Un-reliable. Website states: "La Provence is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM." . LIE. Don't show up during lunch with family expecting to get a veggie sandwich if you're vegetarian, because their website is in-correct. Apparently they don't serve lunch at 1pm on a Saturday. And they are far from accommodating. Soy milk for coffee? Nope. Fruit salad or anything? Nope. I have no problem with places not accommodating vegetarians etc. But DON'T advertise one thing on your website, and do the complete opposite. Thanks for ruining our family day, La Provence. Change your website so people aren't mis-lead.

Having read all the bad reviews (except for the food), a group of us decided to see for ourselves. To our delight, the service was excellent, granted we were the only customers at the time, no flies, no rodents, no angry words heard as we had read about. We were immediately seated and the server was very attentive and professional. He had a French (?) accent and was so handsome, and he was the only good view we enjoyed. Oh, la la. "The breathtaking view" that was marveled about does not exist, but it didn't matter. So far so good. The food-0MG. We were not disappointed! The roast beef sandwich with au jus is out of this world. Crispy crust french bread with the tender and juicy roast beef is anyone's dream. Just as awesome is the cherry turnover -- crisp on the outside with a soft- like- butter center. The amount of cherries is just enough, not too overwhelming or too sweet. With the coffee, it was heavenly. My friends had the crepes for lunch and chocolate crepes for dessert. They enjoyed everything. The chocolate is made from scratch. Rate this a 5 plus. I had the chocolate crepes at Cafe des Amis in Paia long ago and they used Nutella. Rate that a 1. Never went back. Can't wait to go back to La Provence sooner than later!

I love going to La Provence for lunch whenever I go to Maui and adore the veggie crepe. I haven't really tried anything else because it is SO delish. The almond tart is to die for. I don't want to tell anyone this because whenever I'm up there, they are SOLD OUT of this!! C'est incroyable!!! Ambiance is quasi French.

I love this restaurant for a melt-in-your-mouth pastry to go or a leisurely meal al fresco (outdoors). They run it with a small staff and they get busy, so get your Hawaiiana spirit on and relax, it is worth slowing down for. CASH or check only, so come prepared. They do not have strong internet, so no credit card machine and the website may not be up-to-date, a phone call might be in order if you are making a special trip. My experience with the owner, who was also our waiter and may even have been preparing our food the day we had lunch there, was great. I am confused about the vegetarian issues, at least for breakfast and lunch, there were options, unless also gluten intolerant. It's a French restaurant and specializes in crepes and delicious baguettes and pastries. Dinner is only a couple nights a month and they recommend calling or stopping by for the information in advance. I have no idea why some people are so harsh here - I understand the expectations may be high especially if you drove a distance or are on a tight schedule, but it is not the mainland, its the Maui upcountry, relax and enjoy.

I come to Maui-Pukalani for work frequently and this is my goto place for breakfast. Coffee is great and baked goods are delicious. The outside patio is relaxing and has nice views. Gets busy around 8:30 so come early!

I get such a chuckle from reading about someone's vacation being wrecked because a restaurant hasn't updated its web site. Really? Here's why I like La Provence as much as I do - you never know what the mood is until you walk through the door. How fun to have a taste of French personality in a laid back place like Maui. La Provence is an unexpected pleasure off the beaten path. My first time was so unscripted I couldn't think fast enough on my feet to join in the repartee. As I drove away after a delightful lunch of yummy sandwiches and crepes, I realized I'd just enjoyed France in Kula, Maui. Incroyable! Sure it's nice to know a little about a restaurant before you go there. And yes, Yelp can be helpful if the place is really awful. But if the good reviews outweigh the bad reviews, ignore the bad ones and enjoy a good meal. Don't forget, you can always call on the phone in advance of your visit. That's what I plan to do today.

Really delicious pastries. I didn't realize they didn't serve breakfast daily (which was the only downside), but the pastries were an amazing substitute!

The wife and I had just finished Haleakala and were hungry so we decided to give this place a shot. The signage out front is kinda small so I passed it on accident as it's kind of in an unassuming place (right across from a gas station/auto shop). It's a very small place with outside (covered and uncovered) seating and we were a bit confused on if we seat ourselves and a waiter comes up to you or what exactly. We heard a French voice from inside tell us that we can sit anywhere but need to order inside as they are not a full breakfast restaurant. That day they only had croissant's, danish, pastries and two kinds of quiche. We both opted for the ham and cheese quiche and paid with cash (cash only BTW). By God they were the most amazing thing ever! The egg was so light and fluffy it was like you were eating foam and the crust was very light and flaky,. We devoured our food and then split another right after that. You will not be disappointed if you are a quiche fan by any means and the atmosphere outside overlooking the country side, kinda makes you feel like you are in the France in that same setting. Very well done.

Wonderful almond croissant and ham and cheese quiche. We liked it so much we decided to get more to go. Just sorry we were introduced to this place late in our trip. We will definately visit La Provence again next year.

I've been here a few times for breakfast. You won't find the most extensive of menus, but everything they have is and/or looks great. Their bennies best those at Charlie's (and that's saying something. What really sets this place aside is its location. You wouldn't expect finding such a place in the heart of rural Upcountry and one could drive past it dozens of times without noticing it. The location makes this restaurant intimate. La Provence is really a gem.

Aloha. This is my favorite place to eat in Maui. I read some of the reviews of people who were not happy with the service and the temper of staff, daughter and owner. Yes you might perceive some strange evil eyes if you piss them off, feel like nobody see you, and yes experience some flies at some seasons. To all of you I say get a life! Imagine getting up in the morning at 3 am every morning and working hard at making the best pastries...then cooking. By 8 am it feels like fog in the head no matter how many coffee you drink. First the owner Thiery and his daughter have a love and hate relationship but mostly love!...They are both good people with bad ass attitudes mostly due to fatigue and French arrogence. They know they are the best.. So La Provence is a great place to go to practice YOUR OWN ALOHA! Yes there are flies at times...so what...do you prefer chemicals spraying, fly trip hanging from your parasol? Grow up...go pump some GMO chemical up your behind! So think of it this way when you go to La Provence eating there is like your driver license.: .it is a privilege and not a given right. Lol. Did you ever try making a croissant? If not go to you tube and look how much work is involved. So yes sometimes you got to be really patient with the service...sometimes the staff is new from help that could not handle working there anymore. They get super busy at times...and it must be hard to remember who is who! So take it easy...the worse that can happen is you wait...it is worth the wait. Relax...it is not the mainland here. There is one cook...Can you cook faster than him and better? ....impossible can tell you that! Price are very reasonable. So yes...they are moody at times. Like everybody they have ups and downs. Just kill them with kindness, ignore the perceived rudeness at times...they just have no patience nor time for complainers! So imagine you are visiting a country ruled by a benevolent dictator...just shut up and enjoy eating! The scenery is kind of romantic, peaceful and beautiful! it is a beautiful settings...bring your smile, humility and good humor. Just be a masochist for a for a hour in case service is slow...it won't kill you. If you feel like complaining ...go ahead make a spectacle and amuze the rest of us who will have one more delicious pastry in your name! So we will no longer have to rush in the morning worrying about getting there before you eat the last one. LOL.

I...actually have not tasted croissants like this in the US. Maybe Quebec. Fantastic. The mercuriality of le proprietor adds to his affability- just don't buy more than 2 per person or you will invoke his wrath. The scones are a diversion.

This man claims to be a French pastry chef. HE IS! His croissants, tarts, and quiches are as good as we've had in France. His dough is remarkable - it shows great pastries can be made even in upcountry Maui. His lunch menu is pretty ordinary, very limited, bordering on boring. But the display case is filled with great breakfast treats, so come for the pastries, not salads or sandwiches. Driving this far up country just for a pastry is a bit much. But if you're heading in this direction (even to/from Mt. Haleakala) consider the detour. There's nothing to match it on Maui. Don't believe the "Wait to be Seated" sign. We did, for five minutes, then finally went inside, where we were told the sign only applies for lunch and dinner. And the way we knew that was...??

My most favorite place in Maui (or anywhere for that matter). I can't believe I haven't reviewed the best bakery ever. Found La Provence on Yelp last year, and went back twice on my 5-day trip to Maui this February. Absolutely THE BEST croissants (butter, almond, chocolate) I've ever had -- yes, even better than croissants I've had in France. Everything (palmier, sticky bun, tart) is good, but you HAVE to try a croissant and their turnovers. I also really enjoy the espresso here. I've never had a problem with service or seating. Ignore the whiners on Yelp -- don't wanna miss out on some tasty sweet treats (plus, whiners who use Yelp to get freebies/special treatment are such a waste of time). CASH ONLY.

Got there at 1:50 on Sunday and it closes at 2, which we didn't know. I yelled "Hello?" from outside because I saw workers inside by the window. I just wanted to see if they can still sell anything or totally closed for the day. They ignored us. Pretty certain they noticed me. Yep, bad service.

The food here is really good. You should try their quiche and crapes. However, you should not come here hungry. It is a small place with only a few outside tables. On the weekends it gets really busy and you might end up waiting for a table for a long time. Then you might end up waiting for your food and coffee for a very long time too. This place is best for a lazy morning when you have plenty of time and are not in a rush. The view is really beautiful which makes waking for your food more acceptable. I am giving this place only 3 stars because of their horrible service. The staff is rude and unfriendly. They make you feel like they are doing you a favor by having their restaurant open and serving food.

  • Tash M.

Kinda bummed they only have sit down breakfast on fridays and saturdays, but took home an amazingly delicious pastry (bye bye, diet!) Around $3.50-$6 for the pastries. Also, they are closed on Monday and Tuesday! Parking can be hard to find, unless you do an illegal and park by the realty office next door :-O

Beautiful pastries, especially the meringue. Perfect little crab quiches too. Definitely worth a stop if you are passing through Kula. May be a little pricey (as others have noted) but obvious care and quality ingredients are worth it. Service was fine.

Hahahaha my experience was exactly as other yelpers said it would be!! Great food and terrible, terrible service!! The service was horrible!! But- at least I knew what I was in for.... Walked in, stood there for 8 minutes while a female employer walked by us several times without even acknowledging our existence. Finally a male employee sat us, as we sat down we could hear both tables on either side of us loudly complaining about god-awful service and being ignored. A man finally stood up and physically grabbed the waiter to complain. The waiter didn't really seem to care. My gf told me to relax- I mean we knew this was going to happen right? We were promptly ignored for a long time. Finally the waiter took our order. The food came out pretty quick- and it was PHENONEMAL!! The crepes and eggs Benedict were RE-DONKULOUS. So good it was stupid. Totally worth getting the terrible service. Btw- cash only. Service- 0 stars Food- 5 stars

Went for lunch on Saturday , and when we got there they said they only served breakfast on the weekend, which on the website there is no breakfast menu or indication of this no lunch on the weekend deal. I didn't even think they served breakfast because there was no menu online. No vegan option for breakfast, so my sister couldn't eat. There were vegan options on the lunch menu, but again, no lunch on the weekends. The food was good. Salad dressing was amazing (never had salad as a side for a breakfast dish, but it was good) n the little fried potato was awesome. The actually crepe itself was good. I got the veggie and goat cheese one. Veggies were pretty soggy, but it was still good flavor despite the mushiness. Everyone else seemed to be satisfied by their meal as well. It's out door seating and there are SO many flys. It was hard to enjoy our food when tiny flys were getting stuck to out plate, and big flys were flying in out face an on our food. I probably won't return though because the flys were just too much for me....

In the top 10 things in life brunch and movies rank right after family, friends, making love, and good health. I have only walked out of one movie (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) and honestly cannot recall leaving a restaurant, especially one with a great brunch reputation, without eating... until now! Went there Sunday around 11 AM, our 2nd visit, despite remembering how long we waited when we visited back in February. I will not bore you w/ the minute-by-minute torture, here are the low lights - fly's by the dozens, inattentive waiter, disingenuous apologies for the wait, and no apparent regard for their reputation. After a 20 minute wait, during which we had coffee and croissants which we picked up in the shop when we arrived to ride out the wait we knew was coming, we were informed it would be another 15 minutes before they could TAKE OUR ORDER! (said with a straight face) Yelpers, can we start a revolution?! Give this establishment the rating it deserves. I have been to France and to Provence. This level of poor service has nothing to do with either. Only on sitcoms and movies should people trade witty banter while being ignored by the staff of a dusty roadside diner then pay for the pleasure. We drove 10 minutes up the road to Kula Lodge and guess what?! No flies, a stunning view, they took our order promptly, food arrived shortly thereafter, and it was delicious! I gladly paid the bill (w/ a credit card! no less) and tipped the waitress for being pleasant and attentive. Voila! P

Very solid pan au chocolat and croissant jambon and quiche. First place we stopped after we arrived on the way to the B and B. only al fresco seating so was a very brisk and foggy breakfast.

We sought out this small resturant based on the lonely planet Maui guide. We hit it coming back from a long morning on Haleakala. The lunch menu was simply done and filling. I had the chicken with Brie and salad. The dressing was excellent. I ate the whole sandwich and thought it was a great way to finish off our trek. My partner had the roast beef with horseradish and au juis. He raved about it. The service is not fast but you have to understand that small businesses do not work like chains. If you need speed, why did you drive to Kula? We took some pastries home for dessert. The almond tart, the chocolate pastry cream croissant horn, and the puff pastry crispy(?).

  • Mitzi D.

I love what this place "could" be. In a side street up in Kula this place has the potential to be amazing. I came for lunch last week during an overcast Friday. The seating is all out doors and a little chilly. I had a chicken sandwich and my cousin a savory crepe. While the good was good it was hard to enjoy it 1) while being served by someone who never smiled 2) battling the flies that lingered 3) surrounded by debris and other trash 4) the wind blowing the smell of the large trash bin. We ended the meal with a pastry each. I had a delicious cream horn. We wanted a crepe but was told they stopped serving them for the day. I want to return to this place just because I think or hope it could be better.

I have been faithful to La Provence over the years and love this place. Today, not so much. The food is good, but the service, completely unbelievable. I'm in food service and the treatment today was awful. After waiting 15 minutes to be seated (the waitress kept saying she'd be back and then ignored me the rest of the time), it took over 10 minutes to be helped and at that time we told the waitress we were ready to order. She ignored us. After another 5 minutes, we got her attention and told her we were ready to place our order. Her response, "Well, the restaurant is busy so I can't take your order and you'll have to wait." We asked how long, and she said 15 minutes. So we asked if we could just place it and then have her put it in later. Her reply, "Yeah, I can take it but it'll just sit in my pocket." That's fine - just let us know up front that it will be awhile but NEVER ever tell a customer that you CAN'T take their order. Especially when the couple behind us already placed their order. What made it worse, when she walked away, the customer at the neighboring table made a comment about us to the waitress about "why can't they just wait" to which the waitress agreed and made a face. I was irritated, but I took a deep breath. So, we waited, and waited, and after the 15 min. waiting to be seated, 15 min. to place an order, another how long before the order went in, 3 cups of coffee, my friend who got up to check on the food because her blood sugar was getting low, we got our food, Got there at 9:15am, got our food at 11am. Yes, it was good. It's always good. But, I've given this place many chances and I will never sit and order food again. I love their pastries enough to go to the counter, but I have been abused there too. Once the owner came out and told me (after I ordered 4 palmiers), "It should be against the law to buy that many palmiers!" And how he needs to have some for his regulars. Excuse me, I am one of your regulars. But, they are good and I will still buy them once in awhile.

Charming french bakery with good food, way too pricey for the portions. Staff are not very friendly. Once they said, "we'll take your order in 5 minutes". Very busy usually.

Hooooooly moly! This place is goooood! I ordered the spinach and crab crepe (highly recommended), and it blew my mind. The crepe was extremely soft and abundant flavor. For the price of around $10, you get a good size crepe and a salad. The salad had a special house dressing that was very tasty. Everything was extremely fresh. I believe that La Provence uses local produce. If your in the mood for french type of pastries, such as: tarts, quiche, crepes, and etc... your going to have to make a stop here.

My father and I had lunch at La Provence based on the recommendation of Michael, our host at the Upcountry B&B. He definitely pointed us in the right direction. Thierry serves up some of the most authentic French food I've had outside of France (having myself previously lived in Paris). The chicken and brie crepe with house greens I had was delicious and there was not a crumb to be left from my father's roast beef au jus. While disappointed that all of the chocolate croissants had already been bought up for the day, the pain aux raisins and the blueberry mango scones we took away for a later snack were scrumptious. Given that the only seating is on the patio, be sure to bring a light jacket or wrap if it's on the cool side. Looking across the patio on a slightly overcast or cloudy day, you might just mistake yourself for being in Provence instead of on Maui.

  • Emily E.

The crepe and coffee were really good! The staff were nice. However, the ambience on the patio was somewhat lacking. If a little more time was given to the plants and outside decor, this restaurant would be five stars.

A local from Kula recommended this little gem to us. It's slightly far away from the usual touristy places, but it's worth the drive. It's very quaint with a nice view, though parking is hard to find. Our party ordered a variety of dishes ranging from quiche, salmon & pesto crepe, and eggs benedict. The votes were unanimous that food was great! The portions are just right and the service was down to earth and friendly. One complaint we had was that we didn't order our dessert fast enough and by the time we were ready to head inside to make a choice, they were all gone! :( Of course, that is not the restaurant's fault and entirely ours. Not greedy enough, and not fast enough. We'll be back!

This is the best hidden secret upcountry for a little taste of France in Maui. Wonderful pastries made fresh daily. I think it is probably worth 4 stars, but I don't really like the wait service and table seating. I recommend this place for the quality of food, but not service.

Found our way here after sunrise at he crater on a beautiful Sunday morning. They open at 7 but unfortunately hot breakfast doesn't start until 8:30 so know that before you go. Had an AMAZING blueberry scone for our drive to the next breakfast spot.

While exploring Maui my fiancé spotted a small sign for this restaurant, so we stopped to check it out. This is a really cozy restaurant with great ambiance. Everyone that worked at the restaurant had French accents, which is a plus. The server gets bonus points for her black leather Chuck Taylors. We ordered a fish sandwich and a spinach and crab crepe. My fiancé was ecstatic about the bread on the sandwich being authentic French bread and I found the bread to be quite good as well as the rest of the sandwich. I was excited about the crepe having real crab meat instead of krab. I believe they made the dressing on the salad out of the lilikoi they grew on the fence in the dining area, it was also delicious. We finished off the meal with a deliciously tender apricot tart. I'm guessing the only other place you'll be able to find a meal that tastes like this is in France. The baked goods (i.e. tart and bread) are like nothing I've ever had. The downside is it's extremely hard to spot from the road. We found it by pure luck.

Great view, decent food, slow service. If you are in a rush, pass. If you want to relax and enjoy a beautiful view with nice crepes and eggs benedict, stop by. But seriously, the service is insanely slow. Been back a few times, always the same, good food but slow and unintentionally inattentive service.

  • Levi M.

Maybe the best Eggs Benedict on the island. Unbelievable pastries, scones, tarts, and baked goods, which sell out early. Weekends are crepes and bennies, weekdays they also have salads, all the food is excellent. Made by a real Frenchman who curses under his breath whenever someone comes in because it means he has to keep cooking. And like a real French cafe, when they are busy the service is usually so bad we often get stuff to go. However, things have been looking up lately, better service and some of the new staff members are actually customer oriented. Don't let that fool you though, the food still rocks.

I think this is one of the best breakfasts on Maui. Worth the drive from Kihei or Lahaina. I usually get a crepe or a benedict. Both amazing. Their food quality is very good. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star is the service usually isn't very good. Only go here if you are not in a hurry and don't mind being there for awhile. The service is extremely slow with sometimes a bit of an attitude, but if you have no plans, the food is worth the wait.

This is one of the best bakery I have had in my life! Have to try their ham and cheese quiche, it was so good we had to go back again before our flight back to mainland. We also tried their almond croissant, some kind of apple pie, chocolate cream thingy and couple other thing that I can't name, but they are all very good. The sweet ones were just right, not too sweet, make you want to eat more. Too bad there's a limitation on our stomach. The coffee are also good. Service was excellent, very friendly!

  • Grant J.

Got there right when it opened. Pastries were still warm from the oven. Delicious! Coffee was good too. Only gripe was no service for breakfast entrees on weekdays - good thing the fresh baked pastries, sandwhiches, and quiches made up for the lack of a full menu.

  • Trudy T.

Just had the best quiche we've ever had! A wonderful gem tucked in an unexpected part of Maui. We stopped here for breakfast on our way down from watching the sunrise at Haleakala crater. Although their full menu didn't kick in until 11am, we were able to get fresh out of the oven quiches, and freshly baked almond croissants, fruit tarts and scones. Everything was DELICIOUS!! Worth a stop for sure.

I almost gave this place 4 stars because the service was slow and it's hard to find, but I couldn't do it because I loved the food so much. And the view was great! I got the veggie sandwich for lunch and it came with a nice fresh side salad. All the flavors were spot on and I was full when I left. I can't wait to try their bakery items next time!

Location can be hard to find, not well marked. Parking is fine. The atmosphere is wonderful, being in Kula and you can oversee the valley. Food: Had croissant which was made that morning, very tasty, flaky! Quiche which had spinach, goat cheese and mushrooms was very filling and rich. Price was probably premium if I had to say. Service: this was probably my gripe, I understand that the croissants were made fresh this morning, but I like mine warm, did she have to be rude when I asked for it to be heated up a little bit?

You cannot find better croissants anywhere! The scones are to die for...mango and berry, the quiche is creamy and the crust soooo flaky!!! Breakfast is weekends only....had the bacon, tomatoe, avocado Benedict...yummy.....great views. Cash or check only. I always try to visit while on the island

I should be giving La Provence a two star rating because of how bad they treat their customers. There isn't enough staff, so you're constantly waiting around, they frequently run out of many menu items and they only take cash, but their eggs Benedict is amazing. The 3 stars are because of how good their different Benedicts are. They only serve them on Sat and Sunday (annoying), but in all fairness, they are awesome. So is their coffee btw. If you require good customer service & accommodating staff, this place is not for you. If you are willing to deal with such inconveniences and love eggs Benedict, go ahead and make the trek to Kula.

  • Rachael T.

For years, La Provence has been wowing people with their classic French cookery, by way of delicious morning pastries, quiches, eggs Benedict's and crepes. The bread they use for their sandwiches, which are offered during their select lunch days are daily fresh made baguettes with all the chewy goodness of the real deal. It is clear they use fresh and quality ingredients in all their preparations, including real cream for their wowza coffee and local greens for their salads. The daily soups are simply outstanding and it is often difficult to decide what to order. I tend to 'want-it-all' when I dine here, but know my waistband and wallet need some consideration. It is a small outdoor seating venue and family owned and operated restaurant high in Kula, surrounded by the beautiful foliage of the local lilikoi vine, which puts out the most delightful, whimsical and purple flowers. Combined with the kaleidoscope weather of upcountry Maui, it is a very pretty, surreal, and peaceful place to dine. As other Yelpers have already commented, the service is ungodly slow due to the fact that there is only ever one young girl wo-manning the espresso machine, cash register, pastry deli, seating, taking orders, filling water, making change, clearing dishes, as restless as a scurrying mouse. I believe she is the daughter of the owner/chef, I have seen her there for years now. She works in the best way possible for her to be able to accomplish all of her responsibilities on her own, which is not necessarily the best way to cater to the anxious clientele, and is an issue that would behoove management to scrutinize.

We found ourselves upcountry in Kula and decided to have breakfast at La Provence. This adorable restaurant is nestled high above the tourist laden Maui coastline, and because of its location temperatures are mild here with refreshing breezes that cool the air around you. Once you enter through the flower laden arch it's like being transported to a little slice of heaven and you forget all about the car repair shop across the street because you are sitting on a beautiful patio with sweeping views of Maui laid out before you. There is a case full of freshly baked pastries, though we were told by a regular that you must arrive early because the best items usually sell out by 10:00 am. The menu offers a variety of crepes and eggs benedicts along with potatoes au gratin and a salad for brunch, as well as their quiche du jour and salad. We went inside to grab a few pastries to enjoy with coffee while we waited for our food to arrive. We had some sort of pastry that appeared to be comprised of layers of phyllo dough, butter, and caramelized sugar, it was so light and flaky and a perfect accompaniment to the coffee. The apricot tart was sinfully delicious, each piquant bite of fresh apricot was in pleasant contrast to the smooth and creamy custard beneath it. We ordered the mahi mahi eggs benedict, the veggie eggs benedict, and the crab and spinach crepe. Everything that we ordered was excellent, but they seem to particularly excel at eggs benedict. The crab and spinach crepe was tasty, but you have to really be a fan of spinach to enjoy this dish as it was packed full of the leafy greens. My dad really enjoyed his veggie benedict which had roasted eggplant, zucchini, and bell peppers that were seasoned with herbs de provence topped with a perfectly poached egg and a light drizzle of hollandaise. The mahi mahi eggs benedict is now my favorite benedict of all, generous chunks of mahi mahi were lightly seasoned with herbs de provence that were in perfect harmony with the poached egg and hollandaise sauce. The potatoes au gratin were quite rich and I was glad to have the salad which was dressed with an acidic vinaigrette to help cut some of the fat in this dish. We also had the best cup of coffee of our trip while at La Provence, it is a special roast made for the restaurant by Maui Oma and since they have fresh beans delivered each week let me just say you are in for a caffeinated treat. On our next trip I think that I'll buy a few of their croissant sandwiches and their pastries to enjoy as a picnic lunch. Our waitress was extremely friendly, though because she is the only server you will find that there is a bit of a wait during your meal. Don't get upset or irritated if you find your meal is taking longer than usual, remember that you are on Maui and relax and take in the views and the cool fresh air. Just remember to bring cash with you as they are cash and check only, no credit cards my friends. I swear this place is magical, I've found my new favorite restaurant in Maui.

By far, this place has the best scones I have ever tasted, and the quiches are so divine!

The coffee, benedicts, pastries, and crepes are all FABULOUS! The service absolutely sucks. I, myself am a server at a restaurant and am usually very patient with servers when I go out to eat. The young girls that work there don't know what they are doing and have no customer service skills. I've been there a total of 3 times and each time it took 20 minutes to even be greeted and brought a menu. another 15 to order, and by the time the food comes out, its 2 hours later! every time! And you can forget about trying to get a water/coffee/ice tea refill. Any additional requests (extra sauce, more ketchup, a salt shaker) seem damned near impossible. so, if you are not hungover or extremely hungry, and want to spend a nice upcountry morning (and I mean and ENTIRE morning) enjoying a single cup of coffee while watching some grumpy girls run around, and don't mind waiting a long time for food, this place is awesome!

It's Hawaii lay back and enjoy, so that's all I gotta say about da service. The food is awesome. I had the Tomato & Avocado Eggs Benedict, the sauce was perfect and not overpowering. Also took a croissant to go & had it as a snack. Ono!!! Gotta go early if you wanna have a chance to eat any of the pastries!

This used to be our go to place during our bi-annual trips to Maui and we would wait months to indulge in the almond croissants. They used to be large, buttery and FULL of delicious almond paste. The past two times I've gone they were dinky and they totally skimped on the almond paste. Save yourself the calories and order something else, this place may be on the decline.

Talk about tasty pastries. The buttery flavor of their custard filled croissant still tickles my taste buds. This place was incredible. When you're on your way up/down from Haleakala this place is a must for good coffee and excellent pastries.

We were up country in Maui on our way to see the winery, lavender farm, and goat farm. The Lonely Planet guide suggested this place off the beaten path. It truly is as its right across the road from an auto repair shop. Needless to say, the baked goods are as good as any Paris bakery. We ordered the almond croissant, a few ham and cheese croissants, and a few spinach and salmon croissants. They were amazing, flavorful, crispy, and yet light! Two of us ordered the Salad Nicoise and another ordered the salmon spinach crepe. All were excellent. The balsamic vinegar/honey mustard dressing swirl was amazing for the salads. The only thing keeping this joint from getting 5 stars is the lack of any service. They are short staffed and it shows.

What a wonderful breakfast spot after watching the sun rise on Haleakala... or, really, anyday because the food is so fantastic! First, the service we received was courteous, attentive, and not over bearing. We ordered 2 savory (avacado/bacon egg benedict and goat cheese/spinach quiche) and 3 sweet items (Almond croissant, fruit tart, and creme filled chocolate horn (name?)). These may have been too much for our party of 3 adults and 2 small children, but we couldn't resist all the baked goodness. I have to say everything was perfectly prepared! You can tell when a restaurant takes care to take care. The ingredients were fresh and you can taste every single flavor. Highly recommended breakfast/brunch spot!

This review is only for the pastry. Came here after watching the sunrise in the area, was a little disappointed that they don't serve breakfast till 8:30am, however, their pastries and quiches were soooooooooo good. I was lucky that the pomme de chaussette just came out when I arrived, it was warm, crispy and the apple filling just melt in your mouth. It was delicious. We also had croissant aux amandes, croissant de chocolate, another pastry that I forgot it's name but with cream in the middle, quiche and scorn. There was an outdoor seating area, very simple and I believe it's cash only. All the pastries were delicious, worth checking out if you are in the area.

Remember breakfast doesn't start until 8:30am. It's prefect after visiting House of the Sun. This little establishment is cash only; however, for a nominal fee there is a standalone ATM machine at the True Value/gas station about a two minute walk from the place. Now a review of this place- it's funky, awkward seating and hand off of the menus makes this place seem a little pretentious and a bit snobby. Being from San Francisco the weird hipster vibe exuding from this place was tolerable. However, I can understand some of the complaints mentioned about service and attitude but you're in Maui for God's sake and learn to slow down. The bacon, avocado and tomato Benedict was fresh and delicious. The coffee was just ok, nothing special. Their pastries are a must, everything was so good and buttery- the true French way.

So we stopped into this little hidden spot after being awake since 1:30am to see the sunrise: This place has great pastries. We had the veggie and goat cheese quiche ask both apple and the cheery pinwheels. The apple ones had and almond cream inside and the cherry ones had vanilla custard. My favorite was the apple ones. The quiche was delicious and all the food tasted freshly made. Still warm from the oven. When we arrived it hadn't opened yet and when they finally did we come to find out breakfast isn't served until 8:00. I was looking forward to the crab cake Beni. Great food and great view. Overall a nice experience!

The food was decent but for the price I would consider it a good choice for breakfast. I had 2 items, the chicken and brie crepe and the chicken was absolutely not cooked fresh for the crepe; It had that distinct taste like it was reheated in the microwave. The ham and cheese quiche was also decent. If your a quiche fan like I am it'll probably rank on the low end. They are missing a few cheeses that give them the creamy texture that I love. Perhaps it is the french style. Service was excellent.

Having worked in the past as a pastry chef, I am always on the hunt for great pastries wherever I go. In a world awash with pre made, Sysco bake goods, finding a gem like La Provence is a treat. The sticky buns here are, rightfully, legendary and sell out early. A cappuccino. A sticky bun. A seat on their sunny deck. Perfection.

Read the reviews and decided to try this place out after sunrise. Got there around 8:45 and saw a sign saying they served breakfast Wednesday's until the weekend now although reviews said only weekends. The parking lot was still roped off and the gate was locked with no one to be found. Very disappointing since we went out of our way to go. Not surprised after reading the reviews about how terrible the service is.

5 star for delicious pastries- tried the pain au chocolat and spinach, tomato, and goat cheese quiche. Quaint French bakery feel with patio seating. Clean bathroom. Great place to stop after seeing sunrise at Kaleakala. 4-stars for not serving breakfast until 8:30am. Regular coffee was a little watered down but smooth

I felt ackward at this place. The food was delicious, but under staff. We think if they had one more person working, the waiter would have a better attitude. All in all we were annoyed eating delicious food. Such a waste of our time and money.

We stopped in for coffee after the farmers markets in Kula and were so glad we did! This place seems like a hidden gem (or it seemed hidden because we drove up from Kihei). Awesome outdoor atmosphere with friendly service. They were out of goats cheese and strawberries which was okay - I got lilikoi crepes and to be honest not sure why - I don't usually like crepes or lilikoi - BUT THESE WERE AMAZING. Seriously people - you have crepes covered! Small menu but who needs a big one when you can offer a smaller menu and nail it! Some complain about the slow service - suck it up, this is Maui :) It's worth the wait! Worth noting I think you can only pay with cash or check.

Stopped by after watching the sunrise...yummy, freshly baked pasties and coffee! My husband and I originally came for the bfast based on the yelp reviews we read but bfast isn't served until 8:30 :( we got here at 7am. So we stayed for the pastries and coffee. Pastries are pretty big and are $3 each and if you get there right when they open you'll be lucky enough to try them right out the oven

This review is more about the service, which is the worst and they don't apologize for it. We always got carry out and took it home. The last time (several years ago) we brought breakfast home from La Provence, there was HAIR in everything, lots of it...so disgusting. Then they closed for a while. I just found out they reopened so I thought I would try it again, maybe under new management, nope. THE PASTRIES (EVERYTHING THEY SERVE) IS DIVINE if you don't mind the crappy service and chance of unimaginable things baked into it.

Five stars for food Three stars for service The food was incredible. That goes without saying. The service -- well -- let's just say we stood waiting for a table that had already been cleared and cleaned. They just didn't want to seat us, as the kitchen is small (one cook, I think) and gets overwhelmed easily.

Nice peaceful/cozy atmosphere. There were a few locals that were talking smack about tourists but other than that it's a great place! The sticky buns were delicious!

Stopped to grab breakfast before going around south to Hana. We were excited for some crepes but arrived before they started serving breakfast (830am) but there were plenty of freshly baked pastries to choose from. We had a cherry turnover, almond croissant, ham and cheese quiche and a sticky bun. The almond croissant was awesome, sticky bun was really good and the quiche was really fluffy and not dry at all. We saved the cherry pastry for snacking in the car a few hours later, flaky and delicious. Will return for crepes and eggs benedict one day but the pastries were some of the best I've ever had!! Friendly staff and nice outdoor seating area that overlooks upcountry and west Maui mountains.

I cannot imagine a better place! The view, the amazing pastries, the lovely patron, and the journey that makes getting there so delicious. Make sure you have plenty of time and get there early for the best selection.

After a lackluster start, with no one around to seat us and an ADD-riddled server that actually left us while we were mid-order, this cute little place up on the hill redeemed itself darn fast. The coffee was fantastic (we had a café au lait and a cappuccino), the food arrived quickly, and every bite was scrumptious! The benedicts are to die for and the lump crab crepe was super fresh. The greens with fresh vinaigrette included with each plate were perfect! We nearly cleaned them out of quiches and pastries when leaving. Highly recommended. We'll be back!

Awesome breakfast spot after watching the sunrise atop Haleakala, open at 7am. Cafe drinks, quiches, scones, and a variety of parties. Nice outdoor seating, cash and checks only. The quiche crust was perfectly flaky and the quick filling (ham&cheese, goat cheese&spinach) was just as tasty.

Just had some La Provence up in Kula. Eggs Benedict And Crepes!!! My eggs Beni was perfect and the Nutella strawberry crepe was awesome. Lil more sauce on the crepes and 5 all da way. Can't beat the upcountry setting and about to checkout the French pastry!!!

I've eaten here several times - for breakfast, lunch and brunch and loved the food and service every time! The crepes, eggs benedict, sandwiches, salads and especially pastries are ALL excellent! Last time I went I had the spinach and mushroom crepe which comes with a side salad, and my partner had the fresh catch sandwich on baguette - all delicious and perfectly prepared. I've loved everything I've tried. They have great lattes and croissants, and you can get pastries to go if you like. Friendly service, though not a place to go if you're in a hurry - it's a great place for a relaxed meal, enjoying the gorgeous view of Maui from the slopes of Haleakala. Only downside is they're closed on Monday and Tuesday.

I know La Provence has gotten some bad reviews in the past but please disregard the negativity. Our lunch today was amazing! My goat cheese salad was fresh and delicious and my fiancé's roast beef sandwich was delicious as well. The service was actually good today and it didn't take a long time. If it had taken a while it would have been worth it. All and all a great lunch, highly recommended!

This place is top drawer all the way. Shared the Spinach and Salmon Benedict and the Brie and Chicken Crepe. Both delicious. I loved the dressing on the fresh side of greens as well. We had the cute little place to ourselves and the fact that our server was a sweet French man really sealed the deal for us. I definitely recommend this quant little taste of France!

I've read some of the reviews on the internet and had a similar experience last time I came there with the slow service BUT some things in life are worth waiting for!!!!! This certainly applies at this establishment. Jesse waited on us and as the only waiter on a Sunday morning had his hands full , but his attitude and positive manner made the wait pleasant while enjoying an excellent cup of coffee in enjoying the outdoor sounds and smells of Kula. My wife ordered the Spinach and mushroom crepe which arrived with fresh local lettuce salad with just enough dressing and potato accompaniment. Crepe was the real thing filled with Bechamel sauce, and champignons and epinard. My eggs were poached perfectly with hollandaise made just right. If you do not mind waiting and its worth it, the price and food value here is one of the best on Maui., and the Apricot tarts and chocolate pastry horns are as authentic as going to France. Here again is a place where the owner is also the chef.

The pastries are VERY delicious! HOWEVER, the attitude there is bad, which is half the experience (especially if driving all the way from Wailuku). When it was my turn to order in line, the cashier/owner guy smirked at me at me and scoffed/laughed. Then he turned around, washed his hands which was right by the register. He then walked away and spoke to his workers. It was only for about three minutes but they sure don't give off a positive vibe. I wasn't mad, I kinda laughed about it. You're on Maui, not a busy city in New York. Lighten up Provence because you're pastries are amazing. -Bad parking (-1) -Great pastries -Service needs improvement (-1)

CASH ONLY. Nearest Bank of Hawaii and First Hawaiian is 11 minutes back in Makawao. Off pukalani. It was a bit of a let down. Just make sure to have cash on hand and grab a baked good. Server is foreign, he was nice, but there was a bit of a language barrier. There was this lady showing off her french next to us. Good for rich snooty people who want to pretend they're cultured.

First off the food was great. We had ham eggs beni and a ham & cheese crepe. Both were great. We were nervous about the negative reviews on their service but we found none of that. We were seated right away - pick your own table - by a friendly guy. We immediately brought us water and menus. He then brought our coffee and mocha and took our orders. We asked about pastries to take home and he directed us to go inside and have them set aside what we wanted because the go quickly. Our food came out quickly there after. Everything was delicious and we will be back. We came on Sunday morning around 9am. As for parking there is a nice size lot next door.

Dear Lord this place is good! We stopped here for breakfast and couldn't believe how good it was. We had pastries and breakfast sandwiches. All were clearly made from scratch and simply wonderful. Don't let the outside fool you. This place is a gem!

  • Mercedes B.

So yummy- they make great pastries and breakfast and lunch! It's so lovely...Until you see the service- slow and funky- they make you wait to be seated but then never seat you. And once seated you will wait for 45 minutes to order and then another 45 for food. So, go when you can sit around for a few hours- but it's a nice, little, quaint courtyard- so the sitting is fine. Please beware of the ill-tempered owner who has pretty much yelled and belittled most of his employees, including family, and customers... Then here comes his crazy-mean daughter who helps in the kitchen now and stares down patrons with evil eyes and yells at the hardworking staff like they are idiots... Oh yes, she too yells and is beyond rude to customers. So, don't be offended if you never get a smile from them- that's not their nature. Just be happy they didn't pick a fight with you. I see new help working hard and being friendly but sooner or later the horror stories of working with owner and daughter become a reality for the new hires too...Sadly, they never last very long. All that being said- good food and it's Maui- so what ya going to do about it? Just show-up play by their funky seating rules. Keep your head down trying not to make eye-contact with owners so you can enjoy their food. And whatever you do- DO NOT COMPLAIN about anything... After writing this review I might have to go into hiding. Horror stories include physical violence- furniture throwing, plates breaking and screaming matches... You have been warned. Bon appetite!

We ate here at 12:30 on a Saturday, and it was not crowded. Service was very good, and the food was outstanding. The waiter suggested adding avocado to the veggie eggs benedict, which was spot on. The menu was relatively small for brunch - different types of crepes and eggs Benedict, but they were executed perfectly. Really, really great meal! One note though - cash or check only.

Delicious French-food in a great upcountry location. Great food, great service-a bit of a simple menu and I'm not sure where the ingredients are sourced, is the only reason I cannot give it 5 stars. I am definitely a big fan, and will return soon.

Had a great experience here. The food was delicious and priced well and the service was fine. We didn't run into any of the issues you see about this place. We had brunch and shared the bacon and avocado benedict and the goat cheese and vegetable crepe. Both were delicious. The server was friendly and prompt. We were in and out in less than 45 minutes. Some of the best food for the money in Maui.

A real gem in Maui. I owe Yelp! For helpings find this place. We were on our drive from Lahaina to visit the Church if the Holy Ghost and the Volcano State Park.... Feeling a bit hungry, we flipped in Yelp! And this was on the top of the list. How could we say no to a French Bistro? We couldn't. We walked in and noticed it was cash only... Got back in the car and drove 3mi back to longs to get cash. Came back and the Maui Gods were smiling on us. No wait and got a nice table that overlooks the valley. We tried 4 items on the menu and they were all Fantastic. We split a lemon crepe afterwards and were all in a state of bliss. This will be a place we will always return to when we visit Maui.

I've been to this restaurant several times and found the food is so good. Sandwiches excellent, great bread. Crepes ~ excellent and the eggs beni so delicious. It's a must try if you love Kula. They also have a lovely view. I read some reviews about the staff having attitude or bad service. I've never experienced that, you must remember you are in Hawaii and the pace is slower. If you are in a rush don't come here. So slow your roll and enjoy the food.

Super good breakfast, pastries and delicious eggs Benedict. Unfortunately the service is dreaded...don't bother talking to owners because no care what you think. Just shut up, swat flies away and enjoy.

I had the best scone I've ever had here. Apricot and berry was the flavor...I talked about it the whole trip. It's not a huge place with tons of options but it's so adorable. I know it's odd to say the best scone I ever had was in Hawaii at a tiny little cafe. But, it's absolutely true. My husband had the quiche which he said it was really good only he wished it was bigger. The French man working there was so friendly and the little patio with music was so cute. We loved it after the sunrise on Mt. Haleakala! Worth the stop. Get a scone!!
