No indoor seating. You order a bento and relax outside and grub. Probably the only spot I eat when I go to Kailua. Garlic chicken is on point and always fills. Kanak attack waiting to happen though, so be ready to pass out at Lanikai.

Went to Kailua today and was hungry for a plate lunch. I didn't know where to go so I checked Yelp. Had good reviews so we decided to try it. Had the hamburger steak and fried chicken combo and my girlfriend had the garlic chicken. Our food was really good and tasty. Even the mac salad was good. We phoned the order in and it was ready when we got there. I totally appreciate it when the food is ready when I take the time to phone in my order. I'll definitely be back to Fatboys when I'm in Kailua.

Not impressed. Walked in and was completely ignored by lady behind the counter who was to busy playing on her tablet. Won't even bother going back! So it says my review is shorter than most but that's cause I have nothing nice to say.....

Disappointing that they ran out of Ahi because I wanted to order their Kilauea Volcano Spiced Fresh Ahi Salad. At $7.99 it sounded like the perfect dish that I wanted for dinner )))): Oh well. Instead I ordered the Baked Shoyu chicken mini plate. The flavor just seemed a bit salty and sweet, nothing too complex. Topped with a couple sesame seeds and served with white rice and toss (which contained some bitter green I didn't like) with a creamy papaya seed dressing. Not the greatest food for the price, nor was the service very fast. I'd eat here out of necessity, but not choice.

All Fatboy's are not created equal. Other Fatboy's may have a wider menu selection, but I'd have to say this one has the best garlic chicken. And what's not to love? Friendly staff, massive portions, and amazing comfort food. An ideal pre or post beach meal. Garlic chicken 10/10- obviously Chicken cutlet w/ gravy 9.5/10- Crispy, tender, perfectly cooked. Gravy was noms but could have been a little thicker Fatboy's bento 9/10- Hot dog wasn't my fave, but everything else was great. Probably one of my favorite teri beefs on the island. Helpful hint: replace the spam with extra garlic chicken. Spam ain't got shit on garlic chicken.

First and last time dining here, stone faced younger korean girl cashier, why must you watch my wife like a hawk stalking its prey just because she wanted to add some condements to her dish? No personality and my bbq mixed plate was nothing to rave about.

The food was good. A little expensive for two cheeseburgers and fries but pretty good taste. Service was horrible. You could clearly tell the women didn't want to be there and was short and rude. Ketchup pump was out and she was very stingy with the ketchup packets. Food was decent but probably won't go back.

I thought this was a mom and pop store until we drove around the island and saw a few other locations. This location is super small. We had no idea what to order so the lady working there let us try their garlic chicken. She gave us two big chunks of chicken. It was pretty good so I ordered that and hubby got the bento (hot dog, spam, chicken, fish, meat, rice). Food was filling. We sat outside to enjoy our food.

Everyone says it, but the Garlic Chicken Plate is THE best!! I love it. Large (Regular) plate gets you 8-9 pieces with mac or regular salad and 2 scoops of rice. A good filling meal for around $9. You can also call ahead an order. I live right down the road and every time I've called ahead, they have it ready when I show up maybe 4-5 minutes later. They haven't disappointed yet!

Solid choice for garlic chicken. Personally I font like to order the large because the taste can get bland after a while. They give you a very fair amount. Worker seemed tired and unenthused would appreciate some charisma yo liven up the vibe Great hole in the wall establishment recommended when in lanikai kailua

5-star for their plate lunches 2-stars for the sandwiches I tried a fish sandwich today and was really disappointed. : ( I paid $12 for a drink, fries and a fish sandwich. The garlic fries hardly had any garlic and were undercooked. The fish sandwich I couldn't finish because it tasted so bad. I'd go back for their garlic chicken plate but I will never order a sandwich and fries from them again.

We got the thanksgiving feast. It was great. But the commercials on the radio are so bad, I never want to try fat boys again. My parents from out of town ordered the thanksgiving feast when they came to visit. They always ask me if I've visited fat boys. I almost throw up thinking about their annoying commercials and say no I haven't tried it. No further questions please.

This place was okay. I thought there would be indoor seating area but there is none. Seating is outside. Too hot to be seating outdoors but there was a sun umbrella. Food we ordered was okay for plate lunches: shoyu chicken, kalbi type of beef, red hotdog (?), rice, and fried fish. Oh we had beef stir fried with egg as well.

Small little restaurant in the corner of a plaza, Fat Boy's serve quick/fast/delicious local plates and bentos. They're known for their Garlic Chicken, but the bf and I didnt get that. He got the bento and i got the ahi tuna salad (hey i was craving some greens okay!). Overall, it's a quick service kinda place, no seating except a few tables outside. The server was nice, very fast and efficient at what she does, and the place was quite busy. Most items are around $7-12 good portions and very filling. Although my ahi was a bit overcooked, it was a giant salad and was very happy with my choice. Good variety of greens and very delicious dressing. The BF's bento came with garlic chicken, katsu chicken..and one other item over a bed of rice. Very filling and yummy per his statement. If you're looking for a quick bite in Kailua without breaking the bank, I would recommend this place :)

All the locals rave about Fat Boy's and their Garlic Chicken Plate, so my friend and I finally came here on our last day in Hawaii. I'll admit that it was much tastier than expected! The service here was super lame (poor girl must have been bored out of her freaking mind at 10am) but we were excited to try this shoyu and garlic glazed piece of work. The plate itself looks rather unappetizing but the chicken does pair well with the rice, and the helpings are generous. I would recommend the macaroni salad as a side, though I've had better. I'm glad I got to try something with more local flavor, but honestly I would not recommend Fat Boy's to other tourists looking to conserve one of their precious meals. The upside of this place is that it's open relatively late.

This place is ok. I thought it would be better. When you say fat boy you would think big portions but that's not how it is here with some dishes. The sign said rack of lamb $14.00+ so I thought I'd give it a try at med rare. I have to say the lamb was perfect but it was no rack. It was just three pieces! I'm pretty sure a rack is six to seven pieces. definitely not worth the price. The loco moco was on the skoshi side too. The bowl was big but it looked small in the big bowl. The patty was good but small under the over easy egg. One thing I can vouch for is the garlic chicken. (sorry no pic) The flavor was definitely there and the portion was good. The taste kinda reminds me of RC drive inn crispy shoyu chicken. Taste was almost similar. Parking was good for a Sunday and customer service was good. wait time was not that long because we were the only ones there. I would come back but definitely getting something else.

I recommend this place for good local food and was not disappointed. I had the the hamburger steak with brown gravy. They're mac salad was a little heavy on mayo but everybody makes it different. I would recommend this to anyone.

I actually enjoyed the food. Got the bento box since I didn't know what to get and it was a good choice as I got to try the famous chili garlic chicken. Good portions for the price. Surprisingly, the wife only found it average.

I came here after hearing all the rave reviews about their garlic chicken. I love garlic chicken and when I saw on a yelp talk thread that fatboys in Kailua had the best, I planned a time to drive out to Kailua to give it a try. I thought it would be a bigger establishment, but it's literally just a counter where you order. There are a couple outdoor tables just outside though. The menu is pretty typical: plate lunches, poke, etc. of course, I ordered the garlic chicken. It was good. I don't know if it's the best garlic chicken I've ever had, but it was good. The cashiers were nice considering the huge crowd inside. We were kinda packed in there waiting for our orders. It was a little too squishy for me. They were a little overwhelmed though and didn't follow through with my transaction. I had to awkwardly leave my signed receipt on the counter under a paperweight so it wouldn't blow away every time the door opened. Will I be back? Ehhhh maybe if I'm in the area, but I have a few other favorite places I like going to in Kailua. Fatboys has ample parking and is located across from Starbucks. Starbucks and garlic fried chicken=yum.

Fat Boys bento was one of the best bentos to eat in Kailua. We haven't been here in awhile and perhaps we won't come back. Rice was like Chinese rice and didn't stick....garlic chicken hmmmm no taste. Best thing in this bento was the red hot dog and Teri meat. They need to go back to the recipe they used to make their garlic chicken... it used to be Awesome....sadly not anymore :( they really should receive no star.

We we looking for a spot to eat in Kailua (a city that we weren't too familiar with). Found this place on Yelp, and overall the food was just ok and left me kind of disappointed. The rave reviews over the garlic chicken had us order that along with their chicken katsu. Both plates came with a side of mac salad and rice. The garlic chicken looked and had a taste consistency of orange chicken from P.E., it was just flavored differently. It didn't have any real garlicky taste, it was more like soy sauce dumped over it or something. The majority of it was really hard and dry, which didn't make us too happy. If you've ever had dry/hard orange chicken from P.E., then that's what it tasted like for the most part. The katsu on the other hand was pretty good. Nicely fried, and the chicken was moist. Our sides were good. Hard to mess up white rice and mac salad though. The service was just ok, nothing amazing or anything. The prices were reasonable also. Cheers!

I chalk my experience tonight to some of the food looks a whole lot better than it actually tastes. That being said we ordered a poke bowl, a bacon cheeseburger, and the garlic fries with parmesan cheese. The poke bowl looked great and that was about it, the fish tasted old and not fresh at all. The bread used for the cheeseburger didn't really hold up to the juices of the burger making the bread soggy. The saving grace was the garlic fries which was definitely tasty, chock full of garlic that you could actually taste. Me & the wife were actually kinda fighting for the last fry. In all the experience was meh. Don't think I would go back to a place just for fries no matter how good it was especially if everything else wasn't that great.

Not all fat boys are the same. The fat boys at Keeamoku have more selections, but they don't know how to cook. This Fat Boys in Kailua has less selection (mostly local plate lunches), but they know how to cook: Mini Curry plate 3 stars - It'll be enough to just order a mini because they give so much. Though the taste is ok, it's just ok. Not as flavorful, but ok. Mini Chicken Katsu Plate 4 stars - this was made to order, and was really good with a good chunk of chicken meat inside. Nice and crispy! French Fries - 3 stars - as we went to the bathroom in the back, I saw one of the employees eating the fries and she said it was the best. It was ok, but nothing worth raving about. Service 4 stars - the people behind the counter were very friendly and personable, especially to my kids. Outside seating is limited, but there were nobody around. However, parts of the tables and chairs were dirtied with bird doodoo, and we didn't help by feeding the birds our leftover rice and french fries.

Me to niece: "What do you want for lunch?" Her: "I've been thinking about garlic chicken at Fat Boys." Easy enough. It was my first visit. Food quality was definitely a step above your usual plate lunch. The place was packed with local construction and trade guys and office wahine on lunch break. More than half the people seemed to be ordering the garlic chicken. I got a teri-cheeseburger special that included fries for $8. This took a long time to come out because they were busy and it was cooked to order. Much faster to just order off the pre-cooked hot trays. It was a GREAT burger but I keep forgetting I don't really like the sweetness of a teri burger, so I'll order something else next time. GARLIC CHICKEN, DUH! Oh yeah, service was efficient and they pleasantly gave me a tap water with ice with no rolling of eyes. I'm a fan. (Why not five stars? Well, the floor on the customer side near the register needs repair instead of just being covered with layers of mats. You can't keep that clean. And looking behind the counter while waiting... you can see that the stuff stored on the floor needs to be pulled so the floor behind the register could also get a thorough cleaning. The front of the place was clean and neat enough though.)

The food here is excellent. My only major down fall was I was mislead on the pricing of their food. If you look them up on the internet and download their menu, COMPLETELY different from their in store menu. I was expecting to pay $7.50 for a mixed plate as shown online at their website/menu . Wrong! Got their and it was $10.75 Do not go by what their online menu says, it's out dated and it should be changed. That was the main reason for going here because it looked cheap, but in fact it wasn't.

After a failed attempt at about 3 other places in Kailua, my friends and I ended up here. Service: don't expect any smiling faces. I get that they're pretty busy but they don't smile at all. I was actually afraid of them! not because they were mean, but just how rushed they seemed to be with everything that i was actually afraid to order a soda. I ordered the Fatboy's bento. To the owners: please update your prices. Your board says it is $7.50, yet I was charged 7.95 and $8.37 with tax. I thought for a second that you had charged me for the cup of water but it was my fault for paying before questioning you. I was too scared to speak up. Anyways, it's basically a zippac. Now, I would have said this was better than zippy's zip pac, but their slice of beef was a complete letdown. Salty to the max. I thought it was just me till I mentioned it to a friend who said the same thing. I didn't eat mine. I've had better garlic chicken. it was good, but nothing i'd go back for. but the fish was good. tarter sauce tasted kinda weird though. can't place my finger on its taste just yet. would i go back? probably not but if someone asked me to go try it with them I would as Teddy's is right across the street.

Pretty much anything you order from Fatboys is Onolisious. The Garlic chicken is my all time fav. Been grinding their plates from back in the days when they were off Nimitz. Usually we hit up the Kailua shop but when around town, hit up Keeaumoku shop. Props peeps

Fat Boy's has some really tasty garlic chicken and I recommend it to all of my friends. I've tried some of their other menu items, and without a doubt, the garlic chicken is still my favorite. Parking in the area can be limited especially during lunch and dinner. There's usually a line of people waiting to order but the food comes out pretty quickly.

Fat Boys in Kailua disappointed me a little. I know the price of Ahi can be a little high...but if youre gonna offer a ginger crusted Ahi for $12...it should be a decent size. Refer to the pics I posted of the plate lunch I got. Look at the size of the rice scoops compared to the fish? Was all that rice really necessary? s3-media3.ak.yelpcdn.com… I should have just gotten the Fat Boys Bento which was only $7.50 but WAY more food! At least now I know! After eating the ahi plate, it wasnt satisfying, the sauce was minimal and not very flavorful. The bento on the other hand had way more flavor and was filling. Yes, I ate all of the Ahi plate and some of the bento too! Thats how tiny it was. Anyway, Fat Boys in Waipio never did me wrong. Maybe it was my food choice. Definitely wont be ordering that Ahi special again. I took the food to go, but if you plan on eating there, its limited outdoor seating.

I read the review about the employees not being all that polite and I have to agree. They weren't mean, but they made it seem they could care less and that they didn't want to be there. The food was alright. I ordered the loco moco. The patty was really dry from either cooked too long or all the juices were squeezed out. It was bad, but I've had better. My friend got the garlic chicken. That was pretty good. I wish I had gotten that instead, but I have also had better. Overall, I would probably go again if it came to it, but I won't go out of my way to eat there.

My boyfriend and I shared the garlic chicken with Mac salad. It was good, but nothing to write home about. Just an average plate lunch, I'd say.

  • Lynne H.

Excellent...........2 thumb up! Their garlic chicken is great. It's not your traditional (shoyu based) garlic chicken, but it's oh so good. Their beef stew and their curry stew has a great flavor, but I would love more veggies (carrots, potatoes, etc.) in it, and small chunks of it. The meat could use more simmering - it's sometimes tough, and less fat on it would be nice. Their rice is hard.....not sure why. The mini sizes are generous. The new hours that they have are much more convenient.

My fiance and I had dinner here the evening of April 4, along with my fiance's friends Amy and Jared. We stopped here for dinner since we were staying close by at a vacation rental, and after a day of snorkeling at Hanauma Bay we were starving for some good food. The positives of this place is that the portions are huge. I don't think any one of us finished our food. Ellen had the garlic chicken plate and I had the BBQ mixed plate, and I forgot what the others had. We had way more food than we could eat even if we spread it out over two days. The negative is that the quality of the food really wasn't that great, or even good. Even the garlic chicken which everyone seems to rave about was meh. For the price, I guess it wasn't too bad, but the food reminded me of a cheap buffet where you go to stuff your face. I'd go back only if someone else wanted to, but it definitely wouldn't be first on my list in the area.

When I asked where to go to lunch, she asked "Local?" (of course...) and then "Healthy?" In which I replied "I am on vacation". Fat Boy's was then recommended. All I can say is its a great place to go for some local grub! I will be back.

Type of food: Local Hawaii Plate Lunch Great food (highly recommend the garlic chicken) and great portions for the price you pay. Even a mini plate can satisfy a hungry stomach. No complaints about the food. Been here at least 10 times. The reason why I did not give it 5 stars are for the following reasons: #1) difficult to find parking nearby #2) there are little tables available to eat at (tables are outside) #3) hostesses can be more polite - sure the place can be busy, but the hostesses can "rub people the wrong way" Overall the place is great and I would highly recommend it if you haven't gone there before.

Pretty good breakfast. Wait wasn't too bad & food was delicious! Wish there were inside seating though. But overall 1st time experience was awesome. Kamehameha breakfast is the choice to get, plus side garlic chicken & potato mac salad.

Best place to go for a quick bite to eat in Kailua, especially if you're famished from spending the day at the beach. Portions are generous too! I usually go for the shoyu chicken, beef curry or beef stew, but their menu is pretty extensive so there are many, many more options.

  • Lindsay M.

Fatboys gets rave reviews in Kailua, but we still prefer Food Company (Enchanted Lake). Tried Fatboys one more time yesterday, and found the same. Their mac salad was just mayonnaisey, not much taste, too gloppy. The Chicken Katsu I ordered was way over-fried, to the point where the breading was hard to bite through. Poor cuts of chicken, mediocre katsu sauce, just not great. For almost twice the price of Food Company, definitely not worth it. We won't be going back to Fatboys.

  • Amber G.

The garlic chicken has NEVER dissapointed me. All my kids love it and my husband craves it all day at work. The food is always hot and fresh and I like that they have a good green salad mix with some napa cabbage and watercress in there. Mac salad is meh, I've had better but goes well with the chicken. Sometimes they run out of brown rice early, grrr but I I'll still eat white rice or get all toss. I also love their beef stew, my second Fave here. I'm a serious beef stew connoisseur cause really only my Chinese Hawaiian father makes THE BEST BEEF STEW. Theirs is pretty tasty and well cooked. If I catch an undercooked carrot or potato in my stew you're in for a bad review from me. I tried an ahi Katsu special once and that was winnerz too. They have a good reputation for a reason so bookmark this place and come be ONE with the garlic chicken!

Loved this place more than the one on Keeaumoku. It struck me as strange that the same restaurant in different locations would and could taste so different. The garlic chicken is yummy. My mainland friend went home craving their teri burger, she says this is the FIRST place she will visit if and when she visits again. I love that this fast food joint has gourmet daily specials. I am definitely making it a part of all my visits home.

My favorite place to eat since moving to Oahu! I always get the short ribs plate and they are absolutely amazing! The food is always hot. The sauce they put on it is to die for. I've also tried the teriyaki chicken which is great as well. I wasn't in love with the garlic chicken but that could just be a personal preference, All the plates come with rice and choice of macaroni salad or tossed salad. Staff is super friendly. We always park across the street near the Macy's and Jamba Juice because that lot is so much bigger. There is no inside seating but there are about 6 tables right outside. You should definitely go here!

Got the regular sized fish special it tasted pretty good. My buddy got the small sized fish. IT WAS THE SAME SIZE! The bigger size that I paid $3 more for had the same sized fish and only included an extra scoop of rice! ABSURD!

183/365 After a long morning of kayaking, we came here for a late lunch around 2. Upon entering, we were the only ones ordering and a few other people eating and enjoying their plates outside. While we were ordering, it did get more crowded with other people coming in. They have a wide selection of local plate lunches and 2 daily specials. Coming in, I knew that they were pretty known for their garlic chicken so I went with their garlic chicken "bento" for $5.50 with tax. Its more like a mini plate but with only rice with furikake and the chicken, no choice of side (mac or toss salad). The chicken was moist and very flavorful, a good garlic flavor and sweet and salty. My pieces were very meaty and not really fatty so that was good. Probably up their with the best garlic chicken i've tasted. The prices are very reasonable too, esp considering the portions. Overall, the chicken alone was a 5 but I'll definitely have to come back again to try more of their dishes. The service was a bit slow, esp considering they took forever to give us our plates that were already made and just sitting on the counter top...

My husband and I have been trying all the drive in's and had so far had great experiences...this wasn't one of em.... I think we came at a bad time and am willing to give it another go but we waited at least a half hour and watched people come and go while we continued to wait...and then the food wasn't that warm or good.

Fat Boy's... Now I can see why you would name a restaurant that... They are conveniently located in Kailua, across from Whole Foods and behind Times. Working in the area, I went here on a Saturday for lunch and to be honest with you, I didn't know what I should order. Ok, let me give you a tip. If you're not sure and they have a bento, order it. I believe that you get a small sampling of a few of their items from the menu. I was right! Their bento consisted of garlic chicken, teri beef, deep fried fish, spam and a hot dog on a bed of rice with furikake. You know what? I liked it, very much! The chicken was really good and tasty. The teri beef was tender, something not too many places prepare the right way. The fish was ok, but tasty with the tartar sauce. I'm guessing the hotdog was from Redondos. I'd definitely go back again, working in construction, we don't always get to go to very many places. But in Kailua, that's not the case!! Oh, back to the name... If I ate here everyday, I'd be a Fat Boy!!!

Very disappointed in the Teri cheeseburger and garlic fries. The burger had no Teri taste and fries tasted like it was flavored with garlic powder. I guess the only thing I can eat there is the garlic chicken.

HB and I wanted to try some local fare from Kailua and ended up at Fat Boy's. He got the garlic chicken and Maui ribs. I got the local roast pork and some fried mahi-mahi. Both came with heapings of carbs, which is a great deal if you're looking to feed at least 4 people between 2 orders. Then I got food poisoning because I'm an idiot. I noticed the roast pork and the sauce it was wallowing in tasted funky but I kept going anyway thinking it was a local Hawaiian flavour that I'm just not used to. After the horrific symptoms of food poisoning surfaced the next day (which are highly inappropriate for a Yelp review), I then realized if Darwin was right, I would have been the girl who tasted a bitter berry and not clued in that it's poisonous. *boink* We went in close to 8:30PM so maybe we got old food, but still no excuse to be serving old food. Everything was so-so. Maui ribs were decent but if I'm back for a Hawaiian barbeque, I think I'll stick to a proper luau.

The food is great but the service absolutely sucks! I love the garlic chicken and I go there a lot for it but that will change. The last three times I ate there I dealt with an elderly local "aunty" that made me want to throw my food and drink right back in her face. No smile, no welcoming greeting, one word answers and did I mention no smiles! Then she hands me my fat boys bento and the cover is not on correctly. In stead of fixing it herself she hands me the bag and gives me a half-ass "sorry" and watches me attempt to close the bento. She is terrible and if I ever go back and see her there, I won't order. I will leave and go somewhere else. The food is awesome but that lady sucks.

Super satisfying comfort food! While service is friendly, the staff here works at their own leisurely pace. Maybe that's the way the food tastes like it was made with love. :) Take-out seems to be the most popular option, although some outdoor seating is available. We loved the BBQ Mix Plate and were also told to have all the soda we liked. We would have ordered some garlic chicken too, which looked crispy and delicious and appears in my dreams in though I have never tasted it yet.

Having a place to sit and eat doesn't matter. What matters is having kick-ass local BBQ; and this place has it. Try any of the plate lunches with mac salad, get it to go, and go have a picnic on the beach! The staff here is sort of aloof which can be a turn off-- if they didn't provide such exceptional fare. Of course, where BBQ chicken is involved how can I do anything but rave?

Very different from the branch near Ala Moana, counter only, no indoor seating. Garlic chicken and curry were good, brown rice available for an extra .50, but they don't carry the grass fed local virtuous meat that their sister restaurant downtown does. Different menu, Different vibe, the country cousin to the upscale one in Honolulu.

Ok, who told everyone about FatBoy's onion rings?!?! I am in love and suddenly every time I go, they are all gone!! Apparently I am not the only one with fat kid fantasies about the amazing onion rings, crispy batter, and seasalt!!!! I always get the garlic chicken plate. Now, I've never had this Mitsuken chicken everyone talks about, but I can't imagine anything better than Fatboy's! So much garlic my breath...and my car...reek for the next week. Yum! The mac salad is great, too! I am usually not the biggest fan of the plate lunch mac salad, but again, whatever crack Fatboy's puts in theirs...I'm hooked! Their rice is nothing mind-blowing, but it's pretty hard to make stand out plain white rice. I already warned auntie that they'd better stock up on onion rings if I ever get knocked up, if I'm hooked on them this bad now, I'd had to see what the prego version of me will do if I get a craving and they're sold out!

So after a late afternoon Sunday hike at the pillbox me and my girlfriend decide to treat ourselves to a well deserved "hit the spot" dinner. Just so happens that day fat boys happened to close at 8pm and we decided to test our luck. Upon arriving we were greeted by friendly staff that were real patient when taking our order. To be honest their nice customer saved their rating from a one star. Anyhow, as nice as their customer service was it was something that caught my eye immediately. Next to their register appears to be a cafeteria style open table that keeps certain foods warm. I couldn't help but notice they had their "signature" garlic chicken sitting out for who knows how long and other entrees on their menu. I noticed what seemed to be DRY CRUSTED, FOR GOD SAKES STIR ME EVERY HOUR OR SOMETHING CHILI sitting out for who knows how long too! I'm not a very picky person but something like food presentation is real important to me and I made sure NOT to order anything that they had sitting out. After placing our order, it was time to eat....sadly our experience took a turn for the WORST. The Teri hamburger steak I ordered was RIDICULOUSLY DRY AND TOUGH. My gf decided to have their FRIED FISH, the mahi ended up being flaky yet after asking for a SINGLE SLICE OF LEMON we found out they were out! Last my gf's brother ordered a pork chop plate, I decided to give it one last go yet his pork chop was DRY AND SALTY BEYOND REASON! I'm sorry fat boys, I tried my best to like your food because I'm a sucker for hearty plate lunches but even if it was a late Sunday afternoon, you really needed to fix your QUALITY OF FOOD. I never thought I'd find a place that's WORSE than L&L, I just did when I came to fat boys.

A sign inside reads: A cow has 4 stomachs...lucky bastards. Yeah I don't know about that. The garlic chicken wasn't as good as I've had elsewhere but my Teri chicken was pretty good. The thing that wasn't that great was the service and the seating. Only one person was working up front and she was taking orders, serving, and ringing people up. Good on her but she needed some help. The line was a little too slow for me. Seating is tight and even when we found one we were pestered by a jerk-of-a-bird! I might come here again but probably not. Also as usual parking can be a pain around here too.

The food was bad, tasted like it was sitting for a while before they serves it.

Fat Boys is da bes'! Monday's the adobo is to die for! The garlic chicken is always awesome. Just tried the Teri beef plate, delicious! And of course the short ribs get me every time! Can't wait for Friday, Kalua Pig!

I don't eat at FatBoy's anymore :( Why? Last time I ate their garlic chicken I got food poisoning. No joke, puking and everything. Don't eat anything here after 5pm. Seriously. Especially the chicken because a lot of it is just sitting out there for hours. I decided to try this location once more because my friends really wanted to eat here. I ordered the chicken katsu this time and was severely underwhelmed. Couldn't even finish half of it. They changed the menu, boxes and the prices from the last time I went and I don't think it is for the better - more tourist friendly maybe. Certainly no longer a "local" drive in. The katsu sauce was super thick and straight from the bottle - not the way I like it at all. The dressing for the lettuce was kind of gross and I didn't get a choice on what kind I wanted either. Rice was a little strange tasting too. Maybe a little sour? I don't know. Wasn't awesome. Service was great though, fast friendly and efficient. There is your 2 stars. But, I really want to like FatBoy's, I do. I used to come here frequently before the garlic chicken fiasco. But, now it seems I won't be back :(

Not the best beef stew, not the worst, but extra points for being the only place open in Kailua on "Tsunami Of Destruction Day." Plus one for the overweight, tattooed, haole lady and her "baby" jumbo rat talking story with everything. $8 for a beef stew plate. This is not the gross inedible beef stew found at Elmer Fudd's Bachelor Pad, but it was not enjoyable. Very hard chunks of meat with big munks of fat, hard carrots, ok potatoes (how do you muss a potato, srsly?) and some celery. All the proper ingredients and an orange sauce. Maybe it just hadn't been simmering long enough? The dog inhaled it. Rice was too mushy, but that's to be expected. Toss Salad was shredded iceberg and tangy french. Again, just ok. Chicken Katsu was hot and made to order, but overcooked and the katsu sauce had too much brown in it (what is that? steak sauce? worchestershire?) Funny because I walked in and there was the bored lady on register AND the two chef dudes in the back all blinking at me expectantly, waiting for an order to come out of my mouth, their hands hovering over their tools. Creepy or attentive? You decide. I will not come back unless this place is the only place open (again). Go to Formaggio or the Thai place or CPK or try something new!

Visit: 10/27/09 - Dinner. Had the garlic chicken. The garlic chicken was pretty good. The rice was not that nice. Kinda crunchy. Salad was fresh and tasty. Price was okay. I would come back.

my go-to plate lunch spot after a morning of kayaking out to the islands. Garlic chicken is amazing, as is the bbq mixed plate. Friendly, fast, outdoor seating. Just plain yum

Garlic Chicken. Sure they have other stuff, I just haven't tried anything else. While avoiding traffic we stopped in here for a snack. We ordered two four piece Garlic Chicken side orders ($2.50 each) and they were nice enough to give us 10 pieces total. My wife had some at a party the weekend before, and since we were hiding out in Kailua letting traffic die down we thought we'd stop in for a snack. The Garlic Chicken was tasty, moist, not too greasy, and had a hard to describe Japanese flavor. I'd get it again, but won't crave it. The girls in front of us ordered a tasty looking Loco Moco. Apparently breakfast is big here (half the menu is devoted to it) including items like Corn Beef Hash and Fried Rice Omelet. The lunch selections look to bee pretty standard (Beef Stew, Katsu, etc) with Roast Pork, Kalua Cabbage, and the Garlic Chicken thrown in the mix. Additionally they have a fairly extensive catering menu. It's basically a better quality plate lunch place. According to the message from the owner that's written on the menu they try to "provide a well-rounded daily menu of local favorites and gourmet specials, all with no MSG added." I look forward to coming back sometime, and trying other items. In truth , I rushed to post this review since it's not easy to get a Kailua first in Charlie D.'s hood. LOL

prices seem decent the short ribs were soo good.. I wish I ordered more there is only outdoor seating

By far the worst burger I have ever had... There was no flavor. Tasted worse than a cafeteria burger. The fries sucked too, frozen crinkle fries... Dissapointed I wasted calories on this place.

  • Justin B.

You gotta love Fatboys! Unlike many other plate lunch places Fatboys makes the effort to offer daily specials and deliver fresh food that is cooked in small batches. The only reason it gets 4 stars is because it is super small and the line moves agonizingly slow. Furthermore, the staff move pretty slow too and don't seem to care about organizing those individuals coming in and those going out. AND they accept credit cards.... good on them.... shows they are not greedy.

  • Lili A.

My brother loves this place! So...whenever we have a brother-sister date, this is where we usually end up. If you're local, you may be comforted by the selection of dishes such as beef stew, garlic chicken, Teri beef, breaded mahi etc. They have bentos, mixed plates and daily specials which are all reasonably priced. BUT, you've probably tasted better elsewhere. The food isn't bad at all, it's just been done better by other places. If you're visiting, it's a good place to stop by and pick up plate lunches or bentos for the beach. It's an ok place to try local-style food without busting your wallet. Parking in the front is limited, but there are more spaces in the back around the corner.

  • chuck m.

When you are a hungry braddah, this is the place to check out. Located on the way to the beach, it is so convenient. Quick service but sometimes kind of long lines so might be slow. Check out the bento. Hot Dog Teriyaki meat Chicken Spam Fish All the makings of a good lunch.

  • Bret H.

I have been a fan of the garlic chicken and beef stew, but over time I've gotten annoyed with three things: 1) Giant clods of fat on the stew meat 2) Oily, overbreaded garlic chicken 3) For what you pay, portions on the small side Still, it's gonna be pretty damn tasty. You just spend a lot of time sawing inedibles off your food, and you end up feeling like you just ate a huge box of fat.

  • Claudia M.

Food here is amazing OMG. Delicious. The only problem here is the parking. Not many parking spots by here. But overall a delicious place (:

    (4)
  • Kanoe P.

True, parking is not easy here, but definitely worth driving around a bit!! The aunties are super friendly, and the food is AHHHMAZING! Fat boy bento is a never fail, always winning choice, and is packed with all kinds of goodies. The PERFECT addition to a day at the beach!

    (5)
  • Lee M.

The food is very good but the service sucks! Is it that hard to ask for some customer service with my hamburger steak & BBQ chicken mixed plate? Or even a smile at least. Granted, the food that I have tasted is wicked ono but the service makes me rate this place at 2-stars.

    (2)
  • Brandon Y.

Fat Boy's carried me through lunch time at least twice a week from when they first opened in the Kalihi Kai area until that location closed. So I made it a point to eat at the Kailua location as often as we were on the windward side. They usually have a good fish special, and their garlic chicken and kalua cabbage are always great go-to's. They also make a great tuna melt (not sure if it's still on the menu) and their burgers are fat. Definitely one of the better plate-lunch places on the island.

  • Anne W.

My husband loved his garlic chicken so I can't give this place a super bad review. But, my onion rings were so underdone. Yuck. How do you screw up onion rings??!?! Oh well, will give this place a second chance.

I've gone here 3 times and tried 3 different things. My advice: go to The Food Company. The first 2 times I was disappointed and had had better, but this 3rd time I just plain hated it. Save your money or go somewhere else instead.

  • Kai D.

Go here when you are super hungry. The portions are massive and the food is super good. Garlic Chicken is hands down my favorite and my girlfriend always gets the bento. This is the spot to go to after or before a day at the beach.

  • Justin S.

The garlic chicken is ok. you know from the other reviews where the best is at. Everything is just ok. Stopped by on the way back from lanikai, and someone nice brought the chicken back for me to try. Might be back if I'm stuck in Kailua with no place to eat, but there are a lot of other places around the area.

    (3)
  • Fernando G.

it is easy to admit that i am no expert in the fine art of life indulgences. however, a quick hike atop lanikai's "pillbox" with a bunch of friends who don't mind eating fabulous "plate lunches" at the beach afterwards makes more sense than not. fatboy's it was. again ! wow their garlic chicken is like pollen to a bee. yummm :) we decided on different dishes and to create a beach food-athon. oh lala ! :) again, garlic chicken was a winner. i opted on their chicken with mushroom and gravy on rice as well. absolutely delicious ! it was funny to see myself trying to eat my rice and gravy with chopsticks. duah ! didn't want a drop of of it to go untouched ... uneaten in this case. i absolutely enjoyed my combo. one other choice was the crab and tuna wrap with tobiko. yummm-ilicious. seriously ! beef terriyaki was nice as was the curried beef stew. all in all, a fantastic lunch ! :) waiting in line can sometimes be an issue at this place. yet worth 100% best part of it tho, aunties are super friendly ... and that in the eye of any business makes the experience a best. :)

Just as the name says if you eat here all the time you will get fat unless you're doing some psycho lance Armstrong style work out menus. It's unhealthy and they're proud of it so what can you do, at least they're being honest. I would recommend the garlic chicken, I can almost guarantee you will be sleeping 30 min after eating here, so if you're going on a lunch break good luck.

    (4)
  • Scott A.

Like the name, love the bento. The hot dog is neon pink and the meats inside are tasty. The other stuff is alright, just stick to the bento and take it with you on a kayak in Kailua!

    (4)
  • Mitchell P.

I tried the Fatboy's in Waipio. Their bento was pretty damn good, or at least compared to zippy's bento. For about the same price you get Mahimahi not Hoki (tilapia,) garlic chicken, spam, RED hot dog (every local knows the red dog is the best dog, in a bento, cause you don't have to cook 'em in shoyu -bugga taste good already!) and daikon on top of furikake, teri-sauce drenched rice. The garlic chicken is very good, just like most other garlic chicken. But, hands down no one can touch Mitsu-ken's garlic chicken. And don't judge the Mitsu-ken chicken til you had fresh and still steaming on top your rice. Back to the review at hand, I originally gave the place 4 stars, but I couldn't think of a reason why I took a star away except for maybe a small lunch menu. Overall, the place was clean, the service was good, prices were good, and the food was delicious. And they provide healthy alternatives (i.e. brown rice, organic brown rice, nalo greens.)

OMG!!!! stopped here for lunch after an beautiful afternoon at Lanikai Beach and again O.M.FREAKIN.G! I had the Ahi 3way! Amazing ! Party in my mouth! nori wrapped crab stuffed Ahi katsu has to be the most remarkably delicious Ahi I've ever eaten! Grilled garlic Ahi yummy! Seared Ahi as good of a cut as any five star restaurant I've been to, if but better! All for $12. Best kept secret!!!!!!!!!

My first time here after living in Hawaii for a total of 11 years! Went with my friend who just moved here and I figured I should try something I haven't tried yet. Kailua has always been my favorite place on Oahu and Fat Boy's hit the spot. The menu was big and had a a lot of various styles of food. I ordered the Fat Boy burger and fries. It had everything a basic burger would have, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato. The price is very affordable for the amount of food you get. I am hardly disappointed in any local food and this place definitely doesn't disappoint.

  • Wade H.

My cousin was here from California and I was looking for some local food in Kailua that I thought he would like. We phone ordered the garlic chicken. It was ready in about 10 minutes so that was cool. The plate consisted of the usual 2 scoops white rice, 1 scoop of mac salad, and about 8-10 pieces of boneless garlic chicken. It was ono and wasn't too overpowering. It tasted good while it was hot. We bought two regular sized plates and actually it could feed 3-4 hungry adults. Parking is limited because it's a small parking lot. Phone order so you don't have to wait in line.

  • Sharon N.

OMG the food is so freaking good here. Great plate lunch place. I love the garlic chicken and rice. I think it's cheaper to order a side of garlic chicken and a side of rice than getting the plate (if you don't want salad with it). I'd recommend that you get the sodas at the Times Supermarket across the street because it'd be cheaper and within walking distance. Beef stew was tasty but I got a hunk of fat and hardly any meat one time I got it. It helps to know the person scooping the food into the plate with the owner in the back.

  • Kalai F.

Food is pretty good. Garlic Chicken is a second rate next to mitsuken. Sorry, but i'm sick of eating garlic chicken already, but everything else is pretty good. The prices SUCK though! I guess they got caught in the hype with there prices of plate lunches. Especially if you're buying for a party. If you want the true plate lunch go check out K&K right down the road. There prices are better and their food is uncomparable! You'll never set foot in fat boys again.

The spicy garlic chicken is great. They have two locations - Kailua and Waipio, we first tried them when they were located by Sand Island. I like the bento plate with the mahi, garlic chicken, spam, hot dog and furikake rice. I need to try the burgers next.

    (5)
  • Morgan A.

The only deduction comes due to the price. The food is some of the best plate lunch in the state. Try it, I promise you will like it.

Got the chicken katsu curry and it was great... fast service... good prices... not particularly friendly and not much seating. Will be going back however after the remodel.

Not a bad plate lunch, but I compare everything to L&L, so what do I know?

  • Dave H.

Having high expectations of this place i was quite disappointed. I actually went a couple of times to make sure that the first time was not a fluke. Both times, disappointing none-the-less. I had the Garlic Chicken, which is what most people would agree on to get and b/c mitsuken sets the par, this place sadly does not compare. I'd go for ghetto hole-in the wall mitsuken over Fatboy's "upscale plate lunch" any time.

    (2)
  • Jo Ann V.

This place is on my speed-dial! Their garlic chicken's the best--order the Fat Boy's Bento & not only do you get the chicken but also teri beef, mahi, spam, hot dog, & takuan nestled on mounds of sticky white rice. They're not called Fat Boy's for nothing.

    (4)
  • Thien N.

This place was tasty. It was clean and the service was nice. The garlic chicken was scrumptious. The chicken katsu was tasty. The Bento box was good, I ate everything - the garlic chicken, mahi mahi, spam, teri beef...but couldn't quite eat the reddish hot dog. Nonetheless, it was a good value for someone who can never decide - me! I have checked it out three times, and twice it was super crowded. Worth a shot if you are in town!

Eh, just ok. the kalua pork was good but very small portion. A heaping tablespoon at best. Found chunks of egg in the mac salad. Ick. I left hungry.

I wish I could give something zero stars. Both my meal and my boyfriends meals were grease-filled and disgusting. We, unfortunately were starving and ate most of it - I immediately paid for this and my stomach took a few days to recover. I love a greasy fatty meal sometimes, but this was not enjoyable. Dont do it.

  • Joseph O.

If your not local kine they treat you badly. Food is Good but does not make up for the angry service. My family is hapa and I am not. Everytime I go there the service treats me badly unless I am with my local kine family

  • S F.

Love the garlic and shoyu chicken. The mac salad was really creamy. The salad dressing was surprisingly good. Sure its a little on the greasy side, but what do you expect, it's plate lunch. My wife prefers it to Rainbow drive in. I like L and L as well, but FatBoy's my new favorite. I'm going to be craving the garlic chicken until we return to Kailua.

wow no reviews for fat boys,, i'm suprised.. start with the good: food can be pretty good if you get what you ordered the bad: you may not get what you ordered I actually eat there once a week just because it's the only plate lunch place near there (i'm there on business weekly) the kal bi is good, everyone seems to like the garlic chicken which they make by the bucket full,, i love chicken espessially with garlic but for some strange reason i'm not a fan of theirs, (although i see lots and LOTS of people ordering it), I almost always get something wrong with my order, either cooked wrong or wrong items, it's a gamble, sometimes you make out sometimes not. Last week i ordered breakfast, eggs over easy, rice, portageee sausage and toast, well i knew i was in trouble when the girl asked me "how would you like your eggs cooked"? well i replied "i'd like my over easy eggs cooked OVER EASY" she didn't even bat an eye,,,, don't play poker with that one! somehow my toast turned into bacon but at least the drink was right,,, and on that note i think i'm off to fatboys
