I'm impressed, their sushi is fresh and good quality, and such an awesome deal, $4.25 for a 3-piece salmon nigiri. $8 for a Chicken Donburi bowl. Their sushi is fresh and are healthy sized portions. They could put less rice but flavor was nice (not too much of that "sushi rice" taste which can be overpowering) ...I would order this again! Also had a Chicken Donburi $8, which was very tasty -- it was like chicken teriyaki with small little strips of seaweed in it, over a bowl of white rice. Not to be mistaken for OYAKO donburi which is made with egg, which I am a super huge fan of. Bummed they don't have the oyako or egg dishes and I probably won't order the Donburi again because I'm not big on rice bowls unless there's egg in it. They don't have a chirashi bowl either which I think would probably do really well. Can't believe I haven't tried Sumo's after hearing good things about it after all these years. I guess I thought they only had sushi the whole time and not regular rice dishes with chicken, tempura or kalbi, or udon/ramen. Going to get a bento set the next time for sure, they range from $9.95 to $10.50, like the Udon Maki Set: Cold udon, udon sauce, 6 pcs calimaki, potato salad and edamame. Deluxe bento $10.50 has 2 pcs shrimp tempura, 3 pcs unagi, 3 pcs nigiri, potato salad and edamame. Mmm can't wait. The location is easy to get to, it's upstairs on the corner of Kukui and Pali, facing that back driveway from Kukui St to get into the Longs/Safeway parking lot. You can park in the Longs/Safeway parking lot, then walk towards Kukui St to go up the red stairs. Or you can park on Kukui St, parking meters in effect from 7am to 6:30pm Mon-Sat, and 1 quarter is good for 10 minutes. They are open til 8pm, so free parking meter parking if after 6:30pm. Even if I ordered take out, and didn't call my order in in advance, they were pretty quick with my meal.

Checked out Sumo Sushi today. Cute little eatery. I was immediately greeted by a very friendly woman. She patiently answered my questions before taking my order. They don't have much seating except for some bar stools, so it's mostly a "take-out" place. I ended up ordering the Unagi & Tempura bento...I was more than satisfied with their flavors and preparation of the food. They don't overdo it, just enough flavor to enhance everything...love that. The shrimp tempura was crispy, the Unagi was tasty, the ebi and ahi sushi were very fresh and her potato salad was awesome! I also had the pleasure of tasting the spicy ahi donburi which was so Ono. If you've never tried their food, it's worth a shot!

This is a small and somewhat hidden little sushi joint near the Safeway and Longs on Vineyard Blvd. The owner is also the chef and she's really friendly and puts a lot of effort into the presentation of her dishes.

IT's simple, easy, and fast sushi at a reasonable price. Han, the owner is always working there and she's very sweet and courteous. I always get the combo donburi (spicy tuna and unagi). Her store is clean and cool and is located right by downtown/Longs Pali. They have free customer parking. I usually call in my order when I'm in a rush.

My husband and I go there every thursday after work. The lady is really nice and friendly. She totally knows what we like and she is very fast, no matter how many orders she gets. We order a plate on a holiday and she was packed but still did an amazing and quick job. the place is small but comfortable and very clean, it has 5 chairs in case you wanna eat there. You can purchase drinks and cold green tea. You can park downstairs for free.

Go ahead and typecast us lady. As soon as we walk into your establishment. I may look haole but I do UNDERSTAND sushi and your menu. Wait...you are Korean running a sushi shop am I right?! Ha! Don't repeat every item we order then explain to us like a 3rd grader what "maki" is and "ungi" is Eel you know? Yes! I know! In fact I can pronounce everything on your menu, break it down and hand it back to you! Pure ignorance lady. Btw...yobo-say HELL NO!

Sumo Sushi is the best fast Suahi I have ever had. The owner is so kind to my wife and I. She makes GREAT spicy tuna. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants quick, tasty sushi.

Five stars because the sushi was delicious, excellent service from the owner who greeted me and then hand made my order and it's great for takeout. There's probably enough room for 4 or 5 people to sit at the 2 bar tops so I would suggest take out. I ordered the spicy ahi maki roll (8 pieces) and it was very tasty. See pic below. Also got the kimchee hand roll which was also very flavorful. Han, the restaurant owner, was very sweet and kind. I was delightfully surprised by her sushi and will definitely be back. Next time I wanna try the combo donburi (spicy ahi and unagi)

Han really takes the time to get to know her customers and she greets you with such excitement when you walk in. I definitely feel special especially since I don't consider myself a regular. I've probably made about a dozen appearances since I moved to this island 3 1/2 years ago. The spicy ahi bento box is my usual and is absolutely delicious! Her spicy ahi is definitely one of my favorites on the island. The place is small and orders are usually made to go. The place sits about 5 people at most? Feel free to give her a call and make an order as you head over. She's usually the only one working so it can get somewhat busy during lunch or dinner.

The sushi is great! The service was great! Han was very polite and nice, and not to mention good looking! The location- Not so good, the ugly troll parking attendant wasn't very nice. She was a short dykey looking woman, who shouted me saying "Eh where you going eh?" She wasn't dressed like a security guard, she never even identified herself. I hope she jumps off a bridge.

We order a platter on short notice ,I really appreciate the friendly and helpful service I received. They asked me what kind of sushi I preferred on the platter, amount of people and it came out perfect. Reasonable prices and fast friendly service. Would recommend for that quick fix or that last minute "What are we bringing??" Sumo Sushi is in the building located on S. Kukui St next to Pali Longs.

My fave little place. Choon is delightful, elegant and masterful just like the food she serves.

Must order: tempura roll or Philly roll I would go so often and order the same thing that when I would call, after I place my order, she says "oh it's you!". I pride myself on being recognized at places I love to eat at. I grew up watching Cheers and I just love it when everyone knows my name. Anyway, this place is a small shop without too many seats. That's ok though because she's more than happy to make your order to go. I love her tempura roll with the sauce that she puts in it. It also has the right shrimp to batter ratio. There are days that I crave it! Her Philly roll is also yummy with cream cheese and salmon. Her handrolls are the perfect size that I can eat one of each and feel satiated. I definitely would recommend trying it out!

Great sushi. Sometimes It takes a while though. Its best if you call in and pick up. The lady at the counter is really nice as well.
(4)caroline c.
Great place but small. They have counters if you want to eat there, but it's not a place to hang out. The owner is nice, and the place is clean. Her spicy ahi is amazeballs. I also tried the inari stuffed with kimchee fried rice (can't remember what it's called) but it was genius. I now make that at home. For a quick bite that's as comparable to a sit down sushi joint, I think I would prefer coming here.

Greatest sushi on Oahu! This is my children's and my favorite place to go for sushi. We usually make it a sushi picnic and walk down to Foster's Botanical Garden with it in our hand. We love Han, the owner. She is always so sweet. She also makes some incredibly good and fast sushi!
(5)Melanie H.
I've been coming to Sumo Sushi for the past five years and it never serves me wrong... Their shrimp tempura is super crispy and their kimchee inari is nothing short of amazing.. Super flavor with the right about of beef, but the right balance of kimchee. The service is great.. Always served with a smile and a thank you before you go.. Their prices are decent which makes it great as well. Even though there is only one lady working in the back and you may need to wait five minutes longer, it's worth the wait.

Tempura Udon here was amazing (: I enjoyed my noodles. The staff is kind also! Small, but cute place! I came back again because I was craving takoyaki..(she said she made it the best) in my taste it's tons better than shirokiyas..not as much toppings but it was great! Will definitely visit this place more (:

me and the bf have been on a spicy ahi don craze (ok, ok, more like it's me on the craze and i just drag him along!) and this one rates good to me. the california handroll was really good though! this place is close and quick and i wouldn't mind coming back to try their chicken don and other handrolls.

We eat here weekly, great location, AWESOME service, & the sushi is always fresh & pretty. The Miso soup is really good. They remember what I want & how I like it. They are great at recomending new stuff and it is always good. Prices are competitive She washes her hands & utencils constantly!
(4)Jenny M.
Great place for sushi on the go. The spicy tuna bowl is so yummy! The owner/chef is always so polite and you can tell she appreciates the business. A cute mom and pop type place with great food and fast service.
(5)johnson l.
The place is almost the same as aloha sushi, but a bit more pricey. You also have to wait awhile for your food because there is only one lady working, overall the food is decent.
(3)Bailey S.
Sushi: very very good! Hard to know where to get good sushi, but this is the good stuff! Service: so very friendly, and speedy The spicy tuna is a solid dish and the California roll is made with shredded crab meat and no less delicious.

We went there earlier this afternoon. I ordered a hot kimchee udon soup and my girlfriend order some sushi roll. They both turn out very fresh and tasty. But those kimchee in my soup were chop too fine and doesn't have the best texture; however, it was still very darn good.
(4)Courtney V.
Their Spicy Ahi set is my favorite! We love to go to Sumo Sushi because of the sushi but most of all the customer service. The owner is so friendly and she pretty much remembers every customer when they come in. I would definitely recommend because it is so good and convenient right off of the Pali next to Safeway and Longs. She does take phone orders so it's always best to call in so once you get there you can just pick it up.
(5)Kyrillos G.
She was really friendly and made me feel welcome. Plus she takes real pride in her work.
(5)William C.
Good, reliable sushi, with some nice additions, like my favorite, the kimchi kalbi inari (a tofu skin pocket full of rice, kimchi, and BBQ beef). I could live on those alone. Han, the owner is very nice, and works hard. She's amazing--I come about once a year on vacation, and she actually remembers my usual order!
(5)Susan T.
Love this place. Every time we visit my in-laws in downtown Honolulu, this is my first stop for lunch. The owner is very friendly, but since she's the only one who's there, orders can take a little while to fill sometimes. I often run over to the Safeway next door to get a few staples while waiting for my order to be completed, Try the kimchi kalbi inari. I could eat those every day!
(5)Doris D.
Good place for a quick sushi fix if you're downtown. It's a bit cheaper than Ninja sushi and a little better quality than Aloha Sushi. I got the set where it's a mix of nigiri sushi and a roll, which is filling. The service was a tad slow because there's only 1 lady working.
(3)Lana H.
Came for a quick lunch with daughter #1. Ajima was very nice and friendly. She got our orders, spicy ahi donburi and a kim chee, tempura udon. OK, it wasn't the snazziest place but the food was quick and delicious. Spicy ahi had a beautiful color that screamed, "I'm FRESH" and the udon probably was frozen (who makes 'em fresh anymore?) but the broth was just right and the tempura placed on the udon, kamaboko, wakame and broth was still slightly crispy and flavorful. Great food and service, will be coming back!

I am only basing this on a first time try, but this place definitely has the potential to be my go to sushi joint. I noticed this place half hidden in a little shabby building adjacent to the Pali Longs a while back and finally got around to checking it out today. The shop was clean and tidy, so that allayed my worries a bit given the somewhat, ahem, untidy look of the building it resides in. It was a one-woman operation, at least at the time I ventured in, and she was friendly and helpful. I went ahead and ordered the most expensive maki mono on the menu--the rainbow roll at $8.95 (with low end being the futo maki at $4.80). I took it to go, though there is some counter space available if you want to park it and eat right there. Rice quality/preparation was very good--I am very peeved when I end up with sushi and the rice is made with non-sushi/low grade rice and/or just not prepared correctly (this is why I am not gonna return to Aloha Sushi any time soon--the other nearby alternative I have). I confess I am not the best judge of fish quality, but I had no complaints with today's rainbow maki. I will start going down Sumo Sushi's menu (pretty typical fare that includes also a variety of bento) in the next few weeks and report back.

I really like the spicy ahi donburi here. Nice cubes of fresh ahi in a tasty, spicy sauce. I feel the serving size is a little small as I am able to easily finish off the whole dish, but it is probably in line with what a serving size should be. Sometimes I get the combo donburi, which is half spicy ahi/half unagi. Super tasty and satisfying. The owner is friendly and we always get great service here. This is a great place to come for take-out sushi.
(4)Cassie T.
We ordered three rolls all of which were very good! We stopped in for take out and we were happy to have our order ready within minutes. We absolutely loved two of the rolls. The third had a spicy poke that wasn't what it was supposed to be. If your looking for fast, cheap, abs tasty sushi stop by Sumo Sushi!

This is my I'm-too-lazy-to-cook-and-want-to-eat-sushi-but-Âdon't-want-to-drive-all-the-way-to-Genki's sushi stop. It's within walking distance from where I live and also convenient since I'm usually in the area because I have to stop by Long's or Safeway. My favorites from Sumo Sushi are their Spicy Ahi Donburi and Rainbow Maki. The owner (woman always behind the counter preparing your food) always uses the freshest ingredients and her Spicy Ahi sauce is amazingly addictive! The prices aren't all that bad too, but considering the fact that I'm a college student (AKA broke), I can't visit as often as I want to. Great for take-out and on-the-go sushi.

Few days ago I ordered the spicy ahi set combo whatever from here. Got home opened it and it looked awesome....until I ate it. The spicy ahi tasted like a few days old. It was smothered in mayo and whatever sauce so you can't really see what it looks like or taste the awful part of it. I wiped it off with a napkin and see that the spicy ahi is nearly black barely red in color and the taste had a spoiled rotten taste. Disgusted with it I threw it out after a few bites. In the middle of the night I woke up feeling nauseated, stomach felt funny, etc. I still feel horrible today and went to the doctors to find out that I have the stomach flu on top of a cold. This has got to be it because ever since I ate food from here that day, I haven't been able to eat anything at all or hold anything down except drink liquids. Terrible and horrible never again.

The last time I ate here was about 3 years ago. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Bowl, which is what everyone in Hawaii seems to love. It was delicious but the next day I broke out in hives caused by too much histamine from seafood. These hives aren't life threatening, they just show up as little bumps on my skin like the outside of a lychee fruit. Normally this problem occurs when I eat lots of dirty shrimp or too much chicken eggs. I didn't understand how this happened with spicy tuna since there's no shrimp in it. (Yes mayo has eggs but i have to eat about 3 eggs to cause myself to get an allergic reaction). So I avoided eating there for a long time, until yesterday... I was waiting for my brother to finish getting his acupuncture done next door and started craving for bad sushi. I could've made an attempt to walk to Safeway for some American food but the Early Bird Hookers were marking their territory outside. I decided to stay where it was safe and deal with one Korean Lady instead of a flock of hookers. I ordered the Kim-Chee Beef Bowl, something non-seafood. Unfortunately I saw how it was made. Grab a plastic container, scoop the rice, mash it flat, slap on the beef, throw it in the microwave, slap on the Kim Chee, and service with a smile. Overall the dish wasn't that good but I was able to eat it. Maybe if I didn't see her put my food in the microwave, I would've been "Shamwowed!!!"

Definitely my favorite "fast food" sushi on the island! Fresh fish, very tasty food and great service. I've been coming here since they opened and it has gotten better over the years- not that it was ever bad. The owner is a great hostess as well as sushi chef. I love her food and the menu. The only thing stopping me from coming back every day is the prices. $9 for a soda and spicy ahi donburi? Although it filled me up, I could get a pretty big plate lunch and soda for that and eat leftovers for lunch the next day. But, it was so delicious that I can't complain too much. This will be my rough-week-treat.
