We never come to Maui without eating breakfast at Charley's. If you are planning a trip down the road to Hana, stop off here and load up on a yummy breakfast. If you get the pancake (and I say pancake as they are as large as man hole covers) you won't be disappointed. My last visit I tried the classic loco moco and it knocked me off my feet. Fabulous! The staff is always friendly and the food preparation was super quick. One day, I'll come in for a drink in the saloon and hopefully sit down next to Willie Nelson.

Best breakfast on the island!!! All of the food and drink were delicious. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff is helpful and kind. Be sure to have the potatoes with your meal, they are amazing!

We were staying 35 minutes away in Wailea so when my friend suggested this place, I was a little skeptical about the drive. This place was totally worth it. Food was amazing. Onion rings, fried chicken, ribs, svechie, all A+. Great music. Willie Nelson sometimes plays here. Great drinks.

Had the pancake. Singular. I'm stuffed. The pancake was huge. Everybody at our table loved theirs too. Excellent breakfast. Definitely a great first stop on the road to Hana.

Bar was full so my girlfriend and I decided to have a drink and wait for a table. They only had one bartender and she was more concerned with shooting the bull with the waitresses than helping us. Totally ignored us for 10 minutes so we left and went next door to Rock and Brews, spent a lot of money , tipped well and had a great time.

Someone you know might own this place. Shh. I didn't say anything about it. It's the best breakfast in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The ingredients taste fresh, coffee strong. Don't make plans for the day if you order more than one pancake. Oh, and check out the gold records and giant Martin guitar in the main room.

I liked it. Giant pancakes. Hash with properly poached eggs. Good coffee. I will return. slow waitress, but, I was in no hurry.

We were excited to try Charley's. But our food was cold, waitress wasn't to attentive. We won't go back. Really bummed about it.

Charlie's is the best! Great food, prices & service. I hope you luck out and get Annie as your server. Don't bother with the bar next door, it's not Maui, like Charlie's is. The place is full of aloha, they'll treat you like a local.

Run for the hills! Oh, that's where we were going. Shouldn't have stopped. I saw the famous cinnamon bun and had to have it. With bacon of course. Yikes! It was a crappy grocery store bun with burnt cinnamon rocks falling out of it. And the glaze was pure sugar water? I could have burnt the standard issue bacon myself. But I have never done it! The atmosphere is early crap hole! Pass, pass, pass!

We were driving through and looking for a quick bite to eat. At 10:15 am, very little was open. I saw Charley's on yelp listed as a pizza place and thought "ugh, not pizza!" But we found parking right next to the restaurant and decided to give it a try. Wow, was I in for a surprise! They had an extensive breakfast menu - my son enjoyed eggs, sausage, and a biscuit. Hearing that we didn't want my daughter to eat pure sugar (pancakes or French toast), our waitress offered the kids burger and said adults could order a burger or fish sandwich. My daughter loved the sliders so much - she ordered two plates!! (4 sliders total). My husband and I shared the coconut panko breaded mahi mahi sandwich - it was delicious! It came on a taro bun - I was reluctant to try it thinking it would be too heavy but it was delicious. The papaya salsa on top was fabulous and we all enjoyed the sweet potato fries (MUCH better than the regular French fries). If it were food alone is have rated it a 4-4.5 but our waitress was so fabulous I'm giving it a full five stars!!!

I don't know who would leave anything but a one star for this horribly run place. Walked in and sat down. Waitress came and wiped a bit then said she'd be back to take our drink order and never came back. No music and devoid of any atmosphere. Funny thing, this morning ran into people that had same exact experience a few days ago. They also left after getting no service. Is there a manger???? I have worked in the service industry for years and there's no excuse for this. Willy, your name is on this place get in here and kick some butt...get a real staff.....just sayin' ....

New menu selections are great and the drink specials makes Charleys my favorite place to go in Paia.

This place was everything my wife and I wanted. We were on our way to start the road to Hana and needed to fuel up. We both got the breakfast burritos and were blown away with both the size and flavor! The coffee might have actually been the highlight for me - just so good. The atmosphere is a little dive-bar like and seemed to be filled with laid-back locals which again, was everything we were looking for. Don't expect the Four Seasons but do expect friendly service and phenomenal food!

  • Michelle B.

Vegan tofu scramble was yummy, added some onions and mushrooms. Good coffee, service was good, saloon atmosphere. Was what I expected. Good stop for breakfast on the way to Hana.

  • Dan R.

Not a big fan, but I was hungry so I ate all my food. Service is veeeeery slow. Maybe they don't have enough servers for the place. Our server forgot* Jerm's English muffin in the toaster. The place was very busy , this might be their spot for Sunday brunch. Many locals here, what makes us think that the rest of the food might be good. Jeremy's omelette was yumi, and he also liked the potatoes. Oh well, that's it. Nothing extraordinary, but despite the service being super slow the food seems good.

  • Chris S.

The service was good and liked the atmosphere. The wings were good, the steak tips were good, the pizza was good. My ribeye was horrible. I mean quite possibly the worst steak I have ever had. Which really sucked since it was $27. Complete waste of money.

The worst food you can imagine - Loco Moco.... Two day old rice with smell of burned rubber. Worst service too.

I swear, people, back in the day, Charley's was awesome. I'll always love this place. It's full of great memories, and is a constant in Paia that I'm always happy to see survive. And I'm giving it an extra star just because I hope it keeps on keeping on, which is not easy on Maui. That said, I haven't been thrilled with it lately either. The food is ok, but I agree that its pretty greasy unless you get a salad, you usually get what you order but not always, service is hit or miss depending on who is working, but the portions are good and the price isn't bad. We used to come a lot. I need to check back in and see how it's going in there though. Haven't eaten there in about a year because the last several times were just not great and there are other places to go. It's tough to compete with other Paia restaurants like Flatbread Company and Cafe Mambo.

By and large, the old school community of Pa'ia is unlike most of the Maui people see while vacationing in the Hawaiian islands. There are no overpriced tiki bars, no large resorts, and no spots to rent paddle boards or snorkeling gear. Instead, Pa'ia is where locals reign supreme, and bars/restaurants with real character thrive. And in a perfect example of this, I give you Charley's. It's pretty well known locally that this is Willie Nelson's favorite bar, and if you didn't know it by word of mouth, it just takes one step inside the traditional American-meets-Polynesian comfort restaurant and bar to see why. It's warm, it's friendly... and the walls are littered with pictures and other memorabilia paying homage to the iconic singer (including a larger-than-life version of his guitar, Trigger!). It's a bit of a trek if you're coming from the west side of the island, but if you're planning a trip to Hana, this is the last village to fill up on gas and snacks before hitting the long and winding world famous highway. And if Hana isn't your destination, it's not a bad spot to bum around after watching some of the greatest windsurfers on the island rip it up on the North Shore of Maui, or a post-meal jaunt following a run in with Mama's Fish House (SO good!).

Stopped here for lunch on the way to Ho'okipa. You can usually judge a place by the size of their lunch crowd. I should have known this would not be that great, considering there were only about 10 people dining at noon. I went with the Fish & Chips for $14, and my wife had a chicken sandwich. My fish tasted just fine, but the portion was a bit small. Three finger-sized pieces of fish. The chicken was a little dry and bland. We each had plenty of french fries, but they were boring...needed something. Service was just fine. The bartender and a waitress were taking turns making sure we were taken care of. Charlies also has their own parking lot. Pretty small, but a definate plus when stopping in Paia. There are several better options in Paia. The F&C at Paia Fish Market has four pieces, larger pieces even, and a buck less expensive. The chicken is better there too.

    (2)
  • Cassandra G.

Sorry, Charley. We paid $14 for a Reuben that was a dry wad of meat in between two slices of rye. Not much sauerkraut or sauce. And only ten french fries. I'm all for small portions and portion control but for $14? Help a playa out. Those extra fries could be snacks later! But that would mean the waitress would have to get us a box, and that would just be asking too much of her. My veggie eggs beni was very bland. Cooked fine, but bland. Service was totally absent. I don't know if she was just having an off moment, we were the last table before she's off work, etc. I'm a server myself, I understand these things happened. Nonetheless, she wasn't on it at all. No refills or check ups and I don't think she ever intended on returning to the table to collect our payment. There are plenty of other places to check out in Paia. Charley's appears popular and is conveniently one of the bus stops, but if you want food for the money check out Flatbread or Cafe Mambo.

we stopped for breakfast on our way to Hana, good thing we weren't in a hurry because the service was so slow! we could hear everyone at our surrounding tables complaining about it as well. The food... I've had better. One step up from Denny's. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with my eggs cooked over medium, how did they come out? Sunny side up with almost raw yolks saturating everything on my plate, I also had a soggy flour tortilla on the bottom instead of the crisp corn tortilla advertised on the menus description, which sucks for me as I cant eat wheat. I ended up swapping my Hubby for his Loco Moco and found it to just be okay. kids got chocolate chip pancakes (kind of hard to mess that up) and a breakfast burrito which was huge but just tasted okay. I am bummed that we didn't try Anthony'd down the street instead and will probably go there next time.

    (2)
  • Kara L.

Yeah, this was disappointing. We are night owls, and Charley's was one of the only places open when we were looking for a place eat. If only my boyfriend liked mexican food, we probably could have had a much better meal down the street. According to Yelp, Charley's is a Barbecue place. Luckily, there is no way to know who checked that little box stating such, or my boyfriend would probably hunt you down. He was all excited about his BBQ when we sat down, and by the time we realized there wasn't anything even slightly resembling BBQ on the menu, we had already ordered our drinks. Seriously, whoever checked that is an idiot, because not only isn't there BBQ, they don't even have BBQ wings. The only thing on the entire menu that had any distant relation, was a burger with BBQ sauce on it. So, that's what he got. His was dry and gross. He ordered it med, and it was well done. You know how good a nice juicy burger is? This was the opposite, it was like a meat flavored crouton. I got a veggie burger with waffle fries. Mine was fine, not great, but it gave me sustenance. The waffle fries dipped in ranch dressing were good. The atmosphere was a joke. It was like a crappy dive bar, minus the quirky charm that makes me love dive bars.

Best way to fuel up for the drive on the Road to Hana is to stop at Charley's for breakfast. What more can you say other than it is big portions of home cooked delicious stuff your doctor tells you never to eat. Huge pancakes, big portions of French toast and all the sides like bacon and sausage. We will be back to Charley's on our next visit to Maui.

  • Bruce L.

Friendly waitress there, nice cozy breakfast place. Tried their Ono egg Benedict , Cajun style, pretty good. also tried their macadamia pancake, it's good with their coconut syrup. Would also try their French toast, but there is no more space in our tummy. By the way, their pancake us huge, we couldn't finish half of it. it's HUGE!

Came here on our honeymoon. Had 6:00 reservations but arrived 15 minutes early. Went to saloon and had great drinks while killing time. The Maui Ocean Blues is delicious, as is the Maui Brewing Bikini Blonde beer. We got the steak appetizer and burgers for dinner. The appetizer was decadent, and our burgers were amazing! Tender and juicy, cooked just the way we requested. The service was great, it wasn't crowded, and they gave us the mudpie dessert on the house as a congratulations to us newlyweds! Absolutely loved it, will definitely come back the next time I find myself lucky enough to be in Paia!

  • Ted R.

The Macadamia Nut Pancake Place! Charley's was mostly empty when I went in on a Monday morning. Service was super friendly and the plate-sized pancake mind blowing. The coconut syrup did the trick. The cake, it was huge though. As I pushed away from the table with a few bites left, the kind waitress, Sally, came over and asked, "Is the pancake going to win?" Yes, but it was a true win-win situation for me and that pancake. My Yelp fans know how many times I've panned places for having lousy pancakes...sorry, bad pun, but a true statement. If you're anywhere near Paia, check out Charley's.

We stopped by for a quick lunch before the drive to Hana. The grilled cheese and fries were pretty good, but the whole place smelled weird... weird enough for us to order takeout and eat during the drive.

  • Julie E.

Nice spot in a cute area that is alot bigger then it appears. I got the kalua pork scramble in a croissant. AWESOME! This place is a good stop but I don't know if I would be paying $20 for breakfast every morning, and that was for my breakfast plate, coffee, oj, and tip. Am I the only one who thinks $3 is too much for a small glass of OJ?

Best food I had in Hawaii!!! My wife and i are from orange county, ca; we came to Oahu and Maui for our honeymoon and found this spot on the way to Hana and the seven sacred pools in the national park just passed Hana. It was good we did, as paia is the last real stop on the way to hana, and in Hana, it seemed like most food was people selling banana bread on the side of the road. Anyway, at Charley's, we had the steak appetizer, local beef cooked to a perfect medium rare. My wife ordered a barbecue chicken pizza. Pretty great, I think it's a hand tossed wheat crust and they add pineapple, but the highlight was a fried Ono sandwich!!!!! It was ridiculous. Its in a light hamburger bun with shredded dressed cabbage and pickles. It is fried perfectly... So juicy and heartier like a chicken sandwich. Great seasoning!!! We will probably run to paia before our flight on Sunday and throw down a couple more. In oahu, we tried the blue water shrimp stand, kai market, kicken Cajun, Shor seafood, and nicos on pier 38. In Maui, we tried local food in laheina, which was our second favorite. We also tried aloha mixed plate in laheina, which was our least favorite. Outside nicos and local food, we were pretty disappointed with Hawaii's food selections, but then we stumbled upon Charley's!!! Great server, and the wait staff stopped by multiple times to make sure we were doing well! Friendly vibe; we will miss this place when we get back home!

went with a group of folks; service was awesome! food is lacking. fish sandwich was boring and although they accommodated my request for 1/2 fries 1/2 onion rings, the rings were overcooked. I've had their onion rings on previous occasions and they were delish. I guess it depends on who's in the kitchen.

I really wanted to like this place, I love divey little places and wanted to check them out while in Paia. I cant really comment on the food cause I didn't have any but both times I was there I didn't really notice a lot of people eating at all. Service was horribly slow, the waitress was really into watching the NBA playoff game and not being a waitress. Took about 10 min for her to take our drink order, which was just 2 beers and then another 5 min to get them and there were only like 5 other people in the entire place at the time. This place ended up being a dissapointment in my book.

  • Karen G.

Second time at Charley's when visiting Paia. A must see because of the Willie Nelson connection and there is a nice collection of musicians pictures on the walls. The service was friendly, the food is good (try the Hawaiian pizza) considering it is a saloon and it was filled with people enjoying the evening and a band getting ready to set up for a night of music. I did find out that they even cook with locally sourced Hawaiian ingredients so that the flavor of their dishes really pop.

    (3)
  • Debby F.

Breakfast is sustenance. Nothing more. I had the eggs Benedict, because they make the hollandaise themselves. Thin consistency, lacking much flavor and it was tepid. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Hubs had granola and banana, which looked much better. I wouldn't make a special trip here, for breakfast. Friendly service, though.

    (2)
  • Mike A.

Service was slow that day, but that happens. The breakfast burrito was very good, and so was the huevos rancheros. Then we moved to the pancake and wish we would have had that first! Best pancake I've ever had. I'll be going back before this vacation is over..

  • Karli S.

The food and service here are nothing to complain about. They didn't wow us and we didn't regret coming in. I think that the best thing about this place is the giant replica of Willie Nelson's guitar, Trigger. Otherwise, it feels like you could be pretty much anywhere not Maui.

  • Traci K.

Stopped by for breakfast before beginning the road to Hana. The macadamia nut pancakes didn't disappoint, the French toast and Moco Loco were favorites at our table too. Very reasonably priced meal for the whole family and worth the stop.

Came in fairly early in the morning. The waitress offered no greeting and instead crooked her finger to indicate we should follow into the bar area. After asking if we could take one of the empty tables out front, we got a real glare and, without a word, she just handed us menus and walked off. Hawaiian welcome - maybe not! Walked out before it got worse and ate at Anthony's where the servers are actually friendly. Bad day perhaps but it was not exactly the end of a long shift at 7.30am. Won't be trying again.

Whole wheat pancake is so yum. Food is fast, simple and uber tasty. Plus they have quite a few island style breakfast items that seem interesting. I tried a bite of the Ono Benidict and found it a tad too salty. But i hate salty foods, so that's just me. All around great time eating here for myself personally.

  • Shannon B.

I had not been here in years. Decided to give it a chance. Not worth it at all. The staff was nice and friendly, but the food is not good at all. My husbands hambuger was like a "hockey puck". Most of our food came out cold, which made sense as we waited 25 mins. for it. I had a fish sandwich. I could hardly eat it. It was very fishy and did not taste fresh. Overall, it was not good. Will never eat here again.

  • Brendan M.

The food was mediocre. I mean it was fine, but absolutely nothing special. I ordered a Chicken Club ($12) and my wife ordered a Turkey Avocado sandwich ($11). Also, the servers, while sweet, we're incredibly slow. The restaurant felt like a place where time came to die as every little thing took 10-15 minutes despite the fact that the restaurant was not very crowded. They do take credit card. Also, if you are interested in pizza you cannot order it prior to 2PM. There is minimal parking available for free, but there is a pay lot behind the restaurant. I can't remember the exact rate, but it was fairly cheap - I think it was a few dollars to park in the pay lot.

  • T R.

This is a breakfast place and bar first... This is not a place for lunch or dinner! this is likely a 3.5 star breakfast place and bar. A ZERO star everything else... Yes the pancakes are gigantic and the specials are always fresh and superbly cooked. But the burgers they call them woofer burgers SUCK... Over cooked sawdust barely edible! If you fuck up a burger the cook should be fired! The service adequate but has a lot of room for improvement! all in all if you like breakfast go if you don't stay away!

We should have known better to come in here a bit late on a Friday night after returning from our Road to Hana (RTH) trip. We were exhausted and didn't want to wait too long. The other restaurants rated well by Yelp were all packed, leaving us with this place after finding other places closed nearby. This was one of the few restaurants that was not that busy in Paia, and there was this awful noise coming from there too (that in a minute). First of all, the food is OK. Three of us had burgers and my daughter had a Hawaiian pizza, and each of our meals were fine. Don't worry about having an awful meal, that part of it was acceptable. The restaurant itself is a shell of its former self, I think. It has a western style, with a huge bar in the back (accompanied by a huge guitar sitting against the wall as some sort of decoration). Apparently the claim to fame was a Willie Nelson concert here a long time ago, and maybe he shows up from time to time too? It looks really old and outdated. The booth we sat in had torn seats, with the foam showing through. It was that hard kind of plastic covering, so sitting in shorts on the seat was actually uncomfortable - it kind of hurt sitting along the rips. The service was handled by a very cute girl, but she didn't seem all that interested in being there. We waited for a few minutes before the busser brought us waters and silverware. He didn't even look us in the eye or say anything. It took us a while to get our drinks ordered, and even longer to actually order. The food came quickly though, but she continued to be missing in action for most of our meal for drink re-fills, etc. The bar had live music as well, but this was probably the most awful musician we have heard in a while. Actually, we really thought this guy was part of a karaoke music show to begin with! Seriously! He was playing a ukulele and singing songs that were not appropriate to that particular instrument (like the Black Crowes). His singing voice was OK when he didn't try to hit the high pitched sounds, which he did all the time unfortunately. He also tried to do some ukulele solos to the music, which was atrocious. By the end of his set, the whole bar area had cleared out. I read one review that Willie might actually be a part-owner? I hope not. If that's the case, I would be embarrassed if I were him.

Three of us had dinner and beers here last night. Food was good. One friend had the Garlic Mushroom Fettuccine which she liked, second friend had the Avo Burger which he also liked, I opted for the Ono Fish Sandwich, slightly over cooked but still good. Now, on to the service...that was sub par. Our server smiled alot but didn't know a whole lot. She was sweet but seemed a little spacey. All in all it was an ok experience.

Charley's was a disappointment. We went for lunch and it was just not good. Ok, I did order a spinach salad with fish - Ok, maybe this is a hamburger joint and breakfast place, but please $19 in hawaii for wilted spinach and dry fish - very disappointing. The others I was with were equally disappointed, too. Maybe this is a good place for a beer and to hang out, yet, for some good healthy grub - Eek! Methinks not.

absolutely loved this place......just happened to stumble across it on our drive to HANA.... BEST BREAKFAST that I had my entire time in MAUI!!!! Atmosphere was great.... and service was too..... we liked it sooo much on our way back we stopped in for dinner and drinks as well..... if you love live music.... very cool spot!!! willie nelson and friends have been known to make appearances here as well from what we were told!!! BIG FAN of this spot!!! TRy the biscuits and gravy if your coming in for breakfast!!! oh yeah...very moderately priced for Maui....and the restaurant is located in a very cool town!!! we will for sure stop back in when we are back on the island

Best bargain huge breakfast you can get. Oversized giant coffee mugs, giant macadamia nut pancakes. giant omelets. LOL, great value. Def the place to get some breakfast before heading to Hana. If you get carsick, don't eat too much food during breakfast or you'll spill it all over Hana lol . From Frommer's guide, this is one of the top places to visit before your hana adventure. Don't go here for lunch or dinner, it sucks a lot :D

It's the one place in Pa'ia to get REALLY good chicken wings. We stopped, late, really empty for the most part but we loved the food. The pizza order got fouled up, so we had to wait another half hour, but everyone was really nice. This is supposedly Willie Nelson's fave hangout when he's in Maui...he wasn't there that night (no one was...), they put a thirty foot high guitar, which is a replica of Willie's, in the bar area. Go figure. It's a photo-op.

Next time there are rumors of flying saucers, I'll just inform folks they're actually Charley's macadamia nut pancakes, so fluffy they take to the sky. That coconut syrup is so good I would put it on toast..hell, I'd even pour it on my rice. The waitresses are so incredibly nice and they are ON IT with the refilling of our coffees. "Boy, you ladies sure love your coffee!" Well I'm not going to turn down this delicious brew if you keep refilling my cup! My repeated trips to the bathroom during the rest of the morning was evidence. One star off for the disappointing eggs benedict. Although the mushrooms, tomatoes and biscuit were good the egg was overcooked which defeats the benedict-ness of it all. Definitely a great place to stop at though. Paia is a groovy town and Charley's is another reason for you to stop by.

Stopped in for lunch after hiking twin falls. Exactly what the doctor ordered, cold beer, Cajun Ono Taco Salad was very good and huge. Wife had the burger which was okay. Super friendly place. I might have a bit of a bias as I am originally from Texas and Love Willie Nelson....but this is my kind of place. Laid back, casual, & friendly. They also had the Charger game on and the Cowboy game on at the same time. Nice!

The guidebooks were written before the original owner sold it to these supposed restaurant professionals aka clowns. That's an insult to a circus clown. Good grief, what new owners can do to a good place - run it into the ground and drive regulars away. Used to come here about every other month; not any more. The *free* parking lot behind is gone almost a year now, so it is a *huge* pain to get a parking spot nearby. Better chairs, less tables in the serving areas. One dining area is near the big long bar, where many of the sports tvs live. Breakfast specials are gone. I asked for *no cheese* on my veggie scramble. Yup, out it came slathered in cheese. It went back and the cheese was only SCRAPED OFF! Lost a quarter of my scramble in that 'remedial' action. Used to have some large circular tables for local families and groups. Those are gone. Like any service industry, you can vote with your money and feet. Now we can post opinions here. Consider this a last resort. If you head into Haiku off of Hana Hwy, after Ho'okipa, there's several options to have breakfast at (North Shore Cafe or Colleen's). Go there.

I love this place! It was recommended by my sister in law when I visited Maui from Oahu. We had a hotel in Lahaina so the drive was an hour both ways, but it was worth it. Charleys is located right off Hana Rd so its easy to find. They have their own parking lot so street parking isn't an issue. Its a saloon style restaurant like its namesake. We ordered chicken wings and the sauce was amazing. I asked later if they sold it but of course they didn't. We had to get a pizza since it was recommended by family and the pepperoni was delicious. I ordered the pulehu steak and everything was amazing from the mashed potatoes to the grilled vegetables. Overall I was very impressed and told the family back home it was one of the best meals I had on the island. It is a MUST try if you're on island. And hey Willie Nelson loves it too so it must be good. :)

We stopped in to have some coffee and breakfast while waiting for the local shops to open and were pleasantly surprised by the down home atmosphere and great, reasonably priced breakfast that we had. We had the French toast, cinnamon roll, bacon and cappucino. Everything was great and really tasty...the perfect chill place to stop at, with friendly quick service as well!

This is prob the most happening spot in paia for dancing/nightlife. never tried the food. Great live music. Expect 5 dollar cover on thurs-sat nights. Supports local music-- Loved the band Wave Train. Never tried the food. always drinking maui big swells :) 5$ draught.

Consistently mediocre in everyway.....However, if you've never been you should check it out, it's definitely one of Paia's landmark restaurants.

Food was alright as was the service. If you are looking for a place to watch sports this is about your only option in the area.

If you are lucky, when you go to a resort area you find a place where the locals go for good food and fun and to welcome visitors too. On Maui, that place is Charley's Restaurant and Saloon in Paia. We had the fish, burgers and prime rib and all were excellent and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was all around fun and featured the largest guitar in the world, which happens to be a copy of Willie Nelson's famous Trigger guitar. In fact, Willie and his son Lucas are known to stop in and play on occasion. Even if they are not there, great music is provided on many nights. Paia is now my favorite town in Maui. It is a historic sugar town that is brimming with character and charm, not to mention beautiful beaches and a reputation as the wind surfing capitol of the world. Owner, Jonathan, is a local since childhood and a great friendly guy.

This was the perfect place to come and have a huge breakfast before we took off to Hana. The portions are huge and I mean the pancake was over 12 inches in diameter. The macadamia nut pancake with coconut syrup was so good but I couldn't get thru the whole thing. We also made our own omelet and it was nicely butter and also huge too.

My next to last day on Maui I got up early and drove up to this side of Maui from Makena. Got here at 7am and aside from a small family and a couple of police offers, had the place to myself. Typical tourist attraction type stuff adorn the walls; the bar area is good sized, though I sat in a table in the front of the place. I can imagine that parking can become an issue later in the day-there is a paid lot behind the place. I had the Eggs Benedict, which according to the waitress is "what they're known for." They came out quickly, filled me up quickly, and were pretty good. Didnt try anything else on the menu, but the service and breakfast hit the spot on the way up the road to Hana. There weren't any dealbreakers in my rather brief experience here, but nothing outlandishly awesome either.

Very poor and slow service and the food tasted very greasy. Ordered burger and fries, tortilla chips and salsa and butter noodles for the little one. She refused to eat it after the first bite and I kinda wish I hadn't finished my meal because I felt nauseated after. There are a lot of better places to eat in Paia.

Breakfast and booze people, breakfast and booze! I see lots of bad reviews from people who ate lunch or dinner here. Lunch and dinner aren't bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. There's a dining room near the street and a bar area in back. The bar can get pretty busy at night and has some good bands from time to time. Charley's is a great place to get breakfast and watch that early morning game on the weekend (stupid time zones). The giant pancakes are good, great if you get the coconut syrup. My favorite is the blackened ono eggs Benedict.

Oh well... all good things came to a screeching halt. The pizza sucked and I got my least favorite waitress. Bummer. Luckily, she didn't bend over in that extra short leopard skirt... I had already lost my appetite, anyway.

Went there this morning for breakfast. My son had a chocolate chip pancake. He said it was great. I had the create your own omelette and it was perfect. My wife had steak and eggs and she said they were very good. I can see why Willie Nelson likes this place!

Prompt service. Friendly. Good breakfast. I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars because of those reasons. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary but just a good ole breakfast. The biscuts and gravy weren't that great though so stay away from them. This place is huge! There is a big back room (which you don't see when you walk in) and a large bar. Maybe this is the place to go during the evening in Paia????

I want to like Charley's. I used to like their Ono dish. (Fantastic!) but it's no longer. Got the curry. Needs more curry. Too dry. Service started out well but slowly declined to sucksville. Long waits. "Geez, I just wanna get dessert! Why is she talking to her friend over there!" Typical of here. Last visit was excruciatingly aggravating. Wife got pizza. Asked for spinach on it. Never came with it. Food took a long time to prepare. Saving grace: Mud pie.

I am writing only about my love affair for the banana bread French toast. The road to Hana is famous for its little food stands along the way, and Charley's gets theirs from apparently the best damned banana bread maker on the island. Three generous slices came on my plate, topped with macadamia nuts and caramel sauce. And then my server came back with coconut syrup and my whole world stopped. I took one bite and almost fell off my chair. It took everything I had to share a bite with my family. I don't care about anything else, what other people had or tried, except for that French toast. I think I cursed out loud! Four stars for my breakfast, less one star for how slow the food came (worth the wait) and how super hot it was in the restaurant.

I love this place. The food is always spectacular, and made into huge portions. The service is always fast and friendly. The atmosphere is great, keep in mind it is a BAR and was a bar before it was ever a restaurant. They are one of the most happening restaurants on Maui and always have lots of events going on. The drinks are very unique and always delicious (try the strawberry basil lemonade) and save room for dessert (their mudpie is the best I've ever had). I find the negative reviews (especially ones about the service) very interesting, always keep in mind that reviews may not be made by actual yelp reviewers and more from people with their own agendas... You can easily check by clicking their accounts and seeing how many reviews they have actually made and how long their accounts have been active.

Nothing amazing but definitely a good place. Tried to come on the way to Hana but it was super packed so came our last day. Standard Mac nut french toast with coconut syrup, breakfast burrito, and egg white omelette. Made quickly and fresh, it tasted great. By this time we were so use to eating the same thing for breakfast I think the "vacation novelty" had worn off. Maybe not the most fair review to be honest. Service is fast and good and the POG was still amazing as always.

Terrible service, they make you wait for ever just to take your drink orders as well as being them and then place your meal order. Avoid if you don't have 2 hours to spare just on breakfast.

Service was terrible when I visited yesterday evening. When I walked in, there was a sign that said "Please Wait To Be Seated." So I did...for like 10 minutes. And no, it was not busy. There were at least 4 servers on staff, 2 of whom looked at me standing there and ignored me. Then finally, from a distance (by the bar), one of female servers waved me over. When I walked up, I was handed a menu. No smile or hello. He just walked away. Then, 10 minutes later, I was greeted for a drink. I ordered water and had to wait a while for that. Then finally my order. I asked her how big the pineapple ahi poke was and she was it was small ($12!). I thought to myself that it better be good then! It wasn't. Too sweet and the ahi was average. On a bed of cabbage. No tortilla chips. Just one sesame chip. Wtf. Such a rip off. I've had better poke in California (sushi grade) and you get so much. Since the service was slow, I asked the waitress to drop my check when she brought the food. The check didn't come until the end of my meal. Good thing I asked! I put my card down right away. Sat for another 10 minutes. Then went to the bathroom, came back, and my card still hadn't been ran! I had to walk up to the bar and hand it to her. So ridiculous. I will never come back here. If it had been busy, I could understand, but it was not.

Perfect spot to stop on your way back from road to Hana. It is nice and quiet around 630 and you get a chance to chat with actual locals rather than tourists. The food and drink portions were generous. My husband and I shared the fried chicken and it fed us. I make sure to eat fried chicken wherever I can so I've got a fried chicken pallet if there was one. I HIGHLY recommend ordering the fried chicken with a side of their bacon Mac and cheese. (Yes, I understand this is a heart attack in a bowl. But it's worth the risk!) The chicken was perfectly juicy and the batter packed the perfect amount of crunch. We went on a Thursday and there was a great acoustic live band there at 630pm.

While on my honeymoon and a long day of doing the road to Hana we stopped to eat dinner here at Charlie's Bar. The atmosphere was very laid back the service was great, we were greeted upon right away with menu's and drinks. This place was very casual attire somewhere you can walk in with a tank top and flip flops. Loved it after doing a long road trip. So I ordered a pulled bbq sandwich and my wife ordered a burger. Shortly after they came out we noticed the servings were huge! Big ol burger with fries for her and a nice long bbq sandwich for me along with fries. They were both delicious. Burger was well cooked and the pulled bbq was smothered in sauce. Man they were so good. While eating our food the chef even came out the back and asked the whole restaurant how their food was. Which now and days you never see. I of course had to thank him for his creation. Loved it and this place. I highly recommend after a long day of adventures. :) 2 thumbs way up.

Charley's was my very first stop in Maui! Located in Paia, it has a country bar feel with lots of big open windows and dark wood (but the industrial kind of wood). My flight arrived around 10:30, so of course, I had to get a loco moco! You know, to prepare for and pre-soak up the bajillions of mai tais I was about to intake. And, we ordered a chocolate chip pancake; balance in a meal is key. The food came out pretty fast! The loco moco was excellent. A nicely fried egg atop a nicely cooked burger patty atop a nicely cooked pile of rice. Oh, and covered with gravy! We were brought a fluffy blueberry pancake instead of chocolate chip, but the waitress brought us some chocolate chips to throw inside so we could have a fluffy chocolate chip blueberry pancake instead. Solutions! This spot has tasty food, a bloody mary bar, and is reasonably priced. Worth a stop in!

My family and I came here for happy hour after hiking the bamboo forest and was completely blown away by the food and service. We had the best service this far on our trip here. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Fir a group of 4 we got 4 appetizers on there happy hour menu. All of which were tasty and flavorful. I would definitely recommend this place to other young people looking for a great app and drinks if there in the neighborhood

Made a reservation for 8:30pm on OpenTable. Arrived at 8:35 only to be told that there was a private party that had been booked for weeks so our reservation was no good. The person at the door said that their system was down and he didn't even know how Open Table was making reservations, and it wasn't their fault, tough luck but we couldn't come in. Well, we also had prepaid tickets for the show listed as starting at 9pm(that's why we had an 8:30 reservation so we wouldn't have to wait in line to get in); we asked if we could use the tickets and go in, since it was only 15 minutes til then, but no, we had to go away and come back after 9. So we go next door to have a bite, and by 9:10 there's a line out the door. If your website and system screws up, don't shrug and say too bad but you have to go away. You should apologize and offer to seat us at least for the show we already paid for. Not cool--customer service fail.

From the 1970's swivel bar stools to the colorful locals to the friendly service and reasonable prices, this place has 'local dive bar' down cold. We didn't eat anything here, but did come for drinks on few different occasions while staying around the corner in Paia. It is one of the only games in town, given it's prime competition is a chain theme bar, Rock & Brews, right next door. Talk about your opposites. Rock & Brews is a modern, manufactured version of what Charley's is on its own. Charley's offers daily happy hour specials on top of their already reasonably priced beer, cocktails and wine...some of which is organic. They carry the full array of Kona and Maui brews, and know how to make 'island' cocktails. Theplace doesn't look that inviting from the outside, and could use a face lift, but once you are inside...the staff make it very inviting. We found the service to be friendly and attentive even when packed. The place itself is very large with the main bar area in back. It features a long bar with those super comfy swivel stools, hi-tops and booths. There is also a large stage where you can hear live music almost nightly. Apparently, even Willie Nelson makes a surprise appearance here every now & then. We also had the pleasure of partaking in a 90's party here which was excellent on so many levels. If you are in Paia...you will definitely stop into Charley's at least once...and for the most part, I think you will be happy you did.

First time at Charley's. My experience today was as follows: Great food. Cool atmosphere. Pretty descent customer service. I understand that it was a busy day today BUT be prepared. It is Fourth of July weekend. Of course there are going to be lots of vacationers like us, hungry people...didn't have couple of the options on menu...went with my family - a group of 11 of us. Thanks for accommodating us. Of course, we had to make a reservation way way in advance. Appreciate that. BUT, the waiters totally forgot one of the dishes! Left one of us pretty disappointed. Overall, the food was great! BUT it took a long time. I was so hungry that I ate everything...Loved the onion rings, sweet potato fries, fish & chips, & BBQ Chicken Sandwich. Definitely recommend this spot for anyone in Maui.

I came here on New Year's Eve for my birthday dinner and was HUUUUGELY disappointed. We made reservations almost a full week in advance, but when we arrived at the reserved time, we were told it was too busy and there was no table for us. What?! Then, after the cranky hostess found us a table, it was actually a booth that we were crammed into, which was not quite enough room for our party of six. My dad, who had made the reservations and was buying the dinner, ended up sitting at the outside of the booth on a chair, right in the line of traffic. I was not pleased to see him inconvenienced like this, *particularly* since he has been a regular visitor at Charley's since the old days when it was just a juice bar. Not cool AT ALL. Our server was wonderful and kudos to her for rolling with the punches, because there were a few. Our food took FOREVER to come, to the point that we had to start telling her that it was too long of a wait. I understand that it was a lead up to New Year's Eve that night and Willie's son was playing, but there were patrons in the restaurant who were there to EAT. Also, please do something about the incessant cigarette smoking at the side of the building, near the parking lot, that kept wafting in through our window, so that we got to the point where we had to close the window and sweat it out. I believe there's a law against smoking within 200ft of a public building or business? When our food finally came (the food was OK) and before we had finished eating, an opening band began playing and the noise was so damn loud that when they brought my birthday cake out, which apparently the chef had cooked that day at my partner's advance request, nobody could sing happy birthday because nobody could even hear themselves think with the noise. We might have been able to get the birthday song in before the band had our food actually come at a reasonable time. We had an elderly family member with us as well, and his ears were practically bleeding, so that we had to quickly exit without eating cake. Seriously? The thing is, I went in a few days previous to that to check on our reservation and I spoke with the owner. I told him we were coming for my birthday dinner at 8. He told me that the show would start at 10, when the kitchen closed, so I understood that we'd have plenty of time to do the birthday thing. The opening act actually started BEFORE 9, and he could have informed me then of what the situation would be, knowing there would be a cake and all those festivities happening. Instead, we actually had them box up the cake, and we left with it. Oh, and only after my dad paid the bill, did the server realize that the cake hadn't been even added to the bill, so my partner ended up paying for it unexpectedly. Thanks for making my birthday a total shitshow! That will be my one and only visit, but if you'd like to make it up to my dad, who lives there and paid for the meal, you can find the reservation with his phone number under our last name (Hunter) for that night. From the other complaints I see from patrons who were there that same night, ours wasn't the only let down.

We were having a great meal when we were asked to move booths.....the one we were in was reserved....... Then the Free Brian people were sat there. Very poor handling of a situation. It really changed the whole mood. Our server was sweet and the chicken, and cornbread were wonderful!

Charley's truly has turned the corner and is on an the correct path to excellence. The service has gotten worlds better as has the food. I like it much better than Rock n Brews which has opened up next door. I honestly thought RnB would be the death of Charley's but instead the owner and staff have upped their game a few notches and it is easily the better option for a sports bar in Paia. Keep up the good work! I should ad this one P.S. "The butt cheeks are a bit much, don't get my wrong, i love the human body, but I can go to the beach to see cheeks, I go to restaurants to eat and/or drink". This came straight from the mouths of 5 women I was watching the Wisconsin/Kentucky game with last week. I have to agree with them, I think the cheeks should be covered too, it's not something everyone wants to see, especially families going out for dinner.

My friends and I drove to Haleakala to watch the Sunrise and after we left the majestic sight we were ready for breakfast. I was told the town of Pa'ia, was a good place to stop, good shops and eats. So we turned off and drove down the main street. It was delightful, but it appeared as if no retailers or diners were open. We stopped outside Charley's and tried to determine if they were open for business. A nice girl walked by and she suggested a couple places. Well, we were standing outside Charley's, they sell booze and breakfast, so we ventured in. I really liked it. Plus, when we walked in we saw cops seated ---- cops always know the good stops. There were 5 of us, we sat in back near the stage. It was quite a large bar/restaurant. I had a local IPA, Maui Brewing I think and 1 Large Pancake (Macadamia Nut). It was so fun and good to eat. Our server was solid, not shy with the refills of coffee. Rockstar decor throughout. My friends ate: Huevos Rancheros & Mahi Mahi Benedict. Wow. All good reviews. I think the mobile YELP app description says: Burgers and BBQ, but it's so much more. I wouldn't have stopped if it was just Burgers/BBQ.

This was a great place for brunch. We stopped here before we went to the airport and the staff is very friendly. We started out at a table but then decided to move to the bar. Me, being absent minded and used to not carrying a purse all week left it at the table. We ended up ordering food and eating it before I even remembered it. I went back to the waitress from our previous table and luckily she was kind enough to pick it up and put it away for me. We would have been screwed since all of our IDs were in the purse. See there are still good people out there. Our bartender Paula was really good. She took care of us and made sure we had everything we needed. The loco moco here was so delicious. The place is definitely worth a try.

Looking for breakfast spot other than dennys or IHOP. Reviews seemed mostly good. Just some complaints about service. I walked in and was a little confused as where to sit. A sign said now serving in the saloon seat yourself. There were people sitting in the front and back so I wasn't sure we're to sit. I walked around looking for an employee but couldn't find one. I finally asked a lady at the bar cleaning glasses if I should just sit somewhere and she shook her head yes. So I sat at a booth and waited for a server. A young man eventually walked over, dropped a menu and some water and left. Side note: it's called a saloon and has willie Nelson memorabilia yet rap and pop music was playing, seems odd. A young woman finally came over to take my order, Friendly enough. Food came out quick and I was surprised how good it was. Biscuits and gravy with eggs, potatoes, and bacon. Only suggestion is maybe leave the onions out of the gravy it overpowers the flavor of the sausage. Check came quick and I was off to the beach. It was Monday morning at 8am. Overall food good service basic.

Classic bar. Not a pub, or brewery. Stage for rock shows. Long bar with lots of seats. Lots of locals. I liked it! Grab a brew and some food. Hang out and make new friends. Apparently one of the sons of Willie Nelson hangs here.

Really very good. Excellentt fish n chips (we tried 4 places) beer batter to perfection with all the crispies. Light fresh fish and creamy dilly tartar. The burgers are best on the island, the blue cheese and bacon was juicy and generous ( get the BBQ sauce on the side). Staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Suggestions were appreciated. Spinach salad was fresh and filling. The home made Oreo cookie dessert was devoured by the family. Casual atmosphere and really resonate pricing.

My husband and I just moved here and we are very excited to find this happy hour! We got the wings and onion rings. Would definitely order both again, but we'd get the wings crispy with extra sauce. Just a personal preference. Max was an awesome waiter and we'll for sure request him again. Walked out of there with a full stomach and a nice buzz cheaper than any place around. Can't wait to come back!

First time in Paia, and looking for a restaurant to sit down and eat. Most were starting to get busy so we decided to try this one since I saw something on the menu I wanted. We got seated quickly, and had a waitress that was attentive. Except when we went to order our food, we then found out they were out of all Mahi Mahi dishes, there were around 3, they were also out of the brisket and salmon. So it definitely limited our choices which we were not happy about. Mom had the classic cheese burger and onion rings. The burger was good, lean quality and cooked well, onion rings were very good as well. I had the bbq chicken sandwich and it was good, but the fries were a little soggy. Ambiance was decent, playing country music. The biggest thing that bothered us were the flies that were flying around EVERYWHERE. Overall good food, decent service, but the fact they were out of half their menu wasn't cool and it was only around 1pm.

We stopped by for breakfast and were seated after a brief wait, less than 5 minutes. I had already checked out the menu and pictures here on yelp, and had decided I wanted the sweetbread French toast with the Mac nuts, bananas and caramel sauce. ( look it up, multiple pictures of the sweetbread French toast look great!) Decided once we got there, I would order eggs and bacon too, because I wanted them. Hubby ordered the biscuits and gravy. Food came, and something was not right. The cook decided to sub banana bread for the French toast, and no one mentioned it, nor was it in the menu. I felt that substitution should have been shared. Soooo disappointed in that change, as I had expected something else entirely. Banana bread is a whole different animal from sweetbread French toast. Also, My hubby's biscuits and gravy were seriously lacking the gravy. Eggs and bacon were good though..hubby liked his Bloody Mary too.

This is a good place for some drinks and bar food but note this is not gourmet. The bacon blue burger should have been flavorful with bacon, BBQ sauce and bleu cheese but it was quite bland. The side cup of chili wasn't hot enough to melt the grated cheese on top. The best part of my meal was the Mai Tai. I'd try another restaurant if I were to return to the area.

We went to Charley's for breakfast because our friend, a former Maui local, told us they had "pancakes bigger than yo head." Did they ever! I usually don't order pancakes, but when do you get to chance to order a macadamia nut pancake with coconut syrup? My pancake was fine, but I think I should have tried the buttermilk instead of the whole wheat. I also had a side order of Portuguese sausage, and although the portion was small, it sure was good. My husband had a bacon and cheese omelet. Not much else you can say about that. Service was excellent, and the coffee refills kept on coming. I'm not sure why this place get such mixed reviews. Maybe service is different for lunch and dinner. But for breakfast, Charley's is a safe bet ... especially after a cold morning atop Haleakala Crater.

Came in after doing the road to Hāna. I have a dog named Charlie, and it was the only reason I went in. Ordered buffalo wings ( which were really good,) and a couple of drinks. We hit up Charley's for breakfast on 11/5. We each had a Bloody Mary. They were ok. Breakfast was Mahi Benedict that was really good and a cheddar, onion, sausage omelet that was good as well. The biscuit that came with it seemed like it was microwaved to make sure it was warm. One negative was how overworked the two servers were. The place was crowded and these two women didn't have time to breathe. I don't know if someone didn't show up or if this is the norm. This is a take on one visit. Breakfast for the both of us was just over $50 that included those two Bloody Mary's. Not cheap. They could afford another server. Aura totally deserved the 40% tip we left her. If you're in the mood to chat with friends over excellent food, and have the time to wait then this is the place. We went on Thanksgiving and they were Slammed! Everyone did their best under pressure and the food was D-Lish! I wish I had more pics but the good was so good it was eaten up quickly. I would have given 5 stars if our party never had to ask for a drink to be refilled. I DEFINITELY recommend Charley's.

This is seriously the worst place we've been to on the island. We arrived and were seated promptly. 20 min passed before a waitress arrived to take our food order, However sh still didn't take our drinks yet. We preceded to place our food and beverage order together and about 10 min later we finally got our sodas. Now I can understand that it may take longer when busy, but there were only 8 tables including us at this time. There were also 5 servers, so there should be no excuse as to why everything took forever. 53 min after arriving ( yes we started timing everything) my salad finally appeared. A frustrating 30 additional min passed while waiting for our entrees. My husband took one bite of his panini and sent it back. It's was cold, the meat was bad quality and he immediately lost his appetite. My burger was okay, the fries were undercooked to the point that they felt like spaghetti noodles and every time the waitress refilled my soda - she would change my drink. I went from a dr. Pepper to a sprite to a coke. Not quite sure how she couldn't remember my drink of choice from the table to the machine but it happened three times WE DO NOT RECOMMEND WAISTING YOUR TIME ON MAUI HERE!!

I don't know why but never sit in the back! The service is terrible seriously terrible but the breakfast is still good ... Id have to say Dazoo breakfast is much better and the price is the same and drinks at Dazoo are on point but its Charleys I guess

I'm starting to really love Charley's for their entertainment... I mean, there isn't much going on in Maui, but when it does go on, it's a whole lottah fun. I have seen a couple live bands play, and they have done two 90's throw back nights that have been an absolute blast! Their happy hour with a beer and a pizza ain't a bad deal, and sorry to say, but they have a way tastier pizza than Paia Flatbread! I ain't tryin' to hate, just tryin' to educate.

Good breakfast prior to a hella long day on the road to Hana. Lots of Willie Nelson stuff everywhere but sadly no Willie to be found :( Prices are on par for Maui.

So far worst meal over here. Macadamia pancake, raw dough ball. Acai bowl. No flavor with frozen blue berries. Egg white omelet with spam. No seasoning and partial cooked ingredients, spam was rubbery straight from the can. The ice tea was the best thing. I guess making water and tea bag is still possible.

The buttermilk Fried Chicken was excellent. This meal felt like it was made in a family kitchen not a restaurant. My wife had the roast beef cheesesteak and loved it. Highly recommend especially for the price. Service could be a little better.

Pretty good food, and one of the few places open early on a weekday. The wait staff was very friendly, but clearly understaffed. The Huevos rancheros were solid. Would recommend if you are not in a hurry, which we weren't and need a decent sit down breakfast. The Willie Nelson guitar was cool.

Flew 3000 miles- waited 7 years, hiked uphill, battled my way through raging tourists. I showed up at Charley's tired, but hopeful that the manager would have sold me what I've been craving.. A coffee mug with the Great Dane embossed on the side. Now that seems simple and what more than making a customer happy- would a business want? Well guess what? I left defeated. The manager told me "they are not for sale, but be sure to find us on Facebook and get on our mailing list" Thanks. Not. Now this star is hardly worth my precious time.

We got the traditional eggs Benedict and breakfast burrito both were great. Nothing spectacular but good food for a good price before the long road to Hana. This seemed to be the only place offering a traditional breakfast from what we saw. If you're about to embark on the journey to Hana def recommend stopping in and having breakfast before you go. You won't be disappointed

As huge fans of the legendary Willie Nelson, I couldn't have found a better restaurant. We go see willie again in 3 weeks, and what better way to get excited for that than a breakfast joint covered in willie nelson memorabilia. The food was excellent. My wife had 1 pancake, which was too much food. It was easily 12" in diameter and fluffy as could be. I went for the Loco Moko and the burger tasted great, the gravy and rice matches it perfectly, and the egg was perfectly cooked. We found this place in one of the "best of maui" books you grab when getting the rental car, and I agree. Best breakfast joint... Make this your first stop on the road to Hana, HI.

Came to charleys for a late breakfast .... Wow is all I can say . I had the vegetable eggs Benedict and it was just amazing, def the best Benedict I have ever had. The hollandaise sauce was amazing! My fiancé and I shared a chocolate chip pancake, which was also SO good ! (It's very large, suggest sharing for sure !) everything was great including the service, we will def be back !

Stopped in when our drive to Hana was canceled due to rain. We had heard Willie Nelson hangs out here so had to check it out. Cool pics on the wall of famous performers and I'm pretty sure the owner was sitting in the booth behind us. I'm not a breakfast person but the burrito was excellent. Salsa had a good kick and the potatoes were excellent. Must stop if you're in town. I mean it's named after a dog how could you go wrong?

  • Cindy N.

I make the drive to Paia just for their biscuits and gravy, the best on the island. The service is good, the restaurant is hard to hear in. Lots of noises and unable to understand the person on the other side of the table. Will continue to make the voyage!

It has been 8 years since having one of the best breakfasts of my life... The Cajun Ono Benedict. Was sad to find out upon walking in today that it is not on the menu :( Settled for the Cajun Mahi version which had a lot to be desired. The pancakes are still amazing. The rest of my party all had the macadamia nut cakes with coconut syrup. Hard to beat! A few mercy bites sent my way had me wishin' I ordered the same. One of Charley's pancakes is a great way to start out the trek to Hana. Want a real treat? Sweeten you coffee with the coconut syrup!

Second time at Charley's and yes, I will return. Dinner - for the two of us, we ordered the spinach salad to split and a large vegetarian pizza.....we would have been okay with a REALLY small pizza. It was delicious. We ate our leftover pizza for breakfast the next morning....so, it all works out. I had the strawberry basil hard lemonade. It was delicious. I was hoping there would be some live music....it was Saturday night...but not so lucky this time. Our waitress was a delight. Yes, eat there! And yes, I will be back.

Was not at all busy when we went (maybe 4-5 other tables) so it was nice to step away from the crowds and grab a drink. Prices are decent and I can't say much about food - we only got an appetizer of fries with aioli (which was really good!). The service really left something to be desired - not very attentive service. We had to approach the bar at one point to ask to order the fries because it seemed like the server nearly forgot about us. Then, at the end of the visit, my credit card was charged for a different table's bill (even though the original bill given to us was the correct one). I can understand some of this when it's busy, but it was nearly dead when we went....

service was good, and so was the atmosphere. I would recommend not ordering any food though, because they're just not that good at making it.

    (3)
  • Vivian L.

The food was so good . . . Mac nut pancakes Mahi eggs benny Banana caramel macnut French toast? Loved them all. Although, they lost another star because service wasn't great and they added a 20% gratuity to the bill automatically even though it was only 3 of us. Who does that?

    (4)
  • Christine C.

Worst service we have ever had on Maui. Tons of staff, but they were too busy chatting with each other and the locals to pay any attention to their guests. Skip it.

    (1)
  • Rob K.

It is hard to imagine a restaurant exists in Maui with the level of bad service like here at Charlie's and survives. Forty minutes and counting for the food to be delivered after ordering. And not one coffee refill in that forty minutes. And the restaurant isn't even busy

    (1)
  • Michael N.

We had a blast at Charley's. Passed by there on the way back from the "Road to Hana" and someone said "ooh, ooh let's go there!" Perfectly timed for Happy Hour. $3 drafts and appetizers were on sale - the black bean hummus was really good - the chips and salsa were just basic but hit the spot - our waitress kept the drinks coming and even made sure to offer a final round right before the end of happy hour. Love the decor and pictures. Can't speak for the food other than the apps we had, but this is a great place to sit around, talk, relax and drink your face off.

    (5)
  • Kelli D.

Extremely slow service. Gave water to everyone but me. English muffin was very soft, I like crunchy. The potatoes are gross, I can't begin to describe them. The only thing good was my Bloody Mary and eggs. Breakfast $10, coffee $3.00, Bloodymary $7.00

    (2)
  • Dawgs W.

The food was pretty good. Buttermilk fried chicken was very good, and the BBQ ribs were ok. It wasn't all that crowded, but all phases of the service (order taking, food delivery, check, payment) took a long time. The waitress would just disappear for long periods of time. The atmosphere is cool - like a saloon should be. It would be a fun place to watch music. But if you're just looking for a good dinner, there must be better places in Paia.

This is a fun place in a fun town that is the jumping-off point for the drive to Hana. Our visit was the second time we began that trek with a breakfast at Charley's (btw...finish with dinner at Mama's just up the road.). Great pancakes- I mean we have been on a pancake hunt on this trip and Charley's topped even the venerable Kihei Caffe. Good bacon, and average coffee. My wife's healthy choice was good too. Nice, low key atmosphere- sort of touristy, but that is what you are when you go there.

I love Paia, such a cool hippie, old school neighborhood! I make sure I and come check out the boutique and restaurant each time I travel here for work. My recent discovery was Charley's. I loved the service here, sweet gals all around and they make a mean Arnold Palmer. I ordered a blue cheese bacon burger and it was so delicious! yelp.com/user_local_phot… The salmon salad was a generous portion. yelp.com/user_local_phot… Be sure to check out the cool Willie Nelson's stuff all around the restaurant. yelp.com/user_local_phot… You have to drop by when you're in Maui.

Went there for breakfast 3 years ago and was very happy. This time it was very disappointing. Food came out cold and service was very slow. I'll try it one more time next time I'm in Maui but if it hasn't improved I will move on.

  • Zack N.

Super cool vibe for music and dog lovers with all the Willie Nelson secret show posters and pics of the Great Dane the spot is named after. Pancakes were AWESOME. The Loco Moko was a bit of a let down as the burger was way over cooked. But if cooked properly would be a great dish. Service was a bit slow but prices were super reasonable.

Charlie's saloon Pai'a We stopped in here for breakfast to fuel up before we hit the road to Hana. Fist off, during Christmas and New Years let me just say that Pai'a was a zoo, it was so busy. I've been to this awesome little surf town before and didn't experience the traffic gridlock until this time of year. Be prepared to park wherever, whenever and walk if need be. Charlie's for breakfast was fast, friendly, reasonably priced and the food was pretty tasty. I ordered huevos rancheros which was delicious and a fair sized portion; important to fill up before travelling the long to Hana. Coffee was delightful also. My husband ordered the Loco Moco and describes it as rice, frozen burger patty and gravy. He was on a quest to find the best Loco Moco on the island but he describes this one as per usual, nothing out of the ordinary compared to elsewhere on the island. All in all, the food was decent but nothing outstanding and we would return if in town again.

Great Place to sit at the bar and get smashed! We chose not to eat but the bartender had great skill making exotic concoctions that made us keep ordering more. Don't remember if the prices were in line with the value but they seemed to be. Would highly recommend ordering the ................ stuff in the tall glass over ice :-)

Our group stopped at Charley's for breakfast on our way to Hana. Atmosphere is definitely casual and laid back, more of a diner feel. It only get's three stars due to mixed reviews from our group. Two of us had the Huevos Rancheros and they were delicious! Another person got the breakfast burrito that he said was ok and another got the crab benadict which he didn't like at all, egg was over cooked and sauce not too flavorful, of course he could have just been spoiled by the crab cake benadict at Longhi's he had the day before, it was amazing! Overall our service was prompt and courteous, the prices reasonable and the food was good. You definitely get a kind of small town local feel and the decor is what one person in our group described as Willierific.

As a bar, this is a solid 5 star place for the music, the beer prices and the friendly staff. As a restaurant, it's 2 stars at best. I've had some good burgers here, but have never managed to find a breakfast that wasn't disappointing. I had the Paniolo breakfast last weekend and it was the toughest piece of $17 steak I've ever tried to gnaw my way through. The rice in my wife's breakfast burrito was dried out. So I doubt we'll eat breakfast there again, but I'll be back for a beer or two when I'm in Paia.

  • Jenn C.

I popped in for a beer one afternoon while visiting Maui and ended up having two! Friendly locals, lots of screens with different sports and apparently this is Willie Nelson's local hangout (he lives "just down the road"). Super friendly bartender, lots of seating - can't vouch for the menu but it is typical American pub/roadhouse stuff. If you're looking for some A/C and a beer - check out Charley's!

If I could give it no stars, I would. I am sitting at a table at Charley's while writing this. We have been here for over an hour and were just told that our food was "the next receipt up to be cooked". The place is empty too. Our waitress has been to our table once since she took are drink orders only because we had to hunt her down. Very poor and EXTREMELY slow service. Don't waste your money here.

When it's about 7AM in the morning, nary a thing is opened. Be it my morning-crusted, squinting eyes or restaurants in Paia, everything is still in that pre-caffeine lull. So for the vagabonds embarking on the 10-12 hour road to Hana journey at the crack of dawn, a simple coffee may not cut it. You really need to open your eyes, wake up and fill that empty belly before you drive on!!! And if the big @$$ dog on the saloon looking building that is Charley's can't make you open your eyes to their doors and gas you up with the essential caffeinated and bacon-fat nutrients your body needs to sustain a road trip, my friend, the next stop is 40 miles away =) What can warm your stomach up better than some Eggs Benedict with Cajun Style Ono. A local fish on my eggs benedict!!!! A serendipitous food adventure! A morning crucible so potent that I didn't need the coffee to get the noodle going. Mixing in some local flair to a breakfast staple really makes this place intriguing. The dish came with three pieces of wonderfully spiced fish. The Ono was still flaky and moist, with a subtle taste that didn't take too much away from the eggs benedict. The cajun spice added a nice contrast to the cream. Without the fish, it would've been like eating at Denny's with an oddly mixed theme of sports-bar meets western dive. Glad they decided to be different with their menu! After eating at some mundane tourist eats in Kaanapali, Charley's redeemed a little of the foodie fun stolen away from me by overcooked loco mocos, "flat" flatbread pizzas, and the like. The breakfast was good, the service for the time of day was decent, and the price was a bit much, but worth the new twist on eggs benedict!

  • Cristy R.

Stopped here on the way to Hana. I ordered the Benedict w Cajun Ono - highly recommended by the waitress. It was yummy, but gave me heartburn later that morning. :( I was a little disappointed; definitely would try out another Paia breakfast stop instead.

Typical American restaurant. It's just cool because Willie Nelson was there before and it's the last stop before Hana road.

In a place like Paia, where businesses come and go all the time, Charley's has been around forever. The reason: their 25 year old pancake recipe. Everything on the menu is good, but thier pancake is what makes the place worth the visit. And they really take the word "Pan-Cake" seriously. This this is a Cake made in a Pan. Order one pancake for every 2-4 poeple in your party. The batter is made with wholewheat flour and you can add blueberries and macademia nuts (I add both). They offer both maple and coconut syrup, again, I use both. Enjoy!!

As like many other reviewers, we stopped for our morning "fuel up" prior to hitting the Road to Hana about a week ago. The morning's special caught my eye: Macadamia Nut Pancakes. Ordered that and waitress suggested the coconut syrup to accompany it. She did not steer me wrong: DELISH! She even told me some add it to their coffee, so I gave that a try too: meh, not bad, but better on the pancakes. Hubby ordered the biscuits and gravy - decent sized portions on both breakfasts. Service was fine, coffee was fine, overall good experience. I would recommend this place to others.

We went here for breakfast. The service was great. We were brought water right way and our waitress was friendly. She even offered to take a picture of our group. She took our orders quickly as well. The food tasted delicious and the portions were large. My sister ordered the surfer stack of pancakes - 2 pancakes. When the waitress brought them out we were all wide-eyed. They were the biggest pancakes we had all ever seen! They were each 1 1/2 " thick and 12" in diameter. Wow! She got the buttermilk pancakes and they were sooo tasty. You also had your choice of coconut of maple syrup. We tried the coconut but it wasn't for us. It was a bit too sweet. It tasted like it was made to go on top of ice cream, not pancakes. So, we stuck with the maple syrup. I ordered scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, home fries, and sourdough toast. My meal was also delicious. The eggs were hot and fully cooked. The home fries were fabulous! I definitely recommend ordering them. The bacon was crispy, just like I requested. This was my last meal on Maui and it was a great way to end my trip!

Solid service, good / cold beer & LOCO MOCO! Okay LOCO MOCO here is really for 2 not 1 person. 3 eggs over easy, a huge beef pattie & rice. Order 1 & save room for beer #2 & a little walking ;-) Erica

1st and for most, the directions to this place was off. Thanks to some friendly locals, place was found. The Macadamia nut pancake with coconut syrup was great... Too bad I can't say the same thing about the service. Susie F. had an attitude that needs fixing. My friend asked for a modification to their breakfast burrito & grandma said "Are you trying to make up your own menu here" OMG! We don't want beans or rice on a BREAKFAST burrito lady!!! Then she didn't bring us more plates or utensils... But rushed to bring us the bill. Thanks to sweet Lucy, who w/out asking, brought us plates.

This is my second time visiting this place and we all loved it. The people are genuinely friendly and casual. I had a BBQ bacon pineapple cheeseburger and it was delish. I can't believe I ate the whole thing because it was huge, I love the feel of this place - it has a great vibe. Every time I visit, I will make a point to stop here. Oh! And the bathrooms are nice and clean. I love that. Also, we told them that we had a flight to catch and they made sure that we were out of there at the time we needed to be. So cool. Most places don't even care.

Bar review only! Nothing but kama'aina here. Everyone knows everyone, except me, of course. Lots of good people having a good drink hanging out. Decent selection of Ok beer, a few Hawaiian beers as well. Massive flat screens up on the wall showing sports and surf movies. Just a cool place to hang out. Famous for their happy hour specials that change often and are probably the best in Pi'ia.

  • Roni L.

Breakfast was okay... but service was kinda slow for a Monday... and on top of that they add gratuity to a party of 6, even though one was a 3 year old... so I paid a handsome tip on some spectacularly slow service.

    (2)
  • Valerie H.

My husband ordered the Cajun Ono benedict--fantastic! I was a little disappointed in the macadamia nut pancake after all of the hype in other reviews. It was massive and fluffy, but essentially just a huge pancake with a small sprinkle of chopped macadamia nuts on top. Would be tastier if they mixed some of the nuts into the batter. Satisfying, but not earth shatteringly delicious. The restaurant was much larger than I expected--could handle a big group. It was busy at 7:45 a.m.

Never again! Went in for a late dinner after dropping my brother off at the airport. Sat down about 8:40 and was quickly brought water but no menus. Waited and waited. Server served the table across the aisle from us but never even looked our way. Finally someone came and asked us if we had been helped. said no and she went to get our waitress. Came back and said she didn't know that this was her table. So we ordered and a couple of minutes later she comes back and says that the grill closed at 9 PM. Then she asked if we wanted anything else! LOve Paia town but I' never go to Charley's again. It used to be a good place to grind!

My uncle used to live in a house right behind Charley's and I would stay there for long periods of time. Willie Nelson always visits here when he's on the island. I love Charley's and it's the best place on the island to get breakfast. The pancakes are huge and cover your whole plate. I love eating my pancakes with coconut syrup. They have a nice sized menu and the service is always great. There is a nice ambiance to the set up. It has a log cabin feel to it with some of it's long tables and benches in the dining areas, wooden chairs that make room for you to lounge back and enjoy the morning paper with coffee. I haven't been here for 2 years and can't wait to eat here once more.

This place is a must if you're in or around the North Shore. Giant guitar made for Willie Nelson. Had the Loco Moco for breakfast. Gut bomb but out of this world. Went back for Pizza before heading out and it was excellent. 40 year old restaurant in a historic building. Good stuff.

Having just moved to Maui in July, I had not had the opportunity to dine at Charley's- We stopped in after an afternoon walk in Paia and found a small afternoon crowd enjoying the election coverage on the tele and plenty of open tables for a late lunch. Our waitress Ashley was great! She welcomed us and told us about all the menu had to offer. We ordered a couple afternoon brews and the food was served fresh shortly thereafter. Will definitely, come back and check out the night scene-

I hit this place up with my dad and brother in law after doing the whole watch the sunrise and then fly like a bat out of hell down Mt. Haleakala on a rickity mountain bike with no rear brakes. I had French toast topped with Mandarin oranges and macadamia nuts. Very tasty and both my dad (who had been there before) and my B.I.L. (first visit) enjoyed their breakfasts as well. Service was good, our waitress promptly filled my water up like a half dozen times. The menu had quite a bit to offer for breakfast including some daily specials. I suspect (by looking at the other reviews and by their menu) that this place is best during the morning meal. The pancakes are beasts (as I found out during a second visit, again with good service) and I would hit this place up again next time I'm on Maui.

It has a well designed sports bar layout. We waited quite a while for the first order of drinks and then waited a while for the menus for some food. The Ono sandwich was healthy, but kind of dry without condiments. I could have asked for some mayo or tartar, but it was passing and the waiter wasn't available. Citroenette salad dressing was very good. Good selection of beer. A band was setting up for that evening (it was 1 pm when we were there), and the drums were being practiced on and "set up" for an hour while a room of patrons are trying to hear the game- it was not a good mix.

We had a great lunch there with our kids. The kids had breakfast food which was perfect. And I had the avocado jalapeño burger... Awesome. The fries weren't anything special. The waitstaff was very helpful helping us navigate food allergy concerns for one my kids.

Charleys has a good variety on their menu. Went for breakfast and though the portions were big, I wasn't loving the food. I ordered the corned beef hash omlette. The corned beef was straight from the can and the side potatoes they gave were hard, dry and cold. Seemed as though they were a day old. 3 stars because my hubby enjoyed his egg benedict cajun style

I was so excited about eating breakfast at Charley's that I starved myself all the way from Hana to here and when we finally arrived we were seated at a table and waited for some one to take our order..... and waited......waited.. watched another table come in, get seated and order... waited some more.... and then left. I don't think anyone even noticed. Thanks for nothing Charley.

Charley's is what you expect and want from old-school Maui. We stopped in after coming down from Haleakala and headed into Paia. First off, this place gets four stars for the Willie Nelson and Great Dane connections, of which I am a lover of both. We stopped in, the wait service was nice, just what you'd expect from a roadside diner, not gold star level but attentive and pleasant. My food was awesome. Sausage gravy and biscuits, are you kidding? At 1130A on a Tuesday. Genius. My mom had a huge fish entree that actually looked like it could have come from a Michelin star level restaurant. Shocking but in a good way. I had a bloody mary which came from the gigantic bar in the back room. I would call this an absolute must-stop in Paia or on the way to Hana. Hearty breakfast in an old-school style.

I ordered a teriyaki style burger and it was so yummy (didn't look like much, but was VERY good). The husband and Eight-year-old daughter shared a burger and a salad, both were good. It was a late afternoon on a Wednesday, so kind-of slow. There was a HUGE spider on one of the windows which became a conversation piece and tourist attraction for everyone, we took lots of pictures. We looked for Willie Nelson, but never saw him (Hubby is a huge fanI). Would definitely go back, I've heard the pancakes are delicious, so next time we'll go for breakfast! Our waitress was amazing. She mentioned that she and her husband had spent their recent anniversary on Kauai, which was where we were headed next. She recommended a few places for us to visit!

I really love their breakfast!!! You can never go wrong with their french toast special, blueberry pancake, or bacon and cheese omelet. The two main waitresses are super nice. I've never been here for lunch or dinner though.

I've only eaten here for breakfast. I always get the veggie scramble with their home fries. Their portions are always different which disappoints me. Sometimes you'll get a big plate of food and when it's significantly different the next time it's a disappointment. The service is OK but I never feel very welcomed by the waitresses.

Charley's was a great place and somewhere I would go back to. I, like most other reviewers, had the macadamia nut pancakes with the coconut syrup. I loved them. They were a great breakfast before heading out for a long trip to Hana. This, unlike most of the restaurants on the island was more like your favorite restaurant rather than being a tourist trap. I would recommend Charley's for families and anyone headed to Paia.

Food is average at best. Totally inflexible on food allergy substitutes. Can't eat eggs and no substitutes allowed for breakfast. Won't come here again. No real Hawaiian breakfast.

Charley's does a great breakfast on this side of the island! I have had the crab cakes benedict and veggie scramble. SO always gets the meat lovers breakfast. Service and prices are good! You may even see Willie here!

Their pancakes are so huge that it covers your whole plate. They had made accommodations to do a Mickey Mouse shape pancake for the lil ones. Their fruits were so fresh and so yummy...especially the red papaya...my mouth waters just remembering it. The atmosphere had a country feel to it with some of it's long tables and benches in the dining areas, wooden chairs (pillow padded, as I recall) that make room for you to lounge back and enjoy the morning paper with coffee. The spring-loaded, screen door doesn't deter you from feeling like you should just "come on in." They claim they have the best breakfast on the island, but it didn't earn that title assignment from me. I'm more of a brunch person myself, but I would opt for other choices before Charley's for breakfast and/or brunch.

After a long day on our drive to and from Hana, we decided to eat at Charley's in Paia (based on a recommendation from a friend). Though she recommended breakfast, since it was already 5:30pm, we ate the dinner menu. Wife ordered the spicy shrimp scampi and I ordered something called the Okapakapaka(sp?) fish entree. There was absolutely no "spice" to the shrimp scampi. It was basic linguini and shrimp, nothing special. The Okapakapaka was a standard pan seared ahi with some sour creamy sauce and veggies. Again, nothing special. The decor of this places reminded me of some saloon in the middle of a small town. There are pool tables and a bar in the back. A few flat screen TVs adorn the walls. It really didn't have any identity, was it a sports dive? old saloon? restaurant? IDK!?!?! All i know was that the food was barely average. The service OK. I don't recommend this place unless you are really hungry after the Hana drive and you feel like some bland food.

i would have given this place a 3.5 star rating if i could. it didnt quite make 4 stars but still worth a visit. our shuttle driver told us about this place so we figured we'd try it since we got a local recommending it for its pancakes. the pancakes were good but i think i like tasty crust's banana pancakes better. i also ordered the fish benedict which was pretty good too. they had all different kinds of benedicts. if youre headed to hana or haleakala, its worth a stop.

ROACHES!!! Food was barely average and then we saw a huge cockroach run under another table where people were eating. I lost my appetite. As we were leaving, we saw another HUGE roach someone had stepped on inside the restaurant. It was alive with guts everywhere! Game over!!

What a cute restaurant in Maui! We went here for breakfast after getting up early to watch the sunrise at Haleakala. You walk in and can't help but enjoy the ambiance of old town Paia. We ordered their famous macadamia nut pancakes and immediately discovered why it was famous. I normally don't like nuts in my food, but that didn't matter with this dish. It was really yummy and the nuts were tender which provided a good crisp to the dish. We also had a basic breakfast platter with eggs, bacon, and rice. They were reasonably priced and the service was friendly and helpful. I could see how a lot of people say why this is the best breakfast place in Maui.... can't wait to go there again!

I will never recommend anyone go to this place. My husband and I walked in to a fairly empty bar and sat down. We waited for 10 minutes just for a menu and then another 20 minutes before we could order food or drinks. They were "out" of the veggie sandwich, which confuses me. How are you out of vegetables?? So instead I ordered a cheeseburger like my husband. I asked for goat cheese which was on their menu but sure enough, they were out of that too. I sucked it up and just got cheddar on my burger instead. The burger tasted ok, not the best burger I've had. The fries were from the frozen section of your grocers freezer. After only being able to choke down half of my burger, we waited another 30 minutes while our waitress stood at the bar drinking what I hope was a soda. Save your money and go to a better place!

I had the meatlover's breakfast which included 2 pieces of bacon, sausage, Portuguese sausage and two eggs cooked however you liked it (over easy). I also had a side of toast and rice. Mix them all togethe (not the toast, butter and add jelly accordingly)r, add a little soy sauce and you have one of the best breakfasts in Maui. Total $12

I was surprised by the quality of this place since it was recommended by so many people. This place was just okay. I suppose I would eat here again if I had too. The food was average, the service was average, the decor was average. My boyfriend had the huevos rancheros and said it was pretty good. I had the biscuits and gravy and they were tasteless. I have had better biscuits and gravy at Denny's. There are way better places to go eat in my opinion.

My cousins brought the hubs, my son, and I to Charley's for breakfast before we checked out Twin Falls. The hubs ordered the basic breakfast with scrambled eggs and bacon. Unfortunately, the serving size wasn't as big as he had hoped - he's used to the huge portions at the Bay Area breakfast joints. I ordered one of their specials - blackberry and coconut french toast - and my son ordered their buttermilk pancakes. My breakfast was awesome! The combination of blackberries and shredded coconut was perfect and went well with the coconut syrup. I'd definitely give this place another try.

General impression: Went there with my girlfriend for breakfast/brunch. It was barely okay. We were probably expecting a bit too much ("the best breakfast on the island"). That said, we were not impressed by the food or the service. Unfortunately we won't come back. The place itself is like an old saloon and can seat a lot of people. Pretty, but not amazing. Our waiter (Sue) was not the friendliest person. Not a smile, not even an eye contact even though the place was not crowded at all. Then again, if the rest of the experience had been good, I probably wouldn't even have had mentioned it here... The food: Ono (white fish) Benedicts Cajun Style with home made fries for me. Veggie burrito for my girlfriend. The serving size are ridiculous. The burrito could have been 3 times smaller and Eva would still probably wouldn't have been able to finish it. Then again, it was so bland that it definitely didn't help... Salt, pepper, Ketchup, and hot sauce didn't help either. Instead of focusing on size, restaurants should focus on quality! On a positive note, my eggs benedicts and my fries were pretty good, served on a bun (see the picture) but the fish was a bit on the dry side...

**Beware** Don't ask for any substitutions, and if you do prepared to be treated like shit! So Charley's is an OK place to get a sat/sun breakfast. The prices are decent and the portions are huge. The reason it's getting only 2 stars is that they don't do ANY kind of substitutions. So I am a health conscious person ok, and I wanted the Mediterranean omelet. I asked the waitress if i could have it made with only egg whites, and a little amount of olive oil instead of butter. She looked at me smirked and said "we'll see". So she brings the food out and I ask her if it was made with olive oil. She replies " Yeah but you seriously don't know what I had to do to get it that way". Ok....seriously? Is it that hard in the kitchen? All the cooks have to do is not use butter...right? I understand if they don't do any substitutions but if they are going to make an exception for you..I really wish the waitress wouldn't have made me feel like shit for asking..I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew she was going to be sooo rude for the rest of our dining experience. Whatever! I'm over Charley's and their RUDE service!

Went here for lunch & it was ok. Service was ok, food was ok (they were out of my first choice) and beer was ok. Not horrible but just didn't stand out...I may go back when we get here on Saturday but if we don't I wont be upset.

The food was pretty good (when we finally got it). It was not busy when I went but we had to find someone to seat us, then waited for 10 minutes for the waitress to come by. She took our drink order then never brought the drinks. We had to ask for them again when she finally came back to take our food order. The food took forever to get to us. If you go, don't go hungry.

I like Charleys for breakfast when I take visitors to Hana. Food is typical breakfast, but I like the funkiness and the sassy waitresses. Bar is cool too. Saw Willie Nelson one night at the bar and the bartender said he is a regular when on island. OK with Willie OK with me.

Not sure if they still serve them, but Charley's used to make these whole wheat pancakes that were so big they covered an entire dinner plate! Huevos Rancheros were also wonderful, reading the reviews it sounds like they have expanded their menu to include Mango French Toast and other goodies. Located just off Hana Highway, just a short drive to Ho'okipa or Baldwin Beach, Charley's is perfect for breakfast on your way to the beach, or even on your way to Hana. At night Charley's transforms and the back area, the Charley P. Woofer Saloon - complete with swinging Western Saloon doors, hosts live performances. Willie Nelson is often seen hanging out here.

Actually the previous person must be crazy because we totally love the breakfast here!! Each time we come here we wake up early to come get the breakfast here. Hubby usually gets the Ono Benedict and I usually have the yummy mac nut with coconut syrup French Toast. It's just delicious!! Yums!! The place looks like one of those places in the Western cowboy movies but the food is super good. It's a definite must try if you're ever in Maui! :)

We've been having breakfast at Charley's on Sundays and special occasions for over 25 years. While we wish the new owner well, we are very disappointed in the menu changes and kitchen changes. The old breakfast potatoes were great and the new hash brown or tater tot option is sooo not paia! Morale seems down with the staff, as they have to listen to all the regular customers wish for the good old days. The new chairs and tables upgrade is nice, but it has lost a lot of the old charm of the by gone days. We'll be searching for a new option unless they rethink some of the changes. If you are looking to be a "burn and turn" tourist stop then you are probably moving in the right direction, but if you want the local regulars to return, bring back some of the old standards.

We at at Charley's on the way to Hana. The food was good. We had Fish and chips (generous portion) and Burger (supposedly made of Maui Beef). The FAC was good: the Woofer burger was little dry- I had a burger made of Maui beef at our condo a few nights before, I can tell you that the patti was frozen and not hand made fresh . Overall food was ok. Our server, the lady with the Rayban prescription, was hard to come by. She brought the food over then came by once before the bill was brought to us.

i'm rating this really at between 3 and 4 -- but a little closer to the 3-side. they claim the best breakfast on maui but i'm not positive they live up to it. i had an omelet with ham and cheddar and it was actually pretty good. full of cheese and hearty chunks of hams, the omelet filled me up and i didn't even actually finish the whole thing. the breakfast potatoes was just mediocre -- i felt like they were the kind you buy frozen at the grocery store instead of homemade and tasty like at kihei cafe. my sig o had the biscuits and gravy which he absolutely loved. it came with 2 eggs served your style and with bacon (or maybe you had a choice of meat -- i can't remember). in fact, he liked breakfast so much he wanted to come back and try dinner. we tried dinner at charley's another night and it was really a three star experience for me (i'd rate the breakfast as between 3 and 4 since i was only partly impressed with my food but josh loved his). we both got burgers but they were well done even though the menu specified medium and josh specifically ordered his medium-rare. the fries were not very crispy and pretty bland. we ordered mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and they were good. we ate all nine of them and actually vied for the last one. service was decent. staff was friendly but semi-slow -- nice for a leisurely lunch or breakfast.

Charley's used to be the best breakfast spot on the island. We ate there at least once a week, had meetings there, took friends, etc.. Unfortunately, the ownership changed and the food quality took a nose dive. For example, fabulous homemade home fries were replaced with frozen tater tots or frozen hash browns. Local grass fed Maui Cattle Company beef went the way of cheap mainland imports. Killer huevos rancheros were replaced with a sad attempt at constructing with lesser quality ingredients. The new owners have sucked the soul right out of Charley's. The only good thing is that some of the original staff are still hanging on. When they leave, it will be the nails in the coffin. It pains me to be so negative about a place that was once the hands-down, absolute best on the island. What a shame. My hope is that the new owners will realize that quality food and good recipes--plus good service and ambience, of course--are what make people return again and again.

I went to the bar for drinks & appetizers with a group of people in the afternoon. The fried calamari is perhaps one of the top kinds I've had since they're almost as big as onion ring size with the right amount of crispness & seasoning! Drinks such as beer are reasonably priced at $4. One person had the fish (Ono) sandwich & he said it was really good. The bartender was pleasant. The decor has the "saloon" country feel with all these Willie Nelson photos. It appears that there were more of the locals drinking here vs tourists. This place has the biggest bar seating compared to other places in Paia during our venture for bar hopping.

Supposedly the best breakfast place on the island, but whoever was judging the award must just be lazy. The ono benedict was pretty good, but the pineapple on the french toast was canned and they don't have real maple syrup (I know Hawaii is about as far from Vermont as it gets, but you get the idea). Tacky decor to boot.

We made our first visit to Paia today to explore the area and shops. It was a great break from hanging out at the major hotels and south Maui beach resorts. Once there, we looked for a place to have lunch around noon on a Saturday and found most of the restaurants in the center of town were packed with customers. As we walked North, we came across Charley's and were glad we did. The outside of the restaurant is not as alluring as some of the others, but once inside, you will be pleasantly surprised by the size of the place and amenities. In addition, the have a varied menu with many reasonably priced dishes. The meal we had was well prepared, very tasty, and the service was excellent. When in Paia, go check out Charley's.

A cool little place to grab breakfast in the town of Paia. Very convient to stop by on road to Hana or before/after biking Haleakala. That said, the town is also a nice mini destination in and of itself, with varied shops and art gallerys. Breakfast itself was pretty average, and the place tends to get packed so they sit you down and churn you out. Not exactly somewhere you linger, but hey they sell some pretty bad ass souvernir tshirts. Probably not something I'd wear, but they're fun to look at, and the mini cactuses and wildflowers at each table are neat.

Stopped in for breakfast July 14 and wished I would have gone somewhere else! 5 of us and only one order came out right! The Loco Moco and it was ok! The servive was poor. She never came back to ask how our meal was and had to flag her down to send them back both times. Sent back three order and two came out wrong again. The omelets are over cooked egg patties wrapped around the ingredients with no love what so ever is put into the food! The mushroom looked like canned shrooms too! My Ono Benedict was over cooked. the hollandaise was salty and way to much citrus. One egg was ok the other over cooked hard...twice! Should have gone to Kihei to the Kihei Cafe! I wanted to like this place but sorry, wont go back! Two stars because the Mai Tai was good and NASCAR was on the teli!

Went to Charley's last night for the very first time for their Nightmare on the North Shore "party". The flyer said it started at 10pm. We arrived just after 10:30pm. There were maybe 2 doz people in the place. We paid our cover charge and sat ourselves. A very pleasant server came up to us and got our order (2 draft beers). She brought them right away. We then proceeded to sit there for an hour. Waiting for something/anything to start! More people showed up, but nothing amazing. Majority of people did not dress up for the costume party (as stated on the flyer). The bar staff weren't even dressed up! The DJ's were playing lame music; nothing you could dance to. The TV's over the bar were playing surf videos. Come on, Charley's! If you're going to have a pre-Halloween event, make an attempt to put together something halfway decent. I guess Charley's focuses on their upcountry/Haiku/Paia surf crowd and that's all. They don't care about the experience they are (not) offering new customers.

The waitress that greeted us wasn't too friendly (long dark brown hair and big black sunglasses). However the waitress that served us was pleasantly sweet and always checked in on us to see how everything was and if we needed anything. The overall vibe is very relaxed, as is everything else in Paia. As far as our meal, my hubby and I has to pick up our mouths from the floor when we saw the prices! That's probably the downside to this place.... Expect to spend some $$$ (especially if your not splitting a plate). We shared the "make your own omelette" and the French toast with macadamia nuts, bananas, and caramel. When the food came out, we were definitely happy we were splitting! Any-who, the food was awesome! Also I ordered the lemonade and it very PERFECT! At the end of the day, we spent $30 (without tip).Last bit... We saw the owner come out and talk to some people that knew him (pretty cool).

Solid food, good service, and they took an Open Table reservation for my party of 11. Paia is a small town and there's lots of competition for dining dollars. We had a family reunion breakfast here and felt welcome. I had the loco moco, and it was very good. As I gazed at our graze, the empty plates of all my family members seemed to agree with me.

I had the large and tasty breakfast burrito. Served wet, it had red salsa on one end, sour cream on the middle and green salsa on the other end. My wife is the connoseur of eggs Benedict, she tries it wherever we go. She gives her official approval of the blackened mahi benedict, Hollandaise was just right.

We went because we read the great reviews for their breakfasts here and on TripAdvisor. We were disappointed. The "amazing coconut syrup" appears to be the same (junk) stuff served across the islands. The "delicious pancake" was big, but no tastier. Do to its thickness, to cook it fully they had to overcook the outside. It was thick enough it should be baked. Having fallen in love with pancakes at great breakfast places like Ria's Bluebird in Atlanta and Walker's Brothers in the Chicago area, this place was so disappointing and mediocre. Their omelettes were just okay too. One issue with a server that will go unmentioned... so 2 stars: "Meh. I've experienced better."

Had breakfast there as a tourist. find it has two personalities. had a small dining area upfront near the street then its' a bar with stage around the parking lot side. The breakfast was ok. Egg and tatoes can't be that challenging. I think its' the same bar staff for the morning and nite shift. Even without Coffee, there's more than enough to keep my eyes open and mind stirred.

Food was just "ok", once they got it almost right. Way too expensive for what you get. Quick to bring you a drink, REALLY slow to bring the food. And when I paid the bill with cash, our server rounded up in the restaurants favor. Sorry, but if you don't have change, don't make me pay the difference!

Pretty disappointing - fish sandwich was stale- over fried and the bun burned beyond recognition. The chicken sandwich was tolerable but the bun was burned on that too We've been here before for some really good breakfasts but the place has changed The killed the bill on the burned sandwiches . Stopped by for breakfast as I headed on to the road to Hana. It was pretty chill, just a few other people so service was pretty quick. The plain buttermilk pancake was super good, just a little coconut syrup goes a long way. My husband had a chocolate chip pancake, this was more of dessert it was so sweet, but still good (if you're a chocolate lover. We then split he veggie scramble (DO NOT RECOMMEND) the scramble had a plasticky taste, but the side of potatoes were really good.

I walked in around 5:23, lured by the happy hr sign outside. At 5:34, I walked up to the bar and asked if the open seating sign out by the door was still valid. The bartender gave me a menu and said she'd send someone over. I waited another 7 minutes before I finally came up to the bar again and asked for my waitress. A man approached the bar and ordered a drink and told the waitress to get me a drink on his tab. This is the reason I stayed and ordered food, I thought wow the regulars are chill. I insisted on ordering at the bar with my waitress Rachel, after she suggested I sit again. I went back to sit at a four person table alone since it wasn't busy and that was available. The food was great the drink was heavy poured. By then I had thanked the local that got me the drink and a local woman chatted me up. At check out time I was charged for the drink that guy got me (that's the only drink I had) Rachel offered to pay out of her tips and this was embarrassing as she did it in front of her co workers and I felt uncomfortable. I didn't think her behavior was sincere since the local woman had told me she was wonderful and would take care of it. Also, what type of management makes waitresses take mistakes out of their cash? It was only 3 dollars but this combined with the slow service and TWO cops coming into the restrooms for a suspected female made for a negative experience. The chicken wings are good, the meat was a tad on the pink side. I had a cheese pizza with bell peppers which was sooo good! I was still eating the crust when she took my plate. This place has a cool factor and I guess bad customer service is the norm for many places in Paia. Overall, I want to come to happy hour again, this time I'll sit at the bar. I do recommend the place but be warned to look at your check.

We came for the Ohana pizza special. For $32, you get a large two topping pizza, large salad, four drinks and two desserts. The Mediterranean salad was great with sun dried tomatoes, feta, olives and a lemon vinaigrette. Pizza was good, not flatbread good but I'd definitely get it again. Next time, I'd ask for extra sauce on the pizza as it needed more. The mud pie for dessert was fantastic.

Love this place. Always live music and a cool ambience. Crowd can be a little rowdy on weekend nights but it's nice to be in a place with a 'local flare' and less of a tourist vibe. Great happy hour 3-6. Oh, and this was Willy Nelson's spot back in the day! How cool is that.

Extra star *only* because Willie Nelson likes it. I can't tell you whether the food was any good because we never ate. Sunday morning, 9 AM, after waiting 15 minutes for a table, we sat at a table right by the entrance. The problem with that is that there is a sign telling people to wait for seating right by that table, in the middle of where people would otherwise walk. That meant that people constantly clustered and walked right by our table. The same lady that initially said she would seat us came by and gave us water, literally without a word. From our table, she told others coming in that she would be right with them. She then left and we looked at a couple of menus. After about 5 minutes at this table in the path of foot traffic, having chosen what we would eat from the very expensive menu, yet receiving ZERO attention, we got up and left. I might also mention that while we were initially waiting to be seated, I walked to the bar to talk to someone and got no attention either. Not a word. I blame management. It sucked. We'll go back for drinks, but the cool thing to take from that experience is that we ended up going to Cafe Mambo for breakfast. The staff was great! We had some very good food and drinks, for about $3.00-$4.00 a person less than Charlie's. Also, the music was really good at Cafe Mambo. Sorry, Charlie's. You sucked.

This place is a local favorite and I have been meaning to give them a write up for months now...every time I go, it's delicious, hot and the service is great- my favorite is the chicken pesto sandwich...

We had a great time at Charley's watching football ALL day Sunday. The service was great all day - we never felt pressured to leave and stayed for two meals. As for the food, the chef had some great items on the menu (and is a fellow bears fan!). I loved the quinoa salad with pepitas and pumpkin. The wings were really good too -great sauce and meat fell off bones. I wish i would have taken his suggestion and got the macadamia pancakes...next time!

We stopped at Charley's before heading to Hana, and everyone in our party was impressed with the unassuming restaurant. The veggie scramble was delicious - fresh veggies and yummy potatoes on the side! My boyfriend had the biscuits and gravy, and stated they were much better than the ones I make from scratch at home. Only minus one star because we did not have our water refilled once by our server and had to ask - but all employees were super friendly. Would definitely recommend stopping here when in Paia or as a great start on your trip to Hana!

I don't like doing this but worst breakfast ever. I'm only writing this after 3 times coming in for breakfast hoping for something better but everytime leaving horribly disappointed. Maybe the older server is overwhelmed with too many tables having to take orders run food ect. But everytime my table is completely ignored and the food is terrible. Raw bacon, burnt toast, fishy tasting potatoes. It's breakfast food, not brain surgery. Will not be coming back for breakfast ever.

More cowboy, less surfer. I came here this summer for dinner with the Maui relatives from Makawao. It was a slow evening when my family strolled in and looked for a table suitable for eight hungry adults. They gave us a huge round table in the "saloon" area which looked like it could seat more than ten. All of a sudden the live music starts and we immediately realize that the bar area is not a good decibel level for my grand uncle and his hearing aid. We relocated to a much smaller but cozier location in the front room by the street. After all of this shifting and moving we finally are seated and ready to order. Nothing on the menu screamed out to me but the special of the night was a sausage and pepper pasta that sounded pretty good to me. It just didn't feel like what a meal on Maui should be. Some of the others got the Stir fried Ono and the Chicken Marsala and we're quite satisfied with their dishes. Charley's really doesn't give you many choices for entrees. There are only five entrees and four pasta dishes but I'm guessing that they are expecting you to order from their extensive pizza and burger list. The desserts far outshine their dinner entrees. I absolutely went crazy for their Bananas Foster and my brother and auntie loved the Chocolate Lovers' cake. The bananas foster was served with a huge serving of vanilla ice cream and the warmest, sweetest cooked bananas to go with it. I was in heaven. All of that brown sugar was sure to give me cavities. The Chocolate Lovers' cake is definitely that. It is for chocolate lovers. It is pretty dense and the flavor of chocolate is deep and almost concentrated. Not my pick but the chocolate people in my family loved it. Overall a good meal. I was amused by the over-sized gigantic guitar in the saloon, but the live music was not the best for a family dinner. The fact that the desserts outshined the dinner make me wonder about their cooking abilities, but I would definitely go with the breakfast here. The breakfast menu looks better than the dinner menu for sure. A great place for a brewsky and some live music if you are a cowboy.

Just went here for breakfast on the way to Hana. There was no wait when we got here around 8. He service wasn't top notch but the pancakes were AMAZING! The huevos rancheros were also really good.

Interesting joint in Paia. Willy Nelson is an owner, very western feel but plays Hawaiian music. I guess pretty Maui - Hawaiian / Haole tourist feel. Coconut French Toast was yummy, coffee was meh. Waitress was very personable. Interesting people watching. Shoulda taken a picture with the gigantic guitar.

Eggs Benedict; solid. Hash; works. Coffee; tastes like a truck stop in Paducah. For what it is, a breakfast joint in a surf town in Maui, it works. It's no Wailana Cafe on Oahu by any stretch, I hear Willy is a part owner... I'm sure they have some happening nights here when he makes an appearance, but breakfast... It'll work after a sunrise on Haleakala. But don't expect anything special. Beware of the surf bum/panhandlers out front on the sidewalk. The only thing this place has going for it as far as a breakfast joint goes is nice friendly waitresses. Usually that means excellent breakfast but in this case it's merely average.

Had lunch here at 1 o'clock today after our waterfall adventure and it started quite nicely since we were seated right away. We placed our order immediately because we only had an hour of permitted parking which we didn't think we'd have a problem complying with. What we didn't realize was the fact that it was going to take 50 minutes to finally get our orders after inquiring about it from our waitress. There was just four of us and we didn't order anything special just a chicken salad, vegan burger and bbq chicken sandwich. The people who came in after us got their food first and all our waitress could say was "our food was on its way". With only 10 minutes to spare we had to rush and down our food and drinks unable to enjoy the experience. Oh, and did I mention that our fries did show up 5 minutes after our food was served? The waitress did recognized their shortcoming and didn't charge us for the salad but the experience at this establishment has left a bad taste in my mouth. Needless to say we won't be coming back or recommending this place to anyone.

We went here to eat breakfast and it was descent. Then we decided on our last night in Paia we wound eat here for dinner. We wanted ribs but they ran out so we decied on the rib eye steak. It was good but the veggies that were as a side were mostly stir fried peppers. Some zucchini. My son wanted pasta so we ordered the keiki size and the size of his portion was the same size as a cup of soup. Even our server gave us us a look like " I know it's super small." For $6 dollars I think the portion should at least be a bowl. We wanted to pay our bill but the credit card machine went down. Our server came by to tell us the status on whether they'll would be able accept credit. We waited for at least 20 min and finally we got fed up waiting and paid cash. I get that this restaurant has history but I won't be returning. Disappointed that this was our last dinner in beautiful Paia.

The food was wonderful. But the waitress we had - long brown hair in a pony tail, maybe early 30's...she ruined it. Gave a nice tip and she had the audacity to ask for more. That is completely rude and pathetic. A tip is a courtesy, not a requirement!!! Very unprofessional.

Greasy spoon type of place. Breakfast is good, nothing amazing. Nothing really stands out. Service can be hit or miss. Place is rustic. I believe Willie Nelson owns it.

Updating my review to 4-stars (would have rated 3.5 if I could). We went in a few days ago, and the service was lousy. Food was still pretty darn good, but we waited at the front door for at least 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. Once we were seated, it was another 10 minutes before we were brought our menus. Service was just slow overall. I would still return for breakfast, but that's mainly because it's pretty much the only decent breakfast joint in Paia.

Best breakfast we've had so far! Highly recommend you try Charley's at least once. You won't regret it. I had the hue is rancheros and my wife had the veggie scramble. Both were very flavorful and they got my eggs just right.

Place sucks. Lost respect for W Nelson as it seems there is a budget issue with the amount of 'saloon decor' and there is generic shit hanging behind bar and other walls are bare. Gotta get their shit together before Rocking Brews opens and puts them out of biz.

Ate dinner here on a Tuesday night in January with my family. Not very busy around 6:30, so we got a table right away. Others in my family had arrived earlier to listen to the band playing (Howard Ahia and Friends; no cover; i decided his voice reminded me of Sting... and then they played a Police song!) and have a drink. By sitting in the middle of the restaurant, we could hear the band playing and have a conversation at our table without screaming. I had the "volcano" taro burger even though our waitress didn't recommend it because she doesn't like Taro. I like to give different veggie burgers a try. This was similar to other potato-based burgers, which are always mushy in the middle, but still tasty. I usually eat them with a fork. The bun also had taro, in it, which made it purple! So I'd recommend it if you want to try something different. My mai tai was pretty good too. My bf had the ribs and liked them. So as the only place in Paia with regularly scheduled live entertainment, it's worth checking out for fun and food.

Great place, beer, TV. The have old style saloon doors if you enter the side by the parking lot. Very Cool! They have local beer on tap which is nice to try. TV's where great, they also control them from there ipad so it was like wow very up to date and modern bar. The bartender was nice, easy on the eyes, with good music playing in the background. Had a few hours to kill before our flight back to Oahu and we stopped in, a definite cool bar if you need a drink. Looks like they have some nice live music as well.

Worst service ever, the eggs Benedict sucked and the bloody Mary tasted like toilet water

Would of been a 4 if it weren't for the blond waitress that never smiled or said more than 2 words. Service was not very good. The turkey panini sandwich was great. Chips and salsa were good and priced right $3. Hummus was good. The kids got personal pizzas for around $9. More of a bar atmosphere, clientele than a restaurant. Seems like it would be a great place to watch a band. Steven Tyler rocked there last year! Went to Paia twice.
