Fabulous sushi. Very very fresh and a great combination of ingredients. The presentation was superb. People that think the prices are expensive don't understand the price of sushi in Hawaii. Everything cost a little more now but this is worth it. I brought a party of three and we ate four rolls.three would've been enough. The rolls are large

With hit or miss customer service and a few overpriced menu items, I still find myself returning to Makawao Sushi. Maybe it's because of the slim pickings that the cowboy town has to offer after dark, but I can't deny there's a certain charm to this sushi/ice cream bar (open 'til 9pm). The sushi is decent, and the ice cream and coffee drinks don't disappoint (I like their iced americano on warm days). It's BYOB, and the Rodeo General Store's beer fridge is just a few doors down, making Makawao Sushi a convenient option for a low-key night on the town.

Despite a chilly afternoon spent at Haleakala National Park, I was in the mood for sushi when we headed back down. After searching for places on the way home, we headed to the cute town of Makawao. In addition to sushi, this rustic-looking establishment sells coffee, ice cream, sandwiches and other miscellaneous stuff. My experience with sushi in Hawaii is that it seems to be much more expensive and in general doesn't compare to what you can get on the mainland. That held true again, although the sushi here was better than any I've had in Hawaii so far. Our order included some NIGIRI (salmon, scallop and yellow), rolls (SPICY TUNA, SPICY YELLOWTAIL and VEGGIE MAKI) and the AHI POKE. And what do I mean by expensive? Well, the nigiri is around $5, but that's only per piece, not for an order of two pieces. You won't be able to eat here for less than $30, unless you're leaving hungry. At least you're supporting a small family-owned business. Closed on Tuesdays.

We came here for dinner on New Year's Eve as it was one of the few places on the island open. There were only three tables of customers when we were there. The service was slow, the menus and table were sticky and the food was way over-priced for its quality (and no re-fills on iced tea). Granted, it looked like there was only one guy making the rolls that evening since it was a holiday so it could be a contributing factor to how slow the service was.
(1)Debbie A.
Very casual, basic place that serves sushi. Found it expensive for what you get. One roll was served hot, that it was mushy. Spicy tuna wasn't bad.
(2)Andrew G.
Super, super fresh sushi!!! This place is unassuming on the outside, but if you stay the course you will be rewarded with first-class rolls of sweet sushi goodness! With no corkage fee, BYOB as much as you like (we brought 4 bottles of wine, don't judge). This place rocks!!! Highlights: 007 roll, dynamite roll, hand roll with spicy tuna. It appears you cannot go wrong here!

Another visit to Makawao Sushi & Deli left my son in law and I in awe of the outstanding high quality sushi the owners, Ben an Kim consistently prepare. We had an assortment which included a Catapillar, a Rock & Roll, and a Dynamite and each one was better than the last. Ben is very fastidious in his preparation, and waiting and watching him just adds to the enjoyment when Kim presents the finished product for our chop stick attack. The classical music background is a nice addition to the friendly atmosphere. CANT WAIT TO GET BACK OVER THERE -- a long drive from Napili--and well worth it!

I just stopped in to get a little snack/lunch. Wasn't sure what kind of place this was. You can buy ice cream (hand scooped, local brand), sandwiches and, there's a small sushi bar! The man behind the sushi bar sounded japanese to me. I asked him what was fresh and he said a number of fish - my ears stopped hearing after he said "mirugai", which I said I liked! I ordered a hamachi (also on his "fresh" list) and a mirugai nigiri sushi, to go. After, I wished I hadn't ordered to-go - This was the BEST sushi I have had in a LONG, LONG time. He had packed a few extra little pieces of mirugai for me, alongside my order! It was briny, almost crisp delicious-ness. The nigiri was made with just a little, finger sized amount of rice, just right, for me. The hamachi was very flavorful. Amazingly good. I liked that he served yamasa shoyu (both regular and low-sodium), as that is the shoyu I prefer. It wasn't cheap (each piece cost $4.25), but I am glad I got it! I almost turned around to go back ...
(5)Travis H.
Family-owned, beautiful restaurant that took extra steps to make our food amazing in taste and presentation.
(4)TR T.
Great little place for sushi. Arrived for an upcountry drive and the chef was outback sharpening his knife, waited until they opened and had wonderfully sliced (sharp knife!) fish, good tea and a pleasant visit. Always go back when we can.

As a local, I get asked a lot where the best of the bests are for restaurants around the island. Even though I have only been on island for 5 years, I have narrowed my top selections down to just a few....and Makawao Sushi and Deli is DEFINITELY one of them! I almost hate to give it away, but I support all local business (especially smaller ones) and this one tops the charts in my neck-o-da-woods! If you go, you can guarantee a few things: 1) only the top choice grade, freshest fish will be used for their sushi; 2) you will only see 2 workers - the owners - the chef and his wife who waits tables; 3) you will have no trouble getting a seat - even though there's only about 20 or so - its one of those "unique-hole-in-the-wall-best-dive-bar" placs. No need to call to make reservations. *FYI- this place is a B.Y.O.B, which is kinda convenient if you have a great bottle of wine or particular beer you would like to drink, they have glasses available to use at no charge. If you didn't bring anything and want something, there is the Rodeo General store 3 doors up with all the amenities. Basically...I love this place! We get great service, almost always have the place to ourselves, for the price you get more sushi than almost every other sushi bar on island, and I have yet to taste anything else more delicious and fresh! If you are not fully satisfied, I sincerely apologize and advise you to try again...and again...and again!
(5)Richard R.
I have only come here for the sushi - 3 times - and it is amazingly good. Don't let the 'deli' part throw you off, the sushi is fresh, delicious, and meticulously prepared. It is BYOS - you can buy sake or beer a few doors down at the Rodeo and bring it in. This place definitely gets reverse style points - it is so unassuming and so local, a big plus in Maui, and the wonderful sushi seems so out of place. You can't go wrong.
(5)Y R.
I ate here about two years ago and still remember my experience vividly. There were 8 of us and we ran up an insane bill after two hours in there. We paid and left a 20% tip...so we're looking at +$600 all in. The Korean lady that runs the place had the nerve to chase out after us as we're getting into our cars yelling that she made a mistake on the bill. She makes me go back in to pay an extra $7..at which point I just tell her to take it out of her tip for her insolence. We haven't been back since. When will these restaurant proprietors learn that it is so much more financially rewarding to keep a customer happy by taking the smallest of financial hits for a long-term "annuity". Restaurants often lose sight of the fact that their most important investments are in the customers themselves.
(1)Jenny F.
Sushi heaven. The quality of the sushi and the skill in which it is prepared is the best sushi I've ever had. The Philadelphia roll is amazing, by the way....it all is. Please treat yourself to this when you are in Maui; you won't be sorry.
(5)George T.
Stopped in for an ice coffee and nigiri hamachi. Both were very good and hit the spot!
(4)Mikael G.
I have no idea if this place is good for Sushi but I had a BLT sandwich and it was easily the best BLT I have ever had. Completely unexpected. Who orders a BLT at a sushi place? Well I did and it was a great decision. The bread tasted like they had just baked it. Maybe it was a fluke but damn, that was a good sandwich. I can't stop thinking about it.
(5)Roxanne B.
Open for business but no sushi ! The owner still needed to "pick up fish at the airport". We only could order California rolls. Why have a huge sign outside advertising sushi if you don't have it? California roll was, well a California roll.
(2)Olga V.
Cooked salmon in a Philly roll? Spider roll drowned in sweet sauce? Superslow service? And $20 per roll, on top of everything? Simply stay away from this place.
(1)Tony S.
Let me tell you already so you don't have to ask. EVERYONE will recommend Sansei for sushi when you're in Maui. Sansei literally translates to third generation. AKA american sushi. When someone says, I should try the "panko crusted ahi roll", I pass. Cream cheese in a sushi roll simply isn't for me. If you're in the mood for more traditional Japanese sushi in a hole in the wall environment in a great little cowboy town then go here. The place is run by a couple who really take their time with their food. There's a store next to it where you can buy beer since it's BYOB. The only knock is there wasn't a whole lot of variety in the combination place. I'd suggest getting the sushi a 'la carte.
(4)BrokeDaMou F.
I stopped in for lunch one rainy day, and decided to have some Ramen. Biggest mistake I've made. To me, it was nothing more than packaged Top Ramen served in a bowl. I can never recommend that. 1 star. Didn't have sushi, but thought I'd warn you not to order any noodles here.
(3)Anthony S.
I know that everything is extra expensive in Hi, but this place topped it for me. The sushi is excellent quality, but the prices were far too high for what you get. The place was recommened by two different locals but I just don't get it, there is no reason one piece of nigiri should be $5. It just isn't worth it.
(3)Humphrey J.
The sushi was so good we ordered twice. It was insanely fresh and I am pretty sure we were the last customers of the day. We got sake from the store 2 doors down and had an awesome night. We ordered normal rolls, not the specialty rolls so we didn't feel like it was too expensive. Can't wait to go back!
(5)Ryan W.
Tiny mom and pop place with great sushi.
(5)Peter L.
We had the rainbow roll and salmon skin roll both of which were very good. The rainbow roll was more expensive than usual but worth it given that the fish was fresh and it wasn't loaded with rice. Now the down side why we won't be back. The ambiance was unappetizing in that the waitress/cashier/owner (?) looked very worn down and the sushi chef looked liked a teenager and both could not work up a smile. Also I asked if they was anything I could order for my kids. The owner (?) said they had udon noodle so I ordered two bowls for my kids. Nothing special about the udon soup - small bowl with few vegetables. However I was shocked when the bill came and she charged us $10.99 for each bowl of noodle. If you just want good sushi and are willing to pay for it and don't care about theambiance then this is the place. Overall we won't be back.
(3)Chris T.
Really disappointed in service and quality of the food. This is the second time I've tried makawao sushi and deli and I will not go back. Very unfriendly and missing the aloha spirit. The food is poor quality and dissappoibting. Microwaved instant ramen is something I'd expect from a hole inthe wall noodle shop for $3 not the $9 I was charged. If you're stopping in to grab a scoop of ice cream maybe it's worth a stop. Otherwise there is much better food in Makawao.
(1)Conrad B.
Very good! Generous portions of fish with the sushi! Would and did go back. Owners also make one feel welcome. Good coffee and ice cream also.
(4)SunShine L.
The sushimi may be ok but I was very dissapointed with our rolls. Six piece rolls with small amounts of fish. Strange ambiance, hard to get refills on water. Stick with coffee and pastry's. Not recommended.

My family and I went up to Haleakala today, and on the way back I started yelling for a sushi restaurant nearby. I came across the reviews for Makawao sushi & deli, and it looked great so we went to check it out. Oh man, this place is great! I actually created a yelp account just so I could rave about this place! Do not be frightened by the deli look and feel. The decor might not be fancy, but the fish is incredibly fresh and delicious. We ordered a 17 piece sushi combo, rainbow roll, tempura shrimp roll, and a spicy tuna roll. All of it was great, and the rainbow roll had so much fish on it that my father in law had a hard time picking it up (still nicely porportioned pieces though). Service was great (food took a bit but it was meticulously prepared), and they have amazing ice cream for dessert (enter the benefits of it being a deli). This place is BYO, so you can go next door to the market and pick it up yourself. All food on Maui is more expensive for the same thing on the mainland, but the quality was great and I liked it even better than Sensai in Kapalua. Higly recommended if your going to Haleakala or coming back from Hana. I will be back next time I'm in Maui. Thanks!
(5)John J.
The fish are so fresh! Had the poke, salmon roll and eel roll. A bit pricey. More expensive than NYC but quality was excellent!
(5)Rick P.
I stumbled upon this gem through trip advisor. Now, I'm from the prairies in Canada and though we have limited access to great sushi here, I have spent time in Vancouver and Japan and have experienced great sushi. This place is AWESOME. Ben the chef really gets fresh fish and knows how to put together the ingredients for a truly memorable cullinary experience. The decor is nothin to write home about but, that's not why your there...it's the sushi. thanks to my new friend Ben for the best Rainbow Roll in the world...9 inches long and 3 inches high. Can't believe I was able to finish it, and MOSTLY FISH NOT RICE.
(5)Hannah A.
I have never in my entire life seen such an expensive place for sushi. no wonder no one was here when we sat down! it says $$ but it should be $$$$. I mean $29 for 6 pieces of sushi? give me a break.
(1)Caitlin P.
Found this place on yelp, grabbed a six pack & made the drive from Paia, started to doubt our decision after we parked, but once we saw the food we knew we had made a great choice. This may not be saying much as we are from Virginia, but we had the tastiest, freshest sashimi of our lives at Makawao Sushi & Deli. It's been four months since we ate here, and we still talk about it.
(5)Teresa F.
Though I haven't eaten at all the many sushi spots in Maui, this was one of two of my favorites. Casual, local gem. Fantastic sushi.
(4)Teamguava M.
My favorite place for sushi!!! Seriously best sushi ever. It's quiet and relaxing. It's BYOB. Some people don't like to go there because of the service but the lady is much nicer
(5)Y T.
It's a little cafe/deli style sushi joint and Korean staffs run it. I was impressed with the Nigiri quality but my husband ordered rolls and it wasn't good. I tried it (rolls) and yes, it was bad. I would stick with Nigiri. It was shockingly expensive for what you get, so I won't recommend this place because there is a better place you can go in Maui. Locals recommend Makawao Sushi & Deli quite often, but I highly recommend to go to Kojima's Sushi Bar if you want to try a REAL DEAL.
(3)Kristan D.
LOve this place! What a great find! Don't worry you can BYOB! The Poke was delicious almost as good as my husbands! The sushi was so good and fresh. Don't worry when you first walk in your thinking what have I gotten myself into but buy a six pack from the local store up the street and sit down and relax. Order slow because they are really fast with the preparation. They don't rush you so taken your time and enjoy!! Mahalo!
(4)Bernhard F.
ovedsized soft sushi, much thicker than a normal sushi would be in other places. And BYOB, just go to the small store to the left and buy your alcohol of choice. The owner just ran out to bring an umbrella to a customer who forgot it. Nice upcountry Maui moment.
(5)Cierra R.
Family run, casual and delish. Hands down, the best sushi around!
(5)Harold J.
Unexpected Great sushi, until you pay, and then want a to-go can of Coke and then told the separate charge must be paid in cash because it's not the $10 minimum for a charge. This really pissed me off, spend $90 and you get this type of ending. Technically if this was reported to their credit card providers they could have their services revoked.
(2)Angie N.
My husband and I live in Makawao and we often frequent Makawao Sushi & Deli for date night. It's BYOB, which is amazing. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. I know some reviews here say service is slow and the staff is rude, but I think these people don't really understand business on Maui. Yes, it is slower (ALL places are slower) and the owners are from Korea (I believe); even though they have been here for nearly 20 years, their short responses could be taken as rudeness by some. I swear to you though, they are truly kind and if you take the time to talk to them you will see that I'm right. The sushi is super fresh and the presentation is spectacular. My favorite rolls are the Philly roll (who cares if the salmon is cooked? It's DELICIOUS) and the 69 roll. Yum, yum, yum.
(5)John M.
Only been here twice. Mostly a place of convenience with sushi, coffee, and ice cream. It gets a 4 for being close to Haleakala with fresh seafood (i love Asian food so it's a wonderful surprise that sushi is about the only food option halfway up the mountain). Terribly expensive and by no means the best around.
(4)Rachael T.
I adore the couple who own and work Makawao sushi. They are authentic, hard working, and very friendly. I think the sushi is great! I love the salmon skin hand roll, caterpillar roll, rainbow roll, and even the basic California roll is always fresh tasting! For those of you, who like me, prefer to take away dinner to eat slovenly in the privacy of your own home.... do not bother to call ahead to make a to go order. They will not start making it until you arrive. It takes a small bit of time, but it is sushi, made fresh to order, and it really is worth the wait!
(4)Mandy M.
There is something about rude asian vendors. You know it's gonna be worth it, you know they can afford to be rude because.... She was so rude the first time we went there I walked out without finishing my sentence. But I got a peak of a customer's sushi and it stuck with me. We went back 2 days later and we had the best sushi: simple, crips and fresh, (I felt it was so fresh it was hard to believe 7 miles from the shores it can still be THIS fresh)generous portions, beautifully assembled, and I didn't feel any pieces of the sampler was less desirable than the other. It was just pure joy. It sure wasn't cheap but what was in Maui? If I ever come back to this island in Paradise, my first trip will be back to Makawao Sushi.
(5)Clifford G.
On point sushi. Best poke I've had. Perfect little translucent cubes, I add avo. Perfect. The Kama is also delicious.
(5)Ken M.
Fine little place to get coffee and get out of the sun for a while. The sushi side of the shop wasn't open when we stopped by (on a weekday morning). Friendly place --- the woman running the counter had a nice chat with one of the customers while we finished up our tea.
(3)Jong-Rak K.
my fav place to eat sushi. i might be bias.
(5)James T.
Food = 4 Price = 4 Experience = 4 nice fresh poke and large sushi cuts
(4)shawn p.
What an amazing place for delicious fresh sushi! Every single thing we had was amazign.
(5)Nell C.
This pricy sushi restaurant in Upcountry Makawao is definitely a place to visit while in Maui. Fish is fresh and great salad.
(4)Michelle L.
We stopped in here on our way back from Kula County Farms. We were here on a Sunday, so a lot of there restaurants were closed. After looking around here, we stopped in. It's very odd, it's exactly what the name implies-- a sushi bar and deli together. Never seen anything like it. We ordered the spicy tuna, and the fish was very fresh and delicious, but besides the flavor of the fish, there was nothing special about the roll. Particularly for 10 dollars. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not the best sushi I ever have. There were two people working here, the sushi chef, and a lady who played the roll of host, waitress, cashier, and even dish-washer. She was very sweet and attentive. I would go back, but not seek it out as a place I'm dying to go to.
(3)Tom G.
Still excellent. Just went tonight and have been a few times every year since I wrote the first review. Excellent food and comfortable ambience. Prices - I'd say well worth it.
(5)Elle G.
Good sushi by any standards. Prices are a bit high, but hey, it's Maui. And if it's good, I don't mind that. Service is awful. Slow, unfriendly... Unless they like you for some particular reason, be prepared to be ignored. I've been there several times with different groups and it's always been the same. Not planning on going back by choice.
(2)Greg L.
I'm sorry this just hit the spot for lunch today. Delicious rolls!!
(5)Robert R.
Center of town a good place to chill out.
(3)Mar R.
bad service/rude woman. she slammed the ice cream case while impatiently waiting for us to choose a flavor, slopped one scoop into the cup, and stormed away. unfortunately, we tipped her before receiving her service. the ice cream was a bit stale. the veggie roll was mediocre. the shrimp nigiri, for $4-something, was one limp piece of shrimp collapsed onto a small ball of rice.
(1)Shannon S.
we walked in and was not greeted. handed menus and just walked away. sushi came out, had to ask for plates, sushi was okay, spider roll tasted funny so we pushed it on the side and waited for her to check on us which she never did! after waiting about 10 mins, we finally walked up and asked her for the check!. we had to get her attention again to inform her about the spider roll, she took such offense to it and said " why tell me after, why no tell me earlier before you ready for go" we told her we would of but she never came back to the table!! instead of apologizing she keep on being rude! even the way she handed the bill for us to sign!! NEVER have I had such and aweful experience like that! I NEVER WILL GO BACK!! all because my favorite sushi restaurant (KOJIMA'S)was closed!:(
(1)Maui R.
Always the freshest sushi! Love it, almost didn't want to write a review so it doesn't get to crowded, but what the hey...
(4)Darika S.
The best sushi hands down. At dinner they pretty much only do sushi so we had to stop for a burger for my hubby afterward, he doesn't do seafood. I ordered the nine piece chef pick. He made me 2 salmon, 2 eel, 2 shrimp, 2 tuna and 2 (I want to say halibut) so ended up with 10 pieces all together. Green tea was good and edamame was okay. Expect $20 per person for fantastic sushi. I will dream about this place.
(5)Zulema V.
I was in the mood for sushi without having to drive out of the way, this is the spot if you are staying country:) the family own/run restaurant is nice and clean. We were greeted and served quickly. The sushi was great! I would defiantly come back again and recommend it to friends.
(5)Nicole S.
Once you get over the fact that sushi in Hawaii is expensive, you'll realize paying $3-$4.50 for a piece of nigiri is just how it is. This place doesn't look like it would be good let alone great but it was the best sushi spot we had on Maui. It was soo good that we went twice over our wk visit in Maui. My tip - stick with nigiri, the pieces are huge. Our favorite was the toro and ahi tuna which just melted in our mouths. The place is run by a family and the sushi is only done by the father. Definitely check it out!
(5)Curt W.
Great small family run place. This was our second time here and we'll be back every time we come to Maui. No frills just amazing food. Rainbow roll has to be my favorite. We sat at the bar and the owners were super friendly and fun to talk to. The fish is as good as it gets. If you're looking for a great meal I definitely recommend Makawao Sushi & Deli.
(5)Marygrace D.
My fiancé and I stumbled upon this great place last month. We live in the south side of the island and never really make it up to this side and was very pleased to have found this little gem. I was attracted to the sign "makawao sushi and deli." Since I'm such a sushi fanatic. I figured it would be a great place to eat for lunch since they served sushi and sandwiches. First impression of the restaurant was not that great. It is definitely a "mom and pops" restaurant. You knew right away that they served sushi but there was not any signs of serving sandwiches. My fiancé and I was a bit confused so we just went ahead and ordered a couple rolls. First thing I noticed was how extremely pricey the sushi rolls were ($10-$18). I ordered a hamachi roll, California roll, and a salmon skin roll... Surprisingly, after tasting a couple rolls I didn't think so much about the price of the rolls because the fish was very fresh. Probably one of the best freshest sushi I've had in quite some time. Halfway into me completing my meal, we finally asked if they had other things in the menu other then sushi, and in fact they did. They did serve sandwiches, it was in a separate printed menu. My fiancé ordered the macadamia nut chicken sandwich. Which was pretty delicious and have never had a sandwich like that before. Overall experience is two thumbs up and definitely would recommend this place and I look forward to going back ;)
(5)Lara O.
Delicious, fresh, casual, and expensive. I think you're paying for the freshness of the fish, which I get, but $20/roll is the most expensive I've experienced. It's definitely a deli - so don't come expecting it to be a sushi bar or restaurant. A friend recommended this place to us, and without that, I'm not sure I would have forked out the dough. Fiance and I got miso soups, and shared a rainbow roll. We were NOT disappointed. Very authentic, very fresh, and A LOT of bang for your buck, even if it's $20. I'd recommend coming here for an afternoon snack and sharing a roll with someone.
(4)Eric Y.
The sushi was tasty and fresh, but the $20 price tag on the rolls and $5 per hamachi nigiri were not quite justified. That's probably why we were the only ones in the restaurant. Service was not really friendly but not rude either.
(3)Justin E.
Literally the worst place to eat on the island. We were the only people in there and the "waitress" was very unfriendly from the get go. She didn't say hi, smile, or acknowledge that we were there. She walked over, threw the menus on the table, and walked away. The prices for the sushi were expensive and the "waitress" didn't offer us anything to drink. We walked out before the "waitress" returned to pick up our order slip. This place isn't worth your time. If I could I would give this zero stars.
(1)Vinh T.
Hands down best sushi in Maui. Restaurant also serves ice cream and coffee in an old could town, kind of weird, but cool. I guess there is not many stores in that part of town. Back to the sushi and sashimi. The tuna is some of the freshest and best tasting I have ever had, it is serious business. Rainbow roll was really good too, If you like good tuna, in Maui there is only Makawao in my opinion.
(5)vic f.
These guys put out some seriously fresh fish, presented in true Japanese style. Don't let the environs fool you, I really had my doubts but as soon as the sashimi combo came out, I knew these two weren't fooling around. Its appears to be a mom and pop shop, with her running front of house with grace, and him back of the sushi bar. The 9 piece combo was plenty for one and one of the special rolls in the back is also plenty. The fish was FRESH, not a hint of fishiness just the true flavor of the species. The slabs covering the rolls were also plentiful. I love the "hole in the wall" surprises.
(5)Caren W.
This place was casually cool, BYOB, delicious! Brother and sister team gave great service and wonderful rolls. The fish slices on top of the rolls were so big and fresh! We had a "cooked" roll that was so good and made differently from any we have had before. This place was recommended to us by Jen and she was right! One of our favorites upcountry! YUMMY!!
(4)Tanya C.
I am here to say, this was the best sushi I have ever had! We went to a few places in the lower ares near the beach, Sansei, Raku, etc... and once we headed to the "up country" and found Makawao, it was Mmmm Wow!!! We were the only customers there at the time and it was just the owner's wife working, but she was awesome. She made us feel comfortable and welcome and took really good care of us while we waited for her husband, the chef, to come back from a store run. She made us a few rolls, as she wasn't allowed to cut the sashimi. Her husband returned and he proceeded to fulfill the rest of our order including the sashimi and all I can say is, it was worth the wait for him to return. Highly recommend Makawao over any other place in Maui! Its a beautiful drive, beautiful scenery, and an amazing little town that makes you forget city life, and enjoy the beauty of what Maui has to offer. Just do it!!!
(5)Pamela F.
We loved the sushi here. We had a couple of rolls and the fish was very fresh and the rolls were beautifully prepared. Came down off the mountain and headed right in to Makawao. Got to know the owners a bit. Very nice people. He does the sushi and she does everything else. They have several flavors of great ice cream here too. It is a deli; they make sandwiches, but the sushi is a great reason to go here.

so fresh..so good. the rolls are awesome. the sushi rice is authentic.
(4)Diane W.
Sushi was great. We found this place by accident and were surprised to find "Harry" making the sushi. We knew it was going to be wonderful! Fish was very fresh and rolls large. Miso soup had a nice taste. Nice find in Makawao!
(5)Monique H.
This sushi bar is a jewel in my paradise; I'm almost afraid to share the secret because I know this precious place will be overwhelmed. The sushi is extremely fresh, perfectly prepared and prices are reasonable. At this time, customers may bring in wine, sake, or beer; appropriate drinking vessels are provided. Ben and Harry are among the best sushi chefs on the island! It's also a great spot for espresso and breakfast in the morning, a mid-morning luscious pastry, or a laid back lunch. Find Makawao Sushi and Deli on Baldwin Avenue in the heart of Makawao. Aloha from a long time resident of Makawao!

(5)Justin E.
(1)Eric Y.
The sushi was tasty and fresh, but the $20 price tag on the rolls and $5 per hamachi nigiri were not quite justified. That's probably why we were the only ones in the restaurant. Service was not really friendly but not rude either.
(3)Margaret P.
(5)Paige S.
(4)Carol L.
(4)Elizabeth D.
(2)Mikael G.
(5)Vinh T.
(5)Andrew G.
YUMMY!!
(4)George T.
Stopped in for an ice coffee and nigiri hamachi. Both were very good and hit the spot!
(4)Hannah A.
(3)Tanya C.
(1)SunShine L.
The sushimi may be ok but I was very dissapointed with our rolls. Six piece rolls with small amounts of fish. Strange ambiance, hard to get refills on water. Stick with coffee and pastry's. Not recommended.
(2)Conrad B.
Very good! Generous portions of fish with the sushi! Would and did go back. Owners also make one feel welcome. Good coffee and ice cream also.
(4)Ryan T.
(5)Mar R.
bad service/rude woman. she slammed the ice cream case while impatiently waiting for us to choose a flavor, slopped one scoop into the cup, and stormed away. unfortunately, we tipped her before receiving her service. the ice cream was a bit stale. the veggie roll was mediocre. the shrimp nigiri, for $4-something, was one limp piece of shrimp collapsed onto a small ball of rice.
(5)Jenny F.
Sushi heaven. The quality of the sushi and the skill in which it is prepared is the best sushi I've ever had. The Philadelphia roll is amazing, by the way....it all is. Please treat yourself to this when you are in Maui; you won't be sorry.
(5)Kelly B.
(4)Moko S.
so fresh..so good. the rolls are awesome. the sushi rice is authentic.
(4)Diane W.
Sushi was great. We found this place by accident and were surprised to find "Harry" making the sushi. We knew it was going to be wonderful! Fish was very fresh and rolls large. Miso soup had a nice taste. Nice find in Makawao!

(1)Margaret P.
(5)Greg L.
I'm sorry this just hit the spot for lunch today. Delicious rolls!!
(5)Robert R.
Center of town a good place to chill out.
(3)Curt W.
(5)Paige S.
(4)Carol L.
(4)Elizabeth D.
(5)Mikael G.
(5)Vinh T.
YUMMY!!
(4)George T.
Stopped in for an ice coffee and nigiri hamachi. Both were very good and hit the spot!
(4)Hannah A.
(2)Tanya C.
(1)audrey i.
(5)Conrad B.
(2)Ryan T.
(5)Mar R.
bad service/rude woman. she slammed the ice cream case while impatiently waiting for us to choose a flavor, slopped one scoop into the cup, and stormed away. unfortunately, we tipped her before receiving her service. the ice cream was a bit stale. the veggie roll was mediocre. the shrimp nigiri, for $4-something, was one limp piece of shrimp collapsed onto a small ball of rice.
(5)gary k.
(5)Moko S.
so fresh..so good. the rolls are awesome. the sushi rice is authentic.
(4)Y R.
(5)Kelly B.
