Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

Beef broccoli, lemon chicken, ma po tofu, fried rice, hot sour soup, chicken & watercress cake noodle all pretty good! The place is cheap, service is good but the restaurant could use a bit of renovation and personality. I used to come here when it was Silver Dragon. I miss that restaurant. It now seems to be a popular attraction for the kids that hang around Kam. There was only one hard working woman on the floor when we went, on a Wednesday at 4pm. Despite being occasionally swamped and not tipped at all from any of her tables, she was pleasant and helped us pack our food and held the door open when we left. Would definitely be back. The restaurant is big enough to host a party of 100+. Got 2 almond cookies before we left too. This place is located in Kamehameha Shopping Cemter next to Longs.

Everyone is so nice, the prices are the best and the quality of food is amazing as well. I Love going as so does my whole family.

Came here on a sunday afternoon with the church family. Was not busy at all but took a while for them to settle us in. We had big boys eating with us and they wanted to stick 14 people on a round table.. No space! So we had to ask for booths for more room. They have daily specials plate for $4.75, which we all got. They give you $4.75 portions so not too much but not too small either. I tried the lemon chicken and substitute rice with fried rice.. It was delicious. We all agreed that food was good for the price. But service could be a little better. We had to ask for hot tea and one of our orders were wrong.. I would go back because of the price but keep my eyes open for another joint also.

Sad to say..Liu's is a dump. We ordered the Stuffed Bittermelon over rice, and it was terrible! No taste, and the Bittermelon looked like it died last week. We also ordered Oyster Sauce Chicken and luckily we were able to find at least one chicken with meat on it. The rest was bones in an oyster sauce. Unfortunately, our order was a take out, so we didn't want to go back and complain. I should have gotten a clue when we went in and there was only one table with customers. Two thumbs down! Not going there again!

After the movies, my friend suggested coming here for lunch. Located in Kam Shopping Center, I probably past this place numerous times and have never been inside. Inside, I was expecting the interior to be more interesting or similar to other Chinese restaurants. Not this place. It just looks like they lined booths and tables along the wall and that's it. It just looks depressing though they have pretty flowers. The furniture like the seat... I really didn't want to sit on any. Looking at their menu, some of their plates. Cheap! Can't go wrong with that. Haha. Stuck to the page where the plates were under $5 (not including tax). Of course the down side, there's only one selection (though I would assume you could add on). Anyways, decided on the sweet and sour pork with rice. The first bite, felt like I was eating the skin? No meat whatsoever. The next bites after that were much better. I would have selected my friends' dish instead. Worker was nice though and came by to fill our waters when needed. Also, when ordering sodas they give a closed can and a glass of ice.

My friend and i decided to have lunch here..it was our first time..the decor inside is pretty bleh..kinda boring..we waited awhile before we were seated and another 10-15 before our order was taken..They need more workers cause one lady was doing evrything (seating, takin orders, runnin register, cleanin tables).. at least our food was out fast...i got the roast duck on rice(a big portion of rice too)which was Yummy! (Wish i got more duck tho Haha) and my friend got the sweet n sour pork..The pork was kinda hard to chew :/ she gave up eating aftr awhile LoL.We decided to share the minute chicken on cake noodle..Mmm that was ONO!! All from the $4.75 daily special menu... I guess id come back again

My dad had to drop off a prescription refill at Long's Drugs at the Kam Shopping Center and told me we should eat dinner at a Chinese restaurant nearby while we wait for his refill. I should have known right when we walked in that we weren't in for an enjoyable dining experience. The place reminded me of one of those restaurants out of an episode of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. I've been to hole in the walls where the food was good so I thought I'd give my dad a chance. I should've trusted my instincts. There was one waitress running around in a frenzy serving customers, doing take out orders, and running the cash register. The table next to us wasn't cleared throughout our dinner so I got to stare at the previous customers dirty dishes. My dad commented that there was probably only one cook in the kitchen, which, if true, might help to explain the poor quality of food we were about to consume. I looked up the Yelp reviews for recommendations on what to eat and two reviews said their oyster sauce chicken over cake noodles was good, so we ordered that plus crispy chicken and char siu fried rice. As we started eating I actually felt my taste buds and stomach rise in revolt. The oyster sauce chicken over cake noodles was lukewarm and rubbery, the crispy chicken slightly edible, and the fried rice tasted old, dry, and flavorless. I'm surprised that this place is open for business. My dad noticed that many of the customers coming in were old. I told him it must be because their taste buds are dying. Luckily Starbucks is right down the block where I ordered a Green Tea Frappe to wash the taste out of my mouth.

I used to come here long ago and remember the food being good. However, my visit today proved me very wrong. The restaurant is run down and quick frankly looks like a 'has been'. We ordered the chicken with black bean sauce and beef chow fun dry. The chicken was OK, nothing I'd order again and the chow fun was seriously lacking in flavor. I'm glad I got that restaurant straightened out in my memory.

Tired, hungry, broke. Saimin in Kalihi sounds good. One saimin at Liu's. Cheap and terrible. Noodles not chewy, soup not salty. Noodles, old and creamy when chewed. Yuck. Soup, bland, cloudy and dishwater-ish. Sad. Disgusted. Tummy ache. How can you mess up saimin (and call yourselves a Chinese restaurant?) One of the great mysteries of life, I guess. Don't go. It's a no.
(1)Annella N.
Ok so i live in kalihi and although im sad to say this place frickn sucks balls on the realz dont wanna come here ever ..there salt and pepper porkchop was hella salty and the resturant looks filthy and the customer service is slow..im an impatient person and i dont wanna wait for my food for almost an hr f*&$ dat ..i dont recommend this place guys ! If yall wanna eat chinese food dont eat here unreal
(1)Ben T.
I've only tried one dish so far, the Stuffed Eggplant, but it was tasty and the value is tremendous! $4.75 for good sized container with a lot of food in it! My co-workers have also raved about the Salt and Pepper Pork Chops. I also didn't feel flushed as I sometimes do after eating at a restaurant that may use MSG in their ingredients. The owners are nice and friendly.

Hubby and I went to Kamehameha Shopping Center to pick up dinner. We were going to go to Yummy's, but at $10/plate, that sounded too expensive...we're on a budget! We walked by Liu's Chop Suey and noticed a variety of plates available for $4.75. The restaurant looked really run down, but we were just getting takeout, so we decided to give it a try. I got the Mapo Tofu over rice for $4.75 and my husband got the Lunch Plate for a little over $5. We got both of our meals for the same price of one at Yummy's! The staff was friendly and our order came out quickly. I was a little surprised to see a full size takeout plate for my order...I was expecting that it would be the small size for that price. We got the food home and it was still piping hot. My husband was a little disappointed that his mix plate came with chop suey instead of noodles, but I told him that was his fault since it clearly said what it included when he ordered it. My Mapo Tofu was delicious...just the right amount of spice. I wasn't able to finish my entire plate, so I get leftovers for lunch tomorrow! Despite being Chinese, I usually don't care to eat Chinese food, but I am actually looking forward to going back to try some of their other dishes!

You get what you paid for, cheap, not good chinese good, bad service, everything you would think of at a bad restaurant. Came here for Chinese new year during dinner, when we ordered they told us it would take 20 mins to make the food. It came out in 40. While waiting for our food we were seriously thinking of just leaving and going to panda express for some chinese food. Once we got our food the place started getting loud because some families were there with their children and the children were running and screaming everywhere while we were eating. We couldnt even have a decent conversation bc we couldnt hear each other half the time. NEVER COMING TO THIS PLACE AGAIN! Im sticking to the place I love to go, Salt Lake Chinese Restaurant! This place is a joke
(1)Kat M.
The quality and quantity of their food is very inconsistent. There are times when it looks like they gave us leftovers when we ordered takeout. I've noticed that the dishes I order when dining in taste better and have bigger portions as compared to when I order takeout. When I ordered the orange chicken and porkchops for takeout, the chicken was in long, thin strips with orange sauce on the side. It did not taste great, there was mostly skin, and not enough meat. The porkchops were the worst because it was very thin slices of meat and fat deep fried with garlic chips and msg. When I ate inside the restaurant, the orange chicken was in bite-sized pieces that made it crunchy and they were cooked in the orange sauce. The sweet n sour pork was also crunchy and it came with a lot of vegetables. Cheap food and the restaurant looks dirty.

I visited a few months ago and was pretty disappointed by the experience. I'm not one to judge by the ambiance - I was ready to overlook the outdated appearance since it had $4.75 lunch specials. But the dishes that we tried were not good. The salt and pepper pork chop over rice was extremely fatty, not very tasty, and the pork was poorly fried - the batter seemed slightly gummy. The minute chicken cake noodles had an overly thick (gelatin-almost) gravy that lacked flavor. I live for good food deals, but this just isn't one for me. :(
(1)C Y.
True the place needs fixing up but for the price ti is worth going to. Wait staff is attentive and friendly, food comes out fast and hot. $4.75 plate selections is very large, some are good, others okay. I like the stuffed eggplant with rice. You get 4 pretty large stuffec eggplant pieces and well grilled with hot wok. Plavor is pretty good. Otherwise I like the salt and pepper pork chops, not thick piece of pork chop but crisply fired with a garlci/chinese parsley topping that is flavorful. Both plates come with the main dish and rice, very simple but satisfying for quick late pickup for dinner. Price is right, flavor is good, wait staff friendly. How can you go wrong when you can buy 2 plate for less than $10.
(4)Jessica R.
I went there tonight and got very disgusted because while me and my friends were eating, we heard rats walking on their roof right above us numerous times. That is very disgusting to hear while you eat your meal. yuck! that is def my last time visiting that place! no wonder its so cheap, gross!
(1)Albert F.
Just stopped in to get a quick lunch. Havent been here since it used to be SIlver Dragon. The lunch specials were pretty cheap but it was a little on the small side. None the less, it was enough to tide me and my wife and our 2 small kids over until dinner.
(2)Hazel C.
I love this place! $5 for one plate of an entree on rice. So worth it for a small place like this. The main server is sooo sweet, wish I knew her name but shes usually the only server around during the day. Short, small, sweet Chinese lady! One of the best reasons to come here :) Food is what you get for $5. Nothing fancy but enough to fill you up on a tight budget. Love their lemon chicken!!! I've tried almost everything on their $5 daily special menu but their lemon chicken is one of the best. Not a huge fan of their orange chicken though... tastes too sweet. Like candy. 4 stars for great daily specials, 1 more star because this is where boyfriend and I had our first date. (And yes we had $5 plates cause we're cheap HS students) LOL. Sweet!!! :)
(5)Dominic S.
Great food and nice staff. That's the only reason I gave it two stars. We had to have some of the utensils switched out because it was not clean well. Several times we have had to swat away these small nats from the food while we were eating. The bathroom was just dirty. Food and staff is the only reason why I'd come back, but I think the dirty dishes are enough to keep me away.
(2)E M.
Thought I'd give this place another try and had the Shrimp Canton again. It was basically the same experience as last time. The Shrimp Canton plate comes with rice and battered/fried shrimp and no vegetable of any kind - must be the way they like it in Canton! Still a little too much batter on the shrimp and no brown rice option, but, at under $5, they deserve a lot of slack.
(3)Dustin C.
Walked in wit the ohana, was standin near da register lookin at da food n I sware chick blew a snot rocket right in front of us. Went to Kenny's.

Atmosphere: Older place, clean, but simple. Typical Chinese restaurant. Customer service: One lady serving and a man that helps out that I think is the cook. They are very nice and catering. I was eating while these punk high school teen girls were giving them a hard time (it was after school), but they were still nice and very catering. They smiled right thru it. Food: I LOVE salt and pepper shrimp! Salt and pepper pork chop is ok. Cake noodle is awesome. Cold ginger chicken is good. If you get the $5 plates, I recommend if your a noodle person, to get the cake noodle for $.75 extra. I'm giving 4 stars because for the place it is, it is decent in looks. The food is better than some places. I would rather eat here than fake Panda express (yuck!) Or even Chun Wah Kam (gross). Their customer service is on point for me as long as you realize its just one lady working her butt off. Kudos to that lady! If your looking for something fancy, go into town and spend more money there. Hello! You're in Kalihi! Overall its a great place if you are looking at a cheap eat and good food. Nothing beats $5 plates! I really like this place.
(4)Fate L.
The foods are cheap because the portion are small. The foods are full with MSG after eating that I have to drink plenty water and almost every single dish full with corn starch and just taste like corn starch which is yucky.
(1)Lori W.
OK, it's true--this is not your "let's go on a romantic date HERE" kind of place. It is depressing to look too long at the ceiling dustbunnies. Parking requires a thrill-seeking personality. And last but not least, the seats are punishing, in the way of self-flagellation. HOWEVER, their take-out is really cheap and decent. First time there, I admit, I was scared. Cause if the front of the house/where people SEE you looks like that, WTF does the BACK of the house look like? So I went to the bathroom and lingered at the entrance to the kitchen to check 'em out. And it was weirdly clean and kinda old-fashioned, like one of those old, large mainland Chinese (not North American mainland, but Chinese mainland, for those of you wondering) kitchens. After that, I was cool ordering. And glad I did. Went for the Dinner Plate special. At less than $6, it was a crazy good deal. Did take-out. It was hot, fresh, and plentiful for the money. And the meat was treated properly, too. Not sure what's up with the negative reviews, but they did right by us. I would say do take-out if you're going to do anything. But we go back at least once a month to do their dinner plate/lunch plate/orders of gau gee, and they always are good. We've gone at all different times of the day, and have yet to get re-heated food. Maaaaaaaaybe we're just lucky. But so far, so good. They've helped us carry out trays of food to the car, and remember our names. Now that is cool. We like the old-fashioned "yell in the microphone at the kitchen" ordering system at the front. There's something reassuring about ordering Chinese food from people that, um, actually speak the language. Forgive me, Los Angelenos (even though the food might be really good, every time I'm in Lala, I end up ordering Chinese food from someone who is from our neighbor to the South--it's just ODD). Best thing is the dinner plate, for the value, I think. Do take-out. You'll be glad you did.
(3)Karen T.
I wish I checked yelp before going for dinner the other night. Service: Terrible. I don't mean old mean Chinese lady terrible. It's worse. At least the mean old Chinese Lady would have told us to just take a seat instead of leaving 8 of us standing on the side for 3 minutes until I asked the two standing by the register. Halfway through the meal we still hadn't gotten our rice so I asked the waitress to please cancel it. No apology, she just said I'll bring it now. I told her no, we're almost done eating so don't bring it. I forgot to make sure they didn't charge us for it. Food: Lacking. Not bad yet not good. It was all just lacking. We ordered Chow Mein, Chow Fun, Minute Chicken cake noodle, Beef Broccoli, Steamed Fish, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Scallop Soup and Sweet Sour Cabbage with Pork. The only thing I liked was the Walnut Shrimp. We used to like their plate lunch specials but as far as family dinner goes-this place didn't not work for us and we are not going back.
(2)Nickson R.
Its not a perfect place but the food is best for the price range! Shouldnt mind these other reviews because what do you expect you get what you pay for!
(4)Karen M.
My sister and I decided to try them out. We decided to do take out.. Interior is really outdated. Not busy (maybe the food) Anyways, when we got home we couldn't wait to eat.. Major disappointed. Food was ok. Mediocre I guess.. Prices are low.. You get what you paid for.. Will we go back.. No we won't
(2)KaimukiMan H.
went a LONG time ago and it was pretty decent. went with a friend last night and it wasn't. we were too tired/lazy to pick individual diners. He got the dinner plate, i got the lunch plate. both were pretty awful. the people working there were nice enough, and the service was prompt - it should have been the place was almost empty. I couldn't really taste the differnce between the sweet and sour spare ribs and the pork belly (kau yuk). Sad to say I won't be back. I gave it two stars because the people were nice and I didn't actually get sick from the food.
(2)Homer O.
had a roast duck noodle, duck was ok, noodles little under cooked but was ok, portion size small, soup and tea not very hot, water was good.
(2)Kim D.
The food and price is great!
(4)Jay U.
Liu's is the old Silver Dragon Restaurant in Kamehameha Shopping Center. Prices are quite reasonable for the portions, and the food is good...comparable to most chop sueys/Chinese restaurants. Last night, I had one of the specials: oyster sauce chicken over cake noodles, which was excellent and ample sized. My friend had the beef broccoli over cake noodles and remarked that it was delicious. This is just one of my reviews but I've been there a few times already. Each time has been a good experience.
(4)Angela Y.
Chinese Restaurant located in Kam Shopping Center next to game stop. This place is really a good deal. You can get the plate lunch special for only $4.75 plus tax. This is awesome. They give you a pretty good amount also. When I use to work around Kam shopping center we would go here often because its cheap and pretty good. I usually like to order the eggplant on rice. This comes with a little meat stuffed inside the eggplant. Another thing to try would be the ginger chicken and salt and pepper pork chops . The bad thing about this place when I went was that there was only one lady working the whole entire restaurant. She was waiting tables and taking phone orders and take out orders all at the same time. I give her mad props for handling everything by herself. Which there would have been at least couple more people to help out.
(5)Marlo S.
Salt and pepper shrimp is great! But cold ginger chicken doesn't deserve even half a star. Looks like they are going thru a renovation at this time.
(2)Gene T.
If you're looking for a fancy Chinese restaurant with beautiful decor and ambiance and 5-star food this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a fantastic value and decent food then walk on in! I mean really-where can you get a plate lunch for under 5 bucks? Yeah- okay so you don't need two hands to hold the styrofoam box to eat but you do get a reasonable amount of food. Even the roast duck plate (very expensive stuff that roast duck!) had enough duck to satisfy my fairly healthy appetite. The only negative that others have pointed out as well is that because the owner's seem to running things by themselves or with very little help, service can be on the slow side. My solution is to place my take-out order first then do my Long's shopping.
(4)Casey N.
A friend told me that this place has pretty much every local Chinese dish on their menu for a good price. So I decided to order minute chicken cake noodle and it was pretty good for what I paid for ($4.98 with tax). It was not as salty as the other places but it could use a tad more. The setting is pretty old in there but it was clean for the most part! It reminded me of what some restaurants used to look like long time ago. I liked that in someway since every place is always renovating to upgrade to newer things. It's good to see old school style once in awhile! Staff there was really friendly! Also I had mines togo and it came out really fast! It is really big in there too so if you want to bring the family or have a big party (~50 ppl), then this place is able to accommodate that kind of a size! It is located near Longs in Kamehameha Shopping Center and there is ample amounts of parking! Best bang for your buck with generous portions!!
(3)Jane L.
I used to go to this restaurant before it was Liu's. I believe they were called Silver Dragon. Their walnut shrimp is really good. Haven't gone to eat there in over a year. Service really went downhill. It wasn't busy and it took nearly an hour for us to get our food. The portions of the food shrank than what it used to be. The food doesn't taste as good as it used to be.
(1)Row I.
They do have a cheap food plate. Lots of varieties for $4.75 but the quality isn't good. I don't expect great but at least freshly cooked or warm. We ordered minute chicken with cake noodle, orange chicken with rice, and salt & pepper pork chop with rice. To my surprise the food came quite too fast. It made too obvious that it must have been re-heated. The cake noodle and its sauce confirmed my suspicion. cake noodle: too saggy in one part and too hard on other parts. The sauce: it was like a jello. I was too disgusted to eat any of it. The orange chicken: my one day old panda express orange chicken was much better than it. The salt & pepper pork chop was the last one to come. It was freshly fried. It was thin enough to fry it quickly. I had never seen pork chops that thin. I wonder how they cut it with bones and all. Over all, no way I would come back...I believe that quality of food should not be sacrificed by its price. And Consumer should not settle for it.... EH, we got plenty choices here in the island.
(1)Rich L.
I am disappointed with the food in this restaurant. After weeks of advertisting about the signature Pork Chop and Oyster Noodles, I find that too much MSG were used on their dishes even though you asked them not to add additional MSG. Maybe the cook had a bad day?
(2)Cassie Alexis F.
We give props to that one lady serving us! She's so nice! We ordered the orange chicken, roasted duck, and shrimp canton-all with rice. It wasn't so bad! :) $4.75 for such a huge portion..we were struggling to eat it all hehehe :P We thought the roasted duck was the best :D Three roasted duck + rice was our original order. The only thing that didn't make it totalllly perfect was that they had one roasted duck left :( We would come back if anything =)
(4)Stan S.
This place is also known as NEW LIU'S CHOP SUEY -- probably because of the poor reviews and reputation that it had garnered online. It was recently featured in the Dining Out section of the paper -- their garlic tofu and vegetables specifically. I don't know if they somehow doctored up their dish to the Dining Out reviewer or not, but my experience was less than stellar. For a whopping $8.31 (tax included) I received a half filled small size take out box full of food. I asked the person ringing me up if she had mistakenly given me some one's leftovers?! I see that a previous reviewer talked about the value of this place --- if that is the case, you can take your gamble on someplace that is inconsistent in their portions. I will NEVER go back there. I can't believe it got any sort of praise in the dining out. Oh, I didn't address the taste -- that's because it was tasteless. I think I may have gotten the same thing from a pre-packaged frozen meal in the grocery section for a fraction of the cost.
(1)Derek N.
Whenever I have time, and the restaurant is open, I stop by Liu's for their awesome daily specials. They're really reasonably priced considering how much food you get, and I have tried a bunch of different things and I have never been disappointed. The last thing I had was the sweet and sour pork... the sauce is red! Not only is it colorful, but it's tasty! The pork somehow manages to be crispy and chewy at the same time... very good. I also like the mapo tofu (spicy, porky, what else could you ask for?), but that could be just because I love mapo tofu. The staff is very friendly, so bear with them if the food takes a while... though I usually find that it's fast. Maybe that time that it took a while was just a fluke. I think they might be shorthanded for the size of the place... apparently they can accommodate rather large parties if you notify them in advance. The only thing that's wrong with the place is that it looks a little dirty, but I don't go there to examine the linoleum :P Five stars!
(5)Free S.
Went to try their salt & pepper pork chops...we've had better ones at other places. Place was dirty and old.
(2)Grace W.
go to Chinese take-out

I've only been here a couple of time but on those occasions, and all of those times was take out for catering. Liu's is in Kamehameha Shopping Center next to Long's. Parking is kind of a hassle but this is one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area so it's worth the momentary frustration. And it's not because parking is limited, there is a lot of parking...people just don't seem to flow through the parking structure. Anyway, on my most recent visit I ordered a small pan of choi sum chicken cake noodle and 16 pieces of crispy gaugee. The order totaled $55 but was a hit at the BBQ I went to. What I liked about the cake noodle is how generous they were with the choi sum and chicken!
(3)MzShez A.
Salt pepper pork chop ...ehhhh ...its ok. For under 5$. 1 CHOP OVER RICE ..friend with minced garlic and parsley. Run down. Empty. GHETTO... but good price.
(2)A A.
I like this place. When you first walk in - it smells a little bit gross - like a musty basement... and the decor is lacking.... had to wait for a few mins to be seated... and I contemplated walking out - while waiting... but remained patient (and spent that waiting time looking over the menu / figuring out what to order). Only one woman was working in the front area of the restaurant - she was doing it all - seating people, serving food, being the cashier, answering the phone and handling take out orders (this place seemed to be quite busy with take out orders) - so I can understand the wait (it might be nice if she had a little help). On to the food - only $5 for a plate (from the specials menu)! what a deal. That comes with free hot tea too! I got the Kung Pow Chicken - and my friend got the Egg Foo Young. Both dishes were tasty and came with a generous portion of rice. Our bill was only $10! (I love the price). We left a little bit hungry still (we ended up going to starbucks - in the same shopping center (Kamehameha) for 2 coffees and 2 bakery items for dessert / to fill our bellies up all the way). When I come back here again... - for two people - I would probably order two of the $5 plates.... plus something else to share.... for a more filling meal. This place is great.... food came out fast... it was cheap... it was good... and I love the free hot tea. I will be back. I don't really care if the place looks or smells a bit funky - you get used to it - it's not that bad. 4 Stars!

This slice of blah is at the Kamehameha Shopping Center in Kalihi. Despite my reservations on past experiences here, my co-workers continue to come here for cheap lunches and gatherings. Like any typical Chinese restaurant in Hawaii, the service is at best shoddy and marginal, and Liu's did not disappoint. We were not fortunate to come here on an off day, where the restaurant was completely empty and we were hestant to go in and eat. I did wonder why it was really empty, and it hit me when we were ordering our lunch. There's good parking options here, but when its during peak hours, you should consider parking on the roof top of the parking structure to save time. Whatever works I guess. The prices were generally cheap, especially for the laundry list of house specials they advertise on the front of the store. That normally lures people in at $4.75 a plate. The staff was generally friendly, but like any business, they strive to be friendly just so they can cash in. I got the stuffed eggplant with white rice while my other co workers got whatever they ordered. I forgot what they had. The stuffed eggplant was not what I expected, since the last time ate this, it was covered in red sauce. I should have told them not to drench it in the sauce, but they did again. Ugh, this sucks. It was an in and out experience, that I normally don't care for. Kinda like ordering mindless fast food, where the food itself and the experience becomes just something that fades into the background and yo're just too oblivious to the fact that this place really does blow, despite its good intentions. While the food was decent and ok, it could have been improved. The service was slow, but decent, for Chinese restaurants go.

The interior isn't the best looking, but cheap prices ($4.75 plates) and plenty of space. I've come here a couple of times after doing some work at the nearby Starbucks. This place is kind of a hybrid restaurant - plate lunch place. Lots of seating, hot tea, but most people just get plate lunches to go. With the price of a plate lunch going up, $4.75 is a very decent price for a very decent serving size. Moreover, the $4.75 menu is actually really long with a lot of stir fry options. Personally, I liked the the ginger onion beef. One warning: don't get the salt and pepper pork chop that's advertised on the front door. I got it once and the spice combination was great terrific, but the cut of pork was crap - barely any meat, lot of fat, and the whole thing was deep-fried. Why would you deep-fry a pork chop? I give it 3 stars because the food has been okay, there's a large variety and it's cheap - this is exactly what you look for in a plate lunch place. But I would never meet up for dinner with someone here - it's not a great looking place. And I'm still upset about my awful pork chop that one time.

I don't care what these people say about this place. Still one of the best Chinese plate lunch! Try salt & pepper pork chop and shrimp! Even the beef eggplant is good!

I was tired of the "same ole" that my kids enjoy eating so I suggested Liu's as a happy medium. They could have their noodle and I could have something else. Prior to entering, I was surprised to see the long list of inexpensive $4.75 plates (that include rice). We ordered sweet sour spareribs and rice plate, mabo tofu plate and a won ton mein. The girl came back a minute later to say they don't have tofu today. What??? So I changed to the ginger beef and onion with rice plate. About 1 minute later she came with the plate. It was warm and slightly hot in places but definitely not fresh. The beef wasn't tender like normal beef that you get in a dish like this. The won bok cabbage in my kids won ton mein was so spotted and old it was gross. I don't know why they would even think to put it in. The chairs were all broken up in the booth we sat on and the ground was filthy! I only give this one star because I have to and for the low prices. Otherwise there are a ton of better Chinese restaurants out there. Oh, and as I write this I think i'm having a MSG attack.

Tasty Mongolian beef on sizzling platter! Large selection of food priced at $4.75 per dish - what a deal! Generous servings and quick, friendly service. And our waitress broke up our bill by couple, as requested at the start of dinner! That was very accommodating since most restaurants don't do that anymore and leave it up to you to divide the check! Lots of space, instead of being crammed into such tight quarters that you're practically sitting on the neighboring tables lap! Will definitely visit again!

Was in the area the other day, so decided to drop by Lui's Chop Suey for their $4.75 special. I had their Minute Chicken Cake noodle. Usually this is one of my favorite dishes, however Lui's didn't do this dish right. The cake noodle were not crispy outside and the inside of the noodle was cakey and bland like 1/2 cooked noodles. The minute Chicken was OK but the noodles ruined it. I guess you get what you pay for.

Convenient if you're in the area, this place offers decent, but not great Chinese food. They have daily specials: Mon: Chicken w/ lup cheong cake noodle (YES!) $6.50 Tues: Didn't write it down... Wed: Char siu, chicken, or roast duck on rice: $5.99 Thurs: Didn't write it down... Fri: Minute chicken cake noodle $6.50 Sat: Chicken w/ mushroom cake noodle $6.50 Sun: Mushroom veggie tofu on rice $6.25 More of my and my fiance's favorites: Hot/sour soup $6.00 Lemon Chicken $6.50 Cashew Chicken $6.75 Roast Duck $6.75 Honey Walnut Shrimp $14.00 Lup Cheong (it's ONLY slices of lup cheong) $6.00 Mapo Tofu $6.50 Fried Rice $5.75 White Rice $1.50 Saimin $4.50 Duck Noodle $6.75 *Most other cake noodle dishes are around $7.00. A couple of times we've ordered cake noodle, it was a little stale. It's hit or miss, but all in all, this place is OK. I found the saimin and other soup noodle to be excellent when I was feeling sick and/or hungover.
