My husband and I checked in to the Garden Gate B&B for a week's stay. We were shown to a tiny room at the back of the property and did our best to get settled in. The room was very small without any place to put luggage (we had 3 suitcases), and though I couldn't find any proof that it was dirty, the room felt...dingy. To make matters worse - there was no wifi. Let me re-phrase that - there was wifi, but neither my Hubs nor I could access from that room. It was not acceptable. Thankfully the owners, Steve and Jeri were fantastic - incredibly helpful and kind. They were full for the night, but the next day they moved us to a different room, and wow, it was like a completely different place. Top floor, ocean view, king size bed, huge - it was great. We ended up changing our reservation so that we could stay a couple of nights on the North shore of Maui as well, and again, Steve and Jeri were more than willing to accomodate our changes with no penalty. Upon our return, we were put in yet another room - also on the top floor. This room was equally as nice as our last, but again seemed...dingy. The bedspread definitely needed washing, and there were remnants left from the last guests. There was also a really funky smell that we couldn't trace, and no amount of open windows could erase it I know that the housekeeper was in a rush to clean the room because she knew we would be coming back early, and the fundamentals were clean (sheets, towels, bathroom) so we didn't make a fuss. The breakfast was simple, but more than adequate - fresh fruit and pastries, yogurt, juice and coffee. And the courtyard was beautiful. even when we had a room with wifi, we found that we would hang out in the courtyard anyway. The place itself was good and the price was fair - it is really all dependant on what room you get - and they could stand to be a little more stringent on their housekeeping, but the friendly, attentive service of Steve and Jeri more than made up for those minor quibbles.

Nice rooms, convenient to the beach. Lots of little touches to make stay like home. Fresh pineapple for breakfast was adequate but would recommend the innkeepers consider serving a more robust offering of local breakfast specialties. Would also recommend they team up with a local coffee producer such as Maui Coffee growers...would save you a morning drive.

Note: This experience is based solely on the reservation process and the fact that they actually appear reticent about refunding the money even if the reservation is canceled (several months in advance!). I had made a reservation via Expedia at this hotel and oddly enough, they were very prompt at charging me $1,000+ for the reservation. Most hotels wait and charge you close to the reservation date or when you actually check in. No matter; happens sometimes. However, I actually ended up canceling the reservation (still three months away from the date of making the reservation) within a few hours of making the booking. Wonder of wonders, they suddenly said there will be a $50.00 cancellation fee. I actually called up Expedia to ask them why there was a cancellation fee as I was NOWHERE during the reservation process informed that there would be one. Expedia said the hotel controls that completely and they just chose to show the cancellation fee only when the guest decides to cancel. The next day, the hotel contacts me to ask me why I made the cancellation and that they'd be happy to move my dates if something else works better. Fair enough, they want to win their guest back, but I explain the reason for cancellation. I explicitly ask them to go ahead and cancel and issue my refund. I also ask them whether they can waive the cancellation fee but they give me some bogus explanation about them getting some overhead charges to cancel. For God's sake, I canceled the reservation within a few hours. I doubt they would have lost a million customers by then or have accrued any financial penalty for this (I work in the financial Industry). They confirm I'll get charged only the cancellation fee and be refunded the rest. Anyhow, I am just waiting for them to cancel the PENDING charge of $1,000+ and bill me a new charge of $50.00 for the cancellation fee but guess what they do. Two days later they post a charge me for the WHOLE amount of $1,000+. As of the day I am writing this review, it has been almost ten days since I made and canceled the reservation but there is no initiative from the hotel's side for refunding the purchase. Why they even allowed the transaction to post is beyond me as they could easily have just canceled the pending transaction, even if they wanted to charge me just the fee. I am sure this is not a shady organization and I don't dispute the fact that they may actually have very good service onsite. However, this is not the way you do business with even potential customers, i.e., spring up a surprise cancellation charge on your guests (check Expedia) AND withhold their money indefinitely even in case of a cancellation.

My wife and I stayed a night here during our stay in Maui. Room was clean, spacious, with a great full bathroom. Staff was very friendly and accommodation of our late check in. Our room was a converted space next to the garage, there were really no viewing windows in the room. We knew there would be no ocean view but it did feel quite separated from the outside world. Not a huge negative, but I would make sure we had some good windows or a nice view if I were to stay again. Price was great though.

After camping in our VW Vanagon all the way to Hana..beach hopping in Paia and Kihei, we caught the bus and headed to La'haina and found exactly what we were dreaming of at the Garden Inn B&B...a cozy clean bed to catch some ZzZz's :) and nice shower and a little cable tv (for the husband) to get his SportCenter fix ;) Jeri and her son were very sweet. We had a couple yogurts & water bottles from the continental breakfast. And even though we were only staying for the night..I appreciated all the thought put into our Studio and the complimentary items it came with I.e. Quality Shampoo, body wash, dishes, glass wear, cooking utensils, even Saran Wrap and a cutting board :) exactly the kind of place we enjoy staying at seeing as we like to shop & cook like the locals while traveling :)

Steve and Jeri are both the epitome of what I think of as a "people-person." The room we were in is called the Lanai room, andI loved it. It has a balcony overlooking the ocean. The bed was King-sized- comfortable and facing the balcony so you will wake up to a beautiful view. The shower has wonderful water pressure. They also provide shampoo and conditioner of pretty nice quality! It's definitely much higher-grade than anywhere else I have ever stayed, and I am very picky (ultra sensitive skin). Steve and Jeri also provide beach chairs, towels, snorkel gear and flotation devices for your beach excursions. It's up for grabs at any time. I didn't use the snorkel stuff because we'd already rented some, but made use of everything else. They are full of great recommendations for the best beaches and restaurants, and they'll help you locate the best parking. They have a small dog named Coco, who may be the most chill small dog I have ever met. She's incredibly cuddly and personable. Take that from someone who prefers big dogs, too! I don't like small, yippie dogs, either. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here. The negative reviews I have seen on Yelp should all be taken with a grain of salt. The value you get for the money you spend is perfect. If you want to be treated like royalty, you will spend from your royal coffers. If you want to be treated like family, stay here!!

Our stay in the B&B was memorable and I cannot say enough of how hospitable and helpful Jeri and Steve were in accommodating us with a lot of the excursions of places to go and things to do in the island. This made the vacation less hectic as we were able to fill our daily schedule with lots of fun things. Also, the breakfast meal were plentiful and of great variety of pastries and fresh fruits. Thanks again Jeri and Steve for your hospitality.

Recently stayed here for 4 nights and it was AMAZING! I cannot think of a better place to stay for the price. Pros: *The rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable! *Breakfast was served every morning. Steve and Jeri even packed us a to go breakfast when we had an early outing! *No charge for parking *close to front st *washer on site Lastly, Steve and Jeri were great! They are real people friendly and will give you suggestions on what to do and eat! Steve was the tour guide and made it an unforgettable trip! Will definitely stay here again! Garden gate isn't for everyone, its for the lucky ones!

Best inkeepers Jeri and Steve! Absolutely adorable setting, great room, awesome breakfast, wonderful hosts!!! Jeri is an outstanding cook with a wonderful warm personality, I could have stayed in and hung out with her but we had plenty of activities to do, thanks to Jeris suggestions!! The price was so affordable especially compared to the over priced resorts. I really enjoyed the quietness and hospitality of Garden Gate! I would send all of my friends and family there! Thank you Jeri and Steve!!!

We enjoy staying at B and B's and this place was a real treat. It is close to Lahaina, about a 5 minute drive to downtown. The view of the ocean is the real seller! They do have a lovely garden as well. The staff is friendly and helpful, and I think the prices are very competitive for the size of the room. We found Lahaina to be a favorite spot on the island, and this place was fantastic.

After gorging ourselves at a near by luau my boyfriend and I were lucky enough to stumble upon this oasis of a bed a breakfast! I have so many wonderful things to say about this place but I will stick with the highlights: We got there rather late at night and our hosts were kind enough to turn the air conditioning on in the room before we got there so it was truly bliss when we first walked in. The whole room was gorgeous and impeccably clean. The bed was super plush and comfortable. Everything was so comfy that it felt like a home away from home.. with a much better view :) The hosts were beyond friendly and very hospitable. They were even kind enough to let me borrow their phone charger for a few hours when I realized that I had forgotten mine. I honestly cannot think of one negative thing to say. Our one night stay at the Garden Gate B&B was the best night that we had in Maui and if they were not fully booked the next day I would have happily stayed another night!

What a headache. My review is only of GG's shady booking because I never ended up staying here. They told me to enter my credit card information to "reserve" a room without telling me the total amount I'd be charged. THEN they called back to change the quoted price by $10, which would have been ok. But, without giving me confirmation, they added $50 in extra taxes and fees to what I was quoted on the phone, I said I didn't want the room. They said, "ok - just pay the $50 cancellation fee." I objected and they insisted I had to pay it even though they never gave me a quote until AFTER they charged me Since then, GG has repeatedly attempted to charge my credit card - first $50 and now another $186. Its an ugly dispute process. Be warned! Update: GG's proprietor told me the $186 re-billing was an accident(?). This makes me even more uncomfortable that they have my credit card info. I said I'd remove this post after I got my $ back (Visa said it takes 1-2 billing cycles to resolve disputes). I told GG this, but she continues to call/ email me and warned me "not to play games." I had to block her from my phone and will probably cancel that credit card.

Okay - after a week of Polynesian food - I needed a BURGER! COOL CAT is your place. Good quality food and portions. Right next to the warf so we could see the fishing boats. Tricia had the fish tacos and seamed to enjoy them. A must eat location your next time to Lahaina, HI.

The Garden Gate Inn was an absolutely lovely place to stay! The view from my room was AMAZING and the hosts were really attentive and sweet! The location is absolutely perfect and the backyard is so serene, especially rocking on the hammock. The bed was incredibly comfortable as well! This is a perfect spot for a romantic getaway!!! :)

I have fond memories of Garden Gate. Of course, most people would say that about the place where they had their honeymoon ;-) A psychologist would say, "The hotel you sleep in reveals your personality." IMHO the shrink is right about this. The purpose of my travels is to experience a different place, immerse in its culture, see its sights, NOT enjoy the hotel room. I'm fine with Motel 6, or camping (if it's available). Lahaina has neither. It does have the Garden Gate: a relatively inexpensive, clean, tidy place on the north end of town, good for travelers like me. It doesn't try to build up romantic feelings, that's up to you, heh heh. Both of us grew up camping and rarely stayed in hotels, so simple was fine. Refrigerator included, so you can buy your food at the grocery store if you'd rather not eat out all the time. The breakfast was along the lines of other B&B breakfasts I've had (i.e., not a lot of choice). Breakfast was also the community meal, when we conversed with the other travelers staying here. Nice landscaping (I should note that Lahaina is on the dry side of Maui, so the lush flora associated with The Aloha State does *not* grow here naturally). It's not the Dreamland Hotel; Ka'anapali has plenty of those. But Hawai'i is a dreamland anyway, so if you don't need your accommodations to be dreamy, this is a practical home-away-from-home that works well.

Pros: Nice Garden Continental breakfast Cons: The continental breakfast is very sparse and only provided on week days I did not feel the room was clean when I arrived, the toilet was dirty, there were ashes in the sink and on the bedspread and the carpet had pebbles and crumbs The room was very small The towels do not get changed frequently, even if drenched The coffee grounds made in room will stay in your trash all weekend There is a 30 day cancellation requirement so there is no way to check out if unsatisfied I don't know what the suites are like, but the standard room for $130/night felt like a hostel. I'm fine with hostels, but not for $130 a night. All in all, I wouldn't stay here again. UPDATE - Garden Gate did contact me, and were concerned. So I say that is a good sign for the future and possibly it was an off week for them when I was there.

I visited Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast recently and was really impressed. The owners are very friendly and accomodating and the rooms were immaculate. I can't think of a better "off the beaten path" place to stay when visiting Maui. Their rates are fantastic!
