Really friendly service and also great coffee in a food truck just off the main highway... one of the best cappuccino's I've had so far in Kauai... :-) Will definitely be coming back again...

Born and raised on Kauai and this place has thee best coffee, but NOT fresh baked goods. My coffee cake muffin still had white flour inside and top was melted. Was told it was freshly baked, but judging by the picture, you decide. One thing to have good service, but another to be lied to. Enjoy!

IF I had money to support a small business, Small Town Coffee would be back in a building. I still love you guys but I miss my 'pig in an apple tree' Food items are now limited to bagels and some baked goods like muffins. This is the place to go if you want a quick stop, great coffee and non pretentious service.
(5)Dallas H.
This coffee shop is awesome. Definitely our favorite place and hidden gem on the island. The coffee is awesome and the Nutty smoothie with hemp milk is mouth watering. I would highly recommend this place. Very very tasty.
(5)Laurie G.
The coffee here is excellent. Service is friendly and pretty quick. As with any place, there are pros and cons. The bad: Since this place moved to the red truck, their food items are limited to homemade bagels and assorted baked goods. Not a great family breakfast option, since they don't have all the food items they did previously. The bagels are delicious though!! The good: this coffee is awesome. We got a plain iced latte and an almond flavored iced latte. Both were excellent! Their tropical smoothie was also very good and refreshing. Delicious cinnamon raisin bagel that is homemade by a local bakery. Come here and support local businesses!!! Set your GPS to "Kojima Store" and look for the red truck at the end of the parking lot. There is outdoor seating on a small patio next to the truck.

We stopped here after spending all morning up on the northside with our eyes set on Small Town before returning to the southside. After having tried a number of other coffee places, Small Town was definitely a to-try place, especially after reading up so much about their cold brew. I love their charming (and hipster) set-up that's off the main highway, and you could easily miss this if you weren't looking for it. The coffee itself was good and I certainly enjoyed how much they gave you for the price! Some of their smoothies also looked delicious, as did some of the baked items that were sitting on the window sill. Definitely make a stop here if you're going from north to south or vice versa!
(4)Josh T.
The go to spot for a good Capp! Their espresso is the best! Never burnt, not overpowering, it is just right They also have a good selection of baked goods they make every morning Their gluten free banana bread and Blueberry muffins are my favorite!
(5)Jon P.
I am a total coffee snob... Small Town Coffee was great. The lady who took my coffee order was nice and personable, and the coffee was outstanding. I ordered a 4-shot 16oz latte, and loved it. I would love to go back and try the pour over. The latte had some acidic, citrus notes, but they were not overpowering. The shots were extracted well and had an excellent caramel color. The milk was also steamed to perfection and had a spectacular microfoam texture. I enjoyed every sip!
(5)Priyanka L.
Nice place.Good for a large group.We were 8.Vegetarian Haven.Great presentation.Made my vacation more special.
(5)jan F.
Sucks, really really rude bad service, nasty woman got our order wrong two ways them screed that she wasn't tipped. Avoid this place
(1)Michelle S.
FYI THIS PLACE MOVED TO A RED BUS IN THE KOJIMA PARKING LOT BY TAMBA. Wanted to try this place out based on yelp reviews. Came on 9/10/14. I do agree it's the best coffee in town. It has that homey taste. If you're near you must try it. I don't think that at their current location they are selling food though. I did not see any food menu at the window. Hopefully when I come back to Kauai they'll find a permanent location by then. I wanted to try their food. It looks so good from all the yelpers pictures.
(5)jenn w.
Great coffee!! Chai is a little weak but great spot and one we returned to during our visit! Friendly staff and yummy treats too!
(4)Cindy M.
Great coffee!
(5)T K.
The ladies here are very personable and will help you find what you're looking for. Coffee an pastries are very good. They also have Gluten Free goodies. My son tried Gluten Free banana bread and pumpkin bread; moist and yummy. I had coffee and chai at different occasions. Chai was okay, too strong on spices for my taste, needs to be toned down a bit. It wasn't too sweet so that's a plus. Check them out yourself!
(5)Michael P.
Got a Yiragacheffea via Clever pour over brewer. Unbelievably good!! Staff was super pleasant both times I went, and the price was actually the cheapest I've ever paid for a pour over (way less than the mainland)
(5)Reed N.
There are a LOT of coffee places in Kapa'a. This should be on top of your list. The owner gets custom roasted Kauai beans that are not over roasted. My iced latte with a touch of vanilla was perfect on a 90F day. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and an attached bookstore round out a nice visit.
(4)Kevin H.
This is the only coffee place I've ever seen that has Bulletproof coffee, what I usually make at home. It was a little slice of home, and much better than the Bulletproof coffee I make at home. Too bad I don't live closer to come and get this every morning. The iced tea and mango juice (the "Andrew" I think?) was just okay. The peanut butter cookies were delicious and crumbly.
(5)Tony S.
Definitely the best coffee on the island. Delicious local bagels along with vegan/gf friendly baked goods. The breves were done perfectly and I appreciated that they have an 8oz option. The pourover yigracheffe is worth many moments of silence to thoroughly soak in the flavors. The staff is friendly, funny and honest.
(5)Dimitry S.
Fantastic coffee! Probably the best I've had on the island. Great roast, tasted like an Ecuador bean to me. We went to this place the most on our two week stay on the island. Everyone in the family really enjoyed the coffee.
(5)Betty N.
**GREAT COFFEE AND BREAKFAST** Cute, hippy, bohemian feel. We often relaxed on their outside patio. MUST ORDERS: *COFFEE Espresso, cappuccino, etc. were all very good and strong Don't expect fancy art work, just good coffee RATING: 5/5 *MORNING HOUSE MADE WAFFLE I love their waffle. I've had both the coconut and the mixed berries! RATING: 4/5 **CARAMEL APPLE CAKE Super moist and delicious! RATING: 5/5 BONUS POINT: *FREE WI-FI Thank you. NOTE: Sometimes good energy, sometimes bitchy energy (depending on server and cashier). I want happy island energy, dammit. I paid for it. I still RECOMMEND.
(4)Megen T.
The first coffee I had on Kauai and the first realization I've been drinking really bad coffee prior to this day. The coffee is so smooth here. Never would've thought to combine maple syrup and cinnamon in a latte. FABULOUS! Definitely will be a first stop on my return to Kauai.
(5)Jane Y.
I had really high hopes for this stand. The coffee was fine but nothing special. The chai latte was nearly flavorless and the bagels were dry and uneventful.
(2)Miranda C.
My favorite little coffee shop! Staff is great. All very friendly. They are the only place east/north Kauai with a dependable daily selection of vegan and gluten free baked goodies. Their strawberry lemonade is great. But if you're looking for a caffeine fix definitely try one of their in-house made flavors! Often you'll find unique flavors you won't find anywhere else.
(5)Diana R.
I absolutely loved this adorable truck! The Hail Mary (house chai, espresso, house choco) was AMAZING, as was the rosemary bagel. Love that they give you the cream cheese to spread on yourself ( ok, that sounds wrong). Only oddity was an iced coffee w blueberries; the berries were whole instead of blended so not sure what the point was! I definitely want to revisit this place!
(4)Angelina C.
Killer latte, chef special bagel with cream cheese and bacon, breakfast in the sunshine with a fiberglass shark and a koi pond to keep you company. We'll be back!
(5)Felicia T.
I'm sorry but read the reviews and thought I would try this place for breakfast. Upon arrival at 9:45am we go to the counter to order after selecting from their menu and find out that they are out of waffles. It's a breakfast item and they are out at 9:45? Then we all changed our order to sandwiches and they came out after thirty minutes. Nothing special about the flavors folks. Pretty disappointing. The place could be a cool venue but needs cleaning and some organization. Shouldn't take 30+ minutes to prepare a scrambled egg on a roll. It wasn't even that busy...skip this one when on the island, not worth the money or more importantly your time.
(2)Maitoka H.
Great lattes and friendly service. Of all the cafes around Kapaa we found only three that we really liked; Small Town Coffee, Java Kai, and Coffee Talk. I found it a bit overpriced, but then and again it's comparable with all the other cafés we went to.
(5)Jennifer L.
Sadly disappointed... Had heard nice things and was looking forward to trying it out. Its cute! Has tons of charm! The coffee was good! But when I walked in with my 3 yr old I just got funny looks from the staff. The guy in front of me in line was nice, but the young man behind the counter and the barista were very cold and "unhappy" seeming. Kinda felt like I was at one of those hipster coffee places back home (orange county, ca) where if you dont know the lingo you're not cool enough. I wanted to order some food but saw no menu anywhere and when I asked about breakfast the guy just pointed to the danishes behind the glass, still emotionless... So I grabed a danish and a small latte and left. At leaving, I walked by the server/counter guy and said "by" with a smile and was ignored :(
(3)Michael C.
It's a food truck... no, wait; it's a coffee truck?! Or is that a bus? Whatever it is, the service was great and the coffee... delicious. Friendly, easy to walk to. Will definitely go back.
(3)Max S.
Really sweet little truck. Wonderful coffee and lovely staff. Would definitely come back.
(5)Mika S.
We've come here for the past 5 days in a row! Love the naughty toddy iced coffee drinks as well as their breakfast bagel sandwiches. Try the El Guapo for something with a little kick(on a jalapeño sausage) There are a ton of locals here so you know it's a good place. Hope to come here on all my upcoming trips.
(5)Darrelle G.
Really cute coffee shop, wish we could have spent more time here. Yummy authentic chai, great service. Thanks!
(5)rail a.
Nice place to grab a killer iced coffee and chill for a bit on a hot day. Bonus points for the funky used bookstore attached.
(5)Jenny B.
They got almond and soy milk plus a good amount of vegan and gluten free goodies to choose from! Love!!! the ambiance very comfortable, you can sit outside, on the porch or inside..
(4)Mona M.
Loved this little joint. Reminds me of hipster SF cafés without the hipsters and space hogging freelancers and with better coffee!
(4)Karin S.
Superior cup of coffee, yummy bagels with choice ingredients. Super laid back and relaxing. Be sure to check out the book store in back/front. Friendly, chill employees.
(5)Alisha A.
We loved coming here every morning and it is why we will likely stay in Kapaa next time we visit. We felt very local, sitting here with our cappuccino and fresh baked muffins. The pastries were excellent, service was fantastic, great vibe and enjoyed the people and pet watching.
(5)Joe S.
Believe the hype folks, this is the best place for coffee on Kauai, hands down. Don't come for the food, or the prices, or the view, or anything else like that...if the primary goal is amazing coffee, this is where you come. Made with skill by killer baristas!
(5)Betsey W.
Best coffee I've had here. But unfortunately the Blueberry muffins were undercooked and the woman acted annoyed when I informed her.
(3)Adam R.
My wife and I came here on our honeymoon after watching the sunrise. We loved this place! The barista/owner was very friendly and made great coffee. A very cute coffee shop to hang out at in the morning. We came here three times in five days. Must go if you like coffee shops and are on the island.
(5)Evan J.
The best iced espresso I have ever had. Water it down if it's too strong and you have a fantastic iced americano. Snap a picture with the industrial art owl out front.
(5)Karl D.
Ugh. Too much a hipster hangout than a place to get food and drink. Their drink menu was severely confused (coffee flavors intermingled with Italian soda syrups), and the cashier suffered from Reality Disconnect. Why, yes, when you have no Perrier, you can't make soda. (Oh, and you should really say "I'm sorry," rather than "We can't do that." Customer Service 101.) There was also a lack of appreciation for timeliness. Yes, we know it's island time, but when you order food to go, that means you're going somewhere. Dig? Doesn't mean we want to wait for 20 minutes. Sandwich portions are too small for normal people; must be the breatharian vibe there. One star awarded for outside seating/koi pond. Save your cash for Java Kai down the street.
(2)Juliane S.
This is one of the only two independently owned coffee shops on Kaua'i (the Art Hemingway cafe is the other one). I'm glad we stopped by this boho, hipster chic joint before we ventured around Wailea. My housemade chai tea was milky and spicy, the 4-shot espresso had my husband buzzing and the in-house baked vegan orange cake was heavenly. This inviting coffee hangout had it's own funky character and the laid back atmosphere makes it a great place to chill both indoors and outdoors on their large wrap around patio. Ooh..and there's free WiFi too.
(5)Ellie F.
All we got was coffee, but I took the barista's suggestion and got a Maple latte. I've never heard of that before, and I really enjoyed it. Kudos to you, Small Town!
(4)Steven N.
Cute little shop. However, place did not open on time and there weren't many food options available.
(4)Melissa E.
Was hoping to check out Dolphin across the street but they were closed. Didn't even know about this place but so glad we found it! Awesome coffee, great local stuff (bought a bag made of tshirts with a rooster on it...LOVE!) and most importantly open early if you need to hit the road for a boat trip!
(4)Kenny P.
cool little hipster place. Has a very mellow Hawaii feel, which if you're a tourist you want to see. Good food, good coffee, a tad pricey but would a did go back.
(4)Emilee J.
this place has such a neat vibe! Our baked goods were wonderful and I loved the quichette with olives and feta! The coffee was great too as I have found on the hawaiian islands and the maple latte was one of the best hot drinks I've ever had. The owner was working behind the counter and chatted us up, super friendly!! Go here instead of commercial spots.
(5)J D.
Solid little coffee house. Great Hawaiian charm as it feels more like a locals vibe than a tourist spot. We stopped twice. Both times the coffee was excellent. My bagel sandwich, the el guapo, was a little better the first time but fine the second time. Not super fast, but why would you be in a hurry...It's Kauai. Relax. Will definitely stop again next time!
(4)Carlos L.
The latte was one of the better ones I tasted while there. Nice ambient, hippie, organic. I think it is worth trying. If you are in the island and want coffee this coffee shop should be one of your stops.
(4)Jackson L.
The 20hr, cold steeped iced coffee is amazing. Less acidity, more caffeine is what we were told with this brewing method!
(5)debbie l.
If you are looking for the best cup of coffee you'll get on Kauai, come here. Along with the best cup of coffee this cute little coffee shop also has breakfast items to go with your great cup of coffee. We only sampled the bagel and waffle but they were both great. There is a great local favor to this place. You can tell the minute you walk in it's where you'd find the best coffee in the neighborhood. You may not spot it at first, so look for the colorful flags at the Kauai Island Craft Fair and pull in. There is a ton of parking on the side or in front. We came as many times as we could during our trip and made it on the last day so we could savor the fabulous coffee and breakfast before our long flight back to reality.
(5)Heather w.
Best coffee shop EVER! Every time I come to Kauai I go every morning and sometimes again in the afternoon :)
(5)Tim K.
yummy!
(5)Subrosa I.
Expensive but delicious organic coffee. Superb customer service. The barista was very friendly and helpful.
(3)Carolyne K.
Place itself is cute, love the low key fun vibe. Coffee was good and the waffle I got was yummy. My mr's bagel sandwich was nothing to rave about. I would have given an extra star to my rating if it wasn't for the mix up between the Batista, cashier and my coffee order. Long story short, Barista gave me a Latte when I ordered an Americano, told the Barista that I didn't order this. Barista turns to cashier and then gets mad at her in front of everyone saying she wrote the order wrong. Cashier defends herself and they go back and forth for a second, finally pulls the order form from the trash cans and points out Barista's mistake. YAY! Cashier wins. Anyways, it was awkward as a customer to stand there and watch this...all I wanted was my Americano not a scene.
(3)Oren R.
Thank goodness we didn't go for one of the chains and decided to Yelp a local coffee shop. This place is adorable! Cool outside seating by a small fountain, coffee shop relaxed music inside, pastries that look delicious and unique drinks. We had a shaken iced coffee with almond flavoring they make by themselves and black tea that tasted lemony.
(5)Kamila G.
Just perfect breakfast in Kapaa
(5)J L.
Fun funky local shop with quick and friendly service serving an amazing espresso. Quality and friendliness of baristas sets this place apart. Also got a delicious big meanie sandwich. It warrants a return trip everytime we visit Kauai!
(5)Morgan G.
Ice tea is delicious! Atmosphere is lovely! Besides java Kai, it's the only other coffee shop ill get my buzz on at:))
(4)Tanya L.
I found this place in yelp and one of the reviews mentioned a maple latte. I'm not a huge fan of flavored lattes but I trust my fellow yelpers. Well, the maple latte was just right- not too sweet and not bitter. I asked the barista do make it as she would for herself and it was awesome. I haven't had coffee this great since Blue Bottle in frisco. Well this place is much better because it's relaxed and family oriented. There were many little curios to look at and funny posters. They also have Kauai Kombucha and they serve lunch. My German friend had the reg coffee and she said it was one of the best cups she's had. The place had plenty of seating inside and out, they have outlets for laptops and I think that's very generous considering this is an island. I'm excited to wake up tomorrow at 6 so I can stop by and get a latte. The foam was thick and foamy- not airy like at the fast food coffee joints. They have smoothies, chai, and teas. They have a cute outside area with two ponds and a large living room type set up where some local guys were chatting it up. My advice is, tell the barista what you like and let them do the magic. Don't approach this place like a Starbucks with a laundry list of particulars for your java. You caffeine fix is in good hands!
(5)Richard R.
First trip to the island and I wanted a good coffee/breakfast spot before a kayaking trip. Breakfast was good but not out of this world, but the iced mocha was the best I had on the island, and I drank at least one each day from different spots in Kauai. Not too sweet but very flavorful. I'd go back just for that.
(4)Jennifer O.
Stopped here on my Coffee Tour of Kauai. This was definitely my second favorite coffee on the Island. The thing that makes this shop is the excellent atmosphere. The shop is very comfortable and cute. It does have a small town feel. The woman who was behind the counter was extremely friendly and helpful. They had the most delicious scone...still warm from the oven (yes they do make them in house...woohoo!). The latte was good, although not the best I have ever had. Despite this, I would love to have a place like this in Phoenix to hang out in. It reminded me of cafes in Seattle. This had the best atmosphere of all the shops I visited.
(4)Kristyn G.
Amazing coffee, great people and staff. Great banana chocolate chip and coconut waffles. We'll definitely be back the next time we visit Kauai! Thank you for a great americano.
(5)Nicky P.
The best vanilla iced latte I had while on Kaua'i! Very friendly service, although not especially speedy. I had bagels here a couple mornings as well and all were delicious. Free WiFi. I would definitely go back if I could!
(5)Jennifer D.
Great place to hang out and to kills sometimes! If I lived here I would be here everyday! I miss this place! The coffee isn't to bad either!
(5)Cinzia B.
Small Town is awesome. Everyone that works there is incredibly nice and Deb always makes me the coolest drinks.
(5)Malena K.
I'm not a coffee connoisseur, but my bf is and he thinks the coffee isn't great, but on a good note the scones are excellent. The berry scone is broke da mouth delicious.
(3)Austin W.
I love the ambience of this place, its so trendy and hipster. It makes me feel like this is the place I should go to often. The design of the place, the artwork. Especially having a book store and Friday Mic nights where people perform their talents is a great way in bringing people to experience how unique the cafe is. The staff are warm and welcoming, I like how most of their desserts and bakery are vegan! I got the banana vegan bread, and it was amazing! However I dont care too much about their coffee and ice chai. And it is a lil pricey, but I would defiantly recommend this place to visitors to Kauai. It will show them how cool Kauai can be! ;)
(4)Julia A.
cute little place to grab coffee while checking out the Flea market.
(4)Alessandra G.
I went there around noon and unfortunately I didn't have the chance to try the house made waffles cause they stop serving them after 11.00 am. I got an iced chai and a "that'll do it pig" with ham. The bagel was really good. Can't say the same about the chai.
(3)Audrey C.
Quaint and quirky: I was visiting Kapa'a for the day and came across this little coffee shop. I do not drink coffee anymore, but this place serves loose leaf tea in ceramic cups, a sure sign of class. Yet, this place is cozy and casual. It is nestled in the Kapa'a crafts fair grounds behind the flags, and I almost missed it. I was so glad to have found this little oasis of calm and comfort. I tried a green tea with turkey sandwich combo and was not disappointed. The menu is not extensive, but the food is good. The ambiance is filled with local art and recycled chairs. I saw people chatting, but I just savored my meal and enjoyed the American Standards playing overhead. Small Town has a computer with printer unit for those so inclined to go online, for a small price. I highly recommend a stop at this coffee house, for a hot or cold beverage, for a quick bite to eat, or for just a little breather after a long day of touring.
(4)Lisa K.
PERFECT n/f vanilla latte...the berry scone was Delicious!...loved the owl sculpture...hoot-hoot! I read about Small Town Coffee in Sunset and was SO glad that I was able to stop by twice while on the island.
(5)Jim M.
These folks are all criminally insane, but damn, they know how to make a good cup of coffee. I first wrote this review in 2011 and am now editing it in 2015. I am all the more sure of both their collective insanity and their remarkable powers in creating the perfect cup of coffee. The owner of the establishment even sings me a custom theme song, just for me, when I arrive. I have been a frequent customer over the years.
(5)Anthony A.
Excellent coffee shop in Kapaa ! Friendly people, good coffee, and a great house that fits with its surroundings. Thank goodness there is no chain coffee shop in sight !
(5)Danijel S.
Kapaa knows it's coffee! No ice blended bullcrap here. Espresso is mindblowing. Rich, tasty, delicious. Oh, food can be found here too, however, why spoil your espresso with it? Except if you get another one after you're done eating...
(5)John F.
I'm going to go against my first intention which is to bring out my single experience and rate it accordingly and just highlight what I imagine is normal for Small Town Coffee. I strolled by on two different occasions while in Kapaa and found a herd of angry hippies kind of stopping out front of the joint - fine, whatever. I went inside and was pleasantly surprised how gritty and comfy a feel the place had. It's like I teleported back to Philly and found a great new spot. Strange newspaper lacquered floors, cool paint job on the walls, neat wooden tables, local goods, It was a seriously awesome joint in a non-serious town. My coffee was very good and the server was super friendly. I wanted to like it. ---Read on for the isolated incident--- So when we got in there, a heated argument just broke out. Some guy was upset and trying to get his point across with the manager (I think) and since the manager was basically telling him to get out, the guy just kept retorting with "On what grounds..." "Your argument is illogical, how can you just come to that conclusion..." and other "I'm smarter than you" hippy comebacks. Frankly, I'd be so embarassed for being kicked out that I'd run with my head tucked in shame but this crap kept going, more people got involved... I thought I was back in Philly and just wanted nothing to do with it. It was hard to focus on just taking my coffee, getting milk and sugar and ignoring the asshole. Then, as I finished stirring, I hear it's about a girl that works there and he is fighting with the manager about some sort of "misinterpretation." Figures, but by that point, I was ready to take my coffee the hell out of there. I returned to Java Kai the next day instead.
(4)Amy K.
OVERALL:4.6 FOOD:4.5 SERVICE:4.5 AMBIANCE:5 VALUE:4.5 New location a few blocks north of the old one. Tucked behind the vendors with a sweet view of the luscious green mountains. Coffee is strong, smooth, and deelish (try the toddy!), banana bread is insanely moist w/a touch of island tropics...the only banana bread I've ever felt good about paying for. Great music, tons of indoor & outdoor seating, yummy bagel creations, local artwork & board games galore--replaces Java Kai as my goto perk-me-up in Kapaa!
(5)Claudia P.
Had a great latte here along with a bagel with green apple - delicious! Staff was nice but service was slow even though they weren't busy, had to go back inside for a coffee they forgot to make for my hubby (hence the 3 stars instead of 4). Sat in a cute little courtyard area to enjoy the sun.
(3)David W.
If it wasn't for yelp we probably would have never noticed this place. We loved the vibe here. My maple cinnamon latte was really tasty and our baristas were really cool and helpful. Highly recommended. This may turn into your morning hang out during your stay!
(5)Rachel S.
Eh. This place is a cool vibe but nothing to write home about. Breakfast sandwiches are good but pricey. Coffee isn't anything spectacular. Really the reason to come to this place is the great vibe, friendly staff, and eccentric ambiance. Food and Coffee, I'd recommend elsewhere.
(3)Cee A.
I mostly get the hemp mochas. Most of the time they are perfect, toe-tingling - on the rare off days I'm left trying to sort out why it tastes bland. Twice I've ordered a mocha and had them give me a latte. No biggie. It's just that on the second occasion, when I told the barista, she actually tried to convince me that I'd asked for a latte, instead of apologizing and offering to make another drink. I don't drink lattes; never order lattes. Had to double check with my boyfriend - perhaps this was the first sign of Alzheimer's - but no, I'd indeed ordered a mocha. I kept the latte but having worked in stores a good chunk of my childhood I prefer the "customer is always right" motto. By the way, as with Java Kai down the street (and many coffee shops), they cook their eggs in the microwave. So if you're okay with your proteins mutated into toxins.... They do have other food options (tho we're oft there before it opens) but I hear it's good. A few other points: I like that they offer hemp milk. They've got internet (& some computers). There's even a book store connected. They also make their own Jin and have some cool local product. Their newish location has a sweet, mellow vibe. Think they have some community meet-ups there - check the calendar. To top it all off, they just birthed a brand spanking fancy new espresso machine. In conclusion: your chances of getting the best espresso on the island here is pretty high.
(5)Ryan T.
Great coffee, delicious eats. Stopped in for breakfast on the road. The latte was sublime and the wide array of breakfast bagel sandwiches was very impressive. We had the El Guapo, a mexican-inspired ham, egg, and cheese delight. Can't recommend this enough.
(5)Jaime T.
i was driving around the island with a friend and stumbled upon this cafe. I loved it. Has free WiFi, has a couple of computers w internet connection and a printer. Good service w friendly baristas & cooks. Really good food. I tried: Fritha's Breakfast_ Tomato, crushed peppers, Humus sprinkled w Olive oil on a wheat bagel. We found Nemo_ Creme Cheese, salmon on a bagel
(5)Jesse D.
I had a great ginger spiced chai ice tea here and on the next visit vanilla black tea...delicious! This spot is so well decorated and designed. This is the first cafe I have visited on Kauai with a funky, Bay Area/Seattle vibe. Loved the lamp shades made out of book pages and enjoyed visiting their little bookstore. The outside seating with the art was beautiful. From the coffee bar I could see the summit of Waialeale on the left and the ocean on the right. Beautiful! Will definitely be back for the writing class on Thursdays and the open mic on Friday.
(5)Jeffrey B.
Get your granola fix here! Make sure you try the cold toddy - because it is some of the best coffee I've ever had. Smooth and delicious!
(4)Michelle T.
Only place that I wasn't impressed with in Kauai. First off it's pretty expensive, $13 for 2 small coffee's and one bagel sandwich. Very bohemian, hippie feel which is fine except that they took the extra step and added some drunk, homeless people in the mix hanging out, and I swear everything I touched in there was dirty and sticky. Sloooowest service ever, we waited 15 min. to get our bagel sandwich, and it wasn't complicated. Bagel, egg, cheese, and bacon, not that hard. Honestly the girl making the sandwich I'm convinced was under the influence of something. We ordered our sandwhich to go and she walks out 5 min. later with a bagel plain on a plate. I told her we ordered a sandwich and it was to go. She just walked away. Then she went back to the counter and for about 5 min. stood there talking to the homeless guy, she knew I was watching her to. Finally 10 min later she walks out with a brown bag and wanders around the tiny place looking lost. I had to walk over and tell her it was mine. Mind you I hadn't moved since the first time she came over. After all that the sandwich was alright but they are very heavy handed on the black pepper, I wouldn't be suprised if she accidentally spilled the whole shaker in the eggs. Not someplace that I would return to but my bf and I got a good laugh out of it.

Stopped in for a cafe au lait after lunch at Kay's Plate Lunch. Great coffee!! Second-best coffee I had on Kauai. Cute cafe, I liked their eco-friendly bottle/bag resale section.

Very friendly staff. Breakfast bagel sandwiches are pricy but UNREAL delicious - several meat and veggie friendly options to choose from. Lovely outdoor seating area begs you stay for awhile, read the paper, refill your coffee, tackle the crossword, chat up the other folks at nearby tables. I could spend hours here.

Fan-freaking-tastic!! A little bit of San Francisco on Kuhio hwy... These baristas know their stuff and produce a mighty fine shot of espresso using Barefoot Roasters which we know and love, I would venture to say they make a better drink than Barefoot themselves! Bonus points for using organic milk. If you are a serious coffee drinker, forget Java Kai or Kilauea Market and Bakery - this is the place for you. Easy to miss, make sure you don't miss it. I only wish there was something this good in San Diego!

Ordered their iced tea and turkey sandwich. Met with bland tasting tea, something concocted out of a store bought mix. The sandwich was hard and tasteless, I'm afraid without the kick of their pesto (which was the only good tasting ingredient) the sandwich would have been thrown in the trash.

I didn't expect to find good espresso on Kauai, but I found it here. The shop recently purchased a Simonelli espresso machine and serves what I assume to be locally beans. Either way, they do a good job. I had a cappuccino and some breakfast bagel type of sandwich. Both were great. Another thing to comment is the friendly staff. Real nice people.

The espresso here is amazing. This is the only place I'm aware of on Kauai (and I've tried many places) that makes a true Italian espresso. The staff is also very friendly. I'm a regular to Kauai and I found this place on my last trip. It will now be a daily spot for me in the future.

I'll admit it: i have a coffee problem. The coffee is not the problem. It's the anxiety i feel every morning when i get up and ask, will i get enough coffee today? Will it be delicious? I come to Kauai once a year. I will never miss this coffee on a trip again. It alays my fears. It is deeply caffeinated and delicious. The only reason i shorted them a star? Not enough savory snacks. I got there at 2:30pm and a bagel could no longer be had. Bummer. But the coffee pretty much makes up for it.

This place has a great location with plentiful outdoor seating. Stellar coffee and great breakfast choices for a coffee shop. I recommend this place to locals and tourists alike.

Have only tried the bagel with bacon, apple, and cheddar, but that was so-so: alas! Still, the surroundings are great and the staff friendly: worth another try. Two more trips and I've found the lattes are VERY good, as are the berry scones. Add a half-star for both! After multiple visits, I'm changing my original four stars to five. This place is great.

My daughter thought the food was good, but the service was terrible. She waited a half hour for her order.

This place won my contest for best chai in the islands. It's made by a local fellow for this cafe, delicately spiced and mildly sweet. We saw the lady who serves Blue Bottle Coffee here on her day off, so that's a good sign. They also have an excellent tea selection. The ambiance is old school hippie hang out and it's across the street from the beach. Though it closes at 1PM, I think they're open in the evenings occasionally for a local produce dinner.

We stumbled upon Small Town Coffee while exploring neighborhoods around Kauai. They have incredible coffee and a lot of different options; we tried an iced coffee drink with homemade pumpkin syrup, and it was the pumpkin flavored coffee we've tasted. They also had delicious pastries, including vegan and gluten-free options, which can be harder to find in Kauai. Prices were very reasonable, and the ambience was eclectic and relaxing. We enjoyed it so much we plan on going back before heading home!

Hard to find at first. Tucked in off the main road surrounded by fair stores. I loved the building, the grass, the pond, but everything else fell a little flat. They didn't have any local beans, the French Drip I had was super bitter, and they don't appear to carry much in the treat section. I did like the spot, but Java Kai being so close is just too tempting for me.

Pretty chai tea...never would have thought of honey being used decoratively on the top. Though not very tasty... :(. Bit watery. Flies were in the case with the pastries. Location was good, service was good. Bathroom on site. Cool setup and tadpole pond outside and used book store right off cafe. Outdoor seating. Wouldn't rule it out as a good place to stop for a drink. Close pricing ranges with Starbucks.

Tourists may come for the laid-back bohemian feel or the wi-fi, but they'll be returning for the expresso drinks, hand crafted -like my fantastic mocha latte with swirled foam finish-which are cheerfully rendered by baristas that aim to please. I also tried the blueberry scone, which was generous sized and not dry at all and more chewy than biscuity. While we waited for drinks, we strolled into the microscopic book store off the back end of the shop and found a couple cool paperback books (used, $0.50 ea.) to grab as well. You won't regret stopping here!

Whether you live in Kaua'i or just visiting don't go to Starbucks and go to one of the many local coffee shops. This place is a hippie like coffee shop. The staff knows how to make a great cup of joe and are great at recommending drinks and they are very friendly. I came here twice while visiting. Both times I got the naughty toddy with vanilla which is what was recommended to me. I also got the El Guapo bagel breakfast sandwich which was YUMMY. The bagel was soft and fresh. I wondered if they make the bagels themselves. I can tell they made the salsa themselves as it was very much fresh. I am glad the guy recommended it because I truly enjoyed it. I loved the small town bohemian atmosphere. A great place to people watch. Now some people might think this place might be expensive but it is no different then going to Starbucks, Coffee Bean or any other corporate ran coffee shop. So quit the complaining and support a local business get to know the locals and order a Vanilla Naughty Toddy with a El Guapo Sandwich. You well spend the same amount whether you go here or Starbucks.

I ordered a cappuccino. The best I have ever had. It really was delicious. I had my 3 year old daughter with me and the lady that made the delicuos cappuccino made a little bear face with the steamed milk at the top. It was very cute. If I lived here I would come here everyday. Really great coffee and great service. Nice people. Get your coffee here!!!
(5)Rebecca A.
Delicious coffee. Delicious bagel sandwiches. The only place I went to more than once (I think I went there 4 times in one week). So good!

UPDATE: Small Town Coffee will moving by August 31st 2011. Just down the road north a little ways, right across from Otsuka's furniture store in the Kauai Products Fair, in the cute red, japanese style house. Hours will be longer, menu will expand, night events will occur! Come and see us!
(5)P K.
Is Small Town Coffee closed permanently or just getting a facelift? We always stop by for the excellent coffee when we are in Kauai and noticed a lot of construction going on.

Good eats Great coffee Free wifi My fave menu item: iced latte!

Let's start off with the fact that I like good coffee and espresso. Starbucks is, meh.... I stumbled across this little shop while on vacation and was staying a few blocks away, after Yelping for coffee. This place is great, this is a true Coffee Cafe. The baristas here actually know how to make espresso drinks. They are not using automated, push button, self cleaning/loading machines. They made fantastic Cappuccinos for me. The foam was nice and thick with tight bubbles. They even throw down some foam art to add that finishing touch. The coffee / espresso was delicious. It looked like they were using Barefoot Coffee while I was there, which is funny because the company is local to me. I actually buy their beans for my own use. They have a good selection of pastries and make tasty bagel / breakfast sandwiches. I wish this place was in my neighborhood. It would be my regular coffee shop it if was. One word of caution though, in typical island tradition, the service can be on the slow side for those use to the typical in and out type of shops. Not a knock in any way. Just don't expect to run in and out for a quick cup.

This place is really casual, good vibe, friendly staff, very appropriate for a stop for coffee in Kauai. Good coffee and sandwiches. We went there repeatedly during our 2wk stay.
(4)Baby C.
I'm no longer a fan. I used to come here often for their live music nights etc but it seems like they are always closed. I'm surprised they have survived this long. I like java Kai better and I don't like them
(2)Napoleon R.
Good soy latte. Undrinkable iced coffee. Not great bagels. Really nice (and cute) staff.
(3)Andrea L.
It's local. Local, local, local. That means they could be a little dubious about tourists, but I was never treated rudely, nor did I even sense that they were treating me much differently than everyone else other than the personal greetings by name. And, after all, isn't that one of the perks of being a regular?? FANTASTIC espresso - they know how to pull a shot, and that's where most of my vote goes. But for $3 for a single shot (same as a double since they pull doubles all the time regardless), that's a bit steep.
(4)Nataly L.
Such personality and pizzazz! Amazing loose leaf teas & coffees! Great food too :-)
(5)steve b.
Started off with a decent mocha and ordered breakfast. However, the barista who had just served up our morning beverages then decided it was time to LOUDLY discuss (of all things at a restaurant) her yeast infection! She went on and on about this with her coworkers as we tried to eat. Going into such graphic detail, it was truly unbelievable. Gross.

Great coffee nice ambiance, free wifi, great hangout
(5)Alisha F.
Cute place across from beach for snack / breakfast / coffee / tea. Atmosphere is fun and eclectic, food was delicious. Lox - tasty and nicely presented. Wi-fi and computer w. Internet avail. Some outdoor seating on the road. Only drawback is tables could have been wiped down and some of the seating could use a little upgrade. Parking not immediately available, but plenty in the vicinity. I would go back for sure.

we stayed on Kauai in 2008 and drove from Princeville down to Kapaa every day just to get espresso from this coffeeshop. We're going to vacation on Kauai again in April this year and we're staying in Kapaa this time just so we can be in walking distance of Small Town Coffee. (We're hoping that it's still there after 2 years! Hopefully the fact that there are recent reviews on Yelp means yes!)
(5)Leah G.
This a place I would frequent if I lived in Kauai. Organic coffee, organic milk, bio plastic cups, etc. Nice staff, good bagels, catchy tunes, ambiance.
(5)Jenny W.
Yes, I absolutely agree-there's quite a homey presence here. Sometimes it can get a little bit too much. The owner's kids are really cute, but when you're not feeling like being around kids, go somewhere else. Of the few times I've used the free wi-fi here, there was always a bunch of kids running around (the wooden floor, I might add). Upping the volume of my headset did nothing. There are actually a few tables reserved just for the kids, making it a wee bit tricky to find space around the morning-mid-afternoon time. The food menu is simple and selection slim-the prices a little bit on the uppity side for the fare. I was behind a lady in line when she was surprised to find that they were going to charge her for a (per) little cube of butter for her bagel. She asked why it didn't come with the bagel-the owner's response was because the butter wasn't free for them either. With that logic, they might soon be charging us for the utensils and bowls that come with our meals. Overall, this place is homey, the people friendly, the food decent. It's usually quite busy with activity, so if you need a place to use the internet quickly and grab a bite, this is your place in Kapa'a.

A welcome cafe for a coffee obsessed Seattlite. They have cold brew, which is rare for even big cities and a nice atmosphere too.
(5)David M.
I'm actually not a coffee drinker at all. But I did come here and have some organic rooibos which I absolutely love. I always enjoy the atmosphere of cafes and this one had free wifi and friendly service. I was in Kauai with my girlfriend and we made a point to stop in here every morning for an hour or two before continuing our day. I also had a blueberry bagel... YES! My girlfriend got the cinnamon maple latte which she adored. Fantastic place to come and relax and then chill out at Kealia Beach.
(5)Serina T.
This is definitely a small town coffee shop. Great bonus is that they have free wifi. They also have 2 computers with internet access. They charge $1 for 10 minutes and 25 cents/page to print. This is where I came to feed my internet addiction. Even though I was on vacation I still wanted to feel connected to the world. They have a little kids corner with toys for parents to keep their children occupied while they have a cup of coffee and peruse the newspaper. I heard that the open mic night on Thursdays was pretty fun.

Food poisoning. Better to go anywhere else.

Great, cute little coffee shop, delicious unique egg sandwiches on the menu. A touch expensive, but definitely a great place for breakfast.
(5)Frank Y.
This place serves great coffee and food! The coffee and espresso here are really good from a serious coffee snob here(me!). They are NOT using Kauai's coffee! The lady there told me they are using good Guatamela coffee. Their breakfast sandwiches are pretty tasty and have really funny names.
(5)Colie J.
Ok mocha but a small is $4.25 and it isn't sweet. I prefer blended ice drinks, but they have none on the menu. Whipped creme isn't standard on a latte (is this normal for independents?). They do have free wifi if you are in need.
(2)Dead M.
Still awesome coffee! I ordered a 16oz Americano and they asked if I wanted 2 or 4 shots. Correct. 4 please it shouldn't taste like drip coffee. The bagels are awesome. Free WiFi and they have computers you can use for $1 per 10 minutes and $0.25 per page printed. It is mostly locals.
(5)Valerie P.
this was by far the best coffee we've had in a long time. hubby and i each ordered a cappuccino and a veggie-nator bagel/sandwich thing. both exceeded our expectations. the espresso shot was pulled and timed to perfection and the foam was thick and smooth. the little design on top even made it taste better. the veggie-nator was the perfect healthy breakfast we were craving - loaded with veggies and some sort of pickled beet which added an amazing peppery crunch. service was ok, not friendly, but not rude which is why i only gave this place 4 stars (i'm a HUGE advocate of excellent customer service). i'd say it was typical service for kapa'a from our weekend experience.
(4)Erik S.
OK first off, Starbucks and this place should never be mentioned in the same sentence. This place is great. I loved it. Easily the best espresso place on the island. The people are all very nice, the quality of the espresso is outstanding. The free Wifi is awesome and if you don't have your own computer they've got a couple that you can use for a very reasonable rate. I went here 5 times in 5 days. I loved this place.
(5)Craig I.
Small 80's music playin', bohemian type coffee joint. A mug of coffee...$1.50...internet connection and classic 80's music. I actually prefer this place over starbucks. oh yeah and did I mention, internet connect is FREE!
(3)Kelly S.
liked the decoupage floor and ambience. coffee was good, love that it's organic. don't love the dirty looks from clientele, and when in line, the barista helped those in line after us, since they are regulars. very very long wait for a mocha. The locals were offered whipped cream on their bevarage, we were not. The barista was nice enough, but very blatant about treating tourists as second-class customers. We tipped regardless since she was nice enough... it's not like we were hanging out in puka shell necklaces with fanny packs and zip-off pants. just wanted get a cup of joe on the way to surf. I'm sure if I lived there I would give it five stars. but as a tourist, not so much.

best coffee i have ever had.
(5)Kristi H.
GREAT coffee! Plus they make beautiful artwork on top. Really good food too. Love the local feel of this place; really fun to hang out inside and interact with people who actually live on the island.

very cool place. in fact, i'm sitting here enjoying their free wi fi at this very moment! they're playing "rat race" widescreen, projected on a sheet they have hanging over the window. just noticed tuesday is movie night. wed is jazz night and thursdays is open mic night. it has a great homey feel. had some herbal tea, but will definitely be back for the expresso.
