One of my favorite hole in the walls. I haven't been here in awhile but I know everything I've tried was good. I'm back today for the fish-unchoi for the fourth time. Always hits the spot. Price is fair and the owner is always nice. Parking right in front when it's not too busy.

Sand Island Chop Suey, I'm been coming here for years........and over the years, it's been a great and convenient place for some Chinese local grindz, if you just so happen to be working in the Sand Island area. Today my co-worker & I were doing a job together at a bank, and upon finishing our job, my co-worker had the cravings for some Chinese today, and suggested Sand Island Chop Suey. Upon arriving to the little hole in da wall diner, were very lucky today, as there were 3 open spaces............please note, there is only 3 parking spaces in front of this business! The other 3 parking spaces are for the Subway Sandwich shop next door. The parking spaces are clearly marked, so don't go parking - "any kine", "I no care, do what I like" thing, otherwise someone might get mad! For today's lunch I ordered me the Oyster Sauce Chicken with cake noodles............and my co-worker had ordered the Crispy Gau Gee Noodles. Overall I enjoyed my lunch..........chicken was a weeee bit salty, but I must say it was hot, crispy, & very MEATY!!!! The cake noodles, wasn't to my liking because the cake noodles seemed "pressed". Normally a good cake noodle, you will find the outside crispy, but the middle a bit soft & chewy. Because my cake noodle seemed pressed, it was mainly hard, but it was soften up a bit due to the gravy that was poured over the noodles. Still edible, but I've had way better at other Chinese restaurants. Over the years, the food has slipped a little (but I'm comparing it to the old days), but overall it's still okay.............I sure miss the old days here, where they use to serve up very large quantities of food, and it was all so tasty too! The service was fast & friendly! One of the ladies that work here, still remembers me............and I haven't been coming here on a regular basis for sometime now. The little hole in the wall place has seen better days, but it is still popular with the blue collar workers who work at the docks, and near by industrial area. This place still serves an obscene, dirt cheap breakfast! For $2.95 you can get a special breakfast deal that consist of - 3 eggs, 2 scoop rice, with a choice of Ham, Lup Chong (for you guys that don't know what this is; it's Chinese Sausage), Portuguese Sausage, Spam, or Vienna Sausage. All of that for just $2.95 my friends!!!!! Wot a deal!!!!!

This place has great breakfast deals. No frills and nothing fancy. Perfect to fill that void. But when you add two pieces of toast to their three dollar deal, it turns into five dollars. So I would just stick to the rice. Anything extra you lose the deal. I came here for the Wor Won Ton Min because I wasnt feeling well. It hit the spot perfect. It had at least eight pieces of won ton, three shrimp, lots of pork and char siu with choy sum and a partridge in a pear tree. And best of all THE SHRIMP WAS CLEANED. If you cant tell a cleaned shrimp, you been betting extra. Its big, its $7.50 and worth every penny. This is a majority blue collar quick morning and afternoon stop for some grinds before the day begins or along the way. More than likely in the morning time, you'll be parking a ways down if the trucks are there before you.

Three stars is really a good summary for this place. The food is just cooked normal- looks ok, tastes ok and just is presented, you guessed it, OK. The food really is just normal. For example, beef broccoli is just cooked to be not raw- not too chewy and just enough soy sauce that it is slated and flavored but not to taste as the best thing you have ever tasted. The meat was just cooked fine- nothing to complain about but really is this what food is about? No- if you are in Sand Island and you are in this area for work and you know how traffic is on Nimitz it is a stop to stop at and just sit and eat but it is not something to talk about other than "I'm starving where is normal food to eat?" Different Head Start staff would suggest this place as somewhere to eat- knowing that food is better in Chinatown or anywhere else but since there is nothing in the area at Sand Island that is normal as it is so industrial that it is a normal normal normal place for locals to eat. Breakfast can be seen as a highlight here as it seems really cheap but with the cheap price comes a cheap meal. It is just eggs done to order but that are almost tasting just like at home of a fried egg - with nothing special. Normal food to the nth degree. Just normal. Inside looks so normal= like a local kitchen table was just set up at someone's house and then they had to move it to Sand Island. Recommendation- don't need to have to go to the bathroom. Location- be ready for trucks and more trucks to go by - It is industrial Sand Island and it is not a fun location. Parking is just off the street so just be careful parking and pulling out so that you don't get hit by a truck. Just be ready for a full on 3 star all the way - but if you need to eat - it is just a 3 star food experience.

I had some time to wait before I was to fly off to Seattle so I stopped by since I noticed their breakfast special, Cool 3 eggs 2 scoops rice and a choice of meat (I took Portuguese Sausage) which came pretty quickly I ordered my eggs sunny side up which was perfect so I could mix the yolk with my rice. What can I say a good deal for a great price I wish I worked closer I'd come and eat breakfast here more often.

When construction workers are in the mood for Chinese plate lunch, they go to Sand Island Chop Suey. You'll find the place packed every day of the week with parking spaces in front of the diner invariably taken, a testament to its popularity. The "anytime specials" are $5.95 and include beef broccoli and fried chicken; orange chicken and char siu; and lup chong and mixed vegetables. I appreciate the generous scoops of steamed rice as well as the option to substitute it with a tasty bed of cake noodle for only 75 cents. During a recent visit, I spied a table of construction workers feasting on the Sand Island Combo Plate ($7.25), a tremendous serving of food consisting of gau gee, char siu, chicken and spare ribs over fried rice or cake noodle. I also noticed a group of masons enjoying the oyster sauce chicken with cake noodle ($6.25) and wonton mein in soup ($5.70). Sand Island Chop Suey opens at 5 a.m., which is ideal for construction crews in the mood for the breakfast special ($2.95) which includes three eggs, two scoops rice and your choice of ham, bacon, Portuguese sausage, Vienna sausage or Spam. Also popular is the mushroom and cheese omelet with two scoops rice for only $4.50. Like the lunch plates, the portions are astonishing. Monday to Friday, 5 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For $3 you can get rice, 3 eggs and a side of meat. Not bad for a breakfast to go. Has saved me from starving in the mornings before I head to work. I'll try their lunch specials the next time I forget my lunch.
