!! and it cost me 9 bucks... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! i think NOT!!! THE WORST MEAL I'VE HAD IN OVER 50 YEARS OF EATING @ FLAMINGO'S.... it's a new owner of 2 years/no longer owned by the Nagamine family... very disappointing.... i won't be back...there was no satisfaction... the meal should have been comped and invited to return for another time... but nope... so i don't think i'll be back... and i'll be sharing this tale of a bad loco moco... TO THE CURRENT OWNER.... your policy and way of handling a complaint is poor and won't win you new or repeat customers... have you eaten in your restaurant lately? there are many other restaurants to eat at... and we pay for it!!! This is an old style family restaurant where the staff treat the regulars (that would be me) like family. It's a little dingy but you can't beat the warmth and welcome. Hubby loves the chicken cutlet with rich brown gravy.. I think the ox tail soup is the best anywhere. Everybody raves about the banana pie......have you tried the PEACH ?!!!

Dining in at flamingos for the first time was a great experience. I ordered the hamburger steak. I didn't expect it being as delicious as it was. It was Ono. It was big moist and just right. It came with a choice of soup or salad a drink and a dessert. The staff seemed to remind me of an old diner family style atmosphere. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a sit down local style diner. Next visit to the island I'll definitely try to make it here again. Awesome I rate it 4 stars!

Eh, The service was pretty nice, but the food was horrible. I came here with my mom and my two sisters. It has a very "blast to the past" atmosphere. I got the Loco Moco and it was very blech. It was not good at all, the gravy was bland and the rice tasted weird. My mom had the I think the saimin? Her char shui was rotten and the soup was VERY salty. My little sister had spaghetti. She LOVES spaghetti, but she barely ate one fourth of it. It was cold and tasted worst then the kind you can make at home. Lastly, my older sister got the tempura, and it was just disgusting. :l We could've had a better meal across the street at Zippy's. My mom told them about the rotten char chui in her food, and it seemed the owner and his wife we're there. The owner told his wife to give us some pastries to make up from it, but instead she gave us 10 percent off. I really wanted to enjoy this place because of the service but due to the food I will probably not be coming back here again.

Flamingos Restaurant & Bakery has been around for a long time and is a popular eatery for the locals. Located just across the street from Longs and Leerwood Bowl off of Kam Highway. I went with my aunty and ordered the Loco Moco, was ono(good). For those of you unfamiliar with a loco moco, it's a popular local dish, layered in the following order: Generous amounts of rice; a beef patty or ground beef; sunny side up egg(s); and all topped off with brown gravy. I finished with a slice of banana pie. Note - Not banana cream pie but a banana pie. 'Was winnahs! (Very good.) The service was "eh..." The wahine (woman), serving us was courteous enough for starters but acted bit put off when I inquired about some of the local dessert favorites... Maybe she was having a bad day, what 'evas. Ah Flamingo...with the recent "departure" of Hungry Lion i'm glad to see that at least one family restaurant from our childhood is still around and still nostalgic as ever. The food was not bad, hugemangous portion of chicken katsu which also came with a drink, dessert, soup, and rolls. Talk about a hearty post-workout meal. Haha...couldn't finish it all though! It's pretty standard local family restaurant food & quality. Don't expect anything gourmet...but if you're in the mood for some no frills large portion eatin', then this is the spot for you. Service was pleasant as always. As long as you're comfortable with the "Aunteh" style service. (You know what I mean!) Lastly, i'm glad they kept their interior the way it was designed originally. Ok, so they could use a carpet change after 30 years, but its nice in that retro kind of way. The booths are still comfortable and the place is clean as long as you don't look down at the carpet! Oops, and I forgot to mention...I wish I could tack on another .5 star for having Japanese breakfast! Gotta love it!

We are a young couple that eats at flamingos quite frequently. Lately service has been terrible and their rice seems spoiled all the time. The first thing I do when I get my food is smell the rice. Their rice is always spoiled. Their food is great, but they need to pay better attention to what they are serving. As for now my review will stay 2 stars. Just about everyone has commented on this time warp to the 70s, so I won't belabor it. Yeah, I love the diner atmosphere and the local, aunty-style service. If you grew up in Hawaii, nothing needs to be explained. All the standard comfort foods are on the menu. My default, when I cannot make up my mind, is the Chicken Cutlets with Mushroom Gravy. In my advancing years, I need to make my colon happy, so it's good that they offer brown rice as an option. Hands-down, this is one of my favorite dining spots.

A good menu list, of many popular local dishes, that are reasonably priced. I've enjoyed everything I've tried. The staff has been there a long time and they're good. If you are there when they have Shrimp Curry on the menu, go for it. Their Ox Tail Soup is also very popular.

Flamingo is just down the street so we have eaten here a few times. They are very consistent, unfortunately we have just eaten dinner here but every time it has been good. The prices are good and you can upgrade your meal for like 2 bucks more and it comes with a drink and desert. Not a bad deal. Total for two to eat dinner $25. The last time we were there I kept hearing this thumping sound and I thought it was annoying that someone would have their music that loud, then I realized that below the restaurant is Princess Palace which I believe is a strip club. I know nothing to do with the food but just figured I would throw this in here.

Flamingo is a step back in time. The decor hasn't changed since Lee and Farrah were an item. I dare say that the menu hasn't changed much either and possibly some of the waitresses. So with that preamble, one should know what one should expect; a lot of dark furniture, yellow lights and booths. However the food wasn't bad at all. I went right on the cusp of breakfast time and lunch time (There should be a word for that time) so I ordered breakfast and got a peek at lunch. Breakfast was good, the Portuguese sausage was fatty and tasty the fried rice wasn't bad. The waffles had plenty of fresh blueberries. The coffee wasn't bad neither. The lunch looked like it was a good portion with a pile of good thick fries and a hearty helping of the other items. There were some service issues but the waitress was very gracious. She blamed the cook which is what any self-respecting waitress does, but she seemed sincere and the cooks were visible through a window and they did look like they were short-handed so she got a pass. All in all, it's a very comfortable place to meet a friend and have a cup of joe and talk.

Flamingo has been a family favorite for years and I mean YEARS. I love their french dip and liver and onions (with bacon). My mom loves any kind of cutlet here. You get a complete meal here (most entrees) with soup or salad and dessert so that's always a plus. This place is nostalgic for me so I will probably come here until I die (or this place closes, whichever comes first). I hope they don't change the decor cause I always feel like I've stepped into the past. On a side note...I swear the Tata that serves you water is the same one from when I was in elementary school.

I've eaten at this Flamingos for 20 years and I still love it! It has a local old family vibe with many families and couples coming here for decades. The staff are the friendliest and always talk story. If you want local food and don't mind the "mature" feel, this is a great place. I always get the chicken cutlet with rice, mmm but their other dishes are tasty too (i.e. bbq meat, teri-salmon, hamburger steak). Their meals come with soup or salad, rolls, and dessert (ice cream, pudding, jello..) But I always upgrade ($0.50) for a nice banana pie! I don't think I've ever seen a banana pie (without cream) anywhere else and I normally don't love bananas, so you might want to try this if they haven't already run out. Also, their breakfast is good. They have an all-you-can-eat-pancake deal for $8.50, and it comes with eggs and meat (portugese sausage, ham, or bacon) and nice fluffly, pancakes (none of that IHOP stuff).

A very local dine-in restaurant. Many updates needed to this restaurant and the food is just so-so. If you like the home cooked feel than this might be the place for you. Many return customers and first name basis being used between the staff and customers. The breakfast menu looks real hawaiian style local menu and lunch is very local plate-ish as well. As just decent food and okay staff goes, this might be a place to go if you cant agree on anything else.

The Flamingo chain once stretched over Oahu, with Cafe Flamingo on Ala Moana by Honolulu Iron Works (today's Restaurant Row); Kapiolani Boulevard (across Mercedes Benz), Flamingo Chuckwagon (just down Kapiolani, across the Blaisdell Center), Flamingo Royal Lanai (also on Kapiolani, replaced by Nordstrom), Kaneohe (Windward City Shopping Center, replaced by Denny's), and Pearl City, the last one standing. I seem to recall one in Waipahu (I could be wrong) and have patronized them for over four decades and visited each of those locations several times. The food seemed to have been consistent at all places. The Kapiolani location across Mercedes was my most frequent haunt. My favorite entrees were sauteed mahimahi, followed closely by the teriyaki steak, and the teriyaki steak-mahimahi combo. Fruit cup, fruit punch, and tapioca pudding. I'm definitely a creature of habit. Once in awhile, I'd stray from the routine for pork cutlet, hamburger steak, and, when on special, sweet-sour spare ribs. Service was always consistent from their "auntie-type" waitresses. It was a bit devastating when they started closing down the various locations. It was like watching "old Hawaii" slip away into oblivion bit-by-bit. I went to the closing night of the Kapiolani Flamingo - the parking lot was packed and the line spilled out on the street. I parked across the street by Mercedes and waited in line, A lot of menu items were sold-out, but the management announced that additional food was being brought over rrom Pearl City. Including dessert. So, I got my sauteed mahimahi. I'll be making a visit to the PC location soon. And hoping that things haven't changed that much under their new management.

After hearing about their banana pie, we could not complete our visit without it. On our way back to our resort, we stopped and got one to go. The atmosphere is casual and the service friendly. We definitely intend to come here for lunch or dinner next time. The pie is buttery and flaky; fresh banana sandwiched in between two layers. For those less adventurous, there are apple, sweet potato, and other varieties. So, for an excellent banana pie at a reasonable price with friendly service in a casual atmosphere, Flamingo cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.!

Probably the best pancakes ever! Light and fluffy with a hint of sweetness My hubby would be extremely devastated if they ever change their pancakes batter lol. We come to Flamingo for breakfast at least 3x every time we visit Oahu and will continue! My personal favorite is the fried rice with eggs and Portuguese sausage :)

Chicken cutlet was ok. Don't get the chicken tofu!! Mom-in-law ordered 3 different times and everytime, the tofu was SOUR!!!

Back in the days my family and i used to come here for breakfast once in awhile and its still pretty good. We came here recently and i ordered the pancakes and they were pretty darn good. especially w/ the coconut syrup. The prices are ok but then again the portions are not that big either, everything seemed like it shrank, just like everything else in this expensive economy...

Okay, after eating at the wonderful Souvaly (review coming soon!), we went to get a take out banana pie. None to be had. The lady was nice though. The next day, we are still craving said pie (and now my Mom wants one too!) We go back. STILL No freaking pie! WTH? At this point my Mom is feeling nostalgic and wants me to get a chicken cutlet plate and a meatloaf for my Dad. Bought 5 entrees (Hey, I have an Aunty too!)- and the bill came out to $49.00. Okay. Get home. Chicken cutlet has no gravy. (Good thing I asked for extra!)- didn't matter because it SUCKED! The chicken was HARD, cold, tasteless, and just gross. Too bad three of us got the same thing! Oh, and I actually ordered chicken CUTLET (da one with the gravy all over) but they gave me three containers of KATSU sauce! I KNOW my chicken dishes, and if the chicken was 'ono, I would have happily ate it sans gravy. Too bad it was so AWFUL!!! They didn't have meatloaf so I got my Dad a hamburger steak- the buggah was so manini, they put white rice instead of the brown I ordered, and it was just pathetic. They tried to introduce a "vegetable" by spooning three teaspoons of canned corn next to the starch. Oh HELL no! Even the gravy was undersalted (yes, that is possible)- completely bland, and just BAD. This Flamingo is obviously NOT related to the one that used to be on Kapi'olani. I was saddened, still freaking hungry, and wishing that I blew almost $50 at Zippy's instead! (I say this to make a point because I am not a huge Zippy's fan either, although in comparison, Zippy's food is five star quality) Shoot! And What the Heck is up with NOT having banana pies TWO days in a row? Granted, it was a holiday (MLK Day)- but still. I am NOT going back.

You remember the original Flamingo's on Ala Moana Blvd? Now that was some good food. Unfortunately, times have changed and with that, the quality as well. Don't get me wrong, the food at Flamingo is ok, but I wouldn't say it rates 5 or even 4 stars. You like ono grinds in the Pearl City area for cheap? On Lehua Street by the fire station get one take out place...forgot da name, but the food is exceptional!!
