Our family's favorite place in town, certainly the healthiest too. Local, organic food, sweet staff, good prices. We love the cane juice.

I had the roasted veggie sandwich. It was disappointing. It says it's served warm, the roasted veggies are warm, the bread is not. The veggies were overcooked and squishy. It was very bland. I placed my order over the phone. When I called a person answered "Hello." I didn't know if I had the right number, no pleasantries. If there was options to make the sandwich better, like mayo or mustard, or a choice of bread or a choice of toasted or not, I don't know. The person was abrupt and I felt like I should not have called.

Small sandwich and smoothie shop in nondescript building. Vegetarian, vegan fare. Pretty crunchy/hippie place; girls who work here (only seen female employees) are all super friendly and pleasant. Most importantly the food and smoothies are incredible! Really delicious, and very healthy. I come to this place for lunch every time I'm in Hilo.

Taro burger is the best! Generous serving amount of the taro - consistency is good. Buns bought from Island Naturals. Quiet laid back atmosphere. My daughter's favorite for smoothies too-she always stops in whenever she is back home visiting.

Yummy juices and smoothies. Taro burger was a bit soppy. Banana nut chew snacks and kale chipped were amazing. Nice folk. Not a lot of seating area.

Im in town on vacation hanging out with my brother and family. I yelped while in San Diego, where I'm from, for places that provide healthy alternatives and i came across Sweet Cane Cafe. When i arrived in Hilo I asked Victor and wife if they were any good and they said yes. Soo here i am having one of their acai bowls. That day Sara suggested to get the original acai bowl. I'm glad I did! Soo delicious! One of the best healthy food places I have tried in a long while. Soo tasty and yummy that I will stop by everyday i can during my stay. If your in town and you want healthy, deliciousness, go to Sweet Cane Cafe. You guys are great, thank you!

Got the macnut pesto sandwich and acai bowl. The pesto sandwich had a distinct sour taste, but unique if you like sour - maybe it's the tomatoes. The acai bowl could use more honey, fruit, and granola for the price.

A great place to find good vegatarian. Organic lovers should come here. Eating a cold acai bowl on a hot and humid hits the spot. The only thing missing is a better sitting environment. Other than that, this is a must visit for vegetarian

I shared a Soursop smoothie, Doran & Blueberry smoothie, and a Pesto Pasta, with my daughter and a friend. They were all delicious! And the customer service was incredible.

My fiancé and I finally had this Acai bowl for the first time after hearing about it so much. We've had our fair share of Acai bowls, and this one is pretty good! Not the best we've ever had, but definitely the best we've had on the Big Island. A little pricier side for acai bowls, but when you look at the portion it is actually worth it. I'll be back!

Happy Earth Day 2015!! After many recommendations from like-minded friends to visit Sweet Cane we finally found the time to get down to Hilo to check it out. We had the aloha wrap, avo sandwich, taro burger and ulu burger as well as 3 smoothies. EVERYTHING was delicious. Fresh, nourishing and flavourful. We're so happy we were able to treat ourselves to this wonderful eatery. Jackie and her girls were warm, welcoming and made the entire experience a positive one. Aloha xxx

Love the Acai Bowls here! Best in Hilo for sure. The small is $7 but you can taste the freshness in all the ingredients so it's definitely worth it. AND, I can never ever finish a small alone in one sitting! They give a good portion. I also love their Kona Mango Salad. It's also $7. Everything tastes fresh and their sweet balsamic dressing is winners. This is a great place to go for healthy options! Highly recommend!

Good luck only going to this place once during your vacation. I do not know how we managed to stumble across this place in the first place but I am glad we did. You know you have a great find when the locals are stretched out the door and the Local police are also waiting in Line as if it was a doughnut shop.

3 words...macnut pesto sandwich. That's all that needs to be said! It is amazing! So fresh and so delicious. That pesto is freaking awesome! Everything here is made from scratch and they do their best here to be as healthy as possible. They also have a wide selection of drinks. I like the wellness shot but be careful, it's got a kick to it! Beware if you are sensitive to cayenne pepper. I have also had the sugarcane probiotic drink and it is good! Very sweet. I add a wellness shot to it which makes it very interesting. Not so sweet anymore. I would love to try something else from here but I'm afraid I'm hooked on this sandwich so I don't see that happening anytime in the near future. If you are in Hilo, do yourself a favor and try this place!

This place is close to UH Hilo campus and is a good place to grab a quick lunch. I've now tried the acai bowl and the farm fare salad with ulu and taro fritters. Both were very good. This was the first acai bowl I've ever had so I will have to try a few more to determine how good this one is compared to others. But I thought it was really tasty. I do wish there had been more bits to chew. The fruit part had a really interesting consistency and was like ice cream in a way. Over the acai were banana pieces and all was sprinkled with some oats (muesli?) and coconut shavings. I got a large and it was a LOT to eat. I could not finish it although I was very hungry when I started. On another occasion I stopped in for lunch and got the farm fare salad with ulu fritters and a friend got the same with taro fritters. I preferred the taro as the ulu was dry and insipid, but with the salad dressing everything was very tasty. We have a few more days here in Hilo and little time for lunch. There is a good chance we will be back tomorrow to try other things.

Sweet Cane Cafe was a happy discovery & one we repeated almost every day during our vacation We indulged in smoothies w/ mac nut milk acai, banana, berries....we came back specifically to get this smoothie, it was *that* worthy Also had their Tropics w/ mango & bananas & another smoothie that had cane juice, blueberries & soursop - never heard of it? Neither had we so had to give it a try.....interesting fruit that was like a combo of pineapple, banana, & a hint of cantaloupe.......our fav was definitely the Acai smoothie Also tried their homemade Taro burger w/ carrots sprouts cheese tomato - this was an awesome sandwich Another visit saw us giving their Cassava Fritters a try & they were interesting & made for a nice treat Overall, we have nothing but love for Sweet Cane Cafe

Staff here is so friendly and polite! If I lived in Hilo I would be visiting this place on the daily. Everything on menu is fresh, healthy, and most importantly they use fresh, local ingredients. I got the macadamia nut pest sandwich, which was just the right portion. It came with sprouts, tomato, pesto, and cheese melted on their local bread. I loved that they put so much pesto that it was oozing out through the bread. You can never go wrong with too much pesto! I will definitely be back to eat here again the next time I am in Hilo. This place is especially great for tourists to get a taste of the local and fresh ingredients of Hawaii. The only downside of this place is parking. They share a parking lot with other local businesses and there are only a few stalls designated for each store.

Acai bowls, pataya bowls... large is big enough to swim in, would recommend not getting large. also have dozens of smoothie combos. veggie sandwiches.

This place is amazing!!!! Great little take out right next to tykes. Everything served is gmo free and full of deliciousness. My new fave. The only advice I would give, is to put more granola. There was only enough to cover the top. Other than that, great tasting and a lot of good sandwiches too

  • B A.

The food here is excellent, however I cannot help but notice that there are no male employees. I think the owner might be practicing gender discrimination. As a species, I think we have moved past gender-bias. We have so many great leaders from the last century like Harvey Milk, Gertrude Stien, and many queer others. Do we really need gender bias in the 21st century? I asked a worker if any men worked there, and she said "No, but there are some guys working on the farm." Men do the farm work, and women work in the kitchen. All this really creeped me out and I don't think I can support this business.

Sweet service. Great fresh tasting products. Their prices should go even higher to smash the tourists' pocket books. This little place is s gem and is great for vegans and natural eating. The breadfruit and other great things durian. Awesome.

One of the best acai bowls I've had! They keep it simple and stick to the basics with the toppings: Granola and fruit! The smoothie part is perfectly sweet and so creamy! Not icy at all. And the large size is huge! Could easily split it with a friend. Perfect way to start your day or post workout treat

Sweet Cane Cafe is a great spot for vegetarians and vegans alike, or just anybody who is wanting fresh, organic, and local (not to mention GOOD) food. I've been here twice so far and have tried the taro burger, mac nut pesto sandwich, and original acai bowl. I would definitely recommend all three! The small acai bowl was enough to keep me full for breakfast and into lunch. The bowl contains acai, fresh macnut milk, bananas, berries, and is topped with granola, coconut flakes, and sliced bananas. It didn't look too big but it sure is a lot to eat! The taro burger is a must-try; the burger is homemade and is topped with cheddar, carrots, tomato, and sprouts on a toasted bun (I think that also spells Y-U-M). The pesto sandwich was also really good, although I (personally) probably wouldn't get it again. It's got macnut pesto, parmesan, tomato, and sprouts served warm between two slices of bread. There was just a tad too much pesto in the sandwich and I felt like it overpowered the other flavors, but it was still yummy to eat. The food here proves that vegetarian and vegan can be healthy for you without skimping out on the taste and flavor. On my next adventure here I hope to try one of their smoothies. FYI the smoothie menu is just as long as the food menu. There are a lot of options to choose from, so good luck finding your niche!

2 coffees 9$ How can this place be considered cheap on yelp? Seriously.. I paid less for one cappuccino in Venice, Italy.. that's ridiculous.

  • Carrie C.

The food here is just as it says, delicious and healthy. It doesn't feel heavy, but is filling. The smoothies are also really fantastic. The Pitaya smoothie is the best but I also get the avacado sandwich is my favorite sandwich. Also the staff is wonderful.

  • Marissa D.

Sandwiches. Good. Smoothies. Good. This place is especially nice if you're away from home and tired of eating out. The food made me feel like I made it at home--which is just what I was looking for! I will definitely go back!

  • Kelly W.

Exactly what we were looking for for breakfast (would be good at any time in the day)! I got the mac nut pesto sandwich and the small Starfruit Lilikoi smoothie-$14. This isn't a super cheap place BUT it is delicious! Gmo free, gluten free available and veggie friendly! The Starfruit lilikoi is delicious - very tart and tastes like exactly what it is (surprise). The sandwich? DELICIOUS!! Highly recommend Sweet Cane Cafe.

  • Dania-Maria K.

Finally made it over here and I was not disappointed. I got the Acai bowl in size small and gobbled it up! It is very refreshing and goopy, in a delicious way. Prices are reasonable as well. Outside seating is available as well as two tables inside. There are also products and other food items for sale other than the yummy things you can order at the counter. I will be back to try out more!

Excellent food. I Love this place. It is a real treat to eat at the Sweet Cane Cafe. You leave satisfied and happy you came. I highly recommend this place as a choice when you come to Hilo. The staff is helpful and friendly too. Thanks, Sweet Cane Cafe for making the effort to deliver great meals to us customers. Thumbs up ! ! !

  • Saxon S.

I have to say... i love the concept of Sweet Cane Cafe! Theres not too many places in Hilo where you can get something healthy and fresh to eat. They grow a majority of the veggies used in the smoothies and are 100% organic. I tried the acai bowl, green smoothie, and kale chips. I do wish that the taste of their food was as good as their concept. The acai bowl seemed plain and boring to me...it had bananas, granola, coconut, and acai. The flavor was ok but nothing special. I was over it after a few bites. Flavor wise, the green smoothie tasted good however, it was too sweet for me. It was also my first time eating kale chips. I was disappointed to find that the chips were not really crispy and some were a little soggy. All in all...its a great little spot in Hilo and probably the best organic cafe there. I think its just that i've been to so many cafes on Oahu... I had really high expectations for Hilo. I'll definately go back to try more items from their menu though.

Aćai bowl is amazing! Great prices too. Food comes out quick and from the hands of some amazing women. Love their idea of keeping everything local organic produce.

Such a cute little smoothie shop/deli. I only ordered the acai smoothie and the seasoned macadamia nuts, but they were both delicious! And the ladies working there were really sweet.

    (5)
  • Morgan K.

I've tried a few different things here...the Go Green smoothie is delicious! I've also tried the Raw Nori Wrap (not much flavor unfortunately), and the Macadamia Nut Sandwich (if you love pesto this is a must have!) Overall not a bad place for fresh healthy food. It's a bit on the pricey side, that's the only thing that keeps me from coming back more frequently.

    (4)
  • K Z.

I love the food. The macadamia nut pesto sandwich minus the parmesan because I'm vegan is absolutely great. I love it! It's quick, prices are good, and the staff is cool. I very much recommend this place if you are a vegetarian or vegan, just let the staff know for your vegan substitutions.

Great smoothies and sandwiches. A quaint little shop near tykes laundromat. The only issue about this location is parking. The area tends to be busy especially around lunch.

  • Victoria G.

Really nice place to get all organic fresh smoothies and breakfast fruit bowls.definitely a go. located in the mall and not very visible from a side, its a place to go. dont miss it!

    (5)
  • anne f.

Great smoothies in Hilo. The Vanilla milkshake is delicious and I like the coffee inspired creations. Limited seating and it takes a while to get your drink but it's worth it to not get one of those terrible "island oasis" syrup smooties. This is the real deal. Will be back to try their food.

    (4)
  • Marge S.

Healthy and delicious. Fresh, wholesome local ingredients. The acai bowls are huge. The smaller side is more than enough for most peeps!!! Gluten free friendly. Nice staff.

  • Michael B.

Only 4 stars for now because I haven't eaten any of the food, though I can't imagine that I would be disappointed. Prices are a little more expensive, but well worth it-all of the ingredients used are local and organic, and totally non-gmo. The menu will change slightly to whatever is freshest or most in-season at the time, so expect your favorite smoothie item to be tweaked from time to time. Their packaging is fully compostible, made from plants and recycled materials. I love the mission of the owners. Service is always very friendly, and it's convenient as a mostly to-go place. There are a couple tables indoors and several outside, though it's in a busy parking lot next to laundromat so not really the best place to eat if you're looking for ambiance of any sort. In addition to the menu, they carry different kinds of fruit, cookies and treats to purchase, as well as local jellies and assorted items. I've been here 3 times in 5 days, and had the acai bowl twice. It's pretty amazing, very filling, and just about the healthiest thing you can feed your body any time of the day.

    (4)
  • Coconut V.

Aćai bowls are the best! I love the options to add things to it. The size of the bowl is definitely worth the $$ I love this spot!

    (5)
  • Patricia H.

Great juices, smoothies and acai bowls. The best part it's their creative vegetarian sandwiches. Taro and U'lu sandwich patties. It was a nice way for Hawaiian traditional ingredients to be incorporated into a meal for vegetarians. Also Gluten free friendly with gluten free bread.

    (5)
  • Nicole P.

The food is colorful and full of flavor. It's a taste explosion and the ladies here sure know some great concoctions. Favorite drink is Hot Kiss. A blend of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, tumeric and other spices !!

    (5)
  • Rose P.

Ono acai bowls, and pesto zucchini pasta. The rose water mountain apple smoothie was really good too. Good service, and fresh, local, organic ingredients. Outside seating and plenty of parking.

  • Hans S.

UNSANITARY. Watched my food get touched with bare hands numerous times after preparer touched dirty rags, cash (iPad) refrigerator, counter, including putting food in her mouth WITHOUT washing her hands. I walked out. Sorry but if u r working with RAW foods you should be more careful. Too "natural" for me.

  • Lokelani B.

They have a wide variety of smoothies and the ones I have tried are all really tasty and fresh. As for the food, the taro burger is my favorite. It's delicious and very filling. Great little hole in the wall.

    (5)
  • Shelly B.

I'd give the açai bowl and smoothie 5 stars, I eat acai bowls whenever I get a chance from many cafes. It was a nice dark purple, very creamy and smooth and fresh-flavorful tasting. They make their own granola which was delicious and healthy as well. Unfortunately, the only get 3 stars because their customer service was AW-FUL. Slow, cold and rude.

    (3)
  • Baby D.

Yumm! I loved this little smoothie shop that also serves healthy food. Fresh coconut water is also served here, along with healthy treats to take home. I can't wait to come back here next time in on the Big Island.

  • Beth R.

Cute place. Tasty eats. I tried the house made taro with 'ulu patty rolled in raw nori with avocado, diced tomato, carrots and sprouts. It was filling and satisfying. However, the real superstar was the Hawaiian Supaman smoothie. I got the large size, which was HUGE, delicious and oh so filling. It was a combo of taro, banana and mac nut butter. Oh my. Yah. So good. I could live off that smoothing. Well, not really. I mean I really loved it, but I do enjoy solid food. Yum!

Feeling the need to get a little energy without loading up on heavy food we were nearby & found this little gem by pure luck. We walked in and looked over the menu, observed others choices & came to a decision. I ordered the "blueberry buzz" w/Kona coffee smoothie & a shot of hemp protein added. My sweetie got herself a mango, banana, coconut smoothie. I would have to say without a doubt those 2 were the best smoothies I've had & tasted in many a year! Well made with outstanding ingredients and if I can swing it I will definitely head back there and go for another! Small businesses with this much going for them have my support any day over the more well funded outfits and this gal has it happening! So do yourself a favor and try her wonderful products out !!!

  • boostman Z.

Impressive and delightful little place with healthy grub. Prompt and friendly service. I had the Taro burger. Very fresh and tasty although would have been nice to have some extra condiments or hot sauce for added flavor. My daughter had a nori wrap with delicious store-made sauerkraut. Only down side of nori wrap was soft and almost soggy nori. Maybe it's supposed to be this way but it distracts a bit from freshness vibe. Go Green juice/smoothie was really good. Well done people of the Sweet Cane Cafe!!

  • Stephen V.

Amazing! Some of Hawaii's best smoothies ( some unusual options too) and a taro burger to die for. Try it with the tumeric hot sauce and a pinch of salt (on the jalapeño cheddar bun, of course)...super filling. The food's locally grown and organic, and the people are truly wonderful. It's my favorite place to eat on island (Kamana in Kona is a close second)

I love the taro/ulu burger and the Aloha Wrap. I love that this place keeps it as local and organic as possible! Just finishing the Juice cleanse which was amazing as well! :-) health conscious earth loving people can't go wrong!

Their acai bowls are ridiculously delicious. Yes, it was amazing.

    (5)
  • Nicole S.

The only things I have tried here are the acai bowls, zucchini pesto pasta I think it's called, and the pesto sandwich. The acai bowl and the sandwich tastes so good! However to me personally, the pasta wasn't that great. Whenever I go here I usually get the acai bowl. It's so frosty and I love how the granola is mixed into the acai instead of just piled on top. I do wish there were more toppings though such as strawberries and what not. The small size is huge!!! For me anyway. It's hard for me to finish it by myself. If you're looking for a great acai bowl and a delicious pesto sandwich, Sweet Cane Cafe is the place to go! :)

Two weeks after our vacation on Big Island, and I'm still craving the smoothies I had here! In fact, I took a picture of their menu which includes the ingredients of each smoothie with the hopes of replicating them back home, but sadly, it's just not the same. If (or rather, when) we return, I'll definitely be making another stop. Oh and it's worth mentioning that their taro burger "broke da mouth!"

Taro burger is the best! Generous serving amount of the taro - consistency is good. Buns bought from Island Naturals. Quiet laid back atmosphere. My daughter's favorite for smoothies too-she always stops in whenever she is back home visiting.

This place is amazing!!!! Great little take out right next to tykes. Everything served is gmo free and full of deliciousness. My new fave. The only advice I would give, is to put more granola. There was only enough to cover the top. Other than that, great tasting and a lot of good sandwiches too

The food here is just as it says, delicious and healthy. It doesn't feel heavy, but is filling. The smoothies are also really fantastic. The Pitaya smoothie is the best but I also get the avacado sandwich is my favorite sandwich. Also the staff is wonderful.

Sandwiches. Good. Smoothies. Good. This place is especially nice if you're away from home and tired of eating out. The food made me feel like I made it at home--which is just what I was looking for! I will definitely go back!

Such a cute little smoothie shop/deli. I only ordered the acai smoothie and the seasoned macadamia nuts, but they were both delicious! And the ladies working there were really sweet.

Great smoothies in Hilo. The Vanilla milkshake is delicious and I like the coffee inspired creations. Limited seating and it takes a while to get your drink but it's worth it to not get one of those terrible "island oasis" syrup smooties. This is the real deal. Will be back to try their food.

The food is colorful and full of flavor. It's a taste explosion and the ladies here sure know some great concoctions. Favorite drink is Hot Kiss. A blend of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, tumeric and other spices !!

Ono acai bowls, and pesto zucchini pasta. The rose water mountain apple smoothie was really good too. Good service, and fresh, local, organic ingredients. Outside seating and plenty of parking.

    (3)
  • Tertiary D.

Cute place.

Aloha xxx

Sandwiches. Good. Smoothies. Good. This place is especially nice if you're away from home and tired of eating out. The food made me feel like I made it at home--which is just what I was looking for! I will definitely go back!

Thumbs up ! ! !

Really nice place to get all organic fresh smoothies and breakfast fruit bowls.definitely a go. located in the mall and not very visible from a side, its a place to go. dont miss it!

Great smoothies in Hilo. The Vanilla milkshake is delicious and I like the coffee inspired creations. Limited seating and it takes a while to get your drink but it's worth it to not get one of those terrible "island oasis" syrup smooties. This is the real deal. Will be back to try their food.

Healthy and delicious. Fresh, wholesome local ingredients. The acai bowls are huge. The smaller side is more than enough for most peeps!!! Gluten free friendly. Nice staff.

Aćai bowls are the best! I love the options to add things to it. The size of the bowl is definitely worth the $$ I love this spot!

They have a wide variety of smoothies and the ones I have tried are all really tasty and fresh. As for the food, the taro burger is my favorite. It's delicious and very filling. Great little hole in the wall.
