Is it the cleanest chinese restaurant? No. Is the friendliest? I think so, but I think it might be due to the fact that the waitress (also owner?) recognizes my family and I when we stop by. It's 50/50 that we do pick-up and/or eat in. I love coming here when I just want some good old chinese food (my comfort/go to ethinic food). There are two restaurants in Hawaii Kai and I frequent both. This one because they don't put on airs in their restaurant (i.e. like the more "classy" chinese restaurants). Here I don't feel judged when I show up in my hobo clothes. This particular restaurant has a very limited options on dim sum and manapuas. So if you are in the mood for dim sum and want a variety I'd suggest go somewhere else. I definitely don't come here for dim sum. The waitress is always nice. The food is always good. All in all, you want good, cheap, comfort food, this is the place for you.

I have eaten here a bunch of times....mostly with family. It is a cozy neighborhood Chinese restaurant and it's always nice to have family dinner here. Having said that, this restaurant is not the cleanest place ever...and it seems everytime I go it is less clean. For some people this is an issue....for others.....not a big deal. The waitstaff here is always nice and helpful, They put your order in right away and the food never takes that long. I have also ordered take out from here as well, and it was pretty fast. This last time I went, we had: Crispy gau gee Their gau gee is pretty good. I am a huge fan of gau gee and this place makes it well. Crispy on the outside and a good amount of filling on the inside. Crispy gau gee mein I have never met a crispy gau gee mein I haven't liked. Their version is pretty good and they use super thin noodles for their dish. Orange chicken Ordered this for the kid.....he liked it...and we all liked it. Crispy and sweet...definitely better than Panda Express. Sizzling beef platter This wasn't as good as we wanted...and it was fairly expensive too. The beef was a little lower quality than we had hoped and that is what I think made the difference. Egg foo young I am from the mainland...so I always miss the gravy that goes on top...but most locals don't eat it with gravy....it was just ok for me. Sweet and sour spare ribs This was my first time ordering this here...and I really liked it. The meat was tender and the flavor was good. I would get this again. I will be back....not the best ever...but I like it!

Mongolian beef was ok...no noodles as I would have expected as part of the meal. No other vegetables besides onions and a few green peppers. Did not come with rice.

First, i dont eat fish or anything that resides in water. I order char siu fried rice weekly and its the best i've had on this rock to date. I would give Phoenix 5 stars except for the occasional bone sliver in the char siu (I shovel the rice in my mouth) which is murder on my teeth. I ordered egg rolls a couple of weeks ago and it was poor at best due to it being nothing but grease. Place is on the dirty side so i wouldnt ever eat in there. Friendly enough for me (always a thank you) as im not mister outgoing anyway. Other cool thing for me is that there is never a fish taste in my food. Cook does a nice job separating my food from that nasty fish yous all eat!

They have the best Gon Lo Mein at a great price, $9.25 for a Styrofoam container stuffed to the gills. The place is usually empty when I pick up my order as the place seems to rely primarily on take out. Another favorite is their crispy gau gee however here I think the price is on the high end, $8.25 for nine pieces. If you have the time my suggestion is make your own. There's nothing better than crisy gau gee fresh out of the deep fryer. Overall the prices are very reasonable and the food is good.

Twice I ordered take out, the food is a little on the salty side. The 1st take out order, I was charge more than their menu price. Last nites order I was overcharged again. I did ask for a take out menu, compared w/an older take out menu. Price did increase but I was still overcharged!

The beef broccoli noodles is sooo good here, that's my fave dish! My bf and I always order that, chicken with black bean sauce, and steamed fish filet. It's always consistently good! I've only done take out here, and every time I do it I notice others waiting for take out too. I rarely see people eating inside, I wonder why?

My secret fave dish is the Singapore Mai Fun. It's curried rice noodles that's a bit on the spicy side. The thing that sets these noodles apart from the Singapore Mai Fun at other restaurants is the small slivers of sweet-sour cabbage mixed in with the noodles. Yum! Their gon lo mein is always a hit at parties.

Food was good but not for the price. I got four entrees take-out for $49 and the portions were small.

I LOVE: that there was no slug in my food, and that the food was very flavorful. I HATE: that the service was ridiculously terrible. if i weren't with my family, i may have made a scene and left (yes, it was THAT bad)! i also hated that i was sooo paranoid about having some kind of slimy creature in my food that i wasn't able to fully enjoy it. :( i may go back, but only for takeout. there's no cure for terrible service.

Phoenix is the take-out Chinese place to visit if you live in Hawaii Kai and don't want to drive to Aina Haina or town. The interior is old-school red 'n greasy Chinese style, and I've also never seen anyone eat in there. Oftentimes they are doing food prep like stuffing dumplings on the dining tables anyway. I rarely venture past the local staples, like House noodles with cake noodles, beef broccoli, lemon chicken, and crispy gaugee. All are what you would expect, nothing special but hits the spot when you are in the mood. Prices are reasonable for dinner, and they have $7 lunch combos as well which I've never tried.

We were waiting on our togo order and my son needed to use the restroom which you have to walk in the kitchen to get to and is was horrible! It was a reck and I caught a glimpse of the open fridge where I saw meat in buckets on he grounds.. and worse it was uncovered. This place is unsanitary!

great place for chinese take out in hawaii kai. the orange chicken here is a total killer! you must get it! seafood crispy noodles also very good. the price at this place seems to be very seasonable, and food is excellent. only reason why i wouldnt give it 5 stars is because the restaurant itself could use some cleaning up and updating. the smell and look turns me off. thats why i take it to go. would match in china town, but doesnt match in hawaii kai. but thats a good thing you can still find some good chinese all the way out there.

This place gets the dubious honor of being the first restaurant that has looked so unappetizing and sketchy that I had to stop the car part way home and take a bite of my takeout food to make sure it was okay just because I was so anxious that it was going to be inedible. Shockingly, the food was actually good! I have been craving wonton soup, so I looked up Chinese restaurants near where I was in Hawaii Kai and this is what came up. I ordered over the phone and when I finally found the restaurant (it is next to Cha Cha Cha, by the way- save the time it took me wandering around the shopping center trying to find it) I was slightly terrified. There was NO ONE eating in the restaurant. There was no staff except for one woman sitting at one of the tables in the back doing some side work. When I told her that I had a takeout order, she seemed to know nothing of it. She went back to the kitchen and then came out with my soup. The place has minimal decor and zero ambience. I walked back to my car thinking, "wow I just made a huge mistake," and kept thinking that as I drove home. Finally I just wanted to stop worrying so I pulled over and tasted the soup. It was quite good- lots of dumplings, also had shrimp and char siu pork, bok choy, and came with a little ramekin of some kind of sauce that added a lot of complexity to the flavor. I would definitely eat it again. If you're going for a sit-down meal, however, avoid this place. It is definitely a takeout option, and don't be put off by the restaurant itself.

Sight unseen..must try on Marisa R's advice. . . 4 stars for take out? no description of the not-so-appetizing interior? . . . benefit of the doubt (after all, it's in Hawaii Kai, and the quest for cake noodle! Got Mochi Duck? K, just found Marisa's review. She is redeemed. Don't you always get a pot of tea? It's an hospitality gesture. The place we went tonight even asked what kind of tea we'd like! THAT's class. [What's the photos? -slugs?] [[What's the "other" Chinese option there? . . .]] YAY, cake noodles! Cake noodles became illegal in the late 50's in San Francisco. [It IS a cultural time warp.] Please stay tuned.

Ordered minute chicken w/ cake noodles yesterday. Was mediocre in taste. Says it was on special that day but paid almost $9.50. My wife was goin to eat the left overs today and she unearthed a fkn SLUG in there! WTF is up with that? I mean it's the size of a garlic clove! That's not something that should be missed! Fk this place! EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

My favorite Chinese restaurant EVER. Their food is so good and when you eat in the restaurant rather than getting take out it's even better (they even give your table their own pot of tea) loves it!! My favorite is lemon chicken, mapo tofu and beef broccoli cake noodle. Also, their food comes out fast and take out only takes about 15 minutes.

Was a little suspicious of this place since no one else was in the restaurant but what I ordered was delicious! The oyster sauce chicken with cake noodles was one of the best I've eaten and it was quite generous. Noticed a lot of take out orders and phone was ringing steadily. No liquor license so went to Safeway to get a bottle of beer, saved some money there. Live in Hawaii Kai a long time but this was the first time and am so glad we found this place. I remember there was another Chinese restaurant and didn't care for that place so avoided going there since I thought it was the same restaurant. Found out they have been there 10 years. Reminds me of the old style Chinese cooking.

I've been eating here since I was a little kid. My favorite chinese place period. The roast duck is awesome as is the orange chicken. I would rather eat here than Panda's. Don't really know about this terrible service that others are talking about. Service has always been good for me.

Your basic decent Chinese (cantonese) restaurant. Love the saltnpepper pork and the house fried rice. Have only ever done take out. Oddly they will always make me walk inside to a table when my packed food is ready and boxed local style in a soda can flat - like they are too cool to hand it to me at the front register area.

I've only done take-out here but the service was quick and the food not bad. We ordered spicy pork eggplant once and it wasn't spicy at all nor were there many pork pieces but I do like eggplant so it was OK. Got the dry beef chow fun another time and the serving was huge, ate it for days. Although I haven't been blown away by the food yet, I'd still like to go back and try more dishes and maybe even eat in at some point!

I have never dined in at this restaurant, however I place phone orders all the time! The food tastes really good, and it is open on many, if not all, major holidays! It is in a shopping center too, so there is a large parking lot.

I like this place a lot. It's my go-to for Chinese food here in Hawaii Kai. It's reasonably priced, good, take-out Chinese. For 4 people, it costs us about $40-50 for several different dishes. The Char-siu pork is wicked good, their orange chicken is even better. Fried rice is very good. Crab and cheese wontons are good, as are the chow mein, long noodles and chicken, and mixed vegetables. I've had a few other things from them, and they've been good too. Quantities are decent sized. Each dish is enough for at least 4 people to get their share. They're very fast in getting your order. They're always ready within 10-15min of placing it. The people working there are nice. I'll continue getting my Chinese food from this place.

ordered two of the combo meals and none of the 6 or so items were that good: daily plate C (beef broccoli noodles, sweet and sour pork, oyster sauce chicken, etff roll) and daily meal D (kung pao chicken, sweet and sour spareribs, kau yuk, fried won ton). I think they just threw a bunch of leftovers together from the night before. maybe ordering a la carte would have been better.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
