Since we had been lucky on Oahu in finding decent Thai restaurants, we figured we should try one on Kauai as well... In short, the food here wasn't bad. The waitress was friendly, and she made sure that our food was to be prepared Thai-spicy. We ordered seafood salad, som tom, basil chicken, and fried rice, and everything except for the fried rice (meant to be for our toddler) was indeed burning with chilis. I liked the seafood salad and the som tom, but didn't really care for the basil chicken and fried rice. Prices were agreeable, and our waitress really made us feel welcome. We were aware of the few other Thai restaurants on the island, but after this visit to Sukhothai and with my husband not being exceptionally pleased with the food, we decided to focus on other cuisines. SUM: Not the best, but good enough.

Save your dough on this one. Had the chicken curry and pad Thai. Amazingly both we're the same shade of beige. If you want to revisit the top ramen days of your youth then this place is for you. Unfortunately, the same amount of detail that went into their menu with multiple errors went into the training of their chef. Seriously bland and passionless cooking. Waitress couldn't even say thank you but could take our money quickly enough. Save your Thai cravings for another restaurant on Kauai. They definitely put the suck in sukothai! Booooo!

Meh! The food was OK, really a tad below average. Our vegetarian tofu dish has no tofu. The service was distracted, slow and basically oblivious to us being there. Not much in way of water refills, etc.

I agree is VW about this place being vegetarian friendly. We actually came here 5 years ago and this time we travelled from Princeville for some good Thai food. (We thought there were some up north, but they turned out to be food court style restaurants.) The person taking our order was knowledgable and was helpful even though he was waiting on he rest of the restaurant! We had the garlic mixed vegetables, summer rolls and the vegetable leman grass soup. Someone in our party had a beef salad that he wasn't crazy about. I liked all my dishes. My eyes were bigger than my stomach so we have left overs which is great! (Portions are good!). Overall our experience here was great and we will definitely come back here again :)!!

Not that good. Maybe cuz Im from the bay area and were spoiled with asian food out here but when we went to order some Pad see ew it really was extra eww. Something tasted off. I dont know if they put an xtra ingredient or something but it almost tasted like it had too much herb or star anise. Too overpowering . I asked the misses if she wanted it and she said No!!!! so it went to the GARBAGE!!!!! the other thing I ordered was the calamari , pretty good nice and crispy and fresh , Didnt care for the dipping sauce that it came with tasted like horse radish , next time I will scout for better food

Our go-to place for tasty food! Several delicious choices for vegetarians. Gracious server, on a busy evening, attended to all! Will definitely keep going back!

I always judge a Thai restaurant based on their Tom Kha Gai (Chicken Coconut Soup), and this is the best Tom Kha Gai I have had the pleasure of eating from a restaurant. I only ordered the soup (to go), now I regret that I did not buy more food! It was so FULL of all the traditional delicious ingredients. There was a lot of lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and a few varieties of mushrooms. Even the chicken was really flavorful (often it is not). They did not cut any corners like so many restaurants do. Every single bite was so pleasurable. I did think $10 for a bowl of soup was high until I picked it up and it was almost a quart of soup. It was worth every single penny.

My first impressions where I was anxious why there wasn't many customers. The waitress was very nice, when I ordered I was anxious,I got a Thai iced tea it was delicious, I order hot and sour soup, it was pretty sour and delicious, and I order a medium madsaman curry it was the best I ever tasted, i never finished a whole curry just like that, it was cheap for the three of us the waitress was very nice. When we about to leave it got full. The proportions were huge, basically overall this the best Thai place I been.

My wife took the waiter's recommendation. I didn't. Hers was good. Mine just ok. The waiter however was a riot. The food was out quick. It wasn't the cleanest place though and could use a good cleaning up front. One of the cheaper meals we had on Kauai.

Had chicken Phad Thai. It was alright, but a little light on the spice. Fortunately they had chili sauce on the tabletop add.

Yay! Coke products! Great Cashew Chicken, Tom Yum Kai soup, and Red Curry w/ Chicken medium spicy!

I was a bit sketch at first because it didn't look that great from the outside. It's totally amazing, and if I was a local, I'd go often. I had the Tom Kha Gai, and Massaman curry, and it was amazing. I eat all Thai all the time in San Francisco, and it was better than some places here!!! I'll miss this place. It's authentic, fresh, and tasty.

Great Thai food! Quaint, local spot with a quiet atmosphere and quick service. Pono's creation with shrimp was delicious, as well as the green curry with eggplant and chicken. With two Kona beers, two of us left full for just over $40 (including tip). I would definitely recommend this for a more local (less touristy) experience.

Go for pad thai once in awhile. Gluten and dairy free only for me. Always walkout with a happybelly.

  • Matt T.

I'll be honest -- this restaurant looks a little run down. So we were pleasantly surprised by how great the food was. We got the Asian Fish, Pad Su Mee, Massaman Curry, and Pong's Special. All were fantastic. Add to that a really attentive server who is the niece of the auntie chef in the back -- she was super nice!

Oh how awesome it is to find a place that understands vegetarian, actively helps with vegetarian choices and does not shy away from some real heat in their food. This place is a gem. Excellent, friendly service. Thai food like Thai food should be - flavorful but light. Best food in Kauai so far. Can not recommend it enough. Very interesting, original, authentic wall decor as well.

First off it has a separate vegetarian menu and a great pineapple curry! The waiter was really friendly and when we were concerned about vegetarian meal preparation he told us that the owner attends the local hindu temple and can actually make anything on the menu vegetarian/vegan style! What a relief on such a meat loving island!

I was introduced to Sukhothai by my close friends who live on island. This is one of their favorite places - and has become one of mine as well. We've been eating here for years. Very delicious sauces, good sized portions (seem have gotten larger this year), reasonable prices, nice selection with fresh ingredients.

Does not look like much from the outside - your typical small "mom and pop" restaurant. Food and service were both good. Food served quickly and hot. Pad Thai was average but both red and yellow curry dishes were very good. Large portions - great value.

  • Klaus P.

Worst Thai food ever. Visiting the island, I had to get my weekly Thai fix, but I would warn any visitor not to expect authentic Thai food. The Pad See Yew was just sweet and tasteless, the fish cakes greasy and too salty. The worst was an eggplant curry that was some absolutely flavorless, cornstarchy goo. You couldn't even tell what was in it - could have been eggplant or just about anything else. Dreadful and overpriced!

  • D L.

I felt so sick after eating here -- accomplishing that with a vegetarian dish and no meat to contend with is a frightening prospect. Just wish there was an actual THAI restaurant on the island and not pseudo-thai!!

This is a great little place. The waitress was really friendly, and her auntie is a sweet lady. The authentic food is awesome!

The madsaman curry here is the best massaman curry I've had. Super delicious, another thai place I'll go to if I revisit kauai

  • Dan P.

It was ok. We had the pad see ew, pad thai, panang curry, and thai beef salad. The pad see ew was a little too sweet. The pad thai was pretty good but nothing special. The panang curry tasted more like massaman curry. In my experience, usually panang curry is more like red curry with coconut milk. This was more brownish and not spicy at all, etc. The salad was pretty good but also too sweet. We were also charged $2.50 / rice but the lady was nice enough to recommend 3 orders for the 4 of us and it was more than enough. It's not a bad place...but it's also not a good place either. 3 stars.

Not fancy, but the food is outstanding. Calamari was clearly homemade rather than frozen. Yellow curry and fried rice were both very good and homemade. Big Plus: The folks here were especially accommodating when it came to my son's nut allergy. They made sure to inform us of nut dishes and prepare our meal completely nut-free. This is awesome for a Thai place to do! My mai tai was super strong for only $3! More of a 4-star place, they get an extra star for effort. I live here, so I'm not comparing it to a fancy Thai place in LA or NYC.

Being a vegetarian when you travel is difficult, so I was delighted to see the wide choice of veggie dishes. We ordered the mixed veg in basil sauce with tofu and the fried tofu in peanut sauce. Both were really yummy, comparable to what we get where we live (Silicon Valley). Portions were large, service was pretty quick and they had brown rice! We left with happy tummies.

Just went in randomly for some food because I was absolutely starved. Ordered the fried tofu which comes with plum sauce and the basil stir fried vegetables and Thai iced teas. Well...the fried tofu was too plain because the plum sauce was not thick enough or strong enough and wouldn't hold onto to the tofu...barely average. The basil stir fried vegetables were pretty good, but nothing above and beyond. Even the Thai iced tea was pretty weak. Overall...I was not impressed at all. I'm glad I have great Thai food in Chicago!

  • Neha G.

One thing I liked about the place was their menu. They had a huge variety of Asian food. Ambiance was about average We ordered Tom Yum soup, basil fried rice and panang curry. Food was about average but portions were large. All in all -average.

    (3)
  • Erik H.

Barely serviceable as food, for sure not thai food. All I have to say is if you have ever been to Thailand or have ever had descent Thai food then this will not even come close to pleasing you. Only reason for two stars was the Tom Yum was edible.

  • Kyle M.

Been here twice and not entirely sure why I went back after the first time. The place was ghost-town empty both times I went, which probably speaks to the quality of the food. This is one of those only-if-you're-desperate kinda Thai places. Bleh.

Apparently most, if not all Thai restaurants on Kauai are owned by the same family. The host here is a twin of the host at House of Noodles. Oddly enough, every meal we had that day was from the same family, including a food truck up in Hanalei. After spending the day cruising around Kauai, we were craving real Thai food. We saw the sign off Kuhio Highway and drove into the parking lot. The restaurant serves Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food. We ordered the eggplant chicken, vegetable panang and tom kha soup. The food was decent considering where we were, but not as good as in San Francisco. The prices hover around the $10 range. If i am ever back on Kauai, I'll try the other family owned restaurant. PS, they all sell shave ice out in front of their restaurants!

We took a chance on this Thai restaurant because we were starving after visiting Waimea Canyon and Wailua Falls. We were leary after reading only two reviews and just a 3 star average. We ordered the Pad Thai which was about 3.5 stars out of 5. However, the Shrimp Tom Yum, and the Coconut Tom Yum soups were amazing because they had both sweet and spicy flavor. You could tell the shrimp was VERY FRESH. We also tried the clear spring rolls and fried rice, both were good. The seafood green curry was excellent because the seafood was so fresh. The nice thing about this restaurant is you can tell it's not as refined as many fancy-schmancy restaurants in big cities, but it has it's own home-style regional flavor. Definitely worth a try.

A little dingy, but that can be okay sometimes. The pad Thai was pretty good and the were good about omitting the peanuts (our son is allergic). Good Thai iced coffee but one wonders at its freshness as they will not serve hot coffee. The pineapple chicken curry was too sweet with too much liquid and tasted of canned pineapple. On an island with so much fresh available, that is disappointing.

We saw their highway sign and stopped by. We ordered the green curry chicken, garlic shrimp stir fry with vegetables. The food was awful. The green curry was watery and the eggplant undercooked. The stir-fry had canned bamboo shoots and canned mushrooms, which made the dish very salty. There were six shrimps in the $14.50 dish. Oh, the chicken in the curry was stringy and fatty. Also be forewarned, they charge $2.50 for a bowl of rice; the dish is a la cart. The portions are smaller than what I am used to in Seattle but I did expect that in Hawaii. Lastly, my girlfriend had ants crawling across her dish. The servers swapped the dish out without so much as an acknowledgment of what we had just seen; this must be pretty ordinary at this location. The only redeeming thing, good Thai Iced Tea for $2.00. Consider this tourist trapped, but only this one time.

I visited this restaurant on 8/18, out of desperation since it seemed that all the other restaurants I wanted to try were closed on Sunday. I ordered the fried rice, pad see ew, and yellow curry. Fried rice was ok, the other two dishes were bad - just had a weird dirty taste to it. The curry didn't have any curry taste, very bland. The pad see ew was undercooked chinese rice noodles with a weird tasting sauce. We originally wanted to order the mango and sticky rice dessert but after tasting how bad the other dishes were, we figured that they would get that wrong too. I'm not a picky eater and I hate wasting food, but I couldn't even finish what we ordered and was not interested in taking anything back with me. My husband couldn't get over how terrible the food was and has rated this the worst restaurant he has ever been too.

Plain and simple... Bad food. Overpriced. Although the ladies were pleasant enough they were indifferent when we complained about the bad tasting food. Best to just avoid this place.

OK so I have to say for Kauai and the limited selection I love this place!!! The woman is so awesome. She knows my order when i walk in the door. Quick service. Always keeps my beverage full. I love the Garlic Chicken Supreme. Steamed veggies in a garlic loaded chicken broth. Slices of chicken breast over the veggies with more minced garlic on top. So yummy. I've also tried the triple spiced crispy fish with roasted cashews. They have brown rice and Black rice!! Awesome!! that's a first. I'm a regular and she always gives me a avocado or free drink. I really don't get the bad reviews. It really baffles me. SO I've had exceptional Thai cuisine in LA. But the service and overall experience doesn't beat this spot. It's not fancy schmancey. Has a home cooked feel and is spotless! Which is most important. It's OK if no one likes it...more for me!! As for the people that complain about price?? Welcome to Kauai. If your gonna complain about money then you have no business going on vacation!

I ate here twice on my stay in Kauai and will eat here again on my next trip. Love the spring rolls - mini rice paper rolls with rice vermicelli that is perfectly seasoned. They are fried and served with a sweet and tart dipping sauce with peanuts in it. The vegetarian pad Thai had lots of veggies, tofu and comes by default with no egg which is always appreciated. We also had the panang curry with tofu which was tasty and full of fresh veggie and peanuts. The company I was with loved the snapper dish that looked like fried pieces of very fresh fish with a tangy/spicy sauce. I want to say there was the word jinata in the name but I didn't order it so it wasn't one for the memory bank. However, they raved and ordered it again. Is the place weird inside? Yes Are the pictures everywhere weird, poorly shot, and if anything pretty unappetizing? Yes. But you're on Kauai and you can't have perfect scenery all the time right? Get it to go and eat it on your lanai or something if that's a hold up.

It's ok. We ordered pad thai (4 stars), beef basil fried rice (3 stars), and yellow chicken curry (2 stars - watery and not much taste). The restaurant was all and clean. The service was friendly and nice. It was good if ur craving Thai, otherwise....

A quaint little spot in a strip mall next to a local grocery. Accidentally walked in to the mexican place next door first - don't make that mistake, because this thai place is grand. The service was fine - island time; and the food was amazing. I had the red curry beef dish and asked for it xxxtra spicey - it came out pretty spicey. My darlin had the shrimp fried rice and said it was the best of it's kind she's ever had.

Yum! Just Thai joints on the east side of the island- here and mema Thai. Sukothai is easier to find and way easier to access parking. Pad Thai and curry is just what you expect- no less. Service and pricing is average for where u are- it is what it is. Take out is my best option.

Not what we expected.... This would be my last last choice.

4 stars for the pad thai. Real tasty, good portion, not too spicy. I would like it spicier. The papaya salad appetizer is very delicious. I recommend that. I also had the coconut curry with squid, which was just, EH... squid tasty funny, almost overcooked and bland. Prices are 10bucks and up for a plate. Good food, but next time, there are lots of restaurants in Kapaa.

I'm not well- versed regarding Thai food, but found this restaurant enjoyable in food and service. Server was very helpful regarding menu and food arrived promptly. The original reviewer of this establishment said it all!

I've been going to this restaurant for years and love the food. Upon entering, I am always greeted by the two ladies who run the restaurant. The atmosphere is clean and attractive. The food is always fresh and fast. Just tonight my husband and I ordered and received our food all within 5 minutes. We love the spring rolls; they are deliciously crispy and come with a tangy vinegar peanut sauce. We also highly recommend the pad thai and vegetable curry.

We had the Coconut Fantasy and a shrimp/calamari dish with jasmine rice. It was very good. Also had Thai beer for the first time. That was good as well, although I'm not a hard core beer drinker. Just so you know it is ala carte / Chinese style.
