Excellent Chinese food! Cold Ginger chicken was tender and moist with lots of ginger and green onions. The mandarin spicy eggplant with pork was cooked just right.. The eggplant was firm and the sauce was very tasty. The people were friendly and didn't rush us even though we got there 30 minutes before closing!

Stopped here for lunch after a morning at Kailua Beach. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken lunch special, which included steamed rice and 2 crispy wontons for $6.75. My daughter ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice, and my wife ordered a chicken dish, which I don't recall. The shrimp in the shrimp fried rice was the frozen baby shrimp you'd buy in your local grocery store. Not a big deal, but they weren't seasoned at call and they were barely room temperature. My wife complained that her dish had very little flavor, while my Kung Pao Chicken was fairly good. On the positive side, service was quick and the dining room was clean and comfortable.

I must have been so hungry during my last visits. Love eating protein! This sucks, how do they get a "pass" and have a critter in each dish I freakin order? Never again. Maybe some things in Kailua need to be replaced.

I'm a fan of Yen Yen because the food is good and the owner manager is excellent. We had some issues with the food and table. He came by personally to correct the problem and apologize. When we tried to pay for the bill he said it was complimentary. We are regulars and the food and service is usually fine. The issue we had was a one time occurrence and he made sure we knew it wasn't acceptable, corrected it and apologized. Awesome. We will continue to be loyal customers

If you live and/or grew up on the Windward side, Yen Yen is the staple go-to Chinese restaurant for parties, New Year's Eve and just a quick dinner after work or on the weekend. The service is quick. The food is plentiful. The price affordable. The ambience, eh, just a regular Chinese restaurant, not too fancy...simple, clean, decent. Like it!

Went for celebratory family dinner. The Peking duck was great, as was the fish with ginger/scallion and stuffed eggplant. Next time we'll ask for the ma po tofu to be a little spicier.

I order take out here once a week, maybe every other week. Their minute chicken cake noodle is great! Beef broccoli, honey walnut shrimp, spicy pork eggplant. All solid. There aren't that many options for reasonable value togo dinner places in Kailua and this is one of my fave's. I phone order and yeah they're busy and not the smiley type but I really don't care when I'm doing take out. Get me my food pronto and they get that done. If you want to drive 30-45 minutes out of Kailua for Chinese you're crazy - this place is great :)

I was in the mood for Shar siu and noodles so checked this place out. I was really disappointing; the noodles were dry and doused in soy sauce, and the Shar siu (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong) was mostly fatty and just not how I'm used to.. I really hope they step it up as it's one of the few Chinese restaurants in Kailua, but until then I'll be making the drive to Kaneohe..

Just like said in other posts the food was bland and the service was unkind. I paid in cash and the waitress placed my change on the other counter. Not a smile was cracked. Next time Ill drive the 30 min and hit up salt lake Chinese .

Reading all of the reviews, I was definitely thinking we would have had a better dining experience. In our instance, the server was super polite and super attentive. Never once did we have grumpy or unkind service. Our water glasses were never empty, and we do drink a lot of water. Props to them on that. As for the food...well, no bueno. Definitely below average Chinese. We went with the Honey Walnut Shrimp that has been raved about and it was lackluster at best, definitely lacked flavor. Sadly, the walnuts were the best part. Next, Roast Duck. Average...nothing special at all. Then, Orange Chicken...kids would barely touch it. The sauce just wasn't all that at all. We left a half of a platter, and opted to not take it home. The noodle dish we got was pretty decent (can't recall which one) and definitely a hit. Crispy gau gee was, well, pretty standard. The best part of the meal was that they had the best spicy mustard, not da watered-down kine you get at a lot of places. The mustard and the amazing service were 100% on point. Sadly, both of those just don't make up for low-quality grinds. We'll definitely give it another shot based on the service alone. If nothing changes food-wise, we be out!!!!

The owner and staff are really great! So inexpensive as well for the amount we receive everytime. Best Chinese restaurant on the windward side for sure

Probably the best Chinese food in Kailua since four star closed. We like their wor gau gee mein. But tonight we ordered the Peking duck, egg drop soup, ginger chicken, pork with sweet sour cabbage, beef with black mushroom, egg fu yong, spicy eggplant, honey walnut shrimp, and the house noodles. The honey walnut shrimp was probably the best of all the dishes (we'd never tried it but all the reviews made me order it). The Peking duck was a close second. We also had the stuffed tofu with black bean but it used the firmer tofu and we prefer the soft but it was still tasty. A couple of the other dishes were less flavorful than usual but I would still say they offer the best Chinese food in Kailua. The restaurant was clean as were all of the utensils and cups. Service was prompt and the food was hot. None of the staff made us feel rushed and kept the hot tea and ice water coming. If you don't feel like driving to your favorite place in town Yen Yen will fill your Chinese craving.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would, the lady working and the guy which I think was the owner was rude and annoying. I came in to order Saimen, and ask for the menu, while looking at the menu the lady was just standing and staring at me to hurry up and order. Like shesh be patient. The guy was so rude when I ask to get my Saimen separated, he was to busy counting his money. Never coming back ever again, the Saimen place across of Taco Bell in Kailua town is 100% better and there so nice.

My wife and I ordered a lunch special that you can get any time of the day. The service was very unfriendly, as if they don't like Americans. Wegot our food quickly, but the pork was HORRIBLE. It was too old to be served. There were some pieces that were just cut up fat. The workers there glared at us, as if they couldn't wait for us to leave. We were not rude with them in any way, and we were nicely dressed. They're restroom was disgusting and not clean. We will never go back there again.

A couple friends recommended this place, we finally went for take-out and it was really good! It's not fancy but it's in the shopping center in Kailua with all the good mom and pop eateries. We ordered king pao beef, hot and sour soup and combo seafood stir fry. The flavorings/ seasonings were good so this will definitely be our go-to for Chinese.

Ordered the Wo Won Ton no Mien, Oyster Chicken Cake Noodle, Beef Stew Noodle. Was ok average. The only thing was the attitude of the lady server and the owner. Both were having an off day. Nevertheless, I'm writing this review and won't go there again.

The best value for plate lunch specials within the Enchanted Lake shopping center. There is a great selection of offerings for lunch, and the chicken with pepper and onions is my favorite for under $6 with rice. Their dinner and entree specials are a little more expensive, but a better value that most Chinese restaurants: Chicken with asparagus at $9, beef with bitter melon, and chicken with cake noodles. This also have a bar, serving bottle beer and wines.

From what I hear the new management is an improvement. When we went the food was reasonable & tasty. I don't think its as tasty as Happy Days in Kaimuki but not bad. Their lunch special is a pretty good deal. There is plenty of parking.

The one star is being generous. I have eaten here a couple of times in desperation since there aren't many other Chinese restaurants close by and the beef chow fun is actually kind of okay. I recently called for a take out order and was met with sarcasm, rude-ness and overall bad customer service. I asked for assistance with an item that I needed for a preschool pot luck and was responded with "We don't do that" and I asked why not and they said "Because I don't want to". Now I am a reasonable person, if there was a reason like it would compromise the taste or appearance of the food that would be totally understandable. I was asking for help as a busy Mom to get things ready for a kid friendly function and was not totally surprised that they were unwilling to help, but surprised at how rude they were. Since the food is subpar at best I decided to go to my staple Asia Manoa where they are helpful, customer service oriented and the food actually tastes good. If you don't mind overpriced and bad tasting food to go with a side of bad attitude go here. Otherwise you are probably better eating anywhere else.

Food was ok. We liked the family style serving. It was disappointing to see the dishes overrun with vegetables and little meat. But I guess this is how they keep prices low. Been once...maybe we will go again at our next chinese craving...not sure yet.

Good food, bad service waitress: "no mo tea , a/c broken" throw menu on table. Me: get up and tell the family " We go now". Shame on that grumpy lady.

There is no decent Chinese food in Portland, OR--my current city of residence. Yes, Portland is a famous foodie paradise, but I have yet to find a decent Chinese restaurant in Portland proper. Thus, one of my missions during our vacation on Oahu was to get some good Chinese food before our return to Stumptown. Yen Yen had some good Yelp reviews, but my wife's uncle and auntie eat there all the time and that's a good enough recommendation for me. We went for lunch. There was no one in the place except us and a guy waiting for a take out order. The waitress was appropriately grumpy. (I've found that Chinese restaurants with grumpy waitresses are usually the best.) We ordered the Walnut Shrimp, Tofu with Vegetables and the Roast Duck. Appetizers were won tons and veggie egg rolls. Yes! The food was perfect. Not great by any stretch of the imagination, but tasty, Chinese American fare that absolutely hit the proverbial spot. Man, I wish we had a place like Yen Yen in my neighborhood. Our trashcan (or rather the blue recycling barrel) would be filled with empty Chinese take out boxes all the time. Good stuff. I recommend.

Taste is not authentic. That's fine. But food quality is poor. Clams have a strong chemical smell.

We ordered chicken oyster pan fried (a.k.a. pancake) noodles for take out (seven orders = one large party sized pan - regular price $45?). The online menu pricing ($38) seems to be outdated, which the owner impatiently explained to my wife when we called in a few days after our first order. Pretty funny, except when we called back a third time, the woman explained to us that even though we had ordered, we had to actually pick up our order before 3pm to get the "special pricing" ($40). That "pickup deadline" is a first for me, but nevertheless this is a tasty and great way to feed a larger group of people. Easy parking too.

Dinner at Yen Yen is better than lunch. Or maybe it's been so long that I've eaten dinner here that the quality has slipped across the board. Or maybe today was just an off service. Whatever it was, my Beef Tomato was not that great. It was only $6, so I'm not super disappointed, but the won ton it was served with were really cold, stale, and oily. Also, my girlfriend found a long, thick, coarse black hair in her Seafood Taro Basket. We've had really good multi-course dinners here in the past, so I'll most likely come again.

We have been occasional patrons of Yen Yen for years, but our last experience there has put us off for good. We ordered my kids' favorite- cake noodles with chicken. Good thing my younger son checked the food because there was a small roach tucked into his noodles. When we showed the waitress, she just asked if we wanted a new order. No comp or anything! Way to lose a customer for good. YUCK.

We just ate here tonight for the first time and this is the Chinese restaurant we have been searching for... It was awesome!!! We got Hot & sour soup, chicken with veggies, house fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. All of the food was cooked perfectly, the place was clean and the service was polite and prompt... 5 stars across the board!!! Our meal was all family size portions and there was only 2 of us so we have tons of leftovers for $33

My date and I ordered hot and sour soup, beef oyster noodle, and 6 egg rolls and a beer. The food was great and the prices were better.

Another hidden restaurant in the Enchanted Lakes Shopping center, Yen Yen is tucked back into the corner on the far side of the Safeway. It's a fairly small Chinese restaurant, but it's good for take out or dine-in. I enjoy the crunchy chow mein noodles with gai lan. That's always been a favorite and this place makes it as good as anywhere else. The rest of the food is good. The servers are friendly enough too. They do plenty of take-out here. You might even see the Kailua "Bee Man" here. Who is the Bee Man you ask? Well, one time I came in to pick up an order and saw this van with all kine bees flying about it. I didn't really notice until I parked right next to him. I mean, who looks for bees when finding a parking space in a busy lot?! I noticed his license plate said "Bee Man". I thought that was weird until I entered the restaurant. There was this grubby looking guy dining with his family and a couple of bees flying around him. I was pretty tripped out at this and looked over at one local guy dining as we walked in incredulously and he hilariously looked up at me and smiled, "Bee Man." Both of us almost started cracking up! What is the point of this story? I'm not exactly sure, but I guess if Yen Yen is good enough for the Bee Man, then it's good enough for me.

Yen Yen has amazing food, not bland like some other Chinese restaurants. Their prices aren't bad either for the quality and quantity of food you get. My favorites are the honey walnut shrimp and Mongolian beef though pretty much everything I have tried there has been delicious. The service there is also very attentive and the food usually comes out very fast.

This restaurant makes some of the best honey walnut shrimp you'll ever find. Clean atmosphere (weird, for a Chinese restaurant) and great crispy fried chicken (my wife's favorite). A-

Sorry rave reviewers but we had terrible service by a sour faced waitress who looked like she wanted us GONE. We were both uncomfortable! Why? Haole hater? what? We are both born and raised in Hawaii. She didn't speak slowly enough for us to understand her explanation of 'brown gravy'--which I didn't know about over the chow fun noodles? We ordered noodles and walnut shrimp. The noodles were so greasy they could light a fire as kindling! The walnut shrimp was sugary sweet but lacking any other flavor. Between the greasy noodles and the sour faced woman who hated her job---even though we had NO attitude except smiles--I will never go back. We've eaten there for many YEARS. No longer. aloha.

This place is a hidden jewel. Great Chinese food and cheap too. The lunch time special is a fantastic deal especially for out in Hawaii. They give you complimentary tea while you wait and the wIt is not very long at all. The down side is that it is a hole in the wall so don't expect great atmosphere.

I have been going here since I was a little kid. I have to say it is one of the good ones on the island. The services is great they are a small restaurant so the waitresses are on it when you need water or something else. I have nothing to complain about the food, everything I had was excellent.

There are several different restaurants in the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center to choose from. Agree with Brian A that it is another hidden restaurant in the shopping center. Yen Yen is a very good choice for either sit down or take out. The restaurant also has lunch and dinner specials. Restaurant is bright and clean and noisy but is typical of Chinese restaurants in Hawaii. I've tried the chow fun before and it has always been tasty. Tonight was no different. The noodles are coated with lots of flavor. I think (and I'm guessing) from the shoyu and oyster sauce. Here is our menu of choice: Regular chow fun - excellent! You can also order it with beef or choy sum. Portion for 4 people. Taro basket with seafood - Nah. Don't order this. It was filled with lots of broccoli and one piece of shrimp, 2-3 small pieces of scallops, 2-3 pieces of squid, small mushrooms. Not enough sauce. Not worth the $10+ price. Chinese Chicken Salad - excellent. Dressing on the vinegar side but nontheless very good with lettuce, of course chicken, slivers of carrots and wun tun. Pork with sweet sour cabbage - excellent. Sliced thin pork marinated with sweet sour cabbage. Sauce was excellent with rice! Rice - typical minute rice. We arrived at the restaurant on a Friday about 6:30pm. The restaurant was about half full. Then when we were done after 7pm, the restaurant was jam packed! Food came in I swear less than 10 minutes. Must have lots of people working in the back preparing the food. We took a peek in the kitchen since our car was in the back. Yup, there were at least 5 people back there. Waitress was okay. She forgot to bring the rice so I had to show her the rice bowl and said "rice please." She came around twice for water too. Only one waitress (poor thing) for 12 tables. Her feet is going to hurt tonight. Ample free parking. Oh, pricing was affordable. We will be back to Yen Yen for sure. Look for the chow fun on the table.

I was able to order off the menu for char siu and choi sum with dry lo mein without any fuss, and it was very good as well as a good-sized portion for less than $7!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
