First of all, I do have to say this. Kauia is small town country. Don't expect the fancy restaurants you may be used to. Things are slower paced so go with the flow. That said, after chowing down at overpriced breakfast diners all week, Dani's came as a welcome relief highly recommended by a local. We're so glad we checked out this venue rather than write off that there were no fair priced eateries. (yes, I know food has to be transported from Oahu and the mainland adding to the cost) We're happy and so were our wallets. We ate here twice during our week stay. The pancakes my son had were good, and the portuguese sausage was delicious as well. If you're on the islands and want to experience good food at reasonable prices, Dani's is the place. Don't be too intimidated by the vast majority of locals that frequent and fill this place. Remember, when in Kauai, do as the Kauaians do! Please note that the beef stew is not the Dinty Moore thick kine, it's soupy and designed to be eaten with the usual staple rice. Please note that white rice is served in lieu of bread. Therefore, toast is extra at most places and not a given. You will have to request it. For the true Kauai experience, I highly recommend the breakfasts. Next time, I'll try the lunches and the tripe stew which I heard is absolutely delish!

Old school diner, had the fench toast and papaya pancakes- nothing special. A lot of locals eating there. Very good value.

Papaya pancakes were decent, but the rest of the food was pretty standard. I poured my coffee, sugar, and cream first, but luckily before drinking it, it occurred to me that the cream might have been sitting out for a while... I smelled the cream and it smelled like it was spoiling. My husband said the restaurant looks like a cafeteria. I would not go back.

Went for breakfast during the middle of the week, on a tip from a local driver. The place was about 1/4 full, mostly with locals, but with some tourists sprinkled in as well. The prices are cheap, and the menu is not very long, but has enough on it. I had the steakburger breakfast, per some other yelpers, and it was prepared well and was tasty. My wife had the pancakes, which were good as well. The service was slow, even for Kauai standards, and considering it was not that busy. The bathrooms, however, were a total mess, and that was disappointing to say the least. It's a local place, but there has to be better.

Great locals place for Hawaiian food. Open at 5am til 2pm. Lots of breakfast and lunch choices with a few specials and everything apparently comes with coffee. The other day we tried their fried Ono, which was delicious for $7....difficult to get fish at such a good price on the island....Also have had the beef stew, Kalua Pig, all tasty and nice portions....Cafeteria style seating....your order comes out on a three tier tray...great service, low key, great value.

This place was recommended by the local co-worker of some friends we were visiting. It had tons of local flavor, but definitely not geared towards tourists. I ordered the Kalua omelet which was not much more than egg and pig, and my companion had the fishcake omelet, similar situation. both could have used some salt and pepper. Squarish McDonald's style hash browns came with. A pot of coffee arrived shortly after we sat down, and the creamer on the table had an odd caramel color to it instead of the whiteness i usually associate with cream. Next time, I might just go with the pancakes or waffle.

My husband and I ate at Dani's because it was recommended by Frommer's as a good local spot for breakfast. We arrived a little too late for breakfast, and we had to order some of their Plate Lunch specials instead. We were excited because there were a lot of locals dining there, and we thought we'd get some delicious local cuisine. But as soon as our food came out, we were utterly disappointed. My plate lunch of Kalua pork, eggs, rice, and macaroni salad was OK. However, my husband's fried chicken and teri beef dish was downright terrible. The ingredients in his dish did not taste fresh at all. It was such a disappointment after all the good reviews we read. Maybe breakfast is better here, but after the terrible lunch we had, somehow I highly doubt it. If you want a taste of local food, then definitely go to Hamura Saimin Stand instead.

Had the BCLM Bacon Cheeseburger Loco Moco and Mango Hot cakes. Seat yourself kinda place but the service was great. Nothing beats the hospitality of little old ladies. They immediately brought me a fresh pot of coffee which is perfect as I'm not human until I've had coffee. And then took my order. Food is good for a diner and will hold me over for the entire day, really. Large portions.

  • R T.

BCLM...my ultimate fave!!! (Bacon cheeseburger loco moco). Love the special, Kauai made sauce/marinade/dressing they use (and sell)! Garlic is my favorite!

  • Michelle A.

Yummmm!!! I had the bacon cheeseburger loco moco-- only because so many people recommended it here in yelp. I have to say it is one of the best loco mocos I've had in a long time. The service is quick, the food comes out quick, and the portion sizes are good. The prices are reasonable. I just wish they were open for dinner.

I walked in an was directed to sit at a table that was still filled with dirty dishes from the previous diner. We waited almost 10 minutes for the table to be cleared and another 5 minutes without having our order taken or drinks brought around. We walked.

  • Karen D.

Good solid food for the most part. Friendly people and quick service. Coffee was mediocre, hash Browns not crispy and all juice was from concentrate. On the other hand, the mango hot cakes were great with chunks of fresh mango (from their tree in the back) . Eggs were cooked just right. Portugese sausage was mild but still tasty. All in all, a good meal before our hike.

Back in the islands again! This time in Kauai, our favorite island. Found thru search and reviews Dani's restaurant. Definitely a Locals place! Large portions and prices very reasonable. Coffee included and it is great. Given the time you will wait after ordering (understandable as it was packed on this Memorial Day morning) you will be happy for the great coffee, The wait is not a ding on this business-- it ain't fast food you come for. The blueberry pancakes, BCLM, guava juice & coffee -- a return visit is required.

Dani's Restaurant is a casual, no frills diner. Their Menu features meat and eggs like steak, vienna sausage, portuguese sausage, or kalua pig; omlettes like seafood or ham and cheese; and pancakes, waffles and french toast. Their Loco Moco was unremarkable. The hamburger was dry and the gravy could have been any brown gravy mix. The Two Eggs with Sausage and Rice was fine, a basic breakfast. Come to Dani's for a hearty, cheap breakfast that will fill you up and get you on your way. It's a good place to stop for a quick, sit down breakfast on your way to work.

Hubby and I wanted to try a Hawaiian breakfast during our stay in Kauai. We walked in and the place was pretty full of both locals and tourists alike. It's a no frills place. A nice old lady took our orders and brought them out via cart. I dared to try not only the loco moco, but the bacon cheese loco moco, which had not only the hamburger, rice, egg, and gravy, but cheese, bacon, and chives. In hindsight, it was too much, but in the heat of the moment, it tasted delicious. It was a layered texture of flavors from the sticky rice at the bottom, chewy hamburger, gooey cheese, creamy gravy, crunchy bacon, and fresh chives. Hubby stopped me from devouring the entire thing, especially since we were going snorkeling later on - for fear of me sinking to the bottom of the ocean. He tried the lau lau with a side of beef and tripe soup which were both okay.

  • toni a.

My egg white omlet was average, in fact a little small for the price. Only veggie options are tomatoes, mushroom (canned), onions. No brown rice. Not a restaurant for the health conscious.

  • El B.

Definitely a local place, very quiet and not too busy. The Lau Lau, Kahlua Pig and Poi plate was good, and we were served our food quickly. Very reminiscent of a local "greasy spoon" restaurant in the L.A. area, just on the island! Don't expect anything fancy or an over abundance of service, just go here to get get decent food at a reasonable price.

  • Hector M.

Simple, no great decor but if you are looking for cheap breakfast it was great. Believe it or not, I liked my eggs and spam. The Papaya was great and enjoyed the guava juice. My wife enjoyed her pork and eggs and all for $30.

  • Brett H.

A good local place for breakfast or simple foods and local favorites. I liked the loco moco and the Kulua pork omelette. Nice to find a good local place free of tourists.

  • Chee K.

I was intrigued because we kept passing this place on our way to various beaches and saw all the reviews. I think this is a hawaiian version of a greasy spoon. The food is decent, nothing too spectacular but solid. I had the loco moco, of course! Their gravy was tasty and I didn't have any complaints about my dish. It was pretty good actually. My husband had their kaluha pork omelette. It would have been nice to have a veggie or option in his omelette, but it is what it is. The size of their dishes are not huge but I kind of like that. It's also reflected in their price, not too much! Their coffee is terrible, pretty much like a diner's. I didn't know it was free but even so I think I'd pass. They had lots of tables and looks like a local favorite. If I lived here, I'd prob come and find my favorite dish. They have plenty of wait staff who push your food on little carts. I like it for what it is.

Looking for a place for Breakfast in Lihue, this is it. Very nice staff and great food. I had the steak and eggs with Hashbrowns. All were cooked just the way I like it. They have a great section of food for those that like local Hawaiian food food and tourist. Highly recommend the only reason for the 4 stars instead of five is the place is a dated.

  • Addison B.

Two things you've got to try: Bacon Cheese Loco Moco or the trip stew! I know these things sound heavy and guess what, it is! Perfect for the end of the day or if you don't got a lot to do in the day and planning on working out, breakfast for sure. They are super yummy! And on your way out pick up their dressing that they make. Perfect for salads and even marinades.

Fake Laulau!!! Not acceptable. I came home to Hawaii to eat real island food, and although I love spinach, it is not what I ordered when I ordered Laulau!! TARO LEAVES!! Not spinach! I can make that on the mainland. And I have to say, I can make it way better than Dani's. With all due respect to the old-timers, I wonder what's going to happen to this place when they are all gone. It's just a matter of fact. "We've been serving it like that for 23 years," the server responds to my statement that THIS IS NOT LAU LAU. Yeah, whatever you've been doing for 23 years is irrelevant to someone who has never been to your establishment except for once - just about 23 years ago! Laulau is taro, unless otherwise specified. No where in the menu does is specify use of spinach instead of taro. What you have here is a case of FALSE ADVERTISING! Which, by the way, is ILLEGAL!! When the waitress walked away to check with her boss, I'd planned to order something else; my scoop of spinach smashed up against dry pork was NOT what I came in for. But then she took forever to come back, talked story with the table in front of me and almost seemed like she was ignoring me. If I wasn't so hungry, I would have walked out. Her boss could care less, I guess, because there was no appearance to apologize for the misleading menu. I wasn't looking for that, just looking to order something else. If you don't care about the laulau, and you still decide to go there, few things: (1) the place is clean, I will give it that. I was actually excited to find a new spot in Lihue. In the end, all I found was another spot to avoid; (2) Don't expect a greeting committee - no Hi, Hello, Welcome, E Komo mai - just droopy faces behind the counter - OHHH there's the sign on the wall to the side that says seat yourself. OK, that's fine. The guy giving me my utensils had the smileyest face, and the waitress was nice, too, just not proactive about saving a customer; and finally, (3) CHECK YOUR BILL. Evidently, there is a new menu with LOWER PRICES than the server remembers. (How convenient!) Nope to Dani's. It just hit me, it felt like cafeteria food from elementary school; not like Wilcox Hospital cafeteria, which is one of my approved spots. And imagine, they could have saved me with a simple, "would you like to order something else?" or at least making eye contact with me when I was trying to get their attention. Nope, lost customer. Paid this time, won't be paying again.(NEXT?!)

4 stars for good food, good prices, and good service. Minus one star for setting and ambulance as its a very casual local diner. Got the loco moco with bacon and it was really good. Eat where the locals eat brah, way better than fancy dancy resort dining and you won't even need a second mortgage to eat here.

    (4)
  • Boron F.

4 stars for the food. Service and the actual restaurant would get a much lower review. Our waitress either had something much better to do or couldn't care less about actually providing the service she was there to provide. The furniture is old and there is no carpet or noise absorption so the seating area (one large open room) is pretty loud. The menu is pretty limited and then is a bit confusing. Many items are only available at certain times while the remainder of that menu page will be available all day. The only way to get clarification is to ask the unfriendly waitress! AARG! However, the food is good. The loco move was shared by everyone at the table and it was amazing. There was something incredible about the gravy. Additionally, the kalua pig and eggs was great too!

I was working on Kauai today, and I must say..............it was a good day! How is it a good day for me today????? A good day for me is when I can stop, sit down & eat, which is a luxury for me when you're running around like a madman. As I'm on the road making my rounds, I've often past by Dani's Restaurant, but never had the opportunity to try it until today............ I walk in, sat myself down.........soon enough a girl walks by & drops off a water, but no greeting. The restaurant is medium size...........maybe about 20 tables? Place was about 2/3's full..........not bad. The decor of the restaurant kinda reminds me of a Like Like Drive Inn.........nothing fancy at all. Totally a "casual local kine" place. I pull up a menu from the table...........did a quick scan, and decided on the Hamburger Steak (Loco Moco) . Upon ordering my Hamburger Steak with brown rice, & eggs "over-easy", the wait was kinda long........but that was okay by me as I wasn't in a rush at this point. Just savoring the time at a new restaurant......... Upon receiving my meal, I noticed the hamburger patty was oval shaped and on the thin side, and the light brown gravy that topped the hamburger patty was kinda bland tasting. Eggs over-easy was done perfectly. I think I must have picked the wrong item as my meal was just "bleh" for me. I wasn't anything to call home about, if you know what I mean............ On the bright side, the meal was very cheap, and they also offered complimentary Kona coffee. They do it IHOP style - where they leave a jug of coffee on your table, you can serve it yourself & drink as much as you like............no charge, FREE! When I went to pay at the counter, they elderly lady made me wait as I don't know what she was doing.......I had to address her 1st, before she addressed me. Paid my meal, & left my waitress a 15% tip. I'll probably be back one day.............but not too soon.

I was going to give this place a 3, but after entering the disgusting bathroom I give it a 2. The food is mediocre and so is the service. No one was very friendly or welcoming.

Had the sweet bread french toast yummy. Hubby had eggs and sausage cooked perfect. Affordable. Go early gets busy. Seat yourself. They leave the whole coffee pot on your table. This is a must to go to. All the locals go here.

We stopped in here after reading about it in a travel guide and seeing it on Yelp and other sites. Had the BCLM: Bacon Cheese Loco Moco and had my husband wishing he ordered the same(he got spam and eggs). We will be going there again! Very, very casual. We went at about 8AM and were seated right away. No frills, greasy spoon-type diner with local favorites as well as breakfast standard dishes. Good, cheap food compared to the bloated prices of the Marriott's breakfast options. Servers roll around the diner with carts and aren't very talkative but friendly enough. Try something different when you come, like Loco Moco! Restaurant is easy to miss.

Good portugese sausage! It was the only restaurant we could find in lihue that was open for breakfast! Prices were reasonable and coffee was included!

My wife & I stopped for breakfast on Saturday 17 May en route to the airport. We are always looking for local eateries on Kauai and did some scouting along Rice street before heading to the airport. We arrived a bit before 10:30 which was lucky for us as Dani's closes at 11:00 on Saturdays. My wife ordered the waffle with a side of ham and I ordered the sweet bread French toast with a side of Portuguese sausage. We did not notice the special board until after we ordered - live and learn. My wife liked her waffle and her side of ham was quite large - as she shared some with me. It was not a canned ham, so the flavor was good. My sweet bread French toast was a bit of a disappointment as the bread did not taste sweet (or special) to me. My side of Portuguese sausage was quite tasty - but only four silver dollar size and thickness slices - but hey for $3 you cannot expect a half pound. One oddity I noted is there is no jam or jelly on the table. I typically prefer to use jam or jelly rather than syrup - perhaps had I asked for said same. The syrup served was nothing special - likely from a five gallon pail sold by Sysco. The price was quite low for Kauai - with our sides it was about $8 per person and coffee is included at no extra charge. As this was my first visit, I ordered conservatively while watching what was served to those around us. The mostly (all?) local crowd weighed In heavily for the bowl dishes - I assume the beef & trip stews. Next time I will take up this challenge and start with a small bowl to see if I like this local specialty. Summary , Dani's is supported by locals, has low prices and with some tradition items but mostly local specialties - most certainly worth a visit.

Dined Sat. June 22, 2013 10:00 am, party of 2 Wife and I had breakfast here. Nothing fancy or special. Just simple local fare that the local residents flock too. Service is efficient and fast. So, if your in hurry, this is place to come too.

Totally a local breakfast hangout. If you don't expect anything fancy, but want a good sized breakfast/brunch/lunch with a Hawaiian influence, then this is your place! Came here after reading about the pineapple and papaya pancakes and sweetbread French toast in Frommers. I thought the meal was great value! Complimentary Kona coffee or tea with most meal items. I LOVED my pineapple pancakes! Pieces are mixed into the batter which is nice and light. I sm so going to try to make this at home! The fresh papaya was a great side and so was the Portuguese sausage. Hubby had the sweetbread French toast which was nice and thickly cut. Okay but prompt service. Very basic tables and decor, no ambience. Great value and I would definitely come back again to try the papaya pancakes!

When in Rome, do like the Romans do! When in Kauai, do breakfast like the locals! I dig this place! It's local bill of fare that reflects reasonable, local prices. The portions are not all that on some dishes (I had to order a second omelet to split before I was satisfied) but who cares? Why? Because it is so hard to find a place that isn't affiliated with tourism and tourist that serves simple, honest food in that area. I loved eating with the locals...and I'll be back for sure!

  • Kimberly M.

We were in Kauai last year and decided to go to Dani's for breakfast on our last day, before heading to the airport. Hands down this was the best breakfast that we had on the island. Sure, it looks like an office and it's kind of in a random spot but it's good. No frills, no ambience just great food. Service is prompt (but don't expect too much) and prices are cheap (for Hawaii) you should make sure you get to visit for breakfast at least once.

    (5)
  • Vicky T.

cheap eats!! A large pot of coffee at our table.. YES! After seeing disappointing reviews for other places near our hotel, we finally settled on this place. We ended up going twice again for breakfast during our stay. Hubby and I got one of the breakfasts with eggs, toast and Portuguese sausage.. nomz! Seat yourself! warning- parking can get a little crazy so be patient!

Comfort food... Mmm.... Local place and local feel too. Tends to get busy but tables open up fast. Worth the wait if you don't want to pay tons of $ for good food.

I grew up on Kauai and just went to Dani's yesterday for the first time in about 15 years. Went in for breakfast and it was really unimpressive. The waitress was pretty surly (whatever, people have bad days). The busser was pretty surly too (lots of bad days I guess). Even though there were only about 5 tables full, the service was still really slow. It wasn't like hours slow, but slow enough where you start to wonder, especially when you're just ordering eggs and rice and hamburger steak kinds of plates. I also really wasn't impressed with the size of the plates. The cost wasn't out of hand (about 8 bucks each), but the food came out and I was surprised at how small it was. I guess I'm just used to ordering local style breakfasts and having a heaping mound of food put down. It's usually impossible for a small guy to be hungry after a loco moco but Dani's can make it happen. It really wasn't a terrible experience but I had bad service, slow food, and small dishes. No real reason to ever go back for me. I think you're better off somewhere like tip-top down the street (I actually swung by tip-top beforehand but it was packed and I didn't feel like waiting around for a parking spot). Grindz cafe in Eleele is another solid choice if you're looking for local style breakfasts. I know I haven't been to Dani's in years, but from what I remember, the lunches were really good. Good Hawaiian food (lau lau and kalua pig etc.). I probably wont ever be back there to double check but I want you to know that this review is only for my experience at breakfast, if you get Hawaiian food it might be killer.

it's the same kind of basic, neighborhood diner you could stop by anywhere, get a taste of the local favorites. noodles are good, rice is good, chicken is good - on the negative side, portions are a little underwhelming, service can be a little laggy, and the food is pretty standard, nothing real special. But it's the kind of place that you can easily stop by during lunch break or on the way back from work, just for a quick bite to eat.

Went for breakfast, but it was after 11 am. We were getting up and leave because the other food wasn't what we like. The waitress stopped us and asked if we wanted breakfast. We stayed. we had ham & cheese omelets, they were just ok. Imitation cheese and real small. The good part was it was cheap.

Had combination plate. Fried chicken and teriyaki beef. Chicken pieces were over fried and therefore dry. Beef was too salty. Won't be coming here again.

You guys... i would go into a full fledge riot if this place ever shut down. We live on Oahu but everytime we visit Kauai we NEED to stop off at Dani's. Maybe it pulls on my heartstrings bc the same ladys that served me when i was like 8years old, are still there now, and im 26. its been a long time. No frills, super laid back.. so laid back im surprised that they had a credit card machine this last time that i went. Service is a hit or miss and the food isnt orgasmic or anyting, but it does make you crave it. If youre from Oahu its like a mix between Hungry Lion (miss that place.. and Wailana/liliha bakery). I hope theyre around for years to come bc thats one of the things i look foward to visiting.

This was our first stop when we got on the island mostly because it was the only place we were told that was open. So my first meal was Portuguese sausage with eggs and rice. Delicious. Love the house coffee and all the choices on the menu, but nothing says "Good Morning" like a hearty meal. The staff was very friendly and nice (for 7 AM and I was barely even awake) and the food was great.

    (4)
  • Jackie P.

No frills breakfast. Good price. Would be better if ingredients were fresh and not canned- with so much lush land here you'd think this would be standard! Nothing extraordinary but cheap.

Fabulous local food at such reasonable prices...in fact they have a great habanero sauce called Raging Volcano hot sauce...owner will even sell bottles of this great sauce...unlikely will find at any local stores, we scoured the island but no luck. Do not expect resort style food and certainly not resort prices, this is a great gem! Must eat location while traveling the island!

  • Linda C.

We always eat at Dani's for breakfast when Tip Top is closed. The Beef Stew is absolutely the best on the island. Ymmmmmm. Dani's is the only restaurant that makes french toast that I like. I am fussy about pancakes and french toast. The first time I saw my order of french toast, I though "oh, dear-- this will be average" but I was so wrong. It is delicious and it is cooked perfectly-- evenly all the way through. This is surprisingly rare. (Side note: Many short-order restaurants cook french toast and pancakes on a grill that is too hot so they can crank the food out faster. When you do that the outside appears done, but the inside is undercooked. yech. I told you I was picky. ) Pot of coffee on table is wonderful-- so convenient. Part of travel is experiencing the local culture, not eating in phony resorts. I always enjoy seeing how all the locals know each other and talk story over breakfast. Don't park in the parking lot. It's too hard to get in and out --even if you can find a spot. Park on the street. They deserve every one of these four stars for the beef stew and the french toast.

If ever there was a restaurant that was the distant cousin of Zippy's, it would probably be Dani's. The food is good, but nothing incredibly special. There are two great things about this restaurant: 1. It's cheap! If there's one thing I love most, it's cheap eats. The less I have to spend on a meal, the better! 2. You get a whole pot of coffee at your table...& anyone who knows me, knows that I love my coffee (& tea)!! 31 Yelps Review Challenge: #2/31

Look, Dani's isn't fancy - but it is ONO Hawai'i. This is the home of the plate breakfast and lunch. Simple and tasty. Prices are great by Kaua'i standards, service is nice. I stress...it ain't fancy! But if you want a great breakfast for a great price, stop in.

  • Faby M.

Best coffee in Kauai! ... maybe it was the creamer, but creamer goes in my coffee, so.. best coffee! My husband got an omelet and i got their french toast. Not expectacular. Not bad. But i'll go back over and over again for their coffee alone. Another plus, the coffee is included in most breakfast choices so that saves you $3 per person right there. A bill for two came out to $15.50... not bad!

This was our first meal in Hawaii for our honeymoon. I liked the local fare, though the prices were kind of steep for what you got. The portions are pretty small and not made up very nicely. Very homestyle in appearance and portions.

  • John H.

Went there for breakfast. My first impression was that the restaurant looks dirty. The bathrooms were really dirty too. They served us water that tasted like fish tank water. I got banana pancakes, hash browns and bacon. The bacon was very greasy. Pancakes were decent but they didnt have coconut syrup, which was a disappointment. The food was just ok and the service was lacking. We went to the feral Pig the morning prior and had an awesome breakfast. They have banana bread french Toast and coconut syrup. The quality of food is much better there. I'd recommend that you go there instead!

I've ate here several times over the years and must say that what you order does make a difference on whether you'll like this place or not. In the past I've had almost everything on the list and the food over all to me is average. The prices aren't too bad but there are other places where you can get better quality food at a better price. Today (11/16012) I decided to try the "Hamburger Steak" which is more close to what locals refer to as "Loco Moco" in a non-traditional way using traditional items. I had 2 scoops of rice, a thin oval shaped hamburger patty, 2 eggs fried to my choice with brown gravy on my patty. Nothing special about this particular dish that caught my attention. The gravy seemed to be non-home made from out of the package powdered variety. The burger had no flavor to it and the rice was extra sticky and watery. It is priced at $7.50 and my total with 3 slices of bacon and a Costco hot green tea came out to $10 and change. I should have gone for the stew and rice which I know is half decent although not the greatest that I've tasted here on my island (Kauai) but I wanted to do a separate review of the various Loco Moco's that this island has to offer on my personal review site. Overall...The parking is limited, the service is decent and not a bad place to eat but the Loco Moco I would suggest to stay away from. Between here and Tip Top down the road I would definitely choose Tip Top. It's a little pricier but you get what you pay for.

We wanted to squeeze in one more different breakfast joint while we were in Kaua'i, so we tried Dani's. It's filled with mostly locals and that's just fine with us. I still brought my camera and notebook to scribble notes, looks be damned. Dani's has a cafeteria-like feel. You don't walk through a line to pick up food, but the tables and chairs are a throwback and the food is delivered on a cart. A carafe of kona coffee was brought to our table before our orders were taken. Breakfast is served until 11 am and then it's lunch. Food is definitely cheap here! I ordered the sweet bread french toast ($4.90) and an over easy egg on the side ($1.50). My friend ordered one of the daily specials - fried rice with Portugese sausage and an egg ($6.80). They mixed my order a bit, giving me two eggs instead. I was charged for both ($2.20), but they also charged me a dollar less for the french toast for some reason. The french toast was two thick slices that were simple, with no sugar dusted on top. The eggs here, more than at any of the other places we ate, tasted like they were made in someone's home. The fried rice was made with pork, green onions and fish cake. The sausage was cut into rounds. All of it was good. We chatted with our Filipina waitress, Betty, who was very nice.

What a cool local joint! The atmosphere was great and was truly a local spot. A nice lady joined in on our 4 top which was cool. The Kalua Pig omelet was awesome. If you are a big eater this might not be your place. It was a nice small breakfast perfect to feed you before some beach time. Definitely coming back.

Excellent breakfast! Reminds you of an old Midwest diner from the menu to the place settings and the personal pot of coffee that's left on the table. They have a bacon cheeseburger loco moco that doesn't exist on the menu. Ask for it!

Dani's was recommended to us by a friend who grew up on Kauai. The Location: Great! Opens early, near the airport, lots of parking and easy to find. The tables are pretty big for just 2 people, so bring along your tourist booklets and local newspaper to spread out and plan your day. The Food: 1. The rice, egg, and portugese sausage plate was just ok. It's not as big as I expected from a local diner place. But the meals come with Kona coffee (otherwise $1.70.) 2. Lau lau plate was just ok too. We've had better. The lomi lomi salmon was on the salty side too. 3. Kona coffee- the house Kona coffee is one of the SMOOTHEST coffees I've ever had. No need cream, just add a touch of sugar. (Being the Starbucks Queen I've had a lot of coffee in my day). Probably the only other coffee that tops Dani's is a canal-side cappucino I had in Venice. My final thought: If you catch an early flight to Kauai and have some time to kill, it's not a bad place to stop by for a quick breakfast and satisfying cup of coffee.

The place was full of locals...good sign. Service was fast and fairly rude...also a good sign. Food was blah, coffee was weak (served with evap. milk which gave it a gritty texture), and environment was noisy. As much as I like hidden local gems, I'm still a tourist and would rather pay a few extra dollars for a nice breakfast on the beach.

This is one of the few places open early for breakfast in "town." There are a lot of locals who frequent there, as it is a great value. There is a distinct "neighbor island" feel to the place, from the other patrons to the "front of the house" staff. The place is best known for specials like tripe stew, however I would check to see what specials "Chef Danny" is putting together. They have a special salad dressing that is unique and tasty.

Great lau lau and rice for breakfast!!! The beef stew is good too. Way better (and cheaper) than eating breakfast at the hotel. Opens early.

We had lunch here on the recommendation of at least two guide books who raved about it as a local favorite. I got the loco moco, I forgot what my wife ordered, but we were both underwhelmed by the place. Not quite sure why it gets such rave reviews from the guide books. To us, it's like Zippy's with a less extensive menu.

We had lunch here as soon as we got off the plane. I ordered the kalua pig, and he got the veal. I'm not expert on hawaiian dishes, but it hit the spot after a long flight.

Among our party of 6, we ordered: lau lau and eggs, tripe stew, fried seafood platter, and the BBQ ribs special of the day, The tripe stew was tasty and the poi was cold so I was in heaven. I was told the lau lau was a bit skimpy with the leaves and the meat was bland but the seafood platter was fine and the special BBQ ribs was meaty and tasty. It was a good experience overall.

Very good specials, pretty good pricing. Not the best of the best, but a pretty fair price. The place needs a remodel - looks very dive-y cafeteria and not a diner. The food is pretty basic, ok loco moco (get the bowl), pretty good pancakes. --RibChamp

Had breakfast here one morning while visiting Lihue for work. Kinda hard to see at night except for the Open sign. I guess if you live there, everyone knows exactly where it is. Anyways, came here on suggestion of a coworker that was with me and so we went. Actually, I thought he said let's go to Denny's, so I said great! Grand Slam here I come! He tells me to turn in the parking lot and I see this plain building with no Denny's. I says this is Denny's. My co-worker in turn tells me no, not Denny's. Dani's! Ohhhhhh ok gotcha. I guess they don't have a Grand Slam breakfast either! Had good selection of breakfast with many choices of omelette's, local style breakfast, and even had tripe soup. I had the Kalua Pig Omelette and it was actually really good with plenty of meat. The portions are on the smaller side, but the prices are matched well at $6-$8. Really comfy place to eat and will have to keep coming back for breakfast runs. Lol...you know this is more of a local restaurant since everyone looked at me carrying a Starbucks coffee in my hand. The waitress pleasantly told me no outside drinks which was fine. Overall great place for cheap eats. Definitely recommend!

While looking for places to eat on Kauai this kept coming up. We were out of our hotel all night for the tsunami warning. Literally parked in a wal-mart parking lot. So when we heard dani's opened at 5am we were there. However the food was just ok. The service was fine. but overall the restaurant was not that comfortable. The menu is limited but a solid breakfast selections. Pancakes, waffles, omelets & eggs. They had local breakfast plates as well. The pineapple pancakes were really good, but I just wish there was something more. Like coconut syrup or something fun. The hot coco is a cup of hot water and a hot coco packet. Mix it your self. Not worth it. If you are stuck in a tsunami and want a bfast place then head here. Otherwise look for something better.

My husband and I spent a week in Kauai and ate at Dani's twice for breakfast. Our first morning there, we headed straight for Dani's. When we got there, there were a ton of locals that were dining there. it seemed like that was the place to eat! We ordered kalua pork omelet with papaya pancakes. Both were pretty good. Because the place was so packed, the service seemed a bit slow. However, once you seat yourself, they bring you your own carafe of coffee (included with the meal). The omelet was decent but the papaya pancake seemed to lack taste. However, that might be because papayas aren't that strong in taste to begin with. Regardless, we're glad we tried it. The second time we went there for breakfast, I ordered the eggs & portuguese sausage while my husband ordered the loco moco. Both entrees were quite tasty! This time the place was emptier and the service was pretty fast. We would recommend trying Dani's on your trip. It's worth trying and the folks there are really nice. The one regret we had was not having the chance to try the beef stew. It seemed like all the locals were ordering it and enjoying it!

Great breakfast food and cheap! Locals and touries occupy this place. The atmosphere is cafateria style with one big room and outdated tables. But the food is good and cheap can't go wrong.

This was our second and most likely our last visit to Dani's. Overall, the food was mediocre at best. Dani's was recommended to us as the place to go for local food on a previous trip to Kauai 4 years ago. I remember the parking lot was crowded and people were waiting, so I figure it must be good. Don't recall what we ate, but do remember we were not impressed with our breakfast/lunch. On this trip, we ended up at Dani's by default. Our first choice was the Tip Top Cafe for some banana mac pancakes. They have awesome oxtail soup and banana mac pancakes. Unfortunately, they were closed for renovations. My girlfriend and I ordered the kalua pork combo w/ lomi salmon. Although the pork was moist, it offered no flavor. Where was the salty, smokey flavor I have come to expect from kalua pork? Lomi salmon was decent, but a bit on the skimpy side. Hubby had lau lau, not much in flavor and mostly leaves. The best entree was probably the omelet my friend's husband ordered. He said it was good, but I noticed he liked just about everything he ordered on this trip. Overall, I would not recommend Dani's, there are so many other places to select from.

Good find, locals hangout, good loco moco, reminds me of driving through middle America except you are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

breakfast is "a-ok" here. it's usually pretty busy, especially earlier in the morning. this place has its usual suspects. price is pretty good, fairly cheap, but you pay for what you get. the portions aren't overly generous or anything. we probably stop in to this restaurant about once or twice a month when we're in lihue. the only gripe i have about this place is the waitress i alwaysssss get stuck with. she just has a holier-than-thou attitude, and it shows. i don't appreciate it at 7 in the morning with my eggs and portuguese sausage.

This long time establishment caters to the earlier risers and the many frequent fliers from Oahu. The first time i tried to go here i came right off the first flight form Honolulu and it was packed to the gills with the same people i was on the flight with, needless to say i passed on the opportunity because i needed to get on with my day and didn't have the time to sit down for breakfast. The second time around i had one of their specials of the day, corned beef hash and hash browns with an egg. Just enough to fill me up but not to go over board that i'd be sluggish the rest of the day. corned beef hash was the standard out of the can fair pan fried to be crispy on the outside and the hash browns were tasty, slathered the good ol' ketchup on all to round everything out.

This no frills local diner is fantastic for local food and a decent breakfast. It's obvious this is a local joint because all of the locals seem to know each other. Service is efficient, but not necessarily overly friendly. It's a huge open space with lots of tables. Servers roll carts down the aisles to deliver the orders (pretty efficient and smart if you ask me!) Each meal is served with complimentary kona coffee that they leave in a carafe on your table. We came here 3 times for breakfast and even got up early to have one last hawaiian breakfast before flying home. Each time we shared a loco moco (ask for extra gravy...it's delish!!) and pineapple pancakes that melt in your mouth. Super reasonable prices and an excellent find. Can't wait to go back for more!!!

If I could do less than 1 I would...If you are from the mainland do not go here period. Small portion and i mean small lucky if there is 2 eggs in the omlette and about 1/2 cup of hash browns...The "omlette" by the way was cheap gross deli meat ham with a kraft singles slice of cheese in the egg it was REALLY GROSS avoid this place its not worth it.

Had the laulau and eggs breakfast. Sadly the laulau was tiny with almost no luau leaves-just the meat. Eggs were eggs. Rice was rice. Overall very meh. Not cheap either. $10 with coffee. They got the extra star for the coffee. I asked them what kind it was and the waitess told me a mix of kona blend and folgers. The coffee, being that weird blend wad quite smooth and flavorful.

When I was sixteen and I rented a room in one of those cinderblock apartments across rice street, and Dani's was a semi-regular place where I would go for breakfast. I particularly remember having Portugese sausages with eggs and rice here for breakfast. Also had poi and lomi salmon here for breakfast alongside of fried eggs. Very much a fixture breakfast joint that caters to those who rise early and eat Kauai style.

I had Kalua pig & rice for lunch. One word: Bland. Maybe we should go back for breakfast so I have could had something more positive to say. Again -- very local in feeling -- smelled better than Hamura Saimin. Cheap food CAN be good. I KNOW it can.

The variety on the menu is excellent. If you're looking to eat the typical American breakfast, i.e., pancakes, Waffles, French Toast, eggs, ham, bacon, or omelets, it's all here and done the right way. What makes this place special are the atmosphere,, the fresh fruits, and the Hawaiian fare. There are typical Hawaiian dishes such as Lau-Lau served over rice, and Portuguese sausages. This place is where all the locals eat.

We went to Dani for breakfast and its great. The service is ok and is fast All breakfast items comes with coffee or hot tea and the the coffee is not bad. If you are adventurous, don't try the normal eggs and bacon. Try some local items Love: Beef Stew and Tripe( if you don't like tripe, the stew itself is very tasty) Hamburger Steak with Gravy, and the Kalua Pig Not so good: The poi( very strange)

I went here on 7-24-10 for breakfast and ordered the kalua pork and lomi lomi salmon, definitely was tasty. I heard their tripe soup supposedly was very good (maybe will order this in the future).

Breakfast menu & serving is just right. They serve Kona coffee as their house coffee. It is off the beaten path but you know when locals are there they are doing something right.

We spent Valentine's week in Kauai this year. In a sea of high-end restaurants, we were definitely craving some local eats. So, at the recommendation of the valet at our hotel (those guys were the best!!), we happily ventured in Dani's. The minute we walked in, we were greeted by dozens of faces that simply looked us up and down. Yep, no hiding that we were mainlanders. It would have been a bit indimitating (more so for my bf, but I fit in ;), but we brushed it off and asked for a table for two. I was excited to see the extensive, local-fare breakfast menu items. I've been craving for some Portugues sausage and eggs! And they were delish!! We came back twice and wished we had more days to explore and order Hawaiian-style laulau (pork and taro leaves wrapped in ti leaves and steamed) or the kalua pig, slow-roasted in an underground oven. All in all, it was great food at good prices!

Sometimes I'll stop here for breakfast, it's convenient in Lihue. Filling, meaty food that always seems to satisfy me. I love the fact that ordering a cup of coffee means they leave me the whole pot. I had the steak and eggs, and it was surprisingly not too greasy, the eggs were perfectly over hard, with good rice, and a super chill atmosphere.
