Nice small hole in the wall. Very friendly.

If you're a fan of 'hole in the wall' type restaurants, you know, the ones that from the outside look like your unsure there's an actual eatery inside? This is your place buddy! Inside I found 3 very sweet & welcoming Grandmother types running the place, which is quite small but cozy, we had seen reviews on Yelp praising Da Moco Loco, think of it as a Loco Moco on steroids:) It certainly didn't disappoint as we gobbled up every bit of what had to be 3 pounds of bacon, spam, hamburger patty, eggs , rice and gravy , yes we had to take a nap shortly after so our bodies could work on what just took place. This place is awesome!

My sister and I split the Da Loco Moco. Its big enough to share and left us full. It satisfy our hunger but didn't blow us away. I thought the hamburger patty tasted a bit off. I wish the Spam was cooked a little more. Overall, a greasy meal to start the morning off. You can opt for white or fried rice. Fried rice is the way to go. We noticed many of the patrons that came in went straight to the fridge for the musubis. I didn't try but a friend in our group got a few for the road. I love the family business aspect of Oyako Tei and that I will gladly support over any breakfast chain. overall, a decent meal for fair price. Pretty close to the airport, as our group just flew in, this was a great find.

Da LOCO MOCO - simply heart attack but AMAZINGLY YUMMEH dish! The gravy and the eggs just makes all the meats melt in your mouth! Delicious, slightly salty Spam musubi - $1.95, cheap and good for to go on road trips or bring to the beach Friendly, family owned, hole in the wall place, love local food places like this

Great food. Love the feel, like I'm at my grandparents house. Ladies are very happy and friendly. Da loco moco is good and filling. Will defenetly be coming back here on my next trip to Maui. Thank you for the full belly for my flight home =).

So good. If you're over tourists and want to feel like you're at your Hawaiian Auntie's house; go here. While the food was tasty, the lovely women who work here was what really made the experience special. Towards the end of our vacation, me and my husband were kind of over tourist traps. We had our last breakfast here and the spirit of aloha was so strong here that it reminded us why we love this state. Skip the chain restaurants and support this fantastic family-owned business!

This was our very first dining in Maui. We ordered 'Da loco moco breakfast' and it was tasty but nothing I would want again. The gravy and beef patties were okay (needs more seasoning). We ordered the Ono plate which was breaded nicely and tasty too. My grandma had udon soup which she enjoyed. The ambience is grandmas crazy kitchen. It was truly memorable and that deserves 4 stars. Overall food was okay so 3 stars. So really it should be 3.5 stars.

My family and I always have to stop and grub here right after we land in Maui before we go about the rest of our travels. Eating here is like eating at your grandmama's house w/ all your aunties cooking and feeding you. You literally walk out feeling full of bomb, authentic Hawaiian food and love. The atmosphere is what sets this place apart from anywhere else. It's family owned and operated. Truly nothing fancy, but the ladies who run the business are so genuinely invested in their food and their patrons. And they give you soooooo much yummy foods! Only downside is that the place is a little small, but I personally think it adds to the homey, cozy feel. You gotta come here! You will not regret it.

  • Mike H.

Decided to grab a bento along with a masubi. Needless to say it was delicious.... It's a small restaurant. However, it's a place definitely worth visiting.

  • Diana D.

Hole in a wall place. I went here after reading great reviews but was disappointed with the food. I got 'da loco moco' and 'da piggy', both were awful. The gravy was not nice, meat seemed undercooked and eggs had shells in them. It's a family run business and the people were very nice but food was not great at all.

  • Bob E.

Found this place on Yelp when waiting for Costco to open one morning, and glad we did! A true locals joint, small and looks like 3 grandma's working behind the counter. Simple menu, cheap and great food. Very easy to find. Outstanding bacon!

  • Shane C.

Da Kine! This is place is a great place for the true local experience. My two hungry boys attempted to finish Da Loco Moco but couldn't polish them off. I had the fried mahi mahi plate lunch which was OK but the mac salad was some of the best I've had. Others had the teriyaki beef plate which was very tasty. We chatted it up with a few locals and had a great time. They also have steam table so you can build your own plate.

  • Dan M.

The food was very delicious! Everyone definitely needs to eat here and try the LokoMoko

  • Yoojin L.

I love this place..Food is great, staff is so friendly... The line can get a little long when it's rush hour but other than that, me and my boyfriend really enjoyed the food and the price :D Arigato ne!

  • Louis R.

I love little spots, owned by old-school locals. The spam loco moco here is delicious, and all that rice...yummm...and I'm a connoisseur of loco mocos. And don't sleep on the spam and eggs breffast(as they say it)...oh my gawd. Get a boxed lunch plate and hit the beach. No need to hit up a fancy resto, just do as the locals do. Aloha.

  • Kate Z.

Found this gem on last day at Maui. Home cooked breakfast and loved the grandmas. Forget the calorie count when on vacation and try the loco moco!

  • Nina R.

If you love average food, a dirty restaurant and being treated rudely because you are not a local, this is the place for you. Enjoy.

  • Nancy L.

Three little older woman work very hard in this local joint. It is definitely a LOCAL place. Food isn't fancy but it IS hardy, plentiful and fresh. Home cooking. Very small place. Lots' of people did take out while I was there waiting on our food.

if there was 10 starts i would give this place 10!!! BEST LOCAL FOOD ON THE ISLAND!!! We are so bummed we only had it once! We wanted to go back once more but they are closed on Sundays and Monday was Labor Day which they were closed for :(. Its literally a hidden gem and should totally check in out when you are out here. Its a small mom and pop restaurant with the sweetest and most welcoming ladies that own it. its in an industrial zone and they were even surprised on how we found them lol. They let us know as soon as we got there that it would be a bit of a wait since there was only one other person in the back (I think) My boyfriend ordered the Da Loco Moco and I got Spam and Eggs with fried rice. YOU HAVE TO TRY IT TO KNOW HOW GOOD THIS PLACE IS. They have the best spam musubi we have ever had. They are so soft and sealed tight to stay fresh! (Great snacks for the road to Hana). Try it out, you wont be disappointed!

Breakfast at true Hawaiian local dive. 3 adorable grandmas making us yummy food including a French toast sandwich with spam.

  • Tommy L.

A cozy place for breakfast, no frills. Even though this place has been around 11 years, it definitely gives you an even older Maui feel. Family owned, I ordered the loco moco. It tasted like something your mother would have made at home., warms the stomach and the soul. I recommend this place for a homey experience.

Japanese are the second largest ethnic group in Hawaii. At their peak in the 20's, "Local Japanese" made up 43% of the Hawaiian population [Wikipedia]. So with all of that concentration, one is bound to find some great Japanese-inspired cuisine -- even on the lesser inhabited islands. Restaurant Matsu and Oyako Tei were the two authentic "Local Japanese" restaurants we visited on our recent trip to Maui. Not only did these places make my favorite Spam Musubi's on the island [as referenced in a previous post], but they also tied for my favorite food experiences of the trip. Matsu We ate at Matsu thrice during our trip to Maui and I'm not sure if I got my fill. True, I was a bit of a hermit crab with my ordering. Each meal was the same. One Mochiko Spam Masubi, One Katsu Spam Musubi, One Mac Salad. The tastes still resonate in my mouth. I couldn't help it! These comforting dishes where just too good to stray from. I was lucky, however, that my wife explored the menu and I was able to do a little sampling: Matsu is a simple place with no frills in sight. Perhaps this is why so many yelpers have given it a mid-range score. I, for one, feel that it doesn't get much better than this place. Oyako Tei "Friends and Family Gather Here" read from a plaque on the wall. Overflow of kitchen supplies piled in the dining room of four tables. A shrine to the Spam Gods amassed behind the counter, bentos and musubis sat warm and ready for to-go customers and a group of older Japanese women shuffled around creating a chorus of comfort food. The food had a true "grandmother" feel and was practically perfect in every way [sorry Mary Poppins]. We ordered the Miso Butterfish, Spam Musubi, Mac Salad and Kimchi. Everything was worth ordering again, especially enjoyed that comforting butterfish. Which one of these two gems would I go to if only given the choice of one? I can't say. Anyone have a coin to flip?

  • JP F.

I waited long for my order...BUT....well worth the wait! You folks got to try there Loco Moco plate! Incredible amount for under 10 bucks! Folks there were really nice and apologize for the wait ...I'm definitely going back again! Mahalo !

  • Robert K.

What makes this place special are all the lovely aunties. If you are on Maui for a layover stop in you won't regret the warm aloha shared by these wonderful ladies. Go experience true local aloha oh and the food is da bomb. Nothing like starting a beautiful day this way.

    (5)
  • HK H.

The real deal, y'all: such amazing breakfast. Make sure you're hungry: there is no such thing as a tiny portion. Even the spam musubi are nice and chunky. I see there was a complaint about it being a hole in the wall in the middle of an industrial park. Yes, it is and that's a great thing! It's where are the hungry, hard-working folks are. :-)

    (5)
  • Suzy S.

Local and tiny spot for breakfast. 3 stars for the huge portions and warm service. It was served by ladies that made me feel like they were our aunties. It was more like a home cooked meal than anywhere we had tried during our visit to the island. One extra star for the outstanding fresh Spam Musubi that came out of that kitchen. I could have just eaten one of those for every day we visited, yummy!

    (4)
  • Julie G.

I absolutely love this place. Great prices for large portions. Da Loco Moco is enough for two people. The spam musubi is so tasty...A must try. You have to wait a little because they get busy with tourists and locals coming in and out. Trust me...it's worth it. The little bickering among the old ladies is so entertaining it makes the time pass quick. They are so sweet to their customers and make sure they are comfortable. I did nothing but smile there. There is limited seating but we have never had problems with that.

    (5)
  • Ana C.

Great cheap hole in the wall. Price is great, coffee was fresh and hot, and food was Filling and satisfying. There are only a few seats inside the restaurant so this would be a good place to grab and go.

  • Ryhden A.

Amazing little place with the friendliest staff! Right off the side of the road you'll find this awesome little mom and pop restaurant, you walk in and you'll be greeted by a few sweet little old ladies. Portions are perfect and prices are sweet! I'd say its a must try if you're looking for a local kine style breakfast. Order in or to go, either or service is fast.

  • Jeff C.

Great shop run by 3 elderly ladies. A very Japanese establishment with mainly local clientele. As tourists, we definitely stood out in this 4 table place. We ordered Da piggy breakfast, multiple Spam musubi, and Bento box for the Road to Hana. It was so delicious! This place is now my wife's favorite place to get spam musubi. Da Piggy is pretty standard American breakfast fare with Hawaiian influences like Spam. All items are made fresh and the bento even has an expiration time of a few hours labeled on top.

  • Glenn H.

This is not a fancy place, but the food here is awesome. Since we could not check into our hotel yet, we decided to have lunch. I ordered Da loco plate ( yelp special), which came with spam, Portuguese sausage, bacon& hamburger patty, eggs & gravy. My wife ordered the misoyaki butterfish which was very close yo Roy's. The guy that worked there knew we were from mainland because I ordered the Da loco moco and we took pictures of food. This is our go to place once we land.

  • Kaleinoheaokaainahau B.

This is a little jem in hiding. The food is ono (delicious). Go early it's worth waking up and going. If you want take out just call they will have it ready for you by the time you requested it. Must try the spam musubi yummy

  • Joshua C.

This is the epitome of "local." 4 tables. Extremely small area, but absolutely delicious food for a rediculously good price. The breakfast bowl was amazing. Highly recommend this place.

    (5)
  • Patrick T.

Hole in the wall family spot to get a quick bite to eat but not the cleanest. The people were really nice. I enjoyed the spam musubi much more than the loco moco which made my girlfriend's stomach hurt but I was fine

    (3)
  • Rob L.

Interesting breakfast place with good breakfast. They love Spam and I the bacon is great. They are uber friendly and great with kids

    (4)
  • Kristine A.

Excellent food, very reasonable prices and friendly service.

    (5)
  • Luke K.

Food is very affordable, everyone here is really nice. We were the last customers before they close up and the folks gave us some free wasubi! Only comment is food is a little sweet but that might be normally for Hawaiian food.

    (5)
  • David M.

Nostalgic hole in a wall with great local breakfast food. Felt like eating at my auntie's house with the staff coming outside to chat and the local regulars. I had the Beef Stew with rice bowl. It hit the spot! My friend had the breakfast bowl which she never got even close to finishing. Too big! You know it's a great value when the construction workers come in for breakfast. Really tiny place but you stomach will be happy you came here for your morning meal.

  • Marika K.

This place was surprisingly good.. We had some time to kill before the airport and found this cute place. Inside is very cluttered and bathroom is kinda gross.. it's super casual so don't expect much. The ladies there are older and so adorable.. They were very sweet. I got the chicken and it was good but there was some type of salad on the side and it wasn't my type of thing but the chicken was good.

    (4)
  • Precious T.

It's basically a hole in the wall, but you know what they say, it's the hole in the wall restaurants that have the best tasting food. I was a first-timer. Heard so much good things about this place from my former coworkers. I tried one of the specials, beef stew bowl. And OMG, it was wonderful! It's a big portion, loaded with a lot of meat. I couldn't even finish it! The meat was soft and the potatoes melted in your mouth. Definitely recommend this place.

    (5)
  • Jessie M.

Don't be deterred by the decor and size of the place. This was one of the best meals I've had in a while. Came in for breakfast around 7am, surrounded by old men reading the newspaper. The women who run the place were extremely cute and friendly. They were worried about me when I ordered their famed "Da Loco Moco" because it's so big but I had to try it. It did not disappoint. So much meaty salty gravy goodness. It was absolutely the best loco moco I've had and I think what made it so good was their gravy. Also tried their spam musubi and their awesome fried rice. I would eat here way too often if I lived nearby and probably end up weighing around 300 pounds.

    (5)
  • Whitney K.

The food is not bad it's average, it's a good price but the only thing bad was we had a group of 3 and it took 20 mins for the first persons plate to come, then 30 mins for the next plate to come, and the last plate came 35 mins after we ordered. Like seriously is there only one frying pan!? We used to come here pretty often but the service is always pretty slow. I would recommend calling in an order 30 mins before you actually get there. My oyako donbori had four small pieces of chicken. I don't think we'll be coming back here.

    (2)
  • Kelly O.

This place puts the "local" in "loco moco" !!!! (Eh, I guess that didn't really work.) For serious, though, what a great find. This is truly a locals place--you won't find any lacy napkins or sommeliers here. Two little older ladies work here and you just want to pinch their cheeks!! They were so cute and friendly. We got a pretty big portion of very good beef stew for like $6. I know, RIGHT?? The Hawaiian favorite macaroni salad was delish. Gnarly!

    (4)
  • Robert M.

Such an authentic Hawaiian place to have lunch/ brunch at and very reasonably priced. You really do feel like part of the family while your there, heck as we were walking out with our luggage, one of the family members asked if we would like a ride to the airport, we declined, but talk about the aloha state!

  • Gary N.

Family and I stopped by here this past Friday solely on the large number of 5-star reviews that this place received. It was a great choice as this restaurant was in an easy to find location on the main road and it was also close to the airport. Our first meal on the Valley Isle couldn't have been a better experience. We ordered two Misoyaki Butterfish plates and two Da Loco Moco plates ($8.50) with a few drinks. I was impressed at the amount of food that I got for my loco moco and it felt like a couple of pounds at least. Da Loco Moco is like a deluxe loco moco with a lot more than just the standard egg, hamburger, rice, and gravy. On top of all of this, there were two wide slices of Portuguese sausages, two slices of Spam, and one strip of bacon. I was a little confused at first with the gravy, because it was so light that it was transparent. I ended up liking it a lot though, because it wasn't greasy or fatty at all like other gravies. The thing that put this place over the top for us was how friendly everyone was. They engaged in a lot of conversation with us and were very helpful with giving us instructions to our tourist destinations. One of them even let us follow her on the road to get our destination easier.

Walked in off the street from the mainland. Friendly, good eats. A nice little joint that's easy on the budget...

    (4)
  • Kristina L.

Great local hole in the wall with some legit food. They were out of the Misoyaki Butterfish, so I was bummed about that. Hubs had "Da Loco Moco" and I had "Da Piggy" and it definitely satisfied Dis Piggy! Spam musubi was derishious just like Yelpers said! Got 2 extra for our flight back home and they were devoured halfway there.

  • Cindy K.

We stopped by Kahului for a bite to eat. The trusty Yelp app led us here. It's a mom&pop hole in the wall place, but the food is good! They have breakfast and lunch items here. Got the miso butter fish. SO GOOD! I never had miso butter fish before so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but this was good. I never had anything like it before. Mmm just thinking about it makes me drool. I highly recommend it! +spam masubi +macaroni salad +miso butter fish Come support this local family owned business! The old ladies here are very nice. Seating is limited and don't expect anything fancy. Just come hungry.

    (4)
  • Leann H.

The food was delicious. We ordered both the da loco Moco and teriyaki chicken! This is a must before you leave Maui if on vacation. Everyone was very friendly in this family owned restaurant!

    (5)
  • Mel D.

Small mom and pop place with incredible food, service and prices. True Ohana feeling!! Don't get turned off by the 4 tables a d the crowd of locals hanging out. Squeeze in on a table, order a plate as enjoy the conversations.

    (5)
  • Yola L.

Sooo good! Da loco moco was a big portion with a reasonable price and it was delicious. The ladies that work here are super friendly and coffee was included! Definately recommend this!

  • Neal B.

We stopped here as a last taste of Maui before flying home. We had the Loco Moco, which we had heard we should try while we were in Hawaii. It did not disappoint, it was very good! It was just right for us to split. It was the cheapest meal we had and the most entertaining. It was like sitting in a home town barber shop where people come to hang out, except it was all family. They were teasing each other and having a good time. They made us feel very comfortable, like being with family. Karen was an especially good waitress! Lol! You should go!

  • Steve S.

Excellent French toast. Loco moco looks impressive and the BIG breakfast looks perfect for the appetite

  • Renee Y.

In the same strip as Maui Specialty Chocolates. Little hole in the wall place - only 4 little tables. Had a quick lunch of the large bento, 2 hamburger deluxes, hamburger steak plate and a mini bento. Everything cooked to order and Ono! The Teri beef was especially good and it was just a nice local place. The ladies came and sat down (we were probably their last customers for the day cause we got there about 1:20 and they close at 2:00) and talked story with us. Super close to the airport so great for a quick cheap meal. Large bento was only $6.95 and the hamburger deluxe was $1.95 and both decent size for such a cheap price!

  • Lon H.

Stopped by on my brief stop to Maui. When I walked-in, I thought I was at a family gathering. Was greeted warmly by the ladies who made me feel right at home. Had Da Loco Moco and a couple of Spam Musubi's. Da Loco Moco was excellent and the Spam Musubi's were cooked fresh when I ordered. The ladies even gave me some goodies while I was there. Great service and great food. I'll be back on my next visit to Maui.

  • Bryan T.

If you are looking for an authentic Hawaiian meal, look no further than this hidden gem. The loco moco breakfast was perfect and the spicy spam musubi is a must. I split the meal with my brother and it was a perfect amount (we were both pretty famished). Great meal close-ish to the airport!

  • Edd B.

I had the yakitori chicken and it was good but the serving size was quite small for the price compared to other places ive tried near by. But nonetheless im glad I went and tried their offerings.

  • Jacqui W.

Staying at da Marriot and Noodles (shuttle guide) recommended this place. Awesome breakfast, homestlyle cooking and the ladies were so friendly. Got to try the warabi salad and it was da best!!! Highly recommend this place for breakfast be aware there are only 3 tables...but definitely worth it.

Oya means Parents, Ko means Children and walking into Oyako Tei is like going to your favorite elder Aunt's wee kitchen for a yummy bite of home-cooked food. Neighbors and friends stop by to pick up their take-out meals and to say hi, so it can get crowded. It's great for families with little kids, too. No worries if it's squeezy in there....the friendly locals will make room for you so you can enjoy "Da Loco Moco" (wow!), fresh caught fish, and other island favorites done up the old Aunties' kitchen savvy way. Warning; This is not for weight watcher members...that delicious transparent gravy is made from the drippings of all that good fried portuguese sausage, bacon, Maui beef and spam. Lots of fresh talk-story from all sides of the cafe and plenty smiles for free. This is not fast food, but more like Slo-food movement, so bring your patience and enjoy the Oyako Tei ohana!

    (4)
  • Anna W.

Saimin & Da Piggy bfast, and a piece of french toast. Generous servings! Delightful owners! They even gave us some just picked fruit that a family friend brought in. How sweet! We took up all their space, it appears. Sometimes, the staff gets confused as to who ordered what and bringing out complete orders without gentle reminders. The friendliness really made up for it.

    (4)
  • Jaime D.

nothing fancy just your old school mothers cooking! i got the moco loco for about 8 bucks, really good. i felt like i was at my moms house just having breakfast. i was in and out and it was delicious.

  • Joyce F.

Da Loco moko is a lot of food but oh so good. The ladies are very attentive. True hawaiian food cooked while you wait.

    (5)
  • Scott H.

Da Loco Moco is delicious! Hamburger patty, portuguese sausage, spam, bacon and gravy over rice. Serving is huge and it's VERY tasty. Worth the $10! Spam musubi was delicious, too. Service is a little slow and the dining room is small, but the food is great.

Locals may find this interesting, but after reading all the raves on Yelp, we were really expecting something a lot better. It gives "Hole in the Wall" all new meaning. It really is tucked away in the middle of no where, so you will have to seek it out. Upon walking into the cafe, there are about four tables and at least two of them had the workers sitting there reading the paper, so this is really casual. I had seen some French Toast on a post that looked good, so I ordered that and it was meh - French Toast...I could make it just as well...there were two other specials - a really big breakfast with everything but the kitchen sink and their version of Loco Moco - my friend had that - not the best he's experienced either, but good, honest food. I didn't see any bickering sisters, just a messy little spot with home cooking that you might get at your Aunt Lulus. They were preparing a lunch to go plate - the friend chicken did look good, but I didn't try it. Buyer beware on this place - not sure it's worth the raves I see here...plenty of other spots on Maui are better.

  • Keiko S.

I love the name... Oyako means "parents and children", and this place reminds me of my grandma's kitchen back home. It's small, but cozy. Having said that, the ladies working here are very warm and welcoming, just like my grandma, and the food was as comforting. We were really looking forward to trying their "miso butter fish/cod" (mentioned in the reviews), but they were out. Bummer. They couldn't prepare the chicken teriyaki so early in the morning, so we went with: beef teriyaki, roasted beef and adobo pork. We hate to sound picky, but the beef teriyaki could've been less salty, whereas the beef and pork could've used more seasoning. The food was filling and satisfying nonetheless, and it was a nice way to start the day. This is definitely a local establishment with many regulars, and it's somewhat difficult to find. Without Yelp, we wouldn't have even noticed the sign. SUM: A very casual, homey restaurant we'd love to support!

WATCH OUT FOR THAT FIRST STEP! It's a doozy! We had a 4 hour layover after coming in from the mainland and decided to head into town real quick for some non-airport food and to see what the area was like. I found this place on the trusty ol' Yelp app and we made our way over here. Definitely not what I expected and far from what my girlfriend was probably hoping for with our first meal in Hawaii. On the way in, she stubbed her two on the step up and hurt the mood. None of the workers saw it but after I ordered my loco moco one of the ladies there got her a cup of ice to put on her toe. Great hospitality. The food was delicious and if you're looking for legit Hawaiian food in Kahului that isn't gouged by tourists than this is the spot.

  • Sasha C.

came here on our way back to the airport for some real local lunch. found on yelp and was intrigued by the oxtail soup. we had that and it did not disappoint! it tastes like you are visitng a friend's home for lunch! we also tried the mackarel which was yummy, along with the shoyu chicken and rice. everything was tasty and satisfying. the seating is tight so come at non peak times! they also close early so we were never able to try them for dinner!

    (4)
  • Kathy W.

Strolled in early in the morning. Very homey feel with all the older ladies there. we tried loco moco and ono fish for breakfast, very LARGE portion, and very yummy. yes, Fish for breakfast, very healthy!!

  • Jarey W.

First stop off the the plane given the previous yelp reviews. It's clear that this small shop run by three nice old ladies is frequented mainly by locals. The breakfast plate was good. I had the Portuguese sausage, which was tasty. The Musubi were also good but not quite as good as some places I've had, especially in Oahu. The tuna was a bit sweet for my taste. Service was relatively quick and nothing fancy, as it definitely has more of that hole in the wall diner feel, which I personally love. Most of the food is priced well. I would come back for a relaxing meal while reading the Wall Street Journal that they provide free, haha.

So we had to stop in no our way back to the airport to fly out. The gazebo restaurant's wait was ridiculous and we were trying to catch a flight so we went back to the depedable :) This time I ordered the breakfast sandwich, in which I didn't want spam so she said I could replace it. I was surprised, I thought I'd just go without but needless to say bacon and portugese sausage together were amazing. With egg and some sort of white cheese on a sort of panini type bread, it was delicious. And it was only like $5.95 or something. Mom got the bento box, decent, brother got the teriyaki beef, which was nice and tender and plenty of rice, forgot the name of dad's, but it was interesting. Can't even explain it, it had so many different flavors. But, it's useless describing without the name... Anyways I love this cozy little place stop in if you're in Maui it's close to Costco and the airport!

It's a hole in the wall, that serves really awesome meals...the ladies there are truly nice...the loco moco is awesome

This is not a restaurant. Hole in the wall with four tables. Food may be great but I will never know since I didn't stay. Limited menu and not a comfortable place to have breakfast.

Don't see where these great reviews are coming from. I had the breakfast plate, mediocre at best. The place is a mess and not clean. Service is lacking.

Love this little restaurant! Their menu varies day to day - after looking at yelp reviews and pics, I had my heart/stomach set on some Ono but they were out. Their oxtail soup looked really yummy but that wasn't on the menu today. Nevertheless, i had a mini plate of some sautéed bok choy and meat, a spam masubi, and ate off of my husband's chicken yakitori plate which was all delicious! The ladies who run the place were all very sweet, and it did feel like I was eating at my aunt's restaurant :) we are definitely coming back!

Breakfast burrito is bomb! Actually, everything is! Good food for cheap prices! Must have the breakfast burrito, shoyu chicken, shoyu hotdog & dry min EVERY SINGLE TIME we take out! We live a minute away, so it's always convenient for us :))

Very local very nice. Feels like your grandma,s house where you can eat what ever your want. Had there lunch bento, very good. To make it sweeter, the grandma, made it for me after the posted the close sign. Really appreciated.

The was average local grinds. We went around 1045 and the bentos were cold, tho good price and meat variety. The terri beef was the best! The shoyu chicken had really good flavor but tough and dry. Mac salad was good but a bit too much mayo.

Great start to a great vacay on Maui! Found this place thanks to Yelp! Friendly grammies running the place. Breakfast was awesome. Order "Da Piggy" and you'll be set for the rest of the day. Food cooked fresh to order! Bacon, eggs, sausage, spam and rice... what more could you ask for to start your day before ziplining for the first time! Simple, but good! Small, but cozy! The grammies made us laugh through the whole breakfast... loved it!

So good! Glad we stopped to this little tiny spot! Nice people, great food (best spam masubi), and very local. Awesome! Very nice people!

This is an interesting breakfast shop (I think they close at 2pm?) that seems like it's run by five old Asian ladies who seem pretty nice and social. The tables and front area is cluttered. The signs don't look that great. But the food was good and large portions. Teri chicken very good Beef is pretty good Spam, bacon, sausage and portuguese sausage were good Da Piggy seemed like a pretty good thing to buy. Also, it looks like they deliver. I'll definitely come back but I'll probably do togo or delivery next time.

Average rating because I was not able to eat here. After driving around looking for new places to try, wife and I wanted to sit down and relax while we enjoyed some good food. When we walked in, the tables were covered with stuff, like a living room table. There were 4 or 5 relatives of the owner seated, hanging out. There was nowhere else to sit inside, so we left. A little too uncomfortable for us. I don't mind if separate tables, but it seemed the family style table was the only place to sit. Maybe next time, when we want to order take out, I'll be back and post an updated review of the food and service.

A great little gem hole in the wall. Limited tables, but gratuitous old ohana aunties, tutus and cousins working here to make your food and make you feel welcome. Should chicken, yum, miso butterfish is delish, I was told the teriyaki beef was yum and the chicken yakitori was 'broke da mouth good". Salads all good, Mac, potato and greens. They also gave us some freebies little fiddlehead ferns in soy/ sesame, cabbage namasu pickled...yum, and let Austin taste the teriyaki spam, which he loved. Good stop, yummy authentic food, Hawaiian hospitality.

I came by for the bento and spam musubi. The lady was kind, but I had ordered to go and did not get to experience the dining in the store experience. It would've been nice if there was brown rice because the spam and meat are all very fattening.

I was really excited to try this place before my flight home, and had foregone macadamia nut pancakes and other breakfast options in Kaanapali/Lahaina so that we could make it to the Kahului area to get a last taste of authentic Hawaiian food. However, when I arrived, I was greeted by "auntie" ladies as I expected from the other reviews. Instead, the door was closed and a paper sign was up. They were on vacation from May 14th to 24th?? Boo. Though I can't actually rate the food, I work in the restaurant business and I know Yelp and word of mouth is important in attracting customers. Tip of the day: Make an announcement on Yelp that you are closed if you are going to be gone for a long period of time! That way, I (and other customers) wouldn't venture out there just to be disappointed!

Last chance for local grinds as we headed to the airport and yelped to find a breakfast place since we had time to kill. We walked in to find 3 ladies sitting inside the little restaurant and totally understood other reviewers comments of feeling like you are in your grandma's kitchen! One of the ladies got up and took our order. Then they all discussed their upcoming vacation. What a comfy vibe. Food arrived quickly and was totally delicious. Sure it's nothing fancy but it's solid food. I took some chow mein for the plane and enjoy some king's bread french toast. My husband had a loco moco breakfast complete with spam, sausage and eggs! Cash only. Definitely recommend.

Real. Local. Food. If want some real grinds that real people eat come here. If you want or expect anything else, you can go to Ihop/Bennigans/Some-other-Midwest-chain. If you are a self described "foodie" expecting an old auntie to wait on you hand and foot, maybe you should check out that new vegan-Asian-fusion-tapas place that has been blowing up on twitter. I'm looking at you Laguna Beach. On to the review: Very friendly service. The fry rice was good, as was the bobby sausage plate. It seems as though the owners always have their friends/family over to hang out. We learned at there is a young haole ophthalmologist from Hilo that is really good, and works miracles on cataracts. The auntie forgot his name, so you'll just have to come and ask her later when she remembers it. 4 for da grinds. 5 for da people.

After so many great leads from Yelp reviews, we've finally been led astray. We like casual. We like a "home" feeling. But this is the extreme. There were tables for ten, IF the cook wasn't using two to roll sushi, and an owner/worker/friend wasn't using one to watch Japanese soap operas. We took the last space available, as the only paying customers, to stare at overflowing stacks of boxes and inventory while having our lunch. The menu was limited, the food was ordinary (we had chicken yakatori and a fresh pork plate), and nothing made this a four star restaurant. Ordering a lettuce salad and a macaroni salad brought us two small Styrofoam containers from under the counter, prepackaged and tasteless, The people were friendly, but almost bothered by our intrusion into their space. My grandmother's kitchen was never this unwelcoming, never this cramped, nor was the food ever so boring.

warning :) this is not your ordinary breakfast place. I think it's ran by 2 or 3 gen of Japanese American where you can see good set of family photos on the wall, behind the kitchen, on the freezer, on the counter .....we order "Da Loco Moco" we know we are getting a surfer's breakfast at Kahului there is something wrong there :) I gave it a 4 to share the different style of Hawaii with culture touch there. feel like your grandma would've done if she is making a loco moco. super friendly old mama staff. if you eat rice for your breakfast, this is probably your place.

Spam misubi was great, and the price is good, too. We also tries da loco moco, but it was kinda salty.

Was not impressed with the food except for the incredible Pahole salad which was served on the side. They would make a mint if they could bottle this and sell. Other than that the food was kinda "tired" the day my Mom and I went to check this out. Their breakfast special sounded good!

Their Oxtail Soup was sooo ono! Lot's of oxtails, with bamboo shoots, mushrooms and some kind of mustard cabbabe I think. Comes with grated giner and a large scoop of rice. Great broth!

My guy found this place ,and what a find it was!!!! We got there right before they were closing, and it seemed as though they were out of most items. As we headed for the door, an elderly Japanese lady literally pushed me back in! "What, no food???" I told her it looked as though they were out of most of their menu. She assured me they weren't, and that they would make us anything on the menu fresh. Well, I honestly felt as though we had to stay that point. I didn't want to piss off the older woman. I had some of the best miso black cod, and the best Spam musubi EVER. My guy had teriyaki beef, and his was really good too. Since it was pretty hectic in there, with kids running around and such, (and they were closing soon), we decided to take our food to go. OMG, it was so good, we went back the next day! We got there earlier the following day, and once again they prepared everything fresh! I was seriously impressed. The prices were VERY reasonable, and the family working there was super friendly and nice. The restaurant has an unfamiliar vibe to it, at least for me. You feel as though you're in someone's house, not a restaurant. Probably because there are older ladies sitting at a table gossiping, and kids going in and out. It sounds strange, but both my guy and I found it oddly enjoyable. On our second trip, we tried the spicy Spam musubi, and wow, I can't even believe how much I loved it. I had the miso black cod again, and one of the older ladies literally watched me eating it, and looked so pleased that I was enjoying it so much. This place is such a great little gem of a restaurant. It's definitely a local spot, as they seemed a little surprised that people that didn't live in the area were there. My only regret is that we didn't find this place sooner, as we might have had lunch there nearly every day.

These obachans invented the concept of "hole in the wall" restaurants. I arrived shortly after noon and ordered the three-choice mix plate. They only had two choices available, and both were cabbage. I did have the sense to order the spicy musubi that others recommended. It made up for everything else that was screwy. The reason that this place gets its amazingly high rating is that they are loved by the community. These obachans say down and chatted with us and provided valuable local info that actually saved us some time and helped us plan our last day on the island. Very sweet ladies! Ah, was cuz they closing early... Boddah you?

Loveeeed this place!!! On my honeymoon I wanted to try authentic restaurants and this was one of my favorites for breakfast! The breakfast burrito was amazing and it's family owned what's better than that!

I felt like I was in my Grandma's kitchen. Everyone was sitting there and just talking about random stuff... sometimes it was even TMI lol. Food portions were huge and filling. Kinda felt bad that I could only eat half of mine.

I felt like we were eating with my boyfriend's family on Oahu. This place is legit. They have a menu, and some premade dishes that you can pick from. I had the Shoyu Chicken with rice, the side salad with a yummy house dressing, and a green bean dish. It was all good. I really wanted the shoyu potatoes too, because I love shoyu potatoes, but figured I would die from eating too much. I would have been right, I was stuffed. My boyfriend asked if they had spam musubi (we didn't see it listed anywhere) They were happy to make them. They were so good, he ordered more to pick up on our way to the airport the last day. This is comfort food that you would expect at your mom's (or aunty's). With the atmosphere to match.

Super friendly staff in a small restaurant serving "local" food. I had "Da Piggy" comprised of two eggs, two pieces of bacon, two pieces of breakfast sausage, two pieces of spicy sausage, two pieces of spam, and a ball of rice. The only green thing I had was the green tea. I will be back.

Visiting Maui around the holidays and stopped in for lunch. The unagi don was awesome. They gave me a huge piece of eel on top of a bed of rice, and the sauce on the unagi was perfect. Definitely reminded me of my last unagi don in Japan.

not impressed... im a foodie but no food snob... i was excited to see butterfish on the menu and my boyfriends ordered the loko moko... his bowl of rice soup was grey and gooey... while my styrofoam plate of food was nearly inedible... add to that this place needs a serious cleaning... im not sure how its gotten so many good reviews... but this is not a stop i would make again

Absolutely love this place. Went to Maui for a business trip from Oahu a couple months ago ended up at this dainty restaurant for lunch. #1 great local food and big portions #2 great local service. What more so you need?! The owners abs workers are very sweet and welcoming. They love to talk story and make sure everyone is taken care of. It's hard to find this type of local service on Oahu.

Stopped in based on prior yelp reviews and could not have been happier. Yes it is a very small kinda hole in the wall place which just adds to the charm. The ladies were wam, friendly, and funny too! Authentic Hawaiian home cooking. One of us had the Loco Moco (lots of meat) and the other the Big Breakfast (which included delicious French Toast) - from beginning to end - it was a memorable and tasty meal. A great note to end our trip to Maui on. Very close to the airport so an easy stop when coming or going. Enjoy!

This is a small family owned place. Came here through Yelp recommendation and thought their food was decent. Like everyone else says, the spicy spam musubi is tasty and the bento boxes are good to take for plane trips back to the mainland. We asked about pickled mango and they let us try a homemade stash. Not much else to say. Workers are really friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is really cluttered. ps. its CASH ONLY

This is the place to get a great breakfast for a really reasonable price. I myself had the Piggy Breakfast since I am a pig when it comes to eating. I inhaled the piggy that consists of spam, Portuguese sausage, bacon, eggs, potato's. The g/f ordered the small version without spam but ate quite a bit of my food. On the counter they had pickled mango that was delicious, and pickled cucumbers with seaweed. This place is a hole in the wall but really autrhentic. The woman that run the place are all Asian and fairly up in age. They looked at us and wondered how and why we were there. We told them we saw them on Yelp and they got really excited. I felt as if they were family and we were in there home eating breakfast. Nice place , good people, and tasty food.

feels so homey.. like waiting for grandma and mom to cook you your breakfast. luckily I came in and had no customers dining inside in the morning. most people that came in were grabbing musubi's on the go. so i stayed and ate inside. food was ono :) ordered the piggy plate.. came with 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 Portuguese sausage, 1 slice spam 1 scoop rice. TOTALLY hit the spot. :)

Cute grandmas working this joint. Family run business with a total old, dirty, outdated signs & tables. Nevertheless, loved their food and bento boxes to go for our plane ride! Take it to GO and enjoy! XOXO to the cute little grandmas who shuffles across their kitchen/store. :D

Good food at a reasonable price. Can't ask for much more. We stopped there on the way to the airport before we left Maui and I had the french toast, which was yummy. We also got some food to go - bento type stuff, which we ate on the plane later.

GREAT breakfast. Perfect hole-in-the wall restaurant. Ate here first thing in the morning before heading on the Road to Hana, and the food gave me the energy to hike to like a hundred waterfalls. I had the best time because it was like walking into your Auntie's kitchen. Just 2 tables with plastic table cloths, and food you can point to. I ordered the big breakfast and it came with eggs, french toast, and spam and portuguese sausage. YUM!!! Definite hidden gem of Maui!

Aloha yelpers, this place is incredible! Right when I walked in, I was greeted by the beautiful ladies that oyako tei a really special place to conclude my vacation in Maui. My first review so don't expect much. The place was a family owned restaurant and the family would just sit around hangin out. They were very nice and they told us what to do on the island. The food was great and very inexpensive so I give it 5 stars. I would recommend the teriyaki beef.

The other reviews are right on. It's like walking into lola or auntie's kitchen and having something to eat. Wife said the place looked like her folk's home when she was growing up. Plastic picnic table clothes and shoyu on the table. They were out of what I wanted (butterfish) so I settled for opa. Was good. My wife had the bento and of course, I had to order the Spam musubi. Pretty good but I still make my musubi better. We arrived at close to closing and everyone was on their lunch break. We were offered bites of everyone's lunch! Lasagna was one of the lunch specials but I was so full from trying everyone's lunch, I couldn't do it. Not a bad place to eat. Stop on in. It's behind the KFC and next to the chocolate shop. We got to watch some lunch time Japanese soap opera as part of our dining experience too!

This is a family owned and operated restaurant that serves delicious local and Japanese food. The spicy spam musubi was very tasty as well as the lunch plate of cabbage and pork with rice and salad. They have pre-made bento style lunch boxes that are perfect to take to the beautiful Maui beaches. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and the service is super friendly with plenty of aloha!

Hands down the best breaded teriyaki on Maui. Being a local Asian, I enjoy the atmosphere at Oyako Tei. Like the rest of the reviews say, it feels like I step into my Baban's (grandma's) kitchen every time I step foot in there. The workers are amazingly friendly and welcoming and make you feel like you're part of their family. On the other hand, I do feel that it is pretty cluttered in the dining area. There are a lot of boxes, very little seating space and a lot of people hanging out, but it's the epitome of a "hang loose" local restaurant. Some of their other dishes that are my favorite are their hamburger steak, which I believe is made with local beef, their bentos, yakitori chicken and their teriyaki hot dogs. One of the best steaks I've ever eaten at a plate lunch restaurant was their flat iron steak that they occasionally serve on their specials menu. Oyako Tei delivers to anywhere in Kahului, but I believe there is a minimum purchase required. They only serve food until 2 pm Monday - Saturday. Parking is not a problem. We stopped by for lunch today and saw that they now accept credit cards. If you're looking for a fancy restaurant where people call you "ma'am or sir" don't go to Oyako Tei. But if you want a good plate lunch at a reasonable price served to you by people who treat you like family, you'll love it here. And after you're done eating lunch, take a mosey down the sidewalk to visit Maui Specialty Chocolate for dessert, because they're only footsteps away. Happy eating!

This was the best loco moco I have ever had! Funky little place with family and friends of the owners running in and out like it was a kitchen in a home. Inexpensive but they still use Maui raised beef. I'll be back

Tucked away in an industrial looking street, you would never think to stop here. It was a totally local and authentic breakfast/lunch with all the spam you could ever hope for. Its like the Hawaiian grandmother you never had making you a home cooked meal (so don't expect anything fancy!) but you'll leave full and happy. Everything is pretty much a version of a rice plate and the only people we saw here were locals. We even came back again right before getting on the plane to grab some bento boxes for the ride home.
