Had so much fun at Sam's! Although we couldn't find it on our first try, I called and spoke to the incredibly friendly/bubbly bartender who happily explained how to get there. When we arrived she greeted us warmly and thanked us for coming in. The cocktails were strong and cheap, the characters - although they appeared rough around the edges - were friendly and welcoming. After a few drinks and some encouragement by the locals, a few in our group started singing. Everyone was cheered for and we learned that you sing along with everyone as they go. Such a warm/friendly/inviting atmosphere. No one is judging here. It truly felt like a place you could go back to and they would know your name and your favorite tune. The most amazing was when the bartender herself took the mic and sang a beautiful Hawaiian song all while making drinks, taking change and saying hi to everyone that stumbled in. Great dive bar!

This is a true friendly dive bar. We loved it as everyone was friendly and welcoming.

This is the bar I wish I had at every city I've ever lived in. Sam, the owner and bartender, pours heavy and often, which is what every bartender should do. The patrons are friendly and awesome, which makes the bar. I was fast friends with two exec chefs and 5 other folks inside 45 minutes by myself, and that was a Sunday afternoon. The wife and I will be back as many times as we can without being crazed stalkers or confirmed alcoholics.

Killer dive bar that is a bit hidden from the main street. Super nice bartenders and friendly crowd. It's a great place for watching football on Sunday morning while having a cocktail and eating breakfast. The sous-chef from a nice restaurant comes in on his day off and cooks his heart out for only $8 bucks a plate! Totally great find!

Wow what a great bar. Friendly bartender made me feel like I knew her my whole life. Great drinks and conversation. When I ask about the drink special the bartender changed it to something she liked and was not wrong on her choice. Fun place to hangout.

Sam's is a great dive bar. One kind of beer on tap, stiff drinks, excellent and friendly bartenders. Also on weekends there is hilarious karaoke. Most people singing here suck, so there's no pressure to not suck myself. Fun place. Don't be scared by its diveyness.

While in the wall bar, hidden from the street we went here for karaoke with a big crowd and the lone bartender handled it well.... she was super fast and accurate at the same time. The bar was small and hard to find but fun place.

Came back in two days later. Still super-awesome. Happened to be around when someone rang the bell, buying a round for the bar. We're lame-o tech types, and were reading our phones when we heard CLANGCLANGCLANGCLANG! Waitress came up to the window and said, "hey new guys! new guys! you just got a drink on the house, someone rang the bell!" As a tourist, when someone calls you "new guy" instead of ignoring you completely, you know you've found your people. I wish I could take this place with me on the plane. Seriously. Can't speak highly enough of this place. If you have a "local" back home, this is the place you really want to be.

We brought 50 people here For a bachelor party. The bartender was ecstatic! The three locals here didn't know what to say when we strolled in and started singing karaoke. What a night! A great dive bar, exactly what we were looking for. No tourists here ...except for us! Cheap drinks!!!!

The folks that work there are cool and the pricing is good. But its loud and the constant kareoke was brutal. I will for sure come back though.

If you're in the area and are tired of paying $10 for a drink then come here. Bartenders are really nice as well as the locals around here. Great dive bar where there aren't many to find.

Found this place on Yelp. It's definitey a dive bar. Drinks were super cheap! Bartender was friendly brought us popcorn and pretzels. Karaoke was hilarious. When songs came up for karaoke they had videos in the background to accompany them. Some of the videos were soo funny.

Puttin the "dive" in dive bar. This place is classic! Have a beer. Sing a song. And the rest just happens.

This place is a local dive bar. My friends and I went here because a waitress at Kona Brewing mentioned it. We had a hard time finding it because it is kind of hidden away in the back of the building that it is located. Hence, the hideaway name, I am guessing. The beer selection is pretty limited. It's mostly cheap domestics. I don't even think that they had food (or at least not much of a menu). The song selection is not the best. They also make you pay a $1 to sing a song, and the karaoke diva sometimes would disappear. Some of the people looked kind of sketchy, and one was even dancing crazily behind us when my friend and I were singing Lady Marmalade. So, why am I giving it four stars? Because I had a lot of fun here! You make due with what they have and rock out. The drinks are cheap. The bartender is a nice guy, and one of the best parts of this place. When you sing a song, people sing along. They even clap for you if you are awful (or awesome). It makes you feel good!

I adore Sam's Hideaway. When ever I am staying in Kona, I always go to Sam's. If you get there around 8-ish the place is lively with karaoke. So much fun. It's never really crowded, which I love, and the lighting is perfect (nice and dim). The bartenders and waitstaff are always really nice. I like to order rum & cokes with sailor jerry's rum, they never let me down. My most expensive bill was $45, and that was after my boyfriend and I ordered about 5 (possibly more) drinks each. Very reasonably priced.

Sams is the best place in Kona for a cold beer and great people. This place has karoake and some great singers. Get out of the chain bars and support the locals and have a great time! Tell them Barry sent you!

Small and a bit scary. If you are pure drinker...go here. If not, then you may not like it.

If you're a fan of dive bars, come here. Friendly crowd and great service. Kim was my bartender and was always ready when I needed another drink. Showed her a drink recipe native to the Pittsburgh area (try the Batman!) and she wrote it down for her book for the future.

Sam's is one of my favorite places to go when I'm in Kona. The staff is fun and friendly and the drinks are reasonably priced. Plus there is always great people watching, especially when they get the karaoke going! Definitely a fun, relaxed place to chill!

Sam's is where we get our beer on! Read Barry's review...well said. DEFinitely a great local hangout!
