Located on King Street a little bit before Mccully if you're going east. There's a small parking lot that can fit about 10 cars. If you get a stall, I suggest you reverse park. The food was very delicious. I had an assortment of sushi and other side dishes. The price matched the quality and presentation of the food. Service was fast, but it wasn't very busy. The food came out at a decent rate and the server was friendly. We were often asked if we needed anything else. Four star. Would visit again.

Hole in the wall joint on the left side on S. King Street. Parking available on the street or for $3 at Central Pacific Bank parking lot on the corner of McCully & S.King across Jack n Box. We arrived around 7:00 pm - half our party went inside to get a table. No street parking so CPB we went. Once we got inside of resto (aka restaurant) we were greeted and found our table - no wait for table which was nice. Place is small but larger than Mario Bistro. Staff friendly and service good. We all had the all you can eat Shabu Shabu. But we shared a variety of pre meal dishes such as Eel, Toro, Hamachi, and Salmon Sushi. Pieces of fish on larger side - melted in my mouth - so fresh and tasty! Then we had the mini tempura - 2 pieces shrimp and 2 pieces of veggie. Prepared well and no oily aftertaste. Next we shared the fried fish flounder agedashi tofu. The bones were edible - it was like salted chips but with a tolerable and tasty fish taste. AT was so good and sauce not too sweet. Finally we had the spicy sausage with sauerkraut. Different and mouth poppin. Overall, this place was a great first experience and gives true meaning to you pay for what you get!

As much as I love eating Japanese food, my sole reason for visiting Sushi Bistro Shun was to check out their all you can eat Shabu Shabu special. Priced at $25, this is one of the better buffet deals for quality Japanese food that you'll find on this island. Although the shabu shabu broth is not really flavored other than a piece of dried konbu, the quality of the meat is undeniable. Sliced paper thin, the marbled pieces of meat with specks of fat are just so good with the house ponzu dipping sauce. What I love about this buffet is that you are not obligated to order a veggie platter every time you request another platter of meat. All in all, our group consumed 3 heaping platters of meat to only one platter of veggies. While I did enjoy their shabu shabu immensely, my next visit to SBS will be to try their all you can eat sukiyaki which is also priced at $25 per person. For any carnivore lovers out there looking to satisfy your meat fix while not breaking the bank at an expensive steakhouse, Sushi Bistro Shun is a place worth checking out.

SHABU: Super good! "Are you gonna shabu?" I never knew "to shabu" was a verb! But it's super tasty & a bomb deal with all-you-can-eat. KOBOCHA: The pumpkin special was very very tasty. SUSHI: Hmmm, well I had the Honeymoon roll based off someone else's review..It looked promising with uni on top, but the uni tasted like saliva honestly. The tekka maki was good. I will have to go back to try their other stuff because my friends love it here. SERVICE: Excellent!

I've been here several times now. The food is consistently very good...tasty, fresh, interesting. But the service has gotten slower and slower. The other night the restaurant was maybe half full and it took a several requests to get a refill on our sake, then a very long time before our check was brought to the table. Perhaps they were short staffed, but there was no explanation nor an apology. I'd like to give it 4 stars, but service is important and counts for a lot.

I've been to Sushi Bistro many times over the course of 5 years, and it's the all you can eat shabu shabu or sukiyaki for $25 that keeps me coming back. I personally like the sukiyaki over the shabu shabu. Both come with plates of mushrooms, green onions, cabbage, tofu, and noodles. There's not much to say about the meat since it's, ugh...unlimited! Keep in mind that the regular (non all you can eat) order of shabu shabu is basically $1 cheaper, which doesn't make much sense since I know many of the guys out there can easily consume 1 plate of beef by themselves. Cons: parking is kind of tight. Also, shabu shabu orders and sukiyaki orders cannot be ordered ont he same physical table. (i.e. I order shabu shabu and my friend orders sukiyaki, they will require us to sit on two different tables).

Sushi Bistro is great! The owner is super cool and super funny! Not to mention a great sushi chef! They have all you can eat Shabu Shabu which is delicious! I never order more than one plate of meat, however, because it's sooo filling! Every once in a while I have a craving to go to Sushi Bistro and always leave satisfied. Only sad thing is prices went up recently. Shabu Shabu used to be $25 now it's $29. Well worth it, but just because the prices went up 14% doesn't mean I eat 14% more :( Great service too!

My friends and I have heard about this place for a long time but we have never gone. There were rumors of an elusive $25 all you can eat shabu shabu but we had yet to prove that it was real. My friends are shabu snobs so of course they felt that all you can eat can't be that good. This place proved them wrong. I loved the fact that there was a choice of one appetizer with the all you can eat. I chose the Cali roll. My friends ate the salmon roll. I was not expecting sushi so this was a pleasant surprise. Every 1st round is a plate of paper thin ribeye (I believe) and a vegetable plate. The meat is beautifully marbled for all you can eat and lots of fresh veggies. The broth is a simple piece of dried kombu. Nothing overpowering. The sauces were simple, Ponzu, Soy and Sesame. My friend ordered minced garlic on the side to mix with the sesame. Believe me, it takes the sauce to a whole 'nother level. The meat tasted even better when there was garlic. So simple, yet so great. I was very happy with everything. I believe we ate about four plates of meat and three plates of veggies. Service was great and very helpful. Only thing I wish that it was free refills. Note to restaurant, if you want people to eat less, give them free refills. If you don't care, fine with me. More food for me to eat. Parking is weird and it might be hard if there is none left. Overall I highly recommend this place. Shabu Shabu, Found. Mission accomplished. Sukiyaki, your next!!!

My boyfriend and his family come here ALL the time. I haven't gone with them the times they go but I did the other night, and it was awesome! My boyfriend ordered the sushi set A which is an sesame deal. You get about 12 pieces of nigiri, 2 pieces tamago, and a California roll all for $18. That's a deal!! If you go during happy hour (530-630 or again at 930) they offer a deluxe box which comes with miso soup, salad, rice, shoyu chicken, and your choice of either a California roll or tekka roll. You also get a choice of either assorted tempura (so good!), tonkatsu, Saba, hamburger steak, and a few other choices. I am telling you right now that their hamburger steak is off the hook!! It is so juicy and tender, topped off with daikon that totally goes with the sauce. It is THE BEST Japanese hamburger steak I have ever had!! And I've had a lot of hamburger steak... They also have an all you can eat shabu shabu or sukiyaki menu as long as everyone on the table is ordering it as well, for $28 a person. Totally worth it for the shabu shabu because they give you not only meat and vegetable, they include lobster balls, fresh clams, and fresh scallops!! The waitresses and waiters are always friendly, and the cooks are amazing! Definitely need to check this place out if you love sushi and Japanese food, if you haven't already!!
(5)Pinky F.
I love sushi. This place can do it too but but but.......well, its expensive for what you get. If it were as great as Sasabune, then I wouldn't make a bad write up. Its just the value for what you get isnt there. I cant put AOK because it just wasn't. Good people but food is not up to the price point.
(2)Kelvin K.
I always enjoy eating sushi and other Japanese appetizers at Sushi Bistro! I especially enjoy sitting at the sushi bar! the sushi chef is very engaging and funny! but more so, his skill as a sushi chef is excellent! his special "Benkei style" hamachi and aburi salmon sushi are FANTASTIC!!! the wait help are always friendly and quick to serve your orders. SEE YOU TOMORROW!

This place is open late (till 12am on most days), and I was lucky enough to find it when my gf and I were looking for grinds after watching a play. LOCATION It's on King Street on the left side, directly across from Alan Wong's. Drive by SLOW and look for the SUSHI BISTRO sign (pretty big) because once you see the sign, you'll need to turn into their little strip of a parking lot. The turn is difficult to see because there are parked cars obstructing the view. Even with my awesome reflexes, I missed the driveway and had to reverse to turn in. PARKING You'll have fun trying to get out of the little strip of parking with diagonal stalls. My car is on the smaller side, so it wasn't too difficult, but if you've got a big truck or SUV, good luck. FOOD The food is pretty good here BUT not for sushi. If you're looking for great sushi, just go to Sushi Masa. I wouldn't come here for the raw fish sushi (which is ironic) because Sushi Masa has similar pricing for TWICE the amount of fish. I was very sad when I ordered my maguro, toro and aji and got such a small piece that just covered the rice. I couldn't even appreciate the fish because there was so much rice. I wish I hadn't ordered any of it because those 3 pieces set me back $15. The uni and unagi were delicious, tho. Best items I ordered. Next time, I'll just stick to those. Keep in mind that Sushi Bistro's sushi prices only reflect the cost of ONE PIECE! The garlic steak was pretty good but a little dry. It comes with roasted garlic slices on top and some veggies. I didn't feel like it was worth the $17 though, more like $15. Miso Butterfish was also pretty good but watch out for the bones. The specials are great deals. ATMOSPHERE The interior is quite pleasant. I think they have tatami style rooms, but we were seated at the regular tables. The tatami rooms looked very hip. Grade A for nice ambiance. WAIT HELP There were 3 waitresses that night but I guess they have a rule in place where the waitress that helps you IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL HELP YOU even if you stare down another one. It was quite frustrating because the other waitresses would just walk pass while looking at us and the waitress that was helping me was off doing something else. I finally had to get up and ask her for the bill. Ridiculous considering that there was only 1 other party in the entire restaurant by this time. Other than that, the waitress was very helpful, friendly and cheery. :D OVERALL My GF really liked this place. She prefers it to Izakaya Gaku and Tokkuri Tei. I'm happier at Tokkuri Tei, but I don't mind the occasional dine here. I'm not craving for it though.

I went with a few friends and seemed to sample almost everything on the menu. All was fantastic and flavorful, the fish was divine and the sake bombs to seal the night was perfecto. All and all a fabulous dinner .

I don't know how I haven't been to this place before. Shabu shabu was awesome, but with three guys eating we had to order a lot. Good quality meat for the shabu, i love shabu veggies as well. Abalone dynamite was so delicious but I would have never eaten it if someone hadn't ordered it for me so you all have to try it. It is a little rich but well worth it. Chuutoro...sooooo good. Unagi nigiri - wow it was delicious and the pieces were so big I couldn't believe it Tempura Ice Cream - So bad for you, but so good at the same time. The bill was expensive but my hyung paid for it :p Be prepared to spend some money for some good food.

We were driving around looking for Izakaya Gaku and thanks to my awesome directions I couldn't find it. I was getting crankier by the minute because of my empty stomach so when I saw Sushi Bistro on the side of the street, I pulled in. Thank god for my sucky direction skills because I never would have tried this place! I almost cried when I walked in because I felt so nostalgic with the real Japanese izakaya feeling. The fish was so fresh but a little expensive. The nigiri were sold per piece...not two pieces. We got Maguro, Aji, Tai, Sake, butter scallops...really brought me back to Japan. The staff were so cute and Japanese. I think our waiter didn't even speak English which I liked even better! I will definitely be back!

I've been here only twice, but after the second visit I'll be coming back over and over again. The first time I came to this restaurant was for an all-you-can-eat sukiyaki going away party. I was impressed with the $25ish pricetag, and the fact that the restaurant insisted on giving TOO MUCH of everything, instead of being chang and doling out tiny portions with the hope that you'd give up (ahem, Makino Chaya). You get this giant pan, and this slab of pork fat and then you cook some onions and stuff before adding the broth. Then you throw all the amazing stuff in: shiitake, tofu, noodles, etc. Overall, it was well-worth the price, and if you're a sukiyaki fan, I'd suggest you give them a try.. NOW, the second time I visited was with a friend from MA, and we focused solely on the sushi and izakaya-style pupus. How could I have overlooked all of this amazing stuff?! We had rich, fatty pork kakuni, along with a couple other goodies, over glasses of Hakkaisan. The sushi guy made the night even more enjoyable, as he joked around with his coworkers and regular customers, yet at the flick of a wrist he put out some of the best sushi I've had in Hawaii. I will warn you that a single oo-toro nigirizushi will cost you $14. Uni, and other items are similarly priced, but if you're in an indulgent mood and are willing to take the financial hit, DO IT. It's a revelation in your mouth. My friend asked me if I ever tasted monkfish liver, and my other friend google.com informed me that it was called "ankimo," and I had no idea what it was. What kine Japanese am I? The sushi guy said "OF COURSE we have ankimo" and put out a little dish of two bright orange slices of glory, garnished with nori, tobikko and oroshi. I'll wrap up this rave already: go to Shun for some of the best sushi available, sit at the bar, choose your amazing pupus (and order ankimo!), and have some sake. You'll go back over and over and over again.

Never been here until just recently. It is amazing to think it has been here for 12 years, and I had never noticed it. A friend dragged me out, and this is his favorite spot. It is well above average. The fish was fresh and good. The service was also pretty fast, and I like the fact that real deal Nihon Jin work here (if they were locals they are good at faking it). It has it's own atmosphere, and is different from anywhere else I have been. Real comfortable like. I had Hamachi and Salmon as I normally do, which were solid. The negitoro was delicious. The hirame was probably the best I had compared to other spots I go. I will be back, and I want to try more of their fried foods and nabe.

I am a shabu-shabu fan and was excited to learn about Sushi Bistro Shun's all-you-can-eat shabu shabu special. I had read many reviews about this restaurant and they were all very positive. My husband and I visited this restaurant on August 6, 2010. The service was prompt and very friendly. The atmosphere was clean and roomy. We ordered the shabu shabu special and was pleasantly surprised to find our table ready for our shabu shabu experience. The vegetables (lots of cabbage, a couple of shiitake mushrooms and some green onions), tofu and noodles were beautifully plated. The meat (rib eye, as stated on the menu) was artfully plated. After swishing the meat in the broth, and eagerly dipping it into the sesame sauce, I was disappointed by the lack of flavor. I tried the meat plain and it was bland. The sesame sauce was also bland. I didn't appreciate this shabu shabu dish. I might come back to try other items on their menu but I will definitely pass on their shabu shabu dish. I really love shabu shabu and I found theirs disappointing.

I'm addicted to this place. My friends and I get the shabu shabu and we've never been disappointed. $25 for all you can eat is a great deal especially when it comes with a small appetizer and your choice of sushi roll. You're not able to choose the appetizer, but I kinda like that. The first time we came we got meatballs; the second time was edamame; etc. You never know what you're gonna get, but it's always good. Also note that the appetizer and sushi are NOT "all you can eat", but who cares about these when the shabu shabu is what counts in this deal. The service is fast, especially if you make reservations and indicate shabu shabu ahead of time. By the time you get there, they have it all ready for you at the table. The only down side (depending on how busy it is) is the parking. It's one way in and out, so it can be difficult to to get out of. Recommend reversing into the stall so exiting is easy. The liquor selection is also not that great since it's not a full bar and the sake is pretty standard. I tried a carbinated lemon liquor drink (can't remember the name) and didn't like it. Also tried one of the premium sake, but didn't like that either. The wine was ok. However, where they lack in easy parking and good drinks, they make up for in authentic Japanese food and excellent service. Conveniently located on King Street after Gyotaku on your left hand side. Overall this is a great place and my #1 choice for shabu shabu. I stop in about twice a month and will definitely continue my patronage.
(5)Tania P.
Well, I went back and got the regular (not all you can eat) shabu shabu... I was SO disappointed! One order ($23) only came with ten slices of meat. Yes, I counted. It also only came with two sauces (one goma and one ponzu) and they wanted to charge one dollar for each additional dish of sauce. Sorry I don't share MY ponzu!!! They also charged me $1.50 for a bowl of rice. WTH!!! If you come here you HAVE to get the all you can eat. I was a complete fool to let my dining partner talk me into getting a regular order! We also ordered a vegas roll, the most expensive specialty roll on their menu... omg was it nasty! I'm still giving Sushi Bistro 4 stars because I think the shabu is great...just make sure you get the all you can eat, where you get unlimited ponzu, meat and veggies, and don't charge for rice!
(4)Kimberly C.
If you're looking for a great all you can eat shabu shabu place, then you should definitely check this place out. You cook the meat and veggies in just water rather than cooking it in a flavored soup like so many other shabu shabu restaurants. But, it's worth it if you want to eat as much as you want!
(4)Wendy I.
We went for the all-you-can eat Shabu Shabu. $25.95 (everyone on your table has to eat it). You have a choice of shabu shabu or sukiyaki. It comes with a little salad and a roll of sushi of your choice (tekka, salmon-avocado, california, or veggie). The sushi OK (wasn't rolled very tight). Shabu Shabu was very one dimensional. You boil the food traditional style in just water and a thick piece of konbu. They provide you with dipping sauces (peanut and ponzu). Ponzu was more sour than most ponzu sauces I've had. Veggies you get are: won bok, rice noodles, green onions, shiitake mushrooms, and tofu. Only meat you get is thinly sliced rib eye. We got our money's worth (non all-you-can eat is like $23 so I wouldn't recommend going that route), but probably wouldn't have the shabu shabu again. A loooong time ago like around 2001/2002, they had an all-you-can eat special for less than $30. Now *that* was a deal. Went there at least half a dozen times before they stopped that.
(3)Derrick N.
I've been to Shun's many times and the food is very consistent. The fish is fresh. I normally go with a large group and reserve one of the rooms. It's a little on the pricy side but totally worth it. The parking sucks, if you drive too fast on King St you will pass it. The wafu salad is the bomb. Try the spicy tofu soup, and sushi pizza. I know sounds weird but it's really good. Man, I miss Hawaii.
(5)Love S.
I realized there is life after yelp. But I notice I have a problem with visiting the same restaurants week after week. Is it just me or is the food crap in Hawaii? I'm feeling uninspired. First time here was incredible, second time was alright, after the 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 15th time. I'm in desperate need of JAL ticket. First Class please. Any sponsors out there? I'm dreaming about the cherry blossoms. Alright, this place is 4 stars. By Hawaii's standards anyway.
(4)Chi-Hye M.
All i have to say is....the UNAGI melts in your mouth...... *DROOL*
(5)Emily B.
This is my fav shabu shabu. My ex and I would eat sparsely throughout the day, workout and go there and tear up the all-you-can-eat for $25. So worth it, but I only gave 4 stars cause the service SUCKS! Sometimes we'd have to ask for stuff twice, which in my book is 2 too many. I think they noticed how fast we ate and tried to stall so we'd get full and quit asking for another plate of meat. Haha!!
(4)Bobbi A.
I love me some sushi bistro ! The thing I love about this place is the food is always good we eat here at least twice a month. The staff is friendly and the owner is funny and a great sushi chef. Parking is sometimes a problem so go early.
(5)Joshua C.
Wow, two weeks since my last review. I may finally have my Yelp addiction under control (I didn't say I was cured, nor do I want to be). It's weird writing again, it hasn't been that long you say, two weeks, how addicted were you? Very. But now my time's preoccupied with preparing to move to Portland, OR (sometime in September). Packing boxes, selling property, resigning from my job, hanging out with everyone, and eating at all my favorite places (twice). For those who care....don't worry there's still more to write about here on this island (have barely scratched the surface of things to do and places to purchase cool stuff). I imagine I'll find myself on a rainy overcast day like this one, sitting in front of this same computer, getting all nostalgic (btw in case it's hard to tell I'm stoked about moving, just being a bit facetiously sopopratic urbandictionary.com/defi… )..... Well, one place that I'll miss is a place most people probably miss while driving down King street. That's what happens when you start a business on a one way street and face your entrance away from the direction the driver's are coming from. Not that this keeps those in the know away, Sushi Bistro Shun's a place worth tracking down and gives you that "discovered" satisfaction when you finally get there (look for an unassuming white building, left side, a little before you reach McCully). It's an Izakaya that's been around for awhile now. Not as upscale as Gaku or Imanas, not as cramped as Tokkuri Tei, Shun's got a laid back style all it's own. Like a CD filled with good tracks, the menu here has many hits and no memorable misses. Start with an Unagi Nigiri (you'll want to order two, but trust me start with one). Try an assortment of Kushi Yaki (Things cooked on a stick). Get a sushi platter. Some Dynamite. Wafu Steak. I love Tokkuri Tei, but I prefer to linger at Shun or Gaku cause if I'm going to spend hours just chilling it's nice not to be cramped. While the culinary scene is off the chain in Portland, who knows if I'll be able to track down an Izakaya that suits my predilections. Oh well, if not there's always nostalgia (pre-moving in this case) or oil inflation priced tickets home.

I'll start off with the positives: the shoyu pork, agedashi tofu and sun chirashi were delicious. Disclaimer: we did not have the all you can eat shabu shabu or sukiyaki that everyone raves about. But this restaurant gets 3 stars because the service was not the greatest and some of the food (ie sushi) was not that exciting. It took forever for us to be greeted and to get our water. Our water was not refilled the entire meal, we had to ask 3 different servers for a take out box, our table was not cleared at the end...etc. I might consider going back just to try the shabu shabu but the crappy service was a turn off for me
(3)K K.
Chu Toro, salmon sashimi, spicy tuna roll was so good!! I love!! All of the fishes were melt in your mouth goodness!!
(5)Noelani C.
So I must say service here is only good when Moose is working. If he isn't working, the new girl servers are horrible. Only dine here if Moose is working. He gives the best service so I don't mind tipping 50%. He belongs in a fine dining restaurant because his service matches excellent service as if he was a server at La Mer in Halekulani. He pays attention to detail and if you order sukiyaki (not all you can eat) he will start it off and cook the beginning portion for you. Sushi and sashimi here is delicious and always good cuts!! I will dine here in the future.

Sushi Bistro Shun is located on the left side of king street, not too far passed the Times Supermarket. I have passed by this place for years, but for some reason never stopped to check it out. One night when we were walking by, I decided to look at the menu they had displayed outside. We agreed them menu looked good and the prices weren't bad at all. So we decided to finally give it a try! The Grub. [[ WASABI DORI $3.50 ]] yelp.com/biz_photos/sush… Don't get scared when you see the words wasabi, this dish wasnt spicy at all! I was amazed how they were able to catch the wasabi flavor without the spice! [[ TONKOTSU UDON $9 ]] yelp.com/biz_photos/sush… I loved the broth for the udon and the noodles were cooked just they way I like them, not soggy but soft and still chewy. [[ BACON WRAPPED ENOKI $3.50 ]] yelp.com/biz_photos/sush… You really cant go wrong with this dish! Anything wrapped in bacon is always a good idea. [[ SPECIAL TSUKUNE $3.75 ]] yelp.com/biz_photos/sush… This was delish! I like tsukune and I like eggs, so why not eat them together! So simple but genius!! [[ AGEDASHI TOFU $8 ]] yelp.com/biz_photos/sush… The agedashi tofu was good. I personally felt like they put too much of the dried bonito flakes, but that's just a personal preference. Overall: I definitely want come back so I can try the AYCE shabu shabu and fresh sushi!

My all time favorite Japanese restaurant! This place offers a variety of Japanese cuisine, it is literally like a one-stop location for all your Japanese cuisine cravings! I tried pretty much everything except for the shabu-shabu. The beef tataki, diced beef, and gyu-tongue is a must have on every visit. The sushi and chirashi is top quality! No matter what izakaya (ala-carte) items you order, you can never go wrong! The sushi bar is a great experience. The main sushi chef is very friendly, always keeping you engaged in interesting conversations. Be nice to him and he may bring you some complimentary appetizer/dishes for you to sample. The service @ the sushi counter is top notch! No matter how busy or crowded they are, they will always cater to the customers at the counter top first. The wait time for any single piece sushi is like less than a minute upon ordering. As other reviewers have mentioned; the dine in service isn't necessarily the greatest, but it isn't the worst either. I've came here about a dozen times and I always see a different group of staff each time. Seems like they hire Japanese exchange students from Tokai university, UH, KCC, or wherever, because they're usually gone by the next semester or so.. So that being said, don't let the highlights of other reviewers regarding "bad service" stop you from dropping in! Sushi bar 5 stars! Dining in (service) 4 stars! Overall 4.5! I am look forward to my next visit to satisfy my hunger with variety of izakaya and chef's Omakase.

Walk, ride or drive by this place all the time just never went into it. So we decided hey let's check the place out.... Cool interesting place nice decor but I've been told it's pretty much the same as the last restaurant that was here. The food was pretty good not overall outstanding but good nothing to complain about, our water cups never got a refill, although the food came out quick waiting to get the check took forever since the waiter never came around we finally had to flag him down, if we had gotten a refill on our water and at least checking on us I would have given them another star but that is what it is for our experience..

I took my wife for an 2nd experience at Sushi Shun Bistro for some nigiri sushi and sake. The whole experience was awesome!! We were the only ones at the sushi bar and itamae san Ben was so nice to us. Whether it was our personality or the stars and galaxies were aligned tonight, we clicked. Itamae Ben-san was so nice to us. The sushi was so nice and he introduced some small sample/ tapa dishes to try. What itamae san would do this to a first time customers??!! My wife and I enjoyed the experience and were soooo full. We didn't expect much but sometimes others treat us unexpectedly good as they want to be treated as mutual respect towards each other. With that said, we became friends. I guess our personalities clicked on ALL 8 cylinders!! Domo arigatoo Ben San and to your staff!! As you say, see you tomorrow!! But we say, mata raishuu!! Mahalo for the sushi experience!!

My boyfriend knows sushi is my favorite food and although it is pricey he always takes me to all the best places...Here is one of the places, this is a hole in the wall spot right in front of S King st and you may miss it if you aren't looking for it. Came here on a weeknight and the place wasn't pack, but the place is small...it's a very homey feeling with specials all on the wall and a sushi bar right when you walk in. The waitresses and waiters here are very nice. The furniture and carpet is outdated but who cares when the food is great. Prices are a little pricey but the quality and semi quantity of the food makes it okay. We got the sashimi platter (not sure the name) but there were salmon, hamachi, taco (octopus), ahi and calamari....alll fresh fish and good big cuts.We also got the hamachi roll which was really good and their wasabi taco so friken good! This was the place that I was introduced to taco wasabi and this was the place that got me hooked to that! Basically it's just raw taco (octopus) with wasabi....they don't add enough wasabi so we always have to ask for extra wasabi on the side and we just mixed it right in.

Gotta agree with some of the reviews commenting about slow service. Not sure how to justify me & my husband spending nearly two hours there when it's not even a fine dining restaurant. They sat us on a deuce table hidden in the corner so we were kind of ignored that I had to flag down or make eye contact with server #1 to place our order. I asked her to bring us extra napkins and waited. She had gotten busy so I had to ask server #2 and she was on top of it, brought the napkins right away. Somehow server #2 started taking over and tending to us because again server #1 kept forgetting us and waited on the other tables. It was only when we were all done eating, fumbling our thumbs that server #1 finally came and asked if we wanted our tab. Quick to collect money I see but slow to serve our table. Hah! Go figure. Other than the service, the food was exceptional. We ordered the AYCE shabu shabu, course A selection. Rib Eye was very tender and tasty with the dipping sauce. It was so delicious that we had two plates! Thus, 3 stars given for that only.

This was my husband and I first time here. We had the all you can eat sukiyaki. The soup was very delicious. They gave us a wholé platter of meat and veggies. This was too much for us to finish. We also ordered a spider roll it was very good and the Nori was fresh. It was rolled to perfection. I hate getting sushi that isn't rolled correctly and falls apart. This one was perfect. The atmosphere is of a quaint Japanese restaurant. Very clean and the waitresses were very friendly and attentive. My husband and j will definitely be returning.

A favorite neighborhood gem! Sushi Bistro Shun is a smaller restaurant located on King Street; if you'd blink, you'd miss it! We love coming here for the small plates to share...after, variety is the spice of life! We have our favorites: hiyayako (cold tofu), Kumamoto oysters with ponzu (when available), munchi salad with sesame seed dressing, bacon wrapped asparagus, garlic teba (chicken wing), hirame usuzukuri, and arabiki sausage! They always have a specials board with a dozen or so selections for the day. They have shabu shabu and sukiyaki! BONUS: they welcome single orders! So many restaurants require a minimum of orders but Sushi Bistro Shun offers single servings for those who just have to satisfy their craving. The sushi bar is always fun to sit at as there are always characters sitting, eating, and drinking the night away. The private rooms are great for small parties and provide a little more quiet for those who enjoy a good conversation. Parking in the lot can be a little tight so hopefully you'll luck out with street parking right in front!

I visited Sushi Bistro Shun in late May with my friend and her husband. It was my first time been here. We ordered shabu shabu, sashimi and ice cream tempura. Vegetables were fresh, the quality of meat was great. Sashimi was good, too. The greeting from chef was spacial at this place. The chef didn't say Thank you very much, please come next time but "See you tomorrow!" I like this.

Cute place. Didn't know that this place was here but the food is pretty good and service is helpful with the food! Wednesday is lady's day and there is a deal on the Shabu Shabu/ Sukiyaki all you can eat.
(4)Amy S.
I have yet to find a better place who makes california roll (8 pieces). The crab and rice are fresh melts in your mouth. Food is ALWAYS good! I've been here at least 8 times, never a complaint on food. Will be back. Small and perfect, not too crowded.
(5)Kehau B.
All you can eat shabu shabu! Need I say more!? lol Also, on Wednesday nights it's ladies night, price is around $20. Price is around $25 per person and worth it! Literally all you can eat and the service is awesome. Every time I have gone there's no wait.. during the week.. Not sure about weekends. The meat and the veggies is good and both all you can eat. The only thing you have to pay extra for is the ponzu and daikon.. Which is like $1... If you want to gorge yourself in shabu shabu for a good price this is hands down the best place to go to! I have gone to every shabu shabu place and this is the best! (: enjoy!

Sushi is excellent. Spider roll was delicious. Our 3 year old shared everything with us.

If you love authentic Japanese food, then Sushi Bistro Shun is an excellent choice for you. I have been to this restaurant many times over the course of 3 years. The restaurant is small, casual, and provides a few sectioned off rooms for privacy (if needed). The service is good, and the food wait is average. However, keep in mind, majority of the servers speak English, just not fluently. Although parking is free, there are a limited number of stalls, but there is street parking. Sushi Bistro Shun has a sushi bar as well. Their sushi is freshly made and delicious. The price range is reasonable, affordable, and well worth it. This place has a variety of really unreal tasting foods. They are well known for the all you can eat, shabu shabu with ponzu sauce for dipping. The beef is thinly sliced and cooks quickly in the nabe (pot). Priced at $30 pp. The soft shell crab, one of my must order favorites, is a shell less crab that will absolutely melt in your mouth. The deep fried flounder fish is fabulous. Amazingly, every single bone of the flounder fish is edible, crunchy, and so tasty. Another favorite is the asparagus-bacon wrap. It is to die for. The menu also consists of teishokus such as, unagi, tempura, tonkatsu etc. These three are delicious. The sushi is very nice, fresh and delicately fabulous. I usually order the Uni (sea urchin). Sushi lovers will no doubt be back for more. You must end with their very interesting dessert called tempura ice cream. This comes with 5 pieces of a round scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, rolled in a tempura batter, then deep-fried. It's served crispy and hot on the outside with a side scoop of azuki (red beans) beans sprinkled with a green tea sugar combo. Overall, I 100% recommend this restaurant to those who love authentic Japanese food. I would suggest making reservations a day in advance. They are located at 1914 S King Street in Honolulu. My every experience here at the Bistro Shun Restaurant was honestly nothing short of amazing. Bon appetite!

Best sukiyaki ever! Service is good as well!! We went to two other restaurants today and both of them were sold out. We ended up to this place and felt very lucky that we chose to come here!
(5)Cat W.
Definitely a place to go if you want GOOD sushi and other varieties. Not fancy on interior, but more traditional, low-key. Chef Benkei is welcoming and energetic. No loud annoying music, quality of food is excellent. We like the selections at the sushi bar, my personal favorite DESSERT: Tempura Ice Cream. If you don't want to be wooed by great atmosphere and sub-standard food, check this place out. A jewel in the area for tasty Japanese at good prices.
(5)Doug W.
Went there on a Saturday night, and the place was popping. The meat for the sukiyaki is decent, the veggies fresh. Can't comment on the sushi, because they screwed up the order 3 times and never got what I ordered. Also, never got more than one fill up of water, and had to chase them down to get another drink ordered. So... if you need a shabu shabu fix (which if you didn't know is an onaonomatopoeia for the sound your meat will make sashaying through the broth) or a sukiyaki fix (3 syllables peoples, not 4: pretend the "u" doesn't exist and you'll be fooling the Japanese), give them a shot, but go when they aren't so busy, else your table may become an afterthought.

My bf and I had our hearts set on eating sushi on a Sunday. Imanas tei? Closed. Gaku? Closed. UGHHHHHH!!! Why sushi gods?! (Actually I know why all the good sushi spots are closed on Sunday but it didn't stop me from crying out loud!).... Then we remember Shun. My bf's coworker and his coworker's gf claimed Shun to be the best spot for sushi. After checking their time and realizing that they were open, we headed down. We ordered one of their specials of the night (shoyu pork), tsukune, a sushi set (that we split), and several nigiris. We barely finished the sushi because we didn't think it was that good. The sushi rice was blah. The cuts of the fish was blah. We left Shun hungry, so hungry that we headed over to Burger King for additional food. I really wanted to like this place since it is open on a Sunday, however, I'll skip it the next time I have a huge hankering for sushi on a Sunday.
(2)Chris K.
I went the sushi route instead if the shabu shabu route and it was a bit expensive. There was also a large, dead roach behind my friend's seat and we had to tell the waitress about it. She kept making disgusted noises when she swept it up. The ice cream was yummy but small. The drinks were a bit expensive.
(3)Karen C.
Best sake chazuke I've tried so far. Food is consistently good, never disappointed. We have yet to try their shabu shabu.
(5)Alex T.
Came with my sister and dad with a 630 res. Service was polite and restaurant ambience was very Japanese style. Nothing on the menu really wowed me. Ordered the hamachi roll, spicy ahi roll, calamari, agedashi tofu, kushi katsu and maguro tataki. I personally liked the maguro tataki but everything else was just OK. Still, we enjoyed ourselves and I'd gladly come again/recommend for small parties. I hear shabu shabu is what makes this place notorious, I'll try that next time
(4)Julie I.
Been there with 12people for shabu shabu. they serve so slow you have to beg for the food that caused $35 per person. Bad experience. never will we go there again.
(1)Kevin D.
Mediocre sushi, wife and I came for some sukiyaki special B that came with all you can eat sukiyaki and sushi, ice cream! Sushi was so small and had tsugi on the very very small hamachi I just don't know how the CHEF can even served it to his guest! I been in the restaurant business for over 20 something years and this would be un excepatable! Sorry to all the people that like this place but I won't be returning!

Best Sushi restaurant I know of. Benkei-san is very personable and really knows his ingredients. I would recommend this establishment to all my friends. Great value for their late night special.

I was really impressed with the quality of the food here. We came at dinner time with a large group for some Izakaya dishes and sushi. We did not order the shabu shabu, which is what most of these reviews focus on. As far as the izakaya dishes go, everything was very good. The agedashi tofu, ankimo, soft shell crab, chicken karaage, dynamite, beef tongue, fried kimchi and sashimi plate were all surprisingly good. Even though we ordered a ton of dishes, they did a good job of pacing the food and everything was executed well. The nigiri sushi was pretty good, but lacked the freshness and quality that you would find at the higher end sushi places. And they price their nigiri for one piece each, which is kind of strange. I liked this place tho, because it's not some touristy japanese place you would expect to find in Waikiki. It's got some pretty authentic Japanese dishes and caters to mostly an older Japanese crowd. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy to look at, but the service was good and we ended up having a nice little dinner. You can probably expect to spend between 30-50/pp if you add some alcohol. But it is definitely worth it if you enjoy some good Izakaya.

Every year I'm tasked with planning our holiday party/dinner and of course it has to center around food (and maybe even karaoke). This year, rather than going to a popular yakiniku place as we had in the past couple years, I wanted to try someplace new-- new for myself and everyone else too. Shabu shabu comes up as a solid option and although our original plan was to go to another place, I came across Sushi Bistro Shun on Yelp and was enticed by their all you can eat shabu shabu. Parking: not so great, but if you're there in the evening there should be some street parking available. Atmosphere: One of my dining mates pointed out that it really was gearing towards an older clientele. Definitely not a young and hip kind of place. Service: I'm not sure if it was the language barrier, or we were a different kind of clientele that they're used to but when we asked questions for clarification... we got some pretty short and unclear answers. For example, we asked what exactly was all you can eat sukiyaki... was it just sukiyaki that they would just continue to refill? Do we actually get to cook it? I don't even remember the waitress' response but we ended up Google-ing it afterwards. Food: So we ended up with the all you can eat shabu shabu at $30/person. Let me just point out that yes, it is all you can eat BUT it's all you can eat sliced beef and cabbage. Yup, that was all we got. We also got some tofu (very minimal), noodles (also very minimal) and mushrooms (also very minimal)-- see a trend there? The broth was just a plain basic shabu shabu broth, nothing too fancy there. The meal also comes with an appetizer (it was tsukemono?!) and choice of small cut sushi. So for the price of $30/person, I personally didn't think that was worth it. In fact, my mom would probably have said (yelled) "you can do that at home for $30 and feed 6 people!" All in all, I don't think I would be back for the shabu shabu (and definitely NOT all you can eat). Maybe for the sushi? But even then the service doesn't quite compel me to go rushing back there.

I love sushi, and I love shabu shabu. The sushi chef at Sushi Bistro Shun is amazing in my book, and he's so friendly. I'm sad to say that I've only had the all-you-can-eat shabu shabu once, and let me tell you, I definitely ate my fill. The meat and vegetables are fresh, and I normally don't eat much of the soup, but I indulged a little bit when I visited Sushi Bistro. The oyster appetizer is awesome!! And it comes with great sauce. The sushi is what I come for, though. And when you order, most of (if not all) the sushi is ala carte. But be wary. Your eyes will be too big and you'll order too much. And you might even end up like me and my friends (four people total) with a bill of almost $300. But I can say it was worth it. Got to try fresh sushi from a master crafter in a homey setting. Parking can be tricky. There are stalls in front of the restaurant, but if you can't find any stalls open, there's street parking.

This place is like a great song from the 90's. Totally forgotten about but when it's on the radio, you've got the volume on full blast singing along at the top of your lungs. For some reason I forget this place exists. Maybe it's because it's in such an obscure location. I mean really if you didn't look twice the building it resides in looks like an apartment building. Even though there's a larger sign out on the front of the building that says "Sushi Bistro Shin" it's old and faded and blends in with the background wall. But when you get the chance to check this place out you'll be surprised that the menu offers a variety of Japanese dishes. Things for everyone, including an all-you-can-eat Shabu Shabu or Sukiyaki....sushi, choices from the robata bar, tempura, noodles and teishoku's. A good place to go with picky family members or friends who can have nearly every type of Japanese food here. Parking sucks here so I either try to go early or late. Otherwise you can park on the street or sometimes as a last resort I park in the backlot of the old Koichi/Jimbo's structure. Don't tell anyone though.

Seriously? Isn't customer service TOP priority... especially at a Japanese place? Well, I ordered the "horensou goma ae"...which is spinach with sesame sauce. I took one bite of that and was so disgusted. It was way too sweet...almost like a dessert. I told them to take it away and bring me the "horensou ohitashi" which is a spinach dish prepared a bit differently. The waitress had the nerves to tell me she was going to charge me for the first dish that I didn't like. She's like, "Well, you ate it right?" I was like WTF? I had ONE bite...I didn't like...it tastes so horrible, I can't eat it. Take it away, and bring me the other dish. Do NOT charge me for the other crap. In the end, she didn't charge me, but I can't believe she had the nerve to say she'd charge me because I had one bite of their disgusting food. Their other stuff I had.... I wasn't impressed. Nothing special. Nothing really WoW that I'd come back. Yelp 365 Challenge #322/365

I've been here a number of times but not for a long time recently. Went last night for my birthday with two friends and reaffirmed why. Sorry Benkie, your quality is good but certainly doesn't justify the prices you charge and who even knows if you make them up as you go depending on your mood. I really felt bad for my friends who footed my birthday bill.

Hi, my name is Ramfis, and i am an Izakaya fanatic like you would not believe. There are only two places that i frequent quite often when i get the chance, and that's Imana's Tei and Izakaya Gaku, and Imana's Tei and Izakaya Gaku, like a ping pong match is in session, i love both these places equally and i can find no fault with either of those choices. Enter Sushi Bistro Shun. This is a sleeper in my realm of Izakaya eateries that are popping up like great Bruno Mar's songs. This place has great food and sushi and the master himself has a wonderful personality to boot. What makes them very popular is that they have a $29 dollar all you can eat Shabu Shabu Special which includes Chef's choice of appetizer for the evening, all you can eat meat, and a choice of sushi roll. Now the key word is EVERYONE has to have the Shabu Shabu special in order for it to kick in, so you better have a craving for Shabu Shabu. But the reason i love coming here is because of the great Sushi and Sashimi the Chef/Owner has to offer. His Sashimi is always fresh and his Sushi is always top notch here as well. Other things such as the Oysters, Shrimp Tempura, and Manila Clams in light Broth also enhances your dining experience here... Sushi Bistro is located at 1914 S.King St across from Alan Wong's Restaurant. Just look for this sign on the left side of the road. yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… As you enter this Izakaya, just look for the Sushi Master who is always behind the helm. He's the only bald guy in the place... yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… Now, lets get down to the good stuff. Sushi Bistro Shun offers fresh Sashimi here if you want him to make you an assortment of fresh Sashimi or he can make you just your Sashimi of your choice. Pictured here is the Assorted Sashimi of the evening,Hamachi Sashimi,Mirugai Sashimi, and my all time favorite Sashimi of all time...O-Toro!!!! yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… Now, onto the Sushi. Chef makes this roll called the Honeymoon Roll, which consists of a roll stuffed with Crabmeat,Spicy Tuna, and served with a dollop of Uni to boot...it's been a while since i've been here, but i believe that's what's in it. It was just amazing!! This is definitely a must order here at Sushi Bistro Shun... yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… The Soft Shell Crab Roll was just ok for me and it was the least favorite of the Sushi i ordered but it was ok for good measure.. yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… Now, we also ordered a mix of Uni,Ama Ebi, and the Honeymoon Roll again because it was so good. The Sushi here is fabulous... yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… And i ordered more Uni because i can..... yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… And i saved the BEST Sushi for last...The O-toro Sushi which he tops of with Otoro Tartare was simply genius and simply out of this world.. yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… They also have an Ala Carte Menu which is a little unusual.. yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… And im also very special too because i'm a Yelp Elite!!! yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… The menu items are also an added treat to this place. The Oysters here are good, but i think Imana's Tei has the BEST Oysters in town. Sorry, that's how i feel and you can't make me change my mind.. yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… But the Beef Tataki and Shrimp Tempura were really great tasting... yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… And for all you Ankimo Lover's also known as Monkfish Liver with Ponzu. It is as good as it gets... yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… The Enoki Mushroom wrapped in Bacon was just.......WOW!! yelp.com/biz_photos/a1sj… In ending this review, i have to say Sushi Bistro Shun is a very well respected place in the Izakaya realm and i would recommend you to give this place a shot, especially if you are into Shabu Shabu or Sukiyaki. Thank You Sushi Bistro Shun for wonderful food...

A quiet, little sushi bistro...just the way I like it. The quality of the food is unreal. Sushi Chef Benkei is very personable and his artistry with a knife is fun to watch. I always order the spider roll. It has a spicy, mayo-like sauce that is killer. I don't like mayo, but this sauce is totally "broke da mouth". Its creamy, smokey, and has a bit of a bite to it. The staff is very helpful and polite. They helped us pick out drinks that we were unfamiliar with and we were pleasantly surprised and how well they could figure out our palates. The only knock on this place is the parking. There is a small strip of stalls in a narrow parking lot. Getting out is a bit of a hassle as it is too narrow to reverse and turn your car around. Many times you'll end up reversing all the way out into King St which is a little dangerous.

I was excited to try Sushi Bistro as my family has been there before. It was very disappointing not because of the food but the awful service we received. Granted we were a larger party (9) but the waiter and waitress weren't helpful. Aren't waiters/waitress suppose to WAIT on you? We had to ask for everything (water, dessert menus, etc.) and never asked if we were doing okay. It was if we were invisible until we complained about the service. Only then, did they apologize but first the waiter blamed the kitchen for service! The food was good, it was the service that sucked. He then apologized profusely but by it was too late. We will not becoming back to this establishment.

Sushi Bistro has been my sushi bar of choice for my two and a half years living in Hawaii. Upon walking in my first time I knew I was in a place that was authentic. As a hapa I was greeted with the language of Japanese in the air. Sushi chef Benkey definitely carries weight in this establishment. With out his energy and pleasantries, Sushi Bistro would be lacking something in the atmosphere of the place. Benkey will take care of his customers and always makes one feel welcomed. The staff is courteous as well. The overall feel of the place is cozy. I like the option of the side room in which you can reserve, just remember to take off your shoes. It is not a large establishment but it has enough room for a party of six to eight maybe ten. I come here for my sushi. The ahi is of a good cut and the unagi is killer with a portion you would not find on the mainland. Benkey's experience shows in his presentation and his choices and options that are not featured on the menu. If you feel adventurous, develop some repertoire and ask him to make some sushi for you. He'll be happy to show you something new. The menu is not limited to just sushi. There is a full kitchen with a very Japanese menu, meaning you will want to know your dishes if you're not adventurous enough to try some of the items. Safe bets are always the miso soup, udon, shrimp/assorted/vegetable tempura, and the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) are staples. Pros * Atmosphere * Service * Presentation * Save a bottle of your sake for later * Late hours (call ahead of time) Cons * Small parking lot/street parking
(5)Kimo S.
I come here for one meal and one meal only. The all you can eat Shabu Shabu. Let me tell you, next to Hakone this is the best you'll get on the island. The cuts of beef are incredible, the vegetables are simple but fresh and the service has always been great. I am still basking in the meal I ate five hours ago and planning my next trip. For $25 you get a sushi dish, salad and then the main event. You will not be disappointed here if you want to gorge yourself on some of the best Shabu Shabu. Try it, love it and know that you'll keep coming back for more.

I've eaten at a lot of Japanese spots in Hawaii and have to say, for the sukiyaki - this place is one of, if not the best on Oahu. I have no clue about the sushi, so I don't have any feedback on that but the all-you-can-eat sukiyaki is awesome. I went with my fiancee and my parents and we left stuffed and very, very satisfied. From the Japanese speaking hostess and waitstaff to the fresh beef, veggies and sukiyaki sauce - this place is amazing. The service was spot on, there were no parking issues (it was past 9 on a Tues though) and it was TRULY all-you-can-eat. Leave it up to two old Japs (my parents) to find a place this great. They know food and I love em for it!
(4)Kristin P.
I love this restaurant! Their sushi is always so fresh and the sushi size it perfect.....not too much rice. They also have the best ika nigiri!
(5)Rita L.
just came back from dinner here. passed the sign for all u can eat shabushabu or sukiyaki for $25. you get to choose 1 roll of sushi of your choice too...but we weren't impressed. very nice staff, the service was pretty good. crappy parking, just hope and pray that they have a stall in their small lot. the veggies we got were just cabbage, tofu, mushroom, and green onions...that was very disappointing, not much variety at all. We did get a good portion of meat, the quality seemed aite...wish they offered pork too... The rice was perfect, the sauces (ponzu and goma) were mediocre! unimpressed with the food to be honest. don't thinke we'll be back...maybe if they had more veggie variety, we felt we ate about 35 bucks worth of food, not 50!
(3)Kimmy C.
service was terrible, slow...very slow. We had to ask for hot tea 3 times from 3 different servers. the speciality menu is on a small confusing handwritten board they and to you. there is sauce splatter on the walls. The wafu steak was just okay, the vegetables that came with the meat was way better.. the hand roll sushi was bland and tasteless. it was ugly and messy, not tight and neat. for the price i can do way better. oh...and the noise was unbearable. the acoustics in that place is bad. it was waaay too loud to have a pleasant dinner. i do not ever plan to return.
(2)Seth H.
When I want to eat alot, this is where I go, always eat the shabu shabu here so can tell you much about the rest of the menu, think you can do AYCE sukiyaki too but I'm not sure. They start you off with a small 4-6 piece sushi roll of either cali or salmon, then a nice platter of thinly slice beef, tray of cold tofu, won bok, long rice, green onions, shitake mushrooms and two types of dipping sauces.(ponzu- which is good on anything and a sesame sauce) My friend actually dips whatever in both sauces before putting it in his mouth. After you finish, you ask for more. One thing that does seem to happen is the quality of the meat from the first tray to the next one seems to occur, but I'm not sure, but what your eating is pretty darn good. Oh, if you're parking a car, I would recommend reversing into the stall otherwise you will have to back out onto King St. but this isn't always possible as the parking fills up and they sometimes double park cars.

We are sorta becoming regulars of the place. We love "benkay"s food so much we try to go at least once every visit to hnl. This time the Christmas special is definItely a bargain basement deal. Soup ,sashimi, tempura, unagi kushiyaki and dessert all for just $19.99. Nephew wanted to order chanko nabe but we talked him out of it. Shortly before we left we noticed two lovely ladies sitting at the table next to ours having some kind of shabu shabu and we asked them what it was. Turns out tWas indeed chanko nabe ($28...add $?? For an order of beef shabu shabu meat) and they were oh so super nice and kind to request a bowl and share it with our lil 9 yr old nephew. Of course we ended up sampling from his share and we all agreed it would be the thing to order no doubt but it will have to be next time. Thanks ladies for sharing and thanks for the great conversation. To Benkei: "mata ashita!" (regulars will understand)
(5)Dawn L.
I LOVE shabu shabu, so the fact that I can have all the shabu shabu I can eat for $25 is FAN-tastic! The meat is fresh and beautiful and great quality as it should be. I have no complaints about the shabu shabu. The service could use a little work. We had a server who clearly didn't speak English as his first language. Not a problem...except that he seemed to be irritated with us about it that we had to work so hard on communication. We had a misunderstanding that ended up costing us because we were charged for something that we SWEAR he told us was included in the price of our meal--of course, when we questioned him about it, he clearly explained to us in plain English that we could understand, that we had to pay for it. Funny how that works. Not a big deal...I think it was a salad or something. But you can see how that might be a problem if it was something higher priced--It was enough that my hungrier half hasn't wanted to go back since then. He's not a shabu-fiend like I am, either though.
(3)Ryan K.
Very poor service. I recently took my father out for his b-day dinner and was upset at the treatment we received. 5 adults out of the party ordered the all you can eat Shabu-shabu while I sat with the kids on another table eating sushi. I was accused of eating the shabu just because the waitress saw me cooling the piping hot food for the kids. The waitresses also disappeared after dropping the first plate of vegetables and meat for my family making us get up to be served. On top of it all the food I ordered did not arrive and I was charged for it. When I mentioned it of course they removed it immeadiately, but the damage was done. So the question is what about the food? I would say for Japanese style it's just okay.

Ate here last Saturday. I have yet to try the Shabu Shabu but I definitely try that next time. Me and my friends ordered a bunch of things ala carte. Dishes that stood out are the "Cream Cheese Wasabe", "Ankimo" and Crab Meat Nigiri. Be aware that parking is usually scarce during prime time. Overall good experience here other than the fact that this is yet another place that doesn't accept American Express.

Bistro Shun used to be on our weekly go to dinners. Don't get me wrong, I like this place a lot. But as time goes on I have found better places to go. The sushi is generous and usually pretty good. There is also a full Izakaya menu and an all you can eat shabu shabu meal as well. This place is busy and the owner, Benke, seems to have to direct all the wait staff all night long. So if you are at the sushi bar be prepared to feel Benke's pain and listen to him yelling at his minions. I like the food here. My list is: Benke's unagi, special tsukune, horenso gomae, amai ebi with deep fried head...well I guess I like everything here. Service is ok but you have to ask for service or you won't get it (Nihongo Lesson 101: Yell "SUMIMASEN" for service at a J-restaurant). Lot's of local Japanese here if you are keeping score. Parking is a big problem for this location. Feel free to double or triple or quadruple park. The staff will let you know when you have to move your car.

I totally agree w/Kimo S. I only eat there because of the quality of the all you can eat Shabu Shabu or Tsukiyaki. The beef is totally marbalized. I crave the wonbok cabbage/shitake mushrooms/konyaku/onions/green onions simmering in the broth. Of course I have the tsukiyaki w/the raw egg bowl and hot rice which is all part of the package. It's hands down the best deal for about $26.00 incl tax as of this posting. They do make a very tasty garlic/cheese pizza for about $5.00.

i had a hard time finding this place on yelp. the business sign says 'sushi bistro' but here on yelp, it's bistro shun. what???? it's the same restaurant. so if you wanna eat here, you gotta look for sushi bistro on king street. about the food. yummy! i think it's better than tokkuri tei and cheaper than imanas!!!!! the ambiance here isn't that great. what we ordered that was memorable: katsu sticks (i don't know what's it's called on the menu, but it's under the fried stuff). thick chunks of tonkatsu skewered on a stick and deep fried. the meat was tender (which sometimes at other places it's not) then deep fried. this was better than imanas. they were HUGE and tender. yum! grilled mochi wrapped in nori. this was my favorite. it's so down home cooking that it was yummy. nothing really special, but comfort food for me. also, i haven't seen this on any other menu. shrimp and veggie tempura- the tempura was crunchy and the batter was light. it wasn't heavy and thick. i like that. shishito peppers- they were marinated in a sugar, mirin, shoyu sauce. it came chilled with bonito flakes on top. the sushi was delicious. the fish was fresh and tasty. the nori was yummy too. not too chewy and it had a good taste to it. they have dinner specials from 5-6 pm and 10-11:30pm. there's four items: katsu skewers, tempura, wafu hamburger steak and one more dish but i forgot what it was. i think it's like $8 and it comes with shoyu chicken, rice, salad and miso soup. that's a great price! there's also chirashi for $11. there's also all you can eat shabu shabu and sukiyaki for around $24. the only thing is your WHOLE table has the eat the all you can eat. this is served all night. i would definitely go back. we went at 9:30pm and had no problem with parking. a lot of bobora's go here, so you know it's good.
