Last Wednesday, I grabbed a quick bite to eat at Sushi Kahuna. The lunch rush was over so there was virtually no line. They assembled my small spicy ahi bowl and 1/2 order of regular udon right after I placed my order. Although I didn't actually dig into the food until about 10 minutes later, the udon was still hot :) The spicy ahi bowl wasn't spicy at all, unless you count the wasabi. Don't get me wrong, it isn't entirely bad, but if I were to come here again, I'd skip it and go with a full sized order of the regular udon (which was surprisingly quite good). The pricing here was very reasonable. I paid an extra $2-$3 for the 1/2 order udon so my total cost for lunch was a whopping $8!

ahi bowl is AMAZING. too bad i got white rice when i asked for brown. just like my dating life everything else there isn't that good

My most trusted sushi joint downtown. Clean and fresh, very hospitable staff. Cannot ask for more for the price - which is very reasonable.

this is my go-to lunch spot for the spicy ahi bowl. I don't know who invented the ahi bowl, but this place is da best! thin slices of onion on top, and a more mayo-y mixture. I usually pour some extra Nanami Togarashi on there for good measure too. Mom & Pop run store with some other sushi and Japanese items I've never tried. Sometimes there is a Japanese radio station playing from a little radio in the back - perfect.

Not bad at all! I ordered the large spicy ahi bowl ($7.50) and enjoyed it. Surprisingly it filled me up and I didn't feel the need to snack on anything like I normally do after lunch. Haha! The spicy ahi mix is not too spicy as others pointed out, but it does have some kick to it. The fish seemed of good quality, not fishy at all. The sushi rice is cooked well, very toothsome and mild tasting, with sesame seeds and thinly shaved onions sprinkled on top. You really can't beat the price for portion here. I used to frequent the other spicy ahi places nearby, but honestly they tend to be pricey for the same portion and quality. Workers here are always friendly and orders come out quick! Will visit again soon :)

I honestly had no idea this place existed. Hmm. I'm downtown running errands or in a meeting at least a few times a week, yet I never heard of this cheap eat called... SUSHI KAHUNA! Yesterday, I bumped into my sister on downtown errands day, so we decide on a quick bite. Preferably a cheap quick bite, since we both had to be somewhere else soon. Time is ticking- we have 30-minutes! My sister suggested this place a little more than a block away from the historic post office on Merchant street. In fact, other eateries are in the lobby area of this building. One was super busy with the line out the door (sis said they were yum too, but time was an issue here), one had no one inside (ummm you know my golden rule), so we head straight to... SUSHI KAHUNA! I was immediately impressed how clean and straight it was. Not much ambiance, as it's more a take-out spot for business professionals and wannabe yuppies, but it was bright with about 3-4 efficiency tables. Time is ticking- we now have 26-minutes! The prices are on the board above the counter and I was told this place has some pretty yummy udon... Authentic & cheap! However, they also had a "curry special" going on too, so I got a small chicken curry over Japanese rice. It was only $5 and tax included! Downtown? What a deal! My sis ordered some sort of udon salad (sorry forget to take the pic). Her plate looked good too! The chicken curry definitely had that authentic curry taste (I could not detect any msg aftertaste which is a good sign) and the rice was nice & fluffy, but tbh even though it said "chicken" curry, I failed to see or taste any chicken. I did come across carrots and potatoes, but oddly no chicken. Did she accidentally give me a vegetarian version? Oh well, it was still good, but I'll try the udon next time. I noticed self-serve water with cups in the large refrigerator to the side, so I went the "Chang" route and poured us some lovely complimentary water! So yes, I recommend... SUSHI KAHUNA! This place really reminded me on those tiny eateries in busy Tokyo. The counter lady was nice & efficient and the "scoop to mouth" service was speedy too. I mean most patrons here are take-out orders on timed lunches, so yes these guys are speedy! We enjoyed our now 22-minutes lunch at one of the efficiency tables and caught up on life, grubbed away, and people watched... Sweet efficient 22-minutes lunch! Plus, it tasted good, too! Total damage for me? 5-bucks! I'll be back, but probably opt for some type of noodles next time! Hopefully I have 23-minutes on my next visit! OVERALL GRADE: 4.0-STARS! LIVE ALOHA... YELP REVIEW #386

Now curry every day!! (Used to be only M, W, F.) :D

Have eaten here twice, disappointed both times. First time I had the spicy ahi bowl. OK, not nothing to rave at. Like the poke at Ahi & Vegetable or their sister restaurant Ahi Lovers better. Second time had the must I and garlic chicken bento. Mitsubishi had no "good stuff" in them - one was supposed to be salmon and one ume. Without the sign I would never have known. The garlic chicken was cold, greasy, and made me feel ill. If you are tempted to eat here, keep walking through the arcade to Merchant Street, cross the street and eat at SuShi&BiBimBab.

And yes, here's my first "update" as part of the Yelp 365 challenge... Given that I come here so often, I think I have to give it more stars! Here's the things I've gotten for the most part: Curry set (small curry and rice + small plain udon) $5.50 (Curry on Monday and Friday only; if you go late, they usually run out) Udon set (small tankuki udon + 8 piece california roll) $5.50 (I don't think it's real crab but it's really tasty!) Chicken katsu bento: I forget how much it is but it's one of those prepacked under the heat lamp so once it runs out, it runs out Pork and chicken fried rice: $4.50 I think. I prefer the pork fried rice but I haven't seen it in a while. and the things I am waiting to try: The hamburger bento $5.50 for a big juicy hamburger patty on rice, gyoza, shumai and some other bento like things The chicken karaage and 2 musubi combo (i think this is Tuesday and Thursday only) You can eat in on one of the 4 tables or so but it's so tiny and people are constantly coming in and out so I always take out. Friendly folks, but never overly friendly so don't expect them to remember you, even when you go in twice a week! They are usually very fast but if there is a line sometimes they get overwhelmed (and I go get greek food or CGees...) Cash only. Yelp 365 Challenge #12/365 August 12, 2011

A friend recently introduced me to this place, and thankfully she did because otherwise I would have NEVER known about it. Tucked away in a little hallway that is accessible from either Merchant Street or King Street, this little jewel was a treasure we couldn't find even with a map. We used GPS and everything! Thankfully we ran into another friend who had already found the little hallway for us! Easiest way to describe it is that it is in the hallway next to Subway on King and Alakea. In any case we got there a little early in time to snag a table (that was really meant for 2 but we managed to squish 4 in there) and eat in. Udon sets vary from about $5-$6 and come with a mini udon with a choice of toppings and 8 pieces of California roll. Such a deal! The food came out VERY quickly too and there were even glasses of water you could help yourself to from the soda fridge. The udon soup was a bit sweet, but tasty! California roll is your standard Cali roll. Other options available were bentos under the heat lamps for grab and go lunches varying at about $4.75 for a Katsudon to ~$6-7 for fish bentos. All in all it was just a surprisingly great value and I would highly recommend this place to anyone that works in downtown and is looking for a cheap, tasty, and quick lunch.

I feel like people who review downtown places usually work downtown in an office, and use this yelp-time on the clock as an excuse not to do real work for a few minutes. Lol, so now that you all know exactly why I'm writing this, I love this place! Conveniently close to the office, cheap, and friendly (: I usually get the spicy bowl or the little cali rolls laying out by the register. I saw a couple of reviews saying the bowls were $5.50, they're actually $6.50 now. Still cheap though! If you work in the area (or even if you don't), check it out. Totally worth it. Now back to work (:
(4)Alysha K.
Best spicy ahi bowl I've tried so far, for just $5! Literally a hole in the wall and definitely a hidden gem. But great for lunch if you're in the downtown area. I don't know what they put in their spicy ahi but it's perfection. The consistency, the flavor, the right amount. And service is quick! What more could you ask for?? Only downfall...where do you park if you're not parked already??
(4)Sharon H.
Two words: Udon Salad! Sushi Kahuna is the place for a refreshing salad that fills you up but doesn't weigh you down. First, a bed of chopped romaine, then a generous layer of thick udon noodles, thin ribbons of wakame and sliced kitsune, then a smattering of red ginger and fried tempura dribbles... ok, there's a name for those leftover pieces of fried tempura batter, but I can't recall what it is! Let's just say "ono!" If you do take out, a light ponzu style dressing is served separately. Mix together and enjoy! $6.75 plus tax, served every day! Meanwhile, curry is only served on Mondays and Fridays, so get there early if you have a hunger for the curry rice, chicken katsu curry or curry udon, cause they go fast! My favorite udon set includes a bowl of plain udon (with one piece of kamaboko, sigh) and an 8-piece California roll. The servers are all polite and sweet, and service is quick. There's a handful of seating inside the tiny restaurant, but you'll need to go early since it gets crowded and there's little wiggle room. For take out ... place your order at the cash register, step to the side or back, then when you hear your order, signal where you are and they'll hand you the takeout bag. But, remember, check the takeout bag! :-)

I love eating here! They don't have much sushi, but their udon sets are cheap and pretty good for the price, especially because you get the udon and a side of 8 piece california roll. If you love curry, the best days to come are Mondays and Fridays for the curry udon sets. They have chicken curry and rice everyday, but the udon is much better. The udon salad is also very good, decent price and definitely fills you up. The spicy ahi bowl is good, not very spicy, definitely worth the $5.50 and the small fills me up. They used to have spicy salmon bowls on occasion, but i haven't seen that recently, not sure if they stopped that or not. They have bentos too, oyakudonburi, hamburger steak, etc., these run at $6.50 for a large bento. But those go quick if you aren't there early there isn't much left around 12:15. But they recently opened a new place in Pioneer Plaza called Okazuya Kahuna, I haven't been able to eat there yet, but I can't wait to try it.
(4)Doris D.
Still think this is a great Japanese fast food place with reasonable prices. I got the udon set with california roll for a flat $6. Nice!
(4)Anna F.
This is one of the few places in downtown that serve udon. A lot of customers order the udon set. It's a really good deal. For $5.25 you get a small udon and a 6 piece california roll. They also have a spicy ahi bowl which my co-workers love. Other items that I've tried and liked is the chirashi, deluxe chirashi, udon salad, and salmon skin roll. If you want a quick and inexpensive lunch, this is the place you want.
(5)Shuo S.
I work just a few blocks from this place so Sushi Kahuna is an awesome place to go to for lunch. The price is right too, at $5 for a spicy ahi bowl. They have your choice of white or brown rice, which is a great addition because I love the health benefits and I don't mind the texture (the brown rice here is pretty soft as well) The portions are just the right size for me for lunch, and the price can't be beat - it's $2 cheaper for a spicy ahi bowl here than it is at Ahi & Vegetable. The fish taste fresh, and the mom & pop feel of the place makes you feel like you can ask for something not on the menu and they'll make it for you.
(5)Jo Z.
The curry with chicken katsu is curry-licious, my favorite. They also have assorted musubi's, oyakodon, donburi, and bento's (karaage, salmon, hamburger, etc). Want something with noodles?? Their Udon sets are pretty yummy. Don't want it hot, their udon salad pretty filling as well.
(4)Ali K.
This place is so cheap and fast, and delicious! I get the udon sets. The udon tastes fresh, and not like some places where it tastes dried up like it was right out of the freezer. The udon in the set is very small, but perfect size for me. It comes with 8 piece california roll. The pieces are pretty mini, but they taste very good. The regular udon set is only $5; other types (curry, sansai, kitsune) are around $5.75-$6. They have other types of sushi and bowls. Most people seem to get the udon sets or spicy ahi bowls when I'm there. My friend got one of the mixed sushi sets and she said it was good. You can eat there (they serve you with regular bowls and such) or you can get it to go. There are only 4 tables inside and 2-3 outside and it is pretty crowded, so you are better off getting it to go, especially because that place gets really busy during the lunch rush. The service is really fast, but they did forget my order once. The location is convenient, right in that hallway through the building on Alakea and King with Subway at one end.
(4)Tiffinie K.
Great for lunch time if you work downtown (I got lost, as usual). The service was very fast. I ordered a kitsune udon set which came with udon and 8 piece California roll. Before I could sit down, the food was already being served. Maybe it was a a little too fast. Not only was the service fast, the food was cheap and pretty good. We went for lunch today at 11:30. If we got there a little later, there would have been no tables. Long lines, but at least it's fast.
(4)Zar A.
A tiny hole-in-the-wall establishment. They have daily sushi bowl specials, mostly just their spicy ahi bowls actually. Their spicy ahi bowl consists of just ahi with mayo and some spices and white rice. That's pretty much their special everyday. Recently, they added in a spicy ahi combo bowl. It's pretty much just like the spicy ahi bowl but with some lettuce... not a huge difference. Prices here used to be cheaper, $5 a bowl. But since 2 1/2 years ago, they have fluctuated. I think they were playing with the supply & demand market. At one point, their spicy ahi bowls got up to $7.50, but now it's down to $6. It's like playing with the stock market when you come each week. You come in Monday after the weekend and just wait to see what the price is for that week. Opened only for lunch. This is a good spot to just get a simple small lunch during your lunch time during work in Downtown. Miso soup can be purchased for a $1 with your spicy ahi bowl (or any purchase). Not a bad deal. They also sell chirashi bowl, udon bowl and other things I can't remember as I've only ordered their spicy ahi bowl.... Their price got me at $6.
(3)Darren S.
when in the mood for a light lunch, their poke bowls are the perfect size - you get your choice of white or brown rice... if not for fish, they also have a daily selection of bentos to choose from!
(4)Christie K.
Overpriced for quantity and quality. I had the large ikura and salmon don. The ikura and the salmon were not fresh. Ikura should never be sticky with a thick clear-whitish film and the salmon should not be sticky either. Something like this in LA would never cost more than 8 bucks and it'd actually be super fresh. never going here again.
(1)John T.
Good food and reasonable prices! My personal favorites are the wakame udon and the soba salad.
(5)Sara T.
I always have to make the hard decision of whether to come here or go to Good and Healthy for lunch. The udon is reasonably priced, consistently tasty with good texture, and always piping hot. The spicy ahi/ikura bowl is decent, but not as good as Ahi & Vegetable's, although it is slightly cheaper. The sushi is not the best, but it's cheap, large, and fast.
(4)Janice Y.
I love sushi! This place is delicious, affordable, fast, friendly, and has a nice array of menu items to choose from. I've been going once or twice a week for the past few years now. It is super convenient for those who are in the downtown area. I've eaten their curry udon, musubi set, bento, spicy ahi bowl, spicy ahi combo, and udon salad to name a few. When I'm feeling particularly in the mood for "healthy," I'll order the spicy ahi combo with brown rice. They have good, Japanese style brown rice. So good, it often runs out, so go early if you want brown! The combo comes with salad and creamy tasty dressing. The udon salad also feels healthy and is particularly refreshing on a hot day. The portions are a little smaller than other "to go" type sushi places but this is the type of place you end up paying for quality and not quantity. For the same price, I personally enjoy a lesser amount of spectacular food than a greater amount of mediocre food. My absolute top two items to order are: 1. Spicy ahi cut with a mini udon. Spicy ahi is fresh, creamy, delicious, perfect. The udon noodles are perfect and broth flavorful. 2. The salmon ikura don- so very fresh! The small size comes with sparklingly perfect ikura & 3 perfect slices of salmon. There are 4 small tables that can seat 1-3 people each. I much prefer eating sushi indoors but this place tends to get packed for lunch so getting it to go is an option. The BEST lunchtime sushi!
(5)Chris M.
Since I work in an air-conditioned office and am indoors for most of the day, I often crave a nice, hot, brothy lunch. Luckily, Sushi Kahuna is within perfect walking distance of our building. My co-workers and I have the udon set most of the time (mini udon + california roll). Can't go wrong for under $6! For an additional charge, they also allow you to customize your udon set - upgrade to a bigger size/type of udon, or even get spicy tuna instead of the california roll. LOVE this! Besides udon, they also have some ready-made bentos under the warmer - usually things like salmon, unagi, croquette. On certain days they offer a mini bento with 2 musubis and fried chicken. I've yet to try their curry, which they have only on Mondays and Fridays. Go early because they sell out quickly. Definitely one of the best places to go for a cheap & quick lunch! Just remember that it's cash only.
(4)Michelle M.
My co-worker and I were looking for a great place to grab a quick lunch and decided that we should walk across the street...It was a bit chilly, a bit rainy and Saimin is what we thought we were craving. So glad we found this place instead! What we had: -Kitsune Udon Set with Spicy Ahi Roll MINI $6.50 This was a GREAT deal for the price! The broth was delicious! I cant even begin to describe the flavors. It was the best Udon broth that I had in quite some time. The serving for a mini was more than enough, especially since I still had a 6 piece Spicy ahi Roll to take down as well. The service was prompt and polite. Definitely would have to make this a regular lunch option...its only a stone's throw from my office!
(4)Kaiulani K.
Got a $6 large spicy ahi bowl and waited only 1 minute during lunch hour. AMAZING! Will be back for more.
(4)Garett K.
Nestled within the bowels of a small downtown building is this hidden gem. First find the Subway on the corner of King and Alakea then go into the building and it'll be on your right. The other reviewers may rave about the spicy ahi bowl but there is only one thing I have ever gotten here and it is the Chicken Katsu Curry Rice (capitalized because it is that good). It is hands down the best katsu curry rice in downtown and second only to Coco Ichiban (fukujinzuke tips the scale) island wide. Be advised that this delectable dish is only available on Mondays. They may not give a lot of katsu but what they do give is quality. It's not that shoddy half-skin overly deep fried crap that some establishments would claim is chicken katsu. The curry itself also contains bits of chicken and has a very nice amount of spice which doesn't overpower it. Finally bits of carrot, onion, and corn also enhance the texture and taste of the curry and the amount of food in a large juuni ban (#12 as said by the cashier girl to the guy making the food) is enough to satisfy even my ravenous hunger. tl;dr - Best katsu curry rice in downtown. Only available on Monday.
(5)Matt A.
If you work or live in the downtown area, this is a cheap place to get your fill for Japanese food. Should you make an extra effort to go out of the way to come here because of the reviews on yelp? No.
(3)Maude L.
My favorite quick lunch place downtown - I'm here at least twice a week. Their udon sets are great, and their curry is bomb (rice bowl or udon bowl). Their ahi bowls are always very fresh. Prices are very reasonable, and the ladies that run the place are so nice, too.
(4)Scott H.
Spicy Ahi Bowl. This places version comes with thin slices of onion on top, thin slices of green onion, a lettuce leaf, and some wasabi. the Spicy ahi is good. scraped and chunked ahi, in a light mayo spicy sauce that is a good mild spicy. Ahi quality is top notch. Portions are a little small, and you only get the bowl for what you pay (no miso soup or small salad, aka - Ahi & Vegetable). I will be adding this spicy ahi bowl to my compliment of lunch venues. Recommend to anyone who is addicted to spicy ahi and spicy ahi bowls. 4 stars for kinda small portions and no credit card service!
(4)Scott J.
Stopped by for a quick lunch on my way back to Waikiki and and was really happy with Sushi Kahuna. I got the lunch bento, which had a bunch of different sushis. Everything was really fresh and delicious. It was a good mix. The service was also great. The woman who helped me was super-friendly and was happy to explain the menu and also tell me all about her time in Honolulu. I'd visit this place all the time if I lived here.
(4)Sara C.
This is my go to restaurant when I don't know what to eat downtown. Every time I go here I know I'm getting some fresh food, served up fast. I love their chicken katsu curry when they have it, or my other go to is the mini salmon bento 5.25. And since Ahi Vegetable is gone from the area I'll grab their spicy tuna bowl when I can't decide. Also a good add is their miso soup. Remember you can order brown rice if you like, but go early if you want one of their daily specials, sometimes they sell out.
(4)Diane H.
This is one of my favorite lunch spots. I originally found it for the churashi, which I miss. They haven't had it since their sushi chef went to Japan (which seems like eons ago!) However, I still absolutely love the udon sets. The price is good, and it's a small udon and sushi roll, which is not too much food. I actually feel energetic after lunch, rather than like taking a nap because lunch was too heavy. I can't be the only one, because at lunch, this place is packed!
(5)Shane F.
Sushi Kahuna has thee best chicken katsu curry on the island "Ju Ni Ban". Only available on Mondays though. I have to describe it to give you a better picture. The curry looks like traditional Japanese curry, but once you taste it you know there is more too it than that. First you notice there is a slight spicy hint to it. Then you look and see the large carrots, onions, and my favorite corn. Also nice juicy chunks of chicken are also mixed in. Moving on to the chicken katsu. First let me tell you they have a limited amount of katsu so coming late is very sad. There was actually a time when I ordered the last Katsu curry and my friend who was behind me didn't get anything and almost hurt me haha. The katsu is definitely home made grade A pieces of chicken. The big difference between this chicken katsu and anywhere else is the just the amount of work you can tell is put behind it. The chicken has no fat or hard cartilage area's these are good pieces of chicken, Second the breading is perfect not that oily stuff its all made before hand so its not steaming hot i think though that just says how good the katsu is even room temperature the katsu taste excellent. Last the rice, you a good place is when they don't buy the same rice that everyone else has. I'm not certain but i believe that the rice they use is just a little bit different from what you or I buy from the store. This is one of y first posts, but i have to say as soon as i can i will post a picture of this awesomeness. I hope you enjoyed my review and i look forward to posting more because i love to eat.
(5)Michelle L.
SPICY AHI BOWL! You can't beat the price for $5 but it's not the biggest either. A buck more will get you a salad as well. The portions are just right; we really shouldn't be eating so much food anyway! The spicy ahi is similar to Ahi and Vegetable so it's yummy. The onions on top was a great touch. The prices for the other items are very reasonable too. I really want to try their udon set with some sort of sushi roll. It was like $5.50 or something ridiculously low lol. It's in the same alley way as It's Good and Healthy Cafe. I heart downtown and it's offerings :)
(4)Asako O.
Sushi Kahuna in downtown Honolulu is a tiny Japanese restaurant that offers a variety of bentos and sushi, udon salad, spicy ahi bowl, curry, croquette and udon at reasonable prices. They are located in a hallway where you can enter either from King Street or from Merchant Street. Make note as this place can be quite busy with the lunch time crowd. With limited seating available inside and outside, it may be best to order for takeout. As I browsed through their ready made bentos and sushi, I came across a salmon bento which looked good with white rice and two side dishes. As soon as I picked up the bento, the cashier was anxious to ring up my order. Very quick service. The salmon was just the right portion and tasted good although it was a bit dry. The two side dishes, pickled vegetables and seaweed, were tasty and was a nice compliment to the salmon.
(3)Dennis D.
nice food with large size especially ones with rice. ramen is not the best but the Udon is nice. kimchi is not too fresh and cold. chicken is a little bit too sweet! price is really fair and I would recommend others to go!
(3)Mark G.
Decided I'd take a yelp recommendation and walk an extra block and try this place. It's obvious that the quality of their fish is very good. The portions are on the small side but the food is quite good.
(4)Daflowa A.
Udon set with california roll is so reasonably priced at $5! My favorite thing to grab from here.
